Grab a tape recorder and chat to some people who know how well you did
the job. You should be able to get some choice quotes that way. It's
always harder to write something than say it, and this might be a way
around. I would start with an unrelated question or two just to get
them started, and then ask them so, overall, what did you think of
my work?. This works even better for telephone conversations - just
remember to ask their permission to quote them as a testimonial,
though this can be done after the conversation.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] help with categorization/client relation

2008-08-13 Thread alan james salmoni
This might not be what you wanted, but you could always test this. It
won't take many resources - just see if people get confused if the
categories' contents are not mutually exclusive, or if they get lost
trying to navigate around. In some cases, my guess would be that it's
okay to have some items at different levels, but on others it would
not. This could be a tricky one that needs each item considered
individually if you want to get it spot on.

It might even be worthwhile running a card sort on the sub-categories
to get the best idea of which super-categories they fit into (I'm
assuming you haven't already - apologies if you have). It's a quick
and easy (ie, quick and fast) test to run. Card sort results should be
enough evidence to show how other people (ie, customers) might
categorise items and be close enough to get the job done quickly.

Apologies if this isn't what you wanted.

It seems that users having the caps lock key on is an issue for case
sensitive passwords, and that you might need to cater for it in the
field prompt and error message.

Does anyone know how complex the algorithm is for the 'strength of
password' prompt when people choose a password?

Testimonials are a little hard to take seriously in my opinion. They
do, however, grab my attention when something unique is said from
someone who matters.

The testimonial on http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk is a great
example.

You might try giving them no guidelines at all. Maybe doing so will
be unexpected and will result in more candid and relevant results.

This is a good book. I have this book - but it does not include design
patterns or best practices in a formula you can just copy out of book and
create wireframes or ixd func spec from - you will actually have to come up
with your own solution.

I'm looking at a similar issue. I found this on passwords, but haven't
 looked in depth yet.

 http://www.humanfactors.com/downloads/jun04.asp

One of my questions right now is whether or not to enforce the password
complexity rule. It is enough to inform the user that their password is
weak, and let them go about their business if they so desire? Or do we
force them to have a strong password that they may forget later?
Security at the expense of usability, or usability at the expense of
security?

The article you liked proposes some good tips for users for creating
passwords, but it doesn't help inform design much. I guess we could
share tips about how to make a secure-but-easily-memorable password in a
little help section, but I expect most people are so focused during a
registration process that they wouldn't bother reading it. The
passphrase technique is fabulous, but it's hard to explain that in a
sentence, plus most people have a set of predefined passwords that they
use on sites anyway.

Personally I hate it when I'm forced to include at minimum 8 characters,
one uppercase character, one lowercase character, a symbol, etc. My
worry is that if we enforce this (as the project charter currently
specifies!) that people will choose crazy passwords, forget them, and
have to make numerous password retrieval requests, thereby degrading
their experience on the site.

Or perhaps it's not as big a deal as I'm anticipating? I'd love input.

This is personal opinion but I feel that design needs to be as
flexible as possible unless there's a really good reason to do
otherwise. For example, if your site is related to banking. Even
Amazon, which stores credit cards, doesn't have a rigurous set of
password rules (but they do have other measures, such as requiring you
to enter the CC# again if you try to add a shipping address).

In that sense, I think it's better to inform than enforce.

Let the users know the strength of their password but don't force them
to any particular level.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA iPhone users straw poll

2008-08-13 Thread Mark Ahlenius

Howdy,

1). browsing the internet to various sites
Browsing my my clam shell phone was a royal pain!

2). checking stock with GUI app (vs. calling Tellme)
Didn't have a very fast and easy way to track stocks on my other
phones - unless I called up Tellme

3). Using GPS-related apps - like iWant
Didn't have a GPS phone with great apps which integrated location
with data - iWant is very cool.

A few extras just for good measure:
4). Listen to music - just not a good experience on my other phones

5). Checking email - its so easy to setup for Yahoo or gmail.
Did not have this capability before

6). this should probably be in the top 3! - Downloading and installing
(free) apps. This was always a pain on regular cell phones. the iTunes
store makes it quite simple and very very easy to install.

best

Looking fwd to seeing your tabulated results.

anything in between.

This will be an open mic style event with up to five minutes per person, and
the goal is to introduce ourselves; it's not a critical review of our work.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] best practices for login security?

2008-08-13 Thread Jim Drew
From: Meredith Noble [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Personally I hate it when I'm forced to include at minimum 8 characters,
one uppercase character, one lowercase character, a symbol, etc.

You forgot that neither the first or last character can be a non-letter (to
avoid the use of password!1, which is easier to break), and that the password
has to be changed quarterly, and to something sharing no two-character
sequences with the previous one (so no pass!1word and pass!2word usage).

(I've had two of those three, and they threatened the other. They should have
just assigned us new random ones; it would have been less trouble.)

Re: [IxDA Discuss] how to present UX to the whole agency

2008-08-13 Thread Mark Ahlenius

OK,

not to sound like a broken record, but to me, Apple gets it. (now
fire your flaming arrows to /dev/null ;-} ).

Ask them (or better yet, have them try this).

Ever purchased a brand new Apple Mac Book (or Macbook pro?, etc). What
was your experience like, from opening the packaging, looking over the
very simple setup getting started page, to powering it up and logging in
for the first time? Just try it!

(seriously, if you want to really sell this idea, consider having them
go through these steps).

From the innovative packaging, to the instructions, to the setup menu
which actually takes a picture of you for your login prompt, to stepping
through the initial setup steps - its very easy and enjoyable. Is it
perfect? By no means, but it beats the pants off many other user
experiences. Imitation is one of the strongest forms of flattery.

Same for an iPod or iPhone. Clever and cool packaging. Apple doesn't
stop at just making a great experience with one application, they do the
whole ecosystem. Again its /*not */perfect, but its good. The system
is simple, understandable and for many - quite enjoyable.

(ok, off my Apple soap box and down to the real world)

Anyone have any experience using it?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] any ideas for icon research?

2008-08-13 Thread Jordan, Courtney
I agree with Steve. Use the paper statement metaphor that already exists
rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. I would guess that Italians,
Canadians, and everyone else in the developed nations have at one point
received paper statements in the mail, thus I would think that the paper
icon would be universal. But if you have access to your audiences, test
some different icons out and see how each culture reacts to each icon,
what they expect when clicking it, when seeing it on something...

Maybe approach the icon creation from how people view their paper
statements. Just create a statement icon. Why differentiate paper versus

online? Do people really make a distinction between a paper statement
and
an online statement? Isn't an online statement just a digital version of

the paper statement?

Re: [IxDA Discuss] help with categorization/client relation

2008-08-13 Thread Sterling Koch
I've built several real estate sites myself, have had some of the same
requests, and haven't found it to be a problem. My experience is that most
people don't see this as a unique category/subcategory system, but rather as a
general grouping. That is, there will be Industrial Land and there will be
Industrial Investment properties - most people won't find that confusing. This
is the way the MLS handles it as well (I work for an MLS company, so I have
some experience here).

I hope that helps to ease your troubled mind a bit.

Subject: [IxDA Discuss] help with categorization/client relation

Hi,

I'm working on a commercial real estate site, and I'm having a bit of
trouble coming to agreement with my client on categorization. He wants
a two-level category scheme, which is fine. The problem is, he want
some terms at both levels of the categories, thus:

Commercial
Automotive
Mixed
Restaurant
Retail
Warehouse
Industrial
Flex
Manufacturing
Warehouse
Investment
Commercial
Industrial
Land
Office
Land
Commercial
Development
Industrial
Multi Family
Office
Office
Corporate
Professional
Warehouse

Basically, the problem is with the Land and Investment super-
categories, which have the other TLC's as their sub-cats (for the most
part). My instinct is that that will be confusing. (I don't mind
having Warehouse under both Commercial and Industrial, though.)

Am I being too rigid? Can anyone point me to any research on this
question? (I would imagine that there's been tons.)

TIA

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Q: Soliciting client testimonials

2008-08-13 Thread Sterling Koch
I agree. For those of us who spend enough time on the web to become generally
jaded, testimonials are usually assumed to be fake. That being said, the ones
that matter are short (usually one sentence focused on one aspect of your
service) and have a real name and/or company attach that can be found elsewhere
(i.e. a link to their website).

Testimonials are a little hard to take seriously in my opinion. They
do, however, grab my attention when something unique is said from
someone who matters.

The testimonial on http://www.stuffandnonsense.co.uk is a great
example.

You might try giving them no guidelines at all. Maybe doing so will
be unexpected and will result in more candid and relevant results.

Micah,
Seems like the client is trying to enforce a strictly hierarchical tree
relationship to categories that
the client feels is not necessarily hierarchical.
This is a typical issue for menu search and/or category research.
For example, a study done by Tom Landauer investigating search for items in
the yellow pages
indicated that people pick the wrong organizing category half of the time on
their first try.
Is it Doctor or Physician? Is it Drug store or Pharmacy?
So if one goes to Doctor, there is a pointer to Physician etc...
It's not clean or elegant and you need to account for the fact that people
will choose the wrong category initially.
Yours,
John

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA iPhone users straw poll

2008-08-13 Thread Bonnie John

Things I do now:
1. Making three-way calls, because it is so obvious how to do it.
Add-Call button, dial the next number however you usually dial,
Merge-Calls button (in the same place the Add-Call button was). It just
works!
2. Taking pictures with the phone instead of the digital camera in my
backpack, because the iPhone pictures are good enough for most purposes
and they get onto my Mac more often than from the camera (i.e., when I
charge).
3. Adding new people to my contact list, because it is faster to do it
than with any other phone I have had before. The on-screen keyboard is
just so much easier than multi-tap.

Things I can't do anymore and miss:
1. Sending photos from my phone to my kid's phones, because it sends
them in regular email and nobody in my family likes using the email on
the iPhone (all 4 of us have iPhones and, to my knowledge, nobody uses
the email). I sure wish I could send photos phone-to-phone not mediated
through regular email (anybody know how I can do that)?
2. Having a separate ring tone for each person in my family -- sure I
can have different ring tones, but the only one of the default ring
tones I can actually hear is the annoying alarm signal (sounds like an
alarm on a submarine or a fire alarm). I tried distinctive ringtones for
my family, but I missed too many calls from them because I didn't hear
the ring and they all got mad at me. I wish all the sounds could be
turned up louder for us 50+ crowd with failing hearing. (Yes, I did go
to the Apple Store and ask them to help me with this - they said I have
it as loud as it goes.)

Everybody else seems to use the web -- I HATE that because it is so slow
(yes, I have an original iPhone). I only do it when I have no other way
to get to the web.
Many people use email -- I can't stand that because the top 50 are
always spam and I can't search or sort -- again, I would much prefer to
whip out my laptop than struggle with this tiny screen with no searching
or sorting (no, I don't use spam filters and yes, I have a lot of good
reasons not to, but it does make the iPhone unusable for email).

Listen to music, yeah, I do some of that, but it didn't make the top three.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] IxDA iPhone users straw poll

2008-08-13 Thread Rob Enslin
Hi Greg,

My three (in no particular order):

1. Micro-blogging (Twitter) - the Twitterrific app allows me to
spontaneously tweet (feels more natural) at any time. Plus, I check tweets
sent by folk I follow all the time. I'm interested in the tweets for news
and interests - seems a natural way to stay tuned.

2. Email (Gmail) - I check and send emails/correspondance in much the same
way I use Twitter, but I use it in a more comprehensive way - greater
detail.

3. Internet (Safari) - random and time-wasting fun and during meetings for
confirmations. News, location-based interactions (Brightkite), wiki
management, and staying in touch with authoritive news feeds.

Cheers,

Rob

Hmm. Having read a number of the answers, I find that I do many of the
things listed with my Nokia N82, which doesn't have a touch screen.

So what point is being made? That the iphone interface encourages
people to use their phones for a wider variety of activitites than if
they all had N82s? Would you get the same answer from owners of N82s
in general? I also use my N82 for satnav.

Additional point - I don't want a phone or mp3 player with a
touchscreen. I want tactile feedback buttons that I can use by touch.

2008-08-13 Thread St. Pierre, Erin
Are you ready to challenge yourself and take your design to the next
level? Some designers think that software UI is boring and dry, but
those are just the ones who don't understand the true meaning of pushing
the limits. Creating an aesthetically pleasing, yet functional and
smart UI is the hardest, but most rewarding challenge. Are you ready to
take it on?

Requirements:
- Interactive Design skills - SilverLight and WPF preferred
- Experience with interactive prototyping in Flash
- Prior experience doing web and/or application UI work.
- Ability to create wire frames and design specs in addition to visual
design.
- Ability to quickly create comps and prototypes.
- Proficiency in standard design tools (Photoshop, Flash, HTML/CSS,
etc.)

Our client is a large software/internet/gaming company located in
Redmond. This is an on-site, full-time, contract opportunity. Unlike
freelance jobs, we include full benefits (matching 401k, bonus plan,
100% paid medical, etc.)

Please send your resume and portfolio to [EMAIL PROTECTED] We look
forward to hearing from you!

Ok,

Post iPhone conversation... Any recent reading material on trends in

I am looking for blogs, whitepapers, conferences, places for where
people are talking about both the IxD and the scenarios of use that are

Hi folks,

Putting on my professional security hat for a moment, I don't think
there are a general set of security best practices. There are specific
sets of best practices depending on what your general security
requirements are, but it's difficult to state a set of general best
practices that aren't so vague as to be useless. (ex: Be functional,
don't annoy the user, etc.)

Ask yourself what the value is of what you're protecting? What is the
cost of a breach and who absorbs the cost? How often do you need to
authenticate and under what circumstances? Who are the potential
attackers and what resources do they have?

If you don't have one in-house or if the client doesn't have one, I
suggest you find a good security consultant and get a set of security
requirements and start from there.

One other note:

- Emailing lost passwords to users

Never, ever, ever store passwords in the clear, anywhere. If a user
forgets their password, generate a temporary one and ask them to create
a new password.

Plenty of people re-use passwords on different sites, all it takes is
for one of those sites to store passwords in the clear to compromise the
accounts of multiple sites. On a smaller scale, all it takes is hacking
an individual's email account and doing lots of lost password requests
to get one or two of their common passwords.

[IxDA Discuss] calling people for IxD education initiatives

2008-08-13 Thread IxDA Education
Dear IxDA community,

Do you want to make a difference with the next generation of Interaction
Designers? IxDA is about to start a number of interesting education-related
initiatives, including a mentoring program and round-up of IxD schools... We
need *your* help to define and execute these and future projects.

We're looking for educators, students and practicing designers to build a
team of volunteers focused on how IxDA can bring value to the experience of
IxD education around the world. If you're interested in how IxD is taught
and learned, or how practice and education can interface, we want to hear
from you!

To get involved, please contact:

 education [at] ixda.org

Please include some information about yourself, and especially what issues
you're passionate about in the education learning space. We'll include you
in our new working group, and look for your participation in
education-related initiatives.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,
Jeremy Yuille

Checking Gmail more often, and actually organizing it better.

Checking my bus times from anywhere. This is huge. A local guy in
Portland (Matt King) made a quick Trimet Transit Tracker that scraped
local arrival times into an elegant little iPhone site. Accurate.
Beautiful.

Taking more random little pictures.

Twitter, natch.

Pandora.

Reading news on the bus.

Reading Mark Twain on the bus.

And oddly, using the timer and alarm.
