Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power Supply

2013-06-13 Thread Fred Smith
I've never heard of a 1225 but have a 1223 and a 1235. I have both and they
have been running strong 27/7 for just about 7 years never a single problem.
But I do have proper voltage to run them also. QST did find them a best buy
and not long ago either I can attest to that also and no noise.

I seems like you must have some sort of problem on your end as I know a lot
of people with and no problems with them either. In fact I spoke to a dealer
and he told me they have the least amount of returns on them than any other
power supply in its class.

Have you opened the Sound Control Panel, selected "Recording Devices"
then selected the iMic, opened the Levels tab and made sure it was

Huh? iMic should be supported as USB Audio CODEC (the standard USB

That's what baffles me. The system appears to load the above driver,
but no audio gets through. Taking the device and plugging it into a

the device is not compatible with Vista so I suspect that it is not

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for Win7

2013-06-13 Thread Mark Petiford
Dick,

You are almost there.  It appears you got through steps 1 and 2, but you also
need to do steps 3, 4,and 5 below:

1. Right click on the speaker icon on the lower right of the screen and select
Playback Devices.
2. The Sound window will open.  Be sure the Playback tab is selected.  This is
where you can select the default device.  More on that below.
3. Right click on Speakers iMac USB Audio System and select Properties in the
dropdown menu.

4. The Speaker Properties window will open, select the Levels tab in that
window.
5. Be sure the Speakers slider is set to something greater than zero, and be
sure the little speaker icon is not muted.  You can leave this window open
while you try to play a file; however, be sure to click on OK once the volume
is set correctly.

Be sure you have the headphones plugged into the Out jack of the iMac.  Of
course, I never make mistakes like that. ;-)

If you are simply playing a file back, you must have the iMac selected as the
default device in the Sound window, item 2 above.  That tells your PC to send
the digital sound (music) to that device, unless you tell a specific program
otherwise.  You do not need for it to be the default device if you are setting
it up to work with a program such as FLDIGI.  You will tell that program to
send data to that device.  In fact, you probably don't want it to be the
default device so you can prevent Windows from sending your music, and every
other beep and blurp that Windows makes, out over the air!  That is one big
advantage of using a separate soundcard for digital modes.

Hope this helps.

Mark,

I have followed your instructions, and I agree with you
on all.

But I am at this point; I right click on the speaker
icon, then click on 'playback devices'. I have iMic selected as default device
under speakers.  When I play a music file, I see the level indicator at the
far right following the music volume, but no sound.  (My headset and
iMic work fine on my XP computer)  I wonder what I have
overlooked.

You may need to experiment with the volume slider vs. the MIC/Line switch in
the iMic. I usually keep it on Line, and the volume slider at about 50%. When
I turn the volume up to about 20 on the KX3, I get a good waterfall display.

enabled and the volume is turned up, it works great for either I/Q or as an
input to digital mode software (I use FLDIGI) input. Keep in mind that
sometimes, other software will change your settings, so you have to check
them
again if it suddenly seems to stop working. If you want to use its output as
an input to the MIC jack on the KX3, you will have to go thru a similar setup
  for the "iMic Speakers".

the best buys I have made. When I first got it, I too had problems setting it
up, but I was simply making it more complicated than it needed to be. I
really
think it is easier under Win7 than XP because everything can be selected
starting with a right click on the little speaker icon. It all starts there.
No reason to open volume controls and figure out which menu you need to use
  next.

[Elecraft] K3 MEMORY USE

2013-06-13 Thread Mike Greenway
I noticed when using my memories on the K3, the keying line to the amp drops in
between some words. Even if I hold the foot switch down it will not hold he
relay in. If I try to invoke the XMIT switch during the memory run that kicks
the memory our of run mode.Of course I could run CW speed at a higher rate
but sometimes it needs to be run slower. Any way to keep the amp keying line
invoked the whole time the memory is running? 73 Mike K4PI

[Elecraft] K3: anyone using Sennheiser HMD 280 Pro?

2013-06-13 Thread PAUL BRADBEER
I've used my HD 280 pro headphones (normally used on my hi-fi !) with my
K3, and very much prefer it to my Heil headset. I'm thinking of splashing
out for the headset version (HMD 280 Pro)but I have seen a number of
complaints about low audio output from the microphone. Is anyone using
this headset with a K3? Do they drive the mic input well enough? I think
I read that the K3 mic input will deal with just about anything but the HMD
280 Pro is pretty pricey, so I want to do some research first!

It was interesting to re-read the ARRL reviews of some of the switching

http://www.arrl.org/files/file/protected/Group/Members/ProductReview/pdf/pr0
001.pdf

The switchers were fairly RF-quiet at low current draw, and then created
more noise as they drew more current. This is fine for the usual
single-transmitter ham station, but could be an issue in so2r or multiop.

I use a single Astron RS-35A analog supply for so2r with two K3's. It works
great, and it is a fail-safe way to ensure that both K3's can not transmit
at the same time. The supply will simply groan and give up!

Astron linear supplies also have a simple (internal) voltage adjustment, so
you can pump the voltage up to 14.5 for reduced IMD.

I currently use an Astron RS-35M in my home shack. Yes it's big and hot but
it works well, puts out no RF hash and is easy to repair if something goes
wrong with it. I also have an MFJ-4125 switcher for backup that I've had
for years and it works great with no RF hash. It does have a noisy fan but
there are mods to fix that. I almost always wear headphones so the fan has
never bothered me. I tried a JetStream switcher from CheapHam last year but
it put S9+ out all over the HF bands so back it went! I also have a Pyramid
35 amp linear supply I use at our lake cabin but it has needed repair
several times so I would advise staying away from that brand.

Re: [Elecraft] YEEE HAA!

2013-06-13 Thread Lewis Phelps
As a former railroad company officer, I can tell you that UPS uses the nation's
rail system very heavily for piggyback (trailer on flat car, or TOFC) shipments
that are longer than one or two day's run in a truck. The "break-even" distance
(rail and truck costs equal) varies depending on fuel costs and specific
locale, but in general, if it's traveling more than 1,000 miles it will do most
of that journey by rail. The major railroads all run UPS-only trains, and they
have about the highest priority of any traffic on the line, equal priority for
use of the main line with Amtrak, and sometimes higher.

One thing to remember, is that unfortunately this option does NOT work if you are
using a footswitch (or a sequencer triggered by a footswitch). I still don't
understand why it can't be included in the firmware as an option even if you key the
TX with a footswitch, but that is the way it is. So, if that is they way you also
operate, you have to make a MACRO that will automatically change to operate split and
move the transmit frequency for you. I did this once, but it seemed to have
disappeared with a software update :-( GL and VY 73, Lance

Re: [Elecraft] USB Sound Card for Win7

2013-06-13 Thread Richard Fjeld
Thanks to those who answered my post about using iMic on Win7. First let me
say I tried all the things suggested with no luck. I never found anything
muted or disabled.

At first, nothing, then I could play sounds, but no music. It seemed that it
began working after I used Quickmix to load iMic. (Actually, it showed USB
audio device.)

**I noticed I now had a volume slider for Windows Media Player which I did not
have before. I now could play music. The slider can be seen by right clicking
the speaker icon, and then selecting 'open volume mixer'.

I had trouble using Quickmix on Win7 when I first tried it several months ago.
I wish I could remember what the fix was. (Maybe later.) Quickmix has been
working fine and is a handy utility.

Thanks for your help.

  Dick,

You are almost there. It appears you got through steps 1 and 2, but you also
need to do steps 3, 4,and 5 below:

  1. Right click on the speaker icon on the lower right of the screen and
select Playback Devices.
  2. The Sound window will open. Be sure the Playback tab is selected. This
is where you can select the default device.

  Mark

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies for K3

2013-06-13 Thread Richard Fjeld
People have mentioned the Astron SS-30A switcher. I have one and noticed when
the fan came on, I could hear a high pitched squeal in the audio. Also on Tx.

I read other reports of this. Some people put ferrites on the fan wires. If I
remember correctly, I re-heated the solder joints on the fan wires. Problem
solved. I like the supply because of it's small size and light weight. I use
it when portable.

2013-06-13 Thread Tom H Childers

Well you could pug the foot switch into the straight key jack, but if
you did, that would be sending QLF or QRF, wouldn't it? ;o)

When I first got licensed in 1976, the Oklahoma City Hamfest had a
contest called the QLF contest. They had a wooden straight key about
3 or 4 feet long connected to an oscillator on which participants
would send CW with their left foot. Having your shoe on was
optional.

2013-06-13 Thread Tom H Childers
The JB Hunt company is also a major user of rail to move freight.
I've often seen a mile of them on the rails.

I'd like to see more use of rail transportation by rail to cut down
on the number of overloaded 18 wheelers tearing up our roads. Here
in TX they have passed legislation allowing 100,000 lb loads of wheat
on the I-45 corridor to Houston. If it's legal to haul 100,000 lbs,
they will haul 150,000 lbs with 54 foot long trailers.

Sorry about the OT remarks ;o(

meter dipole (my own design, tunes from 3.5 to 4.0), 60 m dipole, 40 meter
tap off the boom of my beam, TH11DX beam and a 6m vertical (2m and 440 as
well).

Basically what I did was to build a remote antenna switch (from an April
2005 QST article) built from a FarCircuits.com kit (circuit board and
relays, ~$40) as the remote switch. I have a single coax coming the last 50
feet from the base of my tower up to the shack. This remote switch (grounds
the antennas when not in use) is driven by a circuit that I build using a
VERY old chip from my junk box, a 74154 BCD to decimal line output chip
(decodes the K3 Accessory Band outputs 0-3 to a 1 of 16 line output). I
also have a manual setting that allows me to switch the antennas with a
rotary switch - 1 to 6, so I can use it with my KX3 as well.

So, my question, I have tapped off the Accessory output lines on the back of
the K3 into the antenna controller to the 74154 chip. I have some .01 uf
capacitors for filtering the lines. But my question is, do I need any other
protection for the lines coming from the output of the K3 to my controller?
The outputs of the 74154 drive a set of 6 5 volt relays which drive the
lines (and LEDs) down to the remote antenna switch board.

The cable from the K3 Accessory plug to the controller is shielded and
grounded to the chassis. There are 6 lightning arrestors on each of the
coax inputs (copper strapped together and ground to the base of the tower).
The six control lines from the controller to the remote antenna switch are
also shielded and grounded (12 volts to drive the relays).

But am I missing anything in protecting the K3 lines to the controller?
I've checked the schematic of the K3 but can't find much on the outputs for
protection.

Incidentally, I do also have a KPA500 that is also connected to the system
Accessory output.

[Elecraft] Need a Fuse on the K3's Power Line?

2013-06-13 Thread PGrig
I was just looking at my new K3's (#7489) power cable, and see that it is not
protected by a fuse (although I think I saw an instruction to use an in-line
fuse if I connect it to battery power).

I see what looks like a 20a fuse (or breaker) on the back of my K3/100,
although I believe I read that it draws 25a continuous duty.

I was thinking of connecting my radio either directly to a 70a Astron p.s.
(which will also handle my 50w 2m mobile rig and a variety of other smaller
loads) or through a 25a fused receptacle on a RigRunner, itself connected to
the Astron.

To fuse or not to fuse--that is the question, and what is peoples' experience
with the RigRunner?

Yes, that is a circuit breaker on the K3 so a fuse probably is not
necessary. Of course there would certainly be nothing wrong with using

If you're running off battery, or other unprotected power-source, I
think you would really want an external fuse (as close to the power

Re: [Elecraft] Need a Fuse on the K3's Power Line?

2013-06-13 Thread Don Wilhelm

Paul,

An in-line fuse close to the power source is always a good safety
precaution.
You are protecting the wire against a fault as well as the equipment on
the far end of that wire.
A 12 gauge wire will safely handle 25 amps - but it will not safely
handle the full 70 amp output of your wower supply without vaporizing
and possibly spewing molten copper all over your hamshack, and can
present a fire possibility.

#10 wire can safely handle 40 amps, but again, not the full output of
your 70 am supply.

I encourage you to fuse near the power supply for the wire size that you
use for connections from that supply.

The rigrunner is a nice device allowing you to fuse the input for the
wire size that you have connected to the supply and also fuse the branch
circuits according to the needs of the devices being powered.

I fuse #12 wire at 25 amps and #16 at 10 amps. #18 gets a 5 amp fuse.

73,
Don W3FPR

Fuse it according to the wire size.

Re: [Elecraft] Power Supplies for K3

2013-06-13 Thread Josh Fiden
I have 2 of the SS-30M and have never seen this problem (fan noise).
They are very quiet whether the fan is running or not. I like the "M"
version with meters. They are powering 3 radios including the K-3 and 2
brick amps. I find it helpful to have the ammeters. For example, this
past weekend I had a feedline connector problem which resulted in the
brick dropping power output. It was immediately apparent via the ammeter
that there was a problem. The only issue I've had was a failed rocker
switch which was easily replaced since it snapped in and the wiring used
Faston terminals. The older one I've been running for 12 years now and
going strong!

solved. I like the supply because of it's small size and light weight. I use

[Elecraft] Need a Fuse on the K3's Power Line?

2013-06-13 Thread Jarmo Blomster
If you do not have fast fuses in 12V DC wire you may end up with loose and
broken PCB traces in RF board, also the connectors can be damaged.

I bought a used K3 #6913, the seller said that he had messed the polarity
with car battery. That caused a major circuit board problem in the trace
that lead to KPA3 in RF board. The seller had fixed the problem temporarily
but it really need better fixup to keep it working.

He hadn't put fuses in the DC wires as the manual suggest, maybe he just
trust the 20A circuit breaker of the KPA3. Obviously that is not adequate
protection. Maybe also Elecraft engineers can do something to the reverse
polarity protection to make it more robust, to my mind the protection is
not adequate if it results loose PCB tracks, eventough support so claims.
At least Elecraft should supply fast fuses in the 12V DC line to prevent
other damages, maybe a humble manual note is not enough.

Here is a picture of what is the result if you don't have the fuses in
place.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: anyone using Sennheiser HMD 280 Pro?

2013-06-13 Thread Wolf E. Rose
good morning,

since quite a long time I'm using the 'beyerdynamic DT234 pro' with my K3. It
sounds good RX and TX wise and is quite comfortable for my needs. They are not
cheap, but less expensive then the Sennheiser brand ones.

I was following the Yamaha threads on this reflector for a long time, but
didn't find a chance to buy one over here in Europe. I believe the Yamaha is
sold as 'Koss SB40' in this part of the world. Some comparing between both
brands made me believing that ... but I'm not sure about it. I bought one, used
it but put it aside as my spare one.

Anyhow, I own both now but stick with the beyerdynamic. The ear cushions (kind
of velvet like surface) are much more comfortable for me and my ears ;-) than
the leatherette like ones of the Koss. But YMMV.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: anyone using Sennheiser HMD 280 Pro?

2013-06-13 Thread Josh Fiden
I haven't used the Koss SB40, but looking at pictures online they are
not identical to Yamaha CM100. The ear cushions and the microphone look
different.
