I did a complete new install of 7.4.1 and the first 2 complete rescan
did not return any artwork (I could see them when I played a CD). But
then with the third complete rescan artwork was scanned.

Re: [slim] PDA-controller SlimControl 0.95

2009-10-03 Thread Archimago

Not a beta-tester either but installed 0.98 on Xperia X1, Win Mobile 6.5
('final' release), SqueezeCenter 7.4 (2500 albums on).

800x480 looking nice! Impressed by speed of 'Cover Flow' scrolling.
No issue with playback & use in portrait mode.

Problem with switching to landscape mode (kinda works in 0.98 with some
cosmetic issues). When I switch back to portrait, the icons for
close/config/search gets messed up and oriented horizontally outside of
the view area.

Would love to see landscape working and text input thru standard
SIP/keyboard! Great job so far Sebastian!

BTW, I was using iPhone/iPeng until switching back to Windows Mobile
for the flexibility so really glad to see this program available!!!

47 seconds for an internet radio station to start sounding after I had

I have been using the 7.4 nightlies for weeks without andy problem,
those only started with the official release.

If these problems are not sorted quickly untold damage could be done to
the marketability of SBs to those who are not so computer literate.

That only happens if you use SN. I'm still running 7.3.3 on my main
system (and 7.4 on the test server) and none of my controllers (or
Booms) have asked for an update. They would if I switched to SN, but I
don't (as I don't need to). The reality is you do have to upgrade SC to
7.4 if you're using a Radio, and it makes sense to if you regularly
switch between SC and SN (as otherwise you'll be upping and downing the
fw all day). So yes there are people who will have been prompted for an
update, and I assume the majority of them are fine (as I've been running
7.4 fine in test for ages), but it does suck when you're one of the
unlucky ones. It's certainly not everyone though.

Speaking as a 7.4 tester, stuff obviously got through the cracks, we'll
try better next time :)

Do you have a way to check whether you probably have two instances of SC
running?
the command is "ps -ef" on the linux shell.
There should be three entries, one for "squeezecenter-safe", one for SC
itself and one for mysqld (there may be others for mysqld but there
should be only one for SC, you can tell that from the parameters).

This doesn't work from the NowPlaying context menu.
I know it but it's a complete mystery to me, currently investigating.
All other menus seem to work, I suspect it's something to do with some
context on the plugin side not being set correctly or whatever.

It works from browsing your App.

[slim] View by Album should show only one instance of the album...

2009-10-03 Thread jacabo

...seems simple enough, I am at my wits end on how to configure SB
server (7.4) to display this way. Typical example is that Abbey Road
shows up as five seperate albums for every permutation of composer
(Mcarteny-Lennon, Mcarteny-Lennon-Harrison, etc). All Abbey Road songs
are in the same folder, and I am not using Itunes for my libray.

It seemed previous versions of SC were a bit glitchy this way, but its
gotten worse. If someone would please go through all the settings
(and please dont tell me i have to re-tag my music. Seems like if
itunes can figure out how to program a database to group songs by album
we can pull it off here)

any advice welcome

Aha: 'this thread'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=68568) tells me that the
magic incantation for Song Info (well, the context menu that includes
it) is to press-and-hold the centre button (what I called Go above, but
is probably better known as Enter). There's also a Play Next option,
which I suppose counts as a way to move tracks within a playlist, but
not quite as versatile as I was hoping!

This sounds good. I didn't buy a Duet because I thought the Controller
would have far too small fonts! The idea of larger fonts in the
Controller sounds very good! It is a pity that other product
manufacturers (mobile phones hint hint) don't do likewise and increase
font size! The large fonts on the SB3 are what made me buy one.

Good find!
Is animation playback too fast?
I had a lot of experimenting around this because I didn't want it to be
too slow (I don't want people to skip the animation, but of course it
should not be too slow.
My compromise is that the automatic progressing is disabled whenever
you manually go "back" or "next" so that you can decide on your own
speed.

Judging from the number of threads on the issue this seems to be a
general 7.4 problem. I also have a few of these, yet then I always did.
Have you tried experimenting with the

if it only took 8 hours, it would be done on regular intervals. From
putting together manuals for software projects in the past, I can
guarantee it would take many -many- times that. Closer to 80, but thats
still probably an understatement.

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-03 Thread jacabo

took me some fussing (mainly with squeezebox server) to get it running,
but i like the new version -- takes care of many of the nits i had about
1.1.

Question- for some reason albums are showing multiple times, even if
they have the same artist. The controlling factor appears to be the
composer -- for example in the screen shot attached, Abbey Road shows up
5 times because there are 5 different combinations of composers for
different songs (lennon-macarteny;lennon-macarteny-harrison, etc).
its a real hassle, and i dont see how to fix it.When I want to view
my albums, I want to see each album once. Any ideas -- is this your
setting or something in squeezebox server?

thanks

2009-10-03 Thread Ikabob

You know, I think the Squeeze system is awesome technology. I have been
listening to so much fantastic music and it goes from ro to
room...thanks to Logitech's products. I a newbie here and I have been
able to enjoy 7.4 with no problems. True, I use the basics by listening
toany radio stations and some of the music services. I have read a lot
of probls that some people are having and I feel for them. I think that
there are so many variables as to why they are having problems that to
blame them all on Logitech and/or 7.4 is unfair. When you read forums
like this many times only those with complaints chime in and for every
one of them there are hundreds or more that feel like I do and are VERY
pleased and VERY impressed with Logitech and their awesome technology.
The more complaints the more workers for an industry become discouraged.
It is fasionable these days to be negative and complain Sometimes
rudely. I say try to live with the cute little girl and let Logitech be
Logitech and continue to produce awesome products. IMHO

Oh, what a tease! I've just spent ages rummaging in the wiki trying to
find out what this means, with no luck. So how DO you move songs within
the Now Playing playlist in 7.4? Indeed, last time I hit the Go button
in the playlist, instead of being taken to info about the song (as
happened in 7.3 and earlier), it started playing it instead.

Re: [slim] BBC App or iPlayer plugin?

2009-10-03 Thread bpa

The BBC app just gives you the main BBC national stations in WMA formats
i.e. Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3, Radio 4, Radio 4LW, 5Live, 6Music, BBC 7
and World service. These streams will be available without an SBS
running. However some of the URLs seems to be out of date and are not
reliable for UK listeners.

BBCiPlayer needs an SBS running but it provides access all BBC radio
streams National, regional and local and also iPlayer contents which are
7 days programs. By default the audio is streamed in Flash/ AAC format
which is better quality than the WMA. AAC requires transcoding for
older players so for UK listeners (and especially NAS users) - the AAC
format can be disabled so that it will use WMA or MP3 as appropriate and
play natively on the players.

Perhaps a little more reassurance necessary? I don't have any
connection with iPeng other than that I'm an extremely happy user.
(It's transformed my Slimserver/Squeezeserver experience, in fact,
which was previously inducing ever increasing frustration at it's
multiple clunkinesses). My network is exactly the arrangement you
describe and for exactly the same reasons (except that I use aiff and
alac rather than flac). It is, in addition, wired via homeplug
ethernet over mains, so it would have some further excuses to go wrong
- but it doesn't (touch wood). Quite the reverse. The whole
arrangement is superb. Go for it!

Re: [slim] [ANNOUNCE] iPeng 1.2 for iPhone now on the AppStore

2009-10-03 Thread EnochLight

Greetings Pippin!

Fantastic update; love it with 7.4 (despite 7.4's "teething problems").
;-) That said, I found a couple of graphical glitches on mine when the
tutorials kick in. Not a deal breaker for me but thought I'd mention
it.

See the image below. This happened when I hit the "reverse" button at
the bottom of the tutorial when it was playing to see an animation play
over (by the way, you might want to add an iPeng setting to disable
animations and to slow playback down).

I'm on an iPhone 3GS (3.1) and Squeezebox Server 7.4 on Vista 32 bit
SP2. Did a clean install of SB Server and updated my previous version
of iPeng while sync'd to iTunes.

Cheers!

The proof of the pudding is whether she drives down sales of SB

contribution to the public perception of this product line. Hopefully,
someone gathers statistics on the average time to dismiss her when she

The usability of any company's website is the public's first impression

Fair enough. I guess then that's what I'm saying - I don't think it
makes sense for More to be the default, because you're most likely to
want to use one of the items on the shortcut bar. You've put them there
because they're the ones used most often...

Yes, please get rid of it. It's detracts attention from reading about
the products. I saw it yesterday when I was trying to get a co-worker
to buy a squeezebox. His reaction was to almost immediately close the
window to get rid of it and not buy one.

Also, what's up with the stupid "click to launch" image on the product
page? It's a huge waste of a 21kb jpg that fits all the data, but
doesn't let you read it.

The squeezebox product pages used to be great. Now they're covered in
crappy stock photos of people pretending to enjoy things.

[slim] Artwork scan in 7.4

2009-10-03 Thread rickwookie

Since Squeezebox Server is now released and stable (that and the fact
that I just got iPeng 1.2 on my iPhone and is seems to encourage the
upgrade) I thought it was time to upgrade from 7.3.4 on my Ubuntu
Server.

I'm not impressed. It didn't seem to import a single setting from my
old Squeezecenter 7.3.4 installation and so all of my tweaks are lost,
but what's more the new database scan seemed to complete with only a few
of my albums and when I did a new complete scan it got all the albums
(as far as I can tell) but seems to not have scanned any of the artwork.
I have to go into each album in turn from the web UI to get the artwork
to appear.

While my collection is modest by many people's standards, I still don't
fancy clicking through all 402 albums to get the artwork to show. Is
there any way to force an artwork scan? BTW my artwork is stored as
folder.jpg for each album (each album being in its own subfolder).

[slim] BBC App or iPlayer plugin?

No, if you initially start iPeng, the main menu defaults to "More",
that's the expected behavior since that's really the full main menu.
I'm not sure whether "i" needs to be the first item, but iPeng always

I think it's only the more sophisticated users that get to this forum.
The next group would try to use phone support. The largest group will

Sorry, but if I've understood you correctly then this isn't it. I've
gone into MySB and the first item on the bottom toolbar is Favourites.
Interestingly though the MySB main menu also defaults to More, whereas
if I've understood correctly it should be Favourites as that's first in
the shortcuts along the bottom.

Which is why there is so much effort in the SB community put into
running SC/SBS on Network Attached Storage devices. Heck, people are
even running it on intelligent wall warts now!

My NAS consumes about 5w in standby mode, and 18w serving music. That
is about the same as one low energy lightbulb. It means that I can keep
7.3.3 - which works just fine for me.

I think 7.3.3 was the last iteration of software designed specifically
for the Duet / Boom / SB3 / Transporter line. Logitech have moved on
with their product line and good luck to them. But if you don't want to
get dragged along with them, and forced to accept software and firmware
more appropriate to their new touch screen devices, then you will need
to have a server on 24/7 - and for most, that means a NAS.

Were you connected to a SB2 or SB3 that requires you hold down the
brightness button in order to update the firmware?

I have several different devices on my network and found that with the
upgrade to 7.4 if I booted up and connected to one of my SB3's that I
had not yet upgraded the firmware on I would get this message on the SBC
- as if I were standing there looking at it's VFD.

I get some audio anomalies occasionally while playing back on the SBC
with 7.4.No biggie though, especially since it is clear they're
working on this functionality (which is still in beta) --- now I can
listen to Pandora and Rhapsody (one or the other of which didn't work at
all before). It's just a matter of time before playback on the SBC
works well - I'm willing to wait.

One request -- could you add an option to display album artwork on the

[slim] SBS 7.4 apps; several players

2009-10-03 Thread Furry

I've just upgraded to SC/SBS v7.4, and installed the SomaFM, BBC, and
Facebook 'apps'.

I installed these apps to/for/from one of my two SB3s. I also have a
Boom. I opted to have the apps appear on the SB3's main menu.

So, with the Facebook app, I can press right-arrow on the remote to be
presented with the option to 'Share on Facebook'. All good - on that
player.

However, these top-menu options, and the ability to 'Share on Facebook'
don't also appear on my other two players - the other SB3 and the Boom.
Nothing I do from those players will rectify this. They both have latest
firmware installed. If I attempt to install the apps from those other
players, I am told that they are already installed.

Also, when I check the settings page of SBS for the SB3 that these apps
*do* work for, none of the apps (SomaFM, BBC, Facebook) appear on the
top-menu list for that player.

Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else got this
issue?

BTW, I *really* want a radio (with a battery), and possibly a Touch too
- how long will I have to wait, I wonder?

TIA,
Dave.

Re: [slim] Apple Airport Extreme w/ Guest network: problem with accessing SB server with iPeng

2009-10-03 Thread pippin

I'm not familiar with AE, but from what you describe I believe your
"Guest Network" is a demilitarized zone that only has access to the
internet.
You might have to open a port on the router to the outside world to
allow access to teh server (TCP on port 9000).
Maybe Airport has an option to only open a port towards the guest
network.

You would still have to configure your server's IP address manually in
iPeng since the server detection broadcast will certainly not work.

Re: [slim] Upgrade killed my SqueezeBox remote

Caad;465373 Wrote:
> Hi.

I've had a similar problem/s here and trust this is the appropriate
thread.

Upgraded to V7.4 of Squeezebox Server
Update of the SB3 appeared to go fine.

However I seemed to experience multiple issues:

The SB3 screen was blank at most times apart from when it was updating
and a couple of times when it was finding the Squeezebox Server. From
the server UI, it appeared that the SB3 was indeed recognised but the
SB3 screen was blank and I found no way to remedy that.

Reading through a number of threads here gave me the idea that the
remote was somehow playing up as well.
On investigating the server web UI, it would not load the 'Remote'
page.

To cut a long story short, there seemed to be a number of issues and I
suspect the migration to V7.4 didn't go too well. I followed the Wiki
article advice on doing a clean install of V7.4 and this seems to have
fixed the issues, though I need to re-do all the preferences, of course
and I've yet to play any music .. so, we'll see.

I'm hoping this update will also fix the old issue I had.
That is . . when the computer running Squeezebox Server goes to sleep,
the SB3 will finish the current track playing and then just stop.
Perhaps that's another issue and another thread.

Here's the config:

Squeezebox Server: Version: 7.4.0 - r28672 @ Mon Sep 28 17:49:57 PDT

I don't know what a chumby is but if it connects using stream.mp3 then
it will not be possible to sync. Sync only really works for

Thanks PeterW. I suppose if I post enough questions I could become a
valued senior member like pski. I just want the stuff to work without
the need to research the effects of monolithic upgrades on 3 different
products. The better solution is to put individual product update under
user control. This could require changes to the server. It is probably
hard-coded to specific dependencies. And it is better fix the what you
have before upping the ante with new and probably buggy features.

I still don't understand why they say this:

Upgrade to 7.4.0 Required
Required for SqueezeNetwork Users
If you connect your players to SqueezeNetwork at any time, then you
must upgrade to 7.4.

when the firmware is switching all by itself. Apparently the firmware
is pushed from the website when a user has not installed 7.4.

Either I am missing something or the document linked below from which
the above is copied is inaccurate and misleading. 'Must' is different
than 'we recommend'.

This is my number one complaint with the entire system. Yes, its easy to

As for why it won't let you change the setting, that is odd. Have you
tried a factory reset? something might have got "stuck" on the SB3s
software.

If a factory reset doesn't work, try a Xilinx reset.

I think the problem is compounded by attempting three different issues
at the same time:
- upgrading SN to MySB
- upgrading SC7.3 to SBS7.4
- new product introduction of the Radio (requiring the first two)

In a perfect world these should have been done in steps, spreading out
the three step integration over (say) 30 days between each step. But
then I and most of the SB player users are not programmers so we'll
never understand the reasons why this couldn't be done in such a three
step manner. Then add in the corporate big cheeses standing over them
with a baseball bat! :)

Obviously MySB.com and SBS7.4 work with legacy hardware, and SC7.3
works with MySB, all with some hicups of course. So then the question
is "why not a three step integration?". I'd guess it was either planned
as a all-at-once process (not my choice as an amateur looking in from
outside), or the multi-step approach plan got trampled on due to
problems and deadlines. Who knows.

Many thanks - I'm not familiar with Apple stuff (I have none).
But I'd like to try ipeng and this seems the cheapest route?

Very good update!

But I use the SC with volume disabled. So I would like an option to
remove the new nice Volume Buttons in iPeng.

Hi volpone,

If you don't bother ssh'ing to your Pro to rename/delete some file, go
ahead.
Else, there's currently a bug ('14451'

builds that could cause you headaches.

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

iPhone;465527 Wrote:

While this might be true in a technical sense it is not true in the
common world. I guess people that have a setup which allows running on
7.3. maybe even didn't realize (apart from the later logitech-mail) that
there was a 7.4.

All other people that come here (some properly complaining and also
many using the wrong words) were 'forced' to an update.
- their controller asked them to do so and if they didn't it asked them
later again and they didn't know why
- their boom just upgraded automatically when they surfed to a certain
menu
- ...

I don't want to start a discussion now what 'forced' means, but my
interpretation goes like 'as a normal user who doesn't surf the forums
all the time I had no real chance to opt out when my devices started to
develop their own lives. I didn't even know the correct answer, when the
controller surprised me with a question I didn't understand out of the
blue'.

I hope that logitech will take the chance to make a retrospective of
the current update and will analyse what could be done better (and I'm
sure they will - noone wants unhappy customers).
Maybe they are even satisfied ... I mean - in their statistics they see
exactly how many people upgraded - say >10.000 and how many people turn
up in support and forums (say 100). This would be 'just' 1% problematic
cases ?
Of course I don't know the real numbers, but at what number would we
speak of a successfull update (given that 0% is not realistic).

Having said this I want to agree to the first poster. Taking the wrong
language doesn't really help in the current situation.
Logitech for sure won't take back the changes (why should they?)
because this would make even more trouble. The system wasn't designed to
support old and new squeezenetwork in parallel so this currently is just
not an option.

[slim] More gremlins

2009-10-03 Thread Labarum

I wake up this morning and I click up an internet radio station from the
web interface - nothing - the playing counter ticks the second but . .
.silence.

I check my albums, and yes, the FLAC folder will play.

More investigation.

A after minute or more a station which claims to be playing will in the
end spring to life.

Any ideas?

Yes, 7.4 and 130.

[slim] Support for multiple albumart

2009-10-03 Thread Letten

Hi,

Does the software support multiple albumart?

I have used MP3Tag to add "front cover" and "artist" to each track
(WMA) in an album. I have also put a folder.jpg with the front cover in
then folder with the tracks (so that WMP can display it).

But I can't find the "artist" image on my Duet. When I play a track
with multiple covers, I press (+) and then select "Album covers" I can
only see the "front cover" I thought I would be able to scroll through
the different images within the file.

I use: SB server 7.4 on XP

If I'm not mistaken, the " new" 8gb ipod touch is not really a 3rd gen
Ipod Touch, it is a 2nd gen ipod touch. The 3rd gen Ipod Touch only
comes in 32gb and 64gb versions.

But if you are buying the 8gb you should have no problems, since I
myself have a 2nd gen Ipod touch running Ipeng.

Works great with 7.3.1 - I am slow sometimes when things just work. Best

Would it not been better to just say "Initializing" or something

Why this is not been told in the announcements very clear in any
languages in a understandable way. Its not a shame to have not english
as mother language.

If i look through the resources the SB3 is no more listed inside the
FAQ section of the Logitech resourses. I could browse them from the old
Squeezecenter Help link directly.

Anyways after i did have damaged my SB3 (3month old) i packed it to
send to logitech for repair. The display stay black. 7.3 is working very
stable. nothing to concern. Also no problem with the Controler of my
Duet. With 7.4 Logitech go the risk to loose a lot of reputation. If
they force in this way the 7.4. With the Duet it happen the same this
reputation lost in past. No this?
In regular i use the hardware together with PDA Slimcontrol.
The Duet controler is only more for me just for testing. I think for
the moment to force 7.4 as major release and stable is not the best way.
Christmass is time enough to make it ready to be stable.
Is it realy necessary to make 90 % of happy customers NOW to beta
testers for the SB Radio. My idea was to buy one at christmass to put it
inside a stable solution without major bugs. There is no need to make me
as a beta tester until christmass. The best way to demonstrate somehow
stability is to force the developement of the software players. It was
allways my argument in front of friends to decide to buy the hardware
after intensive testing with the software players.
The way is than to buy one SB Modell and use intermediate the software
player as intermediate solution for Multiroom until they buy the next SB
Modell.

I just performed an ubuntu 9.04 apt-get remove --purge and apt-get
install of squeezeboxserver and let it run its initial scan of the
library over (local music). Everything seems to be working fine now!

I guess what I may have done wrong last time was to install extensions
and restart the server, interrupting the initial scan which messed up
the database entries?

Anywho, thanks for the update pippin!
