Surely that would require two DACs? On the back of the Beresford DAC there are two pairs of RCA output sockets labelled fixed and variable, but both output the same analogue output from the one (stereo) DAC. The output signal is always available on the fixed pair; but on the variable pair (the other side of the volume control) the signal is muted when headphones are plugged in. (Beresford DACs 7510 ane 7520 work like this, later models don't.) The fixed output goes to the integrated amp which has its own volume control. The headphones are always plugged in. If I want to listen to the TV through the HiFi speakers I turn the amp on. Whether it is on or off the phones are working, and the volume control on the DAC sets their level. The TV is set to output to the internal speakers and the optical socket simultaneously, but the volume on the TV remote is set to zero all the time. If one person wanted to listen to the TV and the other in the room wanted to listen to music, the TV remote volume could be turned up and the amp left off. It never happens in our house! That is as close as I can get to what I think you want. An older TV might have an analogue line out (on RCA sockets or on a SCART) which could be routed to another input on the HiFi Amplifier, and selected on the Amp. I could do that with my last TV. That would achieve what you ask. Brian, you can see what is available if you SSH into the raspberry pi User is: tc passwd: piCore type Code: alsamixer when logged in (hit enter) and then hit F6 on the keyboard and select the headphone output 36861 if you make any adjustment, hit Esc and then type Code: sudo alsactl store (hit enter) then type Code: pcp br (hit enter) The pi should reboot Another way, is to go to the pCP web page, Squeezelite Settings > Audio output device settings > click on card control; with this open, SSH into the pi, make the adjustment, then click the the save button on the Squeezelite settings page This is a rpi4b headpone driving Sennheiser 600 'phones 36862 You can see the volume is up :) I think it is to save the Kiddies' earoles:) pre-Brexit EU rooles. Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio
@Ronnie It is possible to wind the headphone output up from 0 db to +4db 36857 That makes my cheap headphones much more useable. (Not that I will be using them.) I plugged in my Sennheiser HD25 phones - commonly used by audio pros. Interestingly they are slightly more sensitive than my cheapies. I am still, however, using 90%+ on the player volume. It's not a bad sound out of the headphone socket when using the internal Pi Dac which I don't suppose was ever meant for anything beyond hobby project sounds. As said previously, a useful evolution would be the sort of hybrid 3.5mm jack that exports analogue sounds and optical output for a DAC. My next development will be to swap the Beresford 7510 DAC I have here in Southampton for the Caiman (7520) I have in Nicosia which has a USB input. I can then move the Pi into the lounge and discontinue the use of one of my Chromecast Audio Dongles. But goodness knows when I will next be in Nicosia! No matter, what I have working is working very well. The output was set to headphones, but as I said was not driving hard. Not a problem, kidstypike, I absolutely delighted with my new Pi. I won't be using the 3.5mm jack. I was just exploring. I wonder if some future evolution will include one of those hybrid 3.5mm sockets that is also an optical out. Presently the jack is set to USB, I'll leave it as it is, and for now just ignore it. This is what I see. 36852 I wonder what the ticked "Auto Gain" does. No problem. I'll just enjoy this box as I now have it set up. LMS streams the data over TCP/IP. The receiving player controls how the data is decoded and clocked. Nothing can affect the timing before then, including any noise on the data lines - if you're wondering about noise affecting jitter. UNLESS... Noise (either electrical and/or radiated EMI) manages to affect the analogue stages of whatever eventually turns the digital data into audio. Which in your case would be the Beresford DAC. I guess there is a vanishingly small possibility that its analogue stages might get affected by power line noise and/or EMI, and the Pi4 would have different noise characteristics to the Windows PC. But the difference you hear is overwhelmingly more likely to be due to your expectations and/or state of mind. You've just installed a new toy that you're pleased with - you are bound to be in a happy place and as a result things sound nice. Having turned my old PC off in favour of a Raspberry Pi to run LMS I am wondering if I am hearing a cleaner sound. I am now using LMS with Castbridge on rPi to a Google Chromecast Audio dongle, and using an optical link into a Beresford 7510 DAC driving a pair of Sennheiser HD25 headphones. Is that possible or probable? The Windows PC could have been injecting some digital noise into the stream. I am, though, suspicious even of my own subjective impressions when they are unsupported by measurements, which I cannot make. Yes, I understand the desire to move away from your old Windows PC. My comment was in reference to you suggesting that you might run LMS on your wife's laptop. That would be asking for trouble if she uses it as a general purpose machine. Get a RPi (if you can find one in stock anywhere) and stick piCorePlayer on it. Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio
Ok now I understand that you're using Chromecast devices as virtual squeezeboxes. What's confusing me is why you want to change anything. What's wrong with your current Beresford DAC? Regarding moving the LMS server, I would strongly recommend not running it on a Windows machine that's also being used for other general purpose stuff. If you go the piCorePlayer route, I can tell you that you don't need a RPi4 - it works just fine on a RPi3. Lack of USB3 for the disk isn't an issue - audio data rates are so micky-mouse that USB2 is plenty fast enough. My RPi3 LMS server is even running some SOX filters for DRC and the CPU is nowhere close to maxed out - typically around the 25% mark. Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio
The weakest component in your setup is the Chrome Audio. Its ok but the DAC chip isnt the best but I assume you are using its optical out. Is there Ethernet behind your TV? If so Id get a Pi4 and set it up as a server and client. As regards the choice of DAC or Digi out I think it depends upon just how good the Beresford is and whether your amp has a suitable input for the TV sound. Re: [slim] Rational Lounge Integration of LMS and TV Audio
3673636737367383673936740 Here is my current lounge setup established after years of not using LMS. The server is on a very old PC in the third bedroom which I use only when I need a Windows machine - rarely, as I use a Chromebook almost all the time. I am typing on it now. Running a big old and power hungry desktop PC 24/7 only for LMS is a bit silly - so I raised this thread. A Raspberry Pi running PiCorePlayer as server or server and client must be a good deal. But there are so many ways forward. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my old Beresford DAC strapped to the back of the TV, and the Quad 77 Integrated Amplifier just goes on and on. The shoebox loudspeakers are compromised by their position and are too small for the room, but the arrangement is domestically tidy and, in this flat, I use headphones most of the time. My old Boom sprang to life when I pulled it out of a cupboard after years of neglect, and I have just received a second Chromecast Audio Dongle unused from a friend. It is currently hooked up to the Clavinova in the second bedroom, and sounds very fine using its internal DAC. It is a crying shame that Google discontinued the audio dongles - they work very reliably with Castbridge. So, fellow Squeezeboxers, how do I move forward? +---+ |Filename: ManagePlayers.png| |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=36740| +---+ Brian In UK: Chromecast Audio Dongle and Chromecast Video Dongle attached to TV - Beresford DAC - Quad 77 Integrated Amp - AVI Neutron 4 Speakers - Sennheiser HD25 Headphones.
