[Elecraft] G - You following this?
Gary: You following this thread? This is the second (NOT counting NN0B's) problem which may be related to KPA100 parasitics. Tom __ Hi Rob, Your problem sound a bit different. What was happening on quite a few earlier KPA100's was the diodes in the switching circuit were providing enough capacitance to cause a tuned circuit with RFC3 and that circuit would break into oscillation and modulate the carrier with a spurious signal. The resulting signal then had nasty sidebands and I used to get accused of Splatter. It used to occur at powers above about 80w. mainly. The fix was to dampen RFC3 with a 1k resistor as well as a resistor change in the high voltage bias supply to make sure the HV supply didn't drop too low on demand. The changes are outlined in the K2/100 Manual ( Appendix G) ERRATA rev. C-3, December 14, 2004. ( steps 1 and 3 ) which is obtainable off the Elecraft Web site. Hope this helps? Re: [Elecraft] KXAT1 with short whip antennas?
Martin, I understand that a whip attached directly to the BNC jacket of the KXAT1 could give mechanical frictions. The BNC is soldered directly onto the KXAT1 pcb without support of the enclosure and that makes it somewhat fragile. Have fun on the bike and 73 from bikeland nr. 1 : Netherlands ;) Dick/PA2DW Hi. I read the manual for the KXAT1 and the advice for antennas states that short whip antennas should only be used in emergencies. Text of the manual included below. This seems strange because when I read the HFPack yahoo group I can find lots of HAMs who are using the KX1/KXAT1 with various HF whips attached to bicycles with varying degrees of success. Any HF whip connected to a bicycle must be a short whip, probably loaded. Anyone have an opinion or personal experience who can shed some light? I'd like to fit the KX1 to my bike! Martin. Manual text: Backpacking Verticals: The KXAT1 may improve the match to a backpacking-style vertical. If the antenna has a loading coil, you should first adjust it for minimum SWR, since such antennas can be very narrow-banded. Set the ATU menu entry to CAL mode (bypass) for this purpose, then back to TUN mode to further match the antenna using the KXAT1 (if necessary). Whip Antennas: Short whip antennas connected directly to the KX1 may damage the antenna jack or PC board, and so should only be used in an emergency. They are also very poor radiators. Re: [Elecraft] KXAT1 with short whip antennas?
Martin, The Maldol 20M whip is fine with a radial 10-16ft and a 1ft or so piece of bus wire clipped to the top with an alligator clip, at any angle. I worked Florida from Toronto on vacation twice with that antenna, acting on Wayne N6KR's lead. But on a bike you may want something better as you havbe the opportunity (and mechanical need) to hold something more substantial, such as a Hamstick or a CB whip. Watch the height regulations though! The ground will be different, especially on the low bands. Budd W3FF operates his Buddipole on a bike with great success and he uses an inductor in series with the ground to the bike frame on 60M. I have heard Budd work the south pole on it SSB! 73, Leigh. The subject title reminds me of something which happened to me yesterday. I went to visit a local new car agency to view vehicle colors actually on the vehicle. I had read the catalog and it was difficult for me to visualize. I told the salesperson the two colors I was interested in seeing. We went to the lot and I saw the first color. He then started to amble around so I asked him to tell me when he found the other color. His response was, Are you buying the book or the car? At that, my trip was immediately finished and I was out the door. Being a ham, appearance does mean something, and we are usually very interested in what is under the hood. [Elecraft] VCO Oscillator Problems and T5
I recently posted a note regarding the fact that I was stuck on the VCO Oscillator Test (p.60) of my K2, #4856. Don, W3FPR gave me some good suggestions, but nothing seemed to fix the fact that I couldn't get the oscillator to oscillate. I replaced Q1 and Q2 and the JFET. Still no oscillation. Being an attorney, not an engineer, I figured I better bring in a specialist, so I turned everything over to Andy, WA3LTJ (MSEE and avid builder) to see if he could get things working. After eliminating all other possibilities, Andy looked carefully at T5, which turned out to be the problem. Page 54 of the manual tells you that windings 1-2 will look *similar* to Fig. 6-15. Page 55 says that windings 3-4 must be wound *exactly* like Fig. 6-16. Being an attorney, I read the manual carefully. I wound 1-2 *similar* to the picture and 3-4 *exactly* like the picture. Note the difference between *similar* and *exactly*. Here is where I went wrong: my T5 windings 1-2 were in the opposite direction as winding 3-4. If the directions of the two sets of windings are not the same, then the T5 connections are out of phase and the Oscillator will not oscillate. After rewinding T5 so that both 1-2 and 3-4 are exactly as pictured in Fig. 6-16, everything is working great. Am I the only one who has had this problem? (Maybe I'm the only lawyer who has tried to build a K2). I think Elecraft should include an errata that says *both* windings of T5 must be look exactly as pictured, or at least make sure the windings start and end in the same directions. Re: [Elecraft] VCO Oscillator Problems and T5
One of my fellow local hams is also building a K2 now. He got his before I ordered mine after we had discussed this for some time. I'm glad he ordered his first, because it was the kick in the butt that I needed to order mine! Anyway, I got off the ground running with assembling mine first, although he wasn't too far behind. When he got to the point where he started winding the torroids (and I was already done with mine) he asked me if it seemed to me like they were all being wound backwards. Well, for any of the inductors that are just inductors it doesn't matter as there isn't any phase relationship to this, just one goesinto and one goesouta lead. I guess he wound his backwards and crossed over the leads to fit into the hole pattern on the board. I did warn him to make sure that if he winds them backwards to do so consistently when winding the transformers for the exact reason that Jonathon found out! Also, even with winding exactly and similarly I still had to tweak the spacing of the windings slightly on T5 (I think it was) to get the upper and lower band edge voltages set correctly during one of the alignment steps. Glad you (and your MSEE friend) got it figured out! Their lawyer sent a suggested addendum to our license containing about 2,000 words listing and defining the owners of the data on which our product could be used under that license. I studied the document at length, and it appeared to express things fairly, but something just didn't sit right. So, I called her on the phone and suggested we strike the four offensive words and run the license agreement without her additions. She said, That's exactly what we want. I just never thought of that! Dan / WG4S / K2 #2456 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Well, it all depends what you get. Without seeing it and/or seeing the specs it is somewhat difficult to make a statement about the amp. If it's auto everything in a tiny lightweight package with 1500W out on SSB and CW I might start drooling even before I get to Dayton. Does it cover 160-10 or 160-6M? Will it keep my coffee hot if I put the cup on the heat sink? [Elecraft] Re: Re Elecraft Net Report for April 24-25, 2005
Howdy Bob, Thank you for trying. I have another op from Scotland who keeps trying but just can't quite make it in. One of these days we may get some relays from the East Coast into the heartland and thence to the West Coast. But you were hearing Tom direct. Fine business. Today, at 1600z, my sked into Oklahoma was very good. After the first 15 minutes or so the band got very stong with only slight QSB. The noise level had dropped from last week so it was easy copy. Thus my CW mentor sped up! But this is his nature. He wants me to break through into a bit faster realm. The Elecraft Net is on 7045 and 14050 kHz each Sunday. We never did try 30 meters but will try 80 meters if my employment situation ever stabilizes. I have loop on the roof which is in need of some rope. If I have to move across the country for a job it makes no sense to put it up just to take it down a few weeks later. But the low take off angle just may help work across the Atlantic Ocean. One day I hope to put K2 #4498 into the log. Kevin. KD5ONS On Mon, 25 Apr 2005 11:18:42 +0200, F5UL [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Kevin ! Re: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out
I don't think the Elecraft amp is targetting the budget end of the market. You can't do that with a solid state amp - tubes are still a decidedly cheaper way to go high power. This amp is really two separate products - a very light, yet high quality expedition amp and a state-of-the-art, full power, fully automated home station amp capable of SO2R1A. (That's running two transceivers with a single, time-shared amp.) I believe it will be competing initially in a field of one in both categories. There are some lightweight amps out htere but they have awful reputations for reliability. And I know of nothing yet that has the bandswitching speed and flexibility to support SO2R with one amp. I don't know what the price will be, but you will have to divide it by two to figure the impact on a contester building an SO2R station. /Rick N6XI On 4/25/05, [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Anything over $1500/US and I'm afraid I will have to count myself out. [Elecraft] requested v. actual power out
On 30-80m, with the power set to 5W, I'm getting 6-7W, even with the KAT2 installed. These are the kinds of readings I saw prior to installing the tuner, and I was hoping the ATU would normalize that. The power out on the higher bands ranges from 5 - 5.5 W or so. On a borrowed K2, for which I built and installed an ATU, the power out was typically within 0.1W of the requested power. Maybe related to this, maybe not, is that during CALn, the lowest value I could ever get was 007. LL/ K3ESE K2 #4442 __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [Elecraft] Just a guess
This is just a guess, Occasionally on this list and others, some of the guys have mentioned a series of power transistors (Motorola comes to mind, but I'm not sure). The web site looks very inviting for those interested in QRO and a short discussion inevitably ensues. Also inevitably, some of the guys who have tried building these things warn about the absolutely terrible customer service problems they've experienced while trying to build one of these amps, and that sort of puts a damper on the whole thread. So, just as a guess, what we have is an interesting possibility for what looks like might be a good an amp, but with lousy customer service. And Elecraft, whose logo you see in the dictionary when you look up Customer Service. So my guess is that the Aptos connection has found something with pretty good potential and will add their word class customer service and have a pretty good amplifier. Re: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out
$2800 (if that's a true figure) is quite inexpensive when you compare the KPA800 (if that's the correct model designator) with the closest competition on the market: the Icom PW-1 and the Yaesu Quadra. Both of those amps are solid state auto-tune and are rated at 1000 watts out on HF and 500 watts out on 6m. Both weigh in excess of 55 lbs including the built-in power supply. The KPA800 weighs 16 kg (35.5 lbs -- not 16 lbs as reported earlier on the list). The street price of a new PW-1 is $4600 and a new Quadra is $4000. The legal limit KPA1500 (if that's the correct model designator) would be in direct competition with the Alpha 87 and the Acom 2000 amps, which are both legal limit tube amps with auto-tune features and prices approaching $7000. To my knowledge, the KPA1500 would be the first legal limit solid state auto-tune HF amplifier to hit the market. IF YOU'RE IN THE MARKET FOR A QUALITY SOLID-STATE (or tube) HF AMP, you'll probably get more for less if you go with Elecraft. If you're not in the market for such an amplifier, don't flame the speculated price. What we have to do now is wait until Eric and/or Wayne gives further details about the amp on this reflector. 73, de Earl, K6SE ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Menu Switch Not Working
Menu Switch Not Working The menu switch is much worse. It is still intermittent, but mostly not working. I checked the circuit connections from the Menu button to U3 pin 6 (/BANK 1) and to U2 pin 6 (D7). All checked fine and I also checked connections at RP1, again fine. The XIT button works, all the other front panel switches seem to work OK, so does the RIT switch. I had an Electrical Engineer friend who is a ham go over this all with me this afternoon and he concurred that all seems as it should be, and at one time the menu switch worked, but all the rest of the time no effect. We connected the two appropriate poles of the switch, still no action on the circuit. Reheated all the pins on U2 and U3 I performed a hard reset by holding down the 4,5, 6 buttons at the same time when the power is turned on and no effect on the menu switch. Is it possible that I have a bad U2 or U3? I do not know what else to check suggestions? I sent this by mistake to Stan (W5EWA) when I meant to send it to the group. Sorry, Stan! -Original Message- I seem to recall when I was a youngun and first getting interested in amateur radio that everybody knew Collins was the Cadillac of rigs. I've never owned or operated one, nor do I have any first-hand knowledge of their quality or how much they cost. I therefore obtained the following cost info off the web. It seems that the Collins 75S-3C receiver cost about $750.00 in 1967. According to an inflation calculator I found, that's the equivalent of about $4200.00 today, and it's only a receiver. Should it then be a big surprise that the IC-7800 with its two independent receivers (and transmitter) costs $10K+? ...ducks as those who think it heretical to even compare the two begin to foam at the mouth De N3WZ - Jim -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:elecraft- [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Stan Rife Sent: Monday, April 25, 2005 7:03 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: RE: [Elecraft] KPA800 @ $2.8k: count me in/out My idea of spendy IS 1500 bucks. 10,500 bucks for a radio is pure H S... [Elecraft] KW Amp Prices
All of the current breed of KW solid state amps use 8 each MRF-150 Mosfets in the output stage. 1000 watts keydown output is the maximum you can squeeze out of those 8 transistors and still have a margin of safety. The least expensive of the lot is the new Tokyo Hypower HL2KFX at around $2600 plus $330 shipping. Its a bare bones KW amp at 54 lbs with its built in switching power supply. If you add a KW autotuner to the combination, the price starts to get up near the $4000 range. Very few in the hobby can afford it. So there is a very limited prospect for sales unless the price could be kept below 3K. Re: [Elecraft] (OT) Baking PC boards in the toaster oven...
I know there was an article on Seattle Robotics Society's web page. I'll see if I can find it. Thanks for waiting. Here is the URL http://www.seattlerobotics.org/encoder/26/oven_art.htm In robotics we need to worry about our power consumption and about weight on board the robot. Much like QRP gear. Surface mount devices are a great way to save on both. They are also cheaper than through hole electronics. Even though my eyes are getting old and far sighted is not a good thing (as well as an astigmatism that is blinding) I find I can work with surface mount devices with out much difficulty. You need fairly steady hands and your normal size tip for soldering your Elecraft bits together. I do use a cake tin to keep from chasing after parts and for static discharge. As long as you stay away from coffee or Coke you're fine. The toaster oven just makes it easier to build one sided surface mount boards. Double sided boards get tricky because the parts keep melting off the down side ;) Hope this helps, Kevin. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net errata
First off I have KL7CC's serial number incorrect: Jim's K2 is 3935. But the most egregious error was not in circling a call sign on my list. W1TF - Ty - GA - K1 - 1423 Just wrote me a note. He was indeed copied on the 20 meter net last night. He was in my notes but I failed to circle the call sign. This is how I assure the calls wind up on my list for the roll call at the end of the net. Thus he missed being listed in my report as well. Now for the great news. With that one extra QNI ECN has had 1500 check ins since day one. I know we have missed a few over that period but we keep trying. Last night we missed two that would have been nice. Geoff from Scotland heard VE3XL (Ric) check in and Bob, F5UL, from France heard Tom but we did not hear either one of these folks. Bands were pretty good last night but the ops who run this crazy net were not on the ball. Well at least one of us was not on the ball! Please keep trying so we can get to the 3000 mark. Closer in time will be the second anniversary on June 6th. That one should be fun. I hope the band conditions are great that day so we can work 30 stations or more. 73, Kevin. I'm experiencing a similar result with just-completed #4793. Power displayed at the bottom end of a 2-needle Armitron power meter seems to agree with expected better than the internal power reading. I've assumed that the problem is accumulated calibration errors between the K2 ADC and the external meter, but...??? Consistent with this is the displayed current which also reads high by about 15% above the high limit. That will cost you more than most amps, and in many cases is impossible because of neighbors, zoning, etc. If your antenna is currently a hamstick, then, yes, spruce it up first! Anything more than a couple hundred watts just creates QRM--it becomes brute force rather than technique! Suppose you have a couple of hundred watts and you are trying to work DX on 160 meters. There will be lots of times that you call a station and he simply doesn't hear you. If you are just below the noise level at his location, a couple of DB may put you just over, and you will be heard. You can work a lot of DX with low power, but that doesn't mean that there's no value in higher power. I can only conclude that the markup must be phenominal! I find this statement offensive. Your personal prejudices are not moral imperatives. There's nothing evil about QRO, and a manufacturer selling QRO equipment is not profiting from sin. Given the short transmitting duty cycle and the relatively small amount of time we spend operating, the additional energy expended by QRO station compared to a 100 watt station is small indeed. The markup is not phenomenal, by the way. If you have ever built high power gear either with tubes or solid-state devices, you know that the cost of the components is much greater. In the US we are permitted by our license to use 1500 watts. We are also required to use the minimum amount of power necessary to maintain communication in any particular case. I suggest that we improve ourselves morally (and legally) by trying to follow this last rule rather than beating up on the manfacturers of amplifiers. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
