[slim] Re: streaming AAC files in native format
As has already been said, this won't work, the SB will not play AAC without server-side transcoding. There is very little downside to having the stream transcoded on the server, though: the only functionality you lose is ffwd/rew within a track while playing. Is your concern about the load on the server with transcoding going on? Most people don't find this an issue, are you planning on having lots of streams at once? As far as I understand, if the ALBUMARTIST tag is set (you mentioned it is set to Various Artists) then slimserver doesn't try to detect compilations automatically. In this case the COMPILATION tag is not automatically set and therefore the group compilations option does not apply. You have either to delete the ALBUMARTIST tag or to set the COMPILATION tag manually. -- dip dip's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=902 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24724 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I have to agree that this must be a bug and (even if it isn't) the release of 6.3 should have been put back until it was sorted (one way or another). However, if it helps you at all Bradley I found is very easy to get round by opening all my compilation albums at once in FooBar2000 (as I am on Windows) and adding the tag COMPILATION value 1. Luckily for me all my Compilation album folders begin with VA to they were instant to identify. The extra features included with 6.3 made this well worth doing. The important bit here is perl interpreter failed - that means basically something bad happened but we're not sure what - it's the catch-all error message. So debugging this could be tricky. If you search the forums (from the advanced search page) for that phrase you'll get a bunch of threads talking about it. A common cause seems to be bad playlists - so I'd start by taking out all your playlist files. Another one is specific music files (tags it doesn't like, etc), so try taking out almost all of your music and see if it stays running any longer. This link : http://tinyurl.com/p2x59 contains some information on how to get (hopefully) more detailed information about the error. Perhaps this is the wrong venue, but I'm sure somebody here will be happy to inform mw of that... I have no idea if this is even possible, but 2 issues I find with the Squeezebox (3) are... Disabling JVC remote codes only works when your computer is on. Once you've shut the power sucker off settle down in front of the brain sucker, the JVC codes are active again. Every time you pause your JVC DVD the Squeezebox lights up for a moment or two. Big deal? Not really, but it would be great if that could go away. It would also be great if the time would display when the computer was shut down. I suspect this is even less likely, but maybe that info could be pulled off the Squeezenetwork somehow? The clock feature is pretty spiffy (I've always thought that VCR/DVD manufacturers got it wrong with their display options...Dimmed when off. Isn't that what most people use for a clock?), but not worth keeping the computer/server on for. These are pretty minor quibbles, perhaps insurmountable. Other than these 2 items, I am very pleased with the performance ease of use. I had an Omnifi DMS1 set up previously, it was an exercise in frustration. Had a 10,000 song limit unless you used buggy third party software. In contrast everything I've done with SS has been very slick. I think I found an easy answer From Wiki Wrote: Scanning your library Of course, you will want to keep adding new music to your slimserver library... or perhaps you will have updated the tags in your files. In either case, slimserver needs to be told that something has changed in the library so that it can update its database. This is done by the scanning process. You can do this as a one-off, or schedule slimserver to rescan, say, every night. * Tip: if you've just added a single album, you can force slimserver to read the files (and add it to the library) without doing a complete rescan just by browsing to it using Browse Music Folder... -- blkwrx blkwrx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4664 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25046 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Difficulty accessing hard disks with SlimCD
(I tried posting this on the Linux/Unix forum, but got some Invalid forum message.) I have a computer that normally boots in Win98 that I wish to use with SlimCD when serving music (mainly because Win98 chokes when piping flac-wav-mp3 to my SB1). I have three drives: the Win98 boot drive, the music drive (200GB in two partitions) and a (Suse) Linux-formatted drive. The first is on a normal IDE connector, and the others are on ATA-100 connectors. Win98 sees the first two just fine; I think the last is hidden because Windows doesn't recognize the Linux file system on it. I can't use the other IDE connector for the music drive because it's too big for Win98. The problem is that DSL can't access either of the drives on the ATA-100 connectors. The MB manufacturer (Gigabyte) offers beta Linux drivers, but has no clue how to install them (when downloaded, the file is a Windows executable, for some strange reason). When I Google for Promise ATA/100 Linux Drivers, I get the impression that the 2.4 kernel should handle ATA/100 natively, and the DSL wiki says that it uses 2.4. Although, with some of the mudsligning, I'm not sure I'd feel motivated either to be honest. Having the problem not go away is bizarre. Hopefully it is just the lingering slimserversql.db. However, it is possible in a great number of ways to have this kind of problem. As things progress, and being completely open, there are always nudges from users along the way with special interests. Tweak something to handle that, and another case gets mixed up. Now, this may not always be a user thing. If playlists, for example, are created one way then things change, a rescan might not like it. Taking into account my huge sample group of 1 (me), that could be one explanation as the nature of the poking around that I do tends to result in destruction of playlists regularly. I'm also updating daily, running multiple copies of the server, rather than going through any upgrade/downgrade stuff. Also of note: I almost never just listen to music any more. Free time ends up with me looking over some bug report or another, even if only absent mindedly. Thus, even playlists that I do create aren't normal. Of course, it means I also don't have a clean library (lots of deliberate buggy files) so I don't notice a handful of dupes mixed in among deliberate duplicates of albums in different formats, etc. Anyway, this issue is now in as bug3658, so it's being tracked. -k ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

We used to have a lot more problems connecting to wireless routers, but recent work has solved a lot of them. Your post might indicate there's still an issue or two, though. Have you tried to see if changing the modem settings has any effect? You might try, for instance, if it is set to WPA/WPA2 auto, to set it to just one or the other. Or try WEP instead, if it's supported. Or, temporarily, set it to 'no security'. Also, many modems/routers have firewall features to filter packets from various addresses or ports. If you have 'MAC address filtering' turned on, you might need to add the mac address of the Squeezebox to a list in order for most traffic to be allowed through. Or perhaps you have some of the ports that the Squeezebox uses (9000 and 3483) filtered. Re: [slim] Re: 6.3.0: Many Duplicate Albums Listed (as well as duped New Music, Album Art, etc)
In the past I believe the scanning part of the software attempted to be clever and interpret what albums should be regarded as compilations. A recent change to fix other issues with scanning compilations has perhaps changed the guessing functionality. I'm a bit hazy on the specifics. Proper tagging of your music library would certainly help. This would have benefits such as perhaps working better in other software packages, and perhaps make scanning faster. Its a bit like the rules for guessing missing tags in music files - they don't work too well. It's much better to have proper tags so the scanner knows how to treat albums. I'm sure the developers are doing their best. I'm sure the releases are tested fairly well. They have to make the software cater for many different situations. Problems like this will happen, but I'm sure problems will be rectified. So, I suggest you consider some of the other advice already given for quickly setting the COMPILATION tag correctly for your various artists albums, and perhaps be a tad less aggressive to the developers who are doing their best. Alternatively, raise a bug report and see if you can provide some useful information to help the developers fix the issue for your situation. I began having this same problem after upgrading to 6.3.0, and in my case it appears to be related to the data coming in from MusicIP Server, rather than from SlimServer's own scan. If I do a full rescan with Don't use MusicMagic the duplicate albums are gone. If, on the other hand, I point SlimServer's music library at an empty folder, and enable MusicMagic, I get all of the duplicates, which completely eliminates SlimServer's own scan from the experiment. You might be able to hack that pref into the prefs file and see how that turns out. This feature does not exists, should be easy to implement I guess. just sleep(n); before playing the next song. that woudl block everything else from happening as well, on all players, for web and remote control input. Am I the only one who would like to see this feature in the players? probably not, but I'm guessing it is still a small number. either you can file requests at bugs.slimdevices.com, select enhancement as the severity and let people vote on it. -kdf ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: streaming AAC files in native format
If he's trying to work with a software client, I suppose he could do something wacky like encapsulate his AAC files with a RIFF (wav) header. It'll play noise on a Squeezebox since AAC data is not a valid wav file, but the data will be intact on the other end for his software to decode as it pleases. As Mark points out, the only problem isn't that Slimserver can't stream AAC; with a bit of hacking it can stream anything. It just *doesn't* out-of-the-box because Squeezeboxes can't decode AAC. Anyway, if he's a programmer, I've heard Slimserver's open source. :) -- ChrisOwens Christopher Owens QA Manager [EMAIL PROTECTED] (510) 743-1152 x717 ChrisOwens's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4240 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25053 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Slimserver wont start
The problem was some mp3 files I had ripped in iTunes. For some unknown reason iTunes created a folder name with unprintable characters in the name. I changed iTunes setting to Keep iTunes Music folder organized (in Preferences, Advanced, General). This caused iTunes to rename the folders and that did it - Slimserver started working again. -- maxheadroom maxheadroom's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6212 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25080 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Firmware
If you've installed 6.3.0 and it contains a new firmware version, your Squeezebox should prompt you to press and hold the brightness button to update the firmware. If it hasn't, hold it down anyway. That will load the firmware contained in your SlimServer. If it's still 54 after you do this, you don't have 6.3.0 official. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25098 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Slimserver stops after running for 30-45 seconds
You're the man! I ditched Itunes and rescanned my music folder after reinstalling Slimserver. It works like a charm for the time being. Now I plan to waste another 5 days trying to get Sailing Clicker to work on my Treo. Thanks for your help. -- brentb brentb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6181 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25069 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
