Using MP3tag, add ArtistSort to the columns (right click on one of the existing columns and "Customize columns") and sort by Artist and -then- by ArtistSort. Then you the ones you haven't assigned an ArtistSort appear at the top, but they are still sorted by Artist. Sean. P.S. At least with MP3tag you can sort all your albums in one list by Artist and then select each Artist in turn to set the new tag. Great advantage if you have multiple albums by same artist. It also, of course, will include any on compilations. With regard to your MP3 files I doubt that many, if any, portable/car players will read 'Artistsort' so you may want to do a test sample first. As already suggested in another message you could just do the FLAC's and then batch convert to new MP3's. Happy tagging! [slim] For people who use the COMPOSER tag...
I've posted a bugzilla request for an enhancement to SlimServer, and if you use the COMPOSER tag, you may well want to vote for it. Bug 3229: Add COMPOSER to "Title format" choices http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3229 I've asked that COMPOSER data be added to the information displayed for the track that is playing. (This display is controlled in the "Title format" section of Home/Server Settings/Formatting.) If you select music from a disc of Beethoven piano sonatas, you can see what you're listening to. But if you select a recital with music by various composers, you'd better know the composers in advance or be willing to scroll down throught the track data to find out; ditto for random or shuffle modes. Please vote! This would be an excellent enhancement for classical music fans. -- axiomatic axiomatic's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3775 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22653 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi, When I start the browser to play music it tends to be an interrupted signal, a hiccuping, almost like a record skip. I close the browser and restart the SlimServer and usually it plays fine. Almost always it takes me two tries to get music playing smoothly. [slim] Re: Booting Slimserver in OS X ... from the command line
Ok, it all came down to deleting these two files: ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache which automatically get re-created when you click on "Start" in the preference pane button for slimserver. For some reason, the files as they were were messing things up. Thanks folks (and good eye kanoot, that was a sneaky one to catch). So as far as I can tell, when gremlins got your mac and you don't want to do the windoze approach of wiping the OS and reinstalling (ugh), do these: i) run disk utility and verify system drive and permissions ii) wipe out the files as outlined in this post iii) wipe out slimserver and reinstall it (I didn't have to do that this time) I really, really think this has to go in some obvious place in the documentation (maybe even the little booklet that gets shipped with the squeezebox) so that people that are not comfortable with surfing around the directories in a mac can still use the device "just like a cd player". I assume that this is more an OS issue than an application issue (although I don't know for sure), but it's still a robustness issue with the device and its server if something upstream breaks as mysteriously--and then gets fixed as easily--as this one did. One plus I'll mention before I go--the staff at slimdevices reads these posts and pitches in when they know something. They will have less of that to do if they put this tip somewhere. :) Cheers, trebejo -- trebejo trebejo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=730 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22208 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I am correctly pointed to it in slimserver and the playlists do not show up in browse playlists in either slimserver or on my shiny new squeezebox. Tech support has walked me through the usual stuff. The directory is correctly pointed to it in the software. (As a matter of fact when I make a new playlist DIRECTLY FROM SLIMSERVER it puts that playlist in the directory that is specified. I can see it in the dir, but it does not show up on slimserver or squeezebox.) [slim] Re: Slimserver fails to start/stay on
It happened to me recently when updating from 6.1.1 on Windows XP. The installer failed to install Slim as a service although I had asked it to start automatically. All you need to do is follow the instructions in the Wiki, http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?WindowsInstallationGuide Note: While you are given the option to run Slimserver service automatically when you install on Wiindows, you may want to install and run the SlimServer Windows service by hand. Follow these instructions: Open a "cmd" window and type "cd C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server". Type "slim.exe -install auto" to install the SlimServer software so it will automatically start as a Windows Service the next time you reboot. [slim] Recalling previous search
I'm a SliMP3 user from the early days, and have yet to figure this one outI'd like be to able to recall the previous search *after* listening to the current songs. It goes like this... When I initially search for music, I get the opportunity to choose from all the artists/albums/songs found at that time. Fine. I pick one. It starts playing. If I change my mind, I can LEFT ARROW and choose another from the found list. It plays. However, once the selection has been played and the player stops, the original FOUND LIST is gone. Pressing the LEFT ARROW produces only "NOW PLAYING". I would need to re-enter my search from the beginning. Note: I know how to use PLAY ALL, to avoid needing to repeat the search, but that forces hearing all songs, which is not desired. So...exactly when does the player/server decide that I no longer need the previous search results, and how do I convince it to retain them? [slim] Re: SB power usage and automatic power switch
The SB3 does not draw enough power to reliably trigger one of those things. There's an extensive chart out there somewhere which shows the current draw when in standby, playing, display off, etc. but IIRC you can assume 1.2A draw at 5V. That's only 6W. The power supply itself is only rated at 2A = 10W at 5V. There were a few solutions proposed and I believe someone came up with a circuit that definitely involves soldering. There's a non-soldering solution involving an IR-triggered power strip with the SB3 IR blaster. This power strip is available in the UK. [slim] Why SlimServer stop and how to avoid it
Hi, I have seen posts before regarding server stopped for unknown reasons, and saw discussion on whether run SlimServer as a service automatically or from command line. I myself encounter this server stopped problem several times recently. It happend on the official 6.2.1, last night's 6.2.2, and many versions of 6.2.5b. It becomes very annoying now since when the server stopped, it did not automatically restart even though I have set the automaticlly restart service on slimserver from the service pane in the "right click my computer -> manage" window. When this happened, I checked the event log and I saw error but said the cause for the error was not identified. It's OK to have the error, but this restart service automatically is not effective since the server remained stopped forever. Can someone help me identify what is causing this problem? And how to avoid it? I have used wireless for some time using softsqueeze with mixed results. Intermittant dropouts and on one occassion complete loss of connection for a day even though I tried changing channels. Wireless appears to be unable to pass through some wall surfaces and relies upon scatter ot find it's way around your house and it is also liable to interference. mainly from Microwaves although I did notice that I lost connection every time a neighbour used her remote control to open her car. Yes, I know that in the UK these car remotes are no where near the same frequency but the effect was very reliable. I have now moved to the second generation (85Mbs) HomePlug Ethernet over Mains and have had a stabile connection for the past three weeks. The product worked straight from the box and will even work across mains extensions providing they have to mains filtering within them. I use mainly flac and can do file browsing and file transfer across the link simultaneously without problems. I do have an issue with the fact that some of the advanced features are poorly documented, but the software works perfectly for me. I just rip using EAC and encode using FLAC in one pass directly onto a Windows Small Business Server which has around 8 clients accessing it during the course of the day and it runs 4 Squeezeboxes perfectly. Audio quality may not be a priority for you, but it certainly is for me. Perhaps if you changed the tone of your post, explained your problem in detail someone might dive in and help you. What ripping software do you use? How are you encoding your files - and what format? How is your music organised? I've been waiting for years for networked mp3 players to come of age and Slimserver together with the Squeezebox 3 does everything I want to and because of the nature of the Open Source software it will continue to evolve as users require and add more features. -- timmorris timmorris's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4147 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22627 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
