OK, now I understand what you did :-)
just selecting single players out of a sync group to sync doesn't make
a difference, you always sync with the master.

Just to be sure: Did you probably use the main (big) power button to
turn the power off? That would turn off _all_ devices unless you disable
group control in iPeng's settings?
Or do you have set a "synced power" in SqueezeCenter's settings for
some of your devices?

Re: [slim] 7.41rc: working OK with musicIP?

2009-10-13 Thread bobkoure

It's about sixteen shortcuts.
I could do it in three shortcuts, if it was just one shortcut per
physical device, but I've split each of those into multiple shortcuts
for two reasons:
- make mirroring to external devices one-to-one (some of my external
drives aren't as large as the internal plus each physical drive has a
couple of "new rips" folders, matching categories below - the new rips
get copied nightly to a single, attached external drive, things get
consolidated and re copied every couple of months
- easier access from the squeezebox web ui "home / music folder"

The notion in the first is that, if an internal drive fails, I can just
mount the matching external drives, change where the shortcuts point,
and I'm up and running. And I've got a mess of 500G drives. three'll
backup a 1.5TB drive - not buying a second 1.5T leaves me an extra
hundred bucks to spend on music :-)

The notion in the second is that, well, it can be overwhelming trying
to get to a particular album if a folder has more than 1K or so albums
in it. Or at least this was true in the 6.x server - haven't tried more
than two levels of folder hierarchy (i.e. shortcut->folder->album
folders) in 7.

That make any sense? You're welcome to tell me I'm totally whacked -
it'll just confirm my suspicions :-)

Oh - I wouldn't manage data on a business server this way, that -would-
be whacked. There, for every 1G in internal storage, there'd be at least
three external backup drives (or maybe two plus a cloud backup)

Re: [slim] 7.4 web UI speed issue

2009-10-13 Thread bobkoure

It takes a bit longer (maybe four and a half minutes).
This through remote desktop, which might slow things down marginally.

Interestingly, watching task manager during this four minutes, usage is
only ranging between 5% and 20% - mostly at 10%, with a couple of very
short 90% spikes and pegged to 100% for about four seconds before all
the albums show.

Once the albums have been displayed, the task manager shows usage
ranging between 0 and 20% - mostly at 4%

So, whatever I'm waiting for (or waiting on, if you're from the
midwest) it doesn't seem to be the server's CPU, running its little
heart out (my first theory whenever one of these low power servers gets
slow).

[slim] Play music in browser

2009-10-13 Thread NetSarC

Hello all!

I have 7.41 running on my Vista Atom Box.
Working just fine.
I have opened port 9000, and can remote control my server just fine.

Now..
At work, i would like to listen to my collection - including my
netradios..

I tried installing SqueezePlay (latest 7.41 and also 7.5 builds).
But it doesn't seem to be able to connect over WAN. So, no luck there.

I would like a soloution, where i just use a webbrowser, and login then
play.. Is there any easy way to stream thrugh my browser?

Thanks in advance.

You'll need to speak to pippin about iPeng in his support thread.

Re the Controller, CharlieG is right. If you go into the screen on the
Controller that shows the entire active playlist (not the now playing
screen), there is an option at the bottom to either Save or Clear
playlist. You do need more than one item in the playlist for this
option to be available. If you only have a single item in the playlist,
you can press the + button to remove it from the playlist.

Re: [slim] Play music in browser

I like VLC media because the interface is clean and simple
I was able to set up a stream from by Squeeze Server, it appears to be
playing by I get no sound from my music files (all flac's)
VLC appears to be playing the stream, and does Squeeze Server, but
there is no sound. VLC reports an mpga codec and appears to be
decoding.
My server is set to play FLAC as native (under advanced File Types).
Is the problem a misunderstanding of the codec by VLC?

One more thing, if I choose an internet radio stream (some but not all)
they play fine.

Afraid I'm in a little over my head here. Is any one up for offering

Re: [slim] clearing current playlist

2009-10-13 Thread DigitalMitch

My problem is that it is all too easy (especially in 7.4) to
accidentally replace a crafted playlist by press of play (or centre
button).

So, if you're creating a new playlist, juts play the first track
(immediately replacing current playlist) and add from there.

If you want silence, press pause or switch the player off.

I agree it's not obvious, I did spend a while wondering why no stop
button - but in practise it is unnecessary.

*.log files should not be scanned afiak ? but you can ignore filetypes

in sbs:

settings > advanced > file types

here we have an entry for "Disabled Audio File Extensions"
"
Squeezebox Server will look in the Music Folder for all supported file
types (audio files and cue sheets). To disable specific file types from
being processed when scanning the Music Folder, enter a comma separated
list of file extensions below. E.g.: cue, mp4, aac"

I have an ignore list of cue,m3u,pls

Otherwise you can have triplets when scanning ;) the tags them self a
m3u playlist and the cue sheet could spawn one album each ?
I have cleaned up my mess of a file system but who can say whats
lurking there.
I can probably remove that wo problem nowdays .

A big part of my decision was the open-source server software. I don't
see any other competitor with a similar "back end" on their product, or
as diverse or devoted a community assisting in its maintenance and

Re: [slim] 7.4 web UI speed issue

2009-10-13 Thread bobkoure

I think I may know what the issue is.
I downloaded a utility called 'hdtune' (http://www.hdtune.com/) (the
free version - not "pro")
My server has one IDE hard drive in two partitions (boot is in a
small-ish partition, the rest storage, plus a SATA 1TB and a SATA
1.5TB.
When I run hdtune, the IDE drive shows avg transfer rates of ~60MB/sec,
whereas all the SATA drives show in the 2MB/sec range.
Yow!
Why did I have a speed issue with 7.4 but not 7.3? I dunno. Maybe 7.3
did everything but streaming from a cache and 7.4 uses the music drives
a bit more.
I've got a PCI SATA adapter (and the m'board's got two "legacy" PCI
slots) but the board won't boot with the adapter plugged in if there's a
drive attached to the adapter.
Ah well, time for an atom m'board (or maybe via nano, if I can find one
that supports more than two drives attached).
Thanks for all the help!

The biggest part of the decision for me was - does it work with what I

The answer was Yes.

Next biggest was will it work with whatever audio equipment I purchase

Again yes.

Last of all, does it tie me to proprietary audio equipment I may not
like the quality of and that may not what I want in the future?

Yes again.
>From the very first day I hooked it up and heard it I knew it was a
good decision.

BTW - Maximum PC reviewed the Linksys/Cisco device. Their conclusion
was that they should stick to making routers and switches and stay away
from audio.

No. Even Slimp3 functions the same way with the current Squeezebox
Server as it did when Slimp3 Server was the name of the software.
Eventually, you will no longer get new features and access to newer
services may be limited, but it should stay working as it does now for
good while longer.

Aren't the Boom and the Transporter in principle the same as the
classic. At least they have the same "old" display type and style.
Doesn't that mean that the classic is at least completely supported as
long as these two products are? Or are the Boom and the Transporter
different so that they may get new features and access to new services
which the Classic can't get?

Display are the same technology and thus suport much the same features.
Boom uses a DSP in the audio path, so there are some different features
that may come along in time, depending on whether any time is available to
develop them. I suspect that with the newer technology becoming available
and the demands for new product to add to the portfolio, it may be hard to
expand the feature set at this level unless the same hardware gets reused
along the way.

Not at all. The older players work fine with SBS 7.4 and I would say
that will be the same with SBS 8.0. Where the issue is with first
generation players (Slimp3 and SB1) and using the built in TinySC on the
Touch. The Touch only has so much power avavilable where as a PC Server
based program now and in the future has plenty of extra processing
power.

Looks like a Boom with iPeng. I think I will save the $100 and not have

understand the setup. So again, buy a Boom, iPeng, and just load SBS on

No. You can use a Boom even without iPeng.
It's a piece of hardware that either REQUIRES an iPod touch or iPhone
or a Sonos Controller.

This is kind of a weird placement: It looks like an entry product into
the Sonos world, but then it's a 800$ kitchen radio for non-Sonos,
iPhone or iTouch users...

[slim] Display goes blank after powering off

Hi,

After I press the power button, my SB3 turns off even though
"Screensaver when off" is set to "Date and Time" (see screenshot). If I
leave the it on sitting at, say, the "Alarm Clock" menu, and wait a few
minutes, the date and time appear as expected.

This only started occuring a week or two ago.

What's wrong?

check your brightness settings. The settings are different for "off",
"active" and "idle". You can do this through the web interface, or by
presisng the brightness key on the remote when you have your player "off".
Pressing brightness button when off, changes the setting for "brightness
when off", and likewise when idle or active.

[slim] ethernet appears to be disconnected

2009-10-13 Thread jbird21

I just got a new SB3 to replace my SB1 & it worked for 2 days, now it
says "ethernet appears to be disconnected", but it is not disconnected,
I reconnected my older SB to the same cable & it works!

I've sent a message to support yesterday & haven't heard back yet

I've got it working wireless but, would prefer the wired method.

I am running older software, but that shouldn't really matter, as it
worked initially.

thanks for any advice...

Re: [slim] Why sqeezebox

2009-10-13 Thread pski

In the past, I've wired stereos together with Belkin computer-grade
cable and cat-5. In the late 80's, My four home stereos were "sync'ed"
this way. X10 power control made it universal.

The ability to play one thing everywhere (or anything anywhere) worked
well due to Sony line-level tape-recorder selector switches.

The "wireless" pre-amp from Slim extends this.

My CD collection downstairs in the pool-room was vastly under-utilized.
I had to know what to fetch. The result was listening to only the "new"
CD's upstairs.

Add a PC and 2TB of Buffalo NAS (which I can also add works well
providing DVD/HD content.)

Rather than the "pick what you want on your iPod," it's "listen to
anything from anywhere."

I can play anything at any time wherever I have a broadband connection
and with no monthly fees. (I've already bought it!)

What's not to like?

Pski

[slim] hung up on Connecting in China

2009-10-13 Thread robchel

I've experienced this problem for about 3 weeks now - trying to connect
to MySqueezeBox.com in China. To connect using the Boom, I have to
start Squeeze Sever on a PC, connect the Boom, start playing a radio
stream, which may or may not happen. About half the time, the Boom just
hangs up with "connecting' on the display. IF a station connects through
the server, I can then almost always connect the Boom directly to
MSB.com. These steps are necessary every time I unplug the Boom and/or
we loose net access for a few minutes.

As for my SB3 - I've not been able to get past the "connecting" stage
by either connecting to Squeeze Server or trying MSB.com directly for 3
weeks now. It just refuses to go beyond "connecting". I can play music
off my PC via Squeeze Server just fine over both the Boom and SB3.

I've tried a number of things [resets, power cycles, different versions
of 7.4, etc] though I've not gone back to 7.3 yet. The cats at customer
service have looked at this a couple of times and are stumped as well.
Yes, it seems to coincide with the upgrade to 7.4 and the new
MySqueezeBox.com network, but I can't find any direct link(s). And
there plenty of Great Fire Walls and other hinky stuff going on here
that may be in the mix.

Anyone else with similar experiences and/or suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

That would have been my guess.

To anyone less ignorant than I, would there not be an event log which
could shed light on this?

I'm not swift enough to find anything amiss in the log, and the cus

Same issue here. I gave up on multiplexing.

Gotta love Linux:

[slim] Letter of concern: Too many different players..?

2009-10-13 Thread RonHatl

Don't get me wrong; I think it's great that we now have the Squeezebox
Radio and Touch to "play with" or to replace our old but yet beloved
SBs..

But will the number of players affect the average quality on released
versions of the Squeezebox Server software? I mean; many players equals
many "if statements" to be handled by the software development team as
the players' hardware are different.. I wonder; Is the 'Logitech
Squeezebox' software development team staffed and managed accordingly?

PS. And this is important: So far I am VERY IMPRESSED by the quality of
both the hardware and software products from Slimdevices and now
'Logitech Squeezebox'. I think the success is very much related to the
strong enthusiasm of the freaks who spend a lot of "free time"
developing and roaming these forums! So THANK YOU ALL! You know; I just
LOVE these products!!

In SC 7.3.x I just loved coming home from work and just press and hold
the 1 key to power on and start playing my favorite radio station on my
kitchen SB3!

I'm running 7.4.0. I'm running the 'safe line' of formally released

Ok, then you should probably have gone to 7.4.1 directly. The presets
migration should have been fixed in 7.4.1... but it's kind of too late
now, as the migration is only run once.

Can you elaborate on the implications of 'migration is only run once'?

If I upgrade to 7.4.1 when it is formally released I can have the
problem fixed, right??

No. Presets are saved as prefs. Prefs migration happened from 7.3.x to
7.4.x. Once you're running 7.4.x, 7.3.x settings are ignored.

If you still have your 7.3 configuration files (in the SqueezeCenter
folder), the you could try to uninstall 7.4 again, remove all 7.4 prefs
and re-install 7.4.1. But I'm not sure it's worth the hassle.

Easier might be to play your favorite, then press & hold the preset key to
store it again.

Just to clarify for Ron, preset functionality is still there, but presets are
organised in a different way now.

What hasn't worked is the upgrade to 7.4.0 for you, which has lost your preset
settings. You can set up your presets again, and they will work.

You can't set presets through editing favorites in the web UI, instead you
navigate to an item, and then press-and-hold the preset button.
