Re: [Elecraft] Sub RX Question (SSB AUDIO)

2012-10-01 Thread Mike K2MK
Hi Dave,

First you have to be really sure which antenna is being used on 10 meters.
Lets say you are using your main antenna for the sub RX on all bands. Just
one small errant button push could accidentally change the antenna selection
on 10 meters only. This selection is saved on a per band basis so it will
stay that way forever unless you correct it.

Other things are saved as well. For example you are probably using your
preamp for 10 meters on the main RX. Press the bset button and verify that
you are also using it for 10 meters. Generally it's a good idea to push the
A/B button twice when using the sub RX. This forces all sorts of parameters
to be identical to the main RX.

If you are using your main antenna for both receivers and you accidentally
engage diversity reception I'm pretty sure the K3 tells the sub RX to use
the AUX antenna (since separate antennas are mandatory for diversity). Look
at the upper display and make sure the second decimal point is not blinking.
(The blinking decimal point is the only way we know we are in diversity).

Mike K2MK

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 and RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread DGB

I determined the cause was a flaw in the recent shack remodeling. I had
the K-3 and the amp. under a shelf that apparently wasn't allowing
enough air flow. Even though I had the more then the recommended
clearances for air flow, that was not enough. I put the amp. out in the
wide open Sunday morning and ran all day at 500 watts on all bands
without incident. In addition the temperature in the shack was around 75
degrees Sat. night, apparently compounding the accumulation of heat
under the shelf.

Thank you all for your responses and insight.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-500 and RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread John K3TN
Same experience here: K3 driving the KPA-500 on 220v to about 500w out with
23-26w drive, depending on band. When RTTY CQing, with reasonable period
between CQs (like 3-4 seconds), amp temp gets up to 57-60c and the fan does
its thing.

When I'm getting answers to every CQ, amp temp usually stays below 58c and
lower when I'm S&Ping. If I'm fighting to keep a frequency and leave less
time between CQs, amp temp will go up in high 60s but I then back off and
have never gotten a HI TEMP warning.

I find it to be a FB amp for medium power RTTY work.

[Elecraft] [K2] Intermittent KPA100 "not inst" and Info 080 issue - Humidity??

2012-10-01 Thread Bill Coleman
In the last couple of months I diagnosed and fixed a problem with the KPA100.
There were two failures -- one was U6 -- EL5146C which was shorted internally
and kept the KPA100 microprocessor from receiving the +5 volts it required. The
second were failures in the 1N5711 Schottky diodes D16 and D17 -- they failed
as partially working.

I recently operate the K2/100 during the CQWW RTTY and it didn't give me any
trouble. However, today I got into the shack to work a couple of contacts at
lunch, and I'm greeted with Info 080.

A little more background -- even after fixing the issue, I would occasionally
see an "not inst" error when pressing the Ant 1/2 switch. Sometimes the KAT100
wouldn't light up immediately when switching the K2 on. When it did this, I'd
generally see the "not inst" problem. Cycling the power switch would generally
cure the problem.

I saw this issue once before, right before Field Day. I'd set up my rig in my
camper, and then the next morning it gave me Info 080. At the time, I believe
part of the problem was due to humidity. If I leave the rig on, eventually the
problem seems to resolve itself.

There's something that definitely seems to be sensitive to humidity and the
action of the AUXBUS.

As I write this, it is 75 degrees F and 87% humidity in my unheated storage
room shack. The K2 initially had several segments in the display that were only
partially dark, but now they are dark black. Initially, there was no sound out
of the speaker, and it would "tick" when I turned the main tuning dial. Perhaps
if I wait long enough, it will eventually dry out.

Any clue how to diagnose this problem? Are there components which are
particularly sensitive to humidity? Why does this affect the AUXBUS operation?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 - auto-notch question

2012-10-01 Thread Bill
I use the auto-notch a lot - mostly to get rid of the tuner-uppers on 40
and 75 meters
SSB. It does its job of removing the offending tones well. However, it
does introduce a
slight artifact into the received audio. Is there any means to get rid
of the artifact?

I also use a Kenwood TS-480 (simple and inexpensive rig) as a backup.
The auto-notch
also works very well on that rig. But.. the 480 does NOT exhibit
any artifacts.

Perhaps I have a setting in the K3 done incorrectly - any suggestions?

[Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread Joe K2UF
I had the following two problems during the RTTY contest this past weekend.

1.- I had to reset the mode from FSK D to AFSK A many times. Usually when
I changed bands or a large change in frequency within the same band. When I
get to the top of the band and want to go back to the bottom of the band I
would type the frequency in N1MM. Radio would QSY to the new frequency but
the mode would revert back to FSK D. This would not happen every time but
quite often.

2.- Using the K3 / KPA500 setup with N1MM running on a Win XP desktop pc
with a soundMAX sound card. The K3 running about 25 watts and the LINE IN
level set at 10 the KPA500 power out would start at about 60 to 70 watts.
Each time I would call/work someone the power out on the KPA500 would
increase. After 8 or 10 calls/Qs the power would be up to 400 to 500 watts.
If I changed the power level on the K3 down 1 watt and then back up 1 watt
the process would start all over again. I do not have the same problem on
CW. I have not used the amp in a CW contest yet, but I have worked several
DXpeditions/DX stations sometimes calling for over an hour. The amp output
would stay where it was set.

I have looked over the K3 manual and could not find any hints about problem
1. Problem 2 is a real puzzler.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks Joe K2UF

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread Don Wilhelm
Joe,

I don't know anything in the K3 that would cause your problem 1, but I
strongly suspect that is an N1MM related situation.

My guess on your problem 2 is that you were not driving the audio hard
enough.
With the K3, you cannot follow the frequent advice given for data modes
to "set the power to max and use the audio drive to bring up the power
to the desired level" -- that WILL NOT work well with the K3. Do as the
K3 manual indicates, set the audio level for 4 ALC meter bars solid with
the 5th one flashing (you can do that in TX TEST so you do no0t bother
anyone on the air) - then set the power knob for the desired power.

Failure to follow those instructions will result in "power creep" like
you were seeing.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread Matt Maguire
For problem 2, it sounds like you are providing insufficient drive to the K3,
and this causes "power creep" as the K3 tries to compensate.

What does your ALC meter read? It should have 4 steady bars with the fifth bar
flickering. Then, you can set the desired output power level with the power
level control.

2012-10-01 Thread Matt Maguire
Sorry, I should have been a little clearer -- it seems you are providing
insufficient *audio* drive to the K3.

Second what Don said. Has to be in AFSK drive adjustment.

Here identical N1MM/K3/KPA500 except ran FSK. Power always went up to

In N1MM Logger, "Config" -> "Configure Ports..." -> "Digital Modes" (tab)

Check that "DI-1 MMTTY Setup" -> "MMTTY Mode" is set to "AFSK".

and on the "Mode Control" tab, set the "Mode sent to radio" for "RTTY"
to "AFSK".

[Elecraft] Really wide VGA monitor cursor for VFO B when split

2012-10-01 Thread ai6ii
When running split CW and a particularly small bandwidth setting like Span
10, the VGA monitor freq indicator is huge, and unlike the P3's screen not
as 'transparent', that is it is a distractedly prominent nearly solid red.
When I am trying to find an empty spot to transmit in a pile up, it is hard
to see where I am fitting in. I am not sure what controls the width of this
cursor or the colors, but I hopefully can find a better way to set this up.
I understand the the green cursor's 'shadow' width is set by the filter
width I am using on receive, so it is likely the width of the transmit
cursor will not be able to be changed. But can the shadow color be toned
back a little?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread D Joyce
Hi Joe: I've had a problem similar to your #1 for over a year now. In my
case while running FSK the K3 (Ser 2432) would switch from 45 to 75 baud all
by itself in the middle of the contest - it may have been after a band or
large frequency change, I don't remember now. I also had a problem with the
K3 remembering the custom settings for the Filter Presets I & II. They
seemed to be lost following a power on/off cycle.

The last time I checked with Support I was told that Wayne was aware of one
or both of these and would be working on them once the design work on the
KX3 was completed. I haven't checked lately so don't know the current
status.

As to your problem #2, I haven't seen any of that since I'm running FSK
rather than AFSK.

[Elecraft] K3 - Sensitivity on 10 Meters

2012-10-01 Thread Dave Hachadorian
During the CQWW RTTY Contest this past weekend, I got the feeling
that the K3 receiver could have used some additional RF gain. I
was using the 250 Hz filter with +4 dB of I.F. gain dialed in.
Switching the preamp on and off produced just a barely
perceptible change in the background noise. I seem to remember a
previous discussion about the need for a ten-meter preamp, but
haven't heard any more about it. Has anyone done a test to see
if the minimum detectable signal is up to snuff on 10?

Fifteen meters was better, but still less than what I expected
when switching the preamp in and out.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Intermittent KPA100 "not inst" and Info 080 issue - Humidity??

2012-10-01 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

Combining the "not inst" message with the Info 080 are indicators that
you likely have a problem with the KAT100. I would first open the
bottom and look carefully and critically at the soldering, particularly
in the front corner where the firmware IC is located.

If your K2 is sensitive to temperature (within a normal range) and
humidity, you have one or more soldering problems. I would suggest
re-flowing the solder with a hot iron (750 degF),
Review the Soldering Tutorial on the Elecraft website if you do not know
what constitutes a good solder connection. It is critical that both the
solder pad and the component lead receive enough heat to flow the solder
out to an almost invisible edge on both the solder pad and the component
lead - that will usually produce a concave shaped fillet. If the fillet
is convex, it is a suspect connection (likely bad).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sensitivity on 10 Meters

2012-10-01 Thread Wayne Burdick
Hi Dave,

Our PR10 preamp module has an MDS in the -143 to -144 range on 10
meters. It doesn't get much better than that on any ham transceiver.
(Using it with a K3 requires a KXV3 or KXV3A module as well, since it
gets patched through the RX ANT IN/OUT jacks.)

The stock MDS of the K3 on 10 meters is typically -136 dBm. This is
consistent with a radio optimized for very high dynamic range.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread Brian Alsop
Hi Doug,

Interesting. How do you know it's the K3 and not the logging program.
Or some other piece of hardware doing interfacing? Could RFI be a
cause? You don't say what your setup for RTTY is.

I'm been running RTTY contests with the K3 for years using a hardware
TNC in FSK. At times we've been up to 1500 watts. I've never seen this
first problem despite being mostly S&P with lots of band and large freq
changes. I've only been bit by the 75 baud problem once. That was when
75 baud was introduced in firmware and became the default. After fixing
that once, it has never been seen again.

Then again, maybe I've just been lucky.

[Elecraft] (SSB AUDIO) THANKS TO ALL

2012-10-01 Thread Dave Weiss
Hi Gang:

Well I spent the day re-reading all of your messages on this subject and
also the manual! I think I am straight once again on antenna selection, RX
ANT button, BSET and A>B etc.

If I notice any other issues, I know the best Hams on the K3 reflector will
listen up!

Thanks again to you all.

In response to a recent question about the K3's rx sensitivity on 10M, you
mentioned the "PR10" preamp. New product? Or the result of sleep deprivation?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread D Joyce
Hi Brian: I haven't been on RTTY too much recently so the problem hasn't
occured for some time. That being said, I'm going to see if I can pin
things down a bit and report back.

The setup is a K3 with a microKeyer II running with a KPA500 at about 300W.
I'm using MMTTY (within DX4Win) for non contest operations and MMTTY with
N1MM for contests - FSK in both cases.

Thanks for your comments.

Hi Michael,

The transmit width is not affected by the receive bandwidth, as you figured
out. Let me play around with the Tx indicator's color and see if I can make
something work for a future release.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Couple of issues during CQWW RTTY

2012-10-01 Thread Richard Ferch
Joe,

Problem 1 is probably mainly an N1MM Logger configuration issue. In the
Configurer under Mode Control, right side ("Mode sent to radio"), beside
RTTY change the two list boxes to read AFSK in order to select AFSK A on
the K3 (RTTY is N1MM's terminology for the K3's FSK D mode). If you use
PSK, beside PSK change the list boxes to read PSK (N1MM's terminology
for DATA A on the K3).

There is also an interaction with the way the K3 remembers its data
sub-modes. Data sub-mode (and the 45/75 baud speed) are remembered by
the K3's firmware on a per-band basis, so setting the radio to AFSK A on
one band will leave it in FSK D on other bands if that's where it was
before. You may need to go through all the bands to set the K3 back to
AFSK A on each one; the N1MM Mode Control configuration only takes
effect when the program starts up and/or when you change modes from
CW/SSB to data, not when you change bands without changing the mode.

Problem 2, as has been noted, sounds like an audio drive issue. It's not
the number on the LINE IN control that matters, it's the reading on the
ALC meter. Set the audio drive and LINE IN level to produce 4-5 bars on
the K3's ALC meter and use the PWR control to control the power.

If that's what you are already doing, maybe you should try re-doing the
TX Gain Calibration step from the K3 manual.

73,
Rich VE3KI

2012-10-01 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

Paul,

The TX cursor is incorrect in DATA A ... it still shows the default
bandwidth for FSK D/AFSK A. With DATA A the transmit bandwidth can
be anything from < 100 Hz for PSK31 anyplace within the 2.7/2.8 KHz
filter to more than 1 KHz for some of the MFSK/Olivia modes.

[Elecraft] Is SignaLink needed with KX3?

2012-10-01 Thread K1NUN
My KX3, assembled, is due to be delivered in a few days (ordered 28-Aug at the
New England Division Hamfest). I am debating whether to sell my SignaLink
digimode interface that I used with my TS2000. (I am selling the TS2K to
finance the new KX3.)

My question to the group, please, is should I keep the SL for use with the KX3,
or can the KX3 operate with my computer directly and simply? (Offers on the
TS2K can be made off list!)

[Elecraft] [P3] SVGA Instant Peak Trace

I have noticed an instantaneous random blue peak trace across my external
monitor when my P3 is first turned on. It just as quickly goes away and all
is normal. The trace vertical height and horizontal location varies each
time the P3 is turned on. This trace does not appear on the P3 display.
Also it doesn't appear every time the P3 is turned on. I am curious to know
if anyone else has noticed this. Roy W4WFB

Re: [Elecraft] Is SignaLink needed with KX3?

2012-10-01 Thread Don Wilhelm
Eric,

The KX3 may need some sort of interface for digital modes because it has
galvanic isolation on the audio lines. So keep it until you get your
KX3 up and running so you can experiment between the SL and direct
connection to your computer soundcard.

I like to be safe and use a galvanic isolator to keep the noise to a
minimum.

Re: [Elecraft] My one and only bitch about the KX3...

2012-10-01 Thread Andrew Moore
The manual states:

"*Loosen the two rear thumbscrews before adjusting the legs. Tighten
them afterwards.*"

...and if that method is followed, it's simple and works 100 percent. If
the leg movement were simply friction-based without screws, it would be
even simpler, but maybe at the expense of them loosening up over time due
to mechanical wear and not being able to be adjusted.

(Of course that doesn't invalidate your preference for being able to just
move the legs without dealing with the screws.)

Sounds like fun, Wes. Drop by my place for some live entertainment
next time you and your Fiancée are in the Bay Area. I play a few home-
grown blues tunes. We might be able to convince my 8-year-old son to
