Re: [slim] Matter protocol and Squeezebox/LMS
As far as I can tell a full streaming or casting device class definition has yet to be agreed by the CSA. I suspect if and when the definition is agreed that it will end up as a lowest common denominator effort, at least initially. As Paul says, it's difficult to see what matter would bring to the LMS/squeezebox party in the short to medium term. Although matter has open source reference apps/firmwares and SDK, the actually implementation of a device that can be used in a real matter deployment requires 3rd party certification at a test house. Otherwise the device cannot be included the ring of trust required by the matter security model. It may be that only businesses or the incorporated commercial arms of the larger community platforms (e.g. NabuCasa for Home Assistant) will be able to get/hold certification. To either use LMS to stream to matter certified devices, or to allow something within a matter fabric to stream to our existing players will likely require some form of certified bridge. We may be dependent upon the willingness of 3rd parties to provide the necessary functionality for us, e.g. Apple may decide to bridge Airplay into a matter fabric so you could stream to any matter connected speaker, likewise Google & Chromecast. Of more immediate use would be if manufacturers of e.g. amplifiers/active speakers included simple matter compatible on/off switching & volume endpoints in their kit (as per the speaker class), it should then be relatively straightforward to link through a home automation platform (e.g. Home Assistant) to request that the end device was turned on or off in sympathy with the player stream, and maybe even control the volume. I think this is a 'wait and see'. Re: [slim] Large Backups on a Cloud
I use Crashplan as part of tiered backup strategy, and have done for past five years or so. It's $60 p.a. for unlimited encrypted storage for one PC, so a little cheaper than Amazon with current exchange rates, but backup specific. They will backup anything 'local' to a licensed machine, and provide a sensible background backup application (backup sets, file version retention including deleted files, etc.). Their app will also allow backup to other PCs including across the net, so if you have friend with a 24/7 server (their free version has this capability - you only pay for central cloud services). I've found it reliable and it's saved my bacon on more than one occasion. I find it quicker to find/restore the odd file from the cloud, than go to local backups. However, full disk restores are _much_ quicker from physical drives. In my server I use a disk pooling app with file duplication as well and have found that this has taken care of wholesale disk failures - Crashplan helps me when I've done something stupid and haven't noticed at the time (deleted the wrong file and so on). I wouldn't contemplate remote backup without a fast internet connection, and at the moment my unlimited fibre connection isn't so fast that I'd be prepared to do without local backups either. I'm not sure that the cloud backup would work well from a machine that is only on for short periods. I can probably let you have an SB1(Black) and an SB1G in silver - both wireless I think, but in varying stages of crustiness. I seem to remember that the soft feel plastic on the SB1 decomposed and I removed it with solvent, so definitely not mint/collectors item. If you're interested I'll dig them out and check if they're working/complete. You'll need to cover shipping from the UK, but otherwise they're free to a good home. Re: [slim] Automatically Powering Down a Dumb Amplifier
Squeezebox Server supports the xPL hope automation protocol through a built in plugin. Essentially this puts a network message out reporting the state of each of your squeeze players and you can configure home automation devices to respond to this including turning power on and off (and lots more). Options for end user switches include x10 devices (powerline and wireless), homeeasy/domia/bye-byestandby (in europe, not sure about US), and hopefully this year will see a Z-wave interface working. I use xPL connected devices to control amplifier power for 5 squeeze box players and also use a simple RF remote in the bathroom to control a squeezebox receiver/amp installed in the loft through xPL. You can achieve the same results using the similar xAP protocol and there's a squeezebox server plugin available for this. These approaches allow you to use plug-in devices (no home electronics), but will involve a greater set up cost (you'll need to buy some form of signal transmitter) and some configuration of (free) software. I think the investment is worthwhile if you are thinking about wider home automation and want to include your SB setup in the mix, but could be overkill for a single device switch. Re: [slim] Power control for older amp
I'm also using the built in xpl interface in Squeezebox Server to drive power switching. The xpl route allows you to drive a number of different switching technologies. I used to use x10 to do the switching, but now use RF devices (Homeeasy). I have five squeezeboxes with their amplification switched in this way. No soldering required, and the code base out there for xpl/x10 is more than mature enough to trust. -- lostboy lostboy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=125 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=82509 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Experiences with HDX1000 NMT unit?
I'm using the Popcorn A110 NMT with GBPVR. GBPVR runs on my WHS, as does Squeezecenter, and records TV onto the central server, also stores DVD iso's, Blu ray rips, etc. The Popcorn hour behaves exactly like a PC based client for GBPVR and plays everything I've thrown at it except a couple of really badly formatted Xvid files, which were fine once I remuxed them. For me the combination of GBPVR and NMT provides the same sort of flexible client/server behaviour for video that I enjoy with my squeezeboxen (1xboom, 1xSBC, 3xSB2, 2xSB1 at last count). My second NMT is on order now. Complexity of setup is about the same as getting a decent Squeeze install up and running with a few plugins, etc., (i.e. some prior knowledge required). The current generation of NMT units will not fully decode DTS audio, but some (Popcorn, HDX and eGreat currently) have licensed capability to downmix. Re: [slim] Warning, new firmware killed Squeezebox 2
FWIW - in the UK, consumer protection law places the requirement to fix upon the retailer. Your contract is with the retailer and it's their problem to provide the warranty (of course they can do this via the manufacturer, but its remains the retailer's problem to resolve). Any services or warranties the manufacturer offers directly are incidental to your rights vs the retailer. Bizarrely, if you go direct to the manufacturer without having agreed this route with the retailer, the retailer can then claim you interfered with the product and have effectively renounced your rights. [slim] Re: 6.5.0 and multi-disc set
OK - this got really confusing - I was seeing correct and incorrect behaviour from both settings. To try and bottom this out I set up a test system (6.5 on XP without Music Magic) which would rescan a small set of albums quickly. Essentially what I've found (and it seems to be repeatable behaviour with the test system) is that after you change the "Group Discs" setting you must independently trigger a full clear and rescan twice (each time allow the scan to complete). If you do this the number of discs shown with multi-disk albums is OK using the "Discnumber" tag alone. However the "Discc" tag needs to be present when you elect to "treat multi-disc sets as multiple albums" and you want a correct display of track number (1-n) in the first disc and to see "(Disc n of nn)" displayed along with the album name. Hope this helps Chris -- lostboy lostboy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=125 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27775 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Hi Michel, I upgraded to 6.5.0 (9916 on Win 2000) last night from 6.3.1 I'm seeing similar behaviour, but am still testing to track the precise symptoms down. With server setting for Group Discs "Treat Multi-disc sets as multiple albums" - I see the same behaviour as you for albums with the "Discnumber" tag set, but no "Discc" tag (first album displays trackno. on SB display, subsequent albums display discno.-trackno.). On multi disc sets that have the "Discc" tag present the display is as I would have expected. On 6.3.1 I didn't need to use the "Discc" tag so most of my multi-disc albums are missing it. My albums are flac tagged with MP3TAG. I'm also using MusicMagic. I'm going to switch the server setting and rescan and I'll report back. [slim] Re: Can Headphone Port be used to receive IR commands
No, but the built in IR receiver inside the SB can. If you simply want to repeat the IR signal back through the blaster there is a walk through in the Wiki. If you want to trap the IR command received to do things to your SB this can be achieved by mapping the appropriate code in the slim_devices_remote.ir file. If you want to capture the IR signal and send it somewhere else (e.g for home automation) you can use the xPL plugin to transmit the received IR codes to another xPL enable device. Lots of options, except mounting the IR receiver physically remote from the SB. There are plenty of commercial repeaters that will allow you to do that as well. Simon, My understanding was that the MusicIP premium licence was not time limited, but I've only had mine for 6 months so may be mistaken. You indicate that you can generate mixes from the slim interface so the MusicIP API must be operating OK, and this is only available if you have either a trial or full key. In SS there is a server setting in the MusicMagic section which specifies the amount of time between reloads of the MM database information. If it's set to zero the reload is disabled. [slim] Re: Problem with SDB3 .. no radio
Mark's advice to look at your network first is sound. Follow his pointers and if, having confirmed your network setup is OK, you still can't play radioio streams have a look at the following. A quick check on your ability to 'see' radioio's server from your slimserver pc is the first step. On the pc that is running the slimserver app (this is your XP box right?) open a command window (Start-Run, then type 'cmd' in the dialog box and click OK). In the command window type: 'ping radioio.sc.llnwd.net' and then hit enter. If you can connect to the radioio server you should see four replies with a time. If you get time-outs then you still have a network problem. If this is OK then open up winamp (windows media player won't help here) and ask it to play url 'radioio.sc.llnwd.net:8270' -this is the radioiobeat stream that slimserver connects to. If you can listen to the stream using winamp but not on your SB3 then the problem is with your slimserver/SB3 setup. Let us know how you get on and don't give up on the SB3, anything worthwhile takes a little effort :-) Chris -- lostboy lostboy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=125 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=18917 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: BBC Streams
As far as I can tell the order is presented exactly as it comes off the BBC website. The Radio 4 listen again and A to Z lists are certainly too long to scroll through quickly. The remote buttons are treated as numbers and you can therefore select the number of the entry in the playlist you want, e.g. if you go to Radio 4 listen again and then hit '1', '2', '3' in quick succession the entry shown will be number 123 in the playlist (set the SB to display two lines and this will show the position in the playlist). It's not too intuitive, but quite easy to use once you understand what's happening. I use a sort of manual binary cut approach to jump about the list by number until I'm in the right area and then scroll up or down to get the right programme. Using the remote buttons to pass a letter and jump to this place in the playlist would be a 'nice to have' enhancement. However, I think the work done to keep this really useful plugin operating as Slimserver moves forward, deal with the garbled radio 4 streams, etc. is clearly the best pay off of results vs effort from the AlienBBC team. Simon, simple stuff first, and apologies if you've checked all these already. Just say so if you have and we'll move on. a)Have you got a licence key into your MM app - integration with slimserver doesn't work until you have entered a trial licence key or full one. In MM check 'File' - 'Customize Options' - 'Server' and ensure that the API service is selected and running. Check the port number that is used for the API service, as slimserver will need to know what it is (default is 10002). b)MM must be started with the API service running before you start slimserver to be recognised and integrated. Maybe as insurance restart slimserver with MM already running after you've checked the settings below. c)slimdevices settings - firstly check that the music magic plugin is selected in 'Server Settings' - 'Plugins'. Restart slimserver if necessary - the 'server settings' - 'music magic' page should then become available - check this to ensure that the port number for the MM API service is the same. At the bottom of the main (first) 'server settings' - 'server settings' page - ensure that you have the radio button to use music magic selected (I didn't spot this one at first because I thought that enabling the plugin was sufficient). d)Slimdevices interface skin - I know that MM integrates OK with fishbone and default, but I haven't tested any others. Let us know how you get on. It is the K6713 available from CPC in the UK for £20 here http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=HK00755&N=411 (you may have to click on this link twice to get the right page) and info here http://www.velleman.be/common/product.Aspx?lan=1&id=9356 . The next problem would be how to get the right IR code output from the IR blaster. There is a pronto ccf for the velleman IR codes from remotecentral.com, but I don't know how you could put these codes into the plugin. [slim] Re: Options for remote power on of non ir amp
I use the xpl support in slimserver to send messages indicating squeezebox status (on or off) to an xpl manager app on my server (same box as slimserver). This sends X10 commands through the mains to an X10 switch connected to the amp's power. All the hardware is available retail and plugs in. The xpl apps are open source and need very simple scripting to set up the signal-response behaviour required. I've found this reliable, the amp switches within a second of the SB changing state. MC, this worked for me on XP/SP2 - Access 2003 1. Using the Administrative Tools / Data Sources option - select the System DSN tab and configure (or add another) a SQLite3 source pointing to your copy of the db. 2. Open Access and create a new blank database, use the menu options: File - Get External Data - and either Import or Link Tables (as you prefer). In the dialogue box that opens set file type to ODBC(). This should open a Select Data Source dialogue box. Select the tab 'Machine Source' - click on the source you configured in 1. Click OK (I used 1000 msec as a time out). 3. Select the tables you want to link to in the dialogue that appears and click OK - the tables you want will appear in the Access database control. 4. The relations between the tables will not come over, but if you link rather than import the table specific indexes and keys seem to be preserved (all are lost if you import). Ben, if you're looking for a user of the PowerLinc with xPL I think you're out of luck - as far as I know no-one has written an interface for it yet. xPL protocol depends upon the notion of a central controller rather than embedded intelligence in the interface, so even were an interface to exist it wouldn't use the memory features of the PowerLinc. [slim] Re: Remote trigger to power amplifier
It's a little simpler now, rleong and John Gorst on the xPL forum updated the xPL support in slimserver in May this year so that it can now explicity flag changes in the power-state of each squeezebox on your system, irrespective of where the change is triggered (e.g. trapping a button press won't capture an alarm clock event). But otherwise the approach I use is similar - I use determinators that send X10 commands whenever an appropriate power state change is detected. [slim] Re: Remote trigger to power amplifier
You might find it useful to have a look at the Xpl support provided in Slimserver. Xpl is a simple (open source) automation protocol - slimserver sends out Xpl messages to indicate the changing power state of the squeezebox, these are picked up by an automation manager application on the server (Xpl HAL) which then sends out an X10 mains line signal via an X10 to computer interface (hardware you have to purchase). This is picked up via an X10 switching device (more hardware you have to purchase) which controls the mains power to the amp. It works fine for me. If you want to know more please ask on the forum - I'll help and there are other Xpl users who are probably far more capable than I. [slim] Re: Synchronisation issues with local stream (DAB radio)
What bugs me is that it works fine between all three types of SB on my system for all but one type of source. It seems to me that there must be a clue in that somewhere. - thinking aloud then My recorded music (syncs fine) is all FLAC, and gets converted to MP3 for my SBG and to WAV for my SB1 (v good signal), whilst the SB2s get direct FLAC transmission. Internet radio sources are all streamed in MP3, which I think is true for Alien BBC (after conversion by mplayer). The source I have problems with is DAB radio, which I think streams to slimserver in MP2 and this is passed onto all the flavours of SB as MP2 (48kHz) - someone please contradict me if I've got this wrong. So is the sync just not setup to handle Mp2 or maybe the 48kHz stream? Can I set slimserver to convert MP2 to MP3 (setting in convert.conf?) to test this theory? Synch quality is very good using stored music, acceptable using internet radio streams, and unacceptable using DAB radio - the worst offenders are the SB1 and SBG which are about a quarter of a sec out of synch creating a real echo effect. Has anyone got any ideas about this? I looked up 'synch' in the forum and the bug list but didn't see anything similar. [slim] Re: Wireless ADSL router recommendations
Max, I'm currently using a WRT54G router with a DLINK ADSL modem. The router has an alternative firmware (DD-WRT at the moment). The two box soln has allowed me to upgrade from router from a DLINK 614 (B only) whilst keeping the modem - I now use the 614 as a B only access point for my SB1s, and the WRT54G as a G only access point (for SB2 and other kit). If ADSL 2 comes to my area it also means I can change the modem without needing a new router. The WRTG54 performance is dependent upon firmware quality - the h/w seems solid. I've never used stock Linksys (my first WRT54 was to act as bridge to the 614 to support my TiVo so needed new f/ware), and when I decided to go for the G for whole house I went for another WRT54G. DD-WRT f/ware seems solid, Satori required the occassional reboot (maybe once a fortnight). If you think you might need to do other things with your router - the open s/w base for the Linksys means that there's lots of community supported options out there, otherwise probably no good reason to choose it over anything else. You can upgrade the WRT54G to act as in client mode by using one of a number of free firmware upgrades (www.linksysinfo.com is a good way into this). [slim] Re: Slightly OT: Small Amplifier recommendations
Stuart, The line level outputs from an SB are sufficient to drive an AMP3 happily. The AMP3 has a single stereo input, so if you want to change sources without unplugging then a passive selector or preamp will be required. If you use volume control on the SB then all you need is the AMP3, PSU and some speakers. If you are feeding the AMP3 from a DAC and have the SB set to max (for best quality) then you will need some form of volume control before the AMP3, you can easily wire in a quality stereo potentiometer to do this. The basic AMP3 gain is either set by the input resistors and is fixed when you build it. I am using the AMP3 with an SB1 at the moment and I think the default gain setting for the AMP3 I set at build is maybe a bit too high (certainly for internet radio, but not for classical cds ripped to FLAC). I hope to receive my SB2 this week and will test this as well to select the gain before I build my next AMP3. Total cost - AMP3 £23 inc postage, PSU £15 (could be upgraded), Basic Case & HW - say £15, about 6 hours effort for first assembly (will get lots faster), and very tired hands from winding toroids. I think this is brilliant deal for the quality, but the little TEACs do look much prettier and save fiddling. The dealer links on the slim devices website mostly hold true, but the active dealers seem to be www.multitask-computing.co.uk or www.broadbandstuff.co.uk (who claim to have black SB2 in stock of both flavours) - you could also try www.advancedmp3players.co.uk (but check you're getting an SB2). Wasburn, go to the slimserver home page. Under the settings menu - select 'server settings'. You will then see an entry labelled 'playlists folder'. Type in the path of the directory where you want to save the playlists and select change. You may then need to 'rescan' (on the same settings page) to ensure that all your playlists are picked up. They will then appear in the Browse Playlists menus. While you're at it - have a look around the server settings menu tree and player settings menu tree. Most of the entries are self explanatory, and familiarisation with the way you can tailor slimserver to your needs will save you time later.
