Re: [slim] Marantz MCR603 and SBS
Welcome to the forum Atlantic, The beta version of Squeezebox Server had a dlna server built in at the moment and there is a 3rd party add on as well. The sever built into the beta is not complete as far as I know at this time but you may want to have a look in the 3rd party add on's to check on the other one. My experiences with DLNA have been with video only and have been somewhat frustrating to this point. The most difficult part of the standard at this point is finding good server software that does what you want. I wish you luck. Have you used inSSider or something similar to check you environment? How many networks are there nearby? Whats between the router and the device? Have you tried another device in the same place? Have you run network tests to see what you maximum throughput is with network test? What other traffic is your router handling (wired and wireless) when the drops occur? Whats the total throughput of your router? (see www.smallnetbuilder.com) I have an SB2 and an SB3 and neither has a problem. Even in the neighbor two doors down garage 80 feet away. Using the configuration you describe it should be connected to the "lan" portion of the router. I would also suggest that dhcp be disabled on the Zyxl so you only have one dhcp server on the network. At the same time I would give the Zyxl a static address. Give the Zyxl a static address where the last set of numbers is one number higher (if its less than 256) or lower than your BT Home Hub, (easy to remember it. Write it down somewhere too so you can get to it later when you need to.) and use BT Home Hub address for the Gateway and DNS addresses. While you are there I would change the wireless channel to 1 or 11 to see if that improves your wireless reception. Last but not least - buy a longer cable and remove the extension. Re: [slim] The competition is catching up and some surpassing Squeezebox...fast!
I am surprised no one mentioned the current crop of "do it all" Media players like the Asus O!Play and the WD Live. They are very capable players for not a lot of money. Mine will play everything my SB will, and video as well. It just lacks the ability to do it in the simple easy way my SB does. Lack of good support for playing play lists, genres, and album play ability make it look pretty poor at things the SB excels at, plus there's no SuperDateTime. I can't help myself here either Nas's are not an obsession. As people collect more digital photos, music, media etc, backup is no longer an option. Hard drives fail, recorded disc media has a shorter shelf life than what makes me comfortable. Huge amounts of hard drive storage are quite affordable (less than $100 a TB). Stick a couple in a $120 box, turn on Raid 0 and use it as redundant backup, If you can set up your Squeezebox a NAS should not be much of a challenge. Just remember how long it took to rip and tag your collection..and think about how you would feel if the drive its on failed. Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?
There are probably thousands of us who had no problem with the update. As I see it most of the issues are already being dealt with by the developers. There is one thing in all this that the software developers have no control over - your hardware, software, and your network. The whole PC-Apple thing is exactly the same as well. If we all ran Squeezebox Server on a set standard piece of hardware with a set standard OS with a set standard network there would be few problems. We don't though and any problems with either the computer, os, or network exposed by the new software is a chance to complain. Anything that does not work the way I want it to - complain! Blunder ahead with a system that was not stable in the first place and make it more unstable with new software - complain! Carefully make sure everything is working right, copy your preferences, uninstall (and restart if you have Windows) and install the update, make sure everything is ok and your plugins are all compatible and updated, move your prefs over, check it all again and everything works and then you don't need to complain. Re: [slim] My personal thoughts on Squeezebox concept.
I have an SB2 and an SB3. Never a day of problems with either. Had the first one up and running inside the first half hour. I have never felt like a beta tester. As a matter of fact I have seen many times when people with issues have their issue fixed before the next major release. That and the help you get here in the forums, all you have to do is ask (nicely) and you will get help. The open source software that drives the products has improved steadily from the first version I downloaded. It is now such a "Swiss Army Knife" of an application I am amazed every time they add something new. Plus there are plugins and SqueezeNetwork, and streaming podcasts, radio and more. I can say for myself, I have gotten fair value for what I purchased - and more as the software that drives the box continues to evolve. -- tedfroop "Good judgement is the result of experience ... Re: [slim] Recent Re-buffering problem
The difference is the amount of overhead used by wireless transmission. It was one of the goals of the wireless community as people found that with WEP the overhead was nearly one to one. That meant an 11 kbps connection only had about 6 kbps of usable bandwidth. WPA reduced the overhead and WPA2 reduced a whole lot more. What your computer that is running SqueezeCenter is doing when the stuttering starts is also at issue here. More and more I find programs install on my windows machine with "auto update" or "quick start" applications that start with my OS. Every time I install anything now I go to Start - Run- MSCONFIG and remove anything I don't need running from the start up. I once had a problem that I had to call MS support about and the problem ended up to be a start up program. Re: [slim] Advice on disk upgrade
Two suggestions, buy a Nas that will run two disks mirrored. There are several like the Linksys NLSU2 and Dlink DNS323 for about twice the price of a 500 gig disk. Do your homework though, some units have quite slow transfer rates. Do you have a spare pc? You could try FreeNAS from www.freenas.org With a spare pc it will run you the cost of the drives to get up and running. If you use Windows this (http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/synctoybeta.aspx) can be a useful tool for backup/data sync betweeen your pc and NAS. -- tedfroop "Good judgement is the result of experience ... Re: [slim] SB Classic wireless connection problems
Look for other devices on the same Channel as yours. If you see any try changing from the default (6) to either 1 or 11. I would also look into changing my encryption mode. WEP security can be cracked fairly quickly now days. Not only that but it uses a fair amount of overhead traffic between your devices. Check and see if you can use WPA or WPA2 with your router. Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point
Here's what you need to do next: Using a pc or laptop that is connected to the lan port on your router/ap find the Gateway address. To find it assuming your using windows - Start, Run, type CMD and enter. In the Command prompt window type: ipconfig /all and enter. Open an internet browser (IE, Firefox) and type in the address that showed as Gateway. Now you should have a login page for configuring your router/AP. The login and password should be in the manual that came with the router or on the Manufacturers support site. The support documentation will also be needed for the next step. You need to find the dhcp server and turn it off. You also need to find the WAN/Internet page and give your device an address. The address should only have one set of numbers that is different from the ones you got from ipconfig. So if as an example you got: address 192.168.0.100 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Gateway 192.168.0.256 DNS 192.168.0.256 Set the address of your AP as 192.168.0.(any number between 2 and 99) Once you have saved everything type the new address of your AP into your browser and save it as a bookmark/favorite, just in case you need to change any wireless settings down the road. -- tedfroop "Good judgement is the result of experience ... If you have ever tried tools like Netstumbler you will quickly find that hiding your SSID is useless. Tried hiding the SSID with all the wireless units I have had (for fun) and Netstumbler comes back with the SSID just as fast regardless of the fact its "hidden" or not. If a piece of free software does that then you are not protecting anything by hiding the SSID. The only thing hiding the SSID does is create connectivity problems. Wireless is a RADIO. Just looking at what they are selling and the price of it makes me wonder. Looks nice and simple until you ask the question - how do you get your music onto the thing? Once its there how do you back it up? Don't expect there to be a raid option either - Linksys released a NAS without raid in the last year. If your music is ripped and in digital format doesn't that make an iPod dock redundant? Then there's the audio quality. I have been buying audio products from Logitech for many years, Cisco - not so much. The thing that got me interested in the SB was the software. Re: [slim] Wifi sensitivity of Squuzebox 3
The antenna in the Classic (SB3) could be better. Most of what I have found is that it seems to be fairly directional, the orientation of the SB and router to each other make a difference. An improved antenna on the wireless router can help. Most manufacturers use the little stubby rubber antennas where the element is just a piece of speaker wire stuck inside. If you are frugal you could go to: http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html and build a reflector add on to try. Changing the orientation/placement of the access point and or Squeezebox can help as well. Having the wireless router above (higher on the wall, on top of a bookcase) improves reception. If possible placing the router in line of sight with the SB can help as well. If that doesn't work wiring it may be the only choice. There is an option here as well, PowerLine networking can work if running wire isn't an option. -- tedfroop "Good judgement is the result of experience ... MP3Tag may be a better solution. You didn't mention what format you music is in but some formats allow you to add the artwork to the tag. Nice and neat. You can organize any way you want - no folder.jpg needed and SqueezeCenter picks em up just fine. iTunes does three things that can cause problems. First off iTunes only attaches the artwork (and most of the tag information) to the first track in a disk. That is what it is but what if you only have track 6 from a disk? Somewhere in the tag it hides an if number that leads to an encrypted jpg. Re: [slim] Food for wireless thought
Yes wireless is a bit of "Black Magic" at the moment but there are things you can do to help it. -Construction Materials play a big part in reception strength. Steel studs, concrete, fireplaces, and brickwork are all poor materials for running a wireless network around. Steel reflects signals and confuses the heck out wireless. Dense stuff like concrete blocks the signal. Do a survey first - will it work where I am? - A good UPS or power filter. The filtering of line noise can help a lot. I have a wireless system set up for my mother in law and there are 27 visible networks where it is but it works just fine. -Get rid of any phones etc. in the 2.4 gig range, period. (and don't give the spread spectrum one to your neighbor - don't ask how I know.) -Spring for a new microwave. They are not all that expensive any more and better shielding and less line noise helps . -Place the AP or Router above the receivers if possible. The pattern of radiation from the antennas makes for better reception below than above. -Get a better antenna for your AP. A coathanger is better than most stock antennas which are no more than a 3" piece of wire inside a molded piece of plastic. Flat panel antennas work great for poorer reception situations as they can be directed toward the client. Always be prepared to wire your network. Wireless is a radio signal and under certain conditions it will not work properly. -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=50819 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Any suggestions?? -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38850 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iTunes playlists empty...
Did you do a search for other itunes music library.xml files? I had a total of four library.xml files at one point. Its weird but iTunes seems to change the location of the .xml in use. I finally loaded each .xml file in IE and searched trough until I found the one with playlist data as for some reason the playlist names showed up in more than one .xml file. -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38831 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] iTunes playlists empty...
Find your "itunes music library.xml" file. That contains your play lists and library. Next point your Slimserver to where the file is. (Server Settings, Basic Settings, Playlists Folder) While you are there make sure the "Use Itunes" radio button is selected. Two other things: SS can't use Smart play lists. If your music collection is not in the default location it is likely the itunes library file is in the default location. Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 will not reconnect to wireless network
Try turning your SSID broadcast back on. Turning it off so people can't find your network is a myth and makes it hard for devices to communicate sometimes. The other is to try wifi channels 1, 6, or 11. All the channels in between use more than 1 channel to communicate and if there is a problem using a channel its harder to figure out where the problem is. BTW - I had a problem with disconnects like you describe when I first got my Squeezebox but have not had the problem since firmware rev. 64 -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38211 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Linux is definitly the faster of the two for scanning and updating. Having ripped a few disks with Sound Juicer I can say high quality ripping is faster and simpler in Linux as well. -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33301 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: iTunes Playlists not updated automatically
Just a silly question, are the play lists in question normal or intelligent play lists? I was having the same problem but came to the realization SlimServer was picking up my normal play lists and not the intelligent play lists. -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=32183 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Crossfade help needed
It is as the name suggests - it fades one song out while it fades the next song in. Devide the crossfade time to know how far before the end of the current song it will start fading out the song and how long it will take to fade the next song in to full volume. -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31975 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: Problem with WinXP?
This may sound a bit out there but - Run MSconfig. Go to the "Startup" section. Uncheck any apps that were recently installed or that are starting in the tray that you don't need. I have had problems before with too many startup items and one of them conflicts with something else during the boot and no errors are displayed. If you are willing, shut down all but Slimserver and see if it works normaly. If it does add only the items you need back (testing as you go). -- tedfroop tedfroop's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3011 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=20365 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
