I will be either watching TV with the headphones on, listening to music

That isn’t why I asked. I wondered what the use case was.
I have my TV wired into an AVR which also has a Pi plugged into it and
quite often I listen to music on headphones while Swmbo watches TV but I
use an iPhone with iPeng controlled by Material and an Audioquest
Dragonfly to listen. It lets me move around but still gives me HiFi
quality music.

Surely that would require two DACs?

On the back of the Beresford DAC there are two pairs of RCA output
sockets labelled fixed and variable, but both output the same analogue
output from the one (stereo) DAC. The output signal is always available
on the fixed pair; but on the variable pair (the other side of the
volume control) the signal is muted when headphones are plugged in.
(Beresford DACs 7510 ane 7520 work like this, later models don't.)

The fixed output goes to the integrated amp which has its own volume
control. The headphones are always plugged in. If I want to listen to
the TV through the HiFi speakers I turn the amp on. Whether it is on or
off the phones are working, and the volume control on the DAC sets their
level.

The TV is set to output to the internal speakers and the optical socket
simultaneously, but the volume on the TV remote is set to zero all the
time.

If one person wanted to listen to the TV and the other in the room
wanted to listen to music, the TV remote volume could be turned up and
the amp left off. It never happens in our house!

That is as close as I can get to what I think you want.

An older TV might have an analogue line out (on RCA sockets or on a
SCART) which could be routed to another input on the HiFi Amplifier, and
selected on the Amp. I could do that with my last TV. That would achieve
what you ask.

You are very generous, Ronnie, but don't go wasting a lot of time
rummaging. I too have boxes and boxes of stuff, not (that I can
remember) a USB to USB-C adaptor. 5 pin and 3 pin plugs anyone? I even
have a 4 pin which I once used to get an audio line out from a very old

I've never used a Pi4 as a player, but I did once use an old Pi1 as a

I can't see any reason why they'd change the purpose of the 3.5mm output

Interesting box. Of course I have the Apple DAC Dongle; and of course I
am not using the DAC in the Chromecast Audio Dongle, only the streamer
transport through Castbridge. The real work is done by the Beresford

Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio

Brian, you can see what is available if you SSH into the raspberry pi

User is: tc
passwd: piCore

type
Code:

alsamixer

when logged in (hit enter) and then hit F6 on the keyboard and select
the headphone output

36861

if you make any adjustment, hit Esc and then type

Code:

sudo alsactl store

 (hit enter)

then type

Code:

pcp br

 (hit enter)

The pi should reboot

Another way, is to go to the pCP web page, Squeezelite Settings > Audio
output device settings > click on card control; with this open, SSH

into the pi, make the adjustment, then click the the save button on the
Squeezelite settings page

This is a rpi4b headpone driving Sennheiser 600 'phones

36862

You can see the volume is up :)

I think it is to save the Kiddies' earoles:) pre-Brexit EU rooles.

By the by, it is possible to utilise the headphone output as a seperate
squeezelite instance whilst still using the usb output.

On one of my Pi’s I use one of these which has the 3.5mm/Optical you are

I did have to adjust the volume up a bit using alsamixer and then saving

Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio

2022-01-16 Thread Labarum

@Ronnie

It is possible to wind the headphone output up from 0 db to +4db

36857

That makes my cheap headphones much more useable. (Not that I will be
using them.)

I plugged in my Sennheiser HD25 phones - commonly used by audio pros.
Interestingly they are slightly more sensitive than my cheapies.

I am still, however, using 90%+ on the player volume.

It's not a bad sound out of the headphone socket when using the internal
Pi Dac which I don't suppose was ever meant for anything beyond hobby
project sounds.

As said previously, a useful evolution would be the sort of hybrid 3.5mm
jack that exports analogue sounds and optical output for a DAC.

My next development will be to swap the Beresford 7510 DAC I have here
in Southampton for the Caiman (7520) I have in Nicosia which has a USB
input. I can then move the Pi into the lounge and discontinue the use of
one of my Chromecast Audio Dongles.

But goodness knows when I will next be in Nicosia!

No matter, what I have working is working very well.

Thanks to all.

The output was set to headphones, but as I said was not driving hard.
Not a problem, kidstypike, I absolutely delighted with my new Pi. I
won't be using the 3.5mm jack. I was just exploring. I wonder if some
future evolution will include one of those hybrid 3.5mm sockets that is
also an optical out.

Presently the jack is set to USB, I'll leave it as it is, and for now
just ignore it.

This is what I see.

36852

I wonder what the ticked "Auto Gain" does.

No problem. I'll just enjoy this box as I now have it set up. It does
everything I want and uses a lot less power than the PC.

via the 3.5mm jack socket into a pair of active speakers, so I know it
was okay. Output was set to "Headphones" which is the default setting
on a fresh install of pCP.

I know nothing whatsoever about headphones, I don't own any.

You would be better served posting this in one of the pCP forums on this
site, where the devs may have more ideas.

But tell me about the headphone socket on the PC. I plugged in a pair of
cheap, sensitive headphones - nothing. I turned the software volume
control right up and could hear the music - but it was not loud even at
max volume. Is that 3.5mm jack socket more of a line out?

I switched to generic USB output and plugged in an old Fiilo D5 USB DAC
a friend gave me. The headphones went louder, but not much. Now I know
that D5 can deafen me with the same headphones when plugged into a
laptop. What gives?

I notice there are many pre-configured USB outputs in the setup page,
and an option to mess with ALSA directly. What's all that about, and is
there documentation?

The general view is that you're imagining it.

LMS streams the data over TCP/IP.
The receiving player controls how the data is decoded and clocked.
Nothing can affect the timing before then, including any noise on the
data lines - if you're wondering about noise affecting jitter.

UNLESS...
Noise (either electrical and/or radiated EMI) manages to affect the
analogue stages of whatever eventually turns the digital data into
audio.
Which in your case would be the Beresford DAC. I guess there is a
vanishingly small possibility that its analogue stages might get
affected by power line noise and/or EMI, and the Pi4 would have
different noise characteristics to the Windows PC.

But the difference you hear is overwhelmingly more likely to be due to
your expectations and/or state of mind. You've just installed a new toy
that you're pleased with - you are bound to be in a happy place and as a
result things sound nice.

Having turned my old PC off in favour of a Raspberry Pi to run LMS I am
wondering if I am hearing a cleaner sound.

I am now using LMS with Castbridge on rPi to a Google Chromecast Audio
dongle, and using an optical link into a Beresford 7510 DAC driving a
pair of Sennheiser HD25 headphones.

Is that possible or probable? The Windows PC could have been injecting
some digital noise into the stream. I am, though, suspicious even of my
own subjective impressions when they are unsupported by measurements,
which I cannot make.

But what is the general view?

without problems.

Indeed it was torture to let them go, but we moved house and they simply
didn't fit

Here are my MB Quart 980s to which I am very attached. One man can lift one,
but only with great difficulty!

In front of the TV is my SB3 and below my other Beresford DAC and a Quad
520f.

The Nicosia house was burgled. They took the TV and the SB3 (goodness knows
what they thought it was) and left the two expensive items - the DAC and the
newly refurbished professional Quad amp. I brought the 520 back to UK and
now use a less expensive 405-2. The Boom in the conservatory they left! Go
figure!

Yes, I understand the desire to move away from your old Windows PC. My
comment was in reference to you suggesting that you might run LMS on
your wife's laptop. That would be asking for trouble if she uses it as a
general purpose machine. Get a RPi (if you can find one in stock

sounded thick and congested.
The Meridian M6s that replaced them are surprisingly listenable. Nowhere
near as capable, of course, but they do sound pretty damn good.

Well I have already said I'm not in a rush: the Quad amplification is
classic stuff and will probably outlast me, but the Beresford 7510 is
approaching 20 years old. It has had a replacement power supply, but
sooner or later it will fail. It is not a top notch DAC by current
standards, but it is good enough for my purposes. But then you say

Well I have already said I hardly use the Windows Desktop anymore, but
it is using more electricity than a Pi would use to run LMS better. I
don't even have a monitor attached to the PC anymore and have to Remote
Desktop in. If it decides to upgrade or otherwise get itself into a
Windows frenzy, Remote Desktop stops working and I haven't a clue what's
going on. It's 15 years old and, and even though it has a recent SSD,
it struggles with Windows 10 in its latest upgrade - time to be rid.

And you got rid of the big ATCs - buckets of tears. In my Nicosia house
I have the flagship MB Quart towers (no longer made) - it will be a sad
day when they have to go.

Ok now I understand that you're using Chromecast devices as virtual
squeezeboxes.
What's confusing me is why you want to change anything. What's wrong
with your current Beresford DAC?

Regarding moving the LMS server, I would strongly recommend not running
it on a Windows machine that's also being used for other general purpose
stuff.
If you go the piCorePlayer route, I can tell you that you don't need a
RPi4 - it works just fine on a RPi3. Lack of USB3 for the disk isn't an
issue - audio data rates are so micky-mouse that USB2 is plenty fast
enough. My RPi3 LMS server is even running some SOX filters for DRC and
the CPU is nowhere close to maxed out - typically around the 25% mark.

Start with a Pi4 as server then with a suitable USB3 HD but the
consensus is that as a server it should be connected via LAN. It is
technically possible to run on WiFi but not advised.
Running on Windows just isn’t as stable.

The Audiolab M-DAC would do it but it’s overpriced for your requirement
and not something you’d hide behind the TV. Very flexible though.

The latest version of the Khadas Tone Board I mentioned earlier would be
perfect if it had optical instead of coax. It has the necessary
headphone amp stage plus USB in (for Pi) and coax.

Agreed. The latest Beresford DACs have lost the functionality I value.
The older ones have fixed and variable line outs, so the variable output
drives the headphones and the fixed goes to the Quad 77 Integrated Amp
with its own volume control.

The required functionality could be restored by deploying a separate
headphone amp with its own volume control. A passive splitter from the
DAC could send the analogue output to phones and amp at the same time. I
have not looked, but there could well be headphone amps with pass
through.

I have one of each Polyvection device. The Digi32 is a beta test
version. Both it and the Dac32 are very capable devices and surprisingly
good but I’m not sure if you’d hear any upgrade if you used the Digi32
with your existing DAC. Your big issue isn’t really the player device
it’s the functionality of your DAC which may be difficult to replace.

Thankyou d6jg. You accurately describe my system as I described it in my
OP and subsequent posts.

I have three Chromecast Dongles on the network. Castbridge automatically
found and registered all of them. They become virtual Squeezeboxes
thanks to the brilliance of the Castbridge Plugin. Of course they do not
have a screen, but neither did the early Squeezebox Receiver. I control
my whole system from the web interface in the browser in the Chromebook
on which I am now typing. I could do the same from my Android Phone or
Tablet.

https://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Squeezebox_Receiver.html

Castbridge is superbly competent. To my surprise it recognises my
Chromecast Video Dongle (I have two Audio and one Video Chromecasts),
and when I send audio to the video dongle the TV bursts into life and
the Album Art and track details are displayed on the screen as the music
plays. (Once I change channel on the DAC!)

I have only one true Squeezebox - a Boom - my SB3 was stolen.

I note there are various ways to create virtual Squeezeboxes and one of
the most interesting is perhaps the PloyVestion products

https://polyvection.com/en/

which tempt me.

The OPs DAC has 2 x Optical in with headphone amp and RCA to his amp.
The Chromecast is in use with the Castbridge plugin and uses one of the
optical in. TV uses other.
Not sure how the switching operates

If you've got a decent DAC with multiple inputs, why not just feed the
output of your Squeezebox player into one input and the TV into another?
Most modern TVs have an optical output.

I don't really understand why any Chromecast devices need to be involved
- can you explain their purpose?

Until recently: Transporter -> ATC SCM100A, now sold :-(
House move forced change to: piCorePlayer(RPi2/HiFiBerry DIGI2 Pro) ->
Meridian 218 -> Meridian M6

I guessed so. I am using it with optical link to the Beresford DAC which
is ageing but OK.

I can arrange Ethernet easily.

> What input types are available on your amp?

The Amp is a classic British Amp. It has two line level inputs on RCA
phono sockets. CD and FM Tuner are connected by buss, but the Tuner is
not in the stack. My amp is pure stereo not a media product with HDMI
in.

> I run a Pi4 coupled with a Khadas USB Tone Board in my Living Room.

I will investigate.

I use the Beresford DAC as a DAC-Preamp. It is powered on all the time
and the headphones are always plugged into the DAC and left on the sofa
ready to go. If I want the speakers I power up the amp. A setup that
required me to plug in the headphones to mute the speakers would not be
convenient.

I use the Chromecast audio because my SB3 was stolen in a house breakin
years ago, but I suspect the old SB3 even with external DAC was no
better than the Chromecast Dongle.

Looking around I see Raspberry Pies are hard to buy at the moment. I
think I want a 4B 2Gb - when I can get one.

Thanks for your input.

Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio

2022-01-10 Thread d6jg

The weakest component in your setup is the Chrome Audio. It’s ok but the
DAC chip isn’t the best but I assume you are using its optical out.
Is there Ethernet behind your TV? If so I’d get a Pi4 and set it up as a
server and client. As regards the choice of DAC or Digi out I think it
depends upon just how good the Beresford is and whether your amp has a
suitable input for the TV sound.
I run a Pi4 coupled with a Khadas USB Tone Board in my Living Room. The
Khadas was about £100 with case and is quite highly rated in reviews but
my TV audio is dealt with via hdmi arc.
What input types are available on your amp?

Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio

2022-01-10 Thread Labarum

Here is my current lounge setup established after years of not using
LMS. The server is on a very old PC in the third bedroom which I use
only when I need a Windows machine - rarely, as I use a Chromebook
almost all the time. I am typing on it now.

Running a big old and power hungry desktop PC 24/7 only for LMS is a bit
silly - so I raised this thread. A Raspberry Pi running PiCorePlayer as
server or server and client must be a good deal. But there are so many
ways forward.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with my old Beresford DAC strapped to
the back of the TV, and the Quad 77 Integrated Amplifier just goes on
and on. The shoebox loudspeakers are compromised by their position and
are too small for the room, but the arrangement is domestically tidy
and, in this flat, I use headphones most of the time.

My old Boom sprang to life when I pulled it out of a cupboard after
years of neglect, and I have just received a second Chromecast Audio
Dongle unused from a friend. It is currently hooked up to the Clavinova
in the second bedroom, and sounds very fine using its internal DAC.

It is a crying shame that Google discontinued the audio dongles - they
work very reliably with Castbridge.

So, fellow Squeezeboxers, how do I move forward?

Brian, I have one plugged into a rpi4b right now

36735

I use one of these

UGREEN USB C Adaptor Type C Female Adapter to USB 3.0 A Male Converter

Therer are other makes available

One needs to have a line-jack inserted in the Apple device (to activate
it) otherwise it isnot recognised

ronnie

Currently I use a rpi SPDIF output into a very old Quad CDP-2, using the
variable audio out into Active speakers (TV optical into the Quad)
