I also have a Bifrost and it clicks when changing from standard to hires. So having a playlist mixing them, would result in clicking. But staying within the same sample rate playback from my touch via bifrost is perfect and without gaps or clicks. I also have a Rapberry Pi running Picoreplayer connected to the Bifrost, changing to hires or standard does not cause any clicks or interruptions. So this might also be an option. This way LMS uses album gain if I'm playing a complete album and track gain if I'm doing random play). You should check to see that you have both album and track gain in your file tags. You can test all this by simply turning OFF replaygain in LMS > Settings and playing one of these gapless live albums and seeing what happens. Otherwise I'm out of ideas. Do the FLACs play on other players (winamp or foobar2000)? Do you have ReplayGain turned on in LMS? If so, you need to make sure you are using "Smart Gain" (so that when you play an entire album it uses the same album gain RG for every track). If the RG value per track is changing and you are using those values, you'll notice a change in volume between tracks that could be interpreted as a "break". garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

My Squeezebox Boom has been the main conduit for music in my home for some three years years. I have several of them throughout the house, all synced with each other, and it's been great. My server runs on OS X Lion. However recently I have noticed a new problem. SamS;537480 Wrote: > Good tip about the tags, I will need to do some more research. If you just run the files through the FLAC command line decoder, you will of course lose the tags. What's needed is to find some sort of front end to FLAC that not only preserves the tags, but also allows you to specify additional parameters on decode (ie. so you can add the *--until=-4608* option). You can usually bank on Foobar2000 having some way of doing what you want. But although it preserves the tags when convertion FLAC to FLAC, I can't find any way of adding additional decode options. Maybe CUETools will do the job, but I've never used it. SamS;537480 Wrote: > I still don't know if I should be using the Compression Offset feature > in EAC? As far as I can tell, this option is relevant only when you're using an encoder that introduces an offset (eg. some dubious MP3 encoders might do that). On playback, the final N samples are lost, and so EAC adds the extra silence so that what gets lost is the added silence. In other words, EAC is attempting to compensate for dodgy encoders. But FLAC does not suffer from this problem, and so the option should not be used. Perhaps later versions of EAC are aware that FLAC is OK and so don't add the extra silence even if you have the option switched on. But my gut feeling is that to be safe you should switch it off. Go to *Compression Options | Offset* and make sure it's unchecked. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Thanks Clive, yep pull those files down ;-) I think I need to use CUETools. Good tip about the tags, I will need to do some more research. Although my problem still exists, I really appreciate you being able to confirm it was the '4608 samples of silence' problem. I could not have diagnosed that myself. I still don't know if I should be using the Compression Offset feature in EAC? Luckily the problem no longer exists with current rips. Re: [slim] Gapless playback with FLAC
Clive, thank you so much! I had done a bit more investigating last night, and read about the 4608 samples of silence appended to tracks, so this has happened to others before. My drive model is Samsung SH-S183L. However, I no longer have this problem. Any rip I've done since about mid-2008 does not have this problem. I did a bit of digging by file date to find when this problem stopped. I don't know what would have happened at that time, except possibly an upgrade of EAC. Re: [slim] Gapless playback with FLAC
good analysis clive. Although not a good answer for Sam given this means that many of his CDs need to be reripped. I'm not an EAC user (dbpa for me), but the drive offset issue seems plausible. And the "fill missing offset with silence" sounds dangerous to me on its face (but again, I have no knowledge of the settings). I suppose the only partial good news is that the extra silence is irrelevant for 99% of his rips as they already have silence between tracks. So there is probably only a very small number of rerips needed (live albums and a handful of studio albums). p.s. Sam, I feel your pain. A number of years ago I ripped thousands of my CDs to high quality mp3. I didn't know enough and I've since been on a project to rerip everything to FLAC. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

As for a "diagnosis", all I can say is that there is definitely a brief period of silence (4608 samples, 104 millseconds) at the end of both tracks. Cutting out those samples from "Speak To Me" results in a perfect seamless transition into "Breathe". How this extra silence got into the files I can't say. 4608 samples is much larger than a single CD block (588 samples). Another intruiging thing is that when you rip a track from a CD, the resulting file really should be an exact multiple of 588 samples. These two tracks are not. If you cut out the extra 4608 samples of silence, they are then 1 sample over an exact multiple of 588. I'm guessing here, but perhaps some earlier version of EAC did something strange when the "fill missing offset with silence" was switched on. 4608 is not an unreasonable figure for a CD drive offset - it's fairly high, but certainly not unknown. Sam: can you tell us the make/model of your ripping drive? The CD Freaks website has a database of known offsets for a lot of drives. If yours is in there and has an offset of 4608, that would be a smoking gun. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

And you don't know what your setting is, so the first thing I would do is look for this. Go into SbS web control, then settings>Player>Audio>volume adjustment and see what your settings happen to be. I recommend SMART GAIN if you have replaygain tags in your files. Do you? But to at least test things, set this to OFF and then try to see if you have these track transition issues. If you don't have replaygain tags, you can use FOOBAR2000 or dbpoweramp to add track/album replaygain tags to all our FLAC files in a batch approach (a few clicks then let it run) -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Gapless playback with FLAC
Thanks for your reply. I don't have any volume adjustment or leveling turned on, that I am aware of. I can't even remember where that setting is inside of the SS Web Control ;-) I tried to do everything by the book in EAC, very purist settings. Re: [slim] Gapless playback with FLAC
You shouldn't need to rerip, as the approach you used should automatically get you gapless where it is supposed to be gapless. CUE sheets, etc. are NOT needed for proper gapless. One question, what is your volume adjustment/leveling set to? Off, album gain, track gain, or smart gain? If track gain, for example, the player is adjusting the volume of each track independently. This can often lead to noticing the transition from one track to another because of slight shifts in volume. Make sure it is set to either OFF or SMART GAIN. Smart gain uses track gain when playing a mixed album playlist and album gain when playing an entire album. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Gapless playback with FLAC
Hi, I realize that this subject might (?) have been beaten to death already, but I'm really concerned now that I found out my set-up is not acting correct when it comes to gapless playback. I have about 2000 CDs ripped via EAC to FLAC, no CUE sheets. Playback is to Transporter, SB3, Boom, etc via SS7.5. For seamless albums like Dark Side of the Moon, there is a little break in between songs. Not a pause, but the music does not line up perfectly during the transition. I've been thinking all these years that it was normal, and since there was no "gap" per se, this *was* gapless playback. Shrug... I guess not? I'm told these transitions should be as smooth as on the original CD. Please tell me this can be corrected somehow. There's no way I'm going to re-rip 2000 CDs :( -- SamS SamS's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9261 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77561 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Gapless playback
Although I don't really like the WMA format, I'm interested in figuring out if it's really gapless or not and what it would take for us to support it. -- andyg andyg's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3292 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53590 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
