I have been getting excellent ssb results recently using a Computer mic.
Just plug it in the rear mic socket and select rear connector, Hi with
Bias, if drive level is too high try rP.L bIAS instead of rP.H bIAS
pretty much ANY computer mic will do. The one I use currently I bought on
Ebay for a pound.

Mics for the ham radio market are in the main all about marketing, if it
works ok on Skype it'll work ok on the K3
Enjoy your K3, Mine prompted the sale of the Icom 7800

to fix the situation yourself. It‘s dangerous. Leave it to a highly

[Elecraft] K3 sn 709 Data questions

2008-04-30 Thread VE3NFK

Hi

Slowly working my way through the modes - K3 with Navigator and K3 cable.
Various data pgrms that work fine with TS-2000.
I read the manual and data mode DATA A is supposed a good for all - I hear
the tones
but no transmission - the TX light comes on.
mode 31 PSK works -= tones, TX light, and TX. none of the other modes put
out a signal.
What am I missing please?

tnx

[Elecraft] K3/10 mojo - discovered the source.

2008-04-30 Thread Darwin, Keith
A couple of nights ago, I was calling CQ on CW. No takers. Then, I
heard my call rising out of the band noise. "N1AS DE UU1AZ K".
Whoa, hold the phone, get outta here! A DX station called ME. I'm only
running 10 watts to a vertical and he answered MY CQ?

Must be the Mojo.

Well, turns out it was more than that. He is an SKCC guy and was
actively searching for new numbers from other SKCC members like me. His
antenna is, and I quote, "full size 4 element yagi, 42 meters up".
That's high. Oh yea, we were on 40 meters. Imagine the size of that
antenna system.

He sent me an MP3 recording of part of our QSO. It was an absolute hoot
to hear my signal from a few thousand miles away. It didn't sound so
good though and his side tone sounded nasty. I asked what rig he was
using. "FT1000MP". Oh, that explains a bit :-)

So it appears that part of the secret of the Mojo is to work a person
with an antenna the size of Rhode Island, high enough that 747s have to
fly around it.

It was sure a lot of fun!

Oms, I feel bad about not answering your request since I've extensively used
a pair of K3s in RTTY contesting. However, I've never seen or used MixW, so
I have no experience in what the specific setup steps might be. The first
question is whether MixW runs AFSK or FSK transmission and what your desire
is. Then, other questions follow.

I know of at least one other K3 user on this list who uses MixW, so
hopefully he will speak up.

[Elecraft] K3 SSB TX issues

2008-04-30 Thread Chris Meagher
Hello there from VK2,

K3#685 is going, however I could do with advice on certain matters.

The set is basic 10W with no options and 5 pole 2.7KHz only, in filter slot 3.
Receive is excellent, or should I say, outstanding.
All controls and menus seem to function correctly.
DC supply is big set of batteries. Around 12 -13V.

Questions:

1. What mike settings should be used with mikes MH2, MD2 and pro-set (I have
all 3).
Presume they should all have bias on, but does L/H refer to mike impedance or
hi/low mic gain?
Asking because in an on-air test, listeners reported severe audio distortion.

2. What does the monitor level setting actually do? It does not seem to vary
the audio level much?
Distortion was also heard while self monitoring.

3. I have HL-200BDx amp, any problem with connecting key out to ACC2 amp input
with RCA cable?
eg could an earth loop or a short be created?

4. After trying various configs/menu settings, distortion on monitor seems to
have gone, though audio sounds a bit electronic.
Any experiences of intermittent problems like this, or any advice on set-up &
testing?

Thanks,

Chris VK2LCD

I used to use MixW when I used Windows, but balked at the request for a
"step-by-step" setup. As far as I can see, setting up MixW with the K3
should be no harder than with any other radio. You just need the serial
cable for CAT, which you already have for firmware uploads, and a pair of
audio cables between line in and headphone out and the corresponding sockets
on the back of the K3. Despite the suggestion in another thread that a 10:1
attenuator is needed for the TX audio drive from the PC, I haven't needed
one.

The K3 should be placed in DATA A mode. In other words, AFSK will be used.
MixW does not support the K3 (unless this has been added in the latest
version) so you would have to select K2 (NB this appears under Kenwood!.)
There may be an issue with the frequency display, as I seem to recall the K2
is not consistent with the Kenwood radios (which MixW's Elecraft support is
based on) in the sidebands it uses in data mode, and I don't know if the K3
is consistent with the K2 either, but if you notice a problem try telling
the software the K3 is a TS-2000.

Don't know about UU1AZ, but in Ukraine (and the rest of the former Soviet
Union) most people live in crumbling tower blocks. He may well have had his
beam mounted on top of the block of flats he lived in.

I recently returned from holiday in Nerja, on the south coast of Spain. In
that small town I saw no less than three large HF beams mounted on top of
blocks of flats. Hard to imagine that being allowed here in the UK, where
even erecting a small vertical in the back garden of your freehold owned
property produces a knock on the door from a neighbour complaining that it
spoils his view and lowers the value of his property.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone

2008-04-30 Thread David Ferrington, M0XDF
I believe the theory behind not including a mic is as you stated
Keith, that it's either going to be a CW rig or it's going to be users
with the owners favourite mic. In my case, I purchased the Heil K3
Proset - something I'd wanted to try anyway. I already have a Heil
HM10-Dual, but I'm not using it on the K3.
I did buy the fist mic for use in JOTA and such, but I haven't even
tried it yet.

I can see that it might be a little frustrating if you didn't realise
the standard K3 doesn't include a mic.

100 feet is something else. MOJO is nice, but money helps hi hi.

My $10K ICOM 7800 also came without a microphone. I think mobile rigs would
be expected to come with a microphone, but not necessarily a desktop rig.

We have a lot of choices for microphones and if the K3 (or IC-7800) came
with a little dinky microphone I'd never have used it, and would have had to
store it for when I might eventually sell the rig.

Don't most people who are going to use SSB end up with a better mic

Windy, as I recall, the gap between the headphone jack washer and front
panel was about 0.017". If you just want to close the gap and get rid of
the rattle, you might try what I did: a trim washer from a spare 1/4" jack
was 0.018" and added just the right amount of spacer to eliminate the rattle
and fit the front panel w/o any discernible flex +/-.

I don't know, Keith. I'd think that most people already have a key of
some kind even it they're not CW ops, because most of us wish we were.
Besides, none of us would be happy with whatever they gave us. I
have J-38 and Speed-X keys and an Autronic paddle, and I haven't been
on CW in over forty years, except to honk some CW down a twisted pair
with a tone oscillator and clip leads. K zero PP was on the other end
and thankfully was able to copy it, as I knew he would. Gosh, that
was thirty some years ago. I thought that getting a nice CW radio
like the K3 would make me get on, but not quite yet. I've polished my
key contacts, but I'm still looking for some polish for my CPU. It
seems that the code is still in there at least.

again just last night on CW. In fact, I checked into the Elecraft SSB net on
Monday night and the control operator couldn't believe I was only running ten
watts. There were one or two others running ten watts also. I think there is
more to the mojo than the other guy having a big antenna with a huge amount of
gain. I only run a vertical or a magnetic loop and I'm still able to work DX.
Maybe not as much as the guy with a zillion watts and a high gain antenna
farm. Again, it's the mojo which is a great equalizer. :-)

running 10 watts to a vertical and he answered MY CQ?

Gary,

It would be nice if it were mojo. I try not to tell anyone I am running 10
watts unless they ask.

I listen to the QRO operators on 75 in the evening and some seem to think
that the difference between 100 watts and 500 watts is huge. It's just a
little over 6 db, which is around or slightly above 1 S unit depending on
the receiver. Going up to 1kw is only another 3 db which is less than
another S unit. All that electricity and cost to operate, when a little
antenna improvement and good band conditions mean so much more.

(All that said, I will still buy a KPA800 when they get them produced, just
to satisfy those who think running that level of power is everything to
getting out> ! :-) With mojo I wouldn't need 100W which I will be running
once I finish up the second K2 and get my K#.)

I'm into cycling as well as amateur radio. Most new high-end bikes come
with a cheap pair of platform pedals. They are typically used only for
the test ride around the bike shop parking lot. The owner takes them
off as soon as he gets home and installs his favorite brand of clipless
pedals. I've often wondered why the manufacturers don't save the $10
and sell the bike without pedals.

I removed the left side panel to see what's up. So there is a very small gap

Lacking a hex nut, I placed cloth over the round nut and tightened it
carefully with pliers. It's fine for now.

Why not simply supply a hex nut and flat washer? It would make it safe, easy

- New illustrations of wiring and installation are available.

This documentation may be found on my site, at:

squeeze it shut with my fingers and re-tighten the nut, but when
plugging in phones, it would again loosen immediately. I placed cloth

VFO A SHAFT was off-90° RESOLVED!

I was sure I had tightened the front panel nut, perhaps too much,
using a box-end wrench. I removed the knob and plastic and found to my
surprise that it was NOT tight. Something shifted? I don't know. I
gave the nut some gentle torque with the wrench and it came out almost
perfectly straight, and definitely good enough.

All's well in the shack.

RE: [Elecraft] RTTY ON K3 - PY5EG

2008-04-30 Thread Ed Muns
> What kind of setup you have used for the RTTY contesting?

I only use FSK TX, not AFSK, and decode in parallel with a DXP38 and MMTTY
(sometimes multiple windows with different decoding profiles). For SO2R
control I use the Top Ten DX Doubler. No USB anywhere, all standard Serial
ports. With the K3 I no longer use an external audio DSP box like the
NIR-12, nor do I use any additional audio isolation transformers since they
are built into the K3. Currently I use WriteLog for RTTY contest logging
and will eventually migrate to Win-Test when enough of the SO2R features I
use are implemented (for both CW and RTTY modes). I use TR-Log for CW (and
SSB) contesting so the USB SO2R/keyer interfaces aren't useable (MicroHam,
EZ-Master, etc.). Once I migrate from TR-Log to Win-Test, I may upgrade to
one of these nifty USB interface boxes. (Before someone asks, no I don't
consider TR4W an acceptable substitute for TR-Log.)

For PSK31 I use Digi-Pan which works great with the K3, just two standard
audio cables between the K3 and PC soundcard.

I use 400 MHz Pentium II towers at home and 1 GHz notebooks when away. Just
standard run-of-the-mill sound cards built into these computers.

Windy, as I recall, the gap between the headphone jack washer and front
panel was about 0.017". If you just want to close the gap and get rid of
the rattle, you might try what I did: a trim washer from a spare 1/4" jack
was 0.018" and added just the right amount of spacer to eliminate the
rattle

and fit the front panel w/o any discernible flex +/-.

[Elecraft] K3 Proset Question

2008-04-30 Thread John Reiser
I have a question for those who have used the Elecraft/Heil Proset with their
K3.

The description on the Elecraft web site says: "Includes plug adaptor wired for
Elecraft K2 pin out." I imagine that means it comes with an extension cable
that accepts the 1/4'" and 1/8" audio plugs shown in the picture and has an
8-pin Foster and 1/8" stereo audio plug at the other end. Is that correct?

How do you like it with the K3? Are there any issues?

Many thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] XV50 question

2008-04-30 Thread DW Holtman
Hello,

I finally finished my XV50, got it debugged and working. Now there is one more
problem/question.

I setting up the configuration, I set the low power out of the K60XV to 1.0 MW.
When I have everything connected, and operating, the display shows that the K2
is only putting our about 0.3 MW instead of 1.0 MW. Is this adjustable? It will
only allow about 8 or 9 watts out of the XV50 instead of 20 Watts, with
everything properly aligned.

Thank you for your help.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Headphone jack/front panel gap

2008-04-30 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hi Windy:

I'm working on the assembly procedures, monitoring e-mails and talking with
Gary and the techs in Aptos who are working on returned gear and building
K3s to see where I need to provide more or better information in the
manuals. I'm in Oregon and cannot see for myself the returned gear or the
assembly of the new rigs.

What I've related about tightening the nuts is what the techs in Aptos said
they have done successfully on the units they've built or fixed. They are
the ones who told me that a common mistake builders make is to leave off the
split lock washers that go between the standoff and the front panel board.
Apparently a number of builders have put them under the screw heads where
one would normally put lock washers, not realizing they are used as spacers
to make the standoffs a bit longer, not lock washers. Note I'm speaking
about the standoffs between the front panel board and the front panel sheet
metal, not the standoffs between the front panel and DSP boards (the correct
spacing there becomes critical if you install the KRX3 subreceiver when they
become available).

If the spacer-washers are missing, that should not cause the VFO A encoder
shaft to be canted but it will cause the PHONES jack washer to rattle. That
apparently is **not** the only reason the PHONES jack washer is loose on
some K3s, but it is **one** reason for it happening. That's a dangerous
situation because the screws holding the LCD cover can then hit the LCD
front glass itself, breaking it.

Given that those standoffs between the front panel board and the front panel
sheet metal are installed correctly, Aptos has found tightening the PHONES
jack knurled nut a bit more (squeezing the boards and front panel sheet
metal between thumb and fingers while turning the knurled nut) has always
cured the problem. Since I mentioned that, several builders wrote me
personally to report that worked for them too.

If that doesn't work for you, post a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Gary
will pick it up there and pursue the fix for you and we'll find out what is
happening to cause the problem for others.

The canted VFO A shaft has, again according to Aptos, always yielded to
adequate tightening of the nut on the encoder. Again, if that doesn't do it,
please send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Oh the three front panel
assemblies I've worked with, tightening the VFO A encoder using nominal
pressure with a wrench produced a well-aligned encoder shaft. So what's
"nominal" pressure? That's the problem. I have a socket wrench and used it
without a handle, just giving it a very firm twist holding the socket in my
hand. Perhaps more torque is needed for others.

As Gary, the techs in Aptos (and occasionally myself) come up with a better
understanding of the problem, we share the information and suggested fixes
with Wayne, as the Elecraft Chief of Technology and other sundry activities,
for final approval or course of action.

So be sure you've informed [EMAIL PROTECTED] and include any "fixes"
you've used or tried.

When I first saw this thread, I assumed it was about wearing out the

I'd therefore say, don't worry about the backlight, except on power

The Day mode will shut off the LED backlights on the LCD, but unfortunately
it also ups the level of brightness for the LEDs on the controls. That would

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Microphone

2008-04-30 Thread Russ

Gary;

I too have just been using a cheap "computer" mic with good results that I
bought for $2. Just follow the directions as described by Brendan and you
should be good to go. However, if you want PTT , you will have to use an
external switch.

Garry

I have been getting excellent ssb results recently using a Computer mic.
Just plug it in the rear mic socket and select rear connector, Hi with
Bias, if drive level is too high try rP.L bIAS instead of rP.H bIAS
pretty much ANY computer mic will do. The one I use currently I bought on
Ebay for a pound.

Mics for the ham radio market are in the main all about marketing, if it
works ok on Skype it'll work ok on the K3
Enjoy your K3, Mine prompted the sale of the Icom 7800

[Elecraft] K2 problems

2008-04-30 Thread Scott McDowell
Hello
I have been having some problems with my K2 which were the
lo battery message coming on every eight minutes, the volt
meter not working, and the vfo linearization not working on
test point 1.
The transmit and receive worked really good.. The low battery
message was bugging me so I put in a new microprocessor.
That cured the low battery message, volt meter not working,
and the linearization on test point 1.
The new microprocessor is the same as the old one
since the rig is only two months old. Now nothing works!
The receiver is totally dead, and the transmitter output
is zero.
I can't go through the set up procedure again because
I keep getting the info 232 message, regardless of how
I go to 40 meters.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

[Elecraft] Squelch

2008-04-30 Thread KJ3D
Hello Group,

I recently installed HSE software and ran into an interesting problem. The
folks at Callsign Software couldn't provide a solution, so here I am.

After the installation, when the K2 was powered up, it would do so with no
audio - but otherwise apparently working fine. A touch on the key or PTT
switch brought it back to life, but only for 10 seconds).

Somehow, the HSE program turned squelch full on on my K2 (ser 4991 with SSB
and DSP).

I cannot find a reference to squelch anywhere in the Elecraft literature,
including how to turn it off.

I did get it off, but it required installing HRD and installing all the
sliders. One is for squelch and it was full on. Turning it off and exiting
the program solved the problem.

My question is...

What's the story on squelch? Is there one? How does one access it -
specifically how do you turn it off if it gets turned on by a third party?

TIA,

Re: [Elecraft] Squelch

2008-04-30 Thread Joe Planisky

Hi Tom,

Yes, the K2 has a Squelch feature. It's accessed through the
secondary menu (tap MENU, then tap DISPLAY). Squelch (SLCH) is the
first item on the secondary menu. See page 100 in the K2 manual.

[Elecraft] K3 wish list - option to toggle between two power levels

2008-04-30 Thread Benny Aumala

Running plenty of QRP and QRPP but also 100W,
I would like to toggle between two adjustable power levels.
PF1 or 2 could do that?
The TUNE was changed and this option might be as easy.
Wish to see this "on the list".

My K3 is a dream to work with. Congrats to Elecraft team!

[Elecraft] K3 Mic

2008-04-30 Thread Gary Gregory
aaah..but I wanted to go portable (as in the outback) for a week to 10 days
and I did not plan on ordering a desk mic right now.

Speaking of which, has anyone had any problems getting Heil to respond to an
e-mail request regading a mic and ordering?

I see they have gone it alone with their distribution and I am assuming that
is the reason for the lack of response.

I have managed to get the Kenwood TS-450 Mic to work with the K3, so, now I
have to go back to the book and see what other treats are inside.

So far my feeling with the K3 receiver is that it is very very good. I have
yet to have a serious play, but the signs are good that it is indeed all
that I hoped it would be.

Oh, CW...yeah well, I have to go back and start all over again, I have
completely lost it.and NO, I am not senileyet..but workin on that
too.

thanks to all for the advice on mics, I do appreciate themall.

regards,
Gary

Re: [Elecraft] re: K3 [Elecraft Proset Question

2008-04-30 Thread David Yarnes

Fred and All,

I believe the adapter supplied with the Elecraft Pro Set is a true Kenwood
adapter. On the K2 you wired the radio for whatever microphone you wanted.
If you wanted to use a Kenwood microphone setup you wired the K2
accordingly. That would put bias on pin 5. The Elecraft Pro Set, which is
an electret with the "IC" cartridge, was deemed to be fully "Kenwood
compatible, and so they just supplied a Kenwood adapter with the Pro Set,
and that worked fine on a K2 wired for Kenwood. Along comes the K3, with
bias preset on pin 6, and they are still sending out the Kenwood adapter. I
think that's why it doesn't work for you. I have the Elecraft Pro Set also,
and I just use the jacks on the back of the K3--no adapter used.
