Oh yee of little faith!!!
A few months ago I posted an idea to the list, mainly, that it would be great to see the Doobs do a Christmas CD. I got responses like "what have you been smoking?", and outright horse laughing. Well, well, well. I have been following Michael McDonald's website news, and he is putting the finishing touches on a Christmas CD which will be released just in time for Santa to listen to when he makes his rounds this year! It will have a combination of original tunes, and old classics. What a shame that Mikey is beating the rest of the Doobs to the punch. Come on guys, you still have time to dress Big Mike up as Santa, and have Tommy, Pat, Skylark, John, Guy, Keith, and Marc dressed as elves for the CD booklet, with some great tunes inside. Speaking of which, I wonder if Santa will bring me what I really want this year? I better start behaving now 'cause he'll need a big box to fit my gift into. Ed, I love that wow-wow, chucka-chucka, wow-wow, chucka-chucka on China Grove, and of course that bass lead in Skylark does on Slow Burn. Chris, thank you, thank you. What a great review I love hearing about my idol, Tommy. Man, I wish they would put some good stuff like this on our local stations. Have a great time at the upcoming concerts, and thanks again. Steve [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > >> Dear MembersThe undeniable benefit of living in the Bay Area just came to passwhile getting ready for work this morning the local Fox affiliate, KTVU, had a piece about the Doobie Brothers with the founding member Tom Johnston being interviewed by Mark Pitta...there were about three short segments in between the morning news, etcTommy was promoting a fundraiser open to the public which will occur this Thursday for St. Mark's School...hoping to produce funds for a gym for the school. The CD, Sibling Rivalry, was also promoted (and shown on camera) and Tommy performed People Gotta Love Again, LTTM, LTR, and Dock of the Bay. This interview took place at the Tiburon Ferry Terminal. Tommy accompanied himself on acoustic guitar and only excerpts of the songs were broadcasted...though LTR got more air time. Mark Pitta even got Tommy to do Dock of the Bay. (Tommy was funny by saying the words will be interesting. Tommy stood up by the railing to do this song and Mark P! >it! >> ! >> ta joined him for this very shor >> t segment.) During the interview Tommy mentioned how they just returned last night from Chicago and talked about traveling by bus from about 3 or places. He had a good set of bags under his eyes but played and sang well for an outdoor setting (not studio quality but still good). He sat on a park bench with the interviewer while his family (wife and two kids) were in the background sitting on an adjoining bench. The interview was light hearted mentioning how in the past the band traveled by plane cutting down on travel time (even interjected about the two planes and one burning) but that the part of tour they just returned from was bussed. He liked traveling by plane because he could sleep in and arrive at 12 and take off. Mark Pitta sang with Tommy on the chorus of LTTM and his studio anchors rated him by holding up cards..needless to say they razzed him and gave him very low scores. Re: Laughlin 2002
Speaking for myself, (for what it is worth) I would be real interested in a 2002 Doobfest in Laughlin, NV. I am a relative late bloomer in the club and on the list, since I didn't have computer access until 1999, and missed all the fun stuff you guys have been rubbing in that you have experienced. I figure that since it is so near to Vegas there should be great deals on airfare and accommodations, plus the scenery should be great. Last year I had all intentions of going to Saratoga, but my surgeon had other ideas. Hopefully, the blue bird of happiness won't bless me with anything like that again soon. As far as the club lacking the enthusiasm that it once had, I'm enthusiastic as hell, only problem is, we got no concerts nearby last year, and it looks like the same this year. Thanks to Big Daddy Doob I did get one Doobie fix in York, PA last year, and I may attempt the Pittsburgh show this year. If all else fails, I figure that I could slum off of Nick if I go to Nevada! (Get the beer cold Nick! LOL). I don't think that we should ever rule out having fan club get togethers, even if it is just some of us who happen to live near each other, and meet for dinner and a few brewskys! It's our own fault such things don't happen more often, and we should all make an honest effort to see our neighboring Doob Buds when we can. I hope that if any of you guys are ever going to be in the neighborhood you will let me know so we can get together and swap lies. Back to Laughlin, I haven't talked to the boss yet, but having a year to make plans sounds like a winner to me. Besides, I need to meet some old friends there, ie. Glenn, Gina, Nick, Holly, Gary, Debbie, Janyce, Steve, Torrey, etc., etc. I hope that someone out that way will take the bull by the horns and get this train a rollin' for Laughlin in 2002. Who are the Doob fans?
Hi folks. I'm Slowburnin' Steve, age 46. I grew up in Morristown, Tennessee, about 35 miles from Knoxville. I discovered the Doobie Brothers about late 1971, early 1972, right after I got my first 8-track tape player for the ol' 1967 Chevy Impala, my first car. I remember having to defend the Doobs from my crazy Youth Minister at church who thought they were surely demon possessed, and my buddies, John and Larry, who preferred Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, thinking the Doobs were too mild. I graduated from East Tennessee State University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Social Welfare Degree, married my college sweetheart, worked 8 years a district exec with the Boy Scouts of America, during which time I was promoted to come work in Roanoke. In 1981 the college sweetheart decided that the grass was greener on the other side, and I came home one day to find packing boxes everywhere. Just as well, the woman was deranged anyway. She didn't like the Doobs. I remarried in 1984 to Saint Cindy of Roanoke, who has the patience of Job to have put up with me over the past 16 years. During our time together she has blessed my with two beautiful children, Eric-age 10, and Sally-age 6. Eric plays the piano, and Sally can sing LTTM with the best of them. I worked as Director of Volunteer Services at our local Area Agency on Aging from 1984 to 1989, and have been a Social Worker with the City of Roanoke Department of Social Services, specializing in Child Day Care, from 1989 to the present. In 1998 I discovered the Doobie Fan Club, and struck up a friendship with Laurin Willis, who I thought was female, and so I was very polite and gentlemanly until I found out we had similar equipment. Now he's my buddy and sometimes traveling companion. In 1999 we were talking and I mentioned that I owned every album the Doobs had produced, but had never seen them in concert because of time, money, or distance. Big Daddy Doob informed me of an upcoming concert in Charlotte, NC, so I positioned myself on the Ticketmaster website with hands as fast as a gunfighter when the tickets went on sale. It was there that my dreams of a lifetime came true. I saw the greatest U.S. band, and after the show I went backstage to meet my idols. I saw the Doobs again in 2000 in York, PA, where the infamous butt squeeze of Keith Knudsen took place in honor of my friend, Glenn Maloy. Also, in 2000 I was slowed down considerably by emergency back surgery which I had been putting off, and now have permanent nerve damage due to procrastination. Unfortunately, not much dancing is possible for me anymoresorry Gina. Other than the Doobs I enjoy music by YES, ASIA, Jethro Tull, and Grand Funk Railroad. My kids have adopted Mark Farner of Grand Funk as "Uncle Mark", and they attack him with hugs whenever possible. I enjoy the shooting sports, gun shows, thump around on my Fender Jazz Bass guitar, and try to find the wind power for my Yamaha flute. I have had the privilege of meeting with Torrey, Gayle, Miles, Laura, Susie, Laurin, Dale, Linda, Anne, Helen, Steve A., Deborah, Gary, and talked to many, many more of you, none of which I would have ever found without this wonderful club, and for that, I am forever grateful. And yes, I have been known to be long winded. Slow Burnin' Steve _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.

BTM & "The Laurin Willis Story"
Here we go folks. Our BTM party, hosted by Big Daddy Doob, Palmer, and the First Lady, was simply great! Van Helen, Annabelle, Steverino, David, and Dream Chick Deborah all converged on Richmond, VA with Cindy and I at the Holiday Inn. After a couple of hours of lubrication, and watching Laurin dance on top of the tables in the bar with an unknown lady of questionable virtues, (more to come in "The Laurin Willis Story") we migrated to the Lone Star Steakhouse and had a wonderful meal. With Big Daddy Doob leading the way, our caravan arrived at his Mom and Dad's house, where Big Daddy's Daddy looked on with astonishment at this crazy entourage. With only a few minutes left before showtime, a hush fell over the group. Then, the familiar strains of Doob tunes began to fill the air. I don't think that anyone took a breath for the next 60 minutes. Personally, I now have an even deeper respect for our band. They presented themselves as human beings with human frailties who were willing to say "We made mistakes, bad choices, we admit it, we learned from them, cleaned up our acts, and now try to help other people not to make the same mistakes that we did". I salute you one and all! What courage it takes to stand up in front of millions of people, and admit our faults. I have always know that our Doobs were the greatest guys in the world, and BTM just confirmed my beliefs. After BTM we discussed the show, talked about the LA Convention, and perused some memorabilia which will be sold to benefit the NVF. Our evening ended all too soon, but with promises all around to get together again as a group. Now, as far as "The Laurin Willis Story", I will be very happy to contribute any and all dirt I have..for $$$, especially if I am to get to LA. Not that it matters, but I vote for Saratoga for the following reasons: I hate traffic. I hate stinky air. I love outdoor shows (I haven't melted in the rain yet, and I am sweet as sugar). Hi folks. Just a quick note to let you know what I heard this week. A friend of mine at work just returned from a cruise during the Christmas/New Year holidays. On this cruise several bands/musicians performed including our own Michael McDonald. The lady who works with me said "he still has those piercing, sexy blue eyes and soulful voice". She said that Michael's voice is not quite as deep as it used to be, but still simply wonderful. He took a lot of time to meet with fans, sign autographs, answer questions, and generally visit with everyone who wanted to hobnob. She said that Asleep At The Wheel also was on the ship, and performed well. In a nutshell, she had a great time. It's good to hear firsthand how 'ol Mike is getting along these days. Re: Collaborations
Mike, on the No Nukes album you have a couple of great tunes. One is "Power" with the Doobs backing up James Taylor, and another is "Lotta Love" with the Doobs backing Nicolette Larsen. Well Kat, Roanoke must have been a kinder, gentler town back then, or maybe it was the influence of having a true, classy band in town! Nowadays, you would not believe how our fine citizens act at the Civic Center. I unfortunately work there part time, and could tell some great stories, many of which Laurin has already heard. Our friend, Glenn Maloy, could use some prayers
Dear friends, I just found out from our Brother, Glenn Maloy, that he has had a terrible run of bad luck. Apparently, about two months ago he had a house fire, and was burned pretty bad. He is just now getting out of the hospital, and still can't move back into his house. He is fortunate to have some relatives living close by to him. Glenn's e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the time being. I don't know much more info at this time. Maybe someone who lives close to Glenn can bring us up to speed. Glenn was good enough to share many funny stories with me about Saratoga 2000, and thought you all should know that one of the family can probably use some prayers and good thoughts right now. Laurin, a truly great idea of a way the fan club can do an honorable service for their community! Up until I was diagnosed with diabetes about three years ago I was a dedicated blood donor with our local Red Cross. Unfortunately I am now "too sweet" and they can't let me donate anymore. I was already past the two gallon mark, and well on the way to number three. As a witness however, folks it doesn't hurt, it's safe, and you may well be saving the life of a small child or loved one through your donation. I guess that I started donating blood because of my father. He has extremely rare blood (ABnegative), and for a long time was on the emergency list back home if someone had an accident and needed his blood type. I remember one evening he got a call from the hospital requesting he come there immediately to donate due to a small child having an accident. Dad didn't hesitate, and shortly thereafter I became a donor. I always try to spread the word about how important it is to be a donor. To my knowledge there is no synthetic method of replacing blood at this time, so folks, it's up to the kindness of individuals. I'll continue to spread the word to our local folks who are able to donate. Dear SantaDoob, I have been a pretty good boy this year. I haven't done any gatecrashing at concerts, been overly obnoxious backstage, or partaken of too much alcohol, drugs, or wild, loose women (drat). I hope that you can bring me the following things for Christmas this year. My list is not very long and any thing you bring me will be appreciated. 1. An instructional video tape on bass guitar playing by Skylark. My buddy, Steve Adams says I need all the help I can get. 2. A Cris Simmons' Concert Cuisine cookbook. I know that she must have some secret method of keeping Pat so slim and trim. 3. An Ampeg SVT-4PRO 600 watt amp head and Ampeg SVT-1540HE cabinet. I realize this is a little powerful, but the neighbors have trouble waking up in the morning. 4. A t.c.electronic SCF Stereo Chorus/Flanger special effects pedal to help cover up my mistakes. 5. A lifetime concert pass for all future Doobie shows, with backstage access, meals with the band, airfare, and tour bus ammenities. (Geez, one can pray can't they?) 6. A collection of all Doobie t-shirts from the past, unworn, size 2XL please. 7. Last, but certainly not least, good health, happiness, and peace of mind for all the Doobies, their families, and members of the fan club. Thank you SantaDoob for any thing you bring me. Doobies in the news, finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe it. In today's issue of the local newspaper there was almost a full page article on the Doobies and the release of Sibling Rivalry with a great photo of the guys. I believe that this is the same article which hit major newspapers a couple of weeks ago, and is just now being picked up by the Roanoke news (not unusual considering everything we get here is stale dated). The article itself is pretty darn good, and I have always been told that any publicity is good publicity. Maybe now some folks will hit the stores for copies of Sibling Rivalry for Christmas ideas. By the way, does anyone know how sales of SR are doing? I have seen absolutely no promotion here locally. The weekly ads from Best Buy and others which push hot, new releases have never given it the time of day. I am really curious as to what sales are like. Anyway, I am thrilled that the Roanoke paper finally had some decent news for a change, even though it is a bit stale. I intend to call and thank them for the article. Hi folks. Today I got a call from a local radio station informing me that I had won an Epiphone acoustic guitar signed by all members of a group called "Barenecked Ladies". I entered the contest several weeks ago at the local music store while getting some new bass guitar strings, knowing that I never win anything. Anyway, since I would not know any of their songs if I heard them, I don't know what to do with this guitar, except not to play it and rub off the autographs like a dear friend did ( don't worry Miles, I won't tell anyone it was you). Should anyone have a deep desire for this jewel, I would be happy to trade it for another guitar signed by the Doobs. I'm sure someone out there has at least a few they could spare LOL. Re: Aftershow & basic Fan Club Etiquette
This is an open letter to all Club members and all members of the Doobie Brothers. The situation which happened recently is distasteful indeed. I know that we have all been so enthusiastic at times in the past at having an opportunity to meet with our heroes, the Doobies, or any other people whom we admire, that it is hard to keep from getting carried away in all the excitement/anticipation. That is very normal. Going to an extreme of lying, trying to force one's way backstage, or being a general nusiance is uncalled for, and none of us who were raised decently would ever, ever intentionally do such a thing, nor would we condone such actions. We are blessed to have Laurin as our President, and more than that, our friend. As part of his extended family, I feel that we all have a responsibility to help out any way we can at meet and greets to make sure that obnoxious troublemakers are brought to the attention of the security staff, and if necessary, the local police who are working the event. I work part time at our local Civic Center, and there is a constant problem with people trying to sneak backstage. We depend on other patrons to assist us in stopping problems before they start. Our eyes cannot be everywhere, and we truly appreciate patrons showing us potential troublemakers. After meeting with Pat, John, Tommy, Skylark, Keith, Guy, Mike, and Marc I can tell you that they are the nicest, most considerate celebrities in the world. We are very blessed to have the relationship that we have with them, and it has not happened overnight. I myself have promised Laurin that he can depend on me should he ever need help before/during/after a meet & greet, and I'm sure that you feel the same way. I pray that the band understands that the vast majority of us are well behaved and appreciate all the attention they have given to us. After all, they have always been there when I needed them to lift my spirit for the past 28 years. Well, that's my 2 cents for what it is worth. Ridin' With The Pres
Well folks, I finally got home long enough to tell you about the York, PA adventure. Friday morning I awoke at 2:00 a.m. unable to sleep, like a kid on Christmas morning. I knew that in a few hours I would be on my way to hook up with the Pres in Richmond, VA where he would then take the wheel and get us to York, PA to hear motorcycles. I left Roanoke at 7:30 a.m. for the 3 hour drive to Richmond, VA. The Pres had given me great directions to his house, and I arrived there about 11:30 a.m. Since he wasn't coming home till 12:30, I introduced myself to his 3 dogs, and played with them while chomping at the bit to be on the road again. The Pres arrived with a trumpet flourish, and after a quick loading of various guitars, booklets, and other Doob necessities, we were on our way. Miles had intended to accompany us but had overslept due to a power outage-BUMMER!!! He had to cancel out on us. The Pres was able to show off his intricate driving skills that I'm sure he learned at the Evel Knievel Driving Academy. (If you ever have a chance to ride with Laurin, please do. It is a true adventure!) Due to the traffic near D.C. and Baltimore our 3 hour trip became 5 hours! We finally slid in sideways to the backstage area, and unloaded guitars to be autographed. After meeting Ed, who is the guardian of the elusive backstage passes, we cruised the fairgrounds until showtime. We met up with Torrey and wife, Dale Dreyden and wife, and several other club members who I unfortunately never caught names. (You must please forgive me, as I have not been involved in the club long enough to know everyone, only the ones like Torrey who harrass me on a regular basis!) Finally, the lights went down and the familiar sound of flatheads and fat boys hit my ears like thunder. The boys took the stage and man were they rippin'!! I swear to you that Tommy's vocals are getting better every time I hear him! Skylark seemed a little more subdued than usual, but played in his normal, perfect fashion. Pat was Pat, what more can I say? He truly enjoys flowing all over the stage. Keith and Mike were in precision timing. Marc was blowing notes that you might hear when you go to Heaven if you are lucky. John was pulling strings perfectly as usual, but not very active on stage (I found out later that he had been up all night the night before working on the new website graphics, and he was really tired! Rest up Johnboy-we need you to stay healthy!) You will notice that I left Guy till last. He blew me away! Compared to last year, he has really gotten aggressive on the keyboards and is vastly improving his technique (Rick Wakeman, watch your back!). Oh, yea! And Pat announced from the stage that Guy is a Daddy now too! After 90 glorious minutes, the guys said there goodbyes. We hustled down to the backstage gathering point, and swapped lies for about 30 minutes. My buddy, Skylark, came out to sign autographs, but I could not get anywhere close to him.He was mobbed by fans who know that he is the finest bass player in the U.S. Big Mike joined him (who is not nearly as big as he was last year, and looks 10 years younger!). We were all moved inside the dressing room area since the temperature had dropped, and it was really getting chilly. Torry and his wife were kind enough to use my camera and snap photos of me bouncing all over the room. When I walked in, the event happened that I have waited 28 years for. There stood Tommy! I had to take about three deep breaths before I could walk up to him. I told him that it was truly an honor to finally get to meet him, and that I thought he was simply wonderful. He gave me a big grin, and I saw a twinkle in those deep, dark brown eyes that was like you would see if you caught Santa putting presents under the tree. I then had the opportunity to ask Big Mike how he had lost weight since I can use any advice I can get. He said it was a secret method, and he was forbidden to share it. Sounds like it's Top Secret, hm Then I had the chance to do a little payback on Keithie for my buddy, Glenn Maloy. I nuzzled up beside Keith, told him that a mutual friend, Glenn, had sent him a message. (Now you need to ask Glenn what happened in Saratoga to appreciate this!). I then gave Keith a nice, firm butt squeeze. He was really surprised, and just shook his head while grinning from ear to ear. He said to send Glenn his highest regards (in other words, payback to me and Glenn is going to be hell!). Guy was next on the hit list, and he really appreciated my compliments on his playing. Pat was last, and everyone should be pleased to know that he is feeling much better. He sprained his neck right before the convention, and was in a lot of pain while at Saratoga. (Cris, you make sure that he follows up with his physical therapy!!). All good things must come to an end, so we said our goodbyes, gave hugs all around, and the Willis Rocket blasted off for Richmond. Three hours and a sore throat after discussi

I'm floatin' so high right now I don't ever want to come down. Thanks to the greatest Doobie fan in the world, I'm gonna get to hear motorcycles tomorrow night. Knowing that I am not quite up to driving six hours to the show in York, PA after having back surgery, this wonderful fellow told me I can hitch a ride with him. If good deeds guarantee us a place in Heaven, this Brother in Doob is definitely going to be sitting in a prestigious spot there! Obviously I am not the only computer neophyte in the fan club. I downloaded the player and skin, but they did not combine. I got to hear "People Gotta Love Again" once. Re: Where would you be now?
Gina is right on. The fondest memories I have of my sorted, youthful past often revolved around the Doobie tune at the time that was getting airplay on our local radio station. I remember cruising around town in the ol' Chevy Impala while blasting China Grove, Long Train Runnin', or Jesus Is Just Alright. Playing the Doobies was always a great means of screening girlfriend prospects. If they didn't like their tunes, they didn't grace the front (and by no means the back) seat of the Yellow Submarine for very long. I remember driving around in the country with my buds, John and Larry, and arguing over how the Doobs were the people's band, versus Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Chicago, Black Sabbath, and Jethro Tull. Usually after consuming several beverages of questionable origin I would convince them that the Doobs were the greatest, down to Earth, kickass rock and roll band the U.S. had going. Over the years the Doobs were there in good times and bad (dating, marriage, divorce, sickness, and good health). They never swayed from providing music which could make me feel alive, and pull me out of the duldrums. They have always been like distant cousins that you don't get to see very often, but always look forward to their next visit. What do we owe them? A wealth of gratitude for every single moment of musical enjoyment we have had for almost 30 years. Thanks guys. Charlotte Chronicles
It was the hottest time of the summer, August I believe, and steam rose off the pavement like ghosts dancing in some haunted embrace. As Mike and I pulled into the dusty parking lot, I felt like I was going to a prom dance, or tapping into a fresh keg of chilled beer. We cautiously moved toward the main gate while eyeing everyone for a glimpse of our prey. Checking his photo for the twentieth time, I still saw no one fitting the description of our elusive contact. We proceeded to interrogate several nondescipt cretins who were as much help as approaching a New York cop for directions. Mike was looking like a lost sheep ready for slaughter, and I was even more determined than ever to get to the bottom of what had happened to the dude we had corresponded with, who would arrange passage though the heavily guarded sanctuary. Finally, after slipping a few "C" notes to a hot babe of questionable morals, she agreed to track down "Big L" and escort him to us. Minutes passed like trying to pour molassas in February. Sweat poured off us in streams, and my patience was wearing thin. Had we traveled over 200 miles only to have our dreams smashed into the bubbling asphalt? Our of the corner of my good eye, I saw a sultry dude approaching us with his head down low, glancing behind, and acting like he expected to be busted for hauling crank into a Miami suburb. As he got closer, I fingered the reassurring lump in my pocket. "Slow, that you?" he said with the nervousness of a rabbit 20 paces in front of some hungry hounds. "Hell yeah, you got the goods?" I replied, feeling the heat drain the last of my strength. "Sure do, here's your two backstage passes for you and Mike, be sure to meet me at the side gate after the show, and don't be late!" "No problem, and I've got my mini-camera right here" I replied while patting the lump in my jeans. "Alright, see you guys in a few" Laurin replied. "Thanks Laurin" Mike and I said in unison. The rest is another story. Slow Burnin' Steve _ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with "unsubscribe doobiefans-list" in the body.
Tennessee Doobies
Hi folks. Last week we went to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for a mini vacation and to do some back to school shopping. While there, a wonderful thing happened. Every single time we turned on a radio, or heard a radio playing in a store, they were playing a Doobie or Michael McDonald tune. It was almost eerie! This happened at least 15 times and then I stopped counting! Just goes to show, Tennessee folks demand quality music, and by golly, the radio stations provide it. Oh yea, for those who have a hard time tolerating non-Doobie related posts, I won't mention that the YES concert that I just returned from was without a doubt one of the best shows I have ever seen. East Coast shindig a bust
Well folks, I guess that an East Coast get together is not desired by many. Only five list members expressed any interest. That is sad enough, but what is worse is that several people I expected to have jumped behind the opportunity to have an informal weekend together did not even respond. They shall remain nameless, but you know who you are. I suppose that unless we have a full blown convention with members of the band in attendence there is no need in trying to have anything else. I do extend an open invitation to any members who are traveling through this neck of the woods. Give me a yell in advance, and maybe we can meet for a buffet attack or tip a pint. The sun blazed from a crimson sky like the inner depths of hell itself. As I crawled through the scorched sand of the Southland, I saw a small oasis of concert opportunity swaying in the leaves of a palm tree in Charlotte, North Carolina. With a final, gasping effort I clicked into Ticketmaster and drank deeply from a cool mountain spring. Even though the Doobies have temporarily abandoned us Southerners, it would appear that YES will grace us with their presence on July 28 in Charlotte. Tickets center stage, 19 rows back, not too bad. Sigh, more of my hard earned money goes to England instead of staying in the U.S.A. Doobs, we await your return. Slow to Find A Southern Doobie Concert Steve P.S. I pose a question to the list. Concerts, concerts, concerts
Well folks, since we currently have no, read that "0" tour dates for the Doobies anywhere on the East coast, I have had to make myself content with seeing some other groups lately. Last week we had the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, and Britney Spears here in Roanoke. Since I work part-time at the local Civic Center, I get in all shows for free. The Peppers were really cookin'! I lasted all of two minutes watching Britney Spears (not into her at all). This weekend I'm traveling to Suffolk to see Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad. My daughter, age 5, has a big crush on him. In May we will be graced with KISS, Ted Nugent, and Skid Row here. I have always wanted to see Ted, since he is a real wild man. When I last saw KISS in 1975 I couldn't hear for about three days, just a dull roar. Unfortunately, like in the music world goes on here on the East coast without my Doobies. Maybe Torrey, Miles, and I should recruit some Navy Seals for a kidnapping mission to California and Hawaii to bring the boys over this way. Of course it would be much simplier for some of our promoters to get off their keisters and bring them here! Slow Burnin' Steve Slow Burnin' Steve "It's time for action, the talkin' is done! A Wonderful Surprise!!!!!
Hi fellow Doobs and Doobettes. I have just had the greatest two days of my life! Yesterday I was at work, doing the same old boring, humdrum stuff, when my phone rang. A slightly familiar voice asked if I was the same Steve Wice who is a member of the Doobie Brothers fan club. I responded that of course I was, and asked who was calling. The familiar voice on the other end said that he was Pat Simmons, and he needed my help if at all possible! It seems that Pat and Cris were visiting some friends nearby, and on the way to visit some other folks, their rental car had broken down. They were on Interstate 81 near where I work/live, so like a flash I told the boss I had to rescue some friends. Like a speeding bullet, I flew to the trusty Isuzu Trooper, with toolbox in hand, and headed out to I-81. When I arrived, there stood Pat on the side of the road, munching on a Whopper with cheese, while Cris sat in the rental Ford, fussing at him for not renting the Honda, which she preferred. I gave Pat a big hug, and asked him how he got my phone number? It seems that last year when I gave Pat my business card he actually held onto it. We piddled with the engine a while and finally got that lousy Ford running. By this time it was getting up into the afternoon, so I insisted that Pat and Cris come spend the night at my house which is near the Interstate. It took some persuading, but Cris decided that she wanted to check out the wife's recipe for Coconut/Raisin/Pecan Pie. They followed me home, and I happened to remember that I had not warned the wife that we would be having company. She was surprised, but took up with Cris right away. They compared motherhood stories, while Pat entertained Eric and Sally by plunking on the guitar and singing childrens' songs. You should hear Pat do "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Ride Little Pony". Cindy whipped up a great supper with Cris as her tag team partner. After a supper of marinated chicken, mashed potatos, rolls, baked beans, brocholi, coconut/raisin/pecan pie, and ice cream, we all sat on the deck and sipped some Chateau Morseitte Red Mountain Laurel wine, while engaging in solving the worlds' problems. About midnight I tucked Pat and Cris in the guest bedroom, and rolled them out this morning to a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, homemade biscuits, gravy, hash browns, coffee, and orange juice. Pat and I went over to the local target range after breakfast, and did a little target shooting while Cris and Cindy continued to swap motherhood stories and recipes. Well, they just pulled out to continue on their journey. Hopefully that blasted Ford will make it on down the road now. We all cried when they left, especially my kids who wanted Uncle Pat and Aunt Cris to stay longer. Pat is about 10 pounds heavier than he was when they arrived, thanks to a healthy appetite. I hope that someday they will pass this way again, but in the meantime, April Fool's!! Gotcha Slow Burnin' Steve "It's time for action, the talkin' is done! A list suggestion
Hi folks. May I make a sugesstion to stir up the list postings a wee bit? Several of us have burning, nosy questions about various members/contributing musicians composing the Doobies. Their website has some info regarding the core members, and a few others. I, for one, have been unable to get any information on my favorite elusive bass player, Skylark. I even tried to print his photo off the Lakland bass guitar website, with no success. Maybe we could feature a member of the week, and anyone with inside info could post it to the list, so that we could get to know the band members better. For instance, pertaining to Skylark: 1. What other bands has he played in? 2. Any family info? 3. I doubt he was born with Skylark as his name. Anybody know what his name really is? 4. What are his favorite hobbies? 5. Where was he born? 6. What musicians influenced him the most? 7. How can a fan collect memorabilia (photos, solo endeavors, etc.) 8. Any other info for nosy fans. I don't know if anyone has inside info, but this would be great to stir up a little excitement prior to Tour/Convention season. Cris, I know you check the posts from time to time. Feel free to jump in. I figure that with the number of members who have been affiliated with the Doobs over the years, this could keep us busy for several weeks if we concentrated on one member each week. Imput/criticism welcomed. Slow Burnin' Steve "It's time for action, the talkin' is done! Dave Shogren
Hey folks. Maybe I missed any posts about this, but I just read in the March issue of Bass Player magazine that Dave Shogren passed away on December 14, 1999 in his recording studio. The article mentions that earlier last year Dave and some former Doobies toured with ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynard as the "Former Doobie Brothers", which I was aware of the problems that involved. Did I miss the news about this, or is it just another journalistic faux pas? Slow Burnin' Steve (maybe slow on getting news too!) Off Topic, A Concert opportunity
Dear Friends, For those of you who might be interested, Mark Farner, former lead singer/guitarist of Grand Funk Railroad, will be in concert in Suffolk, Virginia at their Spring Spectacular on Saturday, April 15. Along with his concert, will be an air-show and hot air balloon festival during the day. The only cost that I am aware of is $5.00 per car for parking. The concert is underwritten by sponsors. Last year I attended Mark's concert in Huntington, West Virginia, and it was awesome to say the least. I have volunteered to assist in organizing the Meet-and-Greet time for fans to visit with Mark, much the same as I did in Huntington. Mark always tries to make some time for visiting either before or after his show. If you are interesting in attending, please contact me off-list, and I will keep you posted of any developments. The web site for the Spring Spectacular is www.suffolkfest.org/balloon/index.html If you have never seen Mark Farner in concert, you owe it to yourself to attend. He is still as energetic as he was years ago with Grand Funk Railroad. Another Doob?
Congratulations Laura and Miles. I reccomend that once the little booger is born you ship the youngun' off to Peter Dubin for proper Doobie lifestyle training! Pete needs a youngun' under foot to make him feel younger. LOL Seriously, we are all thrilled for you two, plus Josie will have someone to pick on now! Doobie stories/Musician tales
Well, I guess it is time once again to bore everyone. Way back when the Earth cooled, in 1973, I was going out on a hot double date with a girl named Marilyn, a Carson-Newman College girl, who was going to church with me back home in Morristown, Tennessee. For some strange reason our Youth Minister needed to hitch a ride with us, so we crammed him into the back seat of my trusty '67 Chevrolet Impala. As we pulled out of the First Baptist Church parking lot I popped Toulouse Street into my 8-track, and Jesus Is Just Alright started to play, at a very high volume I might add. Well, the Youth Minister, John Timothy Sumners, informed me that the song was sacreligious because Jesus should be more than "just alright" with us. I think I told him to blow it out his ear. My '67 Impala, Marilyn, and John Timothy have not been a part of my life for many, many years, but the Doobies have outlasted them all. (I must admit, Marilyn was a real blonde cutie, and I would have liked for her to have been in my life a wee bit longer, sigh). As an aspiring bass guitar player, I am proud to say I learned China Grove as one of my first songs. Smoke On the Water and Louie, Louie came in as close seconds. Of course an intelligent chimp could play them too. I slave over a Fender Jazz Bass, an Ampeg amp, and a Zoom 506 special effects system. In my younger years I diddled with a flute, and have a Yamaha. My singing is pretty good, but I can't play and sing at the same time. Guess it's why I can't chew gum and walk too. Next batter up! Crappy news
Well, just when everything is going well, something seems to come along and screw it up. I had my heart set on going to the Saratoga convention. Air fares have just about doubled because of our good friends in the Mid-East. Also, the wife has to have major surgery next month, and it looks like I won't be able to put off my surgery much longer. For the past three weeks my back has had me in constant pain. I am depressed to say the least. This much I do know. If our Doobies come anywhere within 4 hours of here, I will be there if I have to crawl. I don't think that I could be in enough pain to keep me from seeing them again. I don't know why I am laying this on you guys. I guess it is because you guys are the next thing to family for me. If I have a miracle happen I will be at Saratoga, if not, you guys yell real loud for me. I will be with you in spirit. Until then, I want to hear some good news. Post, people, post!! Doobie Wish List
Oh my God, Gina, how I have waited for an excuse to list my insanity. Here is my Doobie Wish List: 1. To have an outdoor barbecue with all the Doobies here at my house, and all my fan club Buds too. 2. Have Skylark living in the house beside me, Tommy on the other side, Pat in front, and John M. behind me. 3. To have private bass guitar lessons from Skylark. 4. I want the talent and ability to play Slow Burn as good asSkylark. 5. To smoke a cigar with Big Mike while we discuss the pros and cons of different bikes. 6. To give TJ a big hug and tell him just how much I appreciate what his music has meant to me for the past 29 years. 7. Go surfing with John M. at Myrtle Beach, SC (a little inside joke between me and John). 8. Have Keith as drummer in our local band. God, do we need a good drummer. 9. Have a job as Road Manager for the Doobs. 10. To go back in time and attend every damn concert the Doobies have ever performed. Well, that's my list. The truth be known I would be happy as a squirrel in a Planters peanut factory if even one of these wishes came true. Trivia question
Well, since no one wants to take a chance on my trivia question I'll give the answer. On the inside jacket of Tom Johnston's "Everything You've Heard Is True" album is a photo of Tommy standing behind his Harley. If you look closely in the chrome of the bike you will see the image of the photographer, which to me appears to be a very skinny fellow with very long hair. I would just about bet my britches that it is Pat Simmons behind the camera, joking around with Tommy. Guitar clinic
Hey folks, last year John McFee gave a great guitar clinic at the convention. How about this year giving us bass players some attention? I vote for a bass guitar clinic given by Skylark. Anybody want to join me for a push for this? If so let's flood the list with Skylark requests!!!
