Re: [slim] Library Scanning problems

2007-07-02 Thread Michael Herger
Any recommedations on what to do?

Now that you have problems with 6.3, too, you could just update to 6.5.3
and fix the issues on the latest version. If you can't upgrade, uninstall
the existing version first (after backing up the original), reinstall.

Run the scanner after enabling d_scan and d_info in the debugging section
of the slimserver. Post the last few lines of the debug log.

What OS are you running slimserver on?

Does it have execution rights ?
ls -l /etc/init.d/slimserver.init

It should return something like this:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2048 2007-06-30 10:38
/etc/init.d/slimserver.init

The problem is the execution rights if the first part doesn't contain
the 'x', for example:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2048 2007-06-30 10:38
/etc/init.d/slimserver.init

To correct this you will need to run (as root):
chmod +x /etc/init.d/slimserver.init

If you are running slimserver on WinXP you must use the full UNC path

See the Wiki entry for Uniform Naming Convention (UNC):

If one is launched by the server, run as a service, it has different
permissions than being rund by the user in its context. This can result in
different results if some of the files aren't accessible for the user, but
not the system's services.

Currently it's got to be done manually, although it should be quite easy to
make a .bat file that launches softsqueeze, then launches Moose. I'm
about to add a few command-line options in Moose, so I'll see if I can
add one for softsqueeze.

Also, I've seen posts here about the subject
of mass acquisition of missing artwork. Does anyone know of a method
other than Album Art Aggregator, which doesn't work anymore?

Moose can currently lookup the now playing album artwork on amazon. I'm
planning to extend this at some point to run through the whole library. It may
be a few months off yet though, and probably wont automatically write it
back to the server..

In the meantime, check out Pat Farrell's excellent music utils:

Re: [slim] Networking question

2007-07-02 Thread egd

Now that I've had some time I've thought this through and have corrected
the issue without resorting to a single subnet - the key reason I
implemented two to begin with (which I should have mentioned at the
outset) is that the 192.168.168.x subnet provides gigabit connectivity
between all PCs and NAS devices. Changing to a single subnet would
force the 10/100 broadband router into the equation, which, if I'm not
mistaken will adversely impact network performance when copying between
two devices on the subnet etc - from memory gigabit NICS will negotiate
down to the lowest common denominator on the network, effectively
turning everything into a 10/100 network.

The wireless EOP is a Netcomm NP290W. I now have it configured to
allow wireless access to slimserver (looking forward to the N800, in
the meantime my PDA will suffice). If I'm wrong about the single
subnet performance issue I'll happily implement it.

Further thoughts/comments appreciated...

[slim] using http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3

I don't have a SB3 for my garden (well it would have to be super
waterproof) but I wanted to stream.mp3 via a handheld device. Easy ...
well no ..

Everytime I opened up http://localhost:9000/stream.mp3 using a web
browser, I had the option to save or open, but all I ended up doing was
trying to save the entire stream to disk, and not play it back.

I also tried to connect via the URL into Media Centre on my Nokia800,
but no luck.

Hav eI not set someup up correctly? I use Squeezesoft at work and, and
that works a treat (I have lame setup on my server).

First you'll need to open it in a media player. Second make sure you don't
use localhost, but the server's host name or IP address. localhost is a
special name, pointing to the device you're using it itself

I also tried to connect via the URL into Media Centre on my Nokia800,

In the case of the Nokia you'd try to load the slimserver page from the

I have a Nokia E61...and I can stream music from my SlimServer.

What you need for it to work those is some extra software to handle
media streaming - I couldn't get it to work with any of the apps that

written a couple of apps to handle mp3 shoutcast streams, and put the

Thing is, you'll need a phone that runs Symbian S60.

Hope that helps.

No, you cannot purchase iTMS music in Apple Lossles, just their
standard .m4p/.m4a AAC format in a slightly higher bit-rate, and that's
not their entire library from what I understand. Not yet anyway.

But if they do ever sell their music in Apple Lossless (or if you use
this format for some reason), you could transcode to FLAC - or leave it
be as the Squeezebox/Transporter will play Apple Losseless fine.

Cheers!

Enjoying these budget speakers and my Squeezeboxes.

Congrats on getting things hooked up, and thanks for the review on the

[slim] Possible Hard Drive problem?

2007-07-02 Thread norderney

Over the last couple of days I have been experiencing problems ripping
new music files using EAC.

It seems to take much longer than usual to rip my selected music
tracks, and I can hear a lot more hard disk activity than usual, as if
my hard drive is struggling!!!

However, I still have no problem playing music through my SqueezeBox
1.

Are there any utilities that are recommended for checking hard drives,
so I can see if there is a problem or not!!!

I am running with Windows Vista Ultimate, and my hard drive is a 750Gb
drive in a USB2 HDD Enclosure. The 750Gb is only half full and only
contains my music files.

I don't know how Vista handles this, but is it possible that DMA has
been turned off for that drive? I know that XP, if it spots too many
errors, will turn it off withut asking you, and that can really make it
work hard and slow.

Re: [slim] Library Scanning problems

2007-07-02 Thread Zten

So Anoop at tech support hotline was able to help me. I just deleted the
old Slimserver(s) I had and reinstalled 6.5.3. Then I had the same
problem== Once Slimserver starts running, my CPU would whirl off into
space 100% consumed and my computer would get EXTREMELY slow. Stopping
slimserver, then all would be fine. So Anoop theorized my McAfee
Internet Security Suite was the problem. I had McAfee stuff all turned
OFF, but he said that really is not good enough. You have to uninstall
it all and see if that is the problem So I simply uninstalled just the
Firewall first(I still have VirusScan and Privacy Service) and now
ITS ALL GOOD. So it was the firewall. Apparantly the Firewall did not
like the newer version of SlimServer... I had no issues like this with
6.3.0.

Anyway. I am going again with latest SlimServer. Now I just need to
figure out how to have my firewall not puke all over slimserver.

FWIW the Sb3 has over voltage protection, so it shouldn't damage the
electronics or burst into flames- but don't try it at home, if
avoidable.

Ben, New 770 via woot owner. Your 770skin made me buy the 770!

I have been struggling to make play.this.gif (and add.gif) in
browsedb.html on lines 134/137 larger. I find it hard to hit the
buttons on the 770 with my finger. Any normal html changes (width=
or height=) dont seem to change the display size of the icon. I
could create a new larger icon, but wanted to try to leave the files
clean and not add new icons.

Thoughts?

Ben can advise re: a more permanent fix but if I'm not using the stylus
I zoom the screen (with the + toggle switch on top). 150-180% gets the

[slim] SSH and Port forwarding on a Mac (help please)

2007-07-02 Thread ed_vh

Hi,

I have set up my mac with the following port forwards in my router
(airport express)

port 80 to 9000
port 3483 to 3483

First question is will the 80 to 9000 work. It seams to make the
interface in a browser much simpler becouse the user just has to type
in my web address rather then adding the :9000 on the end? What I do
not know is if it will mess other things up.

Second question is how do I set up SSH on a mac. I am not a programmer
or a terminal wizz so is there a step by step way to do it or is this
likely to be beyond me?

Thanks for your help.

Re: [slim] Slimserver won't start automatically

Nope, the 2k3 enterprise box is a fresh install on Saturday, nothing
(major, just dns and active directory) but slimserver on there
currently. The XP box is a fresh install with just slimserver, the
other 2k3 box is about a 1yr old install just NOD 32 AV (set to skip
the entire slimserver directory) and general odds and ends.

None of them have any protection systems/software firewalls/etc on
them apart from the old 2k3 box as mentioned.

Correct. The player will expect port 9000, too. But I would suggest _not_
to open these ports on the router, as they open up your installation to
the world. Please read the forums and the wiki about VPN, Hamachi and the
like.

SSH client or server? If you want to use SSH to tunnel the above
protocols, then it's a good start. But you'll only have to forward port 22
on the router. More details in the wiki article.

Re: [slim] Unable to access KFI and other CC urls

2007-07-02 Thread jderbish

Well, I'll answer my own question. I just received this from the KFI
techs:

The problem you are having may be related to the fact that Clear
Channel Radio recently transitioned their Terrestrial Radio streams
over to secured streaming with Akamai. The purpose of secure streaming
is to protect the intellectual property by prohibiting direct linking
to the stream publishing url. These new secured streams will require
token generation and authentication directly through the player.

I apologize...there is not a direct link I can give you.

You don't need to wait, just use your imagination. Switch to the
appropriate skin on slimserver. Take a screenshot and print it at
scale to match the size of the apple display. Now try to imagine
reading the text and touching the hot spots on that small screen.

It may be a cool device, but controlling slimserver with it isn't a
good reason to buy it.

Yes, the iPhone is enjoying somewhat more hype than it may deserve,
although it is high on 'cool factor'. They aren't being released here
in Australia until sometime next year, by which time I suspect the
honeymoon will be over to some degree for a lot of users, although the
die-hard Apple followers will stay romantically attached for longer I
suspect. I recently purchased an 8 Gig Nokia N91, which functions as a
wireless remote via the browser to my SB3 admirably, and is also a
great music player, phone, diary, IM client, 3G phone, etc etc.

Re: [slim] Recommendations for in-ceiling speakers?

2007-07-02 Thread dennisd

Also on a budget, I installed 812C Mitec 8 Speakers from Smarthome in
the bedroom about 6' apart and 3' from the side walls and 5' from the
headboard wall. (I have waterproof 6.5 speakers over the showers and
they don't sound as good but are adequate and supply both stereo
channels.) I am happy. I replaced my large'ish AE EVO floor standing
bedroom speakers and think it was an OK trade. Further though, I used
the Leviton speaker connections to get the wiring out of the ceiling,
down the wall to someplace convenient where I can wire in the amp(s).
(Also Cat 5 for the squeezebox.) I subsequently mounted Chopin Leviton
volume controls next to the bed (Cat5!). If you do a bit of research,
you can find them for nearly half listed price. That gives me a
squeezebox that I can use in the bedroom and 2 bathrooms. (As opposed
to the other 6 squeezeboxes in the rest of the house.)
