[Elecraft] Yaesu MH-31 mike wiring question

2006-05-16 Thread N9KO
I purchased an assembled K2 with a headset mike. I want to use the MH-31 mike
that came with my FT 1000 Mark V mp.

The SSB adapter manual (Page 18) lists this mike. My question is related to
the stated GNDs. Which of the two GNDs listed is related to the PTT and which
to the mike element (2 versus 5,7).

Also, could someone explain the 5,7 GND listing? Does this mean either Pin 5
or Pin 7, or a combination of both 5 AND 7?

Tnx from a new K2 owner

[Elecraft] No audio from speaker on K2

2006-05-16 Thread Kennet4723
Ok---this might be elementary to many but I can't seem to find the problem.
After I built the NB board and plugged it in along with the SSB board and
plugged in the ATU cable and the internal battery cable, I plugged in the
speaker cable, Now there is no audio from the speaker, but there is audio from
the
headphones. I checked the speaker and cable with a ohmmeter and things look
ok. Elecraft suggusted that the headphone jack might be bad, but I had never
used it before this and the audio was ok from the speaker then. Everything
else
is working fine including the NB Has anyone else experienced this problem? I
might add that I did not build this K2 but aquired it total built and working

[Elecraft] KAT2 Lo-P message

2006-05-16 Thread Bob Towers
I've recently installed the KAT2 automatic ATU and when I hit TUNE, I often get
the message Lo-P and the AATU makes no attempt to minimise the SWR.

I don't see the error message in the manual but maybe I'm looking in the wrong

RE: [Elecraft] No audio from speaker on K2

2006-05-16 Thread Darwin, Keith
Gee Ken, I duhno, but here are some troubleshooting ideas.

Rule #1: If it was working but now isn't, look at what changed. I
don't care if what changed has nothing to do with it, start checking
there.

Rule #2: Follow the clues. Gather clues and follow them. Don't jump
to a conclusion about what it is (I've change the part 3 times and the
rig STILL doesn't work) or what it isn't.

Rule #3: Ask Don.

Try taking all those accessories out. Do you still have output? Then
put them in one at a time. This will at least narrow the search.

[Elecraft] K2 AF noise level?

2006-05-16 Thread Darwin, Keith
Hey 'Crafters,

I'm debating between the KAF2 or an outboard audio filter for my K2.
Possible choices are the SCAF-1 and an Autek QF1A.

My goal is to greatly reduce the hiss that is there in the headphones
when the narrow CW filters are engaged. I'd also like to add some CW
selectivity. A notch would be great too.

KAF2 has the benefit of being integrated into the rig but doesn't offer
lots of flexibility. The others are external but give you more control
over the filtering.

How well does the KAF2 kill the hiss? I assume it does great for that.
Does it add any noise back in?

[Elecraft] KAT2 Lo-P message

2006-05-16 Thread Bob Towers
Mark,

Yes, I notice it only when the power is less than about 2 watts. If I turn it
up past 2, all is OK.

I was under the impression that pressing TUNE at any power level, sets it to 3
watts, minimises the SWR and then sets it back to the original power setting.
I've obviously got the message wrong!

I also enjoy the flexibility of an external AF filter, and have used
an Autek QF1 for over 20 years.

However, my K2 has such a quiet AF output compared to my previous

Maybe the QF1A is quieter,

Ken,

While your trouble shooting the audio problem, go ahead and order a couple
of headphone jacks from Elecraft. If the jack is not the problem it won't
hurt to have a spare on hand. I've had to replace the jack twice in one of
my K2's. It didn't make sense to me either, one day it worked, the next day
it didn't. If there is a weak point in the K2/K1 audio hardware, it's the
phone jack.

[Elecraft] KAT2 Lo-P message

2006-05-16 Thread Bob Towers

I think this is a low power message indication that the atu isn't seeing enough
power to do a tune. You might want to check the cable between the atu and the
rf out jack on the motherboard. It can come loose and can also become damaged
with the removal of the lid, etc. Also make sure the ribbon cable is seated
properly. Does it only happen on an antenna, or does it also happen on a dummy
load?

Philip,

I've only recently installed it and the cable from the ATU was locked well into
place. I'll check, anyway. I'll also have a go with a dummy load.

I think the general view is that I'll need to set the power level above 2 watts
before I do the tune - it works OK then.

I'm running it into a rather ancient Kenwood TL-120 linear which on occasion
doesn't present a well-behaved load to the K2, so I get the ATU on the K2 to
cope with it. If I set the power on the K2 much above 1-2 watts, the linear
doesn't seem to like it ie trips out.

Build yourself an attenuator (3 or 4db should be fine), and the K2 will be
happy and the amp will be happy and the KAT2 will match all (well half - the
attenuator to amp side needs to be close to 50 ohms. The K2 side should be
too).

The current record in RufzXP (the successor of the old DOS-Software
RUFZ by DL4MM) is 916 LpM / 183.2 WpM, for single callsigns. Held by
YO8RJV and myself.
The old software was only capable of 735LpM/147WpM and quite a few
persons copied that speed; the new RufzXP version doesn't have a speed
limit, and I am sure very soon the 200 WpM barrier will fall.

Current RufzXP-Highscore-List: http://www.rufzxp.net/toplist.htm

Also PED used to be popular for QRQ training, running 150 QSOs in 10
minutes at 100 WpM is great fun; here is a recording I made:
http://dl0tud.tu-dresden.de/~dj1yfk/1min.wav

Of course this is only true for copying single callsigns. In plain text,
there are numerous persons I know of (and I count myself to them) who can
copy approximately 80 WpM.

Most normal QRQ QSOs on the bands are limited to about 60WpM though,
mostly due to limited transmitting capabilities (unless keyboards are
used)...

Bob,

Yes, the K2 power must be set to 2 watts or above to allow the ATU to tune.
The firmware will reduce the power for tuning if it is set higher, but it
will not increase the power to the best of my knowledge.

You may want to try an attenuator pad between the K2 and the amp if you do
not need the full output of the K2 to drive that linear. An attenuator will
provide a more consistent load to the K2 - I should think a 3dB attenuator
would do fine, perhaps only 1 dB would provide enough smoothing - it is
certainly worth a try.

My guess is about 25 wpm. it says:

The code is very good, but the spacing gets a little sloppy - JUST LIKE AT

which also had no affect on the problem. But there could be some interaction
problem with the mike PTT. The mike cable shield is connected to pin 8 on the
connector, but the front panel chassis mike connector is not grounded. When
this happens again, I'll remove the mike and see if that cures the problem.

Thank and 73.

Bob, is the Mic plugged in when this happens? /DOT-PTT is wired to the Mic
input, and perhaps picks up
RF if the shield ground on J2 Mic isn't working.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 AF noise level?

2006-05-16 Thread w6jd
I just built a SCAF-1 and while it turns my IC-706MKIIG into a new radio it
doesn't offer any improvement on the K2 with the KDSP2. I've also used the KAF2
and I don't think it would be much of an improvement over that either.

[Elecraft] KPA 800 ?

2006-05-16 Thread william parker
Hello,

Ive been reading alot of emails about the upcoming KPA 800. As a builder of
the K2 and the KPA 100, which I enjoy using, I wanted to complete my station
with the KPA 800. I am hearing though, of a retail of 2500 to 3000 dollars.
This is way to steep for me, if this is true. I read that the KPA 800 will
have a built in auto tuner, but, Im just a blue collar ham.
Anyone have anymor info ?

Thanks,
Bill, KA3IXF

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Voltage Problem Initial Check

2006-05-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
Stephen,

Check your power supply voltage - if you are using a wall-wart, many of
those deliver much greater than their indicated voltage.

If you have less than 15 volts at the K2 input, that is likely OK, but
something more like 13.8 volts is preferred.

The higher voltage can also explain the high current draw.

Don W3FPR

As some on this reflector know, I was with the FCC in the San

the early 1970s I was, among many things, the code examiner for both
amateur and commercial applicants. One day an old-timer came in,
related that he had been a coast station operator at the RCA Coast
Station KPH, and wanted to upgrade his Second Class Radiotelegraph
License to First Class before he retired. To copy the 25 WPM plain
text, he brought his own mill as was permitted. He sat down,
asked if he could smoke (in those days it was OK in offices), put
the paper in the mill and said OK, start the tape. The
venerable Boheme paper-tape reader started pounding out at 25 WPM.

He took a cigarette out of his pocket, put it in his mouth, took a
pack of matches from another pocket, lit the cigarette, dropped the
matches on the floor, picked them up, and started typing. He
pounded away and by the time the tape was finished had almost caught
up. He took the paper from the mill, handed it to me, and said
Didn't think I could do it, sonny???

He had perfect copy. I wish that I was that good!

RE: [Elecraft] power amp mounting of Q7 and Q8

2006-05-16 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

Use the 1/2 inch long black screws - the 'silver' screws are for mounting
the feet and are only 7/16 inch long.
They will fit - look to see that the heat sink is almost in contact with the
2D connector - if it is more than the thickness of the thermal pads away
from the 2D connector, then you have something physically wrong. The screws
project about 1.5 mm, but you can get the lockwasher and nut on them. The
screws do not come all the way through the nut, but almost. If necessary,
put the screws into the 2D connector first.

Don W3FPR

weekend probably just went out the window.

A little frustration is good for you...keeps you humble.

RE: [Elecraft] Re: Human CW copy speed

2006-05-16 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I have a commercial CW license but I used it to service shipboard and
aircraft CW equipment (yes, long ago airliners used CW to keep in touch with
the ground, especially when crossing the oceans). I never stood watches as a
regular CW operator - just the occasional shakedown cruise aboard various
ships along the west coast of the USA. But I had a great friend, K6ETY, who
was a maritime radio operator in the merchant marine throughout WWII.
Finally, in the 1970's he came ashore to stay working a regular CW operator
at coastal station KPH north of San Francisco. I often worked that facility
on CW doing radio checks from various ships. I visited Les at KPH one day.
He took me around the operating positions introducing me to his buddies in
what was called the Den of Thieves - the CW communications room in the
basement of the receiving facility at KPH. I'll never forget his speaking to
one of the operators who was sitting there with CW pouring out of the cans
on his head and pounding on a mill (typewriter with all upper-case letters
used for copying radiograms). The guy jumped up and shook my hand and we
spoke for a bit, all the while I could hear the CW still bleating forth
from the cans (commercial operators wore the cans forward of their ears with
the volume up fairly high rather than on their ears so it was quite audible
for a couple of feet around). After we talked for what seemed like quite a
while he said 'cuse me and reached for his bug to send R and then turned
back to me while the CW continued almost without pause.

When we quit chatting he sat back down and wailed at an incredible rate on
that mill, finishing the message we had interrupted, pulled the finished
message from the roller, inserted a new form and caught up to where the
station was now sending. Mind you, this included dates, message numbers,
word counts, addresses, phone numbers and the like in addition to the text,
all of which he was storing in his head while we talked.

It reminded me that a commercial license does not make a true professional
operator. I was and still am a Radio Amateur in awe of what some real
operators can do!

KPH has a web site with many pictures of the CW operations there as they
were from time the station was first launched in the 1920's up through the
heyday of maritime CW in the 1960's and 70's.

See http://www.radiomarine.org/kph-proj.html

And at:
http://www.radiomarine.org/historic-5.html

You'll see my old friend, Les, in the top picture. If you work me today I
may well be using that bug he has on the table (note the weight to slow it
down. Yes, that's a real cable clamp needed to keep it down under 20 wpm -
just like I use). Les became an SK in the 1990's and his widow passed his
key on to me.

Re: [Elecraft] What's Happening at the Elecraft Dayton Booth? New Products, Building Demo, T-Shirts, Amp and More.

2006-05-16 Thread Augie (Gus) Hansen

In addition, we'll be previewing one of our new solid-state auto-tune
 linear amplifiers (KPA1500).

Pictures of the above can be seen at: http://www.elecraft.com/news.htm

Nice to see the amplifier. Looks great!

One little problem. Either the caption on the photo page (and the reference
above) is wrong, or the amp has been mislabeled (it shows KPA800). Is it
reasonable to assume that the two amps look nearly identical?

I hope you sell a lot of them.
