[slim] NAS recommendations/Mac Mini

2007-03-27 Thread Simon Still

My server PC has died so i'm thinking of taking a different approach - a mac
mini in the kitchen (with EyeTV) as a media hub and an NAS to give me
properly resilient storage.

Any recommendations or advice? I've not owned or used a mac regularly for
many years.

Also, which NAS should I look at and how easy is it to install slimserver on
one? Any disadvantages - slower? harder to upgrade? (my linux knowledge
is minimimal - i suspect i'd have to follow a detailed "script" to get it
installed.

I'm with Aragorn here. I've had no issues with the latest release version

For your questions 2 and 3 i think the answer to both is 'no'.  the pay version allows you to create waypoint mixes (i think i read about that on here) but you'd create them in MusicIP and send them whereas i run MusicIP in server mode so only open the application to scan new music

[slim] Nokia 770 charging cradle?

2006-10-20 Thread Simon Still
Getting away from the Logitech Slim discussion for a moment it's worth remembering some of the advantages of the Slim solution. Finally with 6.5 I'm using the Nokia 770 with the 770 skin and it makes a great remote for Slimserver.  It is really good - sure a scroll wheel and some buttons would be a much better navigation method than a stylus which can be a bit fiddly but it lets you access the full power of a multi-room Squeezebox solution.
My one big gripe is forgetting to charge the thing and finding it with flat batteries when i need to use it - for a device of this type an old school Palm/Pronto style set of contacts and a base for charging would have been really sensible.  Has anyone rigged any sort of solution that means you can put the 770 to bed simply and have it charged when you pick it up without fiddling with cables?

I think this is good news - what Slim needed to progress to mass market was more R&D investment, access to mainstream, global, distribution and cheaper manufacturing costs to get the end product price down. All of that should come with Logitech.  They're one of the high end aftermarket peripheral companies IMV.  Their current audio kit might not be aimed at the high end but that can change and the Harmony remotes are most definitely aimed at high end AV.
The Harmony remotes are excellent and the potential for integration between Harmony and SB is huge.

It's interesting all the variations that are possible.  I'm sure a lot of us are runnign at least one of our SB's into a surround amp and probably using the optical out on the SB and using the amp's DA converter.Built in amp?  don't understand that one.  As it is you can use a set of powered speakers (of which there are increasing numbers available) or a seperate amp giving the option of other inputs (TV, radio tuner etc).
Built in radio?  Internet radio seems to remove the need for an FM or DAB tuner - if you want one of these get a receiver rather than an amp.I'm not sure I'd buy a boombox but i can see why people would want one.

2006-07-25 Thread Simon Still
Congratulations - this isn't for me (theres no way I could drop that much on a player) but it's a supurb product.  With the stable, fast, Slimserver (lets hope) that is promised by 6.5 this will redefine the market.
I've never been a great fan of the industrial design of the squeezebox in either incarnation but this looks great.  I love the curves on the case edge and whilst it wouldn't match any of my other kit it is more than any other the item to put on show.  The row of identical buttons along the bottom don't suggest 'form follows function' has been the design mantra but look good.
Even the remote looks a cut above (and much more of a match for the SB3 than the current model - after market upgrade anyone?)The knob is cool, the twin displays will be full configurable (a new version of music info screensaver anyone?) and can be switched off for the minimalist look.
It's a lot of money but not for an audiophile product.  Those connections parts and case will have cost a packet.  Heres hoping for the trickle down product before too long -  same case and controls, standard SB3 parts inside.  300usd ;-)  I'll dream on. ...

I thought the target for TV's on standby was now <1watt.  I know squeezebox isn't a huge power consumer but it's still too  much - moving from a situation where i have a CD player in each room that consumes nothing when i'm not using it to a squeezebox in each room (say 4? 5? of them) i'm upping my constant power consumption by 25w.  That may be small but it's significant.
If you've a 10 watt nightlight it's hugely inefficient.  A 10 watt compact fluorescent bulb is enough to light a small room.On 7/2/06, Michaelwagner

2006-06-21 Thread Simon Still
I use my 770 as a network player connected to some powered speakers.  It works fine but you don't get the control that you do with a squeezebox (hit pause and it plays out the buffer for example) but it does give you a bit of extra value out of it.
I've got a Jamin as well but i've not managed to get it connected to my wireless net yet (i just need to check my keys i think).  the screen will probably be too small and low res to use effectively as an SB remote (but on the other hand it could be free as an upgrade phone rather than £245)
the 770 is a nice device but i really don't think it's worth that amount of money - an older pda would probably be a lot faster and cheaper. On 6/21/06,

Just for the record, I absolutely detest Apple iPod and iTunes.  It's just not designed for Windows properly. The user interface in iTunes is horrible.  I hate the fact that all music is in one massive spreadsheet display, rather than structured and viewable by artist/album/genre, etc like Slimserver and Foobar.  I can't see what all the fuss is about regarding playlists either.
My wifes music collection was organised quite nicely.  After she ran up iTunes (I left her to it - bad choice!), by default it converted a load of her ripped wma albums to aac format, creating copies of the music on my C drive, rather than another disk where I usually keep all music files.  Confused the hell out of her.  It split up compilation albums, so that each track was stored in a folder for each artist (rather than in a folder for the album).  I think this is why compilation album logic within SlimServer was awkward to handle, because it had to allow for iTunes.  It took a while to reorganise things and get iTunes working with music stored in the correct place.
I'd agree with some of those points but not others.  I tend to rip music outside iTunes and then import in.   Organising everything by artist/album/track seems to make sense to me.  Having iTunes organise your music is optional and you can specify where it's library sits (but like pretty much all windows apps it defaults to C). the compilation treatment works for itunes and the ipod - why would you ever navigate your music by directory?
I've a 2nd gen iPod which i've stopped using because of battery life issues, a winmobile2005 phone (which i use to play music off a memory card via win media player) and an iRiver T30.  The latter two need to be synched via Windows Media Player and it's horrible.
iTunes is wonderfully responsive - type the first few letters of an artist/album/song in and the 'spreadsheet' view instantly shrinks to the relevant entries.  finding stuff is a breeze.  Alternatively click on the genre/artist lsit at the top and find stuff that way.  A search in windows media player results in a few seconds of uncertainty as to whether it's crashed.  the web interface to my SB3 is much the same.
What iTunes lacks is the idea of a now playing list - click a track and it plays it.  Want to set something up to follow?  Sorry, time to create a playlist and start over. I really like that aspect of Slimserver - via the web interface i can start with one song, add a musicip selection, remove all tracks by a particular artist.  really good.   But it isnt very responsive, icons are too small, the layout confuses new users.
This is why review after review in the mainstream press marks down the Squeezebox against Roku (most recently in the June issue of Stuff in the UK).  I've high hopes for 6.5.

A bit of an odd one - i don't know if it's a bug or not.  I set up WPA-PSK on my Netgear router with a 12 digit numerical key.  This worked fine on my XP laptop and on the Nokia 770 but my SB2 will not play ball - it gets as far as DHPC but takes a bizarre IP address on a completely different subnet which of course means it can't connect with my server.  Adding a single non-numerical character and it's fine.  Is this the SB2 thats out of spec or are the other devices overly flexible in what they'll allow?

The 770 skin *may* be brilliant but i'll reserve judgement until it achieves a release outside betas.    I probably was rather harsh on skins - a different skin is necessary for handhelds, touchscreens and maybe some specific devices.  However, as an example of the current issues with Slimserver - i've tried using the touchscreen skin on my 770 and it seems to be buggy and incomplete.  Some screens look different to others, some of the buttons don't seem to do anything.
Another example of the QA process not working.

2006-02-15 Thread Simon Still
I love my two squeezeboxes and i've just supplemented my iPod (2G) with a iRiver T30 because i was fed up with having a portable device that didnt have a replacable battery - i spent more time carrying it dead than listening to it.  I've not used the iPod since.  I wouldn't buy any DRM'd music and stick to open formats.
However, I think the iPod interface is supurb and iTunes is a good looking, intuitive, program.  It kicks the butt of WMP or Slimserver at the moment (though the lack of a 'current playlist' is a bit of a weakness).
Slimserver still comes across as hobbyware -  it's fiddly, unintuitive and inconsistent in the way it works.  Settings are hidden all over the place and it it's skinned and skins are, IMO, a terrible idea - 10 poor, incomplete interfaces rather than one good one.

I've been using it on XP for some months now and really like it.  It would be nice if it would run as a service rather than an app as i don't use the MMM interface but generate playlists from the slim web interface (or from the SB's).
I've had no issues running it that way.  I tend to generate a pl off a seed song and see what else comes up - it usually points me in the direction of another album.  A great way of getting the most from a large music collection.

Re: [slim] Re: Nokia 770 & Slimserver- Any regrets?

2006-02-10 Thread Simon Still
I really like the 770 as a slimserver remote.  I play a lot of musicmagic mixes and it's great for that.  I've not got the 770 skin as I got fed up with running Slimserver betas ages ago but the handheld skin with optimise switched on at 150% is perfect.  The 770 skin might be better but it's not essential.
As a slim remote for building playlists the speed and responsiveness is perfectly adequate.  As a webbrowser the 770 does start to suffer - open too many windows and it will fall over, not all websites resize usefully and it's still a small screen for reading from.  It's not *that* cheap - you can buy a bottom end Dell laptop for 50% more so it's poor value as a computer.   I can't see why you'd carry it around with you elsewhere - if theres a wireless lan you can probably find a proper computer to use.  Browsing over GPRS is painful if you're used to broadband and it's not really a great music player (stupid card format) and comes with no PDA (or more importantly sych software) functionality as standard.  Yes you can put it on but unless the synch is 100% it's a waste of time.

The new search function helps a lot, particularly now it sits at the top of fishbone by default.Probably the area that does need most work is the settings pages.  There are some significant idiosyncracies with the organisation and how they work.  Admittedly, most people would be quite happy with the defaults and would never change anything but some customisations really require a lot of messing.
MusicMagic failed on me with the new install.  The plugin was ticked, the custom options were there, but the switch that had appeared that was needed for the thing to actually work was buried in the first 'server settings' page.  I know many microsoft apps have equally deeply buried options but this could be better.

The key is to get a cross-over network cable to connect to the twodevices. Otherwise, no workie.

My Tivo is a series 1 with a cachecard - if connecting directly to the
squeezebox as a bridge you do need a cross over cable.  as my

Indeed, but there are some diminishing  returns on
investment.  I've read there is little difference in components
between mid-range and top end stuff and that as you get 'higher' the
proportion of the purchase price that pays for the casework increases
exponentially.   This seems about right - high quality, low
volume metalwork is expensive but there are only so many places to buy
components.

Cables and interconnects are pure snake oil.  It is possible to
buy real crap ('pound shop' scart leads in the UK tend to suffer all
sorts of cross talk) but once you get to after market power leads
you're really in the realms of fantasy.

2005-09-11 Thread Simon Still
I can't work out how to switch on bridging.  i know the option
came up when i first installed the SB2 but i can't get it to ask me
again.

I've looked at the manual and it says 'at the end of setup it will ask
you if you want to switch on bridging' but holding down the power key
to reset and going through setup again it isnt doing that.  I've
found a 'status' set of screens that tells me that bridging is switched
off but again that's not a lot of help as it doesnt let me change the
setting.

I suspect this is something obvious that i'm missing but can someone

I've had a lot of this sort of problem. As suggested, try ripping
with a different encoder (i've reripped some stuff before and had the
same issue). My default encoder is Lame at alt-preset-extreme. If i
get problems i rip with iTunes at 256 or 320 constant bit rate - my
theory is that its VBR tracks that cause the most problems.

[slim] Skins - many don't seem to work.

2005-08-03 Thread Simon Still
The only skins i've used are Fishbone and the default. There's a big
list of skins in the latest slimserver release (i don't use betas or
nightlies) but it appears quite a few of them don't work properly -
when i try Fishbone2, for example, i dont seem to have graphics for
any of the buttons in the player or to select tracks.

If these skins aren't working they should be removed from a release -
this is meant to be a consumer product which means in production
software functionality should work or not be there.

Personally I'd like to see some work on Fishbone (which i think is
underway). Bigger buttons to select tracks and 'striping' to improve
readability in the the lefthand pane. Many of the other skins now
seem superfluous - does anyone here use anything other than default,
handheld or Fishbone?

So,

Within server settings there should now be an additional 'tab' (not a
tab but seems the best word) for Musicmagicah. Ok, you're useing

Get musicmagic. Moodlogic appears to be a dead product and relies on

[slim] iTunes playlists

2005-07-24 Thread Simon Still
How do iTunes playlists work and how do i get them to appear in
Slimserver? I used to get the 'standard' itunes playlists appear but
when i add new ones they don't show up in slimserver, even after a
rescan.

I found some m3u files with odd names in the itunes folder and tried
deleting them. Taking these out meant that slimserver then lost the
'standard' itunes playlists as well but they still appear in iTunes.

I'm at a bit of a loss as to how the playlists work. It started
because I wanted to add an internet radio station as a playlist - i've
got it to appear in iTunes but cant get it to show up in slim.
