If Oracle joined with the document foundation, it will be a great decision.

I like all of them, but as you know me, I can't comment without any
 criticism...

While both the larger and smaller address labels are really well done and
not to be discussed from trademark POV (they don't contain the logo, while
the gull orb is not covered by the trademark), the 2x4 stickers will
probably need to become approved by the trademark owner (Oracle).

As the trademark policy has not been finished yet, I can't tell you if
providing the template to everybody interested in using the logo will fit
 the rules they will establish.

Perhaps Stefan Taxhet or Louis Suarez-Potts can provide more information or
 grant usage - I CC'd them...

From design point of view the logo seems to be stretched: it's borders are
not as sharp as they should be. If such labels will be allowed to be
created, I'd propose to use larger scaled bitmaps or vector graphics as
 basis for the logo.

 Best regards

 Bernhard

Please try again after adding the gulls to the logo at the right

available while other things get sorted out.

Oracle reps will speak up if there is anything to say about the

For OOconf, we are translating into English the nine and first edition
of our magazine. My colleagues Claudio Filho and Olivier Hallot should
  take them printed on OOconf.
About the special edition we are producing and then ask for help
revising the English text, if someone can do it. Our forecast is that
the magazine is launched on 30/september.

Images don't usually get streamed, can you elaborate on what the user
should be able to do? If it is online photo managment, there are better
examples, ones that are not tied to proprietary technologies.

About video upload requirements, those need to be set.

  max file size (50 MB?)
  license: CC of some kind
  screen size max (?) / min (640x480)
frames per second max (30) / min (15)
  container format: ogg, quicktime, matroska;
discourage mpeg; prohibit WMV and Flash
  codec: theora, maybe mpeg4
aspect ratio 3:2 or 4:3 or either?

For video an effort to work with Ogg Theora can be made. That is also
the focus of Mozilla Firefox for video. It'd be nice to avoid H.264,
 H.263, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4

I am aware that photos can't be streamedI meant videos comprising pics
after each other...made using simple tools like picassa etc. ...however we
can use other tools for this as well... Making a video like this is easier
and will need less time to make as compared to someone shooting the video
and putting too many affects etc.

We can have screenshots, posters, community meeting pics, release party
  pics, ooconf pics ...

The quantity could be quite overwhelming, but could be used as a pool
from which to select images for marketing.

I agree...this precisely was my idea and it will enable our community
members to contribute from wherever they are ..

Please feel free to ask anymore questions

 Hi Lars,

And going C/S helps, how? There is one company that I have tried that has
OpenOffice.org running on a cloud. You can access it with a browser or
NoMachine. According to their web site only Windows can use the NX version,
but I know better as I had it running on my Ubuntu box as well. To me HTTPS
puts security on the server and not the end user. If security is left to
the user all it would take is one not doing what is required and the whole
 system becomes a security problem.

[marketing] Online Open Office

2010-05-18 Thread Varun Mittal
Hi Guys,

I want to start a campaign for garnering support to convince oracle guys to
support the online Open Office or at least seamless integration with the
existing online office suites.

We all know the importance of having an online version especially when all
others are offering competing solutions.

Some ways to do it which I thought are as follows , feel free to add and
suggest-

1) A signed e mail by community members..( We can host the application on
wiki or some other collaboration tool)
2) A Twitter wave wherein all the community members start at same time and
bring as many people as possible together to make it a trend on twitter.
3) Individual e mails by community members ( not too feasible)
...
...

Please give your suggestions and guide

2010-05-18 Thread Varun Mittal
HI Paul,

The problem is the formatting for documents is totally destroyed with Google
Docs.

I share with you a real incident wherein I was editing my resume in Google
docs and when I tried to download it the formatting was all over and I had
to spend so much time to fix it back.

This prompted me to think why not Online Open Office .O4U ( Online Open
Office.org 4 you) .

 Hi Varun,

 I completely agree.

Till then, there is always Zoho and Google Docs.

 I use the extension OpenOffice.org2GoogleDocs (gdocs_2.2.0.oxt 2.2.0): This
extension helps me upload to Google Docs or Zoho in just 2 clicks!

 Best regards,
 Paul

Hi Roman,

If I am not mistaken Oracle has some big bets on cloud computing. So I think
it should be fitting into the scheme of things. They can still offer like
some amount of storage free and charge for anything over that.

 Why convince oracle guys?

IMHO, if you do that, they would have control of your project, and
 that's not a good thing.
A corporation will never control a community, unless there is no
 alternative.
If you start the project from the community, maybe they want to support
him then. But in this case, is already defined who runs it. If you do
so, they undoubtedly will direct and to the side that suits the
 corporation, not the community.

Sorry for my bad english. Here, the same in spanish:

EMHO, si tu hicieras eso, ellos tendrían el control de tu proyecto, y
 eso no es algo bueno.
Una corporación jamás dará el control a una comunidad, salvo que no
 quede más remedio.
Si comienzas el proyecto desde la comunidad, tal vez ellos quieran
apoyarlo luego. Pero en ese caso, ya estará definido quien lo dirige. Si
lo haces de esta manera, sin dudas lo dirigirán ellos y hacia el lado
que le convenga a la corporación, no a la comunidad.

Of what understanding I have for an online office is servers and their

  OpenOffice is dead
As I mentioned over on the Google blog last night, I’m headed to
the Office 2010 launch tomorrow. While Office in particular and
Microsoft in general are hardly my beats, productivity and groupware
software in the face of Google’s Apps and education’s need to
extract every last bit of value from our investments certainly are. This
is why I’ve thrown myself so completely behind Google Apps. For educational
institutions, it’s free and it works very well,
both as a document collaboration solution and as an email/calendaring
 suite.
It’s also why I’ve been a big proponent of OpenOffice [2]. Again,
it’s free and provides a perfectly workable alternative to Office. It’s
mature, stable, and works cross platform. And it’s
free. What’s not to like, right?
But here’s the thing: If someone needs a desktop office suite (and
I mean they don’t just think they need one, but actually need to do
things that can’t be done with Google Apps), then they aren’t
going to be satisfied with OpenOffice. I don’t blame them,
actually. Given my choice of Office 2007/2010 or OpenOffice, I’d
pick Office. It’s polished, it’s easy, and it’s powerful. To
be honest, I’m not even satisfied with Office 2008 on the Mac; I
run XP in a virtual machine to get to Office 2010 when I need it.
For users who don’t need Office, it’s a rare occasion that
Google Docs doesn’t suffice. And yet for those who need Office,
it’s rare that they’re happy with OpenOffice. Where does that
leave OO.org? Our district is fairly rural and there are still
plenty of homes with only dial-up or without Internet access
entirely. For these families, OpenOffice is a great choice since
they rarely have access to academic pricing on Office and can’t get
online to access Apps. As reasonable access to the Internet becomes
ubiquitous, though, Google Docs or Office Web Apps (even via
Facebook) will meet the majority of student and teacher productivity
 needs.
Am I wrong? Am I so dazzled by the pretty lights in Office that
I’ve lost sight of the value of OpenOffice? I don’t think I am. The
majority of the time, the students and staff I support tend to
make use of Google Docs. Same for me. On my Linux machines, it’s
rare that I’ll fire up OpenOffice, despite it being a solid choice
for desktop productivity. That’s what the Internet is for, right?
Because in addition to Google Apps, there is Zoho and Office Web
Apps, all of which work quite well.
I just don’t see much of a place in mainstream education for
OpenOffice anymore. Pre-loaded on laptops and netbooks in developing
countries where Internet access is unreliable or non-existent? You
bet. But why use OpenOffice when most of your users can work quite
well with Apps and licensing costs for Office are low for the small
number of users who need a full-blown desktop suite?

Hi Florian,
Maybe we can also ensure that all the news release are shared on twitter

responsibility and by retweeting it all of us can then spread the word.

(For eg the Feb 11 news release is still not present in the twitter feed)

I am ready to take up this responsibility if it is so required. :)
