[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report
Good Evening, Whew, 40 meters was noisy and copy was difficult. Even Brian was weak today at 559. The QSB was not helping matters on either band. But 20 m was much better than 40 m. It may be time to move the 40 meter net back to where it was at 0100z. I'll wait one more week and try it again at z. On 14050 kHz at 2200z: W0CZ - Ken - ND K4JPN - Steve - GA K6XK - Roy - IA AB9V - Mike - IN KB5RF - Tom - TX On 7045 kHz at z: K0DTJ - Brian - CA K4TO - Dave - KY Are the only two I am very sure of. KB5RF may have called but became ESP quickly. I don't think the other two were talking to me at all :) Oh well, that's how it goes. I heard K4TO on the initial call up but not once again after that. Happy Easter to all, 73, Kevin. Did you pull the rubber cover off the knob? There’s a hex screw under there. It may have loosened enough for the knob to slip up on the shaft far enough to be free wheeling. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 s/n 56
You might try removing the USB connector, Restart, check the device manager, if a device isn't linked, remove it , then plug in the USB. If that doesn't connect, remove it again, and then sort through the comports in the utility and if that doesn't work, you may have different problem. I suspect your issue is within your PC not the amp. Let me know. 73, Bill K9YEQ -Original Message- From: Ed GillilandSent: Sunday, April 1, 2018 5:45 PM To: Bill Johnson ; Dick Dievendorff Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 s/n 56 Hi Bill, Thanks for the reply. Note the one item I have as failed. If you find the same on your machine, simply quick uninstall, then go to the top tool bar and click on action and scan for hardware changes. The snippet tool won't let me copy to point it out to you. See if that doesn't do it. So, to summarize, Device manager, click on the Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right click on marked USB devices marked with a fault indicator and then uninstall each of them, then go up to menu and then scan for changes. That should do it. Of course, you have to select the correct port when using the utility, and try each one to be sure you have the correct port! 72 & 73, Bill K9YEQ FT’er for K2, KX1, KX3, KXPA100, KAT500, W2, etc. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.netOn Behalf Of Ed Gilliland Sent: Sunday, April 1, 2018 5:09 PM To: Dick Dievendorff Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 s/n 56 I replaced the USB cable with a known good cable, no help. Ed: Also spend some time with the TX EQ settings on your K3. I had the help of a couple friends who know my voice very well. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 s/n 56
Thanks Dick, That's the first thing I did Dick but nothing on the Windows Device Manager changes and there is no notification sound that you usually get when unplugging/plugging a device into a USB port. I wonder if the USB port in the KPA-1500 is dead. I reinstalled the FTDI driver, no help. I uninstalled/reinstalled the KPA-1500 Utility, no help. The KPA-1500 Manual under Troubleshooting suggests the Windows Device Manager, unplugging/plugging the USB cable method to locate the proper com port. I've run out of talent...hi! I'll send a note to Elecraft Support. [Elecraft] K2 Shuts Down Immediately after Turning Power Switch On
I hooked up my K2 this morning and everything seemed to be working fine. I have the K2/10 with the KAT2 in one box. I built the KAT100 and KPA100 in the EC2 enclosure. With the K2/10 connected to the KPA100/KAT100, I hooked up an antenna and initiated a TUNE on 40 meters. It started tuning and in the middle of the tune, everything shut down as if I had turned the power swtich off. I tuned the power switch off and back on again and now it will only power up for about a second and immediately shut down again. I disconnected the K2 from the KPA/KAT box and with nothing connected but power to the K2/10 it still does the same thing. I disassembled it and checked Q7 and Q8 which do not appear to be shorted. The collector voltage on both initially reads 10.8 volts at power up until it shuts down and then drops to about 0.8 volts. The base voltage on both of them is at about 0.55 volts. Where should I go from here? [Elecraft] power varying - KPA1500
When running the KPA1500 at full power, sometimes the power will fluctuate. EXAMPLE: I was checking in to the Elecraft SSB net a little while ago. While transmitting, the power dropped to around 400W. This has happened on 20M CW as well. I wonder if the K3S output is dropping. (??). If I run at 500W or so, no problem. [Elecraft] AA and AAA NiMH Battery Charging
There are chargers available which will do a controlled current re-charge and let you match the battery voltages. They are not cheap and not found at your local electronics emporium. As I recall, I paid about $55.00 for mine. I have one from a small German factory; it has an LCD for each battery and gives various useful info about each battery. It does give up on some but saves a lot of others. For me it was worthwhile; there are lot of AA and AAA batteries in our household besides Ham Gear (GPS Receiver, High powered camera flash, grandkid's toys, telephones, LED flashlights, etc.). For all day 100w operationat a rare mountaintop 6M grid that is in deep shade and requires a 3 mile hike up a 1,000 ft trail, several of us have bought 20Ah batteries, cost about $200 and weighs 5.5#. Much smaller packs are available. A 3 Ah pack costs $50 and weighs 13 oz. Re: [Elecraft] Who's On First?
Yes, according to the Release notes (hfwnotes.rtf): *MCU 5.33 / DSP 2.86 / FPF 1.23, 8-3-2015* * PTT/KEY USE WITH THE USB PORT IMPROVED: PC applications can activate PTT and KEY at the K3S via the USB port's RTS/DTR signals. However, initial setup of the rig's USB port by the PC may cause pulsed or continuous activation of the transmitter. This can happen if the computer is turned on after the K3S, or if the USB cable is not connected. There is now a "Safe" mode (the default) which disables PTT-KEY transmit until the K3S receives a command via USB, such as a read of the rig's VFO frequency. To turn on safe mode on/off, go into CONFIG:PTT-KEY and tap '1' to select "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE". Exit the menu and turn the K3S off/on. Applications that use PTT-KEY via USB but never send commands may require "UNSAFE" mode. In this case, unwanted transmit can be avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S. * CANCELLING UNEXPECTED PTT-KEY ACTIVATION: If an external source (usually a PC) activates PTT or KEY unexpectedly, you can cancel transmit by tapping the XMIT switch. This will show ERR KEY or ERR PTT on VFO B. Once the PTT or KEY source as been removed, transmit will be re-enabled. If the cause may be unneeded PTT-KEY activation via the USB port, go into the CONFIG:PTT-KEY menu entry and set the parameter to OFF-OFF. However, if use an FTDI USB-to-Serial adapter on Windows with other Elecraft radios or devices, the FTDI drivers provide an easy way to disable the search for a serial mouse or legacy analog modem on the serial port, and this prevents unwanted RTS/DTR "key down" activation at boot time. This works with recent KUSB adapters or homebrew external CW or FSK keying circuits on virtual serial ports that may be connected to your radio (K3, K3S, KX2, KX3, etc.). 1. Open the Windows *Device Manager* (shortcut: Windows Key + R (run): devmgmt.msc) 2. Expand *Ports* 3. *Right click* on the virtual COM port defined by the FTDI USB-to-Serial Adapter 4. Click *Properties* 5. Select the *Port Settings* tab 6. Click the *Advanced...* button 7. Under *Miscellaneous Options*: 1. Uncheck *Serial Enumerator* (default is checked) 2. Check *Disable Modem Control at Startup* (default is unchecked). This should be the only option in the list that should be checked. 8. Click *OK* to close the Advanced Settings dialog 9. Click *OK* again to close the Serial Port Properties dialog As far as I know, only FTDI's USB-to-Serial drivers provide options to disable this legacy behavior on Windows that causes RTS/DTR to be activated at boot time. 73, Bob, N6TV On Thu, Mar 29, 2018 at 5:11 PM, Don Wilhelmwrote: > Bill, > > If you have updated the K3 firmware in the last few months, it does not > make any difference whether the K3 or the computer is turned on first. > The K3 now has a SAFE mode that disables DTR and RTS until it receives > some command like polling for frequency, mode, etc. from your software > application. > > You can go into the K3 CONFIG menu for KEY-PTT and turn it to unsafe if > you have devices that monitor the RS-232 bus and do not issue any commands > (SteppIR controllers for one instance). > > Look at the firmware release notes for the past 3 months. > BTW, the firmware release notes should be considered an addition to your > K3/K3S manual. [Elecraft] The new KX19
Announcing Elecraft’s super secret KX19 with Time Displacement Circuitry (patent pending). If you want to run a multi-multi single op station simply time jump repeatedly into the contest period from any other time during the year (or century for that matter). Run stations for two hours and then rest in another time. It will keep you fresh for those 500 Q/hr runs. Since you will be well rested you can rack up extraordinary scores. The standard liquid nitrogen cooling system is able to dissipate the waste heat from the 25 Petawatt fusion reactor under normal use. Liquid helium cooling systems are available on special order. Antigravity mods let you take the KX19 on camping trips, ocean cruises, or even pedestrian mobile. The additional 5 Petawatt power source for the antigravity modules necessitates the liquid helium cooling module. Call Elecraft today for a quote. /Time displacement of 1957 ionospheric conditions is frowned upon by most reputable contesters. Modifying the fusion reactor voids Elecraft’s warranty. It may eliminate small sections of the continent too. Alterations to the time displacement circuitry also voids the warranty and may permanently place the user in another time stream. Each use of the KX19 envelops the operator in their own pocket universe to minimize the time paradox problem. Avoid having more than two KX19 transceivers operating in close proximity. There is a slight danger of forming a black hole when there are three running in one room. If you experience a gravitational anomaly evacuate immediately and wait for a few hours before returning. The micro black hole will have evaporated by then./ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] "Bat Err" on KX3 - follow-up
Several replies suggested I check the voltage of the NiMH batteries as a first step. Did so this morning, with an interesting result. Of the eight (all are 2700 mAh Powerex NiMH 1.2 v nominal), the mean voltage was less than a half volt (0.45 VDC); the median and mode were each less than one tenth of a volt (0.06 VDC.) The best of them was only 1.23 and 5 of them were at 0.06 VDC or a bit less. So much for advertised shelf life. Seems that the KX3 draws some trickle current even when turned off. It might be they could be resuscitated with another charger, but Don Wilhelm wisely cautions against it. With this deep a discharge, the charging current could be excessive without having a constant-current lab-type charger, which I don’t have. Best to just replace the whole bunch. Of course I would learn this on Easter morning, when there are none for sale anywhere nearby. If replacing all eight doesn’t fix the error message I’ll post again with another plea for ideas. Re: [Elecraft] Migrating a KPA3 POWER module to a K3S
> Then at some point, you just need a K3S. Not quite: you would also need a new KPAIO3A interface board - and even then, it would only be a partial upgrade. My very early K3S/10 was probably the first to undergo a comprehensive 'module migration' in the wild (5000 miles away from the factory). Elecraft's support was exemplary - as ever - but we discovered that the older KPAIO3 does not function correctly with the K3S mainboard. It does not correctly control the relays and the fans, so it fails the PAIO TST procedures. When the KPAIO3 is replaced by a KPAIO3A, then the KPA3 does become compatible with the K3S and will function much the same as it did in the K3. But migrating a KPA3 into a K3S can only ever be an *incomplete* upgrade. As Joe has already pointed out, it does not include many of the other improvements that Elecraft made in this area of the K3S - not only the increased number of power pins but also the KPA3A itself, which is a completely new design using power MOSFETs. So even though it is possible to migrate a KPA3 into a K3S, the result can never be a true K3S/100. Therefore it isn't surprising that Elecraft does not recommend this procedure, and does not offer it as part of the factory migration service. 73 from Ian GM3SEK >From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft- >boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of hawley, charles j jr >Sent: 31 March 2018 21:22 >To: Joe Subich, W4TV >Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net >Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Migrating a KPA3 POWER module to a K3S > >Thanks.
