[Elecraft] [K3] UPS as shipping option to the EU (was: K3 Shipping options to UK)

2007-11-14 Thread dj7mgq
Hallo,

My white box (or in my case brown box) from Aptos arrived at 10:26 CET (09:26
UTC) on the 14th of November 2007, and appears to be undamaged. :)

Because the German Postal Service will not accept packages with a high insurance
value, I had to use UPS. The prices Lisa quoted for expedited and express were
almost the same, so I went with express (enough of the waiting thing).

In less than 36 hours after shipping, my K3/100 kit was delivered to me at my
work place in Ismaning, Germany (very close to Munich). I did not have to pay
the driver the "Import Tax" - the 19% ersatz as VAT for imports here in DL. I
assume I will be getting a bill from UPS or customs for this.

For about $200, UPS Express worked well for me. But the extra costs for VAT and
shipping are irksome to say the least.

I think you're missing the point. Many people with limited situations
have to make do with antennas that are not resonant on some bands. In
that situation it is much better to have the tuner close to the
antenna feed point.

Many people in limited situations may also have restrictions such as
only able to get one or two thin cables into the shack. The remote
switching suggested by Alan would allow two antennas to share the same
feeder coming in to the shack.

If a product was available that offered these features with the same
operating convenience you get with an internal ATU then I'd join those
who have already said they'd buy it.

Instead of small I should have said modest, i.e. 100w max from a K3 (I hope)
running barefoot feeding a 100ft doublet at 27 feet squashed into a garden
90ftx 30ft including the house. The proximity of neighbours prevents more than
100 watts. With this system I have already worked most continents on SSB.

The rig has an output impedance of 50ohm into 30ft of 50ohm cable so the
place to fit the ATU and balun is between the 50ohm cable and the open wire
feeder of the doublet. The shack is in an upstairs front bedroom and the
feedpoint is at the back of the house. And this is nonnegotiable.

Hence the need to have the ATU remote from the rig and the antenna
switching in the rig so that a second 50ohm cable can feed a 50ohm yagi direct
not
needing an ATU. OK yes this does introduce the need to weather proof the ATU
but there are several on the market already some suitable even for small boats
in far more extreme conditions.

My wish was for an ATU designed to work specifically with the K3 taking
advantage in the auto tune facilities with a one touch action.

Something that should not be overlooked is acoustic noise generated by an
antenna matching unit (ATU) if it is to be used outside, relays clattering
away at 2am could upset the neighbours! Far better is the 'purr' of a motor
driven capacitor used in an 'old fashioned' link coupled matching unit,
nevertheless I have mine in a soundproofed box.

My wish is that the designers of commercial tuners would allow tuning to be
achieved with milliwatts of RF rather than watts, which is feasible. IMHO
tuning with RF levels above a few milliwatts erp is anti-social in terms of
QRM.

I still haven't open mine yet (it arrived at work a couple of hours ago), so I

It matters not a jot to me. As Toby has said, it doesn't affect kits
anyway. But if W&S can import any MFJ product (which definitely are
not CE certified - I think someone on this reflector confirmed it) and
then "certify" it themselves, I don't see why lack of certification
should be an obstacle to anyone in the UK receiving the K3 they
ordered, even a built one.

... but to be fair, that's only when you press "TUNE" for the first time
on a new antenna, right? After that, most modern ATUs will remember the
settings for different bands, or different parts of bands, and when you
QSY significantly it's usually just one "click" to get back to the

RE: [Elecraft] Good morse key?

2007-11-14 Thread Darwin, Keith
Hey Justin (& the group)

If you're interested in a straight key, I have a couple of
recommendations

http://skccgroup.com - The Straight Key Century Club. A great bunch of
straight key (and bug) users. Great place to be if you are doing slow
manual CW.

www.MorseX.com - Morse Express. Marshall sells a number of keys and is
a great guy to deal with.

You'll need to figure out which sending style you will use. American
doesn't work with all keys, European (for me) works with every key I
try. I send European style.

For practice, I put my K2 in test mode and send away. Sidetone sounds
but the rig won't transmit.

Straight Keys:

- Navy Flameproof 26003A. Get 'em used on e-bay for $30 to $70. Get a
NOS model straight from Bunnel for about $95
http://jhbunnell.com/navykey.shtml.

- German Junker. Get NOS models from Morse Express. Cost about $100.
My absolute top pick for straight keys. Ugly, functions wonderfully. I
drilled & tapped the knob mounting hole and put a navy knob on mine.
Hog heaven.

- Kent. Costs about $150 from AES or HRO (don't recall which). You can
also order directly from Kent http://www.kent-engineers.com/ and get the
kit model. Available with wooden or metal base. Wood base is noisy,
like a wood block.

- J38. Another WWII vintage key. Lots of guys love 'em. Cost on e-bay
seem to be in the $30 to $50 range. I've never used one so I can't say
much.

- Begali. I hear good things, but haven't used one.
http://www.i2rtf.com/

- Vibroplex. I hear mostly mediocre things. Probably a nice $100 key
selling for $175.

- Bencher. Most Bencher straight key owners end up with something else.
Bencher seems to be the one that people don't stick with. Either the
upgrade or they quit using the straight key. Morse Express has a good
price on them.

- LTA. Available from Morse Express. I've owned an LTA Marconi key and
it was quite good. Very pretty key, functions as well as the Flameproof
and nearly as well as the Kent or Junker.

- GHD. Expensive but I hear good things. Not to many using the,
probably due to price.

- Swedish pumper. I hear great things. On my short list of keys to
try.

- Hi Mound. I hear great things about their Swedish model and little
about the others.

- Amplidan. Wonderful, I missed my chance to buy a NOS key for $350.
They're all gone now. Good luck finding one. Good luck finding one
that is affordable. I'll stick with the Junker for $100.

Enough for now. I probably have you and the whole list in information
overload.

I agree, but as an example if I am on 40m at some ridiculous hour I would be
working CW at the low end and SSB between 7140 and 7197 kHz, which I believe
could result in a fair number of "clicks" during the night when using an all

settings for different bands, or different parts of bands, and when you
QSY significantly it's usually just one "click" to get back to the

RE: [Elecraft] Good morse key?

2007-11-14 Thread Darwin, Keith
American style is done with the forearm on the desk and sending is done
by rocking the hand up & down, pivoting at the wrist. Some (myself
included) will use a modified American style where the elbow is on the
desk but the forearm is held above the desk a bit and sending is done by
flexing the hand / wrist and moving the forearm up and down. With
American sending, you usually want a key with a knob close to the desk
and the key is set back from the front edge to make room for your arm.

European sending starts with the key at the front edge of the desk.
Your upper arm hangs at your side, elbow close to your rig cage. The
forearm is parallel to the floor and is unsupported. Sending is done by
moving various parts of your whole arm in a rocking / bouncing fashion.
Keys for this style often have large mushroom knobs which are high off
the desk.

>From a key perspective, European senders can use any key since knob
height doesn't really matter much. American senders are pretty
dependant on having a knob close to the desk and struggle with mushroom
knobs.

It is acceptable for an importer to certify products as long as he does so
within the legal requirments. He can then quite legally fix the appropriate CE

whether W & S follow the requirments. Anyone has the right to view the

[Elecraft] K2 Excessive Internal Noise?

2007-11-14 Thread Howard W. Ashcraft
After solving an Auxbus issue with the KPA100, I noticed the following.
With no antenna, or a good dummy load, if the RF level is full counter
clockwise and the AF full clockwise you get a perfectly acceptable level
of audio hiss. However, as you advance the RF level to 12 O'clock a
"bacon frying" noise starts to be perceptible. At full RF, full AF, it
is quite distinct. I don't seem to recall the "bacon frying" noise
before and it is low enough that band noise will blank it. Also, I
rarely have the AF past 12 O'clock in operation, so it isn't apparent,
but I also think that it shouldn't be there. Years ago I used to work
on audio equipment and this sounds like a noisy resistor, but because it
is coming out of the RF circuitry, it could be a few other things, too.
First question. Would someone do a similar check on their K2 to see if
this is inherent (i.e., am I chasing rainbows). Thanks in advance.
Second, I'm starting to go through the schematics looking for suspects
and will do a little testing when I get back home (on a business trip
right now). If anyone has already experienced and addressed this, I
would appreciate your information to jump start my tracing.

Thanks,

Howard W1WF

But if I'm importing it to use, not to sell, does this matter? The
body responsible for CE marking here is Trading Standards. They are
unlikely to even find out about it since I am not a trader. Toby makes
a valid point as concerns resale, but being pragmatic, we don't live
in a bureaucratic police state where officials go through the small
ads checking on what people are selling, so whether it's legal or not,
it's certainly going to be "under the radar".

I think the only issue that may concern Elecraft is if it is likely
that imports are going to be stopped at customs and returned at their
expense. If it's OK for goods to be certified at this end then it
obviously isn't illegal to import uncertified goods therefore customs
isn't going to be bothered.

I haven't run any analysis, but think that the counterpoise rods

The R5 can be ground-mounted. It will exhibit very acceptable SWR
across all of its 5 bands when mounted close to the ground. However, my
experience has been that elevation increases its effectiveness
proportionate to its height. Going from ground height to 25 feet
improved signals by about an S unit.

[Elecraft] KRC2 and the K3

2007-11-14 Thread Brendan Minish
I have just hooked my KRC2 up to My K3

it's working as a band decoder but it maps 6m and 10m to the same
output. is there any way to remap this ?

Also what features are are currently supported and how will these
evolve? with the k2 it was very useful to be able to use the buttons to
do stuff. Will we be able to map the buttons in the same way with the
K3

My KRC does not work with the config program and the firmware upgrade
only worked once I turned of ACK's. it's a Version 1 MCU is this a known
issue with early units ?

[Elecraft] KCommunicate - new software for K2 and K3

2007-11-14 Thread Julian G4ILO
If you are interested in a CW and data mode program for Windows that
will take advantage of the built in encoding and decoding capabilities
of the K3, there is some information and a screenshot of my new
program KCommunicate at
http://www.zerobeat.net/smf/index.php/topic,87.0.html . In the absence
of my own K3 I have added PSK31 and CW decode support using third
party software so I can use it with my K2. This program is the
diametrically opposite approach to HRD in that all the radio control
is done using the knobs and buttons on the radio. The computer is used
for logging and for sending and receiving data.

The program is not generally available yet although it is working well
enough to make some QSOs. If you are interested to know when it is
available to try out, subscribe to the forum and keep an eye on that
topic. This will probably not happen until after Wayne has added
support in the K3 firmware for getting the decoded text in a
packetised format and for detecting which data mode is in use.

Although my main interest is in making something I can use (on
Windows) and I don't intend making this my life's work as HRD seems to
have become for Simon, the program is being developed using Lazarus, a
cross platform development tool very similar to Delphi. Source code
will eventually be made available under the GPL for Linux or Mac
developers to port it to those platforms, or indeed for Windows
developers to add features or develop whole new versions, if there is
interest in doing so.

Please use the forum if you have any questions or comments about the program.

Mosely back in the late 1950's, with 80 feet of RG-8. Unfortunately it is only
a 4 band 40 - 10 no WARC, BUT it'll tune all 4 bands to under 1.5:1 and no
need for tuners. The dipole is another story.

For performance, absolutely. I think the question was how low can you go
without it starting to detune the antenna.

I haven't run any analysis, but think that the counterpoise rods
should be isolated above the ground a bit. K7LXC and N0AX did
comparison testing of several verticals and presented the results at
the Dayton Hamvention in 2000 (copies of the report are available

One of the models they tested was the R8, which is built in a similar
manner to the R5. I recall they had the base mounted about 7 feet
above a ground screen. The results were (in my opinion) better
overall than for the other types they tested. I have a similar Hy-
Gain AV640 mounted on a pipe at 13 feet and am quite satisfied with
the performance of that installation.

RE: [Elecraft] K2 Excessive Internal Noise?

2007-11-14 Thread Dan Barker
On mine, (K2 #2456, Audio Pot Mod done), the radio is silent with AF Max and
RF Min. Hiss occurs (very steady, not like bacon) beginning about 2:00
O'clock on the RF and is very low level even fully CW.

It's very hard to know what amplitude you are experiencing. My o'scope says
30 mv P-P across an 8 ohm speaker in the Ext Spk. Jack with both knobs fully
CW.

Dan / WG4S

At full RF, full AF, it is quite distinct. I don't seem to recall the
"bacon frying" noise before and it is low enough that band noise will blank
it. Also, I rarely have the AF past 12 O'clock in operation, so it isn't
apparent, but I also think that it shouldn't be there.

hi Barry - Look at the owners manual for the Display page (in my copy here rev
B1 it is on page 12).

On the lower right of the display are 7 digits, which are used to display a multitude of things,
normally the VFO B setting - but also the CW decode and parameter changes.

Just sitting there the K3 does not display the BW, but if you turn the WIDTH knob this lower right
display will show you the setting as it changes. This is also the case for the POWER setting and
many other settings. When you stop turning the knob the display reverts back to VFO B (or CW or DATA
decode if you have that enabled.)

How can you operate it when it's covered?

I figure on getting my run 2 radio maybe by Christmas

at least several days! We aren't going to cover

I don't have a lot of time so I only write what I want to write. And I
have no need to operate the K3 (or K2 for that matter) over a network.
Plus the older programs were written in Delphi which I no longer have.
By using Lazarus I have the option to make Linux versions if I want to
move to that - always assuming I can't persuade a current Linux user

RE: [Elecraft] Good morse key?

2007-11-14 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
I was taught "American style" straight-key sending to lay my arm on the desk
with and keep my wrist relaxed but straight. The whole forearm moves to
operate the key with the bending taking place at the elbow.

In the merchant marine and Army radio schools, moving the wrist was
considered the quickest way to get a "glass arm" that would cripple the
individual and prevent further sending (I suspect the medics would call the
problem it caused "carpal tunnel syndrome" today).

Similarly, a bug (or keyer paddle, I suppose) was operated by rolling the
forearm back and forth, not by pressing with the fingers. The fingers
remained relaxed but fixed in position, the space between them whatever is
comfortable to accommodate the finger pads as the hand and arm rolled back
and forth to operate the dit or dah levers.

Using those techniques, a good operator can send strings of messages for an
hour or more at a time without taking a break or being fatigued. I'd never
try that moving my wrist or fingers!

Ham setups today tend to be different. In commercial CW it was suicide to
have the key contacts spaced closely or the spring tension light. Often we
were sending on a moving, vibrating ship, in a bouncing airplane or some
other unstable surface. The solution was to open up the gap on the key and
tighten the spring. Most keys were left that way. Modern hams seem to like
very close spaced contacts that can be manipulated by a soft touch of the
finger tips. That seems to work very well for them, but it's definitely a
relatively *new* technique.

The good side of the "old" system was that we could send consistently good
CW even if the key was stiff with a heavy spring or if it had had worn
pivots instead of precision bearings, or even if it lacked a single shiny
chrome or polished brass part .

hi Barry - just based on my limited contest operating, the trapezoid seems sufficient to remind me
of where I am with BW and shift. Also, the XFIL display helps because you know what you have
installed in each slot - for example if XFIL4 is 400Hz, I know when XFIL4 is lit that I am less than
or equal to 400, and the trapezoid gives relative BW size from there.

Hope I am making sense, it would be much easier to just show you! - jeff wk6i

This type of operation was discussed when the K3 was originally

I see it is in the FAQ under Transverter Topics along with the
original question, 'can the TX freq be changed while transmitting

I'm still a couple months away from my K3, but this kind of jumped out at me
when I read the K3 manual. Why should I need to remember what roofing
filter I installed in each slot? Besides, the filters might be swapped from

[Elecraft] Re: K3 selectivity display?

2007-11-14 Thread wayne burdick

Craig,

There are five discrete icons on the LCD (FL1-FL5) to remind you which
filter is selected at any given time. Generally you don't need to
remember what each one is, because they're selected automatically as
you rotate the WIDTH control. The numeric value of the width (etc.) is
also shown as the control is rotated.

If you'd like to get a quick reminder of what the actual crystal filter
bandwidth is, you could assign a tap or hold programmable switch
function to the crystal filter bandwidth menu entry (FLx BW).

This change allows the operator to immediately hear the effect of any

If you assign a programmable switch function to the filter bandwidth

I should have done it this way in the first place!

When you tap XFIL to rotate through the filters the discrete FLn indicator
lights up for that filter and also the VFO B display says "FL3 0.40", "FL4
0.25", etc. So you don't really have to remember.

Also my tendency is to use the WIDTH control to just dial it down and not
really think about what the absolute width is. If I can make out the signal
better, I'm happy. But either way (XFIL or WIDTH) the width is displayed.
You don't have to remember what's in what slot.

Also, you only have to take off half the bottom cover to change or move a
filter. It's the easy half IMHO.

FYI: I've been playing with both the 200 Hz 5-pole and 250 Hz 8-pole filters
and so far in my purely subjective tests I can't tell the difference between
them. What I think this means is that if you're not a numbers purist you can
get by with the cheaper 5-pole filter and probably never know the
difference. If performance means everything to you then by all means spend
more for the 250 Hz 8-pole filter and you'll be happy, too.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 selectivity display?

2007-11-14 Thread Jeff Stai

hi Craig - three things:

1. The manual advises you to order the filters from widest in XFIL 1 and go narrower from there. I
think this is good advise, to keep it easy to remember where they are. You can order them any way
you want, this is just a recommendation.

2. I don't think you will move filters very often. It is a lot of screws to remove since both the
bottom and top covers have to come off. I think 95% of the time you are just adding a new one into
an empty slot.

3. I understood that additional filters are planned, including variable filters, which would further
complicate the display if not using the XFIL notation.

hope this helps! - jeff wk6i

[Elecraft] RE: [QRP-L] Can a R5 vertical be ground mounted??

2007-11-14 Thread Mark Saunders, KJ7BS
You bet an R5 can be ground mounted. However, Cushcraft has recommended it
be 4 to 6 feet above ground. You do, however, need to consider the RF
exposure limits as outlined by the FCC.

Remember, you have to consider whether the site is controlled (not
accessible by the average person) or uncontrolled (accessible by the average
person). Accessible means can they get near the radiating portion of the
antenna.

I have a Cushcraft R-7000 vertical mounted 8 feet above ground in an area of
my lot that is fenced and locked (controlled area).

[Elecraft] Need some help on a K1 problem.

2007-11-14 Thread Len [K4IWL]
I'm hoping that there are still some K1 aficionados out there.

I ordered my K1 with the 4-band-filter board. I was not able to get the
4-band-filter to work so I ordered the 2-band-filter (since it's a simpler
board) so I could determine if it's a problem with the K1 main board or the
filter board. To make a long story short, the K1 with the 2-band-filter
works perfectly (40/20M) and the relay switching works. I then finished the
KAT and it works with the 2BFB just fine.

But here's the problem, I am still debugging the 4-band-filter inbetween
using the K1 with the 2BFB. When I plug in the 4BFB there is no relay
activity at all when I switch bands. The relays stay in the reset position.
I have run out of ideas. Here is what I've done:
Replaced the 4MHz resonator. Replaced the IOC with a spare that I have. So
far nothing works. I have visually inspected every solder joint. I have
reflowed the solder on all the IOC and resonator pads. I have checked
continuity between the IOC pins and the relays and they are all solid. I
have checked the common connection to all the relays for shorts and opens. I
have checked continuity through RFC1. There are no shorts that I have
detected or seen on the board (solder splashes, globs, etc.) although I'm
not ruling that out yet. Nothing I've done fixes it.

Any new ideas out there? Anybody else have this same or similar problem? The
relay switching has nothing to do with the RF paths, these appear OK when I
manually apply 1.5V to selected relays for the band configuration. RF is
getting through as it should on each of the 4 bands. Oh .. yeh ... I am not
getting any error codes on the display either. And when I switch the bands
with the front panel switch, the display changes but no relays activate.
