[slim] Nokia N800 Player Selection Problem
I am having difficulty with the selection of players in the the Touch and Nokia 770 skins in the version 7 Slimserver/Squeezecenter. Each of the players is present in the drop down dialogue at the top right of the screen, but when I click on the player I want to control, the name remains and the box appears with a highlight around it, but the player cannot be controlled. In other skins such as Fishbone or Handheld, the player selection seems to work fine. Javascript is enabled on the N800. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
The N800 has a version of Helix RealPlayer bundled so can play many internet radio formats. Check here for some details. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070109-8575.html An initially undocumented feature is a real FM radio (earphones provides the antenna) - the s/w to enable the radio is now available form Nokia as an update. There is also a version of mplayer ported to the N800 which can be used to play most internet radio formats. I believe somebody has ported a Gmyth player for mythtv but video is still not great (do a google on Gmyth and N800). You can check out http://www.maemo.org for the 3rd party activity. -- bpa bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31398 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nokia N800
Hi John, Thanks for the info. I really appreciate knowing everything you have mentioned about the Nokia N800. You mentioned Select Radio souldn't work because of the Linux system...do you if other software from download.com can be downloaded and instaled on the Nokia N800 as long as its Linux software ? Does it only support an mp3 player or does it also support Windows Media Player and Real Player ? I would be interested to know if it supports watching live TV from its own mp3 player or other players like VTuner, Replay Radio, etc. Do you know if its possible to listen to XM or Sirius ? I believe I read some where it does support Real Rhapsody. Thanks, Dave - JohnSwenson;210644 Wrote: > I got a N800 last week, primarily to control slimserver. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
I got a N800 last week, primarily to control slimserver. It works great with the 770 skin, I'm very happy with it. The speed of controling slimserver this way seems almost instantaneous. Its way better than using a laptop which is heavy, cumbersome and gets hot! The N800's battery life is quite good. If doing continuous web surfing switching from page to page you get about 4 hours. If you are continuously on the webbut spending time reading pages etc it can shut down the wifi transmitter and this saves a lot, in this mode its between 6-7 hours. For controlling slimserver where you occasionally pick it up and push some buttons its somewhere between 4-10 days! Web browsing is pretty nice, its a wide enough screen that you can see most web pages without scrolling, but some are pretty small text. About half the time I wind up zooming in a step so I can read the text. The zoom in and out works vey well so don't hesitate to use it. I've wound up carrying this thing with me all over the house, I can read some forums while eating breakfast or do a little research when I wake up in the middle of the night and don't want o get up and go to the "big computer". Typing is not so great so I would not recommend writing a novel on it unless you have an external keyboard. It has a stylus keyboard and a "thumb board" which pops up when you use a finger to point at a text area. This works pretty well for entering text when holding the tablet, but the thumb board covers up the whole screen so you can't see the area of the screen where its going. The stylus board lets you see where you are entering the text. It also has handwriting recognition but its nots so great, I just usually use the stylus or thumb board. As to your question on Select Radio, it will not work on the N800, its designed for pocket PCs which run a completely different operating system. The N800 runs linux. This means there are quite a few third party linux programs ported to it and many coming all the time. Since it has access to the internet it works well for normal internet radio streaming. You can access them just like you would from any other omputer connected to the internet. There is an application called streamtuner specifically designed for keeping lists of internet radio stations you want to listen to. It works pretty well, but I actually prefer using slimserver for internet radio access. The speakers on the N800 are not what you would call audiophile quality, and they don't go very loud. But if you are a couple inches away its not too bad. It does have a UPnP player so you can use it with a UPnP server if you have one. I've not played with the video streaming. It supposedly is terrible with youtube. It does a pretty good job with local avi files etc. Since it has two SD card slots you can put some videos on flash and play them on the device. Currently it can't run softsqueeze, but it should be possible to port squeezeslave. Any more questions I can answer? Re: [slim] Nokia N800
OK, Now I've had a chance to use our installation in anger one thing which is driving me mad is the fact that if you hit the playlist icon to pull up the current playlist and hit the play icon beside one of the tracks it takes 5-6 seconds for anything to happen. The CPU/memory load/screenshot app shows the CPU is 100% loaded druing this time, and while it happens almost instantly on a windows PC it does show that iexplore uses CPU more heavily during this process. I've checked and there's nothing wrong with my installation - I did a clean install of the shipping 6.5.2 and all of the N800s (except mine) have clean ROMS with no patches. Is there a way of speeding this up? Re: [slim] Nokia N800
FWIW, my best guess is I think your mem leak issue was an OS issue, and nothing to do with Slimserver or my skins. The playlist and now playing pages on Nokia770/Touch is where the largest amount of divergence from standard slimserver skins is, particularly with the controls. It's no surprise that MusicMagic/IP/Whatever it's called doesn't work there, because it's all custom code. If it helps, take a look at the BLOCK ajaxplaylistcontrols in the file status_list.html in the Nokia770/ folder. That's where those controls are generated, so that's where you'd need to put a hook for MusicMagic support. I said it before, but I don't run MusicMagic/IP, can't get it to work in my Linux environment, and thus am not going to be a big help in fixing it directly. Patches welcome. cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas "the Nokia770 skin guy" http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31398 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nokia N800
Ben, In order to clean things up I re-installed a clean copy of the html and made a copy the Nokia770 folder - called spookily N800! The only alteration I made is to re order the icons on the home page. I also re-flashed to a clean copy of the 2007 image, patched the kernel to support SDHC cards and set up dual boot onto a brand new Adata 8Gb card. Everything seems to be behaving now. I've looked through all of the html in the folder and I can't for the life of me work out how the music-magic plugin is being picked up, and why it appears on the now-playing list of fishbone but not on the Nokia skin. In fact it seems that the ONLY pages of the Nokia skin that don't display the music magic icons are the status and current playlist pages. While with the unit connected to my main HiFi I can use the IR remote, I can't with the 3 Squeezeboxes I'm installing next week for whole house audio as they are going to be hidden in a media rack and controlled soley over WLAN using N800s. Could someone who understands how the html fits together better than me and can install MusicMagic see if the code can be patched? I'm at a loss I'm afraid. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
I don't know what is going on with the memory leak either. It appears to be almost random in the way it appears. One thing for certain is if I take the SD card out the N800 will run for days, if I put it in eventually the browser starts gobbling up memory. If I ever get to track it down further I'll let you know. I don't have two identical SD cards so I can't leave two running side by side. As to MusicIP. If you list albums/artists or tracks you get a MusicIP icon to make a mix. There isn't one on the status page (and I'm not sure that there should be), but I would expect to see a icon on each of the items in the current playlist. While that feature is in Fishbone, it isn't there on the default skin. The only way to get there at the moment is to drill down via artist and or album and then find the track or to search for the track... I did have a quick look at the html but I'm afraid it is beyond me. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
Tim- I don't understand your memory leak issues and won't be able to test until I have an N800, which should be soon. What you're describing sounds extremely odd and points to a hardware issue, not software (though I wouldn't rule out either at this point). On the Music Magic thing (which, I believe, is the same as MusicIP)...in theory, it should already work like that. From your post, I guess it doesn't. The support for this plugin in Nokia770/Touch was actually graciously added by KDF, who wrote the Fishbone skin. So, if it works for you in Fishbone, it's probably not that far off from working in Nokia770/Touch. I have never successfully gotten Music IP working on my linux machine. While it professes cross-platform support, I dorked around with it for a few hours and just gave up because it was never fully updating and being generally a pain in the butt. I like the concept of it, but can't really be the point person for support/development on it because I can't get it working in my environment. sorry I'm not giving you great answers here, but that's the scoop. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
Ben, I'm finiding it very difficult to track it down but one thing will guarantee it won't happen and that is to remove the Sandisk SD Card - why that manifests itself in a browser memory leak I don't know. I'll see what happens with the SDHC cards. Just in case it is a hardware fault I'll open up another one of the N800s I have and try the Sandisk card in it. I've also re installed the Nokia 770 skin from scratch and copied it to a new (N800) folder prior to editing. All I've done so far is re-arrange the home page. Something completely different. I installed MusicMagic and it takes a handful of clicks to base a new MM playlist based on the currently playing track. On the Fishbone skin for example each item in the current playlist has an MM icon. How difficult would it be to add the same to the N770 skin? Great work BTW. I ordered three Squeezeboxes today and tend to implement the 3 additional zones next week. Re: [slim] Nokia N800
hi Tim- a couple of notes on your previous posts. on checkins: If there is a bug that needs fixing on both branches, if feasible I will usually test and check the fix into both branches, 6.5 and trunk (7.0). on memory leaks: The Nokia770 and Touch skins I maintain make very heavy use of AJAX, which sends requests to slimserver in the background and updates elements on the page without the need to update the entire page (for example, when the current song changes). This makes for a much nicer user experience, but with AJAX comes a greater possibility for memory leaks. Internet Explorer is usually the prime offender in not handling memory correctly, but the Opera/N800 environment may have similar issues. That said, finding and plugging AJAX memory leaks is very difficult. If there is a real problem here, any specifics on how to reproduce it would be helpful, and opening a bug at http://bugs.slimdevices.com is the proper route for reporting it. on current development: I should note that I haven't touched any development on either branch in quite some time, as I do all of this work in my spare cycles, of which I've had very few in the past 6 weeks or so. However, there are a number of nice enhancements I've completed in 7.0, which I documented here: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?TouchNokia770ss7Enhancements The big thing left on my plate for 7.0 skin development is to become compliant with what's necessary to support the new plugin API, so things like Favorites and third-party plugins are better served via the skin. cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas "the Nokia770 skin guy" http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31398 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Nokia N800
There's definitely something going on with the browser - it is consuming huge amounts of memory but only in certain obscure circumstances. I'll try to put together a step by step guide to reproducing the problem in the meantime I've just increased the swap to 128Mb... Are you still updating the skin in the nightlies Ben, or is 6.5.x pretty much fixed with all development work focussed on 7? Great skin btw. I was able to get 4 N800s FOC (Nokia is my brother's ad agency's biggest client), and I've got Squeezeboxes sitting in Node 0 (next to the home cinema stack). They replaced a QED MusiQ and an old Imerge Soundserver. The cabling for high level audio is already in place, but the N800 in conjunction with Slimserver is just so much better. The soundserver was controlled by Philips Prontos and every time I added a new album I had to edit the remote control. I've been asked to write it up for the UK Home Automation website - http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/. The webmaster has a Sonos system, but most of the site members are DIY tinkerers, loads of them run Linux so slimserver is right up their street. That sounds like a problem with the media streamer, not with the Nokia770 skin or the browser. Stream to the N800, close your browser (your stream should continue to play via the audio player), and see if the memory spike is still there. I just received my N800 yesterday. So far, I have had one browser crash. I was browsing some random site and the browser just disappeared. However, I then upgraded to the newest software version from Nokia's website, and haven't seen a problem since. So far, I'm happy with it, except that it renders my GMail window weirdly, unless I use the standard HTML version. As a SlimServer remote, it's been great so far, although the song progress bar on the Nokia770 skin is a touch out of sync with the real progress of the song. This isn't a huge deal since it's not like I sit and watch the remote while it's playing music. I've also had good luck with using the media player on the N800 to stream music directly to the unit from SlimServer. -Steve ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nokia N800 browser crashes?
The N800 in conjunction with the 770 skin is an excellent means of controlling Slimserver, especially with muliple SB setups. I have never experienced an N800 browser crash on Slimserver or with any of the other sites I frequent with it (Gmail, Ebay primarily). Having used a PocketPC and various of its browsers to serve this purpose previously, I can safely say that the N800 is much better suited to the task for a number of reasons. If the only purpose for the device is to operate Slimserver, then the 770 may suffice (although future development of Slimserver or the 770 skin could impact this). The N800 would likely enhance this for most, and if you may venture into other uses, reviews of both devices suggest that the N800 has a significant hardware advantage. -- ds2021 ds2021's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10078 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34212 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Nokia N800 browser crashes?
I don't think you're going to have browser crashes when using it as a slimserver controller. Most of the browser crashes I experienced with the 770 were when viewing webpages with, e.g., a large amount of flash-based content. Also, it was the early OS versions that esp. stunk as far as stability. By late 2006 the 770 was a pretty stable device. I'm in between Nokias right now (sold my 770 last week, waiting on the arrival of an N800), but it sounds like there are enhancments to the N800 that are of significance if you want to use it as a slim remote. Mainly: better wifi and "instant on". cheers, #!/ben -- bklaas "the Nokia770 skin guy" http://www.last.fm/user/bklaas/ bklaas's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=58 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34212 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Nokia N800 browser crashes?
I'm considering buying a Nokia N800 primarily to serve as a souped up remote for my Squeezeboxes. In my research I've heard mention of browser crashes -- is this a common problem with the N800? Does anyone here have any experience using the N800 as a Squeezebox remote that they could share with me? And finally, is it worth paying the extra for the N800, or would the N770 suffice? Any other products I should consider? I thought about the Harmony remotes, but I like the idea of having a 2-way controller. Thanks a lot in advance. Transmitting could be very useful if you use the device as a GPS navigator in the car, which is the only way I could justify purchasing it. Ben did a fantastic job on the skin -- it looks really really sharp on the device. I can confirm that with the faster processor and more RAM, the N800 is even better for controlling the server. It's fast enough now that browsing by album art (for example) is as quick as it is on the PC. -- Victor "I'm against animal testing. They get all nervous and give the wrong answers." Re: [slim] Nokia N800 Remote
Actually it is as simple as opening the Nokia's web browser and pointing it to the slimserver URL. And for best effect, use the Nokia770 skin that Ben Klaas has developed, which also works fine on the 800. It is designed for the Nokia's screen size, and has a lot of other nice touches. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33070 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Nokia N800 Remote
Hey guys, before i start, id like to say i have searched the forums Ok, so today my dad went to a Hi-Fi show, and he saw someone controlling a Squeezebox with a Nokia N770 He was very impressed by this, and would also like to do this, the guy recommended the N800 as its practically the same, just faster So my question is, how do you get this to do it (if there is a link you can redirect to, that would be good also) apparently the N770 was displaying album art, album details, track details etc, so i don't think its just the same as going to the slimserver URL - however I'm not sure (As i don't use a Squeezebox) Thanks for any help on this -- yahooadam yahooadam's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10393 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33070 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Nokia N800 fast forward through MP3 files
Can this device, which appears to be compatible with the SqueezeBox, fast forward through large mp3 files? I'm talking about mp3 files on the N800 device itself, and is there a way to QUICKLY fast forward, or go directly to randomly chosen parts of the mp3 file? [slim] Nokia N800
It looks like (http://www.linux-watch.com/news/NS7056717365.html) the Nokia N800 is out, at least in the US. This is the replacement for the 770, with twice the RAM, faster CPU, and full size SD slots. Should work very well with the 770 skin, I'm assuming performance should be much improved. I'd get one but have to wait a few months for my gadget karma to increase again. -- mrfantasy --Mike mrfantasy's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1127 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31398 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
