Been there, done that.

What I was saying is: If it will be availible in 3 weeks, why not tell
us about it so we have something to look forward to.

The Duet was announced about 5 months before it was readily
availible...

I have had very good experiences in Syncing all or as many of my
players as I want for what I have going on in the house at the time. The
last few SC updates have really cleared this area up. IMO it is fixed to
the point that only total number of Sync'd Players reaching a maximum or
running out of bandwidth using wireless or running FLAC without enough
CPU & memory are now the only limits. And these as I said just seem to
be limits, not issues with Syncing as these are limits that would be
reached whether the Players are Sync'd or all playing something
different.

I am running the Sync just as it is. I have not messed with any options
or setting.

The remark in this context refers to the fact that surely there is room
for both systems (and others). Clearly they both have their fans,
detractors, strengths and weaknesses. Obviously I favour SD/LTs
longevity, but I do not hope for the demise of alternative systems nor a
pox on their users. Both can exist in harmony and in fact there are
certain benefits in having multiple solutions on the market. That's not
too hard for -most -folks to see, whether they use Sonos, SB or a

Any other time pictures have shown up of new sqeezeboxes, it turned out
to be true. In the case of the duet, the controller was leaked early
and the player turned out to be a surprise (to me anyway).

The website went down briefly tonight and I thought maybe this is
it...! :-). But no. The time was wrong for it anyway.

Perhaps tomorrow there will be an announcement. If not, I think it is
likely that we will see something in the upcoming 2 weeks. I'm checking
the website regularly (as I'm sure many others are based on the "read
count" on this thread) in anticipation. I'm not in the market for a new
device at the moment, but I'm always curious to see what direction the
squeezebox product line takes. Much like how I follow the iPod product
line even though I haven't bought a new iPod in 3 years.

First off a quick comment on Syncing Squeezeboxes, the issues have been
solved for awhile now and the Sonos Troops are just going to have to
give up on that one. I have had up to 8 Squeezeboxes in perfect Sync.
Like I said, this is a non-issue anymore.

Not sure if I understand it either as I am not a Sonos Fanboy, but one
of the impressions I get is that the definition of a Sonos Zone means it
can stand alone or includes an amp. I have so many definitions for Sonos
"Zone" because to me it depends on how they are trying to "justify" that
Sonos is superior in each case. And after all Squeezebox doesn't need
"Zones" (but you can have them if you want to) which makes it more
versatile to me.

Notice how the Fanboys list number of Zones and not how many or what
type players they have. Are they afraid to list the player types they
have for fear that we will see just how much money they spent?! I could
just as easily go into SC and name my players with Zone Numbers, but
why? Its better to look at iPeng, SC, or the Controller and see
"Transporter" or "Living Room" since I can call a Squeezebox Player or
"Zone" whatever I care to. That way the better half isn't asking, "What
is Zone 5 again?". Before the Flaming starts, I don't know and don't
care if Sonos can name zones or not, just saying the Fanboys like there
Zones. Guess it makes it easier to see at a glance just how many Sonos
units they own as the "Zone" numbers go up.

Lastly, I could have certainly afforded to buy 10 Sonos Zones but my
choice was Squeezebox for several reasons. The Transporter for one. No
track limitation in SC (I'm sure there is one, but I know its way above
16,000 CDs worth of tracks). And so on.

I've done 6.
Works perfectly with mp3 and low bitrate (44.1/16) flac.
AAC and higher bitrate flac causes trouble with more than two since my
server has to transcode then and runs into the limit of it's capacity
(it's a Via C7, 1GHz, so no really fast machine).
Oh, and I only have three devices wired (plus the server, which may be
the more important point).

Perhaps the SB1 would drift if I gave it a really long song, but for

That way the thread can get back to the rumored great spotted

That's pretty impressive Radish! You've answered my question of how
syncing players will hold up over a long time period.

Being impressed with the sync functionality in 7.3.3, I did an
experiment using my setup. I had 2 SBRs, 1 SB3, and 3 Booms synced up
streaming FLAC wirelessly to all players. That's 5 players going at the
same time. I have smart fade enabled and was playing a mix. The fade
transition was seamless.

I ran this for about 15 minutes. The stream kept playing flawlessly as
I removed each player from the sync group. Pretty darn cool!

I can't wait to have a party :-).

What are you using as a player - both on your home PC and on your remote
PC. Are you using something like Softsqueeze on the home PC (rather
than an actual Squeezebox player?) Are you running something like
Softsqueze on the remote computer? If so, you still need to select THAT
player in Squeezecenter. The fact that you can see your home
Squeezecenter I think means you are quite a bit of the way there - but
there may also be additional ports which need to be setup between the
remote computer and the home computer.

iPhone - you look to have a fair few "zones", whats your experiencing
with syncing been ? At present I only sync 2, the Boom & the Duet and
its flawless but wondered what it was like with more players ?

According to Wikipedia and articles based on interviews with executives
of the company, the so-called Osborne Effect is a myth, that is, product
preannouncements were not the cause of the company's demise. See:

Sounds to me like you are logging into the WebUI of the server rather
than streaming the .mp3 to your remote system (using any SW that plays
streaming media from a keyed-in URL).

My knowledge ends there but might get you started?

I will say one thing (or maybe a few more). Dingostrategy is right, it
*-IS-* about the music. Both devices stream music and for me, Squeezebox
does a better job of that for a lot less money (read able to buy more
CDs which again its all about the music after all).

Cheers to Pippin for making a killer iPhone app for Squeezebox! And he
is still making it better each day.

Toward the end of the Sonos Fanboy rants, the faithful even admit that
the Sonos is lacking but blame that on the fact that Sonos is "staying
true" to what it is and not following the market. "Our system has just
been upgraded to a track limit of 65K", big deal, how about no track
limit using SC! That "limit" is basically 5500 CDs which for most is
plenty, but not for everybody. Why have a barrier if one doesn't have
to? Sort of like that 640K memory thing or the year 2000 for PCs.

I still say it comes down to personal choice and how comfortable a
person feels about home networking. And if one doesn't have a home
network, there is something to be said about being able to buy Sonos.
That solution will work with little to no effort and all that is needed
is money.

[slim] No sound remotely?

2009-06-30 Thread carnold311

Ok here is the issue. I just installed Squeezecenter on my home PC
where all of my music is stored. Router ports are all setup yadda
yadda..

I searched all of the forums and did not find anything regarding this
issue.

When I fire up and connect remotely I can see all of the music, and
play but I do not hear any sound, but the sound plays on the Home PC and
not the remote PC.

Is there something I am not understanding here?

well ive had both in the last 4 weeks. as richer sounds sold me more
stuff than i needed. and i could easily get away with a duet. the sonos
was a bit better out of the box. but now ive got this working well. its
just as good. looks micer. and i prefer the remote. i could have had
either. money wasnt the issue. if my duet had been a let down. it would
have gone back and i would have got the right sonos kit.

2009-06-30 Thread autopilot

Sonos fanboys are worse than Apple. Best left well alone unless you are
the kind of person who buys kit, then likes a bit of back slapping and
looking down and all the peasants that are not as clever as you. I have
had a quick browse over at the Sonos forums on occasion, any mention of
Squeezebox products and they are like a pack of wolves. The leader of
the pack is Ro53ben, seasoned Squeezebox hater who wrote a review of the
Duet on Cnet before it was even released. Much of it is utter BS too,
one thing i have seen claimed many many times recently, on various
forums, is that the Sonos system is just a 'open' as Squeezecenter
because it supports Upnp. I dont see many plugins or community
contributed development though ;)

My advice would be to just leave them to it.

This is known as "Static DHCP", and I can confirm that it works quite
well in this situation.
I'm doing this with a Linksys WRT54GL, and Sveasoft firmware, but I

Maybe it's set up so any USB drives plugged in are immediately added to
the database? That wouldn't work too well if, for instance, a friend
drops by and hooks up his 1TB hard drive to play a few songs. So when
he leaves, the database contains 50,000 tracks which are no longer
present?

So maybe SqueezeCenter creates a separate database containing just the
songs on the external drive, and then wipes it after the drive is
removed.

Re: [slim] Driver to stream PC output to Squeezebox?

2009-06-30 Thread bpa

You have not specified an OS.

Linux is straightforward using Pulse.

AFAICT there is no easy solution for OSX.

For Windows the WaveInput plugin uses the real soundcard and copies
output to SC .

To have a virtual soundcard - use Virtual Audio Cable ( VAC
http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.html ) in conjunction with
WaveInput.

On Windows, it is not a simple task to implement a virtual soundcard in
Windows as there a lot of kernel buffering issues that need to be
handled otherwise there would be a number of free VAC apps around.

It's not very common to have a Domain Name Server in a home network
installation. Your provider DNS do not know the local names.

It's possible that your systems support resolving host names by using
Microsoft NetBios protocol, but that's not supported by every system.

Re: [slim] user experience with 7.3.3 = worst

2009-06-30 Thread Declan Moriarty

One problem why dynamic IP Addresses can possibly be difficult using the
SqueezeBox products is that SqueezeBox doesn't use DNS! I have 2 PC's.
Both have different computer names. I refer to them using the names not
the IP Addresses. My firewall uses the name of my 2nd PC NOT its IP
address. The squeezeBox uses the IP Address since it dowsn't appear to
have a DNS entry! There is a player name in SqueezeCenter but this is
only in SqueezeCenter and not the DNS! Considering people have
connectivity issues with Duets/Controllers this seems to be a major
design oversight.

No wonder people are using static IP's - they have no choice!

That is correct, I do not know what SControl is. Is it the same as
SlimControl, or is it the SqueezeController, or something else entirely?
That's why I asked what it was.
Really.

Do we know anymore about this? e.g. will this unit host SqueezeCenter
so we can just plug in large capacity USB HD's and not require a PC to
host SC?

Can anyone verify where the support for higher resolution FLAC came
from? I haven't read that anywhere in this thread.

Thanks.

SlimCD is dead. You can run FreeNAS from RAM too if you like.

[slim] K92FM - Live web streams.....Help

2009-06-30 Thread mpc

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but here goes.

I am trying to find a web stream for the radio station K92FM. I have
this saved on my squeezebox which is fine but I am trying to get it at
work but the radio station website has its own player that gets blocked
at work. I am looking for a web url I can put into windows media player
and stream it that way as opposed to using the stations own built in
player.

Any help would be appreciated.

Michael

you could maybe thread a middle ground, that is leave DHCP on but
reserve certain addresses (via your Router's network page) to the MACs
of your SB devices. I do this on my DG834N (btw: what a piece of of
a router - it went berserk once I upgraded its firmware to
1.02.08/1.02.15 from 1.01.06, fortunately it could be reversed), and it
works quite well.

Re: [slim] New "Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch" spotted !!

2009-06-30 Thread trouty00

There seems to be a lot of negative about this product after everyone
started of so exited.

I for one have just sold my duet controller (i have a touch/ipeng) in
order to fund one of these baby's. I think it will be very nice to have
it in the kitchen, I'm sure there will be plugins wrote for web browser
and photo frame etc,

Most who use the iphone/touch are happy to browse web on it for a short
amount of time and i think this will be the same for this squeezebox.
Its not a replacement obviously but if its a neat small device could be
good for the kitchen.

I thought it was going to be a dockable touch screen which would have
been a nice option but maybe not a requirement.

I think the duet receiver is great, its no frills but suits what most
people need for a multi room system.

I think it will be all about the price tbh.

Tested using Winamp on host computer and played OK with metadata.

When connected to squeezecenter from another network PC although I get
good audio on a Duet receiver, there is no metadata.

Great application.
