Question: What would make it easier to recommend a Squeezebox ?

- Simplified installation and initial configuration
- Simplified usage after initial installation/configuration
- Integrated support for ripping music from CD and tagging it
- Support for more online streaming services
- Improved stability of mysqeueezebox.com
- Improved stability and/or less bugs in Squeezebox Server/Firmware
- New Squeezebox hardware which have reliable support for local music
  without a computer
- New Squeezebox hardware with built-in speakers and stereo support
- New Squeezebox hardware with support for video
- New entry level Squeezebox hardware with a lower price

I would also vote for 1W standby power consumption.

- I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox system, why change something that

- I have already invested too much in Squeezebox devices, would cost
  too much to switch
- I have just purchased a new Squeezebox and won't switch to
  something else anytime soon
- I love the 3rd party plugin/app model and would only switch to

- I would consider switching if someone offered something with

But, for those of us who use this is a primary whole-house audio
device, what's happened in the last 3 years?

A lot has happened on the hardware side for everyone that don't have a
pre-amp and external speakers in every room:

RECEIVER - MARCH 2008
- which allowed a cheap alternative to expand to another room
- which made third party remotes like iPeng and SqueezePad and
SqueezeCommander possible thanks to additions needed for the Squeezebox
Controller remote

BOOM - AUGUST 2008
- Stereo player in a room without external amplifiers and speakers

RADIO - SEPTEMBER 2009
- Small player for rooms which don't need stereo
- Battery based player that could be taken out in the garden

TOUCH - APRIL 2010
- Mainly an upgrade of the Classic with better sound
- Could have been a lot more if the built-in server had worked
reliable

I'm more disappointed at the progress on the software side than the
hardware side. If Logitech continue to release new hardware every year
as they've done the last three years it really doesn't look bad on the
hardware side. Of course, I personally doubt we will get any new
hardware during 2011, but this is just a feeling and not based on any
real information from Logitech.

I voted on the 1st alternative, but there were other valid points as

they didn't work well for me, would I?

I don't know if there is anything better out there, and honestly

I'm with erland here the server software could be so much more.

But the open source plugin architechture makes it unique for these kind
of products.

I can listen to spotify on my SB3 that product was designed before
spotify existed in the first place :)
This just one example, wich other products of this kind stays usefull
over such a long time.

that the sad thing about the underdeveloped software, it has potential
to do even more.
both regarding exploring ones own music and adding even more services.
or even better combinations of the above why not search spotify for
similar music to the files from my own library ?

Re: [slim] Network Test

2011-07-24 Thread Skye

No, never any problems with dropouts with wired Squeezeboxes (SB2 SB3),
but problems with the Receiver/Controller setup on WiFi. This led me
(some time ago) to check the wired streaming rates to establish what
rates the AP could expect to receive the data stream on the Ethernet
port. I was surprised that on a Fast Ethernet LAN, it was tripping over
itself at 5000 kbps. This led me to try other Windows XP machines as
servers, then Linux, resulting in the observations above.

Having by now got used to the feeling that the Duet is intrinsically a
bit naff, my current interest is in setting up a new media sever and
choosing the best OS to run on it. If the Network Test plugin is a
reliable indication, then I might want to avoid XP, but I don’t want to
dismiss it without convincing myself that it actually is XP rather than
some tweak I’m missing.

It’s just occurred to me that my wife’s (mainly Photoshop) PC runs
Windows 7 Home Premium. I’ll put Squeezebox Server + 250 Gig of .flacs
on that and see how she runs.

[slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?

2011-07-24 Thread onemeg

Hi all;

I'm running squeezebox server 7.3.3 on a Buffalo Linkstation NAS
(HS-DHGL8C3).

Until recently, I've been using a squeezebox boom and also a Roku M1001
accessing the NAS wirelessly via Squeezebox server,

Apart from odd drop outs, it's all held together well.

I've just bought a SB Touch which I can run either wired or
wirelessly.

Despite the Boom and Roku happily planing, I had some initial issues
with the Touch as it was saying I had to update the Server software
however it then sprung into life (unf. I can't remember what I did).

2 days later, it's again saying the Server S/W needs an update (Boom
continues to play however).

Given that the Server is running from the NAS, I'd prefer to leave that
alone and get the Touch working wherever possible

My main questions are:

1. With regard to reliability etc am I better using the Touch as a
server for the Boom/Roku (i.e. buy a USB HDD) or stick with the NAS
approach running the server?
2. Any ideas what needs doing to get the Touch working - for 36 hours
it was fine and I've not aware I've changed any settings and assume I'm
likely to be 'operator error'.
3. The speakers in my main hifi set up seem to have a static build up
when the Roku or Touch are connected. The Roku used a phono out to RCA,
the touch uses 2 x RCAs but the problem (whilst not quite as bad now)
persists. Does anyone else have/had this problem?

I love the funtionality of the Squeezebox approach however I'm
currently music-less in my lounge and would appreaciate any
assistance

Cheers all!

You could try, the built-in server in the Touch works for some people
and doesn't work at all for other people. It all depends on library
size, hard drive model and possibly also other factors.

I think the Touch requires a Squeezebox Server 7.5.x, either the
built-in one (with a connected USB drive) or the one you have on the
NAS (if you upgrade it to 7.5.x) or the one at mysqueezebox.com (which
doesn't stream any local music files).

If you connect it to different server versions, it's going to ask you
to upgrade firmware every time you switch server. This can be
especially frustrating for people who often switch between a local
server and mysqueezebox.com if their local server doesn't match the
version currently used at mysqueezebox.com.

Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?

2011-07-24 Thread Mnyb

best bet would be to get 7.5.6 beta going ( has some anoying scanner
bugs fixed ). 7.6 may be to much beta but it has better performance
on low spec hardware. if 7.6 works all is well but it has the potential
to not work at all ( it is an experimental beta ) all plugins is not yet
supported, for example custombrowse.

if you decide to upgrade you may want a completely clean install with
such large version jump ( remove every trace of the old install )

and yes 7.5.0 is the minimum version that supports Touch .

the Touch onboard server can work provided a very tidy library with no
messy tags cover art as jpg ( no bmp or png ) and the rigth USB drive
and a reasonable amount of files around 10k files are suggested use
FLAC or MP3 alac or aac or wma migth be more buggy.

Re: [slim] General Issues / a bit of help please?

2011-07-24 Thread onemeg

thanks v.m. for the initial messages.

I'm confused then how the Touch somehow, for a while, happily worked
with the 7.3.3 but I take your point.

This therefore leads to a further question!

Assuming 7.5.6 will run on the Linkstation NAS, how do I upgrade the
server on the NAS?

I previously ran Twonky on the NAS (when I only had the Roku) and it
seemed smoother/less hungry than Squeezeserver.

When I got the Boom, I wiped the NAS and installed Squezebox Server
using telnet etc. Whilst I can follow instructions etc and got there in
the end I don't really understand exactly what is going on and therefore
need to follow step by step guides I'm afraid.

Would it be possible to revert to Twonky (I suspect not) or what's the
easiest (least likely to brick!) way to upgrade the Server s/w on the
NAS?

I've previously googled around looking for this but couldn't find a
definitive guide?

cheers again

We have a third party hardware subforum, you may search there for hints
from other linkstation users I think there are several ways to
accomplish this, but I own a different kind of linux server , but for
some reason even if most NAS boxes are linux based they are much harder
to get working than a simple linux server ?

Same problem here. The Boom and Radio play Rhapsody but the Classic
doesn't output audio though I can select tracks. I upgraded to 7.5.5.

My classic is unfortunately not accessible so it would be a real pain
to connect an Ethernet cable to check if bridging is enabled. Is there
any way to verify this from the server?

I strongly suspect you never actually had the Touch running with 7.3.3.
It may have been running off its internal server, or off of
mysqueezebox.com.

onemeg;642768 Wrote:

First you are correct that Twonky will not work with Squeezeboxes. You
need Squeezebox Server 7.5.0 or later to work with the Touch. Which
instructions did you use to install 7.3.3? That would be a starting
point for trying to get 7.5.x or 7.6 beta on the LinkStation. Also
check the 3rd Party Hardware forum here, which is where most NAS things
are discussed.

If you have an external USB hard drive handy you may want to seriously
consider experimenting with using the Touch's built-in server
(TinySBS) instead of using the NAS as the server. Unfortunately, if
you use TinySBS you won't be able to use the NAS for your music library
-- TinySBS only works with a USB device attached to the Touch or a
SecureDigital memory card inserted in the Touch. If you get TinySBS
working okay (it's not reliable, but it does work fine for some people)
then that would also work as the server for your Boom. I suppose
TinySBS would leave the Roku out of the picture, but I guess you could
keep running that off the NAS.

Net test relies on timers in the operating system to generate the test
traffic. I've not tried it on windows recently, but it may be that
this causes the limitation.

It will be different on Touch/Radio with 7.6 and should be more
accurate.

If it reads 1500 all the time I would not worry - it should be enough
to stream flac.

worms than all other comparable products. It was awarded a best buy.

Re: [slim] Why do you continue to use your Squeezebox ?

Question: Why do you continue to use Squeezebox ?

- I'm satisfied with the Squeezebox system, why change something that
  works good ?
- I have already invested too much in Squeezebox devices, would cost
  too much to switch
- I have just purchased a new Squeezebox and won't switch to
  something else anytime soon
- I love the 3rd party plugin/app model and would only switch to
  something else that supports this
- I would consider switching if someone offered something with
  similar functionality
- I have already started to look for something else but haven't found
  anything interesting yet
- I have already started or completed the transition to something
  else

I'm usually the first one to bitch about anything, but I agree with
every positive comment in this thread and have not experienced any of
the downsides some have. I think the *only* issue I've ever had over
the years was the obnoxious network trouble in 7.5.3, and even that was
pretty minor.

Someone else used the phrase life changing and I have to agree. I'm
52 and have been obsessed with recorded music and its playback
technology literally for as long as I can remember.

When people first started talking about music servers, my knee-jerk
reaction was Why bother? I still think that the CD is an *excellent*
music delivery system and thought that people complaining about the
alleged inconvenience of discs were crazy.

But at some point in the high-speed Internet era I started downloading
lossless live concerts and, as an eMusic member, MP3s. I also
discovered online radio, specifically Radio Paradise. Integrating all
that stuff into a normal stereo was a pain. I started out with a
Roku Soundbridge just because I liked having something like that for
Internet radio. But I was never happy with its playback of my own
files (anything that isn't gapless is, as far as I'm concerned, crap)
and on a whim bought a Squeezebox.

Oh, boy. At first it was just to let me mix and match Internet radio
with what I'd downloaded. It was nice to be able to audition the
downloads before committing them to disc and *then* finding out there
was some fatal problem. But it didn't take long before I started
thinking about putting my main collection of pressed CDs online and
once I started, I was unable to stop until I was finished. It took me
fully a year and half to get it all done but now, as others have said,
I listen to my music more than I did for years beforehand.

I've probably got 2,500 or more CDs. They're reasonably well
organized, but the physical reality of the layout of the house combined
with general clutter makes some of them difficult to get to. Then
there's that whole thing where I know I have a copy of that song, but
what compilation CD is it on..? None of that is an issue any more.
And my normal collection integrates perfectly with my bootleg
collection and with Internet radio and with podcasts. EVERYTHING is in
one place.

The ability to queue up any songs I want, re-arrange playlists on the
fly, add another track because something in what I'm listening to now
reminds me of it, etc. just makes it all even sweeter.

There are even obscure cases where playing something via the Squeezebox
works better than playing the disc. I've collected a lot of DTS
conversions of old quadraphonic albums over the years, and my luck
getting CD-Rs to work reliably on disc spinners has been up and down.
I no longer care: If I can get a clean read into the computer, I'm
set.

Then there's the whole thing about being able to get to my entire
library from any wi-fi equipped motel anywhere in the world...

The list just goes on and on and on. Other than, I suppose, the amount
of time it took to set everything up, I can't think of a single negative
about this system at all. No, I take that back: The one single lone
thing it can't do that I wish it could is output multichannel FLAC,
allowing me to get my DVD-As online. Of course, that's probably a
fraction of a percent of my collection and I'm not losing any sleep
over it.

Another completely unexpected benefit is that it's gotten me a bit more
comfortable using Linux. I started out with an XP server, but it was
just too overloaded and didn't work out so well. I wound up buying a
very cheap box to run Linux and haven't looked back.

I have owned an SB3 for 5 years now. My collection includes:
- 1 x SB3
- 1 x Boom
- 2 x Duet

I love the quality of the sound, the 3rd party applications, the easy
access to some 60,000 tracks AND the ability to stream podcasts and
radio stations seamlessly.

I absolutely LOVE the fact that I can control all the units using my
iPhone or ProntoSqueeze.

The only down side has been that the software has been a little odd
from time to time but for me the system is rock solid. Perhaps this is
as I'm a networking guy by trade which means GigE everywhere, a stable
wireless infrastructure and manged address allocation.

Regardless, I love the little things. I just wish that intelligent
playlists were better.

Essentially, there are two ways: either you dragdrop the players onto
each other or you mark a few of them and press the sync button.
I find the latter option to be the most simple and efficient one but
that may be only me.

Why do I stick with Squeezebox? The software updates are frequently
irritating (I've turned off automatic updates after 7.5.5) and the
clients are not exactly intuitive. But, at the time I bought my first
one (see sig) there simply wasn't a viable and affordable alternative.

My brother-in-law bought Sonos and, while he's had none of the wireless
networking issues I enjoy, he has had many library management issues
with the system simply not seeing some sources. And he's an Apple
fanatic as well! Plus I think my system looks and sounds better than
his.

Until the Sonos Play 3 there wasn't an equivalent to Boom (better bring
in Boom 2 quickly guys) and the Radio is still the best. Touch is flawed
but unbeatable for the price IMHO.

Would I buy again? Maybe. I've been a Naim fan for years and may have
gone the Uniti route had it arrived earlier or if I was starting out
now.

But I've also realised that I'm now retired with 60-year-old years so
income and hearing are now both sub-optimal. I'm now the weak link
in the audio chain. Heck - I've also just splashed out on a Revox PR99
MK2 reel-to-reel tape recorder so what does that tell you about me?

Bottom line - still good value for money but not recommended for
techno-phobes.

Thank you and good night.

- Its support for third party plugins
- The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new

- This community and forum
- I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone

I've had my Squeezebox Touch a few days and have been unable to get one

I haven't given up yet as I am reasonably competent with computers, I

I would never recommend a Squeezebox Touch to friends or relatives as I
would be called upon continually to help them set them up and fix their

If anyone asks me I would tell them to get a good quality CD player

Maybe that's what I should have done !

I setup a boom and touch for my brother, with a 50,000 mp3 library
connected to touch via usb drive running internal tiny SbS. No
problems a year later and he doesn't have a clue how any of this
works.

I set up a boom for an 85+ year old woman connected via mysb.com. No
problems almost a year later. And again, she just hits the power button
and presets. When firmware updates hit, she has to hit a few keys, but
somehow, she has done this without even calling me.

In both cases they have robust networks and both are using wifi for
everything.

lots of folks around here to give you help on this. but you should
probably start a new thread, and list all the relevant facts. Are you
using SbS on your own machine? Which OS, using tinySBS and attached USB
drive? etc. What problems are you having. We need info to assist in

First, read this:

work at all with 6.5.4. So if you have a Boom, Duet, Radio, or Touch --
