[l10n-dev] Proposal for issue http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=96791

2008-12-09 Thread Rafaella Braconi

Dear All,

with issue http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=96791 a
number of strings which mainly include German *product names* in the
source have been introduced as to be translated. Honestly, I don't think
that it make much sense to consider this file as to be translated, but
this is my opinion and would like your help to look into this issue and
find a solution.

Option 1)
close this issue and set the file as not to translate

Option 2)
translate and maintain the translation of the product names in all
languages going forward.

Please start voting on one of the above options or ... provide
additional feedback that may help coming to a solution.

Thanks,
Rafaella

I vote for option 3.
but if it can't, for option 2-1.

The reasons,
1. There's a few people who knows German.
Although they're the product names, if most of people can't read, or
can't understand what it means, it will be useless.

2. Product names are not unique. Of course mostly are unique. but not all.
I mean, in some cases, they might have different names for each languages.

Option 2-1 : at first translate to English, if they have english names
or they're sold in some countries which use English.
And each translators make a decision whether they'll translate or not.
Or translate then if the products have the names in translator's
languge.

However option 2-1 will be very hard. because each translator have to
search what they are, and whether they have an another names. So,
please remove them.

+1 and leave the decision to the translation teams. The products may be sold in
several countries, so there might exist locale product names.

translating it in all languages, where these products are available.

Otherwise it could be disabled if possible

Hi Rafaella and All

I vote for option 3.

The recipe to generate an extension for labels is rather simple, and is
given below

http://extensions.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=dev&msgNo=1459

Works perfectly, by the way.

Should we open a specific issue?

very good question!

With m37 most of Help Content changes have been integrated (CWS
hcshared19). Ive already asked Aijin to update Pootle content based on
the m37 (update will be announced separately).
L10n key deadlines have been added to the release map at:

A more detailed translation schedule is on progress.

Is there a place where one can read up about what is being done on the
issues mentioned currently ? A sort of state-of-the-nation summary ...

And, I had a separate question - what is the scope/extent of Quality
Assurance when it comes to l10n builds ?

I apologize if the questions are naive, but I would like to read about
what the boundaries of a discussion are.

I'm afraid no one can understand what I said because of my humble english.
But you did. thanks :)

We have some principles.
1. Don't translate the Product name.
2. Don't leave anything which is untranslatable.

To avoid against violating two principles,
1. Use German as Product name.
2. If there exists locale product name, translate it.
(But it's too hard to check)

Of course the best is, remove them all. and allow to add as extension.
:)

It's no much sense to keep so many labels. Some of them are almost same. I
suggest OOo designers reconsider these labels and just keep some
