What 'doesn't plain work' in the current version of Slimserver (6.5.1)?
There's no compulsion to download nightlies, unless you want the
additional features provided (for free).

I am downloading nightlies to facilitate Jive beta testing, but prior
to that, I've been using Slimserver since I bought my first SB1 and I
haven't encountered any need for 'neverending updates and techie
tweaking'. I've tended just to use the latest official release of SS.
My experience is that once set up, it does just plain work. YMMV.

Re: [slim] Work music setup

2007-11-16 Thread Gibbo

OOPS, small typo, erm, it was meant to say around 700 sq ft.

10 people in 70 sq ft would be a bit of a squeeze. no pun intended.

Looks like the audioengine 2's have just about hit the UK market, they
may prove a bit pricey though as for the size of room i'd guess we'd
need about 2-3 sets.

I like the idea of the SB as we don't really want a computer down in
the lab, we have an office upstairs. even if it is just an old bits and
bobs computer, it just seems like a far better idea to have a SB, much
more user friendly etc.

Its exactly as easy as that! Change the channel to, say, 1. You'll
probably need to restart the devices that are wirelessly connecting to
it, but thats it. Test your SBs to see how its all working (might you
have interference from neighbours with their own WLANs?). If channel 1
isn't reliable try channel 13. Then heat a bowl of water in the
microwave and see if the SB keeps working...

Hi there, this is my first post but i have been a squeezebox owner for a
number of months now (have a couple). I think the system is great and
the forums invaluable but i have found myself asking this question for
quite a bit:

When will we see something new?
I am really excited to expand my system into other rooms but keep
comvincing myself to hold on a bit longer with rumours surrounding the
Jive remote (when is that supposed to be released?) and
squeezeboombox.
Is there any news out there about how long i will have to wait to see
something come out of the Logitech/slimdevices team?

Also, when is slimserver 7 going to be officially released?
Lots of questions!

Re: [slim] Lavry DA 10 Crystal Lock

2007-11-16 Thread slwiser

CrystalLock assumes a signal of 44.1 khz within 10 ppm, while narrow
lets that range out to 100 ppm. Wide lets it go where-ever it will and
lock onto the signal. So if they say the SB3 is operating outside its
range of what it can lock onto then what they are saying is that the
SB3 signal is a little more than 44.11 or less than 44.09 khz. So a
very stable clock is needed for the CrystalLock to lock onto.
CrystalLock can also lock onto 48khz as well but within those
parameters noted. Try narrow first before going to Wide mode.

pre-release version is a *good* thing -- that's how you get the bugs
out. No one is forcing you to use the nightlies. If you don't want to
be a beta tester -- which is exactly what you are choosing to do when
using the nightly versions -- then use 6.5.4 (or earlier) and stick

Multi-CD players are admittedly easier. Personally I really enjoy the
benefits of streaming to multiple SBs around the house (whole house
audio on the cheap), and not waiting for the CDP hardware to grind away
every time you change tracks on a playlist that spans many CDs. YMMV.

My approach to mirroring music directories uses a batch file containing

Nothing is lost, but some cruft will build up on the destination disk.

When I want to clean up the cruft or need space on the destination disk
I first inspect the source contents to ensure that everything looks OK

That's it, this is my breaking point, this is where I draw the line.

I am a huge Led Zep fan but I will NOT be buying this album.

Send a message with your wallets.

Of course the industry would attribute any imperceptible lack of sales
as piracy. Personally I would rather illegally download older
recordings than pay good money for overcompressed garbage anymore.

And it's not going to change. It looks like mastering engineers are
doing this all on their own now, and it'll stay that way:

But while he finds Mothership fatiguingly loud, he admits he would have
upped the volume from Remasters. Why? “Because of fashion. No other
 reason.”

So current ideas of how a record should sound can seep into even the
most loyally archival process. “We tried not to do too much of that,”
says Tony Banks, of Genesis, “but I suppose part of what we’re doing is
making something old acceptable to a contemporary ear. Maybe in 20
years’ time someone else will come in and change it again.”

sigh If he thinks that then he deserves all the 'offensive' comments
in Hoffman's forums.

assumption that Squeezebox must be mysteriously different from any
other s/pdif source in the world.

There is nothing that could happen on the data delivery side of things
that would affect the timing or any other performance characteristics
of the s/pdif output. If Squeezebox can't get data from the server it
will simply output digital silence until more data is available. In
that respect it behaves exactly the same as a CD player would when it
encounters a section of the disc it can't read, or when the user jumps
to the next track.

If _I_ were the one admittedly violating the spec, I certainly would
not be so quick to blame the other device!

If you'd like, you can send both products to me for testing. I suspect
that the mean frequencies of the crystals in each device simply differ
by more than the CrystalLock(tm) circuit allows, and that is something
I can easily measure here. Of course you could also just send your unit
in for a hardware swap, although even if that solves the problem it
would not tell us very much.

I would also invite Lavry to participate in this discussion, except
that I know that on other occasions they have been very cagey about

[slim] Audio Problems - Softsqueeze 3.3 on Mac Leopard OSX 10.5

2007-11-16 Thread hometheatremaster

I've been a Slim Devices user for many years now, owning 2 devices (ver
2 the transporter) and also using versions of Softsqueeze on my
computer.

Since upgrading to Leopard OSX 10.5 on my Mac Pro (dual Quad-core),
I've noticed:

PROBLEM
---
1) Playback using Softsqueeze 3.3 is very poor mostly from the
right-channel.
2) The sound is coming through but is very echo-y and digitally
noisy.

This effect is HIGHLY noticeable, so much so that I can't listen to it
anymore.

MY SYSTEM
---
1) I listen to FLAC files exclusively.

2) Softsqueeze 3.3 (on a Mac Pro running Leopard OSX 10.5) is
connecting to the Slimserver which is running on a local networked
machine, (WinXP) on a Gigabit wired network connection.

3) Softsqueeze GUI is functioning properly and is able to browse,
search for music and initiate playback.

TESTING I'VE DONE
---
1) Thought it may be the speaker OR audio connectors OR audio card in
the Mac. But all other audio playback from other players on this
machine perform properly, without noise. This includes loading the same
FLAC file over the same network to a different client (VLC player on the
Mac), without difficulties.

2) Tried removing and reinstalling the Softsqueeze client, this
resulted in the same audio issue.

3) Tried running the Java-build of Softsqueeze, this resulted in the
same audio issue.

4) Tried removing reinstalling the Slimserver on the WinXP machine
with the latest release build, this resulted in the same audio issue.

5) Ensured that on the Firewall for the Mac (under Leopard) that
Slimserver had the ability to pass through it OK.

6) I've noticed no network lag or issues between my Mac and the Winxp
machine on my network.

In my opinion it seems to be client-based problem with Softsqueeze
(3.3) and Leopard, as it worked when I was using Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger).

After doing some research I've noticed that Leopard OSX 10.5 on the mac
seems to have a new Java runtime built in. Could that be the issue?

QUESTIONS?
---
1) Anyone else have this issue?
2) Anyone have any suggestions /fixes to try?

Thanks for any help you could provide.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox v1, v2 and v3 comparison

2007-11-16 Thread snarlydwarf

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?HardwareComparison

Short answer: for all practical purposes the SB2/3 are the same. They
are both much better than the SB1.

You can, in theory, buy a used SB2 on Ebay, but be careful of 2 things:
1) SB2's have held their value amazingly well, there is not a huge cost
savings in buying used and you don't get the 2yr (!) warranty. 2) A
lot of people sell SB1g's as SB2's be very cautious and make sure
you're really getting an SB2 and not an SB1, there is a large
difference between the two (more memory, more formats, Squeezenetwork

[slim] What to do with CD booklets

2007-11-16 Thread morris_minor

There have posts here with saying how people store their CDs once
they've been ripped. What I'd like to know is how do you store the
booklets - if not packed away with the disc?

I'm still ripping my collection so haven't got to this stage yet, but
there are many discs where I know I'd like to refer to the booklet -
for musician listings on jazz tracks for instance.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

[slim] I can hear text scrolling on the display

2007-11-16 Thread mecouc

I've had an SB3 for ages, and I think it's always done this but I've
never bothered to work out what's going on until today.

I can hear a quiet crackling from the speakers which is clearly caused
by the squeezebox display updating: it's repetitive and in time with
the scrolling speed. When the scrolling stops, so does the noise, and
it continues again when the scrolling does. There are bursts of noise
when I pause and restart music as the display changes.

It's quite quiet and not a killer problem, but it does annoy me a bit,
particularly when playing quiet tracks quietly. I tried moving the SB
away from the amp and that doesn't help.

Oddly, the noises don't get louder as I turn up the volume on the amp
(with music paused). Indeed, when the volume gets to 50% the noises
disappear altogether, though by then there is the beginnings of a
slight background hum from the electronics (in normal listening the
volume knob never goes much past 25% of the way round - maybe that
indicates the amp and speakers are mismatched? Or maybe theyr'e just
loud).

Any suggestions? Thanks..

It's an Arcam alpha 3 amplifier if that makes any difference, with
Monitor Audio speakers with no model name or number visible.

I'm quite suprised by peoples responses tbh.

surely as music lovers none of you are limited to likeing only one
genre? what would be so wrong about working in an environment with
random play music on from a majority policed collection? you could
eliminate anything that you hated, as could other people, i'm sure that
would still leave a vast music collection to have playing.

I like most things other than general chart stuff, ie pop and RnB, oh

Oh and only generally toxic stuff in the fumehood at the moment,

Homeplug signalling is not at all like ethernet, but what's more
significant here that it shares the same power line that also feeds
your other equipment. Interestingly, this subject came up a few weeks
ago and I argued why homeplug would be _unlikely_ to cause audible
problems. But there's a first for everything.

It would be very interesting to find it can in fact be picked up by an
amplifier. We've seen this with wireless, where headphone amps can pick
up 802.11 signals from the air, using the headphone cable as an antenna
- the audio amplifier chip can inadvertently act like a radio.

Re: [slim] The Squeezebox finally made it to Fry's

2007-11-16 Thread radish

This has been discussed quite a bit, but in summary (SB3 vs M1001):

Yes, the DAC is much better quality in the SB3. It also doesn't
resample everything to 48kHz like the Roku.
Roku screen is 280x16, SB3 is 320x32.
Roku RAM is 16mb, SB3 is 64MB (more memory == less skipping)
Roku only does 802.11b, SB3 does b/g.
SB3 can act as a wireless bridge, Roku can't.
Roku THD: -90dB, SB3: -93.5dB
Roku SNR: 96dB, SB3: 100dB
I don't think Roku players can be sync'd.
Roku supports Slimserver very poorly, otherwise you're stuck with WMC
which is MUCH less useful. For me, slimserver is key.

[slim] Future - no future!?

2007-11-16 Thread sd2100

Does sb3 has a future?
I'm not sure.I think the problem with the sb3 is, that it doesn't know
what it is! Is it a geek device or a life-stile product. The problem
(as far as I see it) has become more obvious when logitech decided to
ditch the white and silver versions (which by the way looked like a
million).

Sb3 has the looks and feel of a realy nice life-stile product. So why
isn't it sold in a large variety of colours? Is Logitech afraid that
the will loose the geek community (many colours means it isn't
serious enough)? A record player company like Project
(http://www.project-audio.com/) can sell their entry level turntable
Debut III in 8 different colours. It doesn't cost the world but would
win a lot of female customers.
Sb3 will loose the battle against Sonos (and Roku/Noxon) if Logitech
doesn't act up.

The Transporter does not have the same problem. It is a high end/hifi
product and is sold in the to classic colours silver and black.

But what about distribution? Will it find it's customer? Sonos is sold
through a specialist Hifi chain! The Transporter is sold (in Denmark)
primarely through small internet based stores or IT-hardvare stores.
Why isn't it sold next to a Rotel, Densen or Primare amp? Or even
better next to an active ATC, Meridian etc. speaker?
Maybe there is something rotten in Denmark :-)?

you can either split the RCA out with Y adapters, use the RCA and

Edit: in re-reading, you'd need 2 amps or powered speakers with my

Ugh...Not even sure why I'm bothering to chime in, but I guess timing is

white tube with dock in the middle. This would be perfect if it was a
squeezebox instead of an ipod dock.

Re: [slim] Cue Sheet Problems

2007-11-16 Thread miklorsmith

I'm not a computer programmer, I looked at the metaflac info on the flac
website. I'm sure it's very helpful to the technical folks but not me.

Even if I could figure it out I doubt I'd want to go back through the
1,000 albums I have ripped on my drive.

For whatever reason, now even the 6.3.1 build that has worked in the
past doesn't work.

Super lame.

Re: [slim] Portable squeezebox with built in speakers?

2007-11-16 Thread SuperQ

I have an SB3 as a bedroom music system/alarm clock. I use a T-Amp and
a pair of nice paradigm monitors mounted on the wall out of the way. I
think it's much cleaner and sounds better to have the speakers elsewhere
in the room. Perfect stereo imaging when I'm on the bed relaxing in the
morning before getting up.

The boombox idea has been hashed over and over.. Maybe I'll pick up
another T-Amp and build myself one.. or find and old 80's boombox and
mod it up a bunch.

Re: [slim] Future - no future!?

2007-11-16 Thread Peter

I'd like an invisible one.

regards,
Peter

My wife looked at the first SB...a kludgey black and silver model, gave
a puzzled look, listened to the sound, and was off and running creating
play lists using SlimServer, loading up Squeezenetwork, and syncing
between players. She doesn't care what color it is. She is listening
 to the music.

Your wife doesn't care what colour (note the colonial spelling) it is?
Hats off to you my friend, you have a gem of a wife there. And by
the way I thought the black and silver model was their best styling
effort...just my opinion.

I've never seen an all-black one in real life, but I think I agree. The
SD must've mistakenly thought the demand for a black face plate meant
everybody wanted one. Dropping the white one makes sense to me, but I
think the black/silver one just looked better.
