Re: [Drakelist] MN-2700/B-1000 use
Damien, There is a general "rule of thumb" that suggests that open wire feedline should be at least 4 to 5 times the feedline conductor spacing from *anything* that is conductive. So, if your feedline is 1 inch in width you want to keep it 4 to 5 inches from anything made of metal. Of course, this would include another feedline. There are two issues here: 1) If open wire line runs near something metal (conductive) and one of the wires is closer to the metal than the other then the line will become unbalanced at that point. This will cause the line to radiate. 2) If open wire line runs near something metal (conductive) and the wires are equidistant from the conductive object then balance will be retained but there will be an impedance bump on the line. This means the line is no longer "flat" and will induce reactive components. Issue #2 is of less concern than #1 so the second rule of thumb is that when you must run your feedline near a conductive object you should try to make the two wires be the same distance away from it. That will retain balance. Going through the pine trees is going to be fine if the feedline wires are insulated. If the wire is not insulated more care should be taken to ensure that it does not come in contact with anything. Even pine trees become rather conductive when it rains. Even with insulated feedlines you'll want to minimize physical contact with the trees to the extent possible. Trees move and may eventually degrade your feedlines. 73, Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com On 09/11/2013 08:45 AM, Damien Mannix wrote: I have just been fortunate enough to obtain an MN-2700 with Balun. Re: [Drakelist] Ten-Tec and Drake Compared
I used to have a B-Line and loved it. Then I got a C-Line and I love it -- it's a keeper for the duration. On the Ten Tec gear, I picked up a really nice Corsair-II some years back and it seemed to me that it was almost designed to be a C-Line killer. It was a great CW rig with PBT, great filters etc. With the matching power supply and external VFO it was even about the same size as the Drake Twins. What was better than the C-Line was: 1) No tuning up. No big deal for rag chewing but really nice for contests. Especially NAQP where guys constantly ask me to move to another band to work them there. 2) Dual *simultaneous* VFO. With the external VFO you could listen to both VFO frequencies at the same time! This was the greatest feature of all time for working DX. You could listen to the DX on one VFO and the pile-up on the other with no flipping of switches. Truly remarkable feature that I do miss. 3) Unthinkably smooth full QSK. Hey, I liked the Corsair-II so much I sold it and bought an Omni-VII which I also like a lot (although I do miss that dual simultaneous VFO thing). But, through it all, the C-Line is still on center stage in my shack. It has more cool factor than any rig I've owned. Ever.. BTW, on the "you'll need the Ten Tec service department" issue I had the old Corsair-II for years and I still have a Centaur amp and the Omni-VII. I needed the Service Department for the bandswitch KNOB on the Centaur amp which gave out after many years. Cost me about $3 including shipping as I recall. Oh wait; that was the Parts Department. Re: [Drakelist] Station upgrade
You have it right. Up to 5/8 wavelength a vertical can be an excellent antenna. Beyond 5/8 wavelength more and more RF radiates at a high angle and the low angle lobe becomes secondary and continues to decrease in strength as the frequency goes up. So, for a 43' vertical: Length: 43.00 Frequency: Wavelength: Wavelength: Degrees: 1.825 0.085 4/47 30.7 3.550 0.166 16/9759.7 5.368 0.251 1/ 4 90.3 7.050 0.329 27/82 118.5 10.120 0.473 26/55 170.1 14.050 0.656 21/32 236.2 18.150 0.848 39/46 305.2 21.050 0.983 58/59 353.9 24.950 1.165 1 16/97 419.5 28.100 1.312 1 5/16 472.4 Since 5/8 == 0.625 you can see that on 20 meters the antenna is just a bit over 5/8 wavelength. Beyond 20 meters the antenna gets pretty long. Most of the commercial 43' antennas have a UNUN at the feedpoint (bad idea in a reactive circuit), suggest 150' of coax (the losses make the SWR measured at the rig look "better") and suggest a tuner in the shack. I's suggesting that all three of those ideas are serious compromises made for the sake of convenience. Of course, in that scenario the antenna will radiate some RF, it will work. It's just that it won't work to anywhere near it's potential. And, to call the antenna an "all band" setup is a serious disservice to the radio community. Above 20 meters the performance will be very poor as the majority of the radiated RF will be Lost In Space. 73, -Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com Damien Mannix wrote: A most interesting thread. However may I ask for a clarification please? I have always understood, mainly from Bill Orr's wonderful but out of print books, that a 5/8 vertical had the lowest angle main lobe and hence was superior for DX to a 1/4 wave vertical, all othrer factors being equal. Is it only when longer than 5/8 that the antenna is transformed into a 'cloud warmer' or have I got it all wrong? Hope I am not being too stupid or pedantic. Re: [Drakelist] Station upgrade?
I think a 43 foot vertical (with sufficient radials) would make a decent antenna on 160 meters and an excellent antenna on 80, 40 and 30 meters. On 20 meters the antenna is a bit more than 5/8 wavelength in length and a significant portion of the radiated RF will go nearly straight up and will not be reflected by the ionosphere due to the high angle. This gets worse as you go up in frequency. Could you work people on 20 and above? Sure, but it would be on a secondary lobe as the primary and strongest lobe of RF will be "lost in space". Above 20 meters a 43 foot vertical is really a long wire pointed straight up. The other issue is that the required antenna coupler should be mounted at the base of the antenna to be fully effective. Yes, an apparent match condition could be achieved by using a coupler in the shack but that apparent match only serves to make the rig happy. Considerable RF is burned off as heat in the mismatched coax run to the antenna. It would also be interesting to measure the losses in the matching unun. If it's a ferrite or iron core those losses could be significant because UNUN's and BALUN's are not operating within their design spec if they are operating in an environment where the impedance is not purely resistive. RF transformers of this type are not meant to be used in reactive circuits. In my opinion, the antenna manufactures do a disservice to the community by promoting vertical antennas that are longer than 5/8 wavelength. Yes, you can get a decent SWR if you use 150 feet of lossy coax and an in-shack coupler. Yes, you can get a decent match with a 3/4 wavelength antenna. But, having a decent match and a decent antenna system can be two very different animals. OTOH, I applaud the use of non-resonant antenna designs. Being non-resonant makes for an easier job of impedance matching on harmonically related frequencies such as we enjoy in our HF spectrum. If you are primarily interested in 160 through 30 meters then I'd say the 43' vertical would be a good choice. If you're primarily interested in 20 and above then I'd go with a shorter vertical. In either case, I'd do my impedance matching at the base of the antenna. If you want all-band coverage and don't want to fool with an external coupler then I'd look at an all band vertical that has traps or stubs or variable length or *something* that makes the antenna a reasonable electrical height on the bands of interest.. Of course, this is all opinion and worth maybe a bit less than what you paid for it! ;-) 73, -Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com Michael & Sue Trussell wrote: The weather and old age have taken its toll on my old AV5 Cushcraft 5 band vertical antenna. Re: [Drakelist] 8 pole filter
On first glance it *seems* like the more poles, the better. Certainly, the skirts will be steeper and the bandwidth at the 60 DB point will be more narrow. But, there is a price to pay for this additional selectivity -- group delay. The more poles you you have in the filter the worse the group delay spec will be. So, static crashes and other impulse signals tend to get stretched out. This can lessen the quality of the listening experience. Just another thing to stay up late, worrying about. ;-) 73, -Doug, W7KF http://www.w7kf.com Curt Nixon wrote: GM Neil: Generally speaking, the more poles in the filter, the more it will resemble a "Perfect" filter... ___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

I haven't tracked the receivers for about a year but at that time R4-B prices were averaging $178. But, that was with only 3 data points. The high was $233. Probably higher now. Closing prices tend to be all over the map depending on how well the seller presents his item, the sellers reputation, the sun spot cycle, etc. etc. For example, lately, I've been watching T-4XC prices (thinking of picking up a spare). And, with 24 data points: Low:$153 Avg:$272 High: $580 With 72 data points, the L-4B: Low:$350 Avg:$722 High: $1200 With 71 data points, the MN-2000: Low:$75 Avg:$217 High: $345 My strategy is to look for really nice gear at average prices. The spreadsheet helps me know what is a good deal and what isn't. There is a fairly continuous stream of Drake gear for sale there and here on the list. I had to remove the shaft coupling that controls the crystal selector (the gear driven shaft) and rotate that shaft upright so I could get the soldering iron down to the bottom of the 2nd wafer on the bandswitch. I re-flowed the connections to the switch and BINGO! Full power on 160 meters! OK, I've put the 160 meter crystal in the T-4XC and I'm seeing the same results as when it was in the R-4C. No output (well, about 1 watt) on transmit but excellent reception. I tested with the TRANSCEIVE switch in both XMTR and SEPARATE modes and got the same symptoms. Switching the crystal to the T-4XC eliminates the receiver as a possible problem. And the problem does only occur as the transmitter warms up. I get normal operation on all other bands so I can't believe it's a tube. And, the crystal is oscillating since I receive good signals on 160. I've put the T-4XC on the bench and put my 'scope on pin 2 (grid) of the 6EJ7 premix tube and temporarily grounded pin 3 (cathode). I see -0.93 VDC with any crystal (including the 160 meter crystal) and -1.04 VDC with the VFO. I'm thinking the crystal is OK. The symptoms are normal power output on 160 for a minute or two after initial turn-on, then power output drops off to near 0 watts and does not return until the rig has been allowed to go completely cold. Operation on all other bands is normal. I'm stumped... 73, -Doug, W7KF -- Submissions:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

[drakelist] T-4XC output on 160 Meters fades...
Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Here's an odd one.. I just flipped on the rig and tuned up on 160. Everything went well, and I tuned up to 100 watts out as I normally do. Then, while waiting for the 3-500s to warm up I switched in the antenna to touch up the antenna coupler. And, as I was sending a string of dits the output faded to near zero watts. I shifted to 80 meters and tuned up -- 100 watts out, no problem. Back to 160. No power output... Turned the rig off and came back 15 minutes later and tried again. I warmed up the T-4XC for a minute, hit the key and had 100 watts out on 160. So, I let it sit for 5 minutes and tried again -- no power out. It *seems* like as the rig warms up the power fades to zero (on 160 only). All other bands are fine. [drakelist] T-4XC hanging in transmit mode
Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- [I posted on this a while back but am just getting around to it.] My T-4XC has been intermittently "hanging" in transmit mode on CW. Everything runs along fine but periodically when I stop sending the transmitter doesn't seem to drop out of TX mode and normal bias current is registered on the TX meter. During these episodes there is no RF output (unless I hit the key again then I get normal RF out). If I then send a long string of dits when I stop the T/R function usually resumes normal operation - for a while. Today I pulled the AC-4 out of the MS-4 and measured the various voltages: High B+ 683 VDC with 0.4 VAC ripple Low B+ 278 VDC with 0.12 VAC ripple Bias-59.5 VDC with 0.022 VAC ripple Which all seem a bit high but mostly nominal. The bias range is from -45 to -95. The ripple figures are peak to peak as measured on my 'scope. I poked around underneath the AC-4 and I don't see anything that looks 'wrong'. I was able to reproduce this problem this morning but I am unable to reproduce the problem now that I've fooled around with the AC-4. For the life of me, it *feels* like the T/R relay is simply hanging up when transitioning from transmit to receive. But, I'd rather develop a theory based on something other than what I *feel*.. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I oughta be looking at? Re: [drakelist] An Introduction & a question about keyer for T-4XB
Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Garey, Heh.. Yes, I started with a bug. Then, built a device that would send dashes when I pressed the dash side of the bug. It's relay was in parallel with the bug's output. Of course, as soon as I put this frankenstein device in service I realized how stupid it was. I then built a keyer using a pair of 12AT7's. Loved it! But, I lusted after the TO keyer the local club was using to teach the novice class. Eventually the owner (a SK for decades now) just gave it to me! Still have it and wouldn't part with it for anything.. But, then I got the Nye for use on ships -- it was reputed to key anything and I couldn't see packing the TO around with me.. My first week with that key and it's dot and dash memory was a hellish experience! But then I got used to it and now I have a really tough time using the TO. That infernal dot/dash memory allows one to become sloppy. The TO Keyer does NOT tolerate sloppiness! I'll have to give V9 a shot and see how badly I can send. I had to drag out the manual and check it out. I used to be able to send good code with my W9TO keyer but bought a new Nye keyer in the mid-1980s along with a Bencher Iambic key. I never learned how to use iambic mode and don't care about it. However, I did become accustomed to the dot and dash memory and now I can hardly send without it -- especially below 25 wpm or so.. So, the TO keyer is not getting much use anymore. (But it looks *so* good with the Drake 4-Line!) The Nye and the CMOS-4 both have dot / dash memory and the memory function works even with a non-iambic key. With an iambic key connected to the CMOS-4, I don't find *any* mode that is not iambic capable. What V mode are you using? Are you running V9 with no dot/dash memory? And, more generally, what is the difference between Curtis, Accukeyer and Logikey modes? I've tried the various modes now and other than dot and dash memory options I don't see much difference. It does nothing for atmospheric noise but, somewhere in my neighborhood, is a noise generator that is very intermittent. The noise blanker knocks it down by two and a half S-units whenever it appears. It's pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the noise is so intermittent that I have no clue what it is or where it is. It comes on a few times per month and usually lasts for less than an hour. (Well, probably more often -- I'm not on the air 24x7.) [drakelist] OT: WINMAIL.DAT info. Was: Tech Assistance on Drake R4C

WINMAIL.DAT is an attachment that a Microsoft mail client attaches to an outgoing email. It is only visible when the recipient email client is not capable of rendering Microsoft Rich Text Format (RTF) data. The file contains RTF information, typically font names, styles, sizes, etc. To a MS mail client it appears as a 'fancy' looking email -- not plain text. To non-MS mail clients it will appear as a binary or UUENCODED file attachment. I don't know of any exploits using WINMAIL.DAT but since I run Solaris I don't really pay attention to Windows exploits.. BTW, the sender of these emails can *prevent* this from happening by finding and unchecking the option that is usually named something like: "Always Send To This Recipient In Rich Text Format". 73, -Doug, W7KF -- Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

Just following up here.. I replaced C107 with a 250VDC 47mfd electrolytic capacitor. Actually, I left C107 physically in place as it's a dual capacitor in a can and is mounted on the chassis. I didn't look to see what the other capacitor in the can is connected to. Time was short, I was installing the new cap about an hour before the CW Sweepstakes contest started Saturday. I'm going to look for a can replacement for a long term solution. Or maybe replace the other half but leave the can in place for cosmetic reasons. There is room under the chassis for the two new components. Meantime, the sidetone is now great! I just spent 24 hours listening to it during the contest. BTW, my antenna makes me a non-contender (going to have to build an amp) but the Drake C-line performed admirably! Man-0-man, I love this gear!! 73, -Doug, W7KF -- Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

[drakelist] T4X-C Sidetone
Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- To celebrate my 40th year as a ham I thought I'd dust off the R4-C / T4X-C and enter the CW Sweepstakes this year. The vintage of the gear seems to match well with the vintage of the license and, to a lesser extent, the licensee.. Anyway, I fired the rig up last night and find that the CW sidetone is more or less continuous and really weak and kinda watery sounding. I have in mind replacing C-129 but that requires a trip to the local electronics shop. Should I pick up anything else during that trip? I mean, are there any other components that might be weak that I ought to consider grabbing while I'm in town? Of course, the lesson here is to test one's rig more than one day before the big contest! Heh. Whoever said wisdom comes with age obviously wasn't old enough to know better.. 73, -Doug, W7KF -- Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --

Yes, especially true in the case of a single layer set of windings on the core, typical of RF baluns. In power xfmrs the primary is usually wound closest to the iron core for better saturation. The secondary is wound around the primary. So those xfmrs work better when the primary *is* the primary. And, yes, I completely agree with your idea of switching the primary and secondary around to get the best match. If your configuration allows this then the 4:1 balun would likely be advantageous. > As for putting the balun on the reactive side, yes the school of though > is currently not to do that. Unfortunately the MN-2000 does not lend > itself to putting a balun on the input side. True. And, if the balun is well (over) rated I think it will work fine on the reactive side. Not perfect but who cares? You'll still be on the air and having fun! > One could also look into the Palstar or other balanced tuners. For open wire feedline, I think a balanced coupler is ideal. I think the MN-2000 is excellent for anything fed with coax like a G5RV, trap dipole, etc. It really is a great coupler, easily handles full power, warc bands, etc. 73, -Doug, W7KF -- Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --
Re: [drakelist] MN-2000 with ladder line
Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- > I think a 4:1 balun would be more appropriate. I think that is what the > balun for the MN-2000 had as an option from Drake. Well, yes, it *might* be more appropriate. Or not. Depends on whether the antenna is short or long on the various frequencies of interest. If it's short, then a 1:1 would be a better choice. A short antenna presents a very low resistance and running a 12 ohm antenna (not unusual) through a 4 to 1 transformer is going to be hard to match with any tuner. If it's always long then a 4:1 might be better. Also, the length of the feedline makes a difference. If it's a length that would effectively transform low and high impedances into moderate impedances then a 1:1 would be better. If the feedline is near an even multiple of a half wave at any F/O then a wider range of high / low impedances will be encountered and either a 1:1 or a 4:1 might work, or not, depending on the frequency. And, finally, I must point out that there is a credible school of thought that suggests that using a balun on the reactive side of a tuner is not the best design. Apparently, baluns tend to work best at their design impedance, losing efficiency as the reactive component of the circuit increases. Certainly, any balun so placed should be *way* overrated to minimize losses. If it were me, I'd go with a feedline of 31 or 93 feet long (assuming an open wire feedline velocity factor of 0.88) and use a BIG 1:1 balun. But, it's not me and this advice is worth no more, and maybe less, than what you paid for it.. 73 and see ya on the air! -Doug, W7KF -- Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: www.zerobeat.net - sponsored by www.tlchost.net --
Re: [drakelist] Roofing filter for CW contesting?
Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- Hi, Bob, Garey, Al and others, Thanks for the info and your time. It's really just CW contesting that I want to improve. I like the idea of the CF/600 but I don't want to fool around with replacing the switch, adding SSB filters, etc. I'm perfectly content with the operation of the rig on SSB where all I do is chew the rag with a few old cronies. I'd be inclined to get the CF/600 if I could easily switch between it and the stock filter. What's the story on using extra Mode-switch contacts? That sounds interesting.. BTW, I have a full set of 2nd IF filters, a 1.8, 0.5 and 0.25. Oh, and the Noise Blanker too, although I don't often have the kind of noise it works on so I don't suppose I'll miss it if I go to the CF/600 on CW. [drakelist] Roofing filter for CW contesting?
Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang -- I've been reading the material available on various web sites and thinking about adding a first IF, "roofing", filter to my R-4C. I use the rig for rag chewing on CW (and occasionally SSB) and also for CW contests. The new filter would only be to enhance CW ops during contests. But, normal SSB operation must be retained. There is the Sherwood option, the 600 Hz first IF filter. I'm not sure I'm reading the Sherwood Engineering web site correctly but it *appears* that one would need the filter, the filter switch kit and the custom front panel switch. That option totals $300. There is also the GUF-1 from International Radio. It's 8 KHz so not quite the same thing but no doubt a huge improvement. That option is $120. Any thoughts or experiences? 73, -Doug, W7KF -- On Behalf of Doug Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Submissions:drakelist@www.zerobeat.net Unsubscribe:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - unsubscribe drakelist in body Hopelessly Lost:[EMAIL PROTECTED] - help in body of message Zerobeat Web Page: http://www.zerobeat.net Brought to you courtesy of TLCHost.net http://www.tlchost.net/ --
