[slim] Cannot connect with Windows 7

2010-04-28 Thread Mike White

I have an SB3 which has been working just fine until I got a new
computer with Windows 7 home premium on it. My SB3 will now no longer
connect to SqueezeCenter - it will connect to MySqueezeBox.com, but not
to my Win 7 box. I have turned off the Windows firewall, and uninstalled
all anti-virus software. Still no joy.

I am running the latest version of SqueezeCenter.

Anyone have any ideas?

Mike

Re: [slim] Just curious: when/why did you get your first Slim/Logitech player?

2008-10-17 Thread Mike White

It was probably about 6 or 8 months before SqueezeNetwork went live. We
live in an area that simply cannot get FM (or AM for that matter) in
the house, and only weak signals in the car. It wasn't a problem for
years, as we were simply able to pick up the FM signals on our cable
TV. The the cable provider simply shut that off in February and we were
stuck without the ability to listen to music except on our single CD
player. One of our local radio stations sent out an email, talking
about the SB2, and after looking at it for about an hour, I ordered
one, and have been using it ever since.

I have ripped our music collection, but the vast majority of our
listening is to various radio stations around the world.

[slim] KKSF 103.7 (Staff Pick)

2008-05-10 Thread Mike White

KKSF in San Francisco (103.7 FM) simply does not work. When you attempt
to connect to it, it always ultimately says timed out waiting for
data. The same thing happens when trying to connect through
SqueezeCenter.

Does anyone have a better URL to use?

Re: [slim] Kksf 103.7

2008-02-18 Thread Mike White

Thank you for the information, and the URL. Unfortunately, as I just
found out, if I put this in a playlist in slimserver, it works just
great. However, if I put it in squeezenetwork, it tells me that it
cannot open the remote - which is a little bit disturbing...

What are the suggestions now? Switching to SC7 or what??? It does
appear that something in SqueezeNetwork is broken.

And how do I switch to SC7?

2007-12-04 Thread Mike White

I'm just tetchy thanks to the 1 week old new arrival at home that won't

Mom's milk?

Seriously, about 30 years ago I had the same problem, and wound up
reading to the lad for all hours of the night. I was going to law
school at the time, and found that if I just cuddled him, and read to
him he would quiet right down.

I think he slept all the way through contracts, constitutional law, and

[slim] Switching between SN and SB

2007-11-27 Thread Mike White

I have noticed over the past few months - two or three - that when I am
connected to SqueezeNetwork (SN) and try to to reconnect to SlimServer
on my computer (SS), that I have a significant difficutly in
connecting.

Essentially what happens is that I try to connect to SS and the display
tells me that it is attempting to connect, then goes blank. If I do this
over and over, eventually I will actually make a connection - after that
all is well.

I initially found this problem when I was normally connected to SS. I
would turn on the SB2, and it simply would not connect to the SS. It
seemed to be better if I hit the power on button two or three times
very quickly as I was trying to get things up.

Has anybody seen this type of problem - or found a solution? It is a
little embarrassing to be showing off your lovely stereo solution and
not be able to turn the damn thing on.

I can reproduce this problem - VERY interimently - being connected to
SqueezeNetwork directly rather than to slimserver. This would lead me
to suspect that this is a firmware issue rather than a slimserver
issue.

There are no wireless networks around me. No wireless phones being used
close by. When I am connected to Squeezenetwork my computer is
completely turned off.

When the squeezebox stops, if I press play again, the music will
resume.

My wireless strength runs at 80% or better virtually all the time - as
in I have never seen it lower than 80%.

My issue is that the SB2 simply stops playing - doesn't turn off,
doesn't blank the screen, simply stops playing, although if you look at
the screen, the SB2 seems to think that it is still playing, because
that is what it says. Network diaganostics are fine, no apparent
interference.

[slim] Squeezebox stopping

2007-10-19 Thread Mike White

I have an SB 2 running slimserver 6.5.4 on Windows XP with all relevant
patches. 2.2 Ghz system with 1.2 gig memory.

I can play selections with no trouble on my wireless squeezebox, but
periodically I have the following trouble:

1) Playing a playlist will stop playing after 'X' period of time,
although the SB shows that it is still playing, just no sound out of
the speakers.

2) Pressing play will start the playlist over again (I am playing
shuffled, so it took a while to figure this out).

3) Pressing forward will result in the music resuming, although after
another 'X' (which is not the same as the first 'X' period of time, it
seems to be shorter) the sound will again go away.

4) This also happens when I am playing music from a genre, although not
as frequently. Again I am playing shuffled.

5) This does not seem to happen at all when I am using Softsqueeze 3.4,
or at the very least it appears that I am not able to reproduce it using
Softsqueeze.

To the best of my memory, I have cleared and done a complete rescan,
which has done nothing to fix this issue. As memory serves me this has
been a problem for the last two releases, but I can't swear to that.

Has anyone else seen this problem???

[slim] 6.5.3 issue

2007-07-13 Thread Mike White

Maybe it is just me, but I am having an issue with the latest release,
6.5.3 downloaded July 13th (is that an omen?). In any event I do prefer
to be able to see what album/artist I am listening to on occasion. (i.e.
there's a problem with the cut, so I want to know what I need to fix) So
6.5.3 only allows me to show the title of the song - nothing else. I
initially started with a nightly because of issues with 6.5.2
(released), but now I am thinking of returning to 6.5.2.

Not slamming anyone, but I would think that this is the kind of issue
that should have kept this from a production release. If it wasn't
caught in beta, then I would think that QA should have caught it in any
kind of a normal testing cycle, although I know that there are a
thousand or more confirguations that do need to be tested.

Does anyone else have this issue? I am running Windows XP, with all the
current updates. Java has been updated to the absolute latest. This
happens with both SoftSqueeze and my SB2.

I am running with 1.2 gigs of memory, and two hard drives, the smallest
of which is about 170 gigs, although the one with the music on it is
about 250 gigs.

Thanks,

This issue shows up on both the SB and on SoftSqueeze (assuming that is

Actually, I think it is under formatting, and I have verified what it

Seems like a lot of trouble for what is surely a minor problem

You are probably right, but I have had a few cuts go south on me, and
trying to find them and fix them is more than a bit of a problem (I
won't use the word I wanted to).

You downloaded the nightly and you do understand that it is not a
production release at all? It is a nightly snapshot. It is usually
fine and dandy with only bugfixes going in, but sometimes one fix
 breaks something else...

Yep - I initially downloaded a nightly with the full understanding that
it is a beta (at best) build. I have spent the last 20 years or so doing
software QA, although I can always be introduced to something new. I
also downloaded the just released build, which is what I was commenting
on.

Okay, I have changed the player settings as you suggested, which
worked. My apologies for thinking (and implying) that QA wasn't doing

What I did do is try to change the settings on the server, not the

Now my question resolves to what is the difference between the server

Yep - I sure as hell should have figured this out, I have enough

I bought - a number of months ago - a setup that allowed me to broadcast
my music (via SB2) to a pair of speakers that could be either battery
powered or plugged in.

It is not the best thing in the world, but we can put the speakers
anywhere, either with or without batteries (we have never used
batteries.) Out by the spa is wonderful, especially at night with just
the stars out.

I am not happy with the manufacturer because I had a few issues with
them, but this is a possibility for others. I would just recommend that
they use a different system.

[slim] Problems with SlimServer 6.5.2

2007-07-10 Thread Mike White

I am running SS6.5.2 released on Windows XP with all updates. I am
seeing two problems.

(1) I added new music in the last day or so, and lo and behold, I
cannot find the music with SS. I can see it on the disk, and I can play
it with Window Media Player, but SS doesn't even know it exists. I have
cleaned and rescanned the entire library at least twice - no joy. I am
now not sure that SS knew the artist was even there before, but of
course don't have an easy way to go back and check. The artist is
Emilylou Harris and I do not find even an entry for her if I look at
artists, either under SS or under SoftSqueeze. Neither one will find
her.

(2) I am also seeing when I go to Browse on my SB3 that my computer
name is coming up, i.e. COMPUTER:OWNER. When I check to see what this
is, it tells me that

UPnP request failed, please check the UPnP server.

Whatever this means. This happens both with SoftSqueeze and with my
SB3.

I have updated my firmware, I have reinstalled everything. No luck.

Anybody got any ideas?

[slim] Problem switching from Squeezenetwork to Slimserver

2007-03-23 Thread Mike White

I am running slimserver 6.5.1, released, on an XP machine with 1 gig
ram. I have an SB2. Since upgrading to 6.5.1, I have noticed a problem
that completely escapes me.

I can play my music on my XP server with no problem. I can switch from
slimserver to squeezenetwork using the remote and my SB2 with no
problem.

HOWEVER, when I try to switch back from squeezenetwork to slimserver,
i.e. select connect to slimserver (with slimserver up and running I
might add)I find that just doesn't work. The SB2 display, instead of
connecting to slimserver, simply gives me the internet station that I
had been playing - or at least that is what the display says.

I don't believe that this problem existed earlier, but to be honest, I
haven't tried earlier versions, because that was my primary reason for
switching to 6.5.1 - I was having other problems at the time.

The only way I have found to get back to slimserver is to disconnect
the power for a few seconds, then when it comes back up, press and hold
the add button. As I recall this forces a factory reset, and that is
what appears to happen. When this does happen, I also need to download
new firmware, which it says has been successfully downloaded, the SB2
reboots, and after going through the various setup scenerios, lo and
behold I am connected to slimserver.

This is, obviously, a bit of an inconvience, not to say a bit
frustrating.

Does any one know what is causing this, a way to get around it, or just
what is going on?

Thanks,

Mike

[slim] Re: Open Source Dream Falls Apart?

2006-10-27 Thread Mike White

I am an open source developer, and have been for ten years or more. Not
on SlimServer, but on Info-Zip.org.

I do this because:

1) I like seeing my ideas out there, and people enjoying what product I
put out.

2) I truly enjoy coding - when I have the time - and it makes a good
hobby that doesn't require a lot of money to maintain.

3) Most importantly, I am giving back to the community - not just the
open source community, but the computer users community. I have worked
with computers for close to 40 years, and every single time I have
sought help from others, I have not only been given the help I
requested, but far more. In my opinion it is time I give some of that
back. If someone makes money off it, more power to them. I know for a
fact that some companies have incorporated my dll's and libraries into
their commercial products. All I have ever asked is that credit be
given to me for the code I have provided. It always has been to the
best of my knowledge.

[slim] Interesting problem/observation

2006-10-09 Thread Mike White

Don't know if this is a bug, or something just got whacky.

Running an SB2 with 6.5.0 on Windows XP.

On Saturday the 7th, I turned on the SB to get internet radio through
squeezenetwork. It worked fine for awhile, then I happened to look at
the SB display, and noticed that it was displaying that it couldn't
connect to squeezenetwork - however the station I was listening to was
coming through fine. Okay, it is probably just what was buffered I say
to myself. I watch it for awhile, and it keeps doing this. Connects to
squeezenetwork (SN), then says it can't connect, connects again, then
says it can't connect. Over and over. The music keeps coming through
just fine.

I finally say the hell with it, I want to be quiet, and listen to
music, not go trouble-shooting. I switch to slimserver. Everything is
fine. Music plays just fine.

Sunday the 8th, I saw the e-mail about SN being down so I just continue
to listen to slimserver.

Monday the 9th. Decide to listen to internet radio through SN. It
connects just fine, no problems, for a moment, then a god-awful hum
comes through the speakers. Not a 60 cycle (hertz to you newcomers)
hum, just a horrible hum.

Oh s***, what has gone wrong now? Turn off the SB, leaving just the
amplifier on. Still a hum (actually it is more of a horrible static hum
than anything else).

Tried connecting to slimserver - still a horrible hum.

BTW - the wireless router is new, about a week old. No problems with my
laptop.

SB is connected to aux in, so I try playing just a CD. No problems.
Turn the SB back on and switch to aux. Horrible hum.

Okay, let's see if it is the amplifier or the SB. Unplug the SB. Turn
the amp back on, switched to aux. No hum - no noise either, but that
was expected.

Turn the SB back on - go through the setup again, and voila. No hum,
connects to SN or slimserver with no problems, no hum.

I have no idea what, if anything other than gremlins, caused this, or
what corrected it.

It sounds like an old radar set we used to have when I was in the Navy.
We had a small X marked on the side of the case. Every so often the
radar would just go nuts. We did find that if you hit the side of the
case where the 'X' was, it would instantly clear up. I don't know what
the problem ever was, because nine months later it was still doing it
when I left. We had checked every single wire and replaced every single
tube with no joy. We even resoldered every joint, and did everything
else we could think of. We even had the yard technicians go through it
with a fine tooth comb. No joy. For all I know that damn radar is still
doing it, except I am sure it was retired from service many years ago.

In any event, if anybody has any ideas (other than painting an 'X' on
the side of the SB) I would love to hear them.

Mike

[slim] Why a Transporter

2006-10-02 Thread Mike White

Forgive me for being a little bit dense, but my question is this - what
does a Transporter do for me?

Now I know I am not an audiophile - my wife is, and she has perfect
pitch, according to what she tells me it is both in hearing and in
singing a note. I, of course, have to take her word on this as while I
am not tone deaf, cannot hear a lot of the differences she says she
can. (Please note that I didn't say she claims.)

We have an SB2 that we bought because we are in an area that cannot
receive FM signals on the radio. When I investigated, I was taken by
the ability to not only receive FM over the internet, but by being able
to play our own music - rather like a giant CD changer.

What would buying a Transporter give us? We have an anniversary coming
up, that I might, repeat might, justify the $2K to buy one, but I
really need to know what we would be getting for the money.

We have an older Bose system (read 5 or 6 years old) that so far we
have been perfectly happy with, but if this would be something that
would really knock her socks off, then maybe I should consider it.

So far I can admittedly say that I really don't understand what the
Transporter can do for us.

Thanks in advance.

every so often - no rhyme or reason to it, just stop. A nightly didn't
help things at all, just made it worse.

Returning to 6.5.0 finally after uninstalling everything that
slimserver had installed, and even deleting the directories.

I updated to the latest firmware (64 I believe), and tried to play all
my music by going to browse albums, right click, all songs and hitting
play.

Within moments SqueezeBox was displaying a report that it couldn't find
a file in genre Celtic - which is the way that I have set up some of
my music. It then started to try to buffer something like California
Sponsored ... (Don't actually remember the entire title, but it sure
isn't anything I ripped), it got to 87% and stuck there.

I went back and made sure I selected shuffle before I tried to play all
songs again. This worked.

I suspect that the new database is not working quite correctly, and a
few of the stopping issues I am seeing are related to the database not
referring to the proper path.

To the best of my memory, slimserver 6.3.1 reported 612 albums, and
slimserver 6.5.0 reports 614 albums. I have not added any albums of any
kind.

I am running on Windows XP home edition, with 1 gig of ram, and about
500 gigs of hard disk space, which is not full by any stretch of the
imagination.

[slim] 6.5 Woes

2006-09-23 Thread Mike White

I am running XP with all the latest service patches, an SB2 over a
wireless network that up to now has been basically flawless. (At one
time I did have a problem with my wireless phone too close to the
netgear transmitter, which caused some wierd problems.)

I am also running 6.5 without any add-ons etc. When I installed 6.5 I
carefully went through and uninstalled 6.3.1 and made sure that any
references in the registry were deleted before I installed 6.5.

I am now seeing the following problems:

1) I cannot set up the live365 account information. It very kindly
tells me that there is no live365 account information, but I can't
figure out how to give it the information it apparently wants. I am
probably just being blind in one eye and not able to see out of the
other, but this has become more than a little irritating.

2) Periodically it will come back and say (the squeezebox2) that it
either cannot connect to a particular station ( on squeezenetwork) or
cannot find the playlist when looking at my hard drive. I think I
understand the issue here, and will address it. Basically, the new
version of slimserver does not recognize the old version (6.3.1)
playlists, and gets confused. I will experiment with it and see what I
come up with.

3) I get interiment errors when connected to squeezenetwork, or to
slimserver itself, none of which are repeatable for any length of time,
but are frustrating. A little patience seems to clear the errors, but my
wife has even less patience than I, and wants to it to work the first
time.

Help...

[slim] Re: HawaiianRainbow.com

2006-09-15 Thread Mike White

That fixed the problem - if you have the time, let me know how you got
the actual url - it would help me not have to bother you in the
future.

[slim] HawaiianRainbow.com

2006-09-14 Thread Mike White

For months now I have been enjoying listening to music from
HawaiianRainbow.com. However, in the last few days, I have been unable
to do so. I contacted the webmaster, and he indicated that he had been
forced to switch to a different url because of server crashes.

I have tried url snooper listening to both realplayer and winamp from
this site (they both work on my pc), but url snooper doesn't pick up
anything.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get this streaming for me
again?

Thanks,

Mike

[slim] Softsqueeze and SqueezeBox2

2005-11-11 Thread Mike White

I have just noticed something that is a little odd. If I am just running
SoftSqueeze while I am on my computer, then quit SoftSqueeze, and turn
on my SqueezeBox2 (playing the same music, just listening to it away
from the computer), SlimServer seems to hang up. The SB2 shows a track
playing, but nothing is coming out of the speakers. Restarting the SB2
doesn't change anything. Ultimately I rebooted my computer, and
everything started working correctly.

Any ideas?

I am running Win XP, all current updates, and SlimServer 6.2.0, over a
wireless network.

Thanks,

Mike
