[slim] Re: streaming AAC files in native format

2006-06-29 Thread ceejay

As has already been said, this won't work, the SB will not play AAC
without server-side transcoding.

There is very little downside to having the stream transcoded on the
server, though: the only functionality you lose is ffwd/rew within a
track while playing.

Is your concern about the load on the server with transcoding going on?
Most people don't find this an issue, are you planning on having lots of
streams at once?

2006-06-29 Thread dip

As far as I understand, if the ALBUMARTIST tag is set (you mentioned it
is set to Various Artists) then slimserver doesn't try to detect
compilations automatically. In this case the COMPILATION tag is not
automatically set and therefore the group compilations option does not
apply. You have either to delete the ALBUMARTIST tag or to set the
COMPILATION tag manually.

There is a tick box for Part of a compilation or something like that.

I assume this relates to the compilation tag ?

2006-06-29 Thread jbuccino

I use a Mac but refuse to use the Itunes Music Store because I feel that
DRM is a violation of my rights to play music that I have purchased on
any device of my choice.

I do, however, use iTunes to manage and digitize all my music. It is
very good at those functions and integrates well with my various iPods
and Slim Devices products.

I choose not to buy music online (iTunes Music Store or others) to
avoid DRM. I buy new music on physical CD media (mostly from Amazon
because of overnight delivery) and immediately rip it into iTunes. This
works quite well for me and gives me both digital and physical back
ups.

You do not have to use the iTunes Music Store in order to have iTunes

It's ruining my experience with this product -- It will no doubt ruin
the experience of other users (especially new users).

I have a huge music library of solely FLAC files and many, many

It is LUDICROUS to ask me to go into some editor and resave tags. The
tags are fine. THE CODE IS BROKEN, not the Tags. All I did was take a
fully functioning 6.2.2 release and install 6.3.0. Developers MUST fix
it, NOT put the burden on users.

If you folks changed the way the system handles tags, then either write
a compatibility layer that bridges any changes in logic, or write a
converter that fixes tags to what Slimserver needs to see.

As a former VP of Development and CTO at many firms, I would never
tolerate a situation like this -- nor a release of software that breaks
basic functionality. Where is the regression testing?

A word to SlimDevices: It's great that you've enjoyed success to date
with your products, but start facilitating BS like this 6.3.0 release
and watch your customer base rapidly shrink towards zero.

directing you to the ongoing discussion about this issue (which you
seemingly didn't even bother to look three threads down for), as well

pending something more focused from SD.

For myself, my current theory is that its something to do with the way
that Slimserver reads the ALBUMARTIST tags in 6.3.0. As you say, it
may be a bug or it may be a logic / conflict issue, but I haven't yet
been able to reproduce it at will.

Or perhaps you might want to file a bug yourself if you're not happy to
follow my suggestion ? It's usually the best way to get the developers
attention, rather than sounding off on these fora.

I have to agree that this must be a bug and (even if it isn't) the
release of 6.3 should have been put back until it was sorted (one way
or another).

However, if it helps you at all Bradley I found is very easy to get
round by opening all my compilation albums at once in FooBar2000 (as I
am on Windows) and adding the tag COMPILATION value 1. Luckily for
me all my Compilation album folders begin with VA to they were instant
to identify.

The extra features included with 6.3 made this well worth doing.

2006-06-29 Thread maxheadroom

I have SB2 and slimserver running on XP. For the first month all was

start, then EI would give the URL not found for http://localhost:9000. I
checked all settings and firewall permissions and all are they were when
slimserver worked.

I read through other posts here and I can see others have similar
problems. I tried all ideas already suggested but nothing works. I also
tried uninstalling and installing version 6.3.

Yesterday I checked in the Event Viewer and found this message from
when Slimserver tried to start:

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be
found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following
information is part of the event: Perl interpreter failed.

The Perl interpreter failed makes me wonder. Slimserver is written in
Perl I believe.

Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance!

think may be relevant. It discusses a bug fix for another problem. In

anticipated.

I think this shows that the Slim folks did at least consider what they

relative importance of the problem being fixed vs the one being
introduced, but I think the discussion would go smoother with a little

[slim] Re: Slimserver stops after running for 30-45 seconds

2006-06-29 Thread radish

The important bit here is perl interpreter failed - that means
basically something bad happened but we're not sure what - it's the
catch-all error message.

So debugging this could be tricky. If you search the forums (from the
advanced search page) for that phrase you'll get a bunch of threads
talking about it. A common cause seems to be bad playlists - so I'd
start by taking out all your playlist files. Another one is specific
music files (tags it doesn't like, etc), so try taking out almost all
of your music and see if it stays running any longer.

This link : http://tinyurl.com/p2x59 contains some information on how
to get (hopefully) more detailed information about the error. You could
try that and see if it yields more clues.

[slim] Re: Best way to install Slimsever?

depends if you are going forward or backward... in my experience if you
are stepping down a version .. say beta 6.5 to 6.2.2 then you will need
to do an uninstall.. but if moving up a level then no need to perform an
uninstall

As far as I understand, if the ALBUMARTIST tag is set (you mentioned it
is set to Various Artists) then slimserver doesn't try to detect
compilations automatically. In this case the COMPILATION tag is not
automatically set and therefore the group compilations option does not
apply. You have either to delete the ALBUMARTIST tag or to set the
 COMPILATION tag manually.

This isn't quite how its working. For my FLAC files that have ALBUM
ARTIST set to Various Artists, the individual artists do not appear
when GCAT is set. When GCAT is unset, individual artists appear. This
works fine.

For the WMA files, WMP sets WM/AlbumArtist to Various Artists, but
unlike FLAC files, all artists show up regardless of the GCAT setting,
AND the Various Arists artist appears as well.

I have no COMPILATION tags anywhere.

The behaviour of FLAC and WMA files should be consistent when tagged
typically and properly. Since WMP sets WM/AlbumArtist, (which
SlimServer internally maps to ALBUMARTIST), the logical that hides
artists for WMA should be the same as that used for FLAC.

[slim] Firmware requests-if possible?

2006-06-29 Thread ZappaLover

Perhaps this is the wrong venue, but I'm sure somebody here will be
happy to inform mw of that...

I have no idea if this is even possible, but 2 issues I find with the
Squeezebox (3) are...

Disabling JVC remote codes only works when your computer is on. Once
you've shut the power sucker off settle down in front of the brain
sucker, the JVC codes are active again. Every time you pause your JVC
DVD the Squeezebox lights up for a moment or two. Big deal? Not really,
but it would be great if that could go away.

It would also be great if the time would display when the computer was
shut down. I suspect this is even less likely, but maybe that info
could be pulled off the Squeezenetwork somehow? The clock feature is
pretty spiffy (I've always thought that VCR/DVD manufacturers got it
wrong with their display options...Dimmed when off. Isn't that what
most people use for a clock?), but not worth keeping the
computer/server on for.

These are pretty minor quibbles, perhaps insurmountable. Other than
these 2 items, I am very pleased with the performance ease of use. I
had an Omnifi DMS1 set up previously, it was an exercise in
frustration. Had a 10,000 song limit unless you used buggy third party
software. In contrast everything I've done with SS has been very
slick.

TIA,
Kevin

I don't use iTunes to purchase music, also prefering to purchase CDs and
rip to FLAC instead using the excellent Max utility.

I have a couple of Applescripts that I use to transcode from FLAC to my
iTunes library (MP3) for playback on the Mac itself and syncing to the
iPod.

I hope to have this more automated shortly, so that after ripping, the
MP3 transcode is automatically generated and iTunes is automatically
updated.

I think I found an easy answer

From Wiki Wrote:

 Scanning your library

Of course, you will want to keep adding new music to your slimserver
library... or perhaps you will have updated the tags in your files. In
either case, slimserver needs to be told that something has changed in
the library so that it can update its database. This is done by the
scanning process. You can do this as a one-off, or schedule slimserver
 to rescan, say, every night.

 * Tip: if you've just added a single album, you can force slimserver to
read the files (and add it to the library) without doing a complete
rescan just by browsing to it using Browse Music Folder...

Hundreds? Not thousands then? :-). Actually I had this problem once
with 6.3, multiple albums and multiple tracks, but I thought my problem
was due the fact I had been installing the modified perl files issued as
the result of a fix singly into my SlimServer installation, so did not
do more than mention it in a thread.
Anyway, it went away as soon as I reinstalled a 6.3 nightly.
The thing with Ledwidge's problem is that he can't get rid of it which
is very wierd as, afaik if he uninstalled and deleted the SlimServer
directory in Program Files there is no way that there could be any
information left over for his next installation of SlimServer to pick
up. As SlimServer does not write tags it cannot be that his tags have
changed so I'm completely stumped.

[slim] Difficulty accessing hard disks with SlimCD

2006-06-29 Thread dbls

(I tried posting this on the Linux/Unix forum, but got some Invalid
forum message.)

I have a computer that normally boots in Win98 that I wish to use with
SlimCD when serving music (mainly because Win98 chokes when piping
flac-wav-mp3 to my SB1). I have three drives: the Win98 boot drive,
the music drive (200GB in two partitions) and a (Suse) Linux-formatted
drive. The first is on a normal IDE connector, and the others are on
ATA-100 connectors. Win98 sees the first two just fine; I think the
last is hidden because Windows doesn't recognize the Linux file system
on it. I can't use the other IDE connector for the music drive because
it's too big for Win98.

The problem is that DSL can't access either of the drives on the
ATA-100 connectors. The MB manufacturer (Gigabyte) offers beta Linux
drivers, but has no clue how to install them (when downloaded, the file
is a Windows executable, for some strange reason).

When I Google for Promise ATA/100 Linux Drivers, I get the impression
that the 2.4 kernel should handle ATA/100 natively, and the DSL wiki
says that it uses 2.4.

Any suggestions?

I'd assume that if you'll be yanking the hard drive and hauling into

more than a single album at a time. Browse Music Folder would work,
but it's pretty tedious (particularly using the remote) to add more

If you're talking about using the 'Rescan Music Library' scheduler

My guess is I would only be adding a CD or two at a time. I'll do the

be adding CD purchases. If I ever need to rescan the whole library I
can initiate it using a thumb drive and a inf file like I mentioned

me too. I hate saying well, it works for me. well, ok, glad that I
CAN say that, but it means I can't offer much help. Although, with
some of the mudsligning, I'm not sure I'd feel motivated either to be
honest. Having the problem not go away is bizarre. Hopefully it is
just the lingering slimserversql.db. However, it is possible in a
great number of ways to have this kind of problem. As things
progress, and being completely open, there are always nudges from
users along the way with special interests. Tweak something to handle
that, and another case gets mixed up. Now, this may not always be a
user thing. If playlists, for example, are created one way then
things change, a rescan might not like it. Taking into account my
huge sample group of 1 (me), that could be one explanation as the
nature of the poking around that I do tends to result in destruction
of playlists regularly. I'm also updating daily, running multiple
copies of the server, rather than going through any upgrade/downgrade
stuff.

Also of note: I almost never just listen to music any more. Free
time ends up with me looking over some bug report or another, even if
only absent mindedly. Thus, even playlists that I do create aren't
normal. Of course, it means I also don't have a clean library (lots of
deliberate buggy files) so I don't notice a handful of dupes mixed in
among deliberate duplicates of albums in different formats, etc.

Anyway, this issue is now in as bug3658, so it's being tracked.

i.e. nothing additional was displayed beyond the song info you have

In 6.3, the display has been altered. Adding the progress bar graphic

[slim] Re: Versalink 327W Problems

2006-06-29 Thread ChrisOwens

We used to have a lot more problems connecting to wireless routers, but
recent work has solved a lot of them.

Your post might indicate there's still an issue or two, though.

Have you tried to see if changing the modem settings has any effect?
You might try, for instance, if it is set to WPA/WPA2 auto, to set it
to just one or the other. Or try WEP instead, if it's supported. Or,
temporarily, set it to 'no security'.

Also, many modems/routers have firewall features to filter packets from
various addresses or ports. If you have 'MAC address filtering' turned
on, you might need to add the mac address of the Squeezebox to a list
in order for most traffic to be allowed through. Or perhaps you have
some of the ports that the Squeezebox uses (9000 and 3483) filtered.

Have a look and see what's up in your modem configuration!

side pane turns white and does not show the chosen music until I
manually refresh the page. This does not occur when using any of the
other browse functions..only browse music folder.

I have tested this in Firefox 1.5 and IE Explorersame result.

It seems to be skin related.

It malfunctions with dark, purple, bagpuss,NBMU, and touch

but not with default, default2

Suggestions?

Re: [slim] Difficulty accessing hard disks with SlimCD

2006-06-29 Thread Michael Herger

When I Google for Promise ATA/100 Linux Drivers, I get the impression
that the 2.4 kernel should handle ATA/100 natively, and the DSL wiki
says that it uses 2.4.

I can't say for sure what's compatible and what's not. But why do you know
that they're not recognized?

This seems to happen in any of the forums when you take long enough to
write your post so that your session expires. Then when you submit the

it is indeed. the link is pointing to status_header.html, which is
only found in skins like Default, Fishbone, Default2, etc.

it's a fix that doesn't have to wait for a new build, however:

look for c:\program files\slimserve\server\HTML\EN\browsetree-list.html
open it in any text editor (wordpad is good on windows)
find the line:
[% PROCESS browselinks.html header='1' width='13' height='13'
target='status' urlcmd='play' cmdstring='PLAY' %]

remove header='1'
save the file.

That will fix most of the skins that are broken. It will break
fishbone, but that's a matter of adding header='1' again in the right
place if you feel the need to use that skin.

I can merge in a full fix in for the nightlies.

Re: [slim] Re: 6.3.0: Many Duplicate Albums Listed (as well as duped New Music, Album Art, etc)

2006-06-29 Thread Philip Meyer
In the past I believe the scanning part of the software attempted to be clever
and interpret what albums should be regarded as compilations.

A recent change to fix other issues with scanning compilations has perhaps
changed the guessing functionality. I'm a bit hazy on the specifics. Proper
tagging of your music library would certainly help. This would have benefits
such as perhaps working better in other software packages, and perhaps make
scanning faster.

Its a bit like the rules for guessing missing tags in music files - they don't
work too well. It's much better to have proper tags so the scanner knows how
to treat albums.

I'm sure the developers are doing their best. I'm sure the releases are tested
fairly well. They have to make the software cater for many different
situations. Problems like this will happen, but I'm sure problems will be
rectified.

So, I suggest you consider some of the other advice already given for quickly
setting the COMPILATION tag correctly for your various artists albums, and
perhaps be a tad less aggressive to the developers who are doing their best.

Alternatively, raise a bug report and see if you can provide some useful
information to help the developers fix the issue for your situation.

[slim] Slimserver 6.3 is not reading my second drive

2006-06-29 Thread Peter Evans

Folks,

I was using windows XP, slimserver 6.2.2, SB1 and SB2, and everything
was running perfectly, scanning my 32000 songs in less than 45
minutes.

I was having the famous 30-second freeze, which was not present with
the previous 6.0 versions.

Now with 6.3, it's not reading the tags on the second drive. I can get
through the windows shortcut with Browse Music Folder to that
directory, but it still can't read the tags (Flac files). On the
positive side the 30 second freeze has been eliminated.

I've also tried 6.5, same thing.

Is anybody having this problem?

Peter

[slim] Re: Advice would be appreciated!!

2006-06-29 Thread sebage

I can weigh in with another Powerline recommendation. I just bought a
pair of the Netgear adaptors. I live in NYC and gradually the
interference of the 20+ (and growing) wireless networks that battle
with my own G network - regardless of channel - was really getting
frustrating. The adaptors are literally plug and play and easily have
enough bandwidth to stream FLAC to my SB3. No more drop outs, choppy
sections or command latency!

The other machines on my wireless network are also now more content, as
there isn't a flood on bandwidth every 4 mins when the track changes!

Good solution!

[slim] Can't connect to slimserver anymore

2006-06-29 Thread dangerous_dom

I have been running an ad hoc wifi setup between my PC and SB3 perfectly
well for a few months.

But now i can not longer connect my SB3. The strange thing is that my
PC seems show the connection is fine and when i go into view current
settings it show the signal strengh as 90%.

I have tried everything i can think off over the last 6 hours, but it
just won't connenet to my wireless network.

One thing i did do was install SS 6.3, but would this have made a
difference? I can't connect to my wireless network anymore so it has
not even been able to try and access SS yet.

Any idea's? I'm completey lost!

[slim] Re: 6.3.0: Many Duplicate Albums Listed (as well as duped New Music, Album Art, etc)

2006-06-29 Thread bmountney

I began having this same problem after upgrading to 6.3.0, and in my
case it appears to be related to the data coming in from MusicIP
Server, rather than from SlimServer's own scan.

If I do a full rescan with Don't use MusicMagic the duplicate albums
are gone. If, on the other hand, I point SlimServer's music library at
an empty folder, and enable MusicMagic, I get all of the duplicates,
which completely eliminates SlimServer's own scan from the experiment.

So, SlimServer appears to be misinterpreting MusicMagic's data.

[slim] New feature request for players (hard and soft)

2006-06-29 Thread balson
I have been using my slim device now since december of last year, and soft squeeze for the last 2-3 months. I like them both very much. However, something is missing that I would love to have. And that is a delay between the songs. Not a cross fade, which is already there. But a delay  in between the songs, which would mean silence for some number of seconds. I like to listen to my music with a 15-45 second gap in between the songs. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter.	This feature does not exists, should be easy to implement I guess. just "sleep(n);" before playing the next song. for players with digital output, there is a player setting that can
add 0-5 seconds before a song start (to allow for DAC's to sync up).
You might be able to hack that pref into the prefs file and see how
that turns out.

This feature does not exists, should be easy to implement I guess.
just sleep(n); before playing the next song.

that woudl block everything else from happening as well, on all
players, for web and remote control input.

Am I the only one who would like to see this feature in the players?

probably not, but I'm guessing it is still a small number.

[slim] Re: streaming AAC files in native format

2006-06-29 Thread ChrisOwens

If he's trying to work with a software client, I suppose he could do
something wacky like encapsulate his AAC files with a RIFF (wav)
header. It'll play noise on a Squeezebox since AAC data is not a valid
wav file, but the data will be intact on the other end for his software
to decode as it pleases.

As Mark points out, the only problem isn't that Slimserver can't
stream AAC; with a bit of hacking it can stream anything. It just
*doesn't* out-of-the-box because Squeezeboxes can't decode AAC.

Anyway, if he's a programmer, I've heard Slimserver's open source. :)

The problem was some mp3 files I had ripped in iTunes. For some unknown
reason iTunes created a folder name with unprintable characters in the
name. I changed iTunes setting to Keep iTunes Music folder organized
(in Preferences, Advanced, General). This caused iTunes to rename the
folders and that did it - Slimserver started working again.

If you've installed 6.3.0 and it contains a new firmware version, your
Squeezebox should prompt you to press and hold the brightness button to
update the firmware.

If it hasn't, hold it down anyway. That will load the firmware
contained in your SlimServer. If it's still 54 after you do this, you
don't have 6.3.0 official.
