Thanks for the suggestions. Just tried both those reset procedures. Unfortunately it still wouldn't recognise anything from the remote, so holding down those buttons did nothing at all. The sound is coming through fine after a night of being disconnected from the power though. Looks like it might be a serious overheating issue to me. It's hot in the UK at the moment, but still considerably less than should cause the unit to overheat. It's in a well ventilated spot with no other electrical equipment around it. However, it does display the more severe symptoms (display blanking and white noise) after being left on for a while (anything from a few minutes to an hour). The mac address is fine. Just checked it via my router's diagnostics. And the screen has blanked again. Specifically, NBM does not allow communication on port 6000, which I understand the QNAP uses specifically for X-windows and for some communication exchanges. These things all add up. Our homes have many devices idling at about 3-10W - TVs, DVD/video, microwaves, phone chargers left plugged in, PCs. Let's say that's 60W per household in idle equipment. The UK has about 25m households (I think). That makes 1.5 gigawatts consumed just in the UK by equipment that's turned off. So reducing idle power consumption to 1W can make a big difference. The best solution is to provide an old fashioned thing called a power switch that lets you turn something completely off - zero watts. I'd like to see one on the Squeezebox v.4. (And my PC should have one on the front too, so I don't have to grovel on the floor to turn it off at the wall). -- mecouc mecouc's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=227 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25100 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: SB3 runs warm, even when it is idle?
Now I see a little clearer where this is going. In order to come up with a proper solution, one has to analyze the whole system and not just one component. A working slim system consists of one (generally) server, one to many squeezeboxes, one to many amplifiers or powered speakers or headphones or whatever. The squeezebox consumes about 5 watts, 4 if it turns off the display. A server consumes about 70 watts if it's a PC, about 20 watts perhaps if it's a NAS. Amplifiers consume anywhere from 20 watts up. Powered speakers I don't know. Slim Devices has gone to great lengths to turn off most of the big power consumers in this bigger picture. They have added support for WOL, which would allow the slim server, if it's running on a PC, to be turned off and woken up again. They have modified the way the slim server works so that it doesn't needless access the disk. This would allow the disk to spin down on a server that's idle, saving another 10W or so. If the case holding the disk has thermal sensing, that might shut off a fan too after a while. They have added support, 2 different ways (geek port and quieting the outputs) to turn off your amplifier when the SB is not in use. There was a request a while ago that they add relay contacts to turn off attached amplifiers. I don't know if they're considering that or not. These enhancements, turning off probably several hundred watts when the device is not in use, probably save a lot more than trimming the 5 watts the SB itself is using. However, it is possible that, in a new design, the A/D converter, the headphone amplifier and one or two other odds and ends could be turned off without compromising it's ability to turn itself back on again. I'm not sure. It's not an area that I know much about. However, were I Slim Devices, I'd work on better support for turning off the big guys first. Turning off the attached devices that are 10x or more bigger power consumers would be a higher priority for me than shrinking the consumption of the SB itself. That's my $0.02, anyways. A server consumes about 70 watts if it's a PC, about 20 watts perhaps if it's a NAS. The NAS I ordered today (not for my personal use, though) has 2x800Watt power supplies (and a processor more powerful than all my home servers together). I expect it to consume more than 20 watts. And this is where scale comes into play. 1.5 GW being used 24/7 is 13.1 billion kWh per year - and that sounds like a lot when taken out of context. But in 2003 the UK used a total of 346.1 billion kWh (http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/uk.html). Thus, all the devices left in standby in the entire country account for 0.038% of the national consumption. So sure, we could all spend time, effort and money lowering that to 0.028% (wooh!) or we could look at the bigger picture and figure out what will make an actual difference. The whole focus in recent months on standby power consumption is a complete red herring by the government to try and make people think they're serious about the environment. -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25100 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: SB3 runs warm, even when it is idle?
I think Radish has a point. Standby power is important, because it's 24/7, but for a lot of appliances, it's dwarfed by the power usage when the unit is on. Someone mentioned the standby power of a microwave. I can't imagine it has any standby requirement. I don't have a remote for my microwave. Unless there's a clock in the microwave, none of it runs when it's in standby. Televisions have a standby power consumption so that they can respond to IR codes from your remote, but more importantly, the picture tube is kept slightly warm to cut down on startup time. I'm actually old enough to remember when this wasn't true, and picture tubes took like 30 seconds to start up. The IR receiver power consumption is trivial - it's the standby current to the filaments of the video tube that's important. The SB shuts essentially none of itself down, other than dimming the screen. I suppose it could do more. But even in the small picture of the SB, server amplifier, the SB itself is small potatoes. But in the larger picture of how we spend our whole lives, we spend much more power (electricity and other forms of energy) than that by refrigerating things that don't need it, by not insulating our houses properly, by not planting trees to shade our houses and cut down on air conditioning, by living so far from work and commuting so far every day, by living in houses with 5 external surfaces to radiate heat in the winter, rather than apartments with 1 or 2, by having a car per person, a cell phone per person, by not having skylights in our houses and then turning on the lights in the middle of the day, etc, etc, etc. So, as Radish says, it would be more useful if we dealt with the larger issues rather than the smaller ones. Do things that will actually make a real difference! - use compact fluorescent lights. A 13W CF replaces a 60W incandescent, I think you use 11W CFs to replace 40W incandescents. - rather than using the large oven, use the microwave or the toaster oven. - consider newer, more efficient appliances, particularly refrigerators. My utility actually has a buyback program for old refrigerators used as secondary/beer fridges. And try to get rid of those old chest freezers. - upgrade windows - upgrade insulation. A cheap, easy thing to do is to install foam gaskets around outlets and put safety caps on outlets when not in use. These things will actually make a difference unlike a measly savings of a few watts on a Squeezebox. It's all a matter of perspective. There's a term out there, penny wise, pound foolish. There's no way for SlimServer to have two libraries. You need to run two instances of the server and connect the SqueezeBox to one or the other. If you had enough memory in your server one easy solution would be installing the free VMWare player and run SlimCD on it (128-/160MB for the VM could be enough). Hi Got a qnap connected to a sb3 via ethernet cable, no pc in the loop. Got my music file structure as artist/album/song. Now when I go into the Browse music folder all I get are extensions of filenames like bin, boot, dec .lib .media etc. The weird thing is though it was working ok (had been playing some music)Went to select a new artist and album and thats when the problem started. Even stranger is that when I select random song or random album then it selects one from the drive and plays it without any hassle. I've checked the qnap and all the music is on there, I've also made no changes to the qnap (aside from mapping it to a drive on my pc when I wanted to copy some music across). I've also not made any changes to the settings to the sb. I've tried resetting both the qnap and the sb3 without any luck. I can easily enough whack another network card in and have another interface You don't need more than one network card. You can easily have multiple IP addresses bound to one card. In Windows XP, go to: Control Panel Network Connections Local Area Connection Properties Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties You have to set up the IP addresses manually - you can't use DHCP. Select 'Use the following IP adddress' and enter an IP address, subnet mask, and gateway. You'll also have to manually enter the DNS servers. Then go to Advanced IP Settings, where you can enter as many additional IP addresses and subnet masks as you like. To run SlimServer on a particular IP address (you'll have to do this for every instance of SlimServer running on the machine) you use command-line parameters to specify the IP address: Code: C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\slim.exe --playeraddr 192.168.9.4 --httpaddr 192.168.9.4 --cliaddr 192.168.9.4 --streamaddr 192.168.9.4 I haven't played with it enough to know whether or not you can run two instances of SlimServer from the same physical files or whether you must have two completely separate installation directories. There's another command line option that tells SlimServer where the prefs file is, so I think that you might be able to use the same install and just specify different prefs files. Within the prefs file, you'd point at different database files. Copy the original and edit it manually. --prefsfile C\Program Files\SlimServer\server\slimserver.pref --prefsfile C\Program Files\SlimServer\server\slimserver2.pref Now, if you want them both to run as Windows services, you'll have to install at least one of the services yourself using Microsoft's Resource Kit tool 'instrv.exe' and then editing the registry. [slim] Combining Slimserver and PVR?
Hi all, I was just wondering about whether this was a good idea or not, and whether anyone of you good folks has tried this... I'm looking at replacing my PVR for recording TV (mainly for watching in delayed mode): my current standalone PVR is ok but once its captured a recording there's no way of moving it out except in analog mode (eg to the TV). What I'd really like to be able to do is to hook it up to my network and FTP (or whatever) those few recordings that I really want to keep - so I can edit them properly before archiving on DVD. So, we now have PVR devices which look like they will do this - for example the Dream Box ( http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/english/products_dm7025.php ) Of course, its an appliance computer running Linux. So then I think... well, if I were to get one of these and run it 24x7, why not put slimserver on it too, so I don't have to have two boxes running all the time? I have no idea how open the Linux is on these things, but I figured someone round here might know. I note that its not a high powered CPU, so I'd have to watch out for scanning time (split scanning in 6.5 might help), and also for running outof horsepower if its trying to simultaneously capture two TV programmes and serve two or three SBs Has anyone successfully combined the Dream Box or a similar Linux-based PVR with Slimserver? If so, what can you tell us about it?? Failing that, and at the risk of going OT, has anyone tried one of these WITHOUT slimserver, and was it any good? Inputs hugely appreciated. (NB - I can record digital TV off-air on to one of my desktop computers, so when I know in advance that I want to record for later editing I can do that... but this isn't in the living room, and isn't driven by a nice simple remote with a high WAF, so doesn't meet all my needs - which is why I have the standalone PVR) Ceejay -- ceejay ceejay's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=148 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25252 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Quoting bistrototal [EMAIL PROTECTED]: kdf Wrote: Is the IP given to the squeezebox in the right range to find your pc? (could it be getting one from the sitecom router, instead of your own local network?) Can you ping the squeezebox IP from your PC? -k Thanks for the quick response! I'm not able to ping the Squeezebox from my pc. The IP for my pc is 192.168.1.100 and for the Squeezebox 192.168.0.145. In the linksys administration panel it says that WAN IP is 192.168.0.114. Right, so the linksys is acting as another router after the sitecom. If you connect the SB wired to the linksys, you'll likely find that it works fine. I'm not sure about what settings options you have on the linksys, but it would be better if it acted as a bridge instead of a router, so that your PC gets it's IP from the sitecom, using the linksys only for the wireless communication link. -k ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Quoting Roy2001 [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I am not blaming SB3. Actually I really enjoy it. It is just the fact that it is warm no matter you are streaming the music or not. streaming music has nothing to do with it. The amplifier is what does the heavy work when you listen to music. SB3 is simply passing bits around using very little power, and perhaps a little more effort if you have headphones connected. It is the display that uses the power. -k ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: SB3 runs warm, even when it is idle?
The biggest reason it gets modestly warm is becuase of its small size. 5 W to 7.5 W is actually quite a bit of heat. Put that much heat in a somethign the size of a cell phone and it would burn your skin, but if it was in a big ol' metal box (like the Audio PA in your system) it would run cool as a cucumber. Maybe that's why the audiophile guys want it in a big box, less heat means less thermal noise (kTB). :o) -- Zten Zten's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1810 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25100 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Outdoor Speaker Recommendation
I never heard of this brand, but, I saw a great deal on them in the Sunday Ads. I went to Best Buy and bought a pair. They are outdoor speakers, sound pretty good (definiitely not great, but its pretty hard for anything to sound great outside). I mounted them under the eaves. Anyway, they were normally $129 for the pair, but they were on sale for $60 and you get a $20 gift card with purchase. So for $45 after tax I bought them. Best of all, I won't feel compelled to run outside and grab them when a storm comes. Although I might be nice and bring them in for the winter. -- Zten Zten's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1810 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25261 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
