If you do that, and add this to persistence.xml, I think we're good to
merge.

Don't panic, we can play around with that after merging your PR in. I think
once those headers are added, this should be good to merge.

Re: How can I help?

2018-12-05 Thread Daniel Dias Dos Santos
Hi Jon,

I can try to add yes, but I had problem before submitting the PR, I had
tried to use the above statement and the TomEE maven plugin following the
example :

https://github.com/Daniel-Dos/tomee/blob/master/examples/deltaspike-fullstack/pom.xml

but I had problem at the time of its execution with mvn clean tomee: run
started to seem an exceptions.
so I tried running it out with the plume + eclipse-link version.

Re: How can I help?

2018-12-05 Thread Jonathan Gallimore
Also can you try adding:

to persistence.xml, so the schema is created automatically when running on
OpenJPA?

It would also be good to get the TomEE Maven plugin working with it, but
that shouldn't block this PR being merged.

Love the example, especially the image on the home page!

Re: How can I help?

2018-12-05 Thread Weverthon Medeiros
Hi guys,

I was looking at the issues opened on Jira, I didn't find anything related
to Fault Tolerance - Fallback. So, I've added a new task for an example on
Fault Tolerance @Fallback (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/TOMEE-2323
).

I would like to implement this example. Can anyone assign the ticket to
me?

Thanks!

It should, yes. All artifacts, including the examples are under the same

It's good that you like MVC spec, it's a very simple and very cool

spec,

because it reuses our knowledge in Jax-RS.

I would love to make an example for Tomee 8, would have problem in

using

RestEasy for this?

so far the Apache CXF is not 100% in Ozark / Krazo, we are having some
problems in the test phase of the TCK that is failing.

But I can do an example using Apache CXF, I do not know how far the MVC

API

will work with it.

I think it's a good idea to work the way with it. : )

I really like the MVC spec, and use it for a system with TomEE here.

I'd

love us to have an example that shows TomEE 8 with an application

This page hints at some issues running on TomEE:

Re: Open source, how can I help ?

2018-12-04 Thread Richard Monson-Haefel
Hi German,

Thanks for reaching out and asking "How can I help?" I'm excited to see
you join our community. Below is the information I've been sharing with
others who have asked to help. Hopefully, this will get you started and on
the mailing list where you can receive some more guidance on contributing.

The first thing you'll need to do is to subscribe to the dev mailing list.
Here are the instructions I have given others:

To get started send an email from the email address you want to use to the
TomEE developers mailing list (dev-subscr...@tomee.apache.org). After you
send the subscribe request, the list manager will send you a confirmation
e-mail in reply. You must reply to this e-mail to complete the process. If
you have not received the confirmation request, check that it has not been
marked as spam. A confirmation will put you on the
dev@tomee.apache.org mailing
list where you can talk to the rest of the community!

Once your subscription is confirmed (sometimes it takes a few hours), send
a message to dev@tomee.apache.org with the Subject line "How can I help?"
and write a little bit about yourself like where you live and what you
might be interested in working on. You will probably be given some tasks
outside your interest area just to get you started, but once you get the
hang of it you can move to a specific area if you want.

I'm really looking forward to seeing you on the list and learning more
about you. Welcome to the adventure!

Richard
p.s. I've CCed the dev@tomee.apache.org mailing list so they know you are
coming.

Welcome, Mohammed! I'm glad you were able to join! If you sift through
the archive of late you may spot a couple of tasks that we've encouraged
other people new to the project to work on. Also, I'm sure you can get some
advice from others on the project directly through this mailing list.

I have reviewed PR https://github.com/apache/tomee/pull/231 related to code
clean up.
It was a big long to review. Next time if you could make the PRs smaller so
they are easier to review and merge, that'd me great.

There is a conflict to solve and then it's ready to go.

Re: How can I help?

2018-12-03 Thread Jonathan Gallimore
How about one example for each? A working example is cool, but it would be
great to use a CXF-based example that we can use to drive out the issues so
we can help fix them. I'm of course happy to help you out.

Cheers!

Re: How can I help?

2018-12-03 Thread Daniel Dias Dos Santos
Hi Jon,

It's good that you like MVC spec, it's a very simple and very cool spec,
because it reuses our knowledge in Jax-RS.

I would love to make an example for Tomee 8, would have problem in using
RestEasy for this?

so far the Apache CXF is not 100% in Ozark / Krazo, we are having some
problems in the test phase of the TCK that is failing.

But I can do an example using Apache CXF, I do not know how far the MVC API
will work with it.

I think it's a good idea to work the way with it. : )

Hi Daniel

Thanks so much for posting!

I really like the MVC spec, and use it for a system with TomEE here. I'd
love us to have an example that shows TomEE 8 with an application using the
latest Krazo version. Is that something you'd be interested in creating?
This page hints at some issues running on TomEE:
https://www.mvc-spec.org/ozark/docs/install-javaee.html - perhaps we could
work through these along the way?

Re: How can I help?

2018-12-02 Thread Richard Monson-Haefel
Hi Jose,

I thought for sure you responded to this email but I can't find my response
so I may have missed it. If I did, I hope you will excuse the tardiness of
my reply. I'm excited to read your email and I can't wait to see you on
the forums and making your first commits to TomEE!

I'm currently working on a beginners guide but it's in the works, so
instead of pointing you to that I'm going to ask you to join the
dev@tomee.apache.org mailing list and introduce yourself with the subject
line "How can I help?". We have at least a half dozen folks already
helping others get started. You should feel free to ask them as many
questions as you want and on the mailing list to get started!

Richard
p.s. I've CCed the dev@tomee.apache.org mailing list so they know you are
coming.

JIRA help and list communication (Re: Hello World! - How can I help?)

2018-11-30 Thread David Blevins
Let's add him to the committers group so he can close tickets. It doesn't
grant commit on the project, it just means you can do more in our project with
JIRA.

Martin, read this so you can see what we're trying to do with the current
permissions:

  -
https://lists.apache.org/thread.html/c43bff671730108ccb347990d9db950bcd4126f5b189c2504f5abff3@1218013764@%3Cdev.tomee.apache.org%3E

Fully understand your perspective on lists vs jira. Most would describe that
as lists vs pr comments vs jira comments. Either way, Apache is a mailing-list
driven ecosystem so ultimately talking here is necessary for anyone to be given
commit in the future. The motivation of the permission scheme is to help
people embrace it.

For those who want to learn more about this aspect of The Apache Way, see this:

The famous quote is "If it didn’t happen on the mailing list, it didn’t happen."

Thanks for posting, and welcome! I think it would be great to have your

JIRA titles and descriptions in many cases probably only make sense to the

1. Create JIRA Ticket
2. Code :)
3. Create PR like TOMEE- + NAME

2018-11-30 Thread Wiesner, Martin
Hi César and Hayri,

I very much support César's suggestion to open a JIRA issue per PR (or even
upfront so others can comment or point you to existing resources early).
Thereby, other devs might better check which branches or what parts of TomEE
are affected, or what the intention of an improvement is.

Best,

Hello World! - How can I help?

2018-11-30 Thread Wiesner, Martin
Hi folks,

my name is Martin. @dblevins and I were discussing how individuals could
contribute to #TomEE. He convinced me to join the mailing list.
In the past, I contributed some user feedback, opened bug reports and proposed
improvements in exchange with @rmannibucau and @struberg.

Some further background information:
I work in the field of Medical Informatics, doing research and teaching for
several years now at Heilbronn University (Germany), CS faculty. As Richard
(@zowalla) already mentioned in his welcome message, we are using TomEE in
software labs in our bachelor / master programmes and in regular projects at
our faculty, for instance, managing hardware loans to students and staff
members.

How I could contribute (atm):
@dblevins and I discussed that I can support in keeping TomEE's JIRA instance
clean and comprehensible, e.g. by (a) identifying and closing duplicates, (b)
clarifying unclear descriptions or affected branches, (c) communicating with
reporters on missing details and so on and so forth. Hopefully, other dev guys
could benefit. Why? They might better identify relevant topics or enhance
existing bug reports... In addition, I could screen discussions on the mailing
list for "hidden gems" and open (or edit) JIRA issues to give bugs and/or tasks
a unique number within the issue tracker.

Why is this so important?
From my perspective, as a researcher and as software architect, clarity often
improves communication in, and efficiency of a project. I've experienced this
in many projects I’ve been involved so far.

What do I suggest?
Maybe you can grant me elevated permissions within the project’s issue tracker.
If approved, I could then manage the aforementioned aspects within TomEE’s JIRA
instance. I’m familiar with this tooling as we have JIRA running in our
faculty. This instance is actually hosted by Richard and me.

If I can help otherwise: feel free to ask. In case I say ’no’: please don’t
feel rejected. I’ll try to give an explanation in such a case.

Best,
mawiesne

Checking this in TomEE master would be a great place to contribute some time.
If you create a PR for the test case, that would be excellent. If it is only
in 7.1.x than it will "die" there as all future branches will be based in some
way on master. We should make sure your work lives.

btw, Hayri, I recommend you to create a Jira for your Pr's. [1]
Base on my experience, it's better to have this tracking so you can then
see the status of your PR (in a review, assigned, etc).

2018-11-30 Thread Richard Zowalla
Hi David,

thanks for your response.

The PR (https://github.com/apache/tomee/pull/162) was merged to 7.1.x branch
only (from what I can see in the PR in GitHub) and includes a related test-case
:)

As it is related to the changes discussed in
http://tomee-openejb.979440.n4.nabble.com/TomEE-8-Jsonb-Provider-td4684419.html
- it may also be worth to check the described behavior in version 8.x.x - this
could be a way to go.

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard!

It's amazing you've contributed to TomEE. That JIRA thread is incredibly long.
I'm pretty impressed with how much time you put in. I would love to find some
way to get you listed here: https://github.com/apache/tomee/graphs/contributors

For that to happen, we just need a PR for TomEE master. Do you know if
TOMEE-2233 was merged to master? If it was, are there any tests that could be
added to improve coverage that would provide a good commit?

Hello World! - How can I help?

2018-11-30 Thread Richard Zowalla

Hello everyone,

my name is Richard. I had a nice mention on Twitter by @dblevins
(https://twitter.com/dblevins/status/1068594206577352704), so I decided
to join the mailing list.
My first contribution to TomEE was the fix for
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/TOMEE-2233.

A little bit of background information: I am a research associate & PhD
student in the field of Medical Computer Science (or Medical
Informatics), primarly working in the field of Web data-mining /
Distributed Web-Crawling.
I love to code and as we are using TomEE for our software labs in our
bachelor / master programme at our faculty (and for some other
non-university related projects), I would love to contribute to this
great project :)

So now I am here and happy to help :)

Cheers,
Richard

Re: How can I help?

2018-11-29 Thread César Hernández Mendoza
Hi Richard,

I opened a new email thread "Improvement for Community section from the
website - TOMEE-2300 [WIP]" in which you will find an initial PR that I
started today in order to provide the place we all can contribute to
improving the Contribute section from the website.

If you haven't setup locally your tomee-site-generator project, Ivan's
video shows how you can fork, build and run it locally:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6IM0LDevVU

The step missing would be to apply my PR changes into your branch and you
can work from there.
I usually use Hub (https://github.com/github/hub) to simplify this task, so
from tomee-site-generator local master branch I just need to do:

git checkout https://github.com/apache/tomee-site-generator/pull/6

Re: How can I help?

2018-11-29 Thread César Hernández Mendoza
Hi Richard,

For the Beginners Guide you mentioned on this thread, do we have an open PR
already and/or an email thread?
I was trying to see how I can contribute to them because, for instance,
some communication tools like https://openejb.markmail.org/search/?q=
have been helping me a lot to search, filter and catch up with the threads
I had opened and others I'm interested with.

I also think something like this can be really useful for someone who wants
to collaborate for the first time:
https://github.com/forge/core/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.asciidoc#git-workflow
I know we have a page that describes the maven flags and other build
details, but a more Tutorial approach can be also useful.

Re: How can I help?

2018-11-29 Thread Richard Monson-Haefel
Hi Alex,

Good to hear from you. I'm glad you are interested. Below is the response
I've been sharing with people interested, but I wanted to say that I'm
looking forward to seeing you on the dev list and checking out your first
commit to TomEE!

Richard
p.s. I've CCed the dev@tomee.apache.org mailing list so they know you are
coming.

Hello Michael,

I suggest that you always ask questions to the list and not to me
privately. I may be busy like I was this weekend, and barely had time to
open my computer. A lot of people on the list are willing to help you with
these questions :)

You can do a master update periodically if you want, just to avoid
conflicts. I would say at least every time you start a new branch.

This will avoid conflicts.

step by step we can go pointing to other directions.

Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for your reply.

MicroProfile sounds like an exciting challenge.
Also, I'm very familiar with Java EE 8 (I'm working with this now).

I'm entirely new to TomEE, and I'm going to follow your suggestion.

How can I help?

2018-11-22 Thread Jose Henrique Ventura
Hi Guys,

Today I stepped by Richard Monson-Haefel's tweet where he describes his journey
with Open Source projects and
I really liked the initiative of encouraging developers to join an Open Source
project. I know that there are many Open Source project around there but I
think there is a lack of information of how people can get started with.

I'm really interested in getting started with an Open Source project especially
now with Jakarta EE and MicroProfile.

I'm interested and I would like to know "How can I help?". =)

2018-11-22 Thread Jonathan Gallimore
Hi Weverthon,

Welcome to the community! We have a few things going on with TomEE at the
moment including:

* Java EE 8 support
* Java 11 support
* Microprofile examples

In addition, improvements to the website, documentation and any patches are
welcome. I myself am looking at MicroProfile JWT 1.1 support which is
almost there, and also some experimentation with security managers on the
side (likely quite a challenge). If either of those sound interesting to
you, I'm happy to give you some pointers. Similarly, if you like the sound
of something else, that is cool too, and I'm sure one of us can give you
something to get started on.

Is there a particular area of interest that you'd like to dive into? If
you're completely new to TomEE, I'd suggest starting by grabbing the server
and trying your existing applications on it. The general idea is "if it
runs on Tomcat, it should run on TomEE". There are some cases where that
doesn't quite hold true, but it should be possible for the most part.
Similarly if you have apps on WildFly, Glassfish or another server, give
them a go and see how you get on. Its great to see new people come to the
project looking to help out, thank you!

Jon
