this is part of the reason I uninstalled slimserver from my normal user account (not an administrator, but plenty of personal information), and reinstalled it under a dedicated slimserver user account. I then gave the new slimserver user read-only access to my music library and read-write to the playlists folder. if someone exploits a buffer overflow in the slimserver software they won't get very far. okay they could trash my slimserver installation and copy all my music, but they wouldn't able to access any of my other files or delete any music. -- kefa Mac OS X 10.4.8, Slimserver 6.5.0, Netgear DG834GT fw V1.02.04 Squeezebox 3 fw 64, Primare SPA20, Monitor Audio GR20 Squeezebox 2 fw 64, Denon UD-M30 SoftSqueeze, Cyrus 3, Monitor Audio R90 kefa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=421 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=30564 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] streaming slimserver to nokia S60 phone (N80)
I was one of those people looking out of a boombox version of the slimserver. I guess the problem with such a device is that it would need to be tethered by weighty batteries or a mains power supply. However, with a Nokia N80 or other S60 phone with wi-fi you can achieve a similar effect with the freely available open source internet radio player. The downside is that you cannot control the stream from the phone, and wi-fi reception from the phone is not particularly powerful. Nonetheless this is extremely cool. You need to install the both the Nokia open source Internet Radio application and Shoutcast engine from: http://opensource.nokia.com/projects/s60internetradio/ClientPage.html You will also need to create a playlist file (e.g. slimserver.pls) and copy to the /Shoutcast directory on the same drive as the installation. For me the file looks like this: [playlist] File1=http://10.0.0.10:9000/stream.mp3 Title1=Mobile Slimserver Length1=-1 NumberOfEntries=1 Also, if you want to be able to use AlienBBC (listen again in the bath is definitely where it's at!) you will need to make the modification to RTSP.pm as helpfully outlined in: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=26315 Don't forget to throttle the bitrate to your mobile once it appears in the players list and you will have a cool mobile radio you can use around the house! -- kefa Mac OS X 10.4.8, Slimserver 6.5.0, Netgear DG834GT fw V1.02.04 Squeezebox 3 fw 64, Primare SPA20, Monitor Audio GR20 Squeezebox 2 fw 64, Denon UD-M30 SoftSqueeze, Cyrus 3, Monitor Audio R90 kefa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=421 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=29421 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: SB3 has constantly low buffer.
Sorry about resurrecting an old thread but I am still having exactly the same problems as Cubed was originally. I think this is a problem with the pesky router firmware (I have heard bad things about the latest release) although I am using the very latest config (see my sig). I was messing around for ages trying to suss out the problem thinking it was to do with OS X, but I just remembered upgrading the router firmware just before making the switch from Linux and think this might be the problem. Rebooting the router seemed to fix the temporarily (not sure how long but it seemed okay for about a day last time). Looks like I might have to downgrade the firmware but it's a pain to have something else to think about. Don't want to go in to rant mode, but this is a pretty popular router (I didn't say good!) so there must be plenty of people with the same issue. Anyone out there who shares my angst? [slim] Re: IR Blaster - Xantech Interface
surely this is where we roll on with a wi-fi head such as nokia 770 (or the new mobile phones that are about to grace us with their presence) to control any ir devices via the squeezebox. With this in mind I have created a plug-in that enables any ir device (cd player, amp, tv, etc)to be controlled using the irblaster plug-in and output. at the moment the plugin requires the IRBlaster plugin to be installed with the appropriate remote *.conf files (these can be created for any remotes using the 'learning' facility available with the plugin from Slimserver v6.2.2). It also requires an HTML template file to be manually modified with the button layout and commands required for your remote, but this should be pretty straightforward if you have more had more than a sniff of HTML experience. Just modify the appropriate section in the following file: WebIRRemote/HTML/Default/plugins/WebIRRemote/index.html (scroll down to the comment lines that start with // for instructions) There are probably a few things to be ironed out, someone with plug-in expereience could probably point me in the right direction as to adding some appropriate checks and balances. However, for me it all works fine. To-do is to remove the need to edit the HTML template and make the layout manually configurable from within the web interface itself (much like within the IRBlaster plugin configuration). Anyway the following image should provide you with an overview of what's possible: [image: http://www.avdv70.dsl.pipex.com/webirremote/image.gif] and the the following url provides a download of the plug-in itself: http://www.avdv70.dsl.pipex.com/webirremote/webirremote.zip -- kefa Fedora Core 5, Slimserver 6.2.2, Netgear DG834GT Squeezebox 3, Primare SPA20, Monitor Audio GR20 Squeezebox 2, Denon UD-M30, Monitor Audio PMC703 kefa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=421 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22694 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Okay so this depends on being willing to browse album art, but here goes...I download all of my album art from amazon etc. Being a fan of flac I of course like to keep the original images as large of possible and intact (if only I could download the vinyl covers!). Then, to make my library as easy as possible to browse, I set the number of items per page to greater than the number of albums I have - e.g. approx 500. Problem is, that even if you set the thumbnail size to something small like 100 the browser chokes as it tries to load in and rescale 500 big images simultaneously...well, here's the trick... I download the original images in to each directory with the filename source.jpg. I then use the following script to scan the music directory and create rescaled cover.jpg images with a size of 100x100. find /home/kefa/music -type f -name source.jpg -print | while read path do echo "$path" folder=`dirname "$path"` cd "$folder" djpeg source.jpg | pamscale -xsize 100 -ysize 100 | cjpeg -outfile cover.jpg done Hey presto, now if you set the thumbnail size to 100 you can hit the 'Browse Artwork' link and after about 10 secs all 500 album covers have loaded up and you can seamlessly browse all of your album covers. -- kefa Fedora Core 4, Slimserver 6.2.1, Netgear DG834GT Squeezebox 3, Primare SPA20, Monitor Audio GR20 Squeezebox 2, Denon UD-M30, Monitor Audio PMC703 kefa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=421 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20138 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

sounds like you might also need max's plugin :-) - g'friends can often 'helpfully' turn the volume down! VolumeGuard.pm Do you ever find you're in the middle of listening to your favourite track when your other half suddenly announces that the volume is far too loud and turns it down for you? If so, this may be the plugin for you! VolumeGuard detects "unauthorised" changes in volume and stealthily restores the original volume. Changes are made in small increments over a period of time, so with any luck they won't notice! Volume changes can be authorised by pressing 0 immediately after changing the volume. Please note: there is currently no way of authorising volume changes via the web interface I'm open to suggestion as to how this could be done. I accept no responsiblity for any undesirable domestic situations that result due to the use of this plugin. :-) -- kefa kefa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=421 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=17862 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

This works for me. Hacked about RunScript Plugin to display the right messages and provide a delay (to prevent the g'friend shutting down accidentally while I'm doing something important!). I tried unscrewing the aerial on the server to simulate a poor network connection and low and behold the music dies and starts stuttering once it gets to 0%. To be honest I should have spotted this early on, but top marks to the excellent Slimserver support for helping me out on this one. Now all I need to do is work out how I can boost the performance of my Wifi connection. The wierd thing is that performance seems massively variable. Some times the buffer climbs rapidly to 100% and sits there okay for several minutes - then all of a sudden it can drop down and hover near 0% before stuttering. I live in C. London and wonder whether this could be caused by people in my block of flats using Microwaves ovens or DECT phones. I have run some tests with my DECT phone, but nothing is particularly conclusive. In the meantime, my wifi router has been elevated to better position away from pipes etc, reception seems better but by no means cured. Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Are there any recommendations to boost wifi performance other than moving the tx and rx closer together? -- kefa ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: SB2 playback freezes
neither of the bugs listed above seem to address the issue I am experiencing. (they relate to playlist not advancing) The problem I am experiencing is that songs seem to freeze mid-song or stutter as if the server is out of gas or the network connection is hokey. Checking the CPU or signal strength does not indicate any issues. All music is stored and played in native FLAC format over a wireless g network connection - AMD CPU, 1900+, 512 MB, - Redhat 2.6.10-1.766_FC3 - Perl v5.8.5 - SlimServer v6.0.3 - Squeezebox 2, Player Firmware Version: 11, MAC address: 00:04:20:05:a7:a0, Wireless Signal Strength: 100% Music seems to play fine for a period of time with absolutely no problems, say an hour, before going choppy. This is driving me up the wall - I have stopped using the SB for a month or so - it conked out embarrasingly at a party where I had nearly convinced a couple of other folk to buy a SB. Not so likely now! Things were okay with v6.0.1 and that this may be related to upgrading from SS v6.0.1 (to 6.0.2 and then 6.0.3 which both exhibit the same issues) and the corresponding SB firmware upgrades. I am reluctant to upgrade to 6.1 due to the reports that this problem is not resolved and the other issues related to this release. [slim] SB2 playback freezes
I am running SB2 (firmare 11), Slimserver v6.0.2 on Fedora Core 3. It was running fine as far as I can tell, but now playback seems to freeze periodically (every 45 mins or so). Running wirelessly but non-encrypted. All tracks FLAC and with native decoding within the SB2. The song title continues to scroll and the user interface continues to work. Pausing then unpausing doesn't help, but fast forwarding or replying the track unfreezes it. It's a strange one as I can't really reproduce the problem and can't find and hints in the debugging...I have d_remotestream, d_stream, d_stream_v, d_usage turned on. [slim] Re: executing binaries on a squeezebox
I live in a small flat, so I have tucked the (Fedora linux) Slimserver in the bedroom, so that it doesn't cause noise when listening to music in the lounge over wi-fi. What I want is an easy way to turn the Slimserver on an off from my Squeezebox. (wake-up on LAN, execute script to turn off, etc.). I don't want to leave my PC switched on all the time for a number of reasons (packed full of additional hot disks that are screwed in to the case: not sure the cooling really supports this!!, wouldn't want to give hackers the chance to take over the box by leaving it on 24/7, makes too much noise in the bedroom to sleep with it on). On the other hand, I'm lazy so I don't want to have to walk in to the bedroom to power the Slimserver on and off every time I want to listen to music.
