[Elecraft] FS: KX3
I have a Elecraft KX3 that I recently bought but my plans have changed so I am selling it to help fund other purchases. It is about 2 months old and is in perfect condition electrically and physically. From a non smoking environment. It was assembled from a kit by an experienced Elecraft Kit builder in Nov 2012 and easily meets the specs for power output as per the manual 10 watts on 160-15 and 8 watts on 12-6 meters. It has the optional band pass filter, battery charger unit, Hand Microphone, accessory cable kit, power cord with power pole connector, and also 8 Rayovac 2100 mah niMH batteries. also all manuals, etc. There is NO Tuner in it. I will ship and insure this in the US for $1095 for a US Postal money order or we can discuss PayPal if you want it quicker. I can ship today Dec 31st if I get PayPal before 10 AM. [Elecraft] K2 For sale correction, my bad
Hi- While typing in the accessories for my K2 that is for sale I inadvertently skipped a line as I read the list on the Elecraft web page. It does not have the KAF2 audio filter, it does have the KDSP2 advanced audio filter though, and it does have the KIO2 serial port adapter as the rig has been used with the external amplifier/ auto tuner which requires the KIO2. The rig also has a dedicated Kenwood hand mic. 73 de Dave in NH K1OPQ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Are there any power requirements for the KUSB cable? I have looked all over the Elecraft page. If the answer is there, I cannot find it. Re: [Elecraft] USB Cable Power Requirements
Joel, I have a MacBook Air that has only ONE USB port. I have a Targus non-powered USB octopus plugged into it. Into that I have plugged the KUSB cable, a Mac USB keyboard, a Newer Technologies 1TB external hard drive, and a USB cable for my SignaLink USB device. And, on occasion, I plug my AIM-4170 antenna analyzer into it. You may not need a powered hub unless you have some other power-hungry device to run. Re: [Elecraft] USB Cable Power Requirements
AFAICT, there is no specific power requirement mentioned for the KUSB (nor for the Sabrent equivalent that I purchased at my local Tiger Direct store), which means that, probably, it's safely within the 100mA power limit imposed by the USB spec. BUT, you should be aware that the Signalink USB *does* require an external powered USB hub, because it draws close to 500mA, and says so in its specs, etc. I'm running it and the Sabrent off of a 7-port hub that I bought at Staples (yes, ouch... - do shop around if you can, and balance availability vs. shipping costs, etc.) and have also run, at the same time, an SCS PTC-ii USB off of that hub as well as a PS/2 keyboard and mouse when I had it all attached to an Acer netbook. (These days, I'm running just the Signalink and the Sabrent to the iMac). I have had problems with the mini-USB plug on the hub loosening up on me, however, so if you have time to shop around, it's something to closely inspect. [Elecraft] K2 Filter Alignment
Dear Folks: I am the proud owner of K2-10 #6922 and, so far, have been operating it exclusively on cw (I am building the SSB option right now, though I am a brass pounder). It is a fine radio and has caused my TS-850S and AL-80 amp to gather a lot of dust. My only problem has been the filter alignment. I have repeatedly tried to align the filters, and always seem to end up with a situation where the passband of the filters never falls within the passband of the receiver at its maximum bandwidth (I have it set for 150hz). In other words, the received signal, when the receiver is right on it, always seems to fall outside of the 70hz filter (if I tune the receiver to copy the received signal with the 70hz filter in use, and then switch to the 40 and 20hz filters, the signal stays within the bandwith). The last time I tried to align the filters, I used a noise generator and Spectrogram, and followed Tom Hammond's (N0SS) instructions. After doing this, I always need to turn on the RIT and turn a few hz below the received signal to bring it within the bandwith of the 70hz filter. What am I doing wrong? For reference purposes, I have my sidetone set for 600hz. [Elecraft] KRC2 Manual configuration?
So, I'm doing battle with my least favorite piece of Elecraft gear to manage...my KRC2. A while ago it started acting funky and after a lot of hassle I was able to update the firmware (though it was already current). At that same time I must have updated the bandmap but only now realized that it's not correct. For the life of me with various PC's both with real and with USB--Serial dongles the most I can do is re-flash the firmware, consistently; but I *cannot* write a new bandmap. Typically the config tool will see the KRC2 once and spit out the 1.6 firmware notice; after that in order for it to be seen again, I have to power cycle it, at which point I've tried to shove a bandmap on it, but it always fails, and never seems to have the changes I've made. I would just wire-OR the 3 bands of interest; but; whatever map is in there does not activate those 3 bands, ever, yet, due to another mapping, they do still source 12V as they should, just not when I need them to! Is there _any_ way to put a bandmap in by hand that doesn't use the config tool? Is the format documented so I could generate it myself and put it on via an alternate method? I'm not concerned with whether or not I'd need to write some software of my own to do this.. I just want the thing to function for me again! 73, Joe KC0VKN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 Filter Alignment
Bernie, Are you tuning the desired signal to your sidetone pitch - use the SPOT and match the signals to the same tone - when the two are quite close in pitch, you will hear a WOW WOW WOW sound of the beat frequency. When that beat sound slows down to nothing, you are at Zero Beat. Adjust the AF Gain control (and the ST L menu if needed) to make the amplitude of the sidetone and the signal about the same to hear that beat note best. If your tuning is not the problem, then give it another try with Spectrogram and a noise generator. Make certain the CW DAC values (or frequencies if you are displaying that) are lower than the CWrev values. Also make certain the menu sidetone pitch setting matches the center frequency you set for FL2, FL3 and FL4. The transmit frequency is offset by that amount by the firmware. For FL1, since it is wide, you cannot set its center at your sidetone pitch, but the passband must be entirely within the Spectrogram display. Make sure you can see the left side of the passband skirt drop down significantly before reaching zero frequency. Failure to do that will cause loss of the Single Signal reception - in other words, you will hear part of the opposite sideband. There are also instructions on my website www.w3fpr.com. Look at part 3 of the article on K2 Dial Calibration. BTW - multiply those widths by 10. That is a 700 Hz filter, not 70 Hz. The last zero is not displayed. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/31/2012 12:42 PM, Bernie KF0QS wrote: Dear Folks: I am the proud owner of K2-10 #6922 and, so far, have been operating it exclusively on cw (I am building the SSB option right now, though I am a brass pounder). Re: [Elecraft] KRC2 Manual configuration?
Joe; First thing - with the V1.6 firmware, if you want to restore the default bandmap configuration, power up the KRC2 while holding down the F4 key. The real KRC2 Configuration Tool is now on the Elecraft web site. Uninstall any other KRC2 COnfig Tool versions and use this one. It should work just fine for you. After trying these two things, if you still cannot get things working, let us know. Re: [Elecraft] k-3 2 meter
No soldering is required if you order the factory built power cable. I am not sure how you found information that it is related to the 2 meter module, there really is no connection there - unless you order the external XV144 which comes only as a kit. There is no soldering for the K3 kits, mainly mechanical assembly. BTW - there are no dashes in Elecraft product designations. There are 2 exceptions within the mini modules, the N-Gen and the 2T-Gen. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/29/2012 1:20 PM, tony rowland wrote: am thinking of geting a k-3 100 w/ all the goodies. the only problem i have is the 2 meter board. am not that great at soldering. thought i read somewhere that the power pole now comes preinstalled and you no longer have to do it yourself. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hello Tony. New K3's should have the power connector pre-installed. You can confirm that when you place the order to be sure that your has it retrofitted. The connector in question is shown on page 11 of the K144XV manual. You can download it from Elecraft by clicking here: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/K144XV_Manual_Rev_C.pdf Note that this is not a PowerPole connector, it's simple one pin connector that fits in a hole in the K3's main (RF) board. 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of tony rowland Sent: Saturday, December 29, 2012 10:21 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] k-3 2 meter am thinking of geting a k-3 100 w/ all the goodies. the only problem i have is the 2 meter board. am not that great at soldering. thought i read somewhere that the power pole now comes preinstalled and you no longer have to do it yourself. s/tony rowland __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3/100 - SN 7071 - No output on SSB
OK, I just assembled this rig a few days after Christmas (I have the best XYL ever), and while I've made hundreds of successful CW contacts, I haven't had anyone hear me on SSB. When TUNE or key on CW, I get the full 100 watt output. I believe the microphone works. The VOX trips, I can hear my voice in the monitor, and adjust the ALC and CMP levels easily. However, when I flip the meter over to SWR / RF and speak, there is only one bar indication on the RF meter. No matter how much I talk / yell into the microphone. Re: [Elecraft] USB Cable Power Requirements
I have been running my SignaLink USB directly from my MacBook Pro for two years now with no problem. I checked the Wikipedia page for USB http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB and I think it has an explanation: Power ... A unit load is defined as 100 mA in USB 2.0, and 150 mA in USB 3.0. A device may draw a maximum of 5 unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 2.0; 6 (900 mA) in USB 3.0. ... Every device functions initially as low-power but the device may request high-power and will get it if the power is available on the providing bus. ... A bus-powered hub initializes itself at 1 unit load and transitions to maximum unit loads after it completes hub configuration. Any device connected to the hub will draw 1 unit load regardless of the current draw of devices connected to other ports of the hub (i.e. one device connected on a four-port hub will draw only 1 unit load despite the fact that more unit loads are being supplied to the hub). A self-powered hub will supply maximum supported unit loads to any device connected to it. ... The MacBook Pro USB ports act as a powered hub. The SignaLink probably won't work on a unpowered hub. Bill, You said you can adjust the ALC and CMP levels, but you did not tell us the level you adjusted them to. The proper way to adjust is to set the compression at zero to start, then increase the mic gain until you see 5 to 7 bars on the ALC meter (do that in TX TEST so you don't bother fellow hams). Then adjust the compression to the level you desire. If you can't get the 5 to 7 bars (7 bars on peaks) then you do not have enough mic gain. Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 - SN 7071 - No output on SSB
Tried that. The Heil Pro-Set with the HC4 crystal element really likes the high setting. It works on the low setting, but you have to crank the Mic gain way up. As like I said, I can set the Mic and CMP gain and get indications on the ALC and CMP meters, as well as hear myself speak in the monitor. The problem is NOT that the audio isn't getting into the K3/100 -- the problem is that RF is not coming out. Bill, Then the next logical thing to do is check the filter offset - look on the filter and set that offset in the menu (or K3 Utility. The offset is either positive or negative, so if it is marked with a minus sign, did you perhaps interpret that as a dash? I remove the fans to check for the 1N4148 on P68A of the KPA3 and it's not there. So two questions. [Elecraft] [KAT500] Looking for a microcontroller project that reads transceiver serial frequency messages and outputs BCD bands
I vaguely recall seeing an e-mail over the last few months describing a small microcontroller project that reads Kenwood RS-232 frequency messages and outputs the four Elecraft / Unified Microsystems / Yaesu TTL level band lines (sometimes described as a BCD encoding) described as BAND0 thru BAND3 in the K3 Owner's manual description of the ACC connector. We have a query from a Kenwood transceiver owner that would like to supply band information to his KAT500 from his Kenwood radio so that the ATU tracks band changes without requiring transmission. I believe that a commercial band decoder (very likely one of microHAM's units) might do this as well. Can someone help me find the URL of that project description? [Elecraft] Key Out issue
Hi all, Am hoping someone can help me with a problem. I have a K3 with a KD9SV rx antenna switch and use the Key Out line to toggle this device. For some reason, the K3 will not send the key Out low in CW mode via: - external software (Logger32, N1MM) - the macro buttons - a paddle plugged in the rear port It won't send it low using any software-oriented mode, e.g. voice keyer or MMVARI either. However, it does send it low when PTT is activated, i.e. by a footswitch, and will do so when the K3 is in CW mode as well as SSB so in the meantime I can toggle the rx ant switch with the footswitch. So it seems the cabling and MOSFET controlling the Key Out lien are functioning correctly. Have just downloaded the latest firmware, the latest firmware installer and the problem persists. I have tried EEINIT prior to reloading the complete firmware, tried loading older configurations etc... My usual set-up is K3/KPA500/KAT500 connected via the serial cables for control and keying. I have tried disconnecting all external equipment save the rx ant switch and used the M1-M4 macros to generate code with VOX on and it still won't operate the Key Out line. The KD9SV box also has a rig-saver interface, this is not connected to the amp. Makes no difference if in VOX or QSK off/on or set PTT to OFF-OFF and use the paddle or M1-M4 macros. Thanks, Iain. This is the project I remembered, but as sometimes happens as I age, some of the details were wrong. A similar project might be used to decode the serial data stream from any number of transceivers, perhaps with the addition of an RS-232 level shifter. And of course a small microcontroller with two serial ports might be used to read frequency information from most any CAT-enabled transceiver (using RS-232 or CI-V messages) and send KAT500 serial messages to perform memory tune operations to the bin boundary without requiring transmission. Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Looking for a microcontroller project that reads transceiver serial frequency messages and outputs BCD bands
As usual, Iain is correct. The KRC2 normally outputs standard BCD (check the KRC2 manual for details) for the band that is currently selected. The serial input selection does read Kenwood/Elecraft serial data, outputting it to the decoder terminals as well as the BCD terminals. It should work quite well in this application. 73! [Elecraft] N-gen question
Couple of questions on the N-gen: 1. The instruction sheet gives 35 dB of Excess Noise Output. Is this referenced to -174 dBm or some other? I'm seeing S0 on a KX3 with the switch OFF, and S5-6 with the switch on. Seems usable. I have S5 at -97 dBm, S6 at -91 dBm. So the reference level is around -132 to -126 dBm, if I read this spec correctly. 2. Can someone reference a data sheet for the MAR-1 MMIC? I'm going to search for it, but thought someone might have it around. The N-gen makes a nice 30 minute build, and is fun. [Elecraft] [KAT500]schematic
Hi all, Will a schematic be forthcoming soon for the KAT500? I have noticed that the port to port isolation between the 3 antenna ports is rather poor, even worse than the RX/MAIN antenna isolation on the K3 which has received plenty of complaints in the past. I am guessing that unused antenna ports are not grounded on the KAT500. Had they been, isolation should have been much better. I am surprised that Elecraft pays so little attention to these things. If the antenna relays are of the changeover kind and have been oriented correctly adding a ground shunt should be easy. But we need schematics. Anyway, it's still a great product. Happy new year! And I'm embarrassed to have had to be informed that our own KRC2 will perform a similar function. But what I was really looking for was the under $20 PIC project URL that N6ML found for me. And it might even be easier to do with a PIC that has two serial ports, one speaking Kenwood (or ICOM CI-V, or Elecraft K3), the other speaking KAT500. Re: [Elecraft] N-gen question
Matt, -174 dBm is the noise of a resistor at room temperature in a 1 Hz bandwidth. In a 500 Hz bandwidth (which seems to be the standard for receiver measurements) you get 10 * log(500) = 27 dB more, or -147 dBm thermal noise. So 35 dB excess noise is -147 + 35 = -112 dBm in a 500 Hz bandwidth. With a 2.7 kHz SSB filter, it should be -104.7 dBm. The KX3 S meter may not be accurate for noise. I expect the AGC tends to respond to peak signal level rather than RMS. That would give a higher than expected S meter reading, which is what you observed. The way to measure the N-gen output is to turn off the AGC, reduce the signal level so the audio output is not distorting (using attenuator or whatever) and measure the audio output with an RMS voltmeter. Then connect a calibrated signal generator and adjust its output level for the same meter reading. If you don't have a true RMS voltmeter you'll be off a dB or two, but it should be in the ballpark. Re: [Elecraft] N-gen question
oops, Alan is right. Brain not engaged. Bob On Mon, Dec 31, 2012 at 3:41 PM, Alan Bloom n...@sonic.net wrote: Matt, -174 dBm is the noise of a resistor at room temperature in a 1 Hz bandwidth. Alan N1AL On 12/31/2012 2:33 PM, Matt Zilmer wrote: Couple of questions on the N-gen: 1. Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500]schematic
“...I have noticed that the port-to-port isolation between the 3 antenna ports is rather poor...” I measured about 42dB isolation on 6M from port 1-2. And this stays pretty constant down to 15M and then gets better fast. I measured about 61dB isolation on 6M from port 1-3. This gets better very fast, going to 75dB on 10M. I use ports 1 and 3 for my two HF antennas (43ft vertical and 20/15/10M rotatable dipole), and put my 6M beam on port 2. [Elecraft] K3/100 into DX-CC antenna (HI-SWR)
Hi all, Just spent the day putting up a multi-band DX-CC (fan dipole, 80-10M) in an inverted V configuration. Unfortunately, I could not get the center mast extended beyond 20 feet, with one end up ~9 feet from ground, the other, ~5 feet from ground. I am seeing HI-SWR on all bands. Any suggestions on what might be the issue? I was able to get decent SWR with my old 20M monoband dipole, 30 feet up. I have heard that the DX-CC is sensitive to height above ground, and am concerned that 20 feet might be too low. On the other hand, I was hoping it will at least tune well on 20 M at that height, if not all the bands... Appreciate any ideas/suggestions. I don't have an ATU in my K3/100, and was hoping a multi-band fan-dipole like the DX-CC would work well without need for an ATU. 73, Jay (KD6AMA) __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 into DX-CC antenna (HI-SWR)
Hi Jay ! I suggest that you need to use ... borrow? ... some sort of an antenna analyzer such as an MFJ-259B and find the points on each band where the antenna -is- resonant. The resonant points on some bands will be quite narrow (80M), but I'd think you can adjust the lengths of the dipoles to make the antenna resonant on portions of the bands that are of interest. I have one here that I use for a general purpose receiving antenna for my K3's second receiver, so low SWR resonance isn't so important. Bear in mind that like all fan dipoles, there is considerable interaction between the elements and length adjustments on a given band will almost certainly impact the other bands. You're likely to chase your tail as you try to make it satisfactory on all bands it's supposed to cover. An antenna tuner will be almost mandatory. 73! Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 into DX-CC antenna (HI-SWR)
Yes. A horizontal, or semi-horizontal, antenna is sensitive to height above ground. You want to be about 1/2 wavelength up for optimum DX results. The way the radiation interacts with the earth provides additional gain - up to 6 dB - at those heights. Your inverted V configuration provides some vertical polarization that has a lower radiation angle, but it's not much. It will be effective for at least short skip down to about 1/4 wavelength above ground where the main lobe is straight up and will scatter off of the ionosphere. That's what many Hams today call a NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence System) antenna. At lower heights the main lobe continues to point straight up but with less and less strength as more of the RF is absorbed by the earth. What you've run into with the SWR is exactly why tuners are so popular. It's very difficult to get an antenna to show a low SWR, especially on several bands, without one. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jay Krishna Sent: Monday, December 31, 2012 6:34 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3/100 into DX-CC antenna (HI-SWR) Hi all, Just spent the day putting up a multi-band DX-CC (fan dipole, 80-10M) in an inverted V configuration. Re: [Elecraft] kx3 macbook air programs
fldigi is a good suggestion and RUMlog is a great suggestion, especially it you are chasing DX and also interested in using the built in FSK-D and PSK-D capabilities of the KX-3. For casual RTTY and PSK and dx'ing you may find that the combination of RUMlog and cocoaModem are hard to beat. One audio connection from the radio to the Macbook and you're good to go using the waterfall from cocoaModem integrated with RUMlog for transmit.
