[slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!
All: Thanks to the heroic efforts of Brandon B., one of our engineers, we've completed the migration from Kwiki to Media Wiki! It's not nearly as broken as the previous attempts at migration, so we've made it active effectively immediately. There is still some work to be done, so anyone who had previously volunteered is more than welcome to dive in and start editing! If you hadn't volunteered, you're still welcome... we can use all the help we can get. There's a page detailing known issues, as well as a Style Guide, but neither is complete and you're free to contribute anywhere. The new wiki is directly available at http://mwiki.slimdevices.com. Thanks in advance for your patience as we complete the migration and for you help in getting us there. -=> Jim -- JimC "well, she wasn't all of that, but she sure was some of that." -- BKlaas' college buddy JimC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9428 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!
Jim, is there any way to break apart the run-on words used in the previous wiki? Things like: RunningMultipleSlimServers .../index.php/RunningMultipleSlimServers Some kind of global search and replace (a lot of them, needless to say)? Looking at Wikipedia, I gather that this url, if spaces were present, would be .../index.php/Running_Multiple_Slim_Servers It might be a good idea to set up a robots.txt file to keep search engine spyders out of the wiki for a little while, particularly if page URLs will be change or reorganized significantly. http://mwiki.slimdevices.com/robots.txt -- JJZolx Jim JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

BKlaas used to be a media wiki admin, so I'll see if he has any input on making that change on a global basis without leaving a lot of links behind. Good suggestion on the robots.txt file. Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!
I've updated the plugin pages due to two isses: 1. mailto links looked like this: [Firstname Lastname mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] While they need to look like this in MediaWiki: [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Firstname Lastname] I've changed this in the plugin pages, but there might be other places. 2. Some external links wasn't converted correctly, especially when there was several external links in the same sentence. They looked something like this: [userfriendly link name http://example.com] Or like this: [http://example.com/firstlink.html] some other text [userfriendly name of last link http://example.com/lastlink.html]userfriendly name of first link. The result is that urls are shown directly in the page instead of showing the user friendly name of the link. This has been converted in the plugin pages to: [http://example.com userfriendly link name] And: [http://example.com/firstlink.html userfriendly name of first link] some other text [http://example.com/lastlink.html userfriendly name of last link]. I've only corrected these issues in the plugin pages, but there might be other places so I thought I'd post them here so others could look out for the same problems in other pages. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Whats the best way of adding navigation links amongst a group of pages (eg the BeginnersGuide, or Plugins)? In the old wiki there was the (admittedly very crude) list of backlinks on the left, which made it easy to get back to "parent" or related pages. Is there a way of adding navigation links on the left, locally to a page? Or is there a recommended style for adding navigation links at, say, the top of a page? A quick question (apologies if this has been covered elsewhere): are there any thoughts as to how WikiRadio can be supported in the new Wiki. Also, I noticed that when you create an account on the wiki you are presented with the message "Your account has been created. Don't forget to change your Squeezebox preferences." Don't think wikiradio has been worked out yet... At present you can't upload anything other than image files the wiki so we can't host opml files on it. I would like to think we can have a wiki like interface for submitting radio station links but it would be preferable if Logitech hosted a script to index them so wiki radio did not require a plugin. -- Triode Triode's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

As I mentioned before, it has gotten especially bad since 7.0 was released and there's still a lot of old info around that hasn't been updated or removed. I understand that we can all just jump in and start fixing these things, but it seems like some sort of organized triage would be useful. Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!
One thing I just noticed doing the hardware overview is that some of the product specific pages have pretty long names. For example, hotlinking the word "Squeezebox" is going to be a pretty common requirement - but it needs this mouthful : Code: Everyone loves a [[Squeezebox3rdGeneration|Squeezebox]] Any way we can make that a little easier? I'm assuming the reason SqueezeBox was used so much in the old wiki was due to auto-linking of camel case words. Also - would be good to make the formatting help link go somewhere (even if it's just http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page :) -- radish radish's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=77 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Ah, ok, see what you've done now. I found it confusing at first as when you click one of the category links you get taken to a page that doesn't exist (the page for that category). I can see that being useful for someone like you editing some pages and wanting to keep track, but you weren't planning on leaving it like that, were you? As a trial of the concept I've created a category for "Beginners Guide Pages" with some simple content so its more user friendly. I think I still want a link to the "parent" page from each child - otherwise its two clicks to get back, which is a bit annoying. If someone at Logitech sees this, it would be great if the old wiki content could be available somewhere a bit longer. It's sometimes good to be able to look at the previous wiki page when you are correcting the page in the MediaWiki, especially when you are correcting links that have gone bad in the conversion. Re: [slim] New Wiki Open for Editing!
Does anyone have a suggestion for a naming strategy of pages that is related to setting up a configuration with various third party plugins ? Maybe the actual page name doesn't matter and we should just put them in a specific category instead ? In that case, any suggestion on a good category name ? Maybe "Configuration Examples" ? As an example a page that describes how to setup support for ratings in SqueezeCenter: http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Setup:_Rating_support_in_SlimServer The complete list of pages I like to move is those listed on this page: http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer_Configuration_Examples The above mentioned pages currently have large focus on my own plugins, the idea with moving them to the slimdevices wiki is to make it possible for other plugin developers to add more information regarding their plugins that is useful in the context and also to make it possible for users to edit the contents based on their experience. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=46350 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I'm not sure if we have a strategy for navigation yet, or a clear structure to work with. I can see, for example, quite a lot of orphaned pages but really don't know where they should be put: I think someone needs to take some leadership (with consultation here, hopefully) on this. I think your idea of using a Category in that way is a good one (it will help people find similar pages in the darkest corners of the wiki!) but I don't think we should be relying on Categories as a main navigation route.
