Re: [Elecraft] Plasma TV Noise

2010-11-24 Thread Ralph Parker
>There's a reason that they (Plasma TV's) have been banned in the EU zone...
I didn't know that. I wish they'd ban them in Canada.
I had a neighbour 2 years ago who bought a plasma TV - drove me crazy on
160 through 30 meters. They moved away a year later :-)

But wait, there's more - a new one appeared on the other side of me about 2
months ago - same old QRM problem.
I'll dig out my ANC-4, string up a noise antenna and cross my fingers.

>... a transmission at high power on or about 14.3MHz does wonders...
I tried high power on 160m in the first instance (on the freq. where I had
the loudest QRM), but it didn't seem to make any difference. I'll give it
another go on 14.3 and report my success (if any).
Any further hints gratefully received.

I only have an old CRT TV that I haven't turned on in 12 years. Radio rules!

2010-11-24 Thread Jeff Cochrane - VK4BOF
My pet hate!
My 3 next door neighbours each have at least 2 of the damned plasma TV's.
There is not alot you can do except to complain to the FCC / ACMA / whatever
your liocencing body is called about the interference.
There's a reason that they (Plasma TV's) have been banned in the EU zone, now
you know what is was.
I do have it on good authority that a transmission at high power on or about
14.3MHz does wonders for the Plasma's power supplies though.
maybe that me be an option.

Re: [Elecraft] Plasma TV Noise any ideas on how to filter it out.

2010-11-24 Thread Eugene Balinski
All,

An active noise cancellor such as the JPS ANC-4 may
really help. You have to stop or minimize the noise before
it gets in to the radio.

Place the ANC-4 sense antenna as close to the offending TV
as possible and then adjust the controls for best noise
reduction.

Re: [Elecraft] Plasma TV Noise any ideas on how to filter it out.

2010-11-24 Thread James Sarte (K2QI)
Tis true they are RFI generators, but plasma black levels are still much
better than LCD, LCOS, or DLP sets. Only thing that's better in that area
are tube televisions.

As a movie buff, I can't stand black crush, so I live with my Panasonic
plasma. When I do QRV, the fix is simple; I turn the TV off. That takes
care of most of my television-related noise. I can't however do much about
the RFI given off by my neighbor's plasma sets, so I still have to find an
effective way of nulling out that interference.

[Elecraft] [K3] Line out, speakers, and L-mix-R settings...

2010-11-24 Thread James Sarte (K2QI)
Curious thing I noticed today; plugged in my headphones only to continue
hearing monoraul audio coming out of my PC's speakers. It took me a second
to realize that audio from the K3 was being piped out of the LINE OUT jack
in the rear, into my PC's input, and out to the two speakers I have sitting
on my desk.

At first I thought it was strange that the audio I was hearing was only
coming out of the left speaker rather than both. I checked the manual and
after a few minutes of reading realized that under normal situations,
activating the SUB would provide the right channel. I then started playing
around a bit more, and figured I'd post this question to the group just to
make sure I understand how these functions work properly.

My experimentation led me to the SPKRS settings which was currently set at
1.  With the SUB off, I changed the speaker setting to 2 but no change;
audio was still being heard on the left speaker and not the right. Am I
then correct in my assumption that the speakers setting has no bearing on
the actual number of channels being output from the LINE OUT jack?

This brings me to my second question - is there a way to get both L and R
channel audio output to the LINE OUT jack just from the main receiver
without the SUB being activated?

My last question, does the SPEAKERS setting only affect the SPKR OUT jack on
the rear panel? According to the manual, leaving it at 1 will only provide
one channel of audio. Would setting it to 2 provide both L&R channels to
the speakers regardless of SUB activation?

Mni tnx es happy thanksgiving.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 LoCut/HiCut

2010-11-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Gary,

The HiCut and LoCut are quite useful for SSB. To maintain
intelligibilty while the width is narrowed, the low end must remain at
about 300 Hz, while the High end can be reduced dramatically.

For use with CW, the shift and width controls are more useful - just
reduce the width, and the center frequency stays the same (usually at
your sidetone pitch). Slight changes in the shift control may be in
order, but normally it will remain fixed.

These days when I buy *any* appliance it's with the understanding I can get
a full refund if I find it creates RFI issues.

Frustrating that our current laissez-faire approach to business in America
has robbed the FCC of any ability to put a stop to these emitters.

The display only has a relatively few segments compared to the steps and
runs out of display segments rapidly. The dark segments represent the
relative passband bandwidth based on the mode. If the passband is
centered then the segments will be centered over the arrows below the
line the passband segments "sit" on. If higher then the segments will
be to the right and if lower then to the left.

Mostly it's just a nice visual aid showing the relative passband width
and shift. The real information is in the VFO B display when the
settings are changed.

For the first year or so after assembly my main tuning knob just made a very
faint noise that was smooth and consistent. However, beginning around last
Field Day, the knob has tended to stick in certain spots, accompanied by
much louder noise. This happens only when I press on the knob, as is always
my habit. (I use one finger on the edge of the know rather than using the
dimple.) I just took the knob off. The felt washer looked normal. After I
put the knob back on, it behaved in the same way. My theory is that some
grains of dirt have found their way into the felt. I guess it is time to
replace the felt washer with the second one that came with the kit, or ditch
  the friction altogether.

Gary, it may be easier to visualize each control manipulating a variable
high pass and low pass filter. The Lo Cut cuts off low frequencies, or
rather, sets the cutoff frequency of a high pass filter. The Hi Cut
does likewise, except it controls the cutoff frequency of a low pass
filter. They allow you to adjust either side of the passband
independently. You can acheive the same thing with the Width and Shift
controls it's just that the way the K3 is set up using Width works well
on CW as it adjusts both cutoff frequencies but maintains a constant
center frequency of the passband. On SSB using either the Lo or Hi Cut
controls can significantly reduce QRM from one side or the other.

On my recently departed FT-920 only the Lo and Hi Cut controls were
available in the DSP. I like the K3's selection of either way of doing
it depending on the situation. Over this past SSB Sweepstakes I found
the Lo/Hi Cut indespensible for digging stations from between others.

Experiment!

Re: [Elecraft] Why XIT when A->B/SPLIT works [Was:Re: Does knowing the DXpedition has K3's change your]

2010-11-24 Thread Rick Prather
My preferred way of doing this is a macro:

SWT13;SWT13;FT1;UPB5;RT0;XT0;

I have this assigned to my PF1 key and when a station says they are listening
"up" I just hold PF1 and am ready to go.

This macro sets the split to 2 Khz but you can change the value of "UPB" to
whatever your preferred initial split is. For example if you prefer to start
at 5 Khz split you can edit it to "UPB7" .

This has become my most used Macro!

[Elecraft] K3 Micro Manual iPhone App

2010-11-24 Thread Michael Downs
If you are a K3 owner/operator, you may be interested in a new iPhone
application. I call it the K3 Micro Manual as it incorporates most of the K3
Owner's Manual in a handy iPhone format. It is compatible with iPhone (iOS
3.1.3 and later), iPod Touch and iPad. It has been updated to include the
Owner's Manual Errata, and all firmware changes since the Owner's Manual was
published. Thus, it is current through November 14, 2010. In addition, I have
included operating tips from the Elecraft web site, selected emails from the
Elecraft Reflector, and operating experience.

If you think you may be interested in this app, it is now available in the
Apple App Store. It is listed under the Reference category. Just search for "K3
Owners Manual" or "ks7d." I welcome your input on enhancements to this
application, and for your favorite operating tips. I plan updates over time to
this app to keep it current with the latest Elecraft Owner's Manual, and to add
new features.

[Elecraft] Plasma TV Noise any ideas on how to filter it out.

2010-11-24 Thread goldtr8

When our plasma TV is on it has a very strong interference that no
combination of the NB, NR, or Filters have any effect on the K3.

I am wondering if an active audio filtering system such as the DHL out
of England may help.

I have searched the web for ideas and I have not found anything for
ideas on how to elemiante this problem.

One thing I know for sure is that I took a day off and unplugged the TV
and the bands were all workable today. Ok I could hear but I need some

[Elecraft] RX Ant isolation?

2010-11-24 Thread Bob Redmon
I tried using my beverages with the K3 for the first time this evening.
When I transmit (100w...no amp), the output on the K3 goes nuts and
starts peaking up well above 100 w. It kept doing it until I
disconnected the beverage and power cycled the K3. I know I am not the
only fellow using beverages (closest point to transmit antenna is 150
feet). I have never had this problem with other radios. How are others
setting up for RX antennas?

It's now on the Elecraft web site.

By the way, P3 Utility includes macro buttons for the P3, so you can
program your favorite setups and select them with one button press. See

[Elecraft] Why XIT when A->B/SPLIT works [Was:Re: Does knowing the DXpedition has K3's change your]

2010-11-24 Thread Larry 'Rebar' Rebarchik - N6CCH
From the sound if this, you do not have a second VFO, me too.
Why not use A->B and then hold A->B for SPLIT and tune the B freq up the
desired offset amount with the second VFO knob?
You'll see the TX arrow pointing down to the B frequency to be sure you
are running SPLIT.

Before I learned to do this I was doing the XIT thing, but found that
the A-to-B method works a lot better and is preserved between band
changed and also with WriteLog S&P memories I can recall everything the
way it was when I saved it.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Computer problem - need advice

I'd suggest downloading the Ultimate Boot CD and running Memtest86 for 24
hours. Usually when there are memory errors, they will happen immediately, but
if it does make it past the first few minutes a 24 hour burn in sometimes will
throw some errors, which still means there is bad memory in the machine.

[Elecraft] [K3] Tight Spot in VFO A Rotation

2010-11-24 Thread Roy Morris
I experienced a "tightness" at one place during the VFO A rotation. Removing
the knob and repositioning the felt washer did not fix it. I removed the felt
washer, the three screws holding the clear plastic plate, two VFO shaft nuts,
carefully shifted the shaft of the encoder to make sure it was exactly
perpendicular to the front panel and replaced everything. This cured the
"tight spot" in my VFO A rotation. Roy Morris W4WFB

Given that three of the Germans plus SP5XVY were members of the VP6DX team
which outed the K-3 into the DXpedition environment, and given that personal
messages from some of these guys indicated that the transceiver lineup would
be K-3s, I am suggesting there is a high percentage of possibility that the
expedition is POWERED BY ELECRAFT.

The K3 uses a fiber disk to provide the friction. The result is a
slight bit of noise as the knob rotates along the disk. I've read
suggestions to use various other materials including felt. When the
AF is up I don't even notice it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO converter/Knob

2010-11-24 Thread Wes Stewart
What "fiber"?  Mine was a kit and the material was definitely felt washers (2
in the kit).

I could never get the feel I wanted and didn't like the sound either. I
replaced the washers with a single, larger homemade felt washer that just fits
the recess in the knob and is glued in, so there is only one sliding surface.
Just a tiny swish now and acceptable feel, hopefully without too much loading
on the bearing(s) in the shaft encoder.

Yes. If you don't want FC to change, switch to the Width/Shift controls.
It's a feature, not a bug (TM).

I would presume so as my understanding is that all of this "magic" takes
place in the DSP and the crystal filters operate at a fixed offset, if
required.

Hi K3 fans

Speaking about HI and LO Cut controls. I have notice this:

Tune a carrier at for example, 1 KHz tone.
Set a computer waterfall with enough frequency resolution to see few Hz
changes
Play with HI and LO Cut controls up and down (of course, let the 1 KHz
signal pass trough the filter).

Result, the carrier frecuency will be shifted by a few Hz.

Do you hace same results in your K3?

Do Low and Hi Cut controls only have effect on the DSP filters?

Thanks, Ramiro.

One advantage of assembling the K3 from a kit is that you learn how it is built

Nate,

Your explanation is excellent.

One of the things I miss in the Rice Box Radio manuals are the diagrams used to
describe this type of thing. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand
words.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 LoCut/HiCut

2010-11-24 Thread Amateur Radio Operator N5GE
I see that the question has been answered, but I would like to tell you how I
find the answers to questions about operating the K3.

I keep a copy of the LATEST K3 operating manual on my desk-top (computer).

When I get confused about how something works or want to learn what it's for, I
use the find functionality of Adobe Reader to search for the answer in the
manual.

For example: Searching for the words "low cut" takes one to explanations on page
23.

Searching for "filter controls" takes one to pages 5, 9, 14, and 23.

After, or while reading the information on those pages and trying them out as I
do, so I get a pretty good idea of their purpose.

Please don't interpret this as an admonition. It is meant to advise.

Experiment!

Tonight i enjoyed (really) the first tests of my k2 #6995. The anxious moments
in which i gave the power supply for the first time to' my baby.no smell,
no smoke!! WOW
What a music for my ears those clicks from the relays, what a beautiful green
that wonderfull display, what smoothness that encoder. Yen i know i'm terribly
romantic, but it has been a great moment in my short life of ham radio operator.
The only disappoint was to a passage of manual: in the first step of tests we
must be sure of putting s1 on off position and give supply, then the manual
says that we should see info102 on the display and so on. Only on the next step
it says to put on on position s1 In my condition of newbie i was terrified
by the fact that in this way nothing happens till when you switch on s1. A bit
of fear, a bit of brain and..switch on that baby, c'mon!!! That's all
there, well done! At lesa till now ;D

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rx IMD

2010-11-24 Thread Guy Olinger K2AV
You do know that you cannot do valid IMD sweep measurements with AGC on?

First thing I have to do for any measurements is turn off the AGC and set
fixed levels. Particularly very fast config of fast AGC won't work. It
won't be valid for absolute measurements, but the bandwidth needs to be at
least four times the spacing of the two to prevent AGC severely warping the
content. And then you will need to provide your single tone sweep
selectivity EXTERNAL to the K3. Your fast AGC is pulling up the IMD tones
by changing the RX gain during the sweep.

Given that three of the Germans plus SP5XVY were members of the VP6DX team
which outed the K-3 into the DXpedition environment, and given that personal

be K-3s, I am suggesting there is a high percentage of possibility that the

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rx IMD

2010-11-24 Thread Ramiro Aceves
Hello all

As David suggested we continue the discussion on the list. I have done
some new poor man tests, using a local AM carrier on Medium Wave at 917
KHz. For generating the other tone, I am using the same home made DDS
generator as before. At this lower frequencies the signal generated by
the DDS is much more cleaner. The antenna is a 6.5m long dipole on the
balcony and an open wire feeder as in the earlier tests, but using only
one half of the dipole by just directly connecting one open wire end to
the K3 antenna connector. The reasons of doing that is that my T match
tunner does not work below 1.8 MHz. This eliminates the posibility of
IMD products produced on the tuner toroids. It does not remove, just in
case, other no-linearities found everywhere as suggested by (sorry for
my poor english, I hope you understand me).

10 Hz spacing, ACG-F:

http://ea1abz.ure.es/acg-F.png

Now with AGC-S, notice the strong reduction of IMD:

http://ea1abz.ure.es/agc-S.png

Now see the AGS-S to AGC-S-soft transition on the middle of the capture:

http://ea1abz.ure.es/agc-S_vs_agc-soft.png

Now see the IMD at 100Hz spacing, AGC-F to AGC-S transition at the
middle of the screen:

http://ea1abz.ure.es/100Hz.png

Sorry for the poor noise floor, is the Madrid band noise received by the
antenna. Hi.

I see that the IMD problem is worse with small carrier distances. At 100
Hz spacing they are much more weaker and not problematic.

I noticed that if I'm on 6m, with the PR6 selected (press RX ANT) and Preamp
on (press PRE), then the P3 makes a click-click noise about every 9 seconds.
When it does so, I get a horizontal red line across the waterfall display.

Any thoughts?

Michael

Seriously, I'm sure it's coincidence, but I worked the ZL8 on my third call,
which is pretty amazing for my puny signal. I spent hours calling the PJs.

As I said, mental telepathy :-)

BTW, about what I said spots. Since my last message a few minutes ago, I
worked ZL8X on 15M CW. I then heard him say QSY SSB. I tuned to their
announced operating freq, set XIT to +5 and waited. When he made his first CQ I
got him on one call, with my 40-meter inverted-vee.

Then for the heck of it, I spotted him on the Internet. If I was sitting
around waiting for spots, I would now be in a pileup competing with guys with
beams.

First you assume that everyone uses spots. Some of us do not. (I know I'm in
the minority here)

Second, if a DX station is working split, you don't know where he is listening
but I doubt that he is using 50 Hz BW, especially if he's working a mode other
than CW :-)

I think your "getting through" better is more a function of mental telepathy

[Elecraft] [K3] ZL8X on 160 from Arkansas

2010-11-24 Thread Nick-WA5BDU
I've been turning on 160 the first thing in the morning for a couple
weeks, ever since putting elevated radials under my inverted L, and
hearing nothing but noise and a couple U.S. super stations calling CQ
DX. Did I mention there was a wasp on the window outside my room yesterday?

So this morning the cluster reported that he was on 1.826.5 and
eventually I was able to barely hear him. Using every trick in the K3's
tool box including APF, I could finally make him out sending his call,
but he was ESP level. I put in my call a few times without much hope of
working him. After one last time, I decided to go cook some oatmeal and
maybe check again in 30 minutes, so I pushed the TX standby switch on
the rig as I always do when I walk away from it. I don't want the cats
working DX with my call.

Just as I was pulling the phones off, I heard: DU? So I mashed the TX
standby switch for the eternity of one-half second it takes to go back
to active. While doing this, I felt a tiny breeze on the back of my
hand -- that red wasp was attempting a landing. I heard the beep and
moved my hand to the paddle, the wasp landed on the K3's display, and I
sent 'WA5BDU' a couple times. He came back 'WA5BDU 5NN' and naturally
he was 5NN too. New 160M country in the log and another thing to be
thankful for.

[Elecraft] Does knowing the DXpedition has K3's change your expectations?

2010-11-24 Thread John Harper
I upgraded to the K3 from a very old, very basic rig and am unsure if other
modern rigs are capable of such a narrow bandwidth that is actually useful, ie
w/o ringing.

With a 50Hz bandwidth, I'm learning that spotting the last station worked by
the DX is much more accurate than would be possible if I had to use say a 250Hz
bandwidth. And with a K3 on the other end (the DX station) presumedly dialed to
a narrow width also, he's only going to hear those who've spotted him precisely.

As I said, I'm not sure if these bandwidths are unique to the K3 but, coming
from an FT840, I sure seem to be getting thru the pile-ups more easily than I
use to and believe this may be the reason as it's the only thing that's changed

Re: [Elecraft] K3 LEDs light up, but won't come to life

2010-11-24 Thread Mike Harris
G'day,

Less than 20mV in all circumstances as measured on my Fluke 8020B.
Unfortunately I don't have a 'scope so I can't look at the frequency
component. I used to have access to an earth stations worth of
fancy test equipment so never bought my own!

I really don't think it is a PSU issue. Something is stalling the
logic, maybe not enough time for internal supplies or logic states
to settle before ignition sequence starts.

That would be the first conclusion that one would jump to, but
  wait

On my wife's mini-tower running XP Pro SP3, the "cannot find
boot drive" would come up frequently, sometimes within an hour
after rebooting. It was clean-up time:

Make sure you have a full backup of all partitions.

Run VIPRE (virus/malware program) - no malware.

Run Registry Mechanic - found and repaired several hundred
   registry errors.

Clean caches - dumps all sorts of stuff. (XP has a facility
   for that)

Reseat connectors for hard drive and memory sticks.

It took several cycles of the above to really clean it up, but
it hasn't misbehaved since - we leave it on 24/7.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Rx IMD

2010-11-24 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Sorry for being slow to reply.

Oh yes, a coil wound on a core made from "Ferrite" or "Powdered Iron" will
be a source of IMD products, the culprit being the core. The level of the
IMD products generated by a core depends on a number of factors, which we
could discuss "Off List" if you wish.

While I understand Lyle's point concerning the AGC, I cannot shake my
suspicion that something in or near your antenna is behaving as a mixer, and
is the source of IMD products. The problem with adding the DDS' signal by
coupling to the antenna is that you have no control over "unwanted" mixers
in the vicinity. To disprove (or confirm) my suspicion, my suggestion is
that you build a hybrid combiner, and use it to inject the BC and DDS
signals into the K3.

Re: [Elecraft] RIT/XIT offset control moves vfo A in large steps?

2010-11-24 Thread Dick Dievendorff
See CONFIG: VFO OFS on page 62 of the current K3 Owner's manual. VFO OFS
turns it on and off, and CONFIG:VFO CRS sets the tuning rate (per mode).

In the K3 Utility program, ver 1.3.11.5, if you hit Help, then K3 Utility
Help, and look in the Contents tab and then Help over the Web, and then
Frequently Asked Questions you get to a fantastic document telling all about
features of the K3.

I suspect some parts of this document is out-of-date and discusses features
that were changed or not implemented yet but I want to be sure because this
is a feature I
would like to make use of. It says, "When RIT and XIT are both off, the
offset
control advances VFO A in large steps, defined by the operator on a per-mode
basis (e.g. 2.5 kHz for SSB, 5/9/10 kHz for AM, etc.)." This doesn't work
on my rig. Is there something I failed to set up to get this to work, or is
it not implemented yet?

Hi Barry,

If you can get access to the memory simms/cards then you might try removing and
re-inserting them. This has been known to fix that sort of problem. It's a
no-cost action that might save you some $$$.

2010-11-24 Thread Nick-WA5BDU
Rick-

This is a great feature for large QSYs.

In my manual (revision D2), it's on page 59 at the bottom. In the VFO
CRS entry, it says to set CONFIG:VFO OFS to "ON". (Well, maybe I should
have directed you to the VFO OFS entry on page 60 first.)

Some people prefer to leave it off because they bump the knob and do an
inadvertent QSY.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 KPA100 tests

2010-11-24 Thread Don Wilhelm
  Mike,

How old is this KPA100(does it have red toroid cores or blue ones), and
do you have the KDSP2 installed? These may seem like unrelated
questions, but actually they are not. A looong time ago (with the older
KPA100 T/R switch design) there was a problem with "click on unmute"
when the KDSP2 also was installed. The new T/R switch design corrected it.

OK on your wattmeter - if you used a "Larry" calibrated LP100 to set the
KPA100 wattmeter, I think it is set right. The LP-100 is one of the few
wattmeters I trust.

Good morning Don, The R8 was set to hold but I changed it to normal and tried
the chirp was still there. I then went back to hold and tried again still a
chirp. As you said it is not doing the rig any harm so I will just leave it
as is. The watt meter that I am using is the LP-100A that I built and I had
sent it down to Larry for calibration. Now having said that I meter does go
through 2 LDG antenna switches before the rig. So I am on the weekend going
to remove them and just have the rig and dummy load between the watt meter
and see how it goes from there.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Latest Beta FW - Vox, TX Gate and Notch

2010-11-24 Thread W7BRS Jeff Wandling
In reference to (email below), the observations are also noticed here.

First, thanks Lyle for looking at it. Let us know if we're hearing things?

I had run 3.97 since I purchased the K3 (2nd K3), and was reluctant to
upgrade Firmware. Fear of nightmare SS QRM made me decide to feast on the
new DSP to see if I could survive the maelstrom. Wrong. The audio gaps
are there as described below. Further, it occurs also when adjusting WIDTH
even when on the same xtal. I noticed it on 4.22, and 4.19. I'm back to
3.97. I prefer releases that are outta-beta; I believe that K3s are
shipped with the latest release that's gold-disc worthy. I haven't figured
out if the release numbers mean anything or not. Or how to tell a blood
dripping leading edge release vs. a version that has been regressed against
the backlog in Gnats.

I've used K3's for a long time (2 years), so unless something fundamental
has changed there is definitely a unique change to the code that creates a
silent audio (did I just write that) gap when making certain adjustments:
WIDTH on the same xtal (not the gap you hear when you flip from FL1 to FL2
when adjusting WIDTH). Or activating NOTCH, etc..

Gary at Elecraft did a fine job trying to help. No worries Gary.

But I think there's something to look at here. This isn't expected
behavior.

And, while we're talking about NOTCH --

How many of you would like this: Whatever your NOTCH setting is, it is
preserved on power cycle similar to the way NB, NR, AGC, etc.. are preserved
on power cycle.

73 and DX,

-jeff

That makes sense. Once generated they would be increased by the K3 "AGC
pump" How can I test that?. Can the toroid inside the antenna T tunner
be the culprit? Any ideas to test will be welcome.
Anyway, Kok tests so that AGC-F makes IMD.
