[slim] Re: The Logitech remote paradox

2006-10-20 Thread Paul Webster

The (optional?) RF piece of the Harmony remote seems to conform to
z-wave
http://www.zen-sys.com/
There is an implication with the "My Pictures", reportedly seen on some
screenshots of the Harmony 1000, that it is bi-directional (assuming
that the pictures were not loaded via USB).

So - I'd imagine that an add-on to the Squeezebox or a new model with
z-wave support might be enough.
It shouldn't need wi-fi speed to get browsable cover art.

Putting the support into the firmware would be moving from slim towards
fat and from open towards closed but supporting a "standard" that seems
to be endorsed by lots of home automation vendors might be a good move.

Logitechs SlimBox = NAS
Logitechs SlimSqueeze = Squeezebox
Logitechs Transporter = N.

In the vein of the Gladiator theme tune 'now we are free' - 'now we are

Im sure whatever they decide it wont be right.

SlimStream for SB3/SB4? SlimStreamLite for the mass market
SlimTransport for Transporter?

Keep the logitech name small and discrete? (like 100nm high?, on
internal circuit boards only?)

I suppose until the new coportate identity forms noone will know!

Even if they never release another version of Slimserver, your Transporter will continue to work.  If there are any show stopping bugs and if, for some reason, SD decides not to fix them, you can bet that the community will try to do so.
I dunno -- that reasoning just doesn't make sense to me.  If I had planned on buying a Transporter last week, I don't see how this would change my plans.  I don't buy a product unless I am happy with what it does.  And if I was happy with what the Transporter did last week, then nothing has changed since then.  If Logitech someone ruins Slimserver, well, I just wouldn't upgrade.

Phew...finally reached the end..30 pages and counting...could be the

As I sat here, listening to my 8-month old SD SB3, scrolling through 30
pages of comments on my Logitech MX laser mouse, and now typing on my
Logitech MX Keyboard (both of which I actually RECEIVED a rebate for,
btw - Kudos to Logitech), I thought, wow, I'm already there and don't
even know it! I'm a Logitech / SD user!

I've been a customer and evangelist for 8 months now, and now I'll wait
and see how things turn out, but still be an evangelist for the

do back 8 months ago.

Congratulations to the SD team, and best of luck in the future, I am
hopeful for greater things to come!

Of course, in a very real sense, the Slimp3 that you have today is
nothing like the one you bought. Download the ancient version of
SlimServer, without all the massive improvements that have been made
since you bought the Slimp3, and then see how insignificant you think
the changes are.

That sort of long-term support -- enhancing an antique product no
longer manufactured and barely even used, knowing that it might cost
them sales from people who'd've otherwise upgraded -- is the kind of
thing that I hope Slim Devices can keep doing, but fear they can't.

Are you able to get a gallery view of artwork in the Browse Albums

If that doesn't work, initiate a clear library and rescan from server

Try adding it as a favorite. you can press and hold a number button to

Maybe it's best to look at it this way: The slimp3 had a strong, but
very narrow appeal. All of its successors have had wider appeal,
without losing the strength of the appeal. So to people who fit within
the narrow appeal of the original product, there is no advantage. To
people who don't, there's a huge advantage--whether the innovation is
huge or incremental is irrelevant.

The new devices are no worse than the old in ANYONE's mind, and they
are better in the minds of MANY. So, objectively, I think it's fair to
say they're better. Requiring some world-changing innovation before
giving a device any credit wouldn't give a whole lot of credit to many
very fine-quality products.

Sometimes it's implementing old ideas well for the first time that
qualifies as innovation, in my mind.

Hi,
sorry, i still dont see that there has been any major product
innovation since the slimp3. You are right, they did engeneering work
on the initial product, but from my perspective just a lot of minor
improvements (which were all wellcome, no doubt on this).

What backs my claim (at least for me) is that I am still using a slimp3
and I often thought of replacing it by one of the better looking, new
models (I have a sb3 in another room). Each time I think of really
replacing the slimp3 I come to the conclusion, that the slimp3 does the
same as a new sb3 for me. So all the "new" prodúcts in this line are
just minor improved, but none of them really opens a door to something
basicaly new. If you think adding a graphical display or a wireless
connection instead of just ethernet makes up a product innovation, than
we might have a different understanding about innovation. Adding the
obvious doesn't mean it to me.

In fact this whole thread could be said to be founded on a
misconception. You are allowed to sell GPL software for money. You
are allowed to make a profit from your sales of GPL software. You are
allowed to resell software that someone else has licensed to you under
the GPL for money. You are not obligated to make your source code
available for free to the general public. Etc, etc. Just because
people frequently choose to behave a certain way with GPL software does
not mean that they are legally obligated to do so.

The motivations for licensing software under the GPL can be varied, but
it's pretty wild speculation to claim that those motivations have been
betrayed when the licensing terms have not been violated--unless you're
talking about your own personal motivations and your own personal
software. And if you feel violated by acts that don't violate the
license, then you should have chosen a better license.

And that is the crux of the biscuit!

Logitech has just bought into a technology and an established
consumer/enthusiast base for a song (pun intended).
Not to say our beloved principals have sold out cheapno. just
to suggest that what they have created is so damn good that a company
like Logitech can take this to the next level with such ease it is
silly. They'll make a fortune and break into a new market...nice.
But as has been pointed out by many... a certain something will be
lost from the core SD brand. I for one have a hard time seeing The
Transporter with a Logitech label on it. I believe others will too.
While it is fine to say that SD will keep it's autonomy, the question
of branding still applies and there is no doubt that Logitech has
positioned itself as a mass market price driven companyand a damn
good one at that! ( I like my MX900 well enough) Changing ones brand
image is not an easy or compulsive thing to do. Ask The Coca Cola
Company. Logitech have created a great brand in every recognized sense
of the concept. Why the hell would they want to change it or go against
what it represents? Go ask Volkswagen!
These guys are mass market all the way. It's all they know.

As opposed to SD.
Just read the PR surrounding The Transporter especially the Stereophile
article. http://www.stereophile.com/news/073106transporter/

"Obviously, the Transporter is not aimed at people who are ripping
files to 128kbps MP3 files," said Patrick Cosson, Slim Devices' vice
president of sales and marketing. "That's like disposable music—what
you'd listen to at the gym. There are a lot of people—people like Slim
Devices CEO Sean Adams and myself—who listen to uncompressed audio
files and who want them to sound as good as the systems we're playing
them on can sound."

Really think the bigs at Logitech can react this way even if they think
it?

In the end...who knows..I'm just looking at history and that's what
it suggests.
But before I get nailed, this is just an opinion and I would love that
this works out a different way. Either way it is good.just
different.

Personally I do fear for the core values of SD and I am currently
holding my finger over the buy now button for a new Transporter.
I wanna press it but.

On the contrary, between the SB1 and the SB2 they completely redid
everything inside, going from an MP3 chip they bought off the shelf to
something they totally controlled themselves. Hell of a big step for a
little company.

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-20 Thread Pale Blue Ego

On the contrary, I think Slim has an excellent record of innovation.
The hardware has evolved, in only a few years, from something that was
useful but clunky and inelegant, into a best-of-breed product which
looks great, sounds great, has vastly more functionality, and is the
same price as the primitive garage-built original.

Their record of software and firmware releases is pretty spectacular,
too. Slim has been extremely agile and responsive.

And when you consider that this small company created such a thing as
the Transporter, which may not only rival but exceed other digital
delivery systems no matter the cost, that's extremely impressive.

The history of this company is something Sean and all the guys at Slim
can be very proud of. They took on many huge established companies in
the audio, computer, and networking arena, and beat them at their own
game. If it ended right here, they're still one of the most innovative
and customer-oriented companies I've ever known.

I second this, listening to my Transporter right now - I've only had it

If this is something that appeals to you, you really don't know what

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-20 Thread docbee

sorry guys,
except for sean and the inner circle that benefit from the $20m this is
extremly bad news.

I understand that the sd management prefered to take the money instead
of taking the risk of the next innovation step on their own bill. since
the really great idea of a slimp3 years ago the innovation has not been
at a noticeable high level (bigger display, wireless, new form factor,
two of the known displays in a high-end variant, bundling with storage,
better remote, ... all very obvious low risk low effort things... but
nothing like a new product idea)

I dont buy the statements about synergy for a second. Come on, an
acqisition by sony or one of the big names in the audio or video
consumer electronics would bring a boost for the sd product line, but
logitech... what a laugh!

But in the end - when sd really has no more ideas what products to
invent - it is very straight forward to sell the bunch and to try
someting new. So I hope that the talents in sd do try something new
after the waiting time for the full payout has been passed.

by the way, in the past i always looked at the bugs in the software
with an "ok it is open source, the guys try hard and it is a small to
be loved company" attitude. From now on i will measure the software
quality with what i do expect from major companies. It will be
interesting to see, if logitech is willing to take full responsibility
for their new product which is based on software that they do not own,
dont understand and even the sd dev team just partly controls! I guess
that the tonality in this forum will change a lot in short time!

[slim] SlimServer 6.5 - no thumbnails?

2006-10-20 Thread jelockwood

A couple of weeks or so ago, I upgraded to SlimServer 6.5 and thought
everything was fine (music played etc.) but today I tried to use the
web-interface to browse my music and discovered I could no longer see
thumbails of the Album covers.

Note: All the music is in Apple Lossless and all has embedded album art
(applied using iTunes by dragging artwork on to each album in turn). In
addition there are folder.jpg and AlbumArtSmall.jpg files in each album
folder.

The thumbails did work in the previous version of SlimServer I had
installed.

If I actually select an album then the larger artwork is displayed for
each album that I tried.

Here is my version info

SlimServer Version: 6.5.0 - 9916 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252
Server IP address: x.x.x.x
Perl Version: 5.8.7 MSWin32-x86-multi-thread
MySQL Version: 5.0.22-community-nt

Here are some examples entries from the debug log

For all we know jackbooted Logitech thugs could be rampaging through
the warehouse, tearing out quality components from the Transporter and
replacing them with surplus preamp stages from leftover $30 multimedia
speakers. Also, Slimserver is being modified to show an RSS feed of
Logitech's press room once every 30 minutes. ;)

However, there is an insult going on here.

The real insult that I see is the insult to the principals in the

Most in this thread have assumed that they, who have known about this

those who have planned this merger for weeks or months.

That, to my eyes, is insulting.

2006-10-20 Thread Bob Bressler

First of all, congrats to the SD team! It is a challenge to find an
exit strategy that preserves the value of the Intellectual Property
that you have created.

In my limited experience in M&A, I have learned that there are dozens
of factors that determine the outcome of an acquisition. The two most
important in my experience are:
1. Developing a plan for the integration of the new company into the
parent. From the channel strategy to shared resources to personnel
policies to reporting structure to success metrics. The more complete
the plan, the better your chances of success. I’ll bet that Logitech
did a reasonable job here.
2. Actually implementing that plan. This is where most acquisitions
fall apart. My humble advice to the SD team is to watch this like a
hawk. Otherwise, as soon as the key-individual period runs out, you’ll
be gone.

Yup... as you'll know, having three cars and one driver... these goods
are very hollow and unsatisfying marks of success. The ownership of
them will not make you happy. All they'll make you do it wonder why you
feel hollow and unfulfilled... plus many everyday people will really
dislike you or think you are pathetic for promenading your wealth
infront of them and thinking it makes you important and superior.
I'm afraid you've rather missed the mark with this one.
I'm sure Sean's sense of self-fulfillment (like Michael Hergers and the
other contributors too) comes mostly (99%) from doing something they
believed in and enjoyed. The rest is just baubles.
Unfortunately out current shallow glossy magazine western society
promotes baubles above the (to me) obviously important things that
bring individuals happiness and fulfillent.
Give me a bicycle, fresh air and open country roads over the
planet-destroying, selfish, short sighted and ego-centric behaviour of
someone who owns three gas guzzling cars any day.
That about sums it up really.

And here we are at the root of it - the source of all the angst. When
that product comes to market for the first time, it will not be from
Logitech/SD! It will be the fruit of a small company with resident
geniuses, and very likely a dedicated community such as this one that
we know and love.
There will be short-term benefits with this deal - a slim device that
will be recognizable as a SB (to those who remember) will penetrate the
mass market, and before you know it, every household will have one (of
one brand or another), and it will be attached to the 'entertainment
center', whatever that's going to look like. But it will be
mass-market: it will not be 'audiophile', it will be 'dumbed-down',
think home-theatre-in-a-box (hmm, why not include an SB4 in a HTIAB?
Adds Internet functionality and home-network media streamingDVDs
are so old-school, but I digress).
Anyway, the corporate beast simply will not have the flexibility or the
focus (serving the masses takes a lot of resources) to remain on the
cutting edge of product development. It's a pretty reliable cycle -
small companies do cutting edge, get bought out when they're ready for
mass-market, and someone else with a vision picks up some of the pieces
and comes up with something nobody had done quite right yet. And what do
you want to bet that many of the folks on this forum will meet again at
some other forum for a SD-like company?? See you there!

Just start up Softsqueeze headless, perhaps by putting a shortcut to it

Easiest way is to download and install the Softsqueeze 3.2.1 Windows

Then just run softsqueezeHeadless.exe.

[slim] Nokia 770 charging cradle?

2006-10-20 Thread Simon Still
Getting away from the Logitech Slim discussion for a moment it's worth remembering some of the advantages of the Slim solution. Finally with 6.5 I'm using the Nokia 770 with the 770 skin and it makes a great remote for Slimserver.  It is really good - sure a scroll wheel and some buttons would be a much better navigation method than a stylus which can be a bit fiddly but it lets you access the full power of a multi-room Squeezebox solution.
My one big gripe is forgetting to charge the thing and finding it with flat batteries when i need to use it - for a device of this type an old school Palm/Pronto style set of contacts and a base for charging would have been really sensible.  Has anyone rigged any sort of solution that means you can put the 770 to bed simply and have it charged when you pick it up without fiddling with cables?

Everything I do in life is not about money.  Should I only read books if someone pays me to do it?  No -- by reading the book, I get enjoyment and better myself.  The same things I can achieve by contributing to an open source project.  And in both cases, someone else benefits monetarily, assuming I paid for the book.
Anyone who feels the way you do is free to charge for all of their software.I don't understand why contributors would complain about this..  But then, it seems like the contributors aren't the ones complaining...

np. fwiw, I'd still go ahead with the transporter. It's a good
product and is certainly branded as Slim Devices for the near future.
The sale of SD may be shocking news, but it's the same people in the
same office that will be dealing with the product for some time to
come. No one can take it away from you and no one can remove firmware
that is on it.

I regard comments like that as a yardstick of -something- that's for
sure. And it's not "success" ;)

There's really no point continuing this debate with you if you can't
understand that anyone could be motivated by something other than
money. I'm happy that you're happy, really I am. Now be so kind as to
accept that OS developers also have the right to do as they please with
their time and talents without being denegrated for it, particularly by
those who (presumably) use and benefit from the very product they
worked so hard to create.

You're probably right, to a certain extent anyway.

There are definitely some who don't care about the badge or cost,
only results. And if the results can be had for fewer dollars, so
much the better. A good example of this is the T-amp, which is
inexpensive, but has gotten very good reviews from what I can tell
from audiophiles.

Poppycock. Complete and utter poppycock. You're implying OS developers
don't get anything out of their efforts if there isn't money attached
to it. That's a bogus claim. But if you don't get it, you don't get

I agree. I suspect the credibility of a successful product is part

I think they've done a good job with improving the Harmony remote

I believe it is due to successful marketing combined with adequate

:-) Ok, well, to some extent I guess I agree with you there. I think
paying more for the cachet of a certain brand name is silly. But if
you pay more for better performance or esthetics, I understand that.
Certainly the esthetics of the Transformer are better than the SB

I think that some version of the 80/20 rule applies here. You can
get 80% of the performance for 20% of the price, but if you want the
last 20% of performance, costs ramp up pretty fast.

I know that's the canonical comparison, but it has a bit of a problem
(IMHO).

Firefox, I believe, still goes through testing cycles. And the number
of people who can actually update the code is somewhat limited, and the
people are vetted. Same was true for Slimserver.

Wikipedia, OTOH, seems to be freely postable by (almost) anyone, with
negligable screening. Which is why they've had some problems with data
defacement - people who muck with the biographies of others, etc.

This isn't an open source argument, exactly, but just pointing out a
flaw at the edges of open-ness.

I haven't tried to use it for a while - I'm not sure if it works with 6.5. I'm

People that are acting like they were "sold out" and won't reap any
benefits from the SD/Logitech deal have got to be kidding.

Did you put up any real capital to get the company off the ground? Did
you pay any of Slim Devices bills when there was a cash flow problem
(every company runs into those times)? Did you risk anything other than
time you scheduled when you wanted?

Until you really put up everything including financial stability and
livelihood and accept the inherant risk in starting a new company you
just have to be kidding or doing drugs to even remotely think you would
be "due" something.

To all the guys at SD, I may be concerned about the future of SD, SB
and everything else but applaud the fact you were able to get a big
gain off your investments. Kudos to free enterprise.

Well, actually, I believe in rewarding people who work for me based on

Face it. We don't know what's going to happen. Logitech is a specific
company, at this specific point in time, with these specific leaders,
subject to these specific market trends and forces. Same for SD.

That combination of factors makes this takeover fairly unique.

To claim that you know, as a certainty, that this is going to be a

[slim] Re: Logitech to acquire Slim Devices!

2006-10-20 Thread konut

I've read the 27 pages(probably 28 by the time I post this) of the
hand-wringing, grousing, congrats, and various 'special interest'
concerns about the Logitech acquisition, and am, for the most part,
amused. I suppose that, because of my age, I see things a bit
differently and prefer to look at this in a larger context. I think its
important to remind, or introduce for the first time, a few concepts and
facts that germane to the discussion.

1. Change is inevitable. Live it, or live with it.

2. SD has, up to this point, introduced products that are a real value
to those of us who enjoy listening to high quality music reproduction.
No one is going to confiscate it or charge you anything more for
continuing to use it. It stands as a testament to the management team
of SD as a benchmark of the way companies should conduct any kind of
business. Sean and company deserve every accolade and monetary benefit
they've been able to garner. If SD were to cease to exist tomorrow,
we'd still enjoy the fruits of their labors. Their contribution to the
enjoyment of music , IMHO, is as great as the CD itself.

3. Call me naive, but the evidence exists that Logitec will let SD
continue to operate as it has until such time that it ceases to grow in
the manor it has in the past. The ball is in SD's court to continue to
innovate and develop products and services that retain old customers
and attract new ones. Why would Logitec mess with this proven track
record? It would be against their shareholders best interest.
Observations that SD is swirling the drain are premature. If Logitech's
objective were to kill SD, then you wouldn't be reading this post.

I look forward to the day, in 5 years, when I'll have a SB6 in my shirt
pocket. A flash based 2 terabyte device that uses QUAC( quantum
universal audio codec) files, controlled by a Harmony fob, in my pants
pocket, and viewable on the Logitech MONacle( media optical nexus),
available in prescription at extra cost, and streams HD audio, and
video if you choose, to any wifi enabled audio, or HT, system within
50ft. ;)))!

What's to stop -you- from doing the same? It's open source. Someone
wants to buy it off you, then sell it to them. They could just as
easily get it for free themselves, so if they're willing to pay you,
they're either stupid or perceive some added value you provide.

Oh, and you could design your own hardware that uses SlimServer and

You're probably right, to a certain extent anyway.

OT: The good thing about B&O (and part of the reason for the cost) is
they will still be able to repair your system 20 years after you
purchased it...apparently. Obviously it's not a 20 year warranty, but
at least they won't tell you to throw it away and start again like most

talk about stuff. That doesn't make it pathetic, it's just human nature.

You've just described the audiophile market :-)

Doesn't really fit with me. Sure, it's the joke, but any company
making audiophile gear had to start somewhere. Any name is made or
broken on the quality of their gear. Calling yourself TacT might be
worth something now, but it wasn't a guarantee until their products
made a mark. Again, we're back to the Slim Devices name having value.
Now Logitech will have the gear to bring value to their name in new
markets as well.

Err

I will have to do some significant re-arranging of my equipment to
accommodate it.

Plus, well, that aircraft aluminum really takes on the cold! It's
chilly today, 6 C, and there's no way I'm putting power on something
that cold until it warms up.

But I have all weekend to play with it, and "forever" after that.

Most ordinary consumers take the Volkswagen, the same way that they'll
taken an iPod and not an equally good alternative. Results actually
don't matter that much to most people, why are B&O and Bose so popular
for example?

Right. And until we know that, if we ever know that, this is all just

God this thread is hard to keep track of :)

None of us know the details of the deal SlimDevices have done with
Logitech, so we don't know how SD will operate in the future.

Will they be dictated to by Logitch board? or will the be a completely
seperate, but wholy owned subsidury?

Everyone writing like they assume the former, but really we have no
idea.
