Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver

2009-04-06 Thread Kiwi

You are correct in understanding that you need either powered speakers
or an amp between a SBR and passive speakers.

If you search these forums you will see posts about very efficient
digital amplifiers that are as small, or smaller, than a SBR. These
would work well for your application and wouldn't have to be managed as
you would set the volume of the amp when you install it, then control
music volume with the SBC.

There are a few forum posts that ask Slimdevices/Logitech to consider
making a device that has an integrated amp that you can directly attach
passive speakers to but there is no feedback to determine if this is
being considered. Sonos and Cisco/Linksys offer devices that do this so
market place realities may drive them to a decision. I know that I would
be very interest in a SB3 (Classic) with an integrated, highly
efficient, amp.

Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver

2009-04-06 Thread aubuti

For my in-ceiling speakers I use a simple AudioSource AMP 100. It costs
less than US$100 (check Amazon), is powerful enough to drive most
in-ceiling speakers, and is good (but not audiophile) quality. It
doesn't require any management. I just plug the SBR into the Input
2 inputs, turn it on, and set the volume to about the 1 o'clock
position (you'll want to adjust depending on your speakers and desired
volume level). The inputs are auto-sensing, so after 5-10 minutes with
no signal from the SBR the amp goes into standby mode. In standby
mode it still draws around 5w of power, and if that's more than you
want to burn you can simply turn the amp off when you're done, and back
on when you want to listen again.

Alternatively you could get active (ie, powered) in-ceiling speakers
instead of amplifier+passive speakers. One possible complication with
that approach is ensuring that the line-level cable from the SBR to the
speakers is as short as possible and routed in a way that it doesn't
pick up a low frequency hum from nearby electrical wires.

Thanks for the quick replys. I agree building an Amp into the receiver
would make this a no brainer in my purchasing decision. I will check

No obvious, specific advice. Does restarting the station (press ) not

[slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver

2009-04-06 Thread jwagner010

I would like to connect a set of in ceiling speakers or in wall speakers
to a Squeezebox receiver and then use the Squeezebox Controller to
control the music delivered through the speakers. However, I notice
that the Squeezebox receiver requires connection to an AMP or powered
speakers. Seems like I will need to buy and install an AMP and put it
between the speakers and the Receiver. However, this becomes another
device I need to manage and I would just like to use the one controller
in this case the Squeezebox Controller.

Has anyone got suggestions for my setup and keeping things simple (I am
not a big fan of the Boom)?

Re: [slim] SB1 syncing tips?

2009-04-06 Thread strmtrupr2

Hi,

I was wondering what the best and easiest way would be to re-sync my
players. I listen to a lot of Internet radio, and every few days they
get out of sync. Do you know what the best way is to shock them back
into sync again?

So far, I've only changed one setting in attempt to keep them in sync,
and that's the Minimum Synchronization Adjustment (ms), I set it to 10
from 30.

I have 2 receivers, one boom, and one box. Two are wired and two are
wireless.

Thanks for your advice.

How about turning off internal Flac decoding for the SB2+ units?

Thats likely to be the issue for older hardware, it doesn't support
Flac decoding natively. Syncing is supposed to handle this, there are
obviously issues with it though.

Have a look in Bugzilla (http://bugs.slimdevices.com) to see if there
is anything relating to sync in there.

that the 'old' opamps in the 44 do not affect the end sound. ie the 44
 is transparent.

If you can't hear a difference, you might as well have the 44 in the
signal path to keep from having to resort to digital attenuation.

That said, I don't think the 44 is exactly transparent. I did
measurement runs before and after my mods, which also included beefier
PSU caps. The change that had the biggest impact was bypassing the
relay, it induced some noticeable ripple noise. The newer op-amps are a
bit cleaner than the TL071/072, but there are design choices made with
the 44 that can't be helped with mods. The biggest of these is the
poor-ish channel separation especially at higher frequencies. The unit
was designed in the vinyl era, and does exceed the separation you can
get with any cartridge in high frequencies, but with digital sources it
might be a different thing. Whether it is really audible is another
matter, of course.

My 405 has about the same modifications as yours. I think they're nice
little classics...

Don't take Logitech's silence as a sign that things aren't happening.
LT don't announce these things before they're in place (look at the

Re: [slim] SB3 not turning on after extended time unplugged

2009-04-06 Thread JadeMonkee

The power supplies for the SB3s are known to have short lifespans (read:
a little dodgy). I wouldn't be surprised if it was something funky with
the PSU.
And just FYI; the optical light on the SB3 will still turn on even when
there isn't enough power running to the unit. So don't cancel out the
PSU as being a problem just because the little red light is on.
If it happens again, I would consider a new PSU.
The required specs for PSUs have been posted on the forums many times;
just do a search.

[slim] Unable to listen to Live365

2009-04-06 Thread jimzak

Starting today, I am unable to tune into Live365.

The station in question is one of my favorites and has been that way
for several months.

I can hear the station by listening on the Live365 web player.

I logged into my SqueezeNetwork account and checked the login for the
station and logged in again.

I also rebooted my router and the machine on which SqueezeCenter is
installed.

I am getting the following audio message when I attempt to tune in:

8018 Your session is invalid. Please verify that you are logged in
properly and try listening again

I get the same error on my 2 Booms and a Duet.

Any ideas on how to handle this issue?

I have made no changes to my Squeezebox setup recently. Other internet
radio stations play fine.

Setup: Windows Vista SP1 with Squeezecenter 7.3.2, Linksys WRT-54GL
router

Thanks.

You can have folders and subfolders within favorites.

I'm not sure how much you use favorites, but they're pretty much
useless for anything other than radio stations. Who wants to mark a
favorite artist when all you can do with that favorite is play all of
the artist's songs? You can't pull it up then browse into it to find
an album or to pick out a few tracks.

What version of SqueezeCenter do you use? If you don't have any Booms,
you might try SqueezeCenter 7.2. Version 7.3 introduced a new syncing
framework that's great with SB2 and newer, but IIRC some here have said
it's worse with SB1 and Slimp3 players.

I use 7.3.2, and I have one of each of the newer units, Squeezebox3,
duet, and boom, so I can't go back too much farther. I saw a
SqueezeBox1 wired-only on craigslist (for $25 :) ) so I thought I'd add
it to my office as the software clients can't sync reliably either.

Unfortunately about half the time the SB1 starts playing just a little
later and the newer units pause for it to catch up about 5 seconds into
playing. For streaming and podcasts its not an issue, but in normal
playback its very annoying.

I tried playing with the Audio Startup time on the SB1, but I didn't
seem to make a difference, and unfortunately the rest of the players
started behaving unusual (not syncing and starting late) so I undid all
the changes.

7.3.x has been bulletproof with syncing between the SB2+ style hardware
for me.

My understanding was the syncing problems were due to the peculiarities
in the SqueezePlay code the inability of the other software clients to
poll the hardware on PCs to the same extent they can on hardware
clients.

The hardware polling isn't an issue, obviously since it does sync up
unlike the software clients, but I'm trying to figure out why the SB1
is starting late and is there anything I can do to fix it.

Re: [slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag

2009-04-06 Thread WhaleOil

I agree entirely with the sentiments of Teus and Gary above.

When I sit down to listen to a whole album/symphony etc I want the
quiet songs/movements to be quiet and the loud songs/movements to be
loud (at least relatively - I of course use my amplifier's volume
control to set the overall level depending on whether I want to wake up
the neighbours or not!)

This is why at the moment I have to manually switch off SC's Smart Gain
when I want to listen to an album/symphony etc. This is of course
equivalent to having Album gain set to zero. My suggested change was
simply for Smart Gain to do this for me automatically. I can live with
using a different volume on my amp for 'loud' albums and 'quiet' albums
- so don't really need a separate Album gain setting (although if
there was an easy way for me to tag my music with one then I probably
would).

However, I also frequently just set a Random mix going - and for that I
need the Track gain.

Happy to vote for Replay Gain settings to take preference over Apple
Sound Check settings if they are present. I would just like the
default Album Gain setting to be zero if no explicit tag exists rather
than set to equal the Track Gain setting.

I use the SB3 through a Dacmagic DAC which inturn feeds the 44.
I have tried removing the 44 connecting the Dacmagic directly to the

that the 'old' opamps in the 44 do not affect the end sound. ie the 44

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-06 Thread pippin

Probably I should be more specific.
I don't use IRBlaster myself, so I have little experience with this,
but from what I can see, can't you only use volume and power with
IRBlaster?
Or can you configure other commands as well?
And another issue: If you use that approach, the states sent by
IRBlaster have to match the player's states (volume and on/off) so you
can't really control something else without manipulating the player as
well.
Anything else will require either a new hardware - and here I don't see
a big difference to Airremote et al - OR you need a plugin that offers a
separate control layer from the physical player's. The latter is what I
proposed.

iPeng itself can only communicate to the server, after all the
iPod/iPhone doesn't have IR and you can't talk to the player directly,
so a suitable plugin to communicate to is needed.
And when that is done, we can clearly talk UI. I disagree that you can
have a generic approach for all UI tasks, after all, you will see that
most stuff providing good UIs will have a good portion of this stuff
custom coded for specific use cases, look at Airremote or IRedtoch and
you see what I mean. So the way to go is to define what we want to do
and then we can see how it can be implemented in a generic way so that
different plugins that support the use case can support this, but
supporting something through a generic UI without looking at the use
case will only result in yet another menu.

I don't use IRBlaster either but looking at the plugin code I only see
it dealing with the power changes of the squeezebox and volume changes.
Note that it can only use SB2/3 because it depends on the earphone jack
to be there so it can send signals to that output, which will be
converted to IR signals by another device. Because its IR it has no
understanding of the state of the devices it controls so it pretty much
has to start with a clean slate and begin at a power off state. Most of
the code is dealing with the differences of IR codes for devices and
converting SC API's etc into IR codes.

In my own plugin I was able to bypass much of this because I am dealing
only with one companies devices (networked Denon AVP/AVR's). Since I am
using the network protocol and not IR I can not only detect the state
of the device, but I can have the device tell the SB what to do (for
example if you change the volume on the AMP I tell the SB display to
change accordingly). You cannot do that with IR because its one way
only.

I noticed that the two apps mentioned above where still in beta or test
(more than a year). They are trying to be like a Harmony but using the
iTouch interface. Both of them need some sort of networked box to
convert network commands into IR commands. Because they are trying to
be universal its very hard to do.

This gets back to the basic question. If you really want to make
everything simple (and this is my favorite thing about iPeng as Pippin
knows) you want to only have it present you with what you need to play
your music. To me thats finding the right music, setting up the
correct player, turning on the appropriate amplifier (non Boom devices)
and making adjustments to those components as I need (ie
volumn/pausing). And lastly shutting everything down when I am done.

With iPeng today and using either my plugin (special case) or IRBlaster
(more general case) I think this is achievable.

iPeng does what it does best, and these plugins deal with all the
infrastructure underneath. Plus both solutions work with and without
iPeng in case you pick up another remote.

Asking iPeng to be a universal remote is going to make it ugly in my
opinion and I hope if Pippin goes that route he will always make an
iPeng lite as well as a full featured one for those that want it to do
more.

So are there other things that iPeng could do to make the use of SC
more enjoyable? Sure. We all wait anxiously for those features. But I
don't think making it a universal remote is such a feature.

Re: [slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag

I prefer album gain in all cases. To get this with my IPOD, I use mp3tag
and an action to convert soundcheck values to replaygain album gain
values (search mp3tag forum for soundcheck and replaygain). So in the
end, I have replaygain album and track values AND a soundcheck value
that is equal to the album gain. This said, I strongly support the SB
using replaygain values instead of soundcheck values when both exist.
The smartgain option is really nice if it would work properly in the
presence of replaygain and soundcheck.

It's not a good idea. The SB3 has a digital volume control, which will
degrade sound quality when large amounts of attenuation are used.
Additionally, the input on the Quad 405 is very very sensitive, so you
would have to use very large amounts of attenuation.

Just stick with the good old 44, it's not bad - especially if you're
handy enough to do some mods. On mine, the relay is cut out of the
signal path and all opamps have been replaced with Burr-Brown OPA601s.

An I-pod app to make it into a stand alone universal remote sounds like

Re: [slim] iPeng Application 1.0 now on the App Store

2009-04-06 Thread pippin

Chris,

just to relief you, I don't see iPeng as being as a universal
do-anything remote, yet I do want to finally be able to control all
music related commands with it, that's why I will add things like a
power button for a server and a way to switch to the digital inputs on
Transporter from the player interface. The trick is to bury these
features in a way they don't clutter up anything in the plain
interface while still being somewhat simple to reach. The way is to
have items easily or less easily accessible based on the frequency of
use.

I also have been asking for a use-case description because I somewhat
lack an understanding on what a more general approach is good for.
I definitely do NOT understand what Airremote et al are good for if
they use IR as a channel, and this is also why I am always pretty
critical about Multimedia. My experience is that different Media have
very different requirements and that mixing those into one system will
simply give you a bad system. I'm having a bad time with this approach
here in Germany because right now everybody is so obsessed with
convergence and video.

I'll give you an example: I believe an iPod touch is a VERY good remote
for playing music (obviously) because you can access your database, you
can manipulate players and playlists and generally you are flexible to
show a lot of information and have a flexible use case. Plus - and
that's the most important point for me - you can carry it around
because I tend to listen to music everywhere: Kitchen, bathroom, sofa,
bed... It has one drawback, and that is lack of immediate access
because you have to disable the screen saver first.
For TV or video, IMHO, the situation is very different. I don't carry
my TV around a lot and it does have a big screen to give me all the
visual feedback I want. So for a TV, I believe an infrared device is
the better solution. I also don't have the problem that it ends up
being in another room, since I only use it in a line-of-sight area from
the TV screen.

So as much as I (would) hate having 25 remotes around, I believe
merging these two use cases will result in unnecessary compromises on
at least one side and that while even adding additional cost - given
the price of simple IR remotes.

Just my 2cts :-)

Re: [slim] Smart Replay Gain where only one adjustment tag

2009-04-06 Thread Teus de Jong

I'm fervently opposed against only using one value. This always boils
down to a form of track gain. And when you only use track gain, you
help the loudness war by making the volume of each track about the
same. This is one of the reasons I don't use play lists a lot: the
volume leveling would result in a ballad being played too loud and a
track that shouts 'play me loud' not loud enough. It's like listening
to the radio, where the same leveling is applied (albeit in a different
way). And imagine the effect of playing Mahler's 5th symphony with track
gain: what a disaster that would be!

The whole idea of using RG is to automatically adjust for the
difference in loudness used in recordings over the last decades (albums
of the eighties have none or moderate negative album gain; recent albums
generally have album gain in the -7 to -12 dB range). IMO, anyone who
cares about the quality of music should only use it for this purpose
and therefore use album gain (with the exception of parties with
appropriate play lists).

It's a testimony to how much Apple cares about the quality of music
that they only use one value.

(Sorry if this post sounds a bit aggressive, but I feel very strongly
about this.)

[slim] Squeezebox 3 volume control

2009-04-06 Thread Icarus

Hi

I have a Quad 405-2 poweramp, 44 preamp, Dacmagic SB3.
I wish to do away with the 44 preamp. This would mean using the SBs
volume control. Can someone please tell me how this works. Does it use
any form of compression, ie will it degrade the sound at all as this
would defeat the object.

Thanks Icarus

Re: [slim] SB3: a cosmetic question

2009-04-06 Thread Richie

Early SB3s had a problem with the size of the lower front plate which
meant it sprung off after a while. Slim Devices supplied replacement
front plates. I had 3 that needed replacing. They have all been fine
since. There was talk at the time that slackening off the screws
holding the Squeezebox together helped to alleviate the problem
although I never tried this.

I've not had any problems like this with Logitech branded SB3s so I
would suspect someone has taken it apart. The aluminium panel is very
thin and almost impossible to remove without bending or creasing it.

Re: [slim] Ceiling Speakers to Connect to Squeezebox Receiver

2009-04-06 Thread aubuti

Don't limit yourself to auto-sensing amps, especially because many of
the T-class amps, such as the Sonic Impact T amp, are very efficient
and draw very little power even when they are on (less than the
AudioSource does in standby mode).

A few months ago someone posted a link to a site where some company was
selling a SBR that they had modified to include an amp. I can't find the
thread now, but you might want to search for it. Personally I prefer
separate components.

It does work with my Duet. But in stead of placing the Inguz folders
in:
C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server, as stated by Ingux audio.

Place them in:
C:\Program Files\SqueezeCenter\server\HTML\EN\settings.

Works very well. Adjustments on the controller are very tiny. Better
adjust roughly in SqeezeCenter and finetune on the controller.

Good luck!

If you have enough disk space then just leave the log running. It will
compress well (with ZIP or whatever) when you are ready to upload it.
Or, for this case, you could turn it off now and turn it back on when
it happens. That may mean that we don't see the trigger to the problem.
In any case, a snippet of the current log would be good to see now.

[slim] Verizon FIOS remote to control squeezebox

2009-04-06 Thread kevin0964

I have a SB3. I am trying to get my Verizon FIOS TV controller to
control the SB. I programmed the remote to a JVC DVD code and it works
fine when I use the power key and the arrows. However, the number keys
map to the set top box and not to the SB - so I can't use the number
(alpha keys) to skip through the artist lists. Given that I have
around 900 artists, this is an issue. Has anyone else had this problem
or better yet, found a solution for it?

Thanks for taking the time to look at this! Those settings generate an
awful lot of information in a short time, so I can generate more, but
I'm going to run into the limit of what I can upload here.

In this section, right after I unpause and skip the next song my
receiver (00:04:20:16:70:70) starts playing and the Squeezebox1
(00:04:20:05:81:a2) lags and catches up about 4 seconds into the song.
I'm pretty sure I captured it, but I can send more examples in email as
its fairly easy to reproduce if I keep skipping to the next song.

Let me know what's helpful to you and I'll give you as much information
as I can.

Thanks again!

[slim] Squeezebox randomly restarts tracks / moves to next track

2009-04-06 Thread graemefoster

Hi,

I've been experiencing a problem with my Squeezebox recently where half
way through playing a track it will reset to either the beginning of
that track, or the start of the next one. I've tried looking at the log
files but I can't see anything interesting in them. I've also installed
Lame (I also upgraded to the pre-release SqueezeCenter 7.4.0 last
night) and lowered the bit rate to the lowest level but still get the
same issue.

The Squeezebox plays Internet radio over Squeeze Network without
problems (no buffering on most stations).
The Wireless strength is around 80%
I'm running on a Macbook Intel 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB of ram. The
music is on the local hard disk.

Do you have any ideas what might be causing this to happen?

Thanks,

Graeme

If you're looking for a bit better connection to the neighbor's, try a
USB network adapter that has an external (probably dipole) antenna.
They start at around $20 here in the states.
If that doesn't improve things enough, you can build a parabolic
antenna out of cardboard and tinfoil.

market Squeezebox here in Vancouver. Get moving Logitech before sombody
