1Mbit? I must be dreaming... still stuck at 500kb :-(. Would have to do

Does anyone actually have some experience with mp3tunes?

If I understand correctly (always doubtful) the only benefit of the
mp3tunes service is it allows you to listen to your music (in
compressed format) if your home music server is inaccessible (via the
Internet or locally).

Another benefit for lossless users is offsite backup I guess.

Both are great benefits, and I say this as a computer nerd who's been

QUE sheets seem to work well for me with WAV files.

Here's my 0.02.

Advantage of FLAC over WAV = little.

You think.

If you want to save space, you can turn disk compression on if using
Windows (I haven't tried this), although FLAC compression may be a
little more efficient for audio?

Standard compression is almost totally useless for audio and video,
windows compression isn't any better than zip:

90212324 Jan 5 08:19 concerto.flac
204871004 Jan 5 08:19 concerto.wav
176709325 Jan 5 08:20 concerto.zip

So you save a lot of space and bandwidth for streaming. I also prefer to
have my tracks in seperate files, so I hate the cuesheet hack.

Looking at the processes on my PC, I notice flac.exe is running, so I
assume WAV files are being converted to FLAC on the fly before sending
to the Squeezebox. I think you can turn FLAC conversion off for WAV
files if you want.

So you're using flac anyway ;)

Oh, and there's also the fact that you have all of your music backed up
without the hassle of continually burning DVD's or copying Gig's to a
2nd hard disk. So if you schedule the client to synch every night the
your unlikely to lose very much should your music HD pack up.

I love the idea of taking my SB to a party, switching it on and playing
music. If the feature is implemented within Squeezenetwork so tht you
can upload playlists and have them automagically re-pointed to songs on
MP3Tunes, that would make this even better.

The inverter shuts off the 110 when its input voltage drops too much.
The end result in this setup is that nothing turns on while the car is
starting. I expect the inverter might fail eventually, but it's cheap
and easy to replace. I was more concerned with temperature extremes
for the whole setup, but so far it hasn't been a problem.

I thought about doing it that way since I originally planned to mount
the linkstation in the trunk and I didn't want to run 110 or 5 volts
the length of the car. Since it all ended up mounted close together it
was easier to power both from the inverter. It takes so little power
that a small fanless inverter had plenty of juice for both. There's
also a pretty good chance that a DC-DC setup would have allowed engine
noise to come through.

The thing to keep in mind when testing lossless will be use 100/100 on
the Sb volume control and disable replay gain. Then use the receivers
volume control only. The reason is, if your receiver decodes HDCD, it
will be passed through the optical connection. You may have HDCD's and
not even know it, so it will be fun when the light comes on (if the
receiver is equipped)- reason enough in my book! My latest find was the
Beach Boys' Pet Sounds for $6 at a book store.

Everyone says lossless is lossless, so I think windows lossless will
pass a HDCD signal(?). I know FLAC will.

Another matter entirely is DTS or other surround formats, which I know
nothing of. My guess would be that max volume and lossless is a prereq
for this as well, but then I saw an Mp3 surround thread, so who knows?

Yes, you will need EAC (Exact Audio Copy) It looks like a slight pain

consider it the gold standard for windows ripping.

Sorry, I should have been clearer - that's someone else's flickr page,
I'm using the Nokia skin but haven't gotten around to uploading a

The touch-style interface is great mainly as the wii controller works
like yet another remote control, but with a mouse style cursor as well
for easy scrolling and picking from lists.

I'm not sure how it'll work in a crowded room, however, as the wii
remote needs line of sight to the "sensor bar" (which is basically
just two IR LEDs on a stick) to do it's pointing magic. I'll find out
tomorrow (it's my 40th birthday party!) - though I mainly intend to do
playlists, so it won't matter too much if the setup is a fizzer.
Certainly it's a lot of fun for general use - though it forced me to
do a lot of work tracking down album art :)

That's my point. If there is a difference when playing a lossless file,
then it's a bunch of marketing mumbo jumbo clap trap as there is no

available 14 months ago (maybe it was and I didn't know). I like having
the table-top display of the Squeezebox, but I also want a handheld
display when out of the room or too far away from the SB3. I have read
numerous posts on these forums wrt using the Nokia 770, Pocket PC, Sony
PSP, or (most recently) the Nintendo Wii, and I am close to purchasing
something just for my SS needs, but before I do it would be nice to
know that Logitech won't announce a new product one month after I get
something.

Sean, if you see this, any thoughts?

I'm running headless too, but hadn't twigged that the start-up order
issue had actually been resolved. I've removed the dependency
altogether and it seems perfectly happy.

Thanks for the pointer too with saving the cache from the app - I was
trying to work out whether the app and the service share a library. I
guess that answer that one.

I think the only way for the Pioneer to see that the audio coming in is
from MP3s would be via the Ethernet port. Pioneer's site is low on
information about when this "Sound Retriever Digital Sound Processing"

Re: [slim] Re: Gapless mp3 playback es t arrivé!

If I understand correctly (always doubtful) the only benefit of the
mp3tunes service is it allows you to listen to your music (in
compressed format) if your home music server is inaccessible (via the
Internet or locally).

Of if you're invited to a friend's party and want to bring your collection
without shutting down your homeserver. Or share your slimserver with
friends and relatives without worrying about your bandwidth at home.

Another benefit for lossless users is offsite backup I guess.

That's another big plus (IMHO).

2007-01-04 Thread NauticusLX

But SoftSqueeze needs to be installed on any PC from which I want to
access my favorites, right? Most PC's already have Winamp. With this
in mind, it might be easier to create an m3u file containing the urls,
save that online or carry it with me on a floppy or thumb drive, and
load it into Winamp of another PC. Of course the m3u list wouldn't be
dynamically updated when I edit my favorites, but it's an interesting
way to bring my virtual stereo with me wherever I go. Can Winamp be
installed on cell phones or pda's?

[slim] Re: Album year vs track year (is there already an IDv3 tag for this?)

2007-01-04 Thread JJZolx

I don't think this is going to do anything for you with regard to
SlimServer. In the database orginization of SlimServer each album has
a year. But each track also has a year. My guess is that the last
track scanned for the album will dictate the year with which the album
is stamped. It's probably this year that is used when references to
that album are made, such as display and sorting by year

You might try doing a test using the Advanced Search. Since the
Advanced Search finds tracks, it may well use the year of the
individual tracks when searching. That's probably the only place the
track year is used other than in the displayed data on the Song Info
page.

For some reason the database also has a 'years' table. I'm not sure
what it's used for - probably populating Browse by Years - although
since you're browsing albums in that mode it should be simple to pull
distinct years from the albums table.

So when someone ask me about such things I give them in terms I know and

when (as you say going off topic) I use creative means to explain my

I'm a big music fan, from listening to the Motown sounds as a child

[slim] Re: The Ultimate In-Car System

2007-01-04 Thread Beann50

I used the smoked plastic that came with the SB2 with the display
mounted back behind the plastic of the dash kit. Normally, when
someone gets in the car and looks at the dash they just think there is
empty space above the radio. The flash from the camera makes the
electronics of the display more visible than it normally is.

The linkstation is sitting on foam that is glued to the inside of the
glove box. It will slide out and I have a spare power cord for it in
case I want to take it inside to update Slimserver or something. So
far I have just done all the updates over the wireless.

Both the SB2 and the linkstation are powered by an inverter mounted out
of site under the dash. There are some relays and timers wired in so
the setup will come on with the ignition and the linkstation stays on
long enough to do a shutdown afer I turn off the ignition. There is
also a button and switch mounted in the dash. Pressing the button will
start a timer to keep the whole setup on for an hour so it can update
the music over the wireless when I have new songs on the server inside
the house. The switch is a three-way so I can set it to either come on
with the ignition, stay on, or remove all the power.

I did the install one night after work, but didn't really keep track of
how long it took. I had most of what I needed already other than the
SB2 and the linkstation, but I would estimate the cost at:

SB2 $200 (these are getting harder to find now, but you still see them
on ebay sometimes)
linkstation $250 when I bought mine
inverter $40
timers, relays, switches 50-$100 (depending on if you have anything
already)

Apologies for the obscure term, but I don't think anyone was trying to
attack you or be rude. Sorry if I came across that way. That's a pretty
decent novel though, if you're ever bored.

The raisondetre' of the forums is to provide info for those needing
help, by exchanging ideas. Some people are more motivated by the ideal
setup though, and misinformation is an obstacle to being able to
achieve that. If you say something that's not quite right, you will be

And "exchanging ideals/information" isn't exactly promoted when you
change the topic everytime you are asked to back up your statements,
whether they be "facts" or opinions. Peter made the point that your
receiver never sees the stream as mp3, and you chose to turn the
disucssion to the word grok. Slimpy asked you to give details about
your *opinion* on slimserver's web interface, and after briefly saying
it won't edit your tags, you go on some prolonged speech about SS and

You have made a number of claims as facts that are simply not
substantiated. This raises questions about the basis or grounding of
your opinions.

It is better etiquette to label your opinions as such. Many of the
threads that you have been in have been challenged not because of what
you believe, but because you have stated as facts things that are not true.

There are things that are true, such as MP3s not being the same quality
as lossless encoding that folks here know as being both incorrect and
misleading.

I have no interest in creating new ideas that are based on
misconceptions. Discussions of which skin is cooler are not at all the same.

Frankly, I find your attitude to be at best troubling. IMHO, YMMV, etc
You might want to look in the mirror at your postings.

Here's my 0.02.

Advantage of FLAC over WAV = little.

If you want to save space, you can turn disk compression on if using
Windows (I haven't tried this), although FLAC compression may be a
little more efficient for audio?

Looking at the processes on my PC, I notice flac.exe is running, so I
assume WAV files are being converted to FLAC on the fly before sending
to the Squeezebox. I think you can turn FLAC conversion off for WAV
files if you want.

[slim] Altered radio station names

2007-01-04 Thread William Smithers
In Itunes, I accumulated a "Classical Radio" playlist and gave names to
each station such as "WABE (Atlanta)" or "WCLV (Lorain, OH)."

When SlimServer incorporated this playlist, each entry was named as above.

But weeks later, each entry in the SlimServer "Classical Radio" playlist
suddenly had its name changed to its actual file name, e.g.,
"http://www.publicbroadcasting.net/wabe/ppr/wabe.asx";.

I find this cumbersome, hard to know which station is meant, and want to
have each station named as I did it originally.

Can you help me do this?

I set MIP up to run headless, and that seems to have solved any problems
I had about the order of startup. I think you may need a premium key to
run the MIP headless as a server, but it was otherwise totally
painless.

Just follow the instructions at
http://www.musicip.com/mixer/server.jsp

Then set Slimserver to start automatically and use MIP. No ordering,
no dependencies even though I've installed and reinstalled both apps a
couple of times now.

Using the MIP web UI took a bit of getting used to, but I tend to just
open up the application and save the cache before exiting if I need to
make any major changes.

MusicMagic Mixer as it was then) running as a Windows service so that
SS would only start up once MMM was up and running. Ever since I've
been creating the dependency registry entry by hand every time I
upgrade SS. It's a bit of a drag though. I'd export it, but I'm not
sure what else in the registry branch may change (I don't think you can
export just one key).

Surely there's a better way to do this?!

The term world was not meant literlly, just not in common use in my
world. Is that better Pete. This is the first forum that I have been
on that people are so defensive. So much for freedom of speech. I've
been challenge on several posting and I have yet to return the attitude
in which has been used toward me. I thought the purpose of a forum was
to exchange information, not look to see if we can attack someone for

There's a REPEAT button on the remote.

In the web interface it should be in upper right pane and look
something like 'Repeat: Off | One | All'.

They do that here in Oregon, too: which is why I usually ship expensive
stuff to work. A bit easier to track and I don't have to chase UPS
around. (Annoyingly, the UPS office is reasonably close to work... but
if I miss a delivery at home, I have to go home, get the yellow "we
missed you!" card, drive to UPS... and hope the driver got in and
unloaded so I can pick it up...)

UPS and FedEx do that too. They won't deliver $5 worth of electronic

the web base SS is slow and buggy, and Im not the first to say this.
How many post in here are related to the performance of the SS web
interface. Maybe I haven't found it, but I did not see where I can
edit tags either. Once I got mine working correctly, Im scared to make
any adjustment or use the web SS to make playlist. In other server
software/ Music programs all you do is drag and drop to make playlist
along with the ability to edit tags.

Now I can understand the thought/feeling of Slim Devices purest
regarding the daily changes/upgrades to the SS. But I would be hard
press to recommed this item to a novice computer person. This product
is first class once you get it to work properly, but the general public
values ease of setup along with product performace. If I would have
never use the SS with the softsqueeze and had the same smooth setup
with the actual SB3, I would have nothing but pure praise for this
product and would be spreading the word to my friends.

All of us have friends or you are that friend that others look to for
computer/audio advice and based on your/their opinon you make choices
on products you buy. And nothing is worse than hearing back from
someone that trusted your knowledge to only be frustated and down right
mad due to unsatisfactory performace.

Many people like to have top of the line gear or close to it, but
never took the time to stay informed on whats what. And are at the
mercy of T.V. ads and less than fully knowledgable sales people. If you
take noticed after the holidays as you visit you local Malls, what is
the longest line? the returns line. Why? some items just broke, but
the number one reason is that the item did not preform as stated, and
thats not always the comsumers fault. Many times the gear was not
compatible with the gear they already have or the new gear is beyond
the skills/knownledge of the buyer.

I've read post on here where a person has brought a SB and does not
have broadband, and asking a question on how to set his SB up with
dialup. Now you must ask yourself how did this person learn of this
product and not know you need broadband to connect to the
internet/Squeeze network.

I'm not here to put down this product,(mine works great) but I have to
look at the average joe out there and see what they would go through
with this product.

That's really cool! Since the Wii has Opera, it's not a big surprise
that Nokia770 skin works well, since I designed that for the Nokia 770
device, which also uses Opera.

Your Flickr pic is of the Touch skin, and I can tell by looking at it
that it's the old version of Touch...just an FYI, if you upgrade to a
newer version of Slimserver you will see Touch look nearly exactly like
Nokia770, because the old Touch went away about 6 months ago in favor of
a new Touch that inherits most (but not all) of its elements from
Nokia770.

Very cool to see though...this looks far more usable than the lengths
people are going to using a PSP as a slim controller.

cheers,

The stream http://wnycam2.streamguys.com/

plays properly on my computer (winamp) but thru my SB3 it breaks up.
It sounds like pieces of the audio are being skipped - but not with

skipping packets when the buffer was full.

Also - is there any debug info that would help. As I understand it,
all this is happening in my SB3.

[slim] Re: scanner.exe never stops

2007-01-04 Thread Siduhe

Are you using Itunes integration, or Lazy Search or the Custom Browse
plugin (where some people have reported similar issues) ? If you are
using any of these, try disabling them, and then kill slimserver and
start it back up again. If it works, without the plugin, post back and
someone will probably be able to help you get the plugin working again
too.

If you still experience the same problems, couple of things you could
try.

First, kill Slimserver and delete the cache file. Then start up
Slimserver and let it build a new library - if you experience the same
problem, that will rule out a database corruption.

Do you have any shortcuts in your library or playlists ? If so, I
would check that none of the shortcuts are recursive or the playlists
refer to files which no longer exist - this might send Slimserver into
a kind of loop which could account for what you are seeing

If you still experience the same problem, have you tried 6.5.1 (the
latest nightly version of Slimsever) ? There are a whole load of
small, safe bug fixes in this version which is a big improvement over
6.5.0.

That's about the case. On local content, slimserver re-syncs at the
beginning of each new track. An internet radio stream is effectively
one long track, long enough for the players to drift out of sync. The
only way to get them back in sync (at least at the present time) is by
faking a new track, like your manual sync-off/sync-on intervention
does.

2007-01-04 Thread Jetlag

I am running both a Transporter and a SB3 off of an Infrant NV which I
upgraded to 1GB RAM. During the day I listen to Radioio a lot, but
after a period of play my players lose sync. The longer they are on
the worse the sync seems to become. I've tried syncing the TP with the
SB3 and vice versa with the same result. I do pay for the upgraded
commercial free Radioio.

I can only seem to regain sync by stopping play, swapping the sync
option back an forth then resuming.

Any ideas? Does sync only work with local content and not internet
radio?

Thanks!

Re: [slim] The Ultimate In-Car System

2007-01-04 Thread Peter

The following story caught my eye
http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/01/03/autonet/index.php as it
describes a forthcoming system for enabling wireless broadband access
in your car via a 3G link to the internet. I can imagine a set-up
involving the internals of a squeezebox mounted in the dash and
streaming music from my home server via SSH. No more making mp3 copies
of flacs to transfer to the iPod, just full access to my entire library,
playlists, etc at all times.

For me the ultimate in-car system is just a radio head unit with the
(free) Rockbox software built in and a USB connector that I can connect
arbitrary portable disks to. It's not a huge problem to hook up an
external disk to my PC once in a while and sync it with my library.

Oh, and for the SD guys, a simple thin LCD display with some control
buttons (play/pause, next, prev, shuffle, up, down, left, right) with a
USB connector, line out to an existing radio would be just perfect too.
As I said the software is free, so it shouldn't be that hard to make it
work.

[slim] Re: Squeezebox mixed with other servers

2007-01-04 Thread bluesdoc

thanks for your reply. I don;t doubt the SB will sound better, but its
complicated. I still need the speaker control feature of Itunes. Plus I
have AE already in areas where the SQ is not likely to be appreciated
and hate to replace them all simultaneously. And the box itself will be
hidden away in closets, etc. I am really wanting to integrate the
different types of servers (including the USB-DAC in the main listening
space) so they can be run by one software program and have the sound
synchronized. So far I can do that fine without SBI just hate to be
missing out on all the SB fun.

[slim] Re: Windows XP: Starting Slimserver as another user?

2007-01-04 Thread lemmy999

Thanks for your help. I gave full priveleges to the Cache folder and
the slimserver.pref but that didn't work. I then went up one directory
and give full priveleges to the entire "Server" folder and it started.
So it must have needed priveleges to a few more folders or files. Does
anyone know which ones are needed?

[slim] Why, Oh Why?

2007-01-04 Thread steve4586

Do these darn courier companies assume we will be home between 09:00 and
17:00 to receive a parcel?

I could see it coming, leaving the West Coast, getting to Philly.

The excitement mounts.

Flying to East Midlands Airport, down to Cardiff

Soon now, very soon.

and then oops no-one at home to receive the package and so back to
Cardiff!

And there I was getting all excited about my Squeezebox arriving!!

Fingers crossed it will arrive tomorrow - but I've cunningly arranged
to have it delivered to the Village Shop.

Well, FLAC is lossless, so sound quality will be identical.

There's only a processing cost incurred (on the server) if you are
down-sampling to MP3 for lower bandwidth streaming. FLAC is natively
decoded on the Squeeze Box.

You reduce your network traffic, since FLAC is streamed directly to
your player in its compressed form (as is WAV). But since FLAC is
compressed that's less KBPS going over your wired or wireless ethernet.
You'll still probably have to down-convert for internet streaming
though.

So, in a nutshell here's what FLAC has over WAV:

1. Losseless codec, sound quality identical to WAV.
2. Reduced file size
3. Reduced network traffic
4. Tagging support

Remember that your tag info and your filename don't have to be the
same. With that said, MusicIP is exactly what I was going to suggest:
it's probably the easiest way to access 'MusicBrainz'
(http://www.musicbrainz.org) for your tags, which is such a vast
improvement over FreeDB that there's no comparison. The coolest thing
about MusicBrainz is that it's user-editable, so if you're a fan and
see something wrong, you have the power to edit it just like a Wiki.

MusicBrainz also offers their own tagger called 'Picard'
(http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/PicardTagger) which, while more difficult
to use than MusicIP, does allow tag-based file naming, and explicitly
allows you to exclude characters, do firstname lastname or lastname,
firstname and that kind of stuff. You can go ahead and rip with EAC
and use FreeBSD or whatever tag and filename information, then let
Picard fix both the tags and the filenames.

So, I use Picard and MusicIP, and on my FreeBSD system I have my files
organized artist/album/track. I have Picard strip out the / for the
filename, so the artist folder is actually named "ACDC" but the tags
are "AC/DC"

If 97% of the PCs were the same your "proven basic model" would indeed
work. There are no drivers you can download during install. You need
the whole server software.
What's the point in distributing software disks if you end up
downloading a newer version of what's on the disk.
It's only a waste of cost and resources.

Would you care to share your detailed view on the web interface? I
think it isn't the first time you rant about it without giving
specifics.
