[slim] Napster in the "rest" of Europe

2009-03-03 Thread finnbrodersen

Hi

As I understand it Napster music service for SqueezeBox is avaiable in
Germany.

Any ideas if this will be expanded for the "rest" of Europe ?

I tried, and they are remarkably clean. What happens (consistently, as
in every time I rip a CD, even if I type in the tags myself) is I rip a
cd, and when I click on the artist, the album shows up twice. Clicking
on one of them will have all the tracks, but clicking the other will
have just a few. If I just want to play an album, it is a crap shoot
which is the whole album, and which is a random assortment of SC's
favorites, so I have to drill down an extra level to figure this out.
If the SC interface were not web based, this might not be an issue.

I've been through this before with no luck. Here's an example of the
artwork issue: http://www.ecp.cc/images/dannii.jpg

Yeah, well, there aren't a lot of options out there. I keep trying
things, not liking them, and trying other things. I then retry the SB
now and again and wish I liked it better. Best solution at this point
seems to be that my DAC has 4 inputs (toslink, usb, bnc, rca) and so
for some tasks I use the SB, for others I plug in a laptop, for others
I connect a cd player, and I may add an airport express to the mix to
fill in the holes.

2009-03-03 Thread BlueScreenJunky

How did you connect your Squeezebox ? On the Squeezeboxclassic you need
to use a crossover RJ45 cable, not a straight (regular) one.
Also, could you try to describe exactly what's happening : How do you
configure the Squeezebox ? What appears on the screen ? Is
Squeezecenter working OK on the PC (can you browse your collection ?)
etc.

PC : A router does make things simpler, but you shouldn't need one.

He is using a cross-over cable. :)

I've poked around the Wiki page listing all SB articles but I can't
find the one related to his setup to refer him too. I'm guessing it's
just a matter of Wiki article title wording? Direct connect? Ad-hoc?

Couple other ideas, but not quite SC functionality:
- Get a car head unit with USB input in the rear of the unit, buy a
portable USB hard drive, put your entire MP3 collection on it, hide the
hard drive in the dash. It's not SC but it works quite well. I have a
160 gb hard drive with my entire music collection on it, discretely
tucked up under my dash for easy access (adding music).

- For Internet Radio listening there is the Slacker portable units.
You dl your preselected Slacker stations onto the unit and play through
your car stereo. I do not use this and I have not heard the best
reviews regarding the performance of these portable players, but it's a
neat concept.

Re: [slim] General Dissatisfaction

2009-03-03 Thread NeilT

I don't know if you've already tried this but, one thing that helped me
when I had a similar problem was to select a whole album in MP3Tag and
look at details in the left hand panel.
Anything that shows has different values for that field.
Obviously that's OK for title + track, but it should be the same for
Artist, album etc. Also check the album art is the same. I had problems
in my library with album art that looked identical, but wasn't and with
tags containing extra spaces or typos. If the tags don't match then
Squeezecenter thinks it's a different album - after all we're talking
computers here, not common sense!

You should set the DNS address of your desktop to the address of your
router.

IMHO in most cases the router gets the address(es) of internet DNS
server(s) when it establishes a connection to the internet/your
internet provider. This way it is able to translate names to IP
addresses. In your LAN, the router acts as a local DNS to translate the
names of your LAN devices to (local) IP addresses, so your LAN devices
can talk with each other. If the router cannot find a name in your LAN
(i.e. you typed a www address into the address line of your web
browser), it asks the internet DNS server to translate this name to an
IP address. In short: The DNS of your router is needed on the one hand
to allow your local devices to find each other and on the other hand to
let you find other systems in the internet. So IMHO it is reasonable to
set the DNS server address of your local devices to the address of your
router.

Re: [slim] Squeezebox radio for a car?

2009-03-03 Thread Moonbase

When Solid State Discs become cheaper (still), having a little
Atom-based SC and a Duet combo in the car might become an interesting
option. (Shock-proof) Or maybe just SC+SqueezeSlave+SBC and play from
the li'l Atom PC to the car stereo.

The PC could even roam for access points, in order to get SN.
I’ve seen "open" (or cheap) access points on camping sites...

Syncing the music between the "home" SC and the "car" SC could then be
done via WLAN and rsync while the car was parked in front of your
house.

Eventually, someone might even come up with a unit that fits into the
car stereo opening and has a nice (aka SB3) display...

I cannot help you more than others. The only thing I can say is that
until now every time time I had this kind of problems in the end it was
_my_ mistake: most of the time I did something wrong in the tags (typing
error, etc.).

What's curious is that you have the album twice, where one of the
'copies' is complete. The only times I have seen that is when by
mistake there was a cue sheet in the directory where the music is: that
will result in two 'copies'. I suggest you check for that.

Thanks Luke,

will release a new patch in the next day or two. I've also merged the
daemonize patch.

I know that people have squeezeslave working over the internet. If
you'd like to troubleshoot it a bit let me know. You need to have
these protocols/ports open;

TCP 9000,3483
UDP 3483

Unfortunately, I dont' have my repository available on the internet for
an automated build. I've been investigating options but haven't made a
decision yet. I'll certainly take you up on the offer once everything
is in place.

AlienBBC provides RealAudio support and so is the best SB option to

[slim] Last FM Sweden?

2009-03-03 Thread supmah5

I just bought a Squeezebox Duet, mainly because of the possibility to
listen to Last.FM on my stereo system. But when I installed the product
and wantet do try it out I realized, to my horror, that Last.FM does not
work on Squeezeboxes outside US/UK.

They are working on increasing compability to other countries. Does
anyone know when this is predicted to happen?

Is it legal for the swedish webside market the product as being
compadible with Last.FM when it is not? I even got vouchers in the
product box that encouraged me to start using Last.FM on my new
Squeezebox!

The support wouldn't help me, they had not even heard of Last.FM and
could not give me a phone number or email adress to someone who knows
anything about it.

How would it be different if the UI weren't web-based?

When you drill down to the level of track details, are you getting the
*exact* same file location for the duplicated tracks, or are they
different locations? What format are the files? Most of my tagging
headaches come from the small percentage of MP3 files I have, which can
contain both v1 and v2 ID3 tags. Most software will not reveal when you
have multiple sets of tags. The best for diagnosing this is mp3tag.

Also, do you have playlists? A long time ago (slimserver 6.3 or so)
there was a problem with apparent duplicates because of playlists. I
think that bug has been dead for a long time, but if you have
playlists, try temporarily disabling them and see if the problem
persists.

Would it be this one?

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/NetworkDesign

It would be in the "Adding a Squeezebox" section. You'd need to enable
bridging/ICS and set the IP addresses for the second NIC.

It's not easy, especially for a beginner. A router isn't required but
it does make it a whole lot easier.

Re: [slim] Setting static IP address for Squeezeserver

2009-03-03 Thread Mark Lanctot

Kyle;402600 Wrote:

You say your OS is Windows XP. Go to Start - Settings - Network
Connections (although Network Connections might be in Control Panel) -
(select your network interface) - in the "This connection uses the
following items:" list, scroll down to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)",
double click or highlight and select Properties. On the bottom
section, select the "Use the following DNS server addresses:" radio
button and set the DNS addresses in the list below.

You can add more DNS addresses in the "Advanced - DNS" section. It
will use the DNS servers in the list, going through them in order until
it gets one that works. So a good idea would be to put your router
first, then your local ISP DNS servers, then the OpenDNS servers listed
in this thread.

[slim] Favourites: Alien BBC anomilies

2009-03-03 Thread Labarum

I have just set up SC 7.4 latest nightly on my laptop.

I set up my favourites. Radio 4 Long Wave is fine, but Radio 3 Radio 4
display no control buttons. If I click on the highlighted bar the
fuller screen will open showing the URL and a play button will appear
there. Sometimes pane is sluggish to load, and sometimes there is a
comment about missing artwork (the Alien BBC icon?) The stations will
play, and they play from the remote control hotkeys.

As I said Radio 4 Long Wave is fine. I have no other Alien BBC
favourites.

I wouldn't go that far. Hyperthreading on the Pentium 4 had serious
issues. It worked well on some workloads, and very poorly on others,
giving an overall "meh" level of performance.

Hyperthreading can also have an unfortunate effect. If you're running
two pieces of work, it would slow both down, making the system seem
slow. The total time of doing both would be faster than doing one then
the other, so it was an overall win, but the immediate impact was
negative.

On other architectures, and the Atom is very different from the P4, it
can be quite useful. I don't know enough about how Atom works to say
for certain, but it's more likely useful than it was on the P4.

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-03-03 Thread pippin

To ease the waiting for the next iPeng release, here's a little review
on what it will do and how it will probably look like:

http://penguinlovesmusic.de/2009/03/03/preview-ipeng-goes-squeezenetwork/

It's currently in beta testing and not all of the features/changes
envisioned for it are done but the big architecture changes are through
(I hope).

What will it do? Well, a lot of details, but mainly two things:

*Plugins*
It uses the SqueezePlay menu system so it will be able to support all
plugins that provide menus for the controller (and don't require LUA)

*SqueezeNetwork*
And it will work with SqueezeNetwork, so you can shut down your server
if you like :-)

Have Fun!

Edit: neilcoburn, just saw your post. Well, it's beta and it does still
have bugs. I'd expect end of this months, realistically, a bit sooner,
hopefully.

[slim] Harmony, Receiver, SB3 confusion

2009-03-03 Thread aiken

Hi, everyone. I'm just getting back going with my Squeeze setup after
being too busy to really deal with it for a year or two. As an
original owner of a plain old Squeezebox way back when, I'm really
pleased and impressed at how innovative the company remains, even after
the Logitech acquisition. Kudos!

However, I'm a bit stumped at how to achieve my goals. I'm sure it's
doable, I'm just rusty with this stuff and don't know where to start.
My setup:

- Downstairs: Squeezebox Receiver, connected by TOSLink to an AV
receiver

- Upstairs: SB3, connected by analog to powered speakers

- Remotes: Harmony 890, Harmony wireless extender (currently
downstairs, feeding AV receiver and a Mac Mini running Plex),
Squeezebox Controller, iPhone with iPeng.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to control everything from the Harmony
remote -- at least for volume, mute, pause, play, etc. The problem, I
think, is that the Receiver doesn't accept IR commands. And the
Controller doesn't send IR.

Can any of you clever folk find a way for me to control the AV
receiver's volume, the SB3's volume, and pause/mute/skip SqueezeCenter,
all from one single remote?

Where do I find my ISP DNS addresses? I'm not at home now, but it
seems like they weren't actually displayed it was just an option to

Usually your router automatically grabs them from your ISP. They

Right, Windows conveniently hides them. :-P

If you do want to see them, go to Start - Programs - Accessories -
Command Prompt and type "ipconfig /all".

> Also, where do I found my router DNS?

Just type in the address of your router. It's acting as your DNS
server for all devices in your home you connect to it.

Wait, I thought we were talking about your desktop? If we're talking
about the SB, as soon as you complete network setup, it uses it and
should work. Same thing with the Windows changes here, after you click
OK it should work.

AlienBBC has no code for icon display or handling panes - it is part of
SC. The menu entry for LW is slightly different to the other Live
streams but are marked as playlist so play icons should show up

thing to check is browser cache.

Actually the Controller *does* send IR. It's buried away somewhere in
the Advanced menus, maybe under "Test" or something. At the present
time it is only configured to emulate the SB3's IR remote, but it is
possible to reprogram it to send other codes. Search on these forums,
because recently there was someone who posted the mappings to control
one particular line of amps via the SBC's IR emitter. So you might be
able to get something worked out using the SBC to control everything,
using IR or TCP/IP as needed. But the Harmony would be out of the
picture because it can't control the SBR (I don't know anything about
that Harmony remote, but I'm assuming it is IR only).

There's some sort of bad interaction between SyncOptions and The
Synchronizer, but I haven't tried to debug it. It appears to be
related to the "wait for next track to synchronize" option, so I THINK
it works when SyncOptions just lets SqueezeCenter do it's thing and
merge new players in right away. Seems to work well in 7.3 and later.

I've just tested AlienBBC 2.4-7.3 on Vista with 7.4 25272 and on WebUI
AlienBBC - BNBC Live Streams menu, the +, heart and play icons appeared
on RHS.

I have assumed that the Internet Radio->Alien BBC->BBC Live streams
menu is what you have referred to as "Favorites" as AlienBBC does not
put anything into the top menu Favorites and that you installed
AlienBBC using Extension Downloader and did not modify any files.

Since nobody else has described your problem and I can't reproduce it -
I think it is an installation issue. With Windows some strange caching
effects can happen and I suggest rebooting the PC first as this can
clear odd problem users have had with AlienBBC. If no change, remove
and re-install the AlienBBC plugin and again reboot.

Re: [slim] Harmony, Receiver, SB3 confusion

2009-03-03 Thread cooppw02

No agillis, the SBR doesn't have an IR receiver.

One possible hack to get the SBR responding to the Harmony is to add an
IR receiver to your server, then throw together some scripts to tie
button presses to the Squeezecenter CLI. However, this approach would
generally only work if your server is in some proximity to your SBR.

In your case aiken, why not match the SBR with the powered speakers,
and the SB3 with the A/V receiver? Otherwise, it's probably simplest
to just get another SB3 and sell the SBR if you don't need another
player.

For SyncOptions, I definitely recommend "default" sync rather than
"attempt mid-song sync" if you're running SC 7.3 or newer.

I really need to look at the code & make the two equivalent for SC
7.3+.

Sorry 'bout that,

Re: [slim] Favourites: Alien BBC anomilies

2009-03-03 Thread bpa

OK - I have reproduced what yuou have described - if you use the "heart"
on the AlienBBC Live stream menus - it create an entry in the top level
Favorites.

This is really an SC issue. The Favorites menu item created by SC is a
playlist so you have to click on it before you can play it. This is
partially because you have copied an AlienBBC menu parsing item.

If you want a playable Favorite - save the BBC rtsp url for the station
in question.

Yes, I discovered this the other day after installing the Napster
plugin. It seems that unlike some of the other music services, you can
drill down through every Napster item. I've already started work on
improving the music services screens so you can play Napster items. I
may opt for touch-and-hold (ala iPeng), an extra menu item, or both.

Yeah your right. I thought he was talking about the downstairs setup.

It would be really cool if there was some way to integrate Z-wave with

not sure how the two would integrate.

[slim] Removing "options" from MusicLibrary

2009-03-03 Thread yfni

I would like to keep things as simple as possible although everything is
tagged perfectly I do prefer the folderstructure as it is on the
harddisk.
I have quite an extensive collection of 66k.

I've bought a duet thing. (still in package)

But before I go play I wish to remove the library options like "artist"
"albums" "new music" etc.

I'm sure the option must be there somewhere but I'm not seeing it..

Re: [slim] Harmony, Receiver, SB3 confusion

2009-03-03 Thread aiken

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm glad there wasn't some completely obvious
solution; I'm a little rusty on my AV tech stuff, but not a complete
idiot at least.

I need the SB3 upstairs because it's also my alarm clock (its time
display is nice). It sounds like I've made a tactical error and should
have bought another SB3 for downstairs, but I was trying to be
unobtrusive and use fewer displays and lights.

Some kind of z-wave control would definitely be nice; I've got a Mac
Mini there that could probably do something. I suppose I could also
write a small app that runs on the Mac Mini, receives the SB3 IR codes,
and sends them to the SBR via WiFi. All more work than I was hoping
for; maybe I'm better off just selling the SBR, buying an SB3, and
putting it face down or somewhere behind the stereo cabinet.

Anyways, thanks again for trying to figure a solution!

But why did the problem not exist with Radio 4 Long Wave? You said it

Re: [slim] Harmony, Receiver, SB3 confusion

2009-03-03 Thread cooppw02

Well, I'm 2/3 done with a hack of the type that both you and I are on
the same page about. I worked at it for a little while about a month
ago, and just haven't gotten around to finishing it.

I have a Linux HTPC, a Harmony One remote, and an SBR. I have set up
the Harmony to emulate the SB3 remote. I have set up LIRC to recognize
these SB3 IR codes. I have also written a few simple scripts that are
sent to Squeezecenter and control the SBR. The scripts are as simple
as the following, which is a pause/play toggle.

Code:

#!/bin/bash
  echo '00:04:20:16:1a:65 pause' | nc mythbox 9090 -q 1

The MAC address is the SBR, and mythbox is a box running my
Squeezecenter. The CLI documentation is all that's needed to simple
variations on this.

The only thing I have left to do is to write a config file pointing to
those scripts for LIRC's irw program, and I also need to get irw to
start on boot.

You could do the same thing... LIRC does run on OS X. This isn't
entirely trivial stuff though. IMO, LIRC is a complete PITA to
configure. I guess it's necessarily so, because everyone is trying to
use a different IR receiver, a different remote, and are trying to
control different programs.

Hand-editing would only be necessary if you wanted perfect tags.
Something like Tag&Rename could be used to search-and-replace common
mistags, and that could yield "good enough". But it'll still take some
time and effort, there's no getting around that.

But yes, take comfort in the fact that your server is vastly
overpowered and is the envy of much of the forum. The performance
issues you're seeing are not from lack of muscle, not even close.

What if you hand edited *just one* problem album to see what happens?
Use mp3tag to delete your existing tags for one of the problem albums.
Use alt-T to show and delete even the tags that don't have columns
defined on spreadsheet view. Then hand input the tags, rescan, and see
if it fixes it. If it does, that doesn't necessarily mean you have to
hand input the rest. If your directory and filename structure is good
(ie, consistent) you can delete the tags and then re-create them based
on file and directory names.

I've never had problems with different tag types in FLAC files, but
just in case, check the "Tag" column in mp3tag. If you don't have that
column, you can create it, using this as the value: %_tag_read%[
(%_tag%)]. For FLAC files it should show FLAC (FLAC) and nothing else.

Good luck!

Before I go for an Atom-based system, can anyone tell for sure it would
be able to stream to 2 SB's (no transcoding) -plus- stream to two
(remote) software players, transcoding to 128 kbps MP3? (I plan for a

Worst-case scenario: 2 hardware players running locally, plus two
people listening over the Internet from work.

Re: [slim] Intel Atom: Suitable for transcoding?

2009-03-03 Thread agillis

The Atom chip is amazing. I was interested in you question. So I started
2 mp3 streams to VLC from my VortexBox here running on a single core
Atom. I then fired up my SB3 streaming FLAC of course. Oh and I have an
over night background job running converting about 1000 FLACs to mp3s.
All three players sounded great 0 skip or distortion. You can see a
screen shot of top below. I'm running about 17% CPU load and that's
with only 512MB of RAM. I like to keep this system light to really test
out VortexBox. You can see I swapped 48K of memory but that was when I
fired up all three players at the same time and the CPU was already
busting it's ass transcoding my FLACs. It didn't swap anymore after it
re-adjusted.

So the point of all this is get 1GB of memory and you should be fine.
if you really want to go to town spend a few bucks more for the dual
core Atom.

Taking MusicIP into account, I’ll then go for a Dual-Atom and

I agree that the Time Capsule is hard to get working right...it just
seems flaky. I used to have an old Linksys WRT-54G router and a Iomega
NAS (which isn't even a Mac format) and it worked reliably.

The Time Capsule seems to go to sleep and then SqueezeCenter cannot
even see it (I can tell if I try to change to a new music folder in
SqueezeCenter). The old Iomega didn't ever seem to go to sleep (a bit
noisy but always there when it was needed).

Also it seems to set up two volumes for itself (Time Capsule and for
some reason another called Time Capsule-1). So my SB Duet cannot find
my music and it turns out it is now on the other volume (crazy!).

Anyway, for Squeezebox I would say my Time Capsule is a $500 piece of
Junk.

BTW...Time Capsule also does not support QoS (whatever that is) but it
means that its router blows up a lot when downloading and needs a
reboot. I think that is also why it is so unreliable for SB purposes.

PLUS the wireless range is tooo weak for my house, which isn't that
big, and my old Linksys could do it easily from out in the yard or
wherever.

Re: [slim] General Dissatisfaction

2009-03-03 Thread Mnyb

Cue's have been mentioned, some people apparently like to have a
playlist in the same folder as the album ? and if you not putting in
exceptions for that in SC it gets scanned with the album then you have
two versions of the album.
same with cue's settings>advanced>filetype "Disabled Audio File
Extensions".

If you use cue sheets for every album to make burning disc's easier or
what not, check if have a cue for every flac album ? then you can
disable cue for audio files.
But you can also have one large flac for a whole album and use a cue to
that ? so there can be a conflict of interest here.

I couldn't see what version of SC you are using, or what OS+browser?

1) optional but highly recommended - install 7.4 nightly - this is very
stable and highly functional (on XP anyway)
2) make sure you don't have any playlists or shortcuts/symbolic links
in the "music library" path (and make sure the recycle bin is empty if
using Windows and the path is a drive like "E:\"). Temporarily disable
iTunes and musicip integration if you are using them.
3) reboot PC and do a full "clear and rescan"

Whenever I've had the "duplicates" or "partial duplicates" problem it
has turned out to be caused by one of the items in 2 above.
