Re: [DQSD-Users] [DQSD-Devel] IE 11 breaks DQSD

2013-11-22 Thread Shawn K. Hall
I was able to get the style loader to work again by granting 'users'
'full control' of the Quick Search Deskbar folder security rights. The
menu itself still doesn't appear, but at least it does do something.
This will really help re-styling it.

jsx showpop();

The site that formerly offered the service that the qac search relied on
is no longer available. It needs to be removed.

Re: [DQSD-Users] dqsd.net webmaster?

2010-03-12 Thread Shawn K. Hall
I agree 100%. Part of the erason I stopped actively developing public
searches for DQSD was that it was near impossible to get changes to the
site. I'm not a publicity hound, but I do like to have my efforts
published when I devote my time to something like this. The current site
is very "early 21st century", so is lacking a lot of features that
should be available on most current sites.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Still struggling with colors on Win 7

2010-03-12 Thread Shawn K. Hall
I've been using Win7 on my default desktop, and if it weren't for some
very custom styles, DQSD wouldn't look even remotely similar to the rest
of the taskbar AND be legible. I use a white font, for example, on a
dark grey medium intensity toolbar. The white font alone was a challenge
to get consistent. The important thing was to set the background to
solid black (totally unexpected) since that's what the base color was.
You'd think Windows would have been smarter about that, and asserted the
background colors uniformly across the taskbar. Nope.

I haven't had time over the last few months to toy with this more than a
little, so haven't made any progress on developing a uniform "single
style" that'll work everywhere, on every background color and intensity.
My current workload is simply intense, BUT, as soon as one of these
large jobs I have in the works is done I'll be able to spend some more
time playing with that.

I also intend to develop the XML settings stuff, but that's not really
related to this. :)

It's the "pagetemplate" parameter:
  pagetemplate="maximized.htm";

If the user has the file association for that extension set to the 32bit
version, it should load that. Also, if they do not WANT to associate
that extension, they could use another custom extension and create that
association. This for localprefs.js:
  pagetemplate="dqsd.32bitie";

And this registry change:

'//
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.32bitie]
"PerceivedType"="text"
@="html32file"
"Content Type"="text/html"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\html32file]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\html32file\shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\html32file\shell\open\command]

@="&Open"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\html32file\shell\opennew\command]

I don't have a 64bit OS at my disposal at the moment to actually test
it, but if someone is up to it, let me know how it works out.

Yep. I wonder if the "-embedding" switch would assist in this?

The problem in Windows (at least in this instance) is that it's not
necessarily a simple shell call. A POST usually has to be made to the
server (which requires additional HTTP headers that can't be passed on a
command line), which means the application being pushed has to interact
temporarily with DQSD.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Ubiquity...

2009-03-27 Thread Shawn K. Hall
I don't think I could survive without DQSD. I install it on just about
every computer I touch. For some people, the basic "google search" is
all they need and when they discover it can do more they're thrilled.
For myself, I use DQSD custom searches to manage over 150 services,
applications and other functionality directly. Everything from Plesk to
phpMyAdmin to FTP, text formatting, sorting, conversion...I live in
DQSD, and find mysef WIN+S'ing on every computer I touch.

There is definitely a barrier to entry, though. People wanting to make
it do things beyond the basics have to learn how. We need a simpler
control interface. Simpler configuration (WYSIWYG) for setting
javascript variables - probably best stored in an XML file that's parsed
during load to compose the JS automatically.

It also needs to be more malleable. It should be able to plug into
browsers as a toolbar, desktop objects, web pages and so forth. Creating
a web-page to host the functionality and client-side settings (that may
be saved/preserved to the server as an option) may be the way to go -
and I've started it several times, reimagining the process each time.
It's just not there yet - and some of the functionality (like the
ability to run desktop commands) is getting even harder to implement as
security becomes more of a concern.

That's all a lot of work, though. Who has the time?

I use a multiline DQSD bar, and wanted to stuff as much info in it as
possible. This is the contents of my localsearch.css:

.clock
{
 text-align:center;
}

These are the relevant settings from localprefs.js:

clock=true;
clocklongform  = "  \r\n MMM dd,  \r\n hh:mm A ";
clockshortform = "  \r\n MMM dd,  \r\n hh:mm A ";

This presents within DQSD as the following (though it's centered in
DQSD):

The real magic (since the specific theme I'm using is centered anyway)
is in the "clockshortform". Without that change it would have been
abbreviated to only the time.

If you look in yy.xml you'll see an example that's based on the
"yyfsupport" function. Here's one (that doesn't require a supporting
function) specific to the field you posted (replace "yourform" with
whatever your form name is):

  try{
var r;
idSession = "";
sUrl = "http://example.com/";;
var xmlHttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XmlHttp");
xmlHttp.open("GET", sUrl, false);
xmlHttp.send("");
var sBody = xmlHttp.responseText;
var rx = /authenticity\_token"\svalue\="([^"]+)"\>/g;
while ((r = rx.exec(sBody)) != null){
  idSession = r[1];
}
document.formname.login.value = idSession;
  }catch(e){}

That SHOULD do it for you. :)

We could put something similar to the yyfsupport function in the base
code, I think, which would make this kind of thing a lot easier.

Re: [DQSD-Users] comx /dilbert access denied

2008-11-10 Thread Shawn K. Hall
That's exactly the same error.

The only thing that jumps out at me is that the code in comx is using
synchronous XML-HTTP transfers, it isn't changing the UA, and isn't
checking for errors, which can all cause issues.

If the UA isn't changed you may end up where the server flat-out rejects
attempts to connect from the MS XmlHttp object (mine does).

Synchronous transfers can cause stale or broken connections if the
connection is refused or for any other reason the server doesn't return
content. Finally, without error trapping, there's no way to tell what
the error could be.

I'm going to put this on my short list for rewriting it to make it do
all of the above. It's a lot of code though, so no guarantees it'll
happen right away. On the plus side, it'll be more modular, so new
comics should be a lot easier to add. ;)

Meanwhile, if you look at the rssx search I wrote (lines 42-56), which
comx is based on, you'll see a much better way to handle the remoting
aspects.

Re: [DQSD-Users] "mwd /p" stopped working

2008-09-24 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Here's a temporary fix. It doesn't resolve everything, but the basic
functionality is back.

It looks like it's both a change to remove the "/cgi-bin" portion of the
path for word entries, but also a new bug in their code that wraps the
actual entries (by introduction of a few random characters before "entry
misc" in the class wrapper).

[DQSD-Users] Google Chrome

Re: [DQSD-Users] Addons

2008-07-21 Thread Shawn K. Hall
I have used most of the add-ons, and have the (3rd party) iptools addon
installed now, but have given up on most of the others over time. The
functionality exposed by addons is almost always available directly as a
search, so I use that method now - writing a replacement for it if I
have to.

I do think we should provide hooks for searches so they can chain
themselves in the "auto-" parsing featureset. It would make it a lot
easier to integrate things that have a consistent style and form, and
still be able to use DQSD in those situations where one has disabled the
search that is hard-coded into the auto- functionality now.

And, of course, I still think we should consider migrating to an xml
storage format so we can have a user-interface for building and
maintaining settings. The chrome idea is a good one, and I think it
would be quite useful for the novice market.

You know, I don't know how people function without DQSD. Seriously. I
have a client that uninstalled it over the weekend and called me up at
3am because her "calendar was gone". It was one of those "next time call
me first" moments, 'cause she deleted the user settings, too, which
included a couple searches I created just for her to manager her sites.
Sigh.

I really can't imagine having to manually do all the stuff DQSD does for
me.

Yes.

Unfortunately, I don't have the vista 'noir' theme to work with, so I
couldn't recreate the vista themes. If you can send me a little bit
larger image (I need more of the standard taskbar so I can extract the
background from it), I'm happy to provide the updated files to implement
the correct theming there. This goes for all of the Vista styles that
aren't correctly implemented to deal with multi-line styles.

It could be the IE6 option to "prevent scripts from running on your
computer". Check it here:

  In IE, tools > internet options > advanced > security > CHECK "allow
active content to run in files on my computer".

You may need to reboot, or turn off and back on DQSD (not simply reload)
in order to implement this on the deskband.

Hi Bob,

4.0.0.5 doesn't have all the files it should. There should be a variety
of image files in the install directory with "bottom" and "top" in the
file name, for the styles I was able to create layouts for.

> I would have assumed this is what is supposed to happen

Olive is light enough that the background doesn't interfere with the
text on it, so we aren't using an imposed text frame. It's the sole
exception in this case.

Neither of these two stylesheets were included within the 4.0.0.5
installation. Oops. ;)

While the files to create the multiline effect were not included within
the 4.0.0.5 release, I did not convert the "royale" themes to provide
the multiline effect. I don't have access to a machine that has these
desktop themes, so I can't replicate the layouts without a screenshot of
the taskbar or something. It's a very simple process, but without the
image, I can't do it. Anyone wanting to submit screenshots to me can do
so by email.

Re: [DQSD-Users] DQSD 4.0 released!

2008-06-06 Thread Shawn K. Hall
> Changes have now been committed to resolve this.

It occurs to me that I probably ought to say somewhere that due to the
way that the DQSD stylization works, people wanting to take advantage of
the multiline styles will need to run "configure > load color scheme >
..." in order to apply the new styles. This procedure overwrites the
previous theme.css file (which ships as an empty file, but is populated
by the *theme.css file last loaded through "configure"), so the OLD
theme will be preserved for anyone that upgrades. If you don't "load" a
new color scheme (or the same one again) the updated stylization will
not be applied.

Just thought I better put it in writing somewhere. :)

Are we using the xmphttprequest object? Or are we using the
msxml2.xmlhttp (and similar) objects? The first one is only available on
IE7 and up.

If it weren't with IE6, I would say that it was probably related to the
"enable native xmlhttp support" option in IE7. But since it's IE6, I
don't know what to think. If the specific search uses a local file cache
for processing or functionality, then it could be that the search is
failing based on permissions on the DQSD folder (add full rights to your
current user to all files to fix it).

2008-06-04 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Bob,

Sorry, we were talking at different issues. I thought you were trying to
separate DQSD from the taskbar completely, while you're trying to
integrate it into a multiline taskbar as a single row.

> I'm trying to, as you say below, have the DQSD bar
> as one row on the deskbar/taskbar.
>
> I'm able to do this with 4.0.0.3, but not with 4.0.0.4.

I installed 4.0.0.4 tonight for the first time in order to ensure my
changes would be compatible with the codebase, and after rebooting, and
quite by accident, caused DQSD to be a single row under my quick launch
bar.

I don't doubt you're having problems, I'm just saying that the current
4.0.0.4 release does not prevent you from using it as a single row
within a multiline taskbar, though it may be a pain to set it up the way
you want.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Positioning issue with 4.0.0.4

2008-06-02 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Bob,

> It's not SP3 and it's not true that the DQSD can't be moved at all.

What Kim is saying is that DQSD cannot be separated from the windows
deskbar. It must reside within your deskbar (the same region as the
start menu and system tray) or there may be issues, especially after you
reboot.

While it can usually function fine if you drag the toolbar from the
deskbar to another edge of the screen, separate from the start menu, and
use it there. It will need to be placed back in the deskbar before you
reboot or it may not work correctly on the next boot.

> Could this possibly be related to trying to fix the issue
> of DQSD in color schemes other than classic shrinking to
> half width when positioned below another toolbar?

The code I wrote to better handle multi-line taskbars has not been added
to the DQSD package yet. Kim released before I was able to make the time
to ensure that it was all clean and working to commit my changes. :(

However, I had once personally been very interested in having the DQSD
bar as one row on the deskbar, and while I have no resolution for it, I
was able to accomplish what I really wanted (multiline clock & multiline
DQSD entry and the inclusion of the quick-launch toolbar on the deskbar)
by changing the "clock short form" to be:
  clockshortform = "  \r\n MMM dd,  \r\n hh:mm A ";
This inserts carriage returns into the time/date at the "\r\n" - so you
could use them somewhere else if you prefer.

I've got a bit of catch-up to to do today, but will try to commit the
multiline changes tonight or tomorrow.

Shawn K. Hall

Re: [DQSD-Users] Minor Color Scheme Issue

2008-05-19 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Bob & Kim,

Yes, I do have a mod that will fix the styling to make it look like it
is better integrated within the taskbar, but it requires a change to the
search.htm file. The last time I made changes to the search.htm file
several people on the dev team got nervous, so I haven't pushed the
changes back through yet.

I don't personally use the colored styling within XP so I can't say
whether this will resolve everyones issues, but if it doesn't then I'm
sure it comes very very close. I did just test it within the 'blue'
scheme and it looks 100% integrated to me (top & bottom, colors, DQSD
box, and clock). And unlike the current styles, it also better handles
the margin & padding when using mutliline DQSD input and/or multiple
taskbar rows, but that, of course, requires changes to the stylesheets
for each layout - and those will need to be tested across different
systems to ensure that they're working fine.

However, it required changes to a couple things that are bigger than
just the scheme. It required a change to the resizing code that may
affect any custom personal styles anyone has incorporated, and since a
new layout object had to be created to wrap the rest of the DQSD code,
it's possible (though unlikely) that some of the code within searches
that affect the user interface could be affected. The 'gobutton'
functionality is not hampered at all, though, so this is probably just
me being overcautious.

Would you like me to post the changes here?

On a related note, someone (Kim?) said something about auto-detecting
the users' current Windows color scheme during installation, and setting
the default style to that. Any progress?

Regards,

Shawn K. Hall

Not directly, but there are other whois sources. Like "whsc". Try this:
  whsc 12pointdesign.com

The other one you can use is "whi" (WebHosting.info). I can't remember
offhand if I published this one yet (I like to test them a while first,
then forget):
  whi 12pointdesign.com

I like "whi" because it also provides a very large database of domain-IP
reverse lookups:
  whi google.com
  whi 64.233.167.99

Hi Tom,

Yep.

I played with it a bit tonight to see what the problem was, and they
indeed did change the way some of their forms are working (even provide
MD5 hashing now using random seeds). I fixed the code, then tested it.
Exactly half my tests failed. I spent no less than an hour fighting with
it trying to figure out why one user ID worked and another didn't. Then
I realized I recently changed the failing accounts' password and never
updated the prefs file. Oops. My bad.

Attached is a revised and working yy.xml. Really. Sigh.

The new system does have ONE caveat. It uses much more forceful cookies
from Yahoo. If you find that it continues to demand that you sign in to
an account you just logged out of, click the link to "sign in as a
different user" (then close the browser and "yy" again), otherwise those
cookies may never actually get removed. Signing out DOES NOT completely
remove them and it will try to make you login to the wrong account!

The internal disable functionality does NOT rename the files, so you end
up with the files still being parsed, but the functions are not loaded.
This causes the same extensive memory load, without any added value
(except, maybe, the ability to search the help for info about those
searches).

Sure, qsfreq is cool, but it's a change in processing and logic for most
people, and few people can do things a different way just because that
way is better. ;)

I usually use "pushd" and "popd", which I think are safer for directory
switches.

If you replace "%%s.xml.removed-search.txt" with "%%s.disabled" you'll
get the same effects as the webpage batch file, which would be useful
for consistency in naming so other tools could be added to the mgmt
interface and actually take effect later on.

It's possible that one of the scripts you've disabled is used within the
auto-parser or within another script. For example, "dns" is used within
the auto-parser, so could raise errors when a function from it is called
if the script does not exist. Same with the phone number lookup or math
functions. There are a couple of scripts and functions I wrote that rely
on the "vbsx" script - which might cause the error you're receiving.

Try re-enabling the scripts one by one (they're just renamed in the
search directory) and reloading it to see if it fixes it.

[DQSD-Users] flightview updated (fv.xml)

2007-11-28 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hello all,

I worked through some of the entries in the tracker tonight and fixed
the flightview search. If you have httpinst installed you can update
with:
  httpinst /u fv

Otherwise, you can replace it with the attached file and reload (!).
This version adds two additional syntaxes to the search, and fixes the
original search as well. And adds a little more documentation.

Syntax:
  fv [airport]
  fv [airline] [flight number]
  fv [airport] [airport] [time]

Examples:
  fv aa 2035
  fv sx 341
  fv jfk
  fv slc
  fv jfk slc m
  fv jfk slc night
  fv jfk den 16

Obtain real-time info on commercial flights. Type the two letter airline code followed by the flight number. Airline codes can be obtained from the drop down box on http://www.flightview.com";>www.flightview.com.

Even though flightview has airline codes for airlines throughout the world,
	I believe they only track flights in U.S. and Canadian airspace. Also, the
	flight you enter must be "active" - usually this seems to mean from an hour
	or two before takeoff until an hour or two after landing.

	Airline and Airport codes can be entered in upper or lower case.
Some common US Airline codes:

	AA - American Airlines
	CO - Continental Airlines
	DL - Delta Airlines
	B6 - Jet Blue
	NW - Northwest Airlines
	WN - Southwest Airlines
	SX - Skybus Airlines
	US - US Airways
	UA - United Airlines

Common Airports (examples only):

	DEN - Denver
	JFK - John F Kennedy
	SMF - Sacramento Metro
	SLC - Salt Lake City

Syntax:

	fv [airport]
	fv [airline] [flight number]
	fv [airport] [airport] [time]

Examples:

	fv aa 2035
	fv sx 341
	fv jfk

[DQSD-Users] New search: zaba - zabasearch.com people search

2007-08-15 Thread Shawn K. Hall
* zaba - ZabaSearch.com people search (Shawn K. Hall)

Attached.

This one was originally done by Gregory Krohne about 2 and a half years
ago, but it was lacking a couple parameters, and it just didn't operate
naturally. I've revised it quite a bit to make it take almost freeform
input. If you're creating searches that need to parse near freeform
input, take a look at the source here.

Here's a few examples:
  zaba George P. Burdell
  zaba George W. Bush, DC
  zaba George W. Bush, DC, 1946
  zaba jack, john smith, sonora, ca, 1930

The syntax of the last one there really demonstrates the advanced
features in ZabaSearch - the ability to submit more than one first name,
separated by commas.

Re: [DQSD-Users] yy login issues

2007-06-28 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hm. It wouldn't run using the default params (yyid) when no value was
passed, so I removed the call to nullArgs. I've replaced it with code
similar to the code for banyg with another mod, too, and it looks like
this is working the way I want - and you expect. ;) I also expanded the
help a bit.

This was theory only, I don't know if it makes a difference under the

Yes. Different uses require different syntax. When passing anything that
MIGHT have spaces in it to the command line it's critical that you use
the wrapping quotes.

Hi Michael,

Yep.

> movie doesn't work (ym does)
> mov   doesn't work

This could be because of alias ordering, try changing the order to:

mov|movie
movie|ym

...see if that changes anything. Though I don't think that it's good
form to use an alias for an alias anyway. The "mov" could be asserting
"movie" is a literal search in the new engine under Vista. Can't say.

> excel doesn't work
> exp   doesn't work
> word  doesn't work
> cpdoesn't work

Looks like "run" problems.

Are the applications each in your path OR in the "app paths" setting in
your registry (hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\app
paths\)?

It could also be that the "run" search is disabled. Does "run notepad"
in the search box do anything?

> tulsa works

Looks like all your problem searches are somehow related to the "run"
search.

Did you create a search named "gguk"? There is not one named that in the
standard release, so I am guessing what you actually did was create an
alias "ggug" for "gg %s /uk". If that's the case, it won't work.

The "defaultsearch" functionality is designed to work with actual
searches (files).

You can fake it by copying the following text to a new file name
"gguk.xml" in the localsearches directory:

  Google UK
  Search
  http://www.google.co.uk/

  <![CDATA[
function gguk(q){

I think this will do what you're after.

That's strange. It must be a Firefox thing. I use about two dozen
different DQSD login forms for different Google services, and none of
them ever use an existing window.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Odd Math Error

2007-05-20 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Richard,

> Is there no way to set DQSD to preform normal arithmetic
> functions?

You can use the VBSX function as a wrapper to force VB-style mathematic
operations. Here's an example:
  vbsx =cdbl(2156737.51 - 16123.85)

You can add an alias for this to localaliases.txt as so:
  m|vbsx =cdbl(%s)|Safe math|Safe math|Finance

Since you're calling it directly, and the formula isn't being simply
interpreted from the command-line, it is easy to raise errors by
submitting invalid values ("m 1/0"). So, be careful with that kind of
thing. ;)

You can use other math operators this way, too, like power (^) and
modulo (mod) and whole value division (\ - eliminates the remainder).
  m 10 ^ 8
  m 17 mod 4
  m 9 \ 2

And more:
http://www.w3schools.com/vbscript/vbscript_ref_functions.asp#math

I'll bet with a bit of hacking in calculate.js, it would be possible to
change the default behaviour for mathematic formulae to this processing
method. Personally, I could care less. The JS method has almost always
served my needs, and when it hasn't, Google fills in nicely.

Re: [DQSD-Users] RC3 install feebdack - script error with ff 2?

2007-05-16 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Tom,

> For the last number of months every time dqsd opened firefox
> 2 for the first time I get an error in the search.htm, see
> screenshot http://i2.tinypic.com/63weyqe.jpg

This type of thing happens to me primarily when I'm writing a new search
that requires the use of , an (&) ampersand, or it
attempts to evaluate a variable that may not be set. Since I use so many
(nearly a hundred) custom/local searches, I've faced this issue often
enough to despise & recognise it. So, my first guess is that it's not a
problem with DQSD per se, but a problem with one of your custom searches
or in a prefs or settings file.

When you upgraded, did you install COMPLETELY clean, or was there a
local search or setting that was preserved? If so, try removing (back up
to another folder, then REMOVE from the DQSD install folder) ALL of the
local searches and settings - anything that isn't in the clean 4.x
install. Then reload. I'll betcha it'll work.

Then gradually add settings and searches back, one by one, reloading and
testing, until it errs again. That will tell you what searches and
settings are broken. Then fix it. ;) If you would like help correcting
a specific search, please feel free to email me either here or offlist
(local searches can have sensitive information or procedures in them).

I have the following aliases in my localaliases.txt file:

mozx|run "C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox 2\firefox.exe" "%s"|Mozilla
FireFox 2.x Browser|Start Mozilla FireFox 2.x|Browsers

mozt|run "C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox 2\firefox.exe" -new-tab
"%s"|Mozilla FireFox 2.x Browser, New Tab|Start Mozilla FireFox 2.x, New
Tab|Browsers

mozw|run "C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox 2\firefox.exe" -new-window
"%s"|Mozilla FireFox 2.x Browser, New Window|Start Mozilla FireFox 2.x,
New Window|Browsers

moz1|run "C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox\firefox.exe" "%s"|Mozilla
FireFox 1.x Browser|Start Mozilla FireFox 1.x|Browsers

Firefox 1.5 is installed in "C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox\"
Firefox 2.x is installed in "C:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox 2\"

I can open a new tab in Firefox 2 using:
  mozt 12pointdesign.com

Or a new window like:
  mozw 12pointdesign.com

As for how to configure it to use new windows vs new tabs for all
searches... I don't know. Have you tried?:
  reuseBrowserWindowMode = 0;

While the docs say this is only effective for IE, it might work with
Firefox under the new core.

If that doesn't work, try changing line 11 of defer_tools.js from:
DQSDLauncher.OpenDocument(url);
To:
DQSDLauncher.OpenDocument(url, " -new-window");

Change line 30 from:
  DQSDLauncher.OpenDocument(params[1], params[3]);
To:
  DQSDLauncher.OpenDocument(params[1], "-new-window " + params[3]);

And line 34 from:
  DQSDLauncher.OpenDocument(path);
To:
  DQSDLauncher.OpenDocument(path, " -new-window");

While I can't guarantee that will work, it looks like the best shot.
These changes will probably cause errors if you ever choose to switch to
IE or a different default browser, so keep that in mind.

Good luck.

Hi Tom,

You need to do a preliminary "get" of the page and parse the results to
obtain the UPLOAD_IDENTIFIER. I do this in a couple searches... Icap is
a good example (darn, looks like the service is either broken or they
changed the way it works). Anyway, it does a preliminary get and then
reads the resulting text and obtains the form token, same as what you're
trying to do. I wrote one to "clean" SourceForge lists, too, but it
looks like that one may have never got uploaded? If you can't figure out
the regex, let me know and I'll take a look for you.

I think you might have a problem with it though, since the IE security
model disables the ability to script the source of input="file" tags.
You could do it by pushing the whole thing through your own wrapper - a
script that handles the upload, too, and then returns the resulting
content to read the key and opens up the "player" view for you.

Re: [DQSD-Users] Running from command line

Hi Tom,

> Is there a way to run something you would type in the search

Sorry this is so late - I'm cleaning out the folder. ;)

Is this question directed at running a command that you might run at a
command prompt (dir c:\ > c:\list.txt) within DQSD, or running something
that you might run within DQSD at the command prompt (c:\> yy
myaccount)?

For the first, you can use "run cmd.exe /k %s", or shorten it a bit more
with an alias:
  run cmd.exe /k dir c:\ > c:\list.txt
Swap "/k" with "/c" if you don't want the command prompt to remain
afterwards.

For the other, uh, no - not yet. At least, not to my knowledge. Sounds
like a good idea though. It could be accomplished with a script passed
through cscript.exe.

The easiest way would be to change the default search in DQSD to
wikipedia. Do this by editing "localprefs.js" to add this line:
  defaultsearch="wik";

Reload DQSD (!).

Now, instead of 'right-clicking', just highlight the text you want to
search in Wikipedia, and drag and drop it into DQSD. It'll search in
Wikipedia by default from then on.

HOWEVER, this will ALSO set your default search action anytime you
simply type text into the DQSD window to searching Wikipedia unless a
different search is specified. To search google prefix the search text
with "gg":
  gg search text

I hope that works for what you're after.

The differences between F8 and up and down is that F8 lets you "search"
your history. Type in a few characters from within a search you've used
before and then press F8 (when it works) and it will review the searches
you've used with that phrase in it. I use it ALL the time.

Hi Roger,

> How do I configure dqsd to default to Google Australia's

I don't see a way to do this by setting a variable anywhere, but you can
make a couple minor adjustments to the gg.xml file to make it work.

Open gg.xml in any text editor. To minimize "changes" and just make a
single addition, you can insert the line below UNDER line 138:
  local_meta = "cr=countryAU"; local_tld = "com.au";

That essentially changes the default to Australia.

Some of the changes from 3.1.9.1 to 3.1.9.2 can be migrated directly
into your installation as text. While I would recommend you just upgrade
directly, you may have some benefit from migrating text from a cached
version, or a CVS/SVN working copy, into your install folder. Of course,
back it up first.

There have been several attempts to do this but they've thus far been

Hi Bethany,

I'm including you on my response since you are not a member of the Users
list. I recommend you join it if you are interested in the ongoing
development and support of DQSD. We are currently in the process of
alpha-testing the 4.0 branch, already resolves much of the XP trouble
many have faced, and it also has ballooned the number of included
"searches" to well over 300. At current count I believe there are about
375, and I have another 10 or so left in my upload queue, waiting for
CVS to work properly again.

You can still see the latest stable build (3.1.9.2) on the DQSD.net

If the help window appears, does it raise a security warning or "yellow

Do searches which use activex objects and direct http requests - like

I don't use XP, so while I can say with assurance that it can be done on
either Windows 2003, 2000, or 98 - it's a stretch for me to assume it
can be done on XP.

The "easy" way is to grab the left shangle of the DQSD window and drag
it to the VERY bottom of the taskbar, then release. It will look like
nothing is going to happen - but after the screen settles it will be the
bottom "row" of a multi-line taskbar. You can then drag your Quick
Launch toolbar beside it - and any other toolbars you may use - so it
doesn't eat any more space on it's own than necessary.

Again, I don't use XP, so I never had to face the "button collection"
problem others using XP do. But I do use a two row taskbar, and it
serves my purposes very well. I frequently use very long queries or
commands and having a multiline DQSD that's about 200 px wide (long
enough for the long date + time to fit on one line). I have the Quick
Launch toolbar immediately to the right of that (wide enough for four
icons to fit inside and a chevron to reach the rest - with
well-organized folders inside that have the bulk of my applications),
and the rest of my taskbar to the right of that. The clock that would
normally sit in my tray is disabled. Nothing but useable real estate in
my taskbar. And, I use the Floax function (more info at "floax?" to
access dynamic stored searches (like length of the clipboard, common
string manipulations (replace unix-style line endings with windows',
quick-sort, case conversion, and a couple custom aliases)) through the
"go" button (the magnifying glass).

I imagine this is "just another" issue with IE on XP.

Try this table instead:
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/sgml/entities.html#iso-88591
You'll need to know what the character is called, and I assume you
intendedto present the latin capital letter E with acute, which is 201,
and the O acute, which is 210.
  É  and  Ò
This works in my tests. It should be noted, though, that these entities
may fail if the font used is not a latin font. While this is unlikely,
it's something you should be aware of.

Just dug through several of the searches I committed until I found one.
IPHunt. Go here:
  http://www.searchmee.com/web-info/ip-hunt.php
Click in the first box. Click the DQSDWiz. Fill it out however you want
and save it. Look at the form action attribute.

Hmm... From a little digging into their source it looks like it might be
because they didn't close a quote in their meta tags properly (bad html)
and they don't include a carriage return in the source until after the
opening form tag. Granted, that's a problem, but is there a way that the
wizard can fix it anyway?

[DQSD-Users] New searches and a problem with the search wizard

2006-02-09 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hello all,

I've got a "couple" new searches to add. For now, I'm just going to post
them here, and if anyone has any feedback for them let me know right
away so I can correct it.

New Searches
* allpod - AllPodcasts Podcast promotional engine (Shawn K. Hall)
* ausr - Australian Domain Registry search (Shawn K. Hall)
* autolink - AutoLink automatic text-linking from supplied text (Shawn
K. Hall)
* ay2z - aytozon is a mashup for shopping eBay and Amazon
simultaneously. (Shawn K. Hall)
* babyname - ThinkBabyNames provides a broad searchable index of names
and their meanings, genders and various spellings. (Shawn K. Hall)
* becom - Become search (Shawn K. Hall)
* blinkx - Blinkx.tv television/media clips (Shawn K. Hall)
* brainb - BrainBoost answer engine, powered by Answers.com (Shawn K.
Hall)
* checkdns - CheckDNS provides realtime DNS analysis for domain and
server problems (Shawn K. Hall)
* chmoog - Chemical name and suppliers search (Shawn K. Hall)
* ciseek - Competitive Intelligence Resource Index (Shawn K. Hall)
* colorss - ColorCombos.com was built to help web developers quickly
select and test color combinations. (Shawn K. Hall)
* dblt - DoubleTrust (Yahoo+Google results) (Shawn K. Hall)
* defpass - Huge default password database for hardware and software of
all genres (Shawn K. Hall)
* domdb - DomainsDB login, ip, name server and domain search (Shawn K.
Hall)
* dragondb - DragonSoft Vulnerability Database (Shawn K. Hall)
* folkmed - Folk Medicine archive at UCLA (Shawn K. Hall)
* iphunt - IPHunt, an IP dig tool with CIDR support (Shawn K. Hall)
* msns - MSN Search (Shawn K. Hall)
* ohno - OhNoRobot text-based comic search (Shawn K. Hall)
* pys - Python Search (Shawn K. Hall)
* sbase - SenderBase email statistics aggregation (Shawn K. Hall)
* xforce - X-Force security database (Shawn K. Hall)

Modified Searches
* a9 - added maps feature (Shawn K. Hall)

I've got a huge list of additional sites to add, but these were either
the most urgent (to me) or the simplest to add (by the search wizard).

Which leads me to... The search wizard seems to have an issue with some
sites where it will append garbage to the action url, and instead of
collecting the actual target from the site it uses the current page name
with three high-bit characters after it. It looks almost like it might
be a UTF-8 BOM marker, but I admit I didn't look into it very hard.

Is anyone familiar with YubNub ( http://www.yubnub.org/ )? It looks like
they're a reincarnation of DQSD for the web, with a rather huge library
of searches/functions. The benefit? No installation. The problem? No
installation. It's not a deskbar, like DQSD is, so you just don't have
the same breadth of local abilities that you'd have with something that
has the internal functionality bound to the system. I use WIN+S so much
now that at clients locations I get outrageously frustrated if they
don't have DQSD. I can't imagine those poor souls that live without it.

First, javascript is case sensitive, are you sure your "mozid" being
passed, and the one in localprefs - are the same case as the requests
you're making?

You might try catching the error in the second try{}.

  try{
document.mozf.username.value = mozids[0];
document.mozf.password.value = mozids[1];
  }catch(e){
alert("Failure!\n" + e.number + "::" + e.description);

RE: [DQSD-Users] establishing pattern for unique url per date

Hi Tom,

> Thanks a lot for the pointers. Interesting stuff that I
> am trying to pull down from over my head. When you say
> to save as a html fine do you mean to do this like as
> in the comx.xml search?

No, actually this is a self-encapsulated sample.

It will run directly as an HTML file (assuming your security permissions
allow scripts to run in the local zone). Copy the contents between the
dividers into a new text file and save it as "test.htm" on your drive.
Then open it up in IE. Click the different numbers/dates in order to
accomplish the download and display of the comic.

The "showImage" function can be modified to function as the script code
within the search with very little change. Find one that takes dates as
a parameter and use that to build the input value (in this case sImage).
Then use the new mwd search mods or comx search as a base to build the
display portion (or just pop a new browser up with the URL generated).

On a completely unrelated note - I'm sorry I'm taking so long with these
changes folks! I've got a week and a halfs work to catch up on and have
had more onsite jobs in the last 3 days than I usually have in a month.
When I get back from this one (leaving now) I'll devote the rest of my
day to DQSD. Really!

I would just use an XmlHttp hit the first time, pattern match "uf*.gif",
and then a second request for the image. This is some code I've migrated
from one of my homebrew samples. Save it as a new htm file:

'//

var ksRoot = "<a  rel="nofollow" href="http://www.userfriendly.org/cartoons/"">http://www.userfriendly.org/cartoons/"</a>;;

function showImage( sImage ){

try{
//attempt to obtain the content

sImage;
  var xmlHttp = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XmlHttp");
  xmlHttp.open("GET", sUrl, false);
  xmlHttp.send();

//get the response content from the remote site
  var sBody = xmlHttp.responseText;
  var rx = /(\/archives\/[0-9a-zA-Z]+\/uf[\d]+\.gif)/g;

  var r; var i = 0;
  if ((r = rx.exec(sBody)) != null){
sParsed = r[1];
  }
  sParsed = sParsed.substr(1);

}catch(e){
  alert( "It didn't work!" + "\n" + e.number + "::" +
e.description);
}

var o = document.getElementById('testimg');
o.src = ksRoot + sParsed;

RE: [DQSD-Users] new mwdx search (Merriam-Webster search, results in a pop-up window)

2006-02-01 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Kim,

> ...see if it works for you...

Works fine for me, however, may I suggest offering an option that can
alternate the functionality of mwd through the localprefs?

This code will do it (replaces line 28):
if (typeof strMWDPopup == "undefined") strMWDPopup = 0;
if(( args.switches.length > 0 ) || (strMWDPopup !== 0))

Then if someone has the "strMWDPopup" variable set to anything other
than zero the dictionary lookups will appear in the popup, while
otherwise (and default) they appear in a new window.

This does not take into account situations where the user wants to
default to popups but wants to visit the site, though.

> XmlHttp is acting up on my machine, so I can't see if it
> works properly...

In my reading (having not tested it yet myself, in part because of this)
I've seen that IE7 has some XmlHttp+JavaScript issues. The consensus
from those I've seen discussing it is "don't use IE7" - no workarounds
are available.

2005-10-11 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Tom,

Yeah, this is probably WAY too late to be of much use...

> I was looking at a couple of website logins which

> perhaps seen this?

Yes. I've posted some workarounds and some scalping engines for this
type of thing before. Look at the dq (internal) and icapture searches
for examples. Basically, the process is to use an xmlhttp request to
download the prompt, then extract (using regex) the seed/challenge, and
fudge the form you POST to include those values within the form. It's
important to either duplicate the form or generate the POST data
dynamically in order to avoid adding various extra fields (challenges)
to the DQSD-level form that will persist beyond the current request.

RE: [DQSD-Users] DQSD web site

2005-05-26 Thread Shawn K. Hall
Hi Gregory,

> How hard would it be to make a DQSD search web site?
> Could the deskbar code be ported easily to a web page,
> so non-Windows users could enjoy DQSD?

This is one of my pet projects, which is currently less than half
done.

It's not simple, because a lot of the searches do more than simply
GET or POST forms - they create objects like MSXML and RegEx that
strict browsers will not allow. There's also the security risk -
some of the searches let you run vbscript or javascript and doing so
poses the question to whether to push that type of thing to the
client, or to the server, and if the server, how do you sanitize an
environment where it is intended to provide the ability to execute
random input? I haven't had much time to devote to the project over
the last few months, but intend to finish it eventually. :)

It's supposed to.

The feedback from the only person that responded said it worked. Of

I modded one of the xp themes so it *should* work in vertical mode a
while back. Try it out and let me know if it works for you. If it
does then I'll be committing those changes to all of the XP themes.

Have you made any other customizations from the base installation?
Adding/removing searches, localprefs options, adding additional
aliases...?

In a private email please send me what appears on the clipboard when
you 'run' this in DQSD:
  vbsx :document.body.outerHTML
You should be able to simply run that in DQSD, open notepad and
paste in there (it'll return the results of all of the generated
html, so if you have any private/personal/sensitive information,
please REVIEW that text before saving it but do NOT remove any
carrige returns), save it as text and attach that to a new message
to me privately.

Also use this one to see if it's returning okay:
  jsx alert(DQSDLauncher.AppDataDirectory)
This should just pop up with something like:
  c:\documents and settings\brian\application data\dqsd\
If it doesn't then let me know.

This could be a security issue, related to not having rights to
'script' activex components (necessary for the path generation of
the temporary file and the xmlhttp object). If you've made any
changes to the default behavior of how IE operates on the system
please describe the changes made.

To my knowledge there is no hijacker for DQSD.

However, some of the shortcut keys may seem like they are hijacking
the search. The allrecipes search is "ar" - so if your search
includes those two characters, the state abbreviation for Arkansas,
for example, then you'll have issues.

There have been a couple of people complaining about their default
search changing unexpectedly in the most recent release. Thoguh I
have no idea how this could happen, the 'fix' is to check both your
localprefs.js and preferences.js to ensure that the "defaultsearch"
is still "gg" or whatever you expect/desire it to be, like so:

defaultsearch="gg";

Changing this line will require a reload (!) of DQSD.
