I have an Asus O!Play which is somewhat similar. Audio sounds ok but
you will quickly remember why you love your Squeezebox.
The network connected variety of "media player" is even nicer - you can
rip everything in the house and store the disks away.

Most N capable routers have much better range than earlier B/G routers.
With my router where it is I can run my SB3 in the neighbor 2 doors down

Wireless networks biggest enemy is lots of metal and big solid objects
between you and the router. Having your router near or in front of a
window that faces your garden will probably yield excellent results at
the bottom of the garden, even with wireless G.

Re: [slim] Marantz MCR603 and SBS

2011-02-21 Thread tedfroop

Welcome to the forum Atlantic,

The beta version of Squeezebox Server had a dlna server built in at the
moment and there is a 3rd party add on as well. The sever built into
the beta is not complete as far as I know at this time but you may want
to have a look in the 3rd party add on's to check on the other one.

My experiences with DLNA have been with video only and have been
somewhat frustrating to this point. The most difficult part of the
standard at this point is finding good server software that does what
you want. I wish you luck.

(And if you get frustrated, consider a Squeezebox as it does work with
SBS)

Re: [slim] SB3 constantly dropping connection

2011-02-19 Thread tedfroop

Have you used inSSider or something similar to check you environment?
How many networks are there nearby?
Whats between the router and the device?
Have you tried another device in the same place?
Have you run network tests to see what you maximum throughput is with
network test?
What other traffic is your router handling (wired and wireless) when
the drops occur?
Whats the total throughput of your router? (see
www.smallnetbuilder.com)

I have an SB2 and an SB3 and neither has a problem. Even in the
neighbor two doors down garage 80 feet away.

One big thing I found long ago though. Make sure your server is wired.
Why? I don't know but experience from having my server and player
connecting through wireless says a wired server is more stable.

Where is the cable plugged in to the wireless router?

Using the configuration you describe it should be connected to the
"lan" portion of the router.

I would also suggest that dhcp be disabled on the Zyxl so you only have
one dhcp server on the network.
At the same time I would give the Zyxl a static address. Give the Zyxl
a static address where the last set of numbers is one number higher (if
its less than 256) or lower than your BT Home Hub, (easy to remember it.
Write it down somewhere too so you can get to it later when you need
to.) and use BT Home Hub address for the Gateway and DNS addresses.

While you are there I would change the wireless channel to 1 or 11 to
see if that improves your wireless reception.

Last but not least - buy a longer cable and remove the extension. If
possible buy one long enough you can move the Zyxl closer to your
Squeezebox as that will (obviously) improve reception.

Sounds like the voice of experience there

I do a "rough property" survey about once a year when we renew the
house insurance. Just go through the house, stand in the middle of the
room and take pictures of everything, pull out the boxes of comics and
take pictures of all the hard to replace ones along with the pictures
of the full boxes, same for cd's, dvd's, albums and cassettes, pots and
pans, closets, dressers, storage boxes and totes and the garage.

Stick them all on a USB stick and put them in your safety deposit box,
update them next year as needed.

My offsite backup just means I won't lose my pictures or critical data
and when I get my cd's replaced I won't have to rip them again...

WD Live boxes will play iso's as will the Asus O!Play. Both are kind of
inexpensive and work quite well for streaming video. The box boots in a
few seconds and navigation is fairly simple. I don't think either
supports WOL though.

I have all my video ripped to iso or mpg and stored on a NAS. The only
thing that bothers me is that the O!Play lacks a Menu button for going
to the menu of the ISO. It won't be long though until someone fixes
that - the box runs linux and thus the firmware is subject to public
licence. Alternate firmware is already showing up

Add to all that - public domain movies. There is a ton of movies in
the public domain now. Download and watch free. If you have a pc based
dvr you can record and watch what you want when you want.

If there was a device Squeezebox device like my media player I would
buy one in a heartbeat. The combination of software and hardware in the
Squeezebox architecture is what makes it simple to use and endlessly
customizable as well.

My media box has no such simplicity. I know my wife has no problems
using the Squeezebox but I doubt she could figure out the media box or
use it a second time without written instructions.

I would love a single device but things being as they are, I will live

Re: [slim] The competition is catching up and some surpassing Squeezebox...fast!

2010-01-26 Thread tedfroop

I am surprised no one mentioned the current crop of "do it all" Media
players like the Asus O!Play and the WD Live. They are very capable
players for not a lot of money. Mine will play everything my SB will,
and video as well. It just lacks the ability to do it in the simple
easy way my SB does.
Lack of good support for playing play lists, genres, and album play
ability make it look pretty poor at things the SB excels at, plus
there's no SuperDateTime.

I can't help myself here either Nas's are not an obsession. As people
collect more digital photos, music, media etc, backup is no longer an
option. Hard drives fail, recorded disc media has a shorter shelf life
than what makes me comfortable.
Huge amounts of hard drive storage are quite affordable (less than $100
a TB). Stick a couple in a $120 box, turn on Raid 0 and use it as
redundant backup, If you can set up your Squeezebox a NAS should not be
much of a challenge.

Just remember how long it took to rip and tag your collection..and
think about how you would feel if the drive its on failed.

I know exactly how it feels

Sony should finally get it. When their cd drm fiasco is so well
documented it stands as a shining example of everything that is wrong
with drm.

Microsoft - will never get it. Ever. Neither will people who keep
buying - sorry renting music with restrictive DRM schemes that can be
turned off when M$ considers them no longer profitable. (See "Plays for

Re: [slim] Why so many rude comments?

2009-10-05 Thread tedfroop

There are probably thousands of us who had no problem with the update.
As I see it most of the issues are already being dealt with by the
developers.

There is one thing in all this that the software developers have no
control over - your hardware, software, and your network. The whole
PC-Apple thing is exactly the same as well. If we all ran Squeezebox
Server on a set standard piece of hardware with a set standard OS with a
set standard network there would be few problems.

We don't though and any problems with either the computer, os, or
network exposed by the new software is a chance to complain. Anything
that does not work the way I want it to - complain! Blunder ahead with
a system that was not stable in the first place and make it more
unstable with new software - complain!

Carefully make sure everything is working right, copy your preferences,
uninstall (and restart if you have Windows) and install the update, make
sure everything is ok and your plugins are all compatible and updated,
move your prefs over, check it all again and everything works and then
you don't need to complain.

Then you can ignore the rude people until they figure out thats not the
way to get help around here.

Re: [slim] Nice Job on 7.4

2009-10-05 Thread tedfroop

Moot has the right idea. Copy/move the prefs directory. I do it the
retentive way though and install, rename the new directory so I can put
it back in case of weirdness. Rename the prefs directory, check
everything out. If everything is ok then carry on, if not, put the
original directory back and try whatever you had a problem with.

Good plan to check that all the plugins are 7.4 compatible before you
start though.

Re: [slim] 802.11n technology

2009-09-24 Thread tedfroop

The whole thing comes down to this - upgrades to wireless will require:

a. All new firmware. (That stuff is not in the public domain so there
is no linux wizz kid hacking it)

b. An all new wireless receiver - no doubt not an off the shelf part
and in all probability a proprietary bus connector and card connector.

c. New router hardware for anyone with a draft n router that is not
compatible.

You want to do all that to carry a stream that will fit in 802.11b
bandwidth with room to spare.

Looks like an odd problem. Is it possible one device or the other is

Do You have another device that connects when you set the wireless to

That's one of the reasons you read posts and the guy says test it wired

should be prepared to wire everything, and hope that wireless will work

Re: [slim] My personal thoughts on Squeezebox concept.

2009-07-02 Thread tedfroop

I have an SB2 and an SB3. Never a day of problems with either. Had the
first one up and running inside the first half hour.

I have never felt like a beta tester. As a matter of fact I have seen
many times when people with issues have their issue fixed before the
next major release. That and the help you get here in the forums, all
you have to do is ask (nicely) and you will get help.

The open source software that drives the products has improved steadily
from the first version I downloaded. It is now such a "Swiss Army
Knife" of an application I am amazed every time they add something new.
Plus there are plugins and SqueezeNetwork, and streaming podcasts,
radio and more.

I can say for myself, I have gotten fair value for what I purchased -
and more as the software that drives the box continues to evolve.

Re: [slim] Recent Re-buffering problem

2009-04-16 Thread tedfroop

The difference is the amount of overhead used by wireless transmission.
It was one of the goals of the wireless community as people found that
with WEP the overhead was nearly one to one. That meant an 11 kbps
connection only had about 6 kbps of usable bandwidth. WPA reduced the
overhead and WPA2 reduced a whole lot more.
What your computer that is running SqueezeCenter is doing when the
stuttering starts is also at issue here.
More and more I find programs install on my windows machine with "auto
update" or "quick start" applications that start with my OS. Every
time I install anything now I go to Start - Run- MSCONFIG and remove
anything I don't need running from the start up.
I once had a problem that I had to call MS support about and the
problem ended up to be a start up program. The guy told me "If you
want less problems keep only what you really need in the start up".

Re: [slim] Advice on disk upgrade

2009-02-03 Thread tedfroop

Two suggestions, buy a Nas that will run two disks mirrored. There are
several like the Linksys NLSU2 and Dlink DNS323 for about twice the
price of a 500 gig disk. Do your homework though, some units have quite
slow transfer rates.

Do you have a spare pc? You could try FreeNAS from www.freenas.org
With a spare pc it will run you the cost of the drives to get up and
running.

If you use Windows this
(http://www.microsoft.com/prophoto/downloads/synctoybeta.aspx) can be a
useful tool for backup/data sync betweeen your pc and NAS.

2009-01-27 Thread tedfroop

Look for other devices on the same Channel as yours. If you see any try
changing from the default (6) to either 1 or 11.
I would also look into changing my encryption mode. WEP security can
be cracked fairly quickly now days. Not only that but it uses a fair
amount of overhead traffic between your devices. Check and see if you
can use WPA or WPA2 with your router.
For what its worth my old router was a DI624 and I never had issues
with it. Never used it with WEP though.

You need to connect to the router you want to be an ap with your pc or

When you open the router configuration look for a tab called LAN.
That's where you need to change the address.
Like I said - two addresses the same cause problems and thats why your

Re: [slim] Configuring a wireless router as an access point

2009-01-20 Thread tedfroop

Here's what you need to do next:
Using a pc or laptop that is connected to the lan port on your
router/ap find the Gateway address. To find it assuming your using
windows - Start, Run, type CMD and enter. In the Command prompt window
type: ipconfig /all and enter.
Open an internet browser (IE, Firefox) and type in the address that
showed as Gateway. Now you should have a login page for configuring
your router/AP. The login and password should be in the manual that
came with the router or on the Manufacturers support site. The support
documentation will also be needed for the next step.

You need to find the dhcp server and turn it off.
You also need to find the WAN/Internet page and give your device an
address. The address should only have one set of numbers that is
different from the ones you got from ipconfig.

So if as an example you got:
address 192.168.0.100
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.0.256
DNS 192.168.0.256

Set the address of your AP as 192.168.0.(any number between 2 and 99)

Once you have saved everything type the new address of your AP into
your browser and save it as a bookmark/favorite, just in case you need
to change any wireless settings down the road.

4mula1 got it right but I would assign a hard address to the device,
outside of your DHCP range. It helps keep everything else from
thinking its a router.

If you have instability like I did with my old Dlink 624 when I had it
configured an an AP then try a crossover cable between the device and
the switch.

Re: [slim] Why is SSID broadcast required to be on?

2009-01-12 Thread tedfroop

If you have ever tried tools like Netstumbler you will quickly find that
hiding your SSID is useless.
Tried hiding the SSID with all the wireless units I have had (for fun)
and Netstumbler comes back with the SSID just as fast regardless of the
fact its "hidden" or not. If a piece of free software does that then
you are not protecting anything by hiding the SSID.

The only thing hiding the SSID does is create connectivity problems.

Wireless is a RADIO. The only way to keep it hidden would be to line
the building its in with RF blocking material.

Re: [slim] NYTimes - Cisco to enter the Home Digital Entertainment Market

2009-01-07 Thread tedfroop

Just looking at what they are selling and the price of it makes me
wonder.

Looks nice and simple until you ask the question - how do you get your
music onto the thing? Once its there how do you back it up? Don't
expect there to be a raid option either - Linksys released a NAS
without raid in the last year.

If your music is ripped and in digital format doesn't that make an iPod
dock redundant?

Then there's the audio quality. I have been buying audio products from
Logitech for many years, Cisco - not so much.

The thing that got me interested in the SB was the software. It has
evolved continually because of input from these forums. I have no
doubt it will continue to evolve.

There is also no doubt Logitech has realized the value of community in
development of new SB products and features.

It has yet to be seen if Cisco will figure that out.

Re: [slim] Long term SB3 user: very happy!

2008-12-03 Thread tedfroop

My wife has always had difficulty putting cd's, albums and well just
about anything in any sort of order. (She gets bored of that kind of
thing very quickly.)

This used to cause some strife as I like things sorted and ordered -
easy to find what you want quickly.

Then a couple years ago I got an SB2 for Christmas. It was followed
last year by an SB3. Now there is nothing but happiness.

Time to dig out the Christmas music? Go to her music folder and create
a shortcut to the Christmas directory on the NAS, a quick rescan from
SqueezeCenter, and presto - happy wife.

When I want to listen to anything I can find it in a flash from nice
neat organized alphabetical lists of albums, or play lists, or genres,
or artists, or years, or whatever.

The CD's have been relegated to the spare room. All that's left to
digitize is my old vinyl and vhs tapes after Santa comes.

Now all I need is a Video Squeezebox should one come along.

No, but if you care to and have an ipod made before the "Classic" you

great for me - one flac library, no messing about with playlists,

Try to get as close as you can to line of sight to your router as well

Re: [slim] Wifi sensitivity of Squuzebox 3

2008-10-03 Thread tedfroop

The antenna in the Classic (SB3) could be better. Most of what I have
found is that it seems to be fairly directional, the orientation of the
SB and router to each other make a difference.

An improved antenna on the wireless router can help. Most
manufacturers use the little stubby rubber antennas where the element
is just a piece of speaker wire stuck inside. If you are frugal you
could go to:
http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template2/index.html and build a
reflector add on to try.

Changing the orientation/placement of the access point and or
Squeezebox can help as well. Having the wireless router above (higher
on the wall, on top of a bookcase) improves reception. If possible
placing the router in line of sight with the SB can help as well.
If that doesn't work wiring it may be the only choice. There is an
option here as well, PowerLine networking can work if running wire
isn't an option.

Re: [slim] Wireless N?

2008-09-27 Thread tedfroop

Can't the Apple Extreme 'n' work with PCs?

Yes it should work - possibly only at the G level. N is still a draft
standard and unless its draft2 it may not connect at n speeds.

Re: [slim] using itunes for album covers

2008-09-27 Thread tedfroop

MP3Tag may be a better solution. You didn't mention what format you
music is in but some formats allow you to add the artwork to the tag.
Nice and neat. You can organize any way you want - no folder.jpg needed
and SqueezeCenter picks em up just fine.

iTunes does three things that can cause problems. First off iTunes
only attaches the artwork (and most of the tag information) to the
first track in a disk. That is what it is but what if you only have
track 6 from a disk?

Somewhere in the tag it hides an if number that leads to an encrypted
jpg. Last but not least you need an iTunes account to get artwork and
your account email is something that gets added to your tags in some
cases as well...

Server to SBR. (The same way your music goes.) You need a minimum of
2000 @ 100% to consider flac.
Build some test files and give them a listen as well.

Need more information to help. Are your Boxes loosing their wireless
connection or are they loosing their connection to SqueezeCenter?
Anything else new on your pc? Did you recently do the SP3 update or
that was done before the problems began?
Do you have any other wireless devices? Are they connecting ok?
Did your SB3 update the firmware when you updated to 7.2?

Re: [slim] Losing wireless connection

2008-08-25 Thread tedfroop

I used to have the same kind of problem long ago - ended up wiring the
pc that SqueezeCenter was on and have not had the problem since. With
mine when the Squeezebox dropped it was a real pita to reconnect.

Newer routers will allow you to run full uncompressed streaming
wireless as long as you have excellent signal strength on all the
devices, I have done it with a wireless laptop, wired NAS (music
collection) and wireless Squeezebox. Routers like the Dlink dir655 not
only offer draft wireless N but also offer the improvements of multi in
multi out (MIMO) and higher signal strength.

Re: [slim] one album shows as four albums?

2008-08-24 Thread tedfroop

Part of the reason I moved away from Itunes - you can edit the tags but
it will, if its set to get tags and artwork from the store, change them
back again. Just as frustrating as M$ Media player which can do the
same.

Finally fixed it with dbPoweramp and a change from ALAC to Flac.

Wish I would have read
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/BeginnersGuideToFileFormats
first.

Asking questions in the Ripping and Tagging forum is a good thing to do
to - just read the Beginners Guide Wiki first, it has been written from
experience.

Re: [slim] Multiple copies of the same song, and other library issues.

2008-08-07 Thread tedfroop

Or you could Google for something like this
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/free-software-downloads/organize-mp3-file

Another method that comes to mind is to seperate by file type, use
iTunes to organize each type in a separate folder. Add any missing
files to the directory you want to use for SqueezeCenter, or better -
rerip them in flac.

Can't say been there done that but I do keep multiple libraries in
FLAC, MP3, and ALAC. It would be a real pain to keep updated if it
wasn't for dbPoweramp.

Re: [slim] Food for wireless thought

2008-08-07 Thread tedfroop

Yes wireless is a bit of "Black Magic" at the moment but there are
things you can do to help it.
-Construction Materials play a big part in reception strength. Steel
studs, concrete, fireplaces, and brickwork are all poor materials for
running a wireless network around. Steel reflects signals and confuses
the heck out wireless. Dense stuff like concrete blocks the signal. Do
a survey first - will it work where I am?
- A good UPS or power filter. The filtering of line noise can help a
lot. I have a wireless system set up for my mother in law and there
are 27 visible networks where it is but it works just fine.
-Get rid of any phones etc. in the 2.4 gig range, period. (and don't
give the spread spectrum one to your neighbor - don't ask how I know.)
-Spring for a new microwave. They are not all that expensive any more
and better shielding and less line noise helps .
-Place the AP or Router above the receivers if possible. The pattern
of radiation from the antennas makes for better reception below than
above.
-Get a better antenna for your AP. A coathanger is better than most
stock antennas which are no more than a 3" piece of wire inside a
molded piece of plastic. Flat panel antennas work great for poorer
reception situations as they can be directed toward the client.

Always be prepared to wire your network. Wireless is a radio signal and
under certain conditions it will not work properly.

Re: [slim] The 'Duet' is here

2008-01-06 Thread tedfroop

When I saw the Jive project I could have almost predicted this "Music
Anywhere" product would be next.

I was hoping the Duet remote would be an add on to something like the
current design but at that price its not likely I would buy one when
for the same price you can buy an Asus EEE PC.

The other problem is the practicality of the whole thing. I use my
Squeezeboxes at parties, poker games, and the like all the time, and if
something happens to the remote - no big deal, take it apart and wash it
out, something I doubt you could do with the Duet remote.

[slim] Slimserver Remote Access.

2007-09-30 Thread tedfroop

I have a problem when I remotely access Slim Server 6.5.4. If I am
connected remotely and make a change to the currently playing play list
and the server moves on to the next song before I end the remote session
or if I access SS remotly a second time the right (now playing side)
Slim Server screen goes blank. Within 2 or 3 songs the now playing
display on the Squeezebox goes blank but continues playing. If it is a
random playlist selected within Slim Server the player will continue to
the end of the selected songs and quit.

To clear the problem I have to shutdown Slim Server completely and
restart it, then clear the now playing list and then sometimes restart
Slim Server again after that.

My network is set up with the Slim Server running on a Windows XP
machine (wired) ip 192.168.0.100.
The Squeezebox, 192.168.0.101 is connected to wifi ssid Squishy
(192.168.0.4) channel 1. (Nothing else is connected to that AP)
The machine I do remote from is my laptop 192.168.0.102 connected wifi
to ssid Mittens (192.168.0.1 and dhcp server.) channel 11.

I have removed and reinstalled Slim Server to make sure its clean. I
have no connectivity problems with any of my PC's or Wireless. There
are no firewalls running inside the network.

Any suggestions??

Did you do a search for other itunes music library.xml files? I had a
total of four library.xml files at one point.

Its weird but iTunes seems to change the location of the .xml in use. I
finally loaded each .xml file in IE and searched trough until I found
the one with playlist data as for some reason the playlist names showed
up in more than one .xml file.

Re: [slim] iTunes playlists empty...

2007-09-30 Thread tedfroop

Find your "itunes music library.xml" file. That contains your play
lists and library. Next point your Slimserver to where the file is.
(Server Settings, Basic Settings, Playlists Folder) While you are
there make sure the "Use Itunes" radio button is selected.

Two other things:
SS can't use Smart play lists.
If your music collection is not in the default
location it is likely the
itunes library file is in the default location. (for Windows, My
Documents\My Music\iTunes )

Re: [slim] Squeezebox 3 will not reconnect to wireless network

2007-09-10 Thread tedfroop

Try turning your SSID broadcast back on. Turning it off so people can't
find your network is a myth and makes it hard for devices to communicate
sometimes.
The other is to try wifi channels 1, 6, or 11. All the channels in
between use more than 1 channel to communicate and if there is a
problem using a channel its harder to figure out where the problem is.

BTW - I had a problem with disconnects like you describe when I first
got my Squeezebox but have not had the problem since firmware rev. 64

- Linux

I am running both right now - dual boot XP and Ubuntu. Linux is
definitly the faster of the two for scanning and updating. Having
ripped a few disks with Sound Juicer I can say high quality ripping is
faster and simpler in Linux as well.

This may sound a bit out there but - Run MSconfig. Go to the "Startup"
section. Uncheck any apps that were recently installed or that are
starting in the tray that you don't need.

I have had problems before with too many startup items and one of them
conflicts with something else during the boot and no errors are
displayed.

If you are willing, shut down all but Slimserver and see if it works
normaly. If it does add only the items you need back (testing as you
go).
