Re: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)

2008-05-03 Thread Bob Cunnings
Does the advice for setting up soundcard digital modes given here:

http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg53656.html

become effective when using this new version? Specifically:

"If you try and trick the system and run with *zero* ALC bars in
PSK31, the ALC has to work hard to give you your requested power - or
maybe it will think there is insufficient signal to work with - and
your Tx S/N may suffer. So, *please* set it to 4 bars in soundcard
"digital" modes."

This sounds right given the description of the ALC changes.

Great stuff Wayne, thanks!
One point and a question. Firstly, the RPT OFS menu entry is not in the
config menu, it is in the main one :-)

Secondly, what is the deviation set to in FM mode? For example, I would
dearly love to use the rig on 2m for our local repeater via my XV-144
but in the UK, that means narrow deviation. Could that be made
adjustable if needed?

Many thanks

Ian

As usual, if you have any difficulty with the firmware upgrade, send

* * *

MCU 1.87 / DSP 1.69, 5-3-08

This release includes improvements in all areas. Changes are
categorized below.

  NEW FEATURES:

  * CW KEYING IN SSB MODES: While in SSB modes, you can now send CW
without
changing modes or using an offset. The other station will hear the
signal at your CW pitch.
This is especially useful on VHF bands when SSB signals can’t be
copied.
To enable this feature, go into CONFIG:CW WGHT and tap ‘1’ until
you see SSB +CW.

  * FM MODE ADDED: Requires FM filter installed in slot FL1. Those not
needing
FM mode can set CONFIG:FM MODE to OFF. To set up a repeater
offset: Use the
CONFIG:RPT OFS menu entry, then hold ALT to select -/+/simplex
(-/+ appear under
the FM mode icon). To set up tone encode: hold PITCH, then rotate
VFO B to select
PL TONE or PL OFF, and rotate VFO A to select the desired CTCSS
tone. (When
PL TONE is on, a letter ‘T’ will appear near the FM mode icon.)
Repeater offsets and

PL tones are stored per-band/per-memory.

  * VARIABLE AMP KEYING DELAY: Added CONFIG:TX DLY menu entry, which
sets the time from KEY OUT jack (active low) to first RF in 1-ms
steps, from 8 to 20 ms.
To minimize loss of QSK speed, use the shortest delay that works
with your amp.

Most will work with the default (minimum) setting of 8 ms.

  * LINE OUT ALLOWS RX/TX AUDIO RECORDING: Normally, CONFIG:LIN OUT
sets a
fixed-level, receive-only output for main/sub (L/R), compatible
with digital modes. Tapping
'1' switches LIN OUT to =PHONES, where the line outputs match
headphone audio,
audio level controlled by AF/SUB gain controls, and both RX and TX
audio available.

  * SIMULTANEOUS USE OF MIC AND LINE IN: If the MAIN:MIC+LIN menu
entry is set to
ON, and MIC SEL = FP or RP, the present mic OR line in can be used
for transmit audio.
NOTE: Setting MIC SEL to LINE overrides the MIC+LIN menu entry
(its parameter
becomes "N-A"). When MIC+LIN is in effect, rotating the MIC
control shows MIC GAIN.

The op has to set MIC SEL to LINE temporarily to set LINE IN gain.

  * S-METER ABSOLUTE MODE: Use the CONFIG:SMTR MD menu entry. Set to ABS
(absolute) to have S-meter stay constant with preamp/atten
settings. Default is NOR (where
PRE/ATTN affect the S-meter). ABS mode requires recalibration
(SMTR OF & SMTR SC).

  RECEIVE:

  * SSB RECEIVE PASSBAND EXTENDED AT LOW END (now 100 Hz; was 200 Hz).

  * AM RECEIVE WIDTH RANGE INCREASED: The WIDTH control in AM mode
now has
a range of 2.8 to 10.0 kHz. Wider settings provide outstanding
fidelity for hi-fi speech
and other wide-band signals. This is the *IF* filter bandwidth --
the traditional way to show
bandwidth for AM, because the required IF bandwidth is twice the
modulation bandwidth.
NORM selects an IF bandwidth of 6.0 kHz in this mode. WIDTH
settings above 6.0 kHz
will not be useful unless you have an FM-bandwidth crystal filter
installed (at FL1).

  * IF A 2.8 KHZ FILTER IS INSTALLED, SSB "NORM" BW is 2.8 kHz (was
fixed at 2.7 kHz).

  * AUTO-SPOT (SPOT with CWT ON) now works with both very weak and
very strong signals.

  * PSK AUTOTUNE ACCURACY improved. You may still need to use RIT
(FINE steps) to
tune in signals for best built-in text decode. (Also see
CW-to-DATA in the Owner’s Manual.)

  TRANSMIT:

  * TRANSVERTER POWER CONTROL: The value set in CONFIG:XVn PWR now
correctly
sets a fixed power level on the associated transverter band
(0-1.50 mW or 0-12W).

  * POWER ROLLBACK BASED ON REFLECTED POWER: Power rollback begins at
about
2.5:1 at 100 W (and of cour

I should not imaging becon transmitting would be a problem ..

rational .. wspr beacons may become very common given the growth curve

it could conceivably provide real time all band propogation
information .. somewhat similar to ale ..

[Elecraft] K2/100 and Paclink Setup

2008-05-03 Thread Phil Kane
I am attempting to set up my K2/100 to send Pactor messages with the
Paclink program via a Pactor-capable TNC. In using my other digital
data program, MixW, for BPSK31, I set a COM port to communicate with the
K2/100's I/O port and the program controls the PTT line in the K2 very
nicely.

I have attempted to do this with the Pactor program with no success.
The K2 does not go into Transmit mode when set for PTT, and it pulses
almost uncontrollably when set for VOX.

Has anyone succeeded in interfacing these two, or is a different Pactor
program indicated?

With thanks for constructive advice.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 FIRMWARE UPDATE: MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 (Finally!)

2008-05-03 Thread Craig
The SSB transmit chain has had a major rework. The
results are very impressive.

1. The ALC is vastly improved. In fact you could say
that the K3's ALC is perfect because it does not
contribute any measurable levels of IMD to the SSB
signal.

2. The increase in IMD levels when you turn on the
speech processor is non existent.

3. Excessive IMD levels under heavy dynamic voice
testing is almost non existent.

4. IMD levels as measured at 5, 10, 15 and 20khz are
very impressive under dynamic voice conditions. If we
use the measured data as per SM5BSZ's results, you
could conclude that the K3 has one of the best levels
of IMD suppression under dynamic voice testing
conditions.

5. Under all levels of voice conditions, mic gain and
speech processing settings it is just about impossible
to make the K3 splatter.

I did not do any 2 tone IMD measurements because i
don't have much faith in 2 tone numbers as a reliable
indicator of IMD performance under voice conditions.

6. In short, the K3's SSB transmitter performance is
close to being PERFECT..

Equipment used: Bird Attenuators, Tektronix 2467B,
Crystal Notch, Agilent 8594E, AOR7030+, SDR-IQ and a
Anritsu ML422C level meter. All tests were done on 14
mhz SSB.

[Elecraft] K3--Keying suddenly stopped

2008-05-03 Thread Robert Tellefsen
I was working the 7th District QSO Party, and doing fairly well
at 5w on both cw and ssb. Then, just after I logged my 103rd QSO,
the keying stopped.

Neither the paddles nor the computer coming through the key jack
will cause a signal to go out in cw mode. Keying the paddles does
give cw sidetone and the red TX light over the headset jack lights in
time to the keying. I've cycled through the TEST mode several times,
but to no effect.

Holding the XMIT/TUNE button does cause a carrier at normal power.
Using
either VOX or PTT on ssb generates a normal signal

Either something has suddenly quit on me, or I've accidentally bumped
some adjustment that now inhibits keying. No smell of leaking magic
smoke, so I expect it is some adjustment that isn't obvious or
documented.
I've dug through the manual and both the MAIN and CONFIG menus, but
nothing obvious. There is a TX INH menu selection, but it is in OFF
status,
as it was before the keying quit.

I've tried cycling the power, but no change there. I'm stumped.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas or suggestions where I
might look for something that is inhibiting cw TX?

Thanks and 73

[Elecraft] Re: Perfect K3 Speaker

2008-05-03 Thread wayne burdick

Hi Bruce,

For communications bandwidths, a sturdy 4-ohm, 3 or 4" diameter mobile
speaker (non-powered) does a great job. For a bit more fidelity and to
take advantage of the K3's stereo speaker outputs, I use a pair of good
quality bookshelf-style speakers (again, non-powered).

Right now I'm using Best Buy's "Insignia, 4-inch, 3-way surround
speakers," which sound quite good, although they're 8 ohms rather than
4 so the available per-channel peak power will be lower. They're about
4"W x 8"H.

I had been using just a single speaker, but having two allows me to get
L/R separation of the main and subreceivers, as well as take advantage
of the K3's "AFX" simulated stereo mode.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2008-05-03 Thread Kevin Rock
Good Evening,
It was a wonderful day today in a string of them. I am getting wood cut,
split, and stacked. In a few days I will cease being so stiff and just bask in
the pleasant glow of my labors. I'll also have a nice stack of wood for next
winter. I think I can safely say spring is here. It has only snowed a little
this week! The flowers are going crazy and I saw my first hummingbird of the
season. I know where one feeder is but Pat put the other somewhere I have not
found yet. Pat?
Just took a break from 7QP to write this announcement. Forty is getting
fluttery for the locals but the AZ and GA folks are coming in nicely. I'll
drop to 80 m soon to see how that is working. Not a real contesting effort
just a little practice. Karl taught me not to use the headphones and to keep
moving. I have not called CQ yet just searching and pouncing. There are
plenty of stations out there though. I know there are a few other contests but
I have only worked the 7QP folks so far. Did not get back in the house in time
to test 20 meters but it was weak this week for my cross country skeds. One of
these days the sunspot cycle will start upward again. Currently it in is the
longest low in quite a few cycles.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware Update for Mac OSX won't talk to K3 --?

2008-05-03 Thread David Fleming
Hi Windy,

It sounds like you're trying to communicate with a
modem or a bluetooth device. The KUSB will appear as
"usbserial" in the Port menu. Be sure you are
selecting "usbserial" as your port.

The Filter Configuration is still under development
and not yet functional in the Mac and Linux versions.

[Elecraft] K3 Firmware Update for Mac OSX won't talk to K3 --?

2008-05-03 Thread KM5Q

System: Mac OSX 10.5.2.
I have the KUSB adapter cable.
I downloaded AND installed the appropriate Prolific driver for my OS,
as instructed (PL2303 driver). Installation looked normal. I
restarted, etc.

I have K3 Utility v. 1.1.4.1
K3 is turned on, connected to USB port.
Port -- after Refresh Port List, I hit Test Communications. It says
"MCU boot loader is ready for MCU firmware load RS232 39400 bps."

Firmware --
I GOT the download of new files from Elecraft OK -- Utility shows MCU
Available: 01.87, etc.

I hit Send All New Firmware to K3

This is as far as I can get:
20:50:09 New firmware is available for your K3
20:51:29 K3 boot loader is waiting for MCU firmware load.
20:51:44 K3 boot loader is waiting for MCU firmware load.

This is the same message I was getting BEFORE I installed the Prolific
driver.

I don't think computer is talking to K3:
Crystal Filter Configuration shows all zeros

K3 Config still shows 1.78
I turned K3 off, then back on. No help. Am I supposed to do something
at K3 other than turn it on?

Frustrated!

We've just completed the most extensive K3 firmware
update ever. The
full list of changes is provided below.

*** NOTE *** You must use the latest version of our
firmware loader
(K3 Utility rev 1.1.4.1) or else you won't be able to
load all
components of the upgrade. It's available on our K3
software page,
along with release notes:

 http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

As usual, if you have any difficulty with the firmware
upgrade, send
email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Both Lyle, KK7P (DSP
firmware) and
myself (MCU firmware) will be closely monitoring your
results in case
further tweaking is required.

I'd also like to thank all of our K3 customers for
their patience. This
firmware release was delayed several times due to testing,
engineering
staff vacations, etc. Our field testers have been pounding
on interim
releases for weeks (thanks, guys). I hope you'll find
it worth the
wait!

Wayne, N6KR

* * *

MCU 1.87 / DSP 1.69, 5-3-08

This release includes improvements in all areas. Changes
are
categorized below.

   NEW FEATURES:

   * CW KEYING IN SSB MODES: While in SSB modes, you can
now send CW
without

changing modes or using an offset. The other station
will hear the
signal at your CW pitch.

This is especially useful on VHF bands when SSB
signals can’t be
copied.

To enable this feature, go into CONFIG:CW WGHT and tap
‘1’ until
you see SSB +CW.

   * FM MODE ADDED: Requires FM filter installed in slot
FL1. Those not
needing

FM mode can set CONFIG:FM MODE to OFF. To set up a
repeater offset:
Use the

CONFIG:RPT OFS menu entry, then hold ALT to select
-/+/simplex (-/+
appear under

the FM mode icon). To set up tone encode: hold PITCH,
then rotate
VFO B to select

PL TONE or PL OFF, and rotate VFO A to select the
desired CTCSS
tone. (When

PL TONE is on, a letter ‘T’ will appear near the
FM mode icon.)
Repeater offsets and

 PL tones are stored per-band/per-memory.

   * VARIABLE AMP KEYING DELAY: Added CONFIG:TX DLY menu
entry, which
sets the time from KEY OUT jack (active low) to first
RF in 1-ms
steps, from 8 to 20 ms.

To minimize loss of QSK speed, use the shortest delay
that works
with your amp.

Most will work with the default (minimum) setting of 8
ms.

   * LINE OUT ALLOWS RX/TX AUDIO RECORDING: Normally,
CONFIG:LIN OUT
sets a

 fixed-level, receive-only output for main/sub (L/R),
compatible
with digital modes. Tapping

'1' switches LIN OUT to =PHONES, where the
line outputs match
headphone audio,

audio level controlled by AF/SUB gain controls, and
both RX and TX
audio available.

   * SIMULTANEOUS USE OF MIC AND LINE IN: If the
MAIN:MIC+LIN menu
entry is set to

ON, and MIC SEL = FP or RP, the present mic OR line in
can be used
for transmit audio.

NOTE: Setting MIC SEL to LINE overrides the MIC+LIN
menu entry (its
parameter

becomes "N-A"). When MIC+LIN is in effect,
rotating the MIC
control shows MIC GAIN.

The op has to set MIC SEL to LINE temporarily to set
LINE IN gain.

   * S-METER ABSOLUTE MODE: Use the CONFIG:SMTR MD menu
entry. Set to ABS
(absolute) to have S-meter stay constant with
preamp/atten
settings. Default is NOR (where

PRE/ATTN affect the S-meter). ABS mode requires
recalibration (SMTR
OF & SMTR SC).

   RECEIVE:

   * SSB RECEIVE PASSBAND EXTENDED AT LOW END (now 100 Hz;
was 200 Hz).

   * AM RECEIVE WIDTH RANGE INCREASED: The WIDTH control
in AM mode now
has

a range of 2.8 to 10.0 kHz. Wider settings provide
outstanding
fidelity for hi-fi speech

and other wide-band signals. This is the *IF* filter
bandwidth --
the traditional way to show

bandwidth for AM, because the required IF bandwidth is
twice the
modulation bandwidth.

NORM selects an IF bandwidth of 6.0 kHz in this mode.
WIDTH
settings above 6.0 kHz

will not be useful unless you have an FM-bandwidth
crystal filter
installed (at FL1).

   * IF A 2.8 KHZ FILTER IS INSTALLED, SSB "NORM"
BW is 2.8 kHz (was
fixed at 2.7 kHz).

   * AUTO-SPOT (SPOT with CWT ON) now works with both very
weak and very
strong signals.

   * PSK AUTOTUNE ACCURACY improved. You may still need to
use RIT (FINE
steps) to

tune in signals for best built-in text decode. (Also
see CW-to-DATA
in the Owner’s Manual.)

   TRANSMIT:

   * TRANSVERTER POWER CONTROL: The value set in CONFIG:XVn
PWR now
correctly

sets a fixed power level on the associated transverter
band (0-1.50
mW or 0-12W).

   * POWER ROLLBACK BASED ON REFLECTED POWER: Power
rollback begins at

Bruce,

The K3 offers 'stereo' with the subreceiver, and the AFX effects when
selected (without the subreceiver too). So I think the best external
speakers are moderate to good quality computer stereo speakers. I
bought a pair for about $25 at Staples and they serve me adequately.

For mono only external speakers, the Motorola communications speakers
are a good choice.

Re: [Elecraft] from John K3JK

2008-05-03 Thread Don Wilhelm

John,

I seriously doubt that plugging a mono plug in the K2 key jack would
cause any damage - although the K2 would do strange things while the
mono plug was inserted.

To check it out, plug a bare (no wires attached) stereo plug into the
key jack. If you then get a constant carrier, look for a problem with
the K2, but if the K2 behaves normally (no keying), look for a problem
between your external keyer and the K2 - I would start by checking the
wiring for your new stereo plug.

* * *

Set to
ABS (absolute) to have S-meter stay constant with preamp/atten
settings. Default is NOR (where
PRE/ATTN affect the S-meter). ABS mode requires recalibration
(SMTR OF & SMTR SC).

  RECEIVE:

  * SSB RECEIVE PASSBAND EXTENDED AT LOW END (now 100 Hz; was 200 Hz).

  * AM RECEIVE WIDTH RANGE INCREASED: The WIDTH control in AM mode
now has
a range of 2.8 to 10.0 kHz. Wider settings provide outstanding
fidelity for hi-fi speech
and other wide-band signals. This is the *IF* filter bandwidth --
the traditional way to show
bandwidth for AM, because the required IF bandwidth is twice the
modulation bandwidth.
NORM selects an IF bandwidth of 6.0 kHz in this mode. WIDTH
settings above 6.0 kHz
will not be useful unless you have an FM-bandwidth crystal filter
installed (at FL1).

  * IF A 2.8 KHZ FILTER IS INSTALLED, SSB "NORM" BW is 2.8 kHz (was
fixed at 2.7 kHz).

  * AUTO-SPOT (SPOT with CWT ON) now works with both very weak and
very strong signals.

  * PSK AUTOTUNE ACCURACY improved. You may still need to use RIT
(FINE steps) to
tune in signals for best built-in text decode. (Also see
CW-to-DATA in the Owner’s Manual.)

  TRANSMIT:

  * TRANSVERTER POWER CONTROL: The value set in CONFIG:XVn PWR now
correctly
sets a fixed power level on the associated transverter band
(0-1.50 mW or 0-12W).

  * POWER ROLLBACK BASED ON REFLECTED POWER: Power rollback begins at
about
2.5:1 at 100 W (and of course much higher SWRs are tolerated at
lower power settings).
Recovers to original target power level after mismatch is
corrected.
  * CW QSK further refined, with smoother mute/unmute in the presence
of QRN and QRM.

  * SSB TRANSMIT BANDPASS EXTENDED A

John K3JK here, Would someone give me some feedback on my K2? I plugged a
mono plug into my keyer jack when I was using an external keyer. I might have
shorted a resistor or diode. now as soon as i plug the keyer in with a stereo
plug, i get a constant carrier. When I had the mono plug in the keyer jack, i
keyed the rig once. Could I have blown shorted something in the keying circuit?

Yes, use TUNE - set the power level to somewhere between 1.5 and 2 watts
and adjust for peak output. Be certain to follow the band order
indicated. The bands are arranged in pairs, and the inductors for that
pair must be adjusted before the capacitors.

[Elecraft] K2 data port integration rev. 2.0

2008-05-03 Thread J-F VA2SS

Hi,

I updated my data port schematic integration. I made several changes.

Here a few

* power external device from K2 12VDC AUX instead of own power source to
avoid ground loops
* remove audio transfo... not needed anymore... save space and less wires
* add the ALC mod on the SSB board... a must for all, espacially for digital
mode !!!

Schematic can be found at :

Any question... don't hesitate !! :-)

Pactor-2. The power output on 40m and 20m was way off between the two bands
using the digital mode. BUT, with this mod, it solved all my problems !!!

First of all, I think this mod should apply to all of you doing or not
digital mode with their K2.

AND.. I really hope I will meet Don Wilhem face to face one time in my

your contributions to this discussion group »

The conditions you describe are almost identical to the behavior
experienced when the KI6WX SSB Increased RF Gain mod is added to the
KSB2 board, *and* the KPA100 is also in-line. The result of that
combination is that there is more overall RF gain than the KSB2 ALC
circuits can handle. Your K2/100 may have a bit more available RF gain
on 40 meters than the average K2.

The fix for the above is to change the KSB2 board ALC. 1) Cut the trace
on the top of the board between P1 pin 6 and the base of Q1. 2) Install
a 1k resistor over the previous cut (between P1 pin 6 and the base of
Q1). 3) Change the value of R9 to 1.5k. These changes were first
suggested by Gary Surrency of Elecraft support.

You gentlemen may wish to try this even if you do not have the KI6WX mod
installed. I do not believe it will cause any other difficulties.

It is a mystery to me why the situation is not present with the display
in ALC mode, but then I am not familiar with all the internal workings
of the KSB2 firmware. My guess is that the slight additional load
provided when monitoring the ALC level is sufficient to control the
overdrive.

Don W3FPR

I do sense that there are still some guys out there who are scratching their

deal. It has to do with the way CW is used in conjunction with SSB on the VHF
bands. While there are nominal CW-only sub-bands on 6 and 2 meters, CW is
frequently used on the SSB frequencies when signals become too weak for voice
modulation to support communication. You just start sending CW on the fly, and
the other guy will hear it more or less centered in his SSB receive passband.
No retuning. When you stop sending (or in between code elements, if you are
running QSK) you are still receiving in SSB mode -- so whether he comes back
to you on SSB or CW, you will hear him either way. You want to transmit again
in SSB, just grab the mike and talk.

This feature was my favorite thing about the FT-897, which otherwise was a
rather forgettable entry-level rig in terms of its close-in strong signal
performance. Once again, the K3 is evolving into a stellar radio for both the
HF and VHF/UHF worlds, where high-end performance requirements are really very
different.

Earlier I wrote:

I currently am assembling my new K3 #820 and have reached the step where I
need to mount the VFO A tuning knob. I am unable to advance the knob's set
screw far enough to clamp the knob to the shaft and am considering running a
tap in and out of the hole to clean up the thread.

Does anyone know the diameter and thread pitch of this set screw? If I hold the
screw against an 8-32 tap, it seems to fit, but I am worried that it might be a
metric thread instead.
---
I now can report that I took the bull by the horns and used my 8-32 tap to
clean up the set-screw threads in the VFO A knob. The 8-32 set screw then
went in smoothly, and the VFO A knob now is mounted on the VFO A shaft
encoder.

I ran intro a different problem with the VFO knob. The knob would not fit on
the
shaft, and I also could not insert a 1/4" drill bit shank into the knob. I then
used
a 1/4" drill bit to gently ream out the knob, and it now is mounted on the VFO
B
shaft encoder.

Thanks to Thomas, Vic, and Windy who were kind enough to respond to my
request for help.

John,

If the threads of your tap mesh the screw, then the screw is NOT metric.
Metric size is noticeably different. If your tap's diameter also matches,
I'd go for it.

There is an identical set screw in the VFO B knob. Either set screw will thread
easily into the VFO B knob, but either set screw will go just so far and then bind
in the VFO A knob.

Just get a long screw that you know to be 8-32 and run it into the hole
in the knob. If it goes easily (at least up to where the thread ends)
then it is probably 8-32.

transmit.

I would assume that Elecraft can do this, and if they do, the offset will
be whatever you set it for. Your CW sidetone is fully adjustable, and that
would be the process. My FT-897 (I assume the FT-857 has it too) has this
feature, and it is pretty handy at times. Via the menu you can set this
feature to be active (menu #22), and you can even choose whether the offset
is up, down, or automatically selected for you (menu #23). But the amount
of the offset is based on whatever you have set previously for CW operation,
which is what you would want. You can be talking on SSB, then just hit the
paddle to send in CW. I don't think it involves more than just the VFO you

Re: [Elecraft] K2: Hi Cur problem solved

2008-05-03 Thread Don Wilhelm

Daniel,

It is not common to find a bad capacitor, but indeed it does happen.
In situations where something like that is expected, I usually do a
sweep of the LPF to reveal the approximate filter cutoff frequency. A
bad component in the LPF will show up readily using that technique (but
you still have to figure out which component, usually by trial and error).

It is possible to sweep the K2 LPF with an antenna analyzer connected to
the BNC jack, but you must isolate the input of the LPF and connect a 51
ohm resistor (easy to do if the K160RX is installed, but requires
removing the W1 jumper if it is not.

But the problem was cured when the capacitors were replaced with new

[Elecraft] OT: K3 in a Pelican Case

2008-05-03 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
For anyone interested, I wanted to take my K3 #338 with me on vacation in
northwest Alabama after Dayton this year. I wound up purchasing a new
Pelican case #1610 to house it for carrying it around for portable
operation. I'll admit the case is pretty expensive for something used
occasionally, but I've had nice success in the past with these cases, so for
me, it was worth it.

Here is a link to my website with pics:

[Elecraft] K2: Hi Cur problem solved

2008-05-03 Thread Daniel Schlieper

Hi,

my K2 (#4271) had a HI CUR problem. While all other bands were fine, I got
a HI CUR error message on 80m, and output was down to 5 W.

I checked and rewound the coils of the low pass filter (L16, L17) and
touched up the solder joints of the capacitors C190, C191, C192. No
joy.

But the problem was cured when the capacitors were replaced with
new ones. How frequent is is to come across broken capacitors?

[Elecraft] OT: FS: Tektronix 7854 Oscilloscope System (mainframe, plug-ins, manuals, cart)

2008-05-03 Thread Howard Ashcraft
I am trying to regain shop space and will be selling my very nice Tek 7854
Mainframe Oscilloscope with a complete set of plug-ins. The mainframe was
calibrated a couple of years ago by a lab in Silicon Valley and the 7B92A, 7A26
and 7A24 plug-ins were calibrated within a few years, too. Although they are
not "current", this is not one of the cases where the last calibration was 20
years ago Before I advertise on eBay, I thought I would post it here in
case someone is interested in this type of unit. I am actually quite
conflicted about selling this, because it is a wonderful scope, but since I
have 3 1/2 scopes already...

If you aren't acquainted with the 7854, it is a 400 Mhz Bandwidth analog
mainframe with digital storage and wave processing capabilities and is probably
the Queen of the 7000 family of lab scopes. It is programmable from an attached
keyboard and can perform a wide variety of waveform measurements (frequency,
period, energy, etc.) and analysis on the digitally stored signal. This
mainframe has the 2D extended memory option. It is in very nice physical and
electrical condition. The display is sharp (better than my 2465b) with no
burn-in. I have original Tek users and service manuals for this unit and for
the 7A26 plug-ins.

The plug ins that I am including are:

(2) 7A26 2 channel, 200 Mhz, 1Mohm impedance
(2) 7A24 2 channel, 400 Mhz, 50 ohm impedance
(1) 7A29 1 channel, 1 Ghz, 50 ohm impedance with Option 4
(1) 7A19 1 channel, 600 Mhz, 50 ohm impedance with Option 4
(1) 7A13 150 Mhz Differential Comparator
(2) 7B92A 500Mhz Dual Delaying Time Base
(1) 7B87 Timebase with preacquisition (this is the only 7000 series, and one
of the few analog scopes that can look at events BEFORE the trigger.

(Note, the bandwidth of the oscilloscope system is limited by the 7854
bandwidth, i.e., 400Mhz, although some of the plugins are rated higher.

7854 Service Manual Original in excellent condition
7854 User ManualOriginal in fair condition
7A26 Instruction Manual (Has schematics and service information) Original in
excellent condition
7A24 Instruction Manual(Has schematics and service information) Original in
excellent condition
7B92A Manual, .pdf copy

Model 3 Scope cart in good condition.

This is only for pick-up in Alameda, CA as I do not want to ship this scope.

I spent a lot of time and effort accumulating and vetting the bits and pieces
and do not want to sell it except as a complete unit. Price for everything,
$850. If you need probes, I have a pair of virtually unused 250 Mhz Tek probes
P6109a in original plastic cases with standard accessories for $45 a piece.

[Elecraft] K3 VFO A tuning knob set screw

2008-05-03 Thread John H Gibson
I currently am assembling my new K3 #820 and have reached the step where I
need to mount the VFO A tuning knob. I am unable to advance the knob's set
screw far enough to clamp the knob to the shaft and am considering running a
tap
in and out of the hole to clean up the thread.

Does anyone know the diameter and thread pitch of this set screw? If I hold the
screw against an 8-32 tap, it seems to fit, but I am worried that it might be a
metric thread instead.

So it's a non-volatile *analog* memory! That's what wasn't clear in the

Finally a memory that can store Morse from a hand fist. Maybe in a future

Now all we need to do is to figure out how to put that in breakfast cereal

[Elecraft] from John K3JK

2008-05-03 Thread John Klokis
Hello fellow hams, I want to post this to the group to take advantage of the K2.
I have for sale a K2/100, KAT/100:
Ø VFOs with multiple memories

Ø Slpit TX/RX operation, RIT/XIT. Full break in CW, memory keyer,

Ø Narrow IF crystal filtering, excellent RX dynamic range and IF derived
AGC

Ø Covers 160 to 10 meter ham bands

Ø Serial number 3898 , DSP module(KDSP2), 160 module (K160RX), 60 meter
module(K60XV) as well as the KAT100-1 antenna tuner, updates with 2.04P
firmware and has the latest K@ keying modification.

Ø Also included QRP top cover w/speaker

Ø Documentation and test cables are included radio is fully functional and
in alignment

Ø KAT100-1 antenna tuner supports 2 antenna inputs. KAT100 can easily
handles 150 watts, and the 10 LEDS monitor SWR during transmit.

Ø K160RX module adds 160 mtrs TX/RX and a antenna input useable for all
bands.

Ø KSB2 ads SSB and data modes to the K2 transceiver. It can be used with
any dynamic or condenser microphone. I have two mikes(regular and desk mike)
desk mike needs resistor across terminals to operate.

Ø KSB2 has been modified with K16WX reduction intermodulation/distortion
and increased Gain : modification is well documented.

Ø KDSP2 provides up to four user-configurable filters in each
mode(CW/SSB/data)

Ø CW filter settings include center frequency and bandwidth, with "hard"
and "soft" filter algorithms and bandwidths as narrow as 50 HZ

Ø SSB filters provide programmable low and high cutoff frequencies.

Ø Four levels of noise reduction are available in cw and ssb

Ø SSB mode includes automatic notch filter.

Ø KIO2 aux I/O module for computer control

John Klokis K3JK will discuss price thru email. Lets keep the focus on the
rig. thanks, John K3JK

[Elecraft] K2 Mic Gain parameter SSB vs Digital mode

2008-05-03 Thread J-F VA2SS

Hi,

Is there a way to modify the K2 that have 2 different parameters for mic
gain when using SSB or digital mode (RTTY ON) !?!!?

I know that we are able to set different parameter for compression if used
in SSB or RTTY mode... but for mic gain it is not possible. It would be
more useful to have different mic gain setting than compression !?!?!? We
never use compression in digital mode anyway !?!?!? I'm wrong ?!?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] KDSP2 center frequency increment value

2008-05-03 Thread J-F VA2SS

Is it possible to have the KDSP2 filters, by example for CW mode, to have the
center frequency increment by 25 Hz or less instead of 50 Hz. I see possible
optimization on my spectrum analyzer if I could have at least 25 Hz
increment. OK it would be around 1 dBV or less, but a lower increment
value could be more precise when aligning everything. And when using a 100
Hz DSP filter width... 50 Hz increment is too high. The DSP filters are very
effective compared to the crystal filters when used on narrow width like 100
Hz

Approximate shipping date - Approximately April 23-24, 2008

Serial numbers 660 through 782. (As early as S/N 654 may demonstrate
this problem, but we think the problem starts with S/N 660.)

I put the front panel on last night. Should have read email first.
The front panel was a bit annoying to get on, but not as bad as the NB

Oh well, still had to install the KPA3 anyway.

The front panel ground patch has fixed all of the problems associated

several others have complained about the same problems, although I
haven't heard if the patch worked for them.
The symptoms on my K3 were exactly the same as on yours when I used
the Elecraft Proset. Additional problems surfaced when using the
Elecraft MH2 hand mike. All of these abnormalities vanished when I
grounded (with one small wire) the two capacitors that have the
missing ground trace on the front panel board. These are bypass
capacitors by the way, not blocking. An official field repair notice
is expected soon from Elecraft.

[Elecraft] Re: 80 M (and more) on KX-1

2008-05-03 Thread Albers
When I travel with my KX-1 I have an antenna that works quite well on all 4
bands.

I bought a 50 ft roll of speaker wire (a.k.a. zip cord) from Radio Shack - it
turned out to be 51 1/2 ft long, but I don't think the length is very critical.
I un-zipped all but about a foot of the wire, and I use one leg as a
counterpoise, lying on the ground or sometimes hanging out a hotel room window
and then draped along the ground. The other leg, I get as high in the air as I
can. Depending on where I am, sometimes it's a sloper going up to a tree,
sometimes it's a reverse sloper going from a 3rd floor hotel room window to a
bush in the parking lot, sometimes it's sort of an inverted L, etc. Most
recently in a campground in Chaco Canyon, NM it was an inverted U going over a
big boulder near my tent. The KX-1 ATU loads it to an indicated 1.3:1 SWR or
better on all 4 bands, and I've made lots of contacts with it.

RE: [Elecraft] Firmware uploads

2008-05-03 Thread Dick Dievendorff
I tried to address this with the K3 Utility Help text for the Firmware page:

DSP2

The sub receiver's Digital Signal Processor, present only if the KRX3 Second
Receiver Option is installed and enabled through the K3 CONFIG menu.

Installed in K3

Indicates the firmware versions installed in the K3 for each of these
processors. N/A indicates that the hardware option is not installed or has
not been enabled through the K3 CONFIG menu.

In this case, the KRX3 second receiver option has not been enabled in your
K3. The related firmware file is "available" in that it's in the firmware
folder on your PC. But your K3 has no second receiver to receive the file.

The "Send all new firmware to K3" button is disabled because MCU and DSP1
have the "available" version already installed, and there are no processors
in the K3 that have back-level firmware (comparing what's installed versus
what's available in the PC's firmware folder).

When your KRX3 is installed and enabled (via a CONFIG menu option), the K3
Utility will load the corresponding DSP file. I have the DSP board part of
the KRX3 installed in my K3 for testing (I don't have the rest of the 2nd
receiver) and the K3 Utility is able to load that DSP2. The firmware
authors that have the rest of the 2nd receiver have loaded their DSP2 many,
many times.

Hello all,

After having completed the assembly process of the K3, it was time to check
for updates with the utility software.

All seems to work, but.

I saw an update op DSP2 (1.55). In my K3 the status was N/A. An update I
would say. But the button send to K3 wasn't available.

Was this on purpose?

Thanks, Evert PA2KW

PS:

Downloaded the newest utility program and Prolific driver for Elecraft KUSB.

A blob of Coax Seal at the end of a shaft (dowel, screwdriver, pen
casing, etc.) will also do the job.

Re: [Elecraft] 80M on KX1

2008-05-03 Thread Paul Huff

Hi Tom,

I assume that you are talking about an easily deployable field antenna. For
convenience it's hard to beat a simple length of wire with a few radials on
the ground. I don't have 80-meters on my KX1 but I use a 42-ft wire for 40,
30, and 20. Of course that length won't help you, but here's the idea...
Sometimes, because of the specific setup situation (angle of the antenna, a
dog-leg in the wire, nearby structures, etc.) I am not able to get a good
match with the ATU on all of the bands. So I used some hookup wire to wind
a coil on a plastic film canister and made taps about every-other turn. If
the ATU can't find a good match by itself I add in my coil between the rig
and the antenna wire. It doesn't take very long to find a tap that keeps
the rig happy. Something similar with a longer piece of wire might work for
you.

Good luck and 73,
Paul - N8XMS

Can anyone tell me what length of end-fed line works best on 80M using a
KX1
with ATU? I'm having a heck of a time trying to find a length that will
work

with 80M and 40, 30 and 20. I know the ATU is not really designed to tune
80M effectively. It would be nice to have one antenna to do all bands, but
if not a separate wire for 80M is okay too.

Heh, heh getting a little itchy? Me too. I ordered at the end of
Dec. Anyway, here is the only December order I've seen reported here.
It was posted on May 1st:

I would certain find the feature an advantage when I use my K2 with my

the next K2 MCU upgrade?

2008-05-03 Thread Blachura

Hi Gary,
I just used my KX1 on a mini trip. Used a endfedz dipole for 80/40/20.
Worked great with the kx1. Used a small coax from the rig and ran the dipole
up into a low tree using my shoe as a weight to get it up there HI HI. (got
the shoe back ). the dipole is about 80ft long. and I had a very low swr
with the rig.
You can check it out on web.

My comment about the K2 referred to the use of the mode switch (on the

still see it beneficial to implement with the mode switch, even if it

Unfortunately, K2 firmware changes are much more costly, although it

[Elecraft] KAT3

2008-05-03 Thread Gary Gregory
I have been carefully reading the instructions on the configuration and use
of the KAT3 and I am a little puzzled by what I have found.

I was surprised to find that the KAT3 does not track the VFO on receive. I
wonder if there is a reason for this?

Has there been any thought on perhaps an upgrade of the KAT3 in the future?

I have mono band antennas but the band edges are sometimes a little higher
than say the band centre and CW portions. Tracking on receive is something I
have become used to with previous radios.

Still learning how this radio works, all reports so far have been
exceptionally good. i just had a QSO with a station who asked me if I would
like to swap it for his SteppIR beam and an FT1000...been there, done that,
the K3 stays.

Cheers all,
Gary

The expression "end fed line" makes me confused as to what you are
actually talking about. The other replies have ignored the "end fed"
and read the "line" as "transmission line" (transmission lines in
amateur radio are generally always end fed (although that's not true of
Ethernet and Thinwire Ethernet).

I wondered if the "line" was the wrong term here and that you actually
meant antenna wire, in which case, if the transmitter is directly
connected to ground (no appreciable length of ground wire, the answer is
going to be an electrical quarter wave, which is of the order of 20.5
metres or slightly less.
