i've found an easy solution to be 8X8X8 cement block cubes from home depot. they're stackable and 97 cents a pop. head over to a fabric store and buy $2 worth of covering fabric that matches your room. for $10, you end up with surprisingly acceptable-looking stands that are just rock solid. -- stinkpot http://www.stinkpot.org stinkpot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1600 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29921 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The easiest way to tell where you are is the clock when 'off': if it shows seconds you're on SlimServer, if it's just hours and minutes, it's SN (we save lots of bandwidth and CPU cycles by not showing seconds). Note that you can switch to an hh:mm format in SlimServer too, so this only works if you haven't changed the default. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31652 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The Squeezebox doesnt really have an "off". It has: Playing Music, Not playing music, and alternate-screensaver. Pressing the Off button doesnt turn it off: it is still on the network, attached to whatever server it was attached to when you pressed the red button, and displaying whatever that server tells it to display (usually the time, but you may want it displaying RSS feeds or something). That is not "off" in traditional terms, not even "sleeping". -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31652 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If you were thats the cause, because turning the SqueezeBox off doesn't actually disconnect it from the SN, it just put the SqueezeBox in another mode. I believe its still connected to SN since you can choose to show the clock on the display when its off and the clock is read from the server which would be SN in this case. The cause for the message would then be as described in Andy's previous post in this thread. Before anyone gets too excited, this is an idea, not a solution ;) I know there's been work on using a Nokia 770/800 as a remote for Slim Server & Squeezeboxen. And I know there are plug ins to allow the Squeezeboxen to control othe devices. And I've heard suggestion of the idea of using the Nokia as a universal remote, except it lacks an IR emitter. Well, how about if you could use the Nokia to control everything (Squeezebox and other IR-receiving appliances) by having the Squeezeboxen to emit the IR? Thought of this while looking at the Harmony 1000 universal remote, which while having a nice screen, won't let me browse SlimServer music. AndyG, I was absolutely not connected to SN at the time, everything was off, as I state in my initial post. I might add that I keep my PC in hibernation when Im not using it, but the PC didnt come on, nor was it on at the time that too had been off for hours (in hibernation). AND IVE NEVER USED THE SQUEEZEBOX AS AN ALARM, nor have I ever played with the alarm settings. None of the alarms are set. All the assumptions youve made in your posts are dead wrong! I gave you all the facts in the initial post. Snarly, you misread my initial post. See the very first sentence. Nobody went to sleep with the server or anything running. Everything was turned off before retiring for the night there is no uncertainty about this whatsoever. My evening routine is very definite, I dont plop down in bed while things and stuff are still on. And the device is set for a medium brightness anyway. The thing came on at 5:30 am, full brightness, and it wouldnt turn off despite repeated hitting of the red off switch. And this has never happened before, day or night. Like I said, under the circumstances, THIS IS SPOOKY! Marc Sherman: Why do you censor my post? The forums are for both rants and raves. I cant decide which I prefer doing, so I do both. Slimpy, give me your phone number. Id like to call you to wake you in the middle of the night. That is, unless you think that would be annoying. Everybody else: all you geeks out there cant come up with a plausible resolution to this puzzle? Andy, is it possible that stray IR signals can switch something on in the SqueezeBox? I couldnt reproduce the problem with my various remote controls, and it hasnt happened before or since, and I play it a lot, since buying it before Christmas. I do keep the SB remote next to it at night, but when I turn on the SB it goes on half-brightness, as desired, with the usual display. The problem that occurred last night isnt just that it went on by itself, but that there was an error caused by the event of being turned on it wasnt the usual powering up sequence. Most have invested a great deal of time and effort into the product and would never let go, but there are people like me who find the product equally enjoyable and frustrating and are more open minded to change. I sincerely hope this is the kick that gets Slim to rethink a product that has effectively remained static for a number of years. Apart from the transporter, it's been evolutionary improvements and tweaks and not big jumps to outrun competitors. The weak point has always been usability and the geekiness of the product, but Sonos and others have never really shaken the fan base. The entrance of Apple may perhaps spur Slim on to creating something truly a step ahead of the competition and one more suitable for the larger market. jpj, thanks for the tip on the oboe music repository, found at mp3tunes.com.This is truly a convergence of technologies. This is a great time to be alive. Really, this internet thing is so great! With things like the SqueezeBox, Nokia N800, and oboe music repository around, not to mention a broadband wireless connection, all of which have matured quite nicely, I wonder how long it will take before the typical rack stereo system, popularized back in the 70's, will continue to exist - the furniture alone needed to house these systems can be over $1,000. I shudder to think I just bought a new stereo receiver for $300, my other one having died after about 25 years but which I need to record some exclusive content on Sirius which can't be reliably obtained through online sources. [slim] Re: Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox
In short: Slim Devices -never- initiates a connection to your Squeezebox to play or display anything. It isn't even possible to do that for most people (odds are your Squeezebox has a non-routable IP, it must initiate any connection to anything: the wonders of a $30 router). The only servers that a squeezebox cares about: your local server running SlimServer, the Squeezenetwork servers but only if you are actually logged into Squeezenetwork. So you went to sleep logged into Squeezenetwork, they did some maintenance and let connected (again -you- started the connection) clients see a notice as to why it was down. If you were awake listening to music, odds are you would want to know that you'd have to wait a bit for music again. As for "this is the stuff of lawsuits", sure: a million stupid lawsuits are filed every year. -- snarlydwarf snarlydwarf's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1179 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31652 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Night terrors caused by SqueezeBox
Is it too much to expect that when I turn off my SqueezeBox that it will STAY OFF In the middle of the night last night I was very rudely awoken by a bright green light and I cant tell you how annoyed I was when I discovered the cause a message from Slim Devices on the SqueezeBox. Initially I was simply SCARED TO DEATH because its just plain SPOOKY that this happened, and just plain ANNOYING to realize that this could happen. Its a complete violation of my rights and privacy for Slim Devices to come into my house, remotely, in the middle of the night, and to deliberately WAKE ME UP, just to tell me that their damn server is down for maintenance! This is the stuff of lawsuits. For Gods sake, I couldnt even turn it off with the remote! I had to unplug it from the back! Flashing a message to units that are already turned on that the server is down is one thing, but this is ridiculous! A discrete email would have been sufficient, but even that isnt really necessary. But to wake me in the middle of the night! Listen, if I win the lottery dont wake me in the middle of the night to tell me! If my mom dies dont wake me in the middle of the night to tell me! If New York is destroyed by terrorists dont wake me in the middle of the night to tell me! If youre doing maintenance on your equipment dont freakin wake me in the middle of the night to tell me! Did anybody else experience this nightmare last night, or just me? So what am I supposed to do, unplug the thing before I go to bed every night? I cant simply move it because its in a great place, close to the computer and I can see the display from bed, which, until now, had been a GOOOD idea. Maybe...I should return it and get the new Nokia N800 instead, which has the same EXACT form factor, is even a bit smaller, receives internet radio WIRELESSLY, has an alarm clock feature with snooze, let's me surf the web, AND has 2 built in speakers! Yes, I can add and subtract, too. As you might have noticed, I was talking about my inability to get anyone else to by one. Sorry to offend, I was trying to reassure :) The thing about sales is, you need to be solving something. Someone who is happy with their ipod and its dock is lacking a problem to solve. Someone who's not happy with that solution is a potential prospect, but if they have a problem with running a computer full-time, this isn't the right solution for them, unless they're happy with SqueezeNetwork only. As that pool of prospects grows, the "canned Slimserver" product that gets discussed from time to time becomes more important. If I had to predict what's next in the product lineup, I'd certainly look in that direction. I was a little surprised that I couldn't get anyone else interested in one, since my circle of friends and acquaintances includes a lot of engineers and programmers, as well as music lovers. I'm admittedly no salesman, but I would have thought I would have gotten _someone_ else to get one. Only if they have a problem which matches the solution you're offering. Part of this is due to the fact that many of these people perceived the thing as fussy to set up. This seems like the biggest issue to me. If you really want to sell some of these, start with the people in your circle of friends who've bought home automation products. If there aren't any, you might not have the right circle of friends for this product :) And let's face it: lots of the people I'm concerned with do have ipods, so the problem isn't that they don't like computer based audio products. [slim] Server 6.5.0 does not find iTunes library (is this a bug?)
I was using server version 6.5.0 having upgraded from a prior version that was working fine. In particular, changes to iTunes library were being accurately reflected in SlimServer. After the upgrade to 6.5.0, everything seemed fine, but then I realized the server was no longer picking up changes to my iTunes library. This may have been related to the server update or to a subsequent update of iTunes (now running 7.0.2.16). Software is running on Windows XP Pro. Following the instructions on the server setup screens, I had the location of my iTunes library files and other iTunes data empty. The first remediation I tried was "Clear the Library and Rescan Everything". This cleared the library successfully, but appears not to have found any data. I got no error messages (checked the Event Log, nothing there), just a message that the server was scanning the library that was redisplayed as the server window refreshed. But after navigating away to see if there were song or albums, I saw no indication that the refresh was still occurring, and indeed it was not. My SlimServer library was empty. I tried several times again with the same result. I checked the location of the iTunes library file; it was where it has been, which on my computer was "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes". (Note: while this is not the default location of My Music, however it is the registered location of the My Music folder for the user SlimServer is running as). I updated to SlimServer 6.5.1 build 11196 and followed the same procedure (there were suggestions that a bug related to iTunes was fixed in 6.5.1). The new server version did not correct the problem I was having. Then, I explicitly add the location of the iTunes Music Library.xml file, and that seems to have been the change that corrected the problem for me. It seems clear that SlimServer was not finding my iTunes Music Library.xml in the location it was looking. I would have expected an error. I scanned my system; there was only one iTunes Music Library.xml file. On a whim, I tried to *clear* the explicitly set location of iTunes Music Library.xml. A message appeared in the iTunes pane of Server settings saying that the server would now use the file in location: "" (empty). However, after clearing and rescanning, the library WAS found and successfully updated. This suggests that some residual incorrect setting was saved and only through clearing and resetting was the correct location found. I have seen several other posts that seem to suggest problems related to this, but wanted to make sure it is an actual problem prior to posting a bug. -- tharrison tharrison's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4831 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31648 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] 6.5 isn't working for me - where can I find 6.3?
Hi there. I've been using SlimSever for over a year, and all versions prior to 6.5 have worked flawlessly for me. When I first tried to upgrade to 6.5 last September, I had big problems (SlimServer wouldn't open, it wouldn't scan my albums, etc. etc.( I was able to roll back successfully to 6.3, as I still had the 6.3 install file on my hard drive. I tried to upgrade to 6.5 (and 6.5.1) a few days ago and have been having nothing but similar problems. For example, once I installed it and clicked on "Clear Library and Rescan Everything", it took quite awhile to scan, but ultimately it decided that I have zero albums. I'd like to revert back to 6.3, which always worked well for me. Unfortunately, like an idiot, I deleted the install file a few weeks ago when I was doing some house cleaning on my harddrive. I've got so much darned music on the hard drive, that I was running out of room! Does anyone know where I can find the 6.3 install file on the slimdevices website? Because of the big internal buffer the music plays until the end of the track (or an empty buffer - more likely to happen with flac than with mp3). It makes no difference to the SB if its on or off, it keeps asking the server what to do (dim display, show date screensaver, play music, etc.) The loss of control (pause, skip, ...) and an empty display are the first things you'll notice when the connection is lost. some new wlan in the neighborhood? a new dect phone? you could try the "server & network health" to gather more statistics. -- schiegl schiegl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=6654 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31633 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: tagging question
I am having similar problems with a recently purchased Samsung T9 mp3 player. Slimserver is happy with my tagging, however the T9 is very very picky. I am using MP3Tag v2.37a and have been generally happy with it. However, the T9 displays tracks alphabetically (instead of by track #) when using ID3 v2.3 tags written by MP3Tag. Not sure which is to blame, but I'll guess the T9. When using the v2.3 tags written by EAC and lame, then all is okay on the T9. I am surprised how poorly some of these portable mp3 players are implemented. Thanks for the reply.. Your suggestion about removing the v1 or v2 tags worked! I used ID3-TagIt which I remembered is useful when you want to view tag info according to the different versions in the file.. It also has a simple "Remove v2.3" option.. With just the v1, the PMA behaves itself and I don't lose any SlimServer functionality (I store album art using cover.jpg as opposed to tags inside songs..). I will only need to remove v2.3 tags for the "problem" albums on the Archos. Archos seems to support v2.3 but has some bug/feature that I can't pinpoint -- in this case the v1 tags are good enough. -- ngkelly75 ngkelly75's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9588 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31598 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

If I take a look at the "photo of your set-up thread" in the audiophiles forum, I see a lot of TVs in the systems, so I think many of us are potential Apple customers. I think the way to consider this is rather than "I need to get a TV to play my music - bummer" and instead "I can use my TV to play my music - cool". How many people out there fall into which camp? I was dead set against a TV in my music room. Guess what, I have a TV tuner for a laptop now and watch DVDs all the time using my music system - and I still play music. The usuability shortcomings of the Slim software and the small screen of the SB make it my domain only, my family won't use it. That's nice in some ways, but wrong in others. The problem as I see it is that we all (me included) get very definesive about our choices. I defend the SB when my family say it's clunky, rather than admit the truth. It is clunky compared to where the market has gone. Sure it sounds that much better than other systems and the latest iTunes just won't run that well on wireless networks, but if my SB had the same kind of usability as iTunes, I'd be sold forever. Right now, my finger is hovering over the buy button for the AppleTV, which is a shame because I invested a lot of time in my SB (it's modded with new PSU and case). I think we all got complacent about the SB because it sounded so good and perhaps dismissed the other market issues too quickly. It now has a competitor that costs the same for more features and components and is a whole lot slicker. If the AppleTV sounds as good as the SB through my DAC, it's game over for me. -- CardinalFang CardinalFang's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=962 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31507 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It has a digital output, so I would say that plugged into the same DAC as a SB, most of us would be hard pushed to tell the difference. Plus, it is far more convenient to use for most people. Apart from that, I don't hear too many people complaining about the sound quality of their iPods - they are used at HiFi shows for example as music sources. Why would the AppleTV be inferior? It might be, but it's not a safe assumption at this stage. Logitech didn't acquire Slim to let them carry out catering to the technically minded, they'll want to move into the same market that Apple addresses. The AppleTV addresses the larger market far better than Slim or Sonus at this stage. -- CardinalFang CardinalFang's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=962 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31507 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
