If you are like me, and find the full job daunting, you can do it bits
at a time. Using MP3tag, add ArtistSort to the columns (right click on
one of the existing columns and "Customize columns") and sort by Artist
and -then- by ArtistSort. Then you the ones you haven't assigned an
ArtistSort appear at the top, but they are still sorted by Artist.

Sean.

P.S. The way to add the tag in mp3tag is using Alt-T.

No point you buying a drive duplicator because if you don't get
SlimServer working on the QNAP, your sales are going to dry up anyway.
I'm on the point of returning mine, not fit for purpose. Hello? The
general idea is that you do the development and testing before you con
people into buying the product, not after.

Yes, adding the extra tag is a pain - I had about 900 to do! At least
with MP3tag you can sort all your albums in one list by Artist and then
select each Artist in turn to set the new tag. Great advantage if you
have multiple albums by same artist. It also, of course, will include
any on compilations.

With regard to your MP3 files I doubt that many, if any, portable/car
players will read 'Artistsort' so you may want to do a test sample
first. As already suggested in another message you could just do the
FLAC's and then batch convert to new MP3's.

Happy tagging!

David

[slim] For people who use the COMPOSER tag...

2006-04-01 Thread axiomatic

I've posted a bugzilla request for an enhancement to SlimServer, and if
you use the COMPOSER tag, you may well want to vote for it.

Bug 3229: Add COMPOSER to "Title format" choices
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=3229

I've asked that COMPOSER data be added to the information displayed for
the track that is playing. (This display is controlled in the "Title
format" section of Home/Server Settings/Formatting.)

If you select music from a disc of Beethoven piano sonatas, you can see
what you're listening to. But if you select a recital with music by
various composers, you'd better know the composers in advance or be
willing to scroll down throught the track data to find out; ditto for
random or shuffle modes.

Please vote! This would be an excellent enhancement for classical music
fans.

[slim] Hiccuping of signal

2006-04-01 Thread holderlin

Hi,

When I start the browser to play music it tends to be an interrupted
signal, a hiccuping, almost like a record skip. I close the browser
and restart the SlimServer and usually it plays fine. Almost always it
takes me two tries to get music playing smoothly. I've also noticed
that it seems to take a long time to communicate between the the
browser and SB3.

[slim] Re: Booting Slimserver in OS X ... from the command line

2006-04-01 Thread trebejo

Ok, it all came down to deleting these two files:

~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.searchindexcache

which automatically get re-created when you click on "Start" in the
preference pane button for slimserver.

For some reason, the files as they were were messing things up.

Thanks folks (and good eye kanoot, that was a sneaky one to catch).

So as far as I can tell, when gremlins got your mac and you don't want
to do the windoze approach of wiping the OS and reinstalling (ugh), do
these:

i) run disk utility and verify system drive and permissions
ii) wipe out the files as outlined in this post
iii) wipe out slimserver and reinstall it (I didn't have to do that
this time)

I really, really think this has to go in some obvious place in the
documentation (maybe even the little booklet that gets shipped with the
squeezebox) so that people that are not comfortable with surfing around
the directories in a mac can still use the device "just like a cd
player".

I assume that this is more an OS issue than an application issue
(although I don't know for sure), but it's still a robustness issue
with the device and its server if something upstream breaks as
mysteriously--and then gets fixed as easily--as this one did.

One plus I'll mention before I go--the staff at slimdevices reads these
posts and pitches in when they know something. They will have less of
that to do if they put this tip somewhere. :)

Cheers,

trebejo

Instead of changing two sets of tags, just change the FLAC set and then
batch convert them to MP3 using Foobar2000 (or similar). Admitedly the
encoding time will be significant for 300 albums, but at least it can

It means going through 300 albums with MP3tag and adding an extra tag

There are some crazy statistics of the amount of power wasted my

[slim] slimserver losing playlists

2006-04-01 Thread mark3866

My slimserver is losing my playlists. I have a directory with about
three .m3u playlists in it of varying sizes. One has only four songs
in it. I am correctly pointed to it in slimserver and the playlists do
not show up in browse playlists in either slimserver or on my shiny new
squeezebox. Tech support has walked me through the usual stuff. The
directory is correctly pointed to it in the software. (As a matter of
fact when I make a new playlist DIRECTLY FROM SLIMSERVER it puts that
playlist in the directory that is specified. I can see it in the dir,
but it does not show up on slimserver or squeezebox.) It is not
even recognizing it's own playlist right after creating it, and it DOES
create it in the specified directory

Very Happy New Squeezebox Owner

Yeah, I'm inclined to believe that I just got a bad unit (perhaps part
of a bad lot of displays) because my older SB2 shows the clock at full
brightness whenever it's off and it shows no signs of burn-in at all.

The two SBs are in the same house so any power-related issues would
probably affect both of them, unless the problem was the wall wart.
The only other difference is that I dim the SB3 at night, but it seems
counter-intuitive that the dimming would accellerate burn-in unless the
displays don't like that PWM (that I assume is) going on, but again,
that's just not very intuitive...

I thought so. Today I found that one album gets listed twice, i.e. it
contains 16 songs and if I add it to the playlist, SlimServer will add
32 songs, each song twice. I've found this in just one album so far
(Les Paul-American made-World Played, bought at allofMP3.com in 180kB

As a mac user (no mp3tag) what else can I do check the tags?

The files in question where SlimServer plays song#8 1st, are AAC,
encoded with iTunes, so there should be no issue on just a single
album.

I don't understand that question. I have 'use iTunes' checked and Slim
does use my iT playlists, albums, etc. Where can I set the pref you're

[slim] Re: Slimserver fails to start/stay on

2006-04-01 Thread MrStan

It happened to me recently when updating from 6.1.1 on Windows XP. The
installer failed to install Slim as a service although I had asked it
to start automatically.

All you need to do is follow the instructions in the Wiki,
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?WindowsInstallationGuide
Note:
While you are given the option to run Slimserver service automatically
when you install on Wiindows, you may want to install and run the
SlimServer Windows service by hand.
Follow these instructions:

Open a "cmd" window and type "cd C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server".
Type "slim.exe -install auto" to install the SlimServer software so it
will automatically start as a Windows Service the next time you
reboot.

This fixed the problem for me.

[slim] Recalling previous search

2006-04-01 Thread jbschwartz

I'm a SliMP3 user from the early days, and have yet to figure this one
outI'd like be to able to recall the previous search *after*
listening to the current songs. It goes like this...

When I initially search for music, I get the opportunity to choose from
all the artists/albums/songs found at that time. Fine. I pick one. It
starts playing. If I change my mind, I can LEFT ARROW and choose
another from the found list. It plays.

However, once the selection has been played and the player stops, the
original FOUND LIST is gone. Pressing the LEFT ARROW produces only
"NOW PLAYING". I would need to re-enter my search from the beginning.

Note: I know how to use PLAY ALL, to avoid needing to repeat the
search, but that forces hearing all songs, which is not desired.

So...exactly when does the player/server decide that I no longer need
the previous search results, and how do I convince it to retain them?

Thanks

Jonathan

You can also walk through each field rapidly without changing it using
the FWD button.

Although as others have stated the best thing is to wait for a few
seconds and it will connect on its own.

The Squeezebox is intended to be an always-on device. In fact, the
blank screensaver is a recent addition as it usually uses a clock

[slim] Re: SB power usage and automatic power switch

2006-04-01 Thread Mark Lanctot

The SB3 does not draw enough power to reliably trigger one of those
things.

There's an extensive chart out there somewhere which shows the current
draw when in standby, playing, display off, etc. but IIRC you can
assume 1.2A draw at 5V. That's only 6W. The power supply itself is
only rated at 2A = 10W at 5V.

There were a few solutions proposed and I believe someone came up with
a circuit that definitely involves soldering. There's a non-soldering
solution involving an IR-triggered power strip with the SB3 IR blaster.
This power strip is available in the UK. Unfortuantely I can't find
that thread.

[slim] Why SlimServer stop and how to avoid it

2006-04-01 Thread OperaBen

Hi,

I have seen posts before regarding server stopped for unknown reasons,
and saw discussion on whether run SlimServer as a service automatically
or from command line.

I myself encounter this server stopped problem several times recently.
It happend on the official 6.2.1, last night's 6.2.2, and many versions
of 6.2.5b. It becomes very annoying now since when the server stopped,
it did not automatically restart even though I have set the
automaticlly restart service on slimserver from the service pane in the
"right click my computer -> manage" window.

When this happened, I checked the event log and I saw error but said
the cause for the error was not identified. It's OK to have the error,
but this restart service automatically is not effective since the
server remained stopped forever.

Can someone help me identify what is causing this problem? And how to
avoid it? Thanks a millions!

No, I thought about that, or the fact that the tags might be slightly
different from the album folder name, but that wasn't it. Problem
remained even after I removed the folder entirely and re-ripped.
However, when I used the same mirrored file (on a separate hard drive)

[slim] Can´t connect to local Slimserver on Por t9000 - Win XP

2006-04-01 Thread superguddy777

Hi all,

I have a problem with SlimServer:
I can´t connect to the local installed Slimserver on my PC on Port
9000.

The Windows XP internal Firewall is switched off, and the Slimserver is
running.

If I click on "open Slimserver" the IE6 browswer starts with:
http://localhost:9000/

but the result is "This site can`t be showed..."
What can I do?

Many thanks, Mathias

2006-04-01 Thread gdsqueeze

I had the same problem last week when I was trying to setup Music IP
Mixer 1.6B2, I disactivated the music magic in slim server, it seems to
fix the problem. I have not tried seting up Music mixer again after
that.

[slim] Re: Slimserver PC going into standby

2006-04-01 Thread Browny

Ok - I'm not really a Perl guy, but we had a similar problem for a VB
application we had at work.

The VB solution below may help to shed some light on whats needed to do
it in Perl:

http://www.freevbcode.com/ShowCode.Asp?ID=2596

Or you may be able to use it in a VB Script with the Execute Script
plugin...

[slim] Re: SB3 stopped working - (long)

2006-04-01 Thread MrStan

I have used wireless for some time using softsqueeze with mixed results.
Intermittant dropouts and on one occassion complete loss of connection
for a day even though I tried changing channels. Wireless appears to be
unable to pass through some wall surfaces and relies upon scatter ot
find it's way around your house and it is also liable to interference.
mainly from Microwaves although I did notice that I lost connection
every time a neighbour used her remote control to open her car. Yes, I
know that in the UK these car remotes are no where near the same
frequency but the effect was very reliable.

I have now moved to the second generation (85Mbs) HomePlug Ethernet
over Mains and have had a stabile connection for the past three weeks.
The product worked straight from the box and will even work across
mains extensions providing they have to mains filtering within them.

I use mainly flac and can do file browsing and file transfer across the
link simultaneously without problems. I might now take the final step
and get a squeezebox now that I am happy with the connection.

Wired & wireless do the same on power-on. My house is off-grid & a
SB2 in standby eats about 6watts so they mostly stay off.

A possibility.. But I'm sure there must be a way to prevent XP from
going into standby when there is network activity.. I just cant find
it.

For the same reason (audio cabinet) I'd like to buy a squeezebox2.
Should be black or platinum coloured. Please email me!

You can have the best of both worlds. I only use FLAC but I believe
MP3 can do the same. In FLAC there is a tag for 'Artistsort' as well
as 'Artist'. So if you set:

Artist = Russell Watson
and
Aristsort = Watson, Russell

SlimServer will display this under the 'W's but as first/last name.

Hope that helps.

I don't know what you mean by checked. If you mean scanned by
Slimserver then there is a plug in which allows you to scan once every
24 hours. If you keep loosing albums it could be because your ripping
software isn;t tagging the files properly.

Trash and crappy aren't words I'd use. I do have an issue with the fact
that some of the advanced features are poorly documented, but the
software works perfectly for me. I just rip using EAC and encode using
FLAC in one pass directly onto a Windows Small Business Server which
has around 8 clients accessing it during the course of the day and it
runs 4 Squeezeboxes perfectly. Audio quality may not be a priority for
you, but it certainly is for me.

Perhaps if you changed the tone of your post, explained your problem in
detail someone might dive in and help you.

What ripping software do you use?
How are you encoding your files - and what format?
How is your music organised?

I've been waiting for years for networked mp3 players to come of age
and Slimserver together with the Squeezebox 3 does everything I want to
and because of the nature of the Open Source software it will continue
to evolve as users require and add more features.

Sorry, it is "the UnCheck Songs In ITunes" setting. Glad to hear about
your 1000 albums. My SS is on my secondary computer that gets used on
occasion. I am not sure computer use is the problem. I would pay
extra for a Win App that just did display and play.

I've got a relatively small collection (300 CDs), but as it grows it is
going to become increasingly difficult to browse. How do those of you
wit large collections tag Artist names?

Surname, Forname, or the way it comes down from freedb
Forname Surname
