Likely your Synology isn't powerful enough to run Roon. Check at the Roon forum. There's a synology thread. Last Christmas Roon had a "sale": give someone a subscription for about 30% off (including lifetime, which made it a much better deal). It was supposed to be for "new" subscribers. Roon has now released "RoonSpeakers" - endpoint software that makes audio HW compatible with Roon. Anybody have an idea if an SBT could be hacked and this software installed on it? I'd be interested, as it would enable music streaming from Roon to a Touch, without using the present Roon solution, which is a stripped down type of SB "server" that doesn't include use of plugins, etc. GIK Acoustics Room Treatments. Re: [slim] Logitech SqueezeBox replacement for under $30
It's a real shame that the Empirical Audio Off Ramp 5 uses the HiFace (1) chipset for USB audio input, which is no good for Linux, as this would be pretty much perfect otherwise as it also offers LVDS I2S output which is really hard to find on other interfaces. Most amplifiers have more than one aux input! If you wanted to listen to internet radio or streaming services you could use the UE. If you wanted to random play from selected genres in a local music collection you could use your Squeezboxen. That is really no different from having a separate Tuner and CD player. A bit of step backwards, but not terminal. The whole point of the new software is to eliminate the local server. So features like local synch of local music files, and random play go out the window. I think for the future customers of Logitech this makes sense; it just doesn't work for the existing SB customers. If you are basing your architecture on the cloud and the assumption that users are accessing your software with a wireless device like a phone or a tablet, then there isn't much of an incentive to have audiophile SQ and features. firedog's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11550 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I had been planning on getting another one anyway so I could add another room synched to my main stereo. I figure as long as I have copies of LMS and Touch firmware, there is no reason a SB system can't work off a Local LMS server for many years. Yes, if MySB goes down, some features will be lost, but at least the multi-room streaming/synching, the random play feature, and general local music library serving features will remain. So as far as serving your local music library, it doesn't look like much will change for many years, as long as the HW doesn't break down. firedog's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=11550 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96191 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

There you can get a refurb for much less than $200. Compared to $500 or $600 for an iPad, I think this expended energy had a really good ROI! The $200 - $300 saved could buy a lot of new music!! :-). These products don't need to be better, and I'll accept what (I think) is your view that they're inferior. It doesn't matter, perception wins out. Yes. And this is coming from someone with a Linux (Vortexbox) based music server. I would say that something well above 95% of the population has no desire to use any OS that doesn't work totally by a GUI. In addition, using Linux limits your software and hardware choices. For instance there is some hi-end audio gear I'm interested in without Linux drivers, and the producers have categorically stated they won't be writing them. Most users like the simplicity of installing apps in Windows and Apple machines. In Apple everything just works. In newer versions of Windows, everything almost just works and there is a myriad of different programs for each purpose ranging from free to paid. Linux die-hards always talk about how great, easy, and user configurable Linux is - and that's true. But you have to be a geek. And before you start to argue, just admit to yourself: for about 98% of the population, using command line code, by definition, makes you a geek. That may not be your definition, but that's because you're a geek. The above mentioned 98% have never used command line code and don't want to ever need to. When you use a Linux setup and something doesn't work or can't be installed, you go to the net and search for a solution. I added tranck and album gain tags to all my files b/c I often listen in random mode and got tired of constantly adjusting the volume. In general, using the smart gain setting seems to work fairly well. However, I find that for some tracks (source is very loud?) I still fill the need to turn the volume up. In fact, on these tracks I have to turn the volume up massively to get the level I want. Not something I'm sure I want to do to my speakers. What I don't understand, that if I play the same tracks in a whole album setting (not during random play) I still notice the same problem. yes, it is supposed to be, and for some (many) it may be. But in the end, it is Linux, and a very specific version of Linux without the full GUI most distros of Linux have today. So if you have any issues you start needing to use Putty to login and write command line code. I switched over my WHS system to Vortexbox about a week ago.Had several issues with SBS not working correctly, and the backup function not working. All were resolved, with reinstalls/updates, help from the VB forum, and some logins and code writing with Putty. Definitely not for the true novice. If it works great for you, I'm happy. But just take a brief stroll through the VB forum and you'll see all the answers that say, logon to your VB server (putty) and use the following code... And just as a side comment, Logitech support doesn't support installs of SBS on Linux boxes (even though SBS works fine on it). They politely told me so and refused to help when my VB had a problem with some of the functionality of the SBS not working. BTW, now that I have everything working, I'm happy with VB and plan to keep using it. The SBS web interface and my Touch work just as they did with SBS on Windows. From a thread on another forum designed to show the differences between standard CD quality and hi-res recordings (same recording at different sampling rates and bit depth). To my ears, the differences are clearly there, just as described. If you can't discern them, then either your system isn't up to snuff or your ears need training. IMO, the vast majority of listeners, if played these tracks, would say they sound the same. They all sound good -they're from the same master. It's just that when you know what to listen for, you can hear the difference. from Bruce Brown's (Puget Sound) thread at http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?2938-The-Art-of-Listening-Hi-rez-music One thread (the one with the link here) lets you compare redbook to higher res versions of the same music. You can clearly hear the differences, as Bruce says below in the thread: Here is a file that we recorded at a native 24/352.8 It starts off with piano/drum. Do not listen to the music! Instead, concentrate on the sticks hitting the cymbal. Listen to the attack/transient of the initial hit. Listen to the tone and then the decay. Focus on just this one element. Listen to the sound of the cymbals in the room. How big is the room? What kind of space is this drummer in? Listen to the tone of the cymbal. Now... as you go down to 176.4, then 88.2 and finally 16/44.1, listen to these elements that I talked about above. Listen how the transient attack becomes more dull. Notice how the tone of the cymbal changes from crisp/pristine to dull and flat. Next, notice how the decay becomes shorter and shorter and the room becomes smaller and more dry with less reverb. To my ears, clear proof that the improvement with hi -res is audible. You can hear the differences in transients and decay, and you can hear that the room gets smaller at lower res. And please don't start telling me I imagined it all. -- firedog GIK Acoustics Room Treatments. Re: [slim] 24-bit audio (new article)
quote from the original article: but the loudness war has resulted in music squashed to within a few decibels of its life. Yes, and hi-res releases seem to generally be mastered without that. That alone makes them much more listenable. The recent uncompressed hi-res remaster of Band of the Run is a good example. I can definitely hear more detail and a warmer tone on the hi-res. Because of it not being overly compressed there's also a lot of dynamics. It invites you to turn it up and listen loudly, b/c it sounds better that way. Not true of the standard CD. This may all be do to better mastering and a lower noise floor, and not some inherent superiority of the format, but I don't care. I can hear the music better and it's more enjoyable to listen to. So I don't see how I'm being fooled by the hi-res release. I've got some jazz and classical releases that sound wonderful on CD. Can't really say the same for much redbook pop/rock. So the hi-res versions often sound better to me. I have no argument if you want to tell me that standard CD is all I need and can hear IF DONE PROPERLY. But apparently it isn't done properly most of the time. And I have no illusions that the music conglomerates are going to start putting out extremely high quality standard CDs. So the fact that CD's can sound as good as hi-res is irrelevant in practical terms, b/c those CD's don't exist, for the most part. Even the Boston Audio Society paper referred to acknowledges that one trend became obvious very quickly and held up throughout our testing: virtually all of the SACD and DVD-A recordings sounded better than most CDs— sometimes much better. So I'll keep buying hi-res. But before you call me silly and a fool, just change the name from hi-res to properly mastered and then we won't have anything to argue about. -- firedog Tranquil PC fanless WHS server running SqueezeServer; SB Touch slaved to Empirical Audio Pace Car; MF V DAC3, MF X-150 amp, Devore Gibbon Super 8 Speakers; Dual 506 + Ortofon 20 (occasional use); sometimes use PC with M-Audio 192 as digital source. Re: [slim] 24-bit audio (new article)
I brought this topic up over at computeraudiophile.com Got a thoughtful answer from music producer Barry Diament, who records in 24/192 and produces hi-res discs. He has an explanation for why 24bit does matter. http://www.computeraudiophile.com/content/debate-24-bit-it-just-audiophoolery#comment-72930 In forums he claims he can consistently pick out hi-res recordings on good systems, and he seems to have evidence to back up his claims. So maybe he is like the tested people in the study who scored 8/10 and 7/10. A small group with trained listening skills that can hear the difference. -- firedog Tranquil PC fanless WHS server running SqueezeServer; SB Touch slaved to Empirical Audio Pace Car; MF V DAC3, MF X-150 amp, Devore Gibbon Super 8 Speakers; Dual 506 + Ortofon 20 (occasional use); sometimes use PC with M-Audio 192 as digital source. Re: [slim] New Logitech MM STREAM Squeezebox Touch spotted !!
I emailed the NZ distributor that the original post came from. They replied that they will be selling it early next month - and will email me details when they know them. I don't know how high up NZ is on the world wide marketing chain of Logitech, or if it is an early release market. So take the early September date any way you wish to. Re: [slim] Windows Home Server
Hi- I installed LightsOut, but it didn't appear to me do be putting my WHS machine into a suspend or hibernate. When I login remotely to my WHS, I don't see a power option for suspend or hibernate. Does this mean my WHS can't go into suspend or hibernate? Or does it mean that SC running prevents it from going into a suspend/hibernate?
