Re: [Elecraft] Reliable PL-259 UHF connector engagement

2020-07-29 Thread Bill Hammond via Elecraft
Hi George, I was over program services in Dallas back in the 1970’s for
Southwestern Bell. We provided the last mile for radio and TV remote
operations. I spent more than a little time handing off our end. We also
provided studio to transmitter links.

I saw that tool in use at just about all the outlets.

Good times!! I just lost my feed from CBS, help??

Re: [Elecraft] K3 output power spikes

2016-03-01 Thread Bill Hammond via Elecraft
Hi John,
My power dances all over the place (my serial number is 00069). Just had a
quick QSO with the KPA500 indicating 560 watts at the beginning and then going
down to 480 at the end. That is typical. My 12 volt supply drops to 12.2 on
transmit, 13.3 on receive. I have a long 12 volt cable from the supply so
“I" squared losses are understandable in the cable. Driving power from the K3
is variable per band but typically set to 25 watts or so. The QSO described
above was on 17 Meters and the drive is 25 watts there for ~500 watts out or
just below after stabilization.

I remember the power fluctuation issue being discussed years ago on this
reflector and it was explained that the power control uses a sampling and
feedback loop that takes “time” to stabilize. That said, I believe we are both
experiencing some power fluctuation over 10% in a short period of time.
Depending on the amplifiers we are using this could cause real downstream
issues, like distorted signals, spurs or alarm faulting of smart amplifiers.

Could we have some aging component that is aggravating this issue? Our K3’s
are among the oldest on the air.

Re: [Elecraft] K3EXREF Ext. Frequency Reference Input

2015-12-20 Thread Bill Hammond via Elecraft
No experience with that model but much information is available on line. I
bought the BG7TBL version and a distribution amplifier. The Lady Heather
software said it was accurate over several days to the 12th power...way beyond
what I need. I use the output for my HP frequency counter and the K3. Way
beyond what we need but fun to play with. If it doesn’t come with a antenna
understand that the antenna has a powered LNA and will need power over the feed
line, provided in the model I purchased. These eBay versions vary due to the
fact that they use salvaged parts so depending when it is manufactured it will
have a different OCXO for GPS RX installed. Since accuracy is way beyond what
I need (I don’t run a calibration lab). Fun stuff...Homework assignments is
the GPS frequency traceable to the NBS. :)

Re: [Elecraft] QSK and the K3

2015-07-16 Thread Bill Hammond via Elecraft
I’m wondering what tests Electaft is suggesting? Remember the QSK (right side
of band-switch) has two settings Full and Simi. Also in the Config menu CW QRQ
= ON, seems to help, gives you the + sign on the right bottom of the display.
My serial number 00069 seems to work as good as ever with 5.29 installed.

[Elecraft] P3 forgets set ranges in Fixed Track mode (WARC)

2014-03-15 Thread Bill Hammond
As a CW operator, I keep the P3 in fixed track mode covering the lower 50 Khz
of each band. From time to time the P3 forgets the setting on the 17 and 12
meter bands only. I'm wondering if i am the only person that has experienced
this issue. I can't pinpoint exactly how this happens but I am usually
operating on 10 meters when I change bands and discover 12 and 17 have had the
fixed track frequency I set disappear.

I have never complained before as the reset has been infrequent. Now, with 10
open, I find this problem occurs daily, sometimes two or three times a day.
Not an earth shattering problem as the P3 works fine and I change the setting
back, just an irritant. I'm wondering if it is just my station or have others
experienced this, remedy anyone?

Re: [Elecraft] Application to capture SVGA screen (P3) info in a file format?

2014-01-23 Thread Bill Hammond
Hi Jim,
Expanding a bit on Joe's and Jim's response, the utility saves the images as
.PNG if you want perhaps a .JPG image view the image in your computers preview
software and then "save as" what file format you want. For example the Apple
will view the .PNG images from the P3 utility and let you save it as .TIFF,
.PDF or .JPG. If you have a version of Photoshop it will allow you to save the
image in a mind blowing number of formats and various versions of those formats.

Hope this helps,

Bill-AK5X

[Elecraft] Remote K3/0 and 2WIRE 3801HGV modem/firewall

2014-01-18 Thread Bill Hammond
Hi, anyone out there successful in punching holes in the 2WIRE firewall for
Remote operation?

The user interface for browser access seems to me to be lacking. Does anyone
have the secret sauce?? The browser interface also wants the application type
from a pull down menu.

What are the two 11000, 12000 protocols? The 5060 is SIP.

Here is what is needed:
There are 3 ports in total that absolutely need to be forwarded.
I will provide the details below.
12000 (UDP)
11000 (UDP)
5060 (TCP) & (UDP)

Thanks in advance for any information.

73,
Bill

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Buying CM500 in NYC

2013-12-11 Thread Bill Hammond
Hi Stew,
Even if you decide not to buy the CS500, B&H is a great place to visit. It is
a tourist attraction in its own right. If you are a little interested in
Photography B&H has the greatest collection of photographic equipment I have
ever seen.
Here is a movie (Ad) on B&H:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmN6pBEfSIQ

There are other NYC area stores too, Adorama for example. I have no interest
except a satisfied customer of both photo gear and headsets from Adorama and
B&H.

I have two CS500's and they are great at half the Illinois manufactures price
(sorry to say). To my ears they are more comfortable too, to me that is their
appeal.

[Elecraft] OT P3 video of RFI, ideas?

2013-07-05 Thread Bill Hammond
This is a bit off topic but perhaps other P3 users on this reflector have
encountered this RFI and have some idea where it comes from and perhaps a
remedy? There must be a couple of thousand P3 users on this reflector.
The below is a recording and includes sound of this nasty bit of pulsating RF.

Video recording:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/9214448105/

It is not always there. When it is there in the 20-meter band there are
siblings almost as strong at the following frequencies:

13.975

14.032-the recording

14.126

14.220

14.282

14.469

In addition, there are less strong signals that follow the pulsation; one is
visible on the recording at 14000 (far left on the P3). They are also in the 17
meter band. They are not in the 15 meter band or above.

I have pulled the big switch and it is still there on battery power. My
suspension is a neighbor with plasma television. Is this what plasma TV looks
like? It is directional in nature and the strongest signal comes from a
40-degree heading, roughly Europe from my location, or to a cluster of homes to
my northeast.

If you have the computer interface up (KPA Utility), you can switch it on or

You may be able to write a macro on the K3 to do the same thing, haven't tried

I was able to access this URL this morning. He does do an excellent job of
describing the signals complete with recordings. I believe the signal I
recorded is a QAM signal or phase shift keying. If he returns this morning
1450Z or so I'll record the audio. I do not believe it is CODAR. More ears
would be useful :)

Re: [Elecraft] OT-P3 capture of a 17M intruder

2013-01-14 Thread Bill Hammond
Hi Ken,
I have sent the following to the contact listed for Intruder watch on ARRL's
web site. Thanks for the advise.

Bill
AK5X

Hi Chuck,
Attached is a link to a spectral display from my P3 band scope I made this
morning around 1430Z. I made the picture before the signal moved into our 17
meter band as explained in the caption and notation of the picture.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/8380898512/in/photostream

There is some speculation that this is a signal from these guys:

http://www.codar.com/index.htm

I have no way of knowing that, but the signal was indeed from the west coast
according to my HF beam. My reading of part 97.303 gives amateurs primary
service of the 17 meter band. It looks like a intrusion to me.

Have you seen this before or do you know of CODAR?

Bill

Re: [Elecraft] OT-P3 capture of a 17M intruder

2013-01-14 Thread Bill Hammond
Hi Bill,
I think you may of hit the nail on the head with CODAR. I had to Google it
with the following results:

http://www.codar.com/intro_hf_radar.shtml

I guess it is for ocean wave detection (Tsunami)? They have some radar
locations in Southern California.

My reading of Part 97.301 and 97.303 shows us as primary service of the 17
meter allocation, meaning:

Each frequency band allocated to
the amateur service is designated as either a secondary service or a
primary service. A station in a secondary service must not cause
harmful interference to, and must accept interference from, stations in
   a primary service.

Other thoughts?

Click on the setup button on the screen and click on "always on top", then
follow instructions, that will remove that option and allow you to move it on

[Elecraft] KPA500 faults on first dit at times

2012-12-27 Thread Bill Hammond
Seasons Greetings Ellecrafters,

"KPA500 faults on first dit at times"

It doesn't happen all the time and I can't pin down the sequence of events when
it happens, the last time was after a band QSY after clicking on a spot in my
logging software. I am wondering if others have had issue or have solved the
problem. The fault on the KPA500 is too much drive. I have the drive adjusted
per band and none above 32 watts. It resets quickly and all is well after the
initial fault. It usually happens once or twice a day.

After bringing the amplifier back on line, all is well. It just scares me when
it happens :)

[Elecraft] Link to photos of KAT500 build

2012-12-06 Thread Bill Hammond
As we have all come to expect from Elecraft, the KPA went together like a clock
in a couple of hours. It worked great as soon as I applied power.
I was not missing one single washer in the parts kit. My hat is off to
Crisalyn who put the majority of parts together in the misc. bag.

The K-Line is on the air. :) Now, if we can convince Elecraft to make a
rotator controller, Collins made a few for the S-Line, I believe I can have a
complete Elecraft shack.

2012-12-05 Thread Bill Hammond
Wait until you get the chance to take it into the wilderness where the nearest
power line is 20 miles away. The noise floor really is the noise floor of the
radio and a wire in the nearest tree is like a stacked array. The thrills have
never gone away in this great hobby.

[Elecraft] KPA500 anomaly?

2012-05-31 Thread Bill Hammond
I had the entire K-Line on and needed to reload the P3 software. I shut down
the K3 and reloaded the P3 software. It takes a while. During the reload the
fans came on on the KPA500 and then cycled off several times. Apparently there
was some interaction between the K3 powered off and the KPA500. Not a problem
as the fix is to turn off the KPA500 too. I just thought it was odd. :)

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA reset and frame freeze, anyone else?

2012-05-18 Thread Bill Hammond
I have been experiencing frequent display resets and frame freezing on my P3
with SVGA adapter. I am running the latest firmware (1.16) loaded with the new
utility. Have I just got a bad example or are others experiencing these
issues? It all started with the addition of the SVGA option.
The PS screen does a momentary flash and the SVGA screen looses all the
waterfall. The freeze stops the curser on the P3 for a few seconds while I
change frequency with the main (A) VFO. The curser eventually catches up with
a jump. It is a bit unnerving in the latest pile-ups for Yemen and Somalia.

Re: [Elecraft] high-power tuner

2012-02-24 Thread Bill Hammond

Hi Ian,
Many of us are in that boat. I don't believe the KTA500 is vaperware. I'm
just cooling my heals for the reason you cited, unreliable products from the
competition. I want good products and great support from people that care
about their customers. That is worth the wait, even if it is until the end of
the year. Heck the K3 tuner will load a hairpin, I would expect the KTA500
will as well. If I just couldn't wait any longer ,I think I would find a
manual tuner to hold me over (one that had a good resale value). :)

Re: [Elecraft] Tracking down S9+ noise on 40M

2012-01-19 Thread Bill Hammond
My biggie was the dishwasher...documented here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/6595335923/in/photostream
Electronic motor control seems to be the latest QRN maker, or would Plasma TV's
win that award?...My noise was from DC to Daylight all bands S9. The P3 was
very handy in tracking this down.

With a AM radio the buzz will get louder the closer you are to the offending
device. BC radios usually have some null points off the end of the ferrite BC
antennas giving you some directivity. There are some tips in the ARRL RFI
3rd edition that are helpful, as well as the AC Power Interference Handbook by
Loftness, KB7KK. These are good reference books to have. A quick glance at
"The Handbook" index did not show RFI as a covered subject, but I may of missed
it.

Powering down the house is helpful but not if the offending device is on
batteries :)

Re: [Elecraft] dual-input monitors...

2012-01-15 Thread Bill Hammond

I am sure there are as many cleaver ways to display the new P3 VGA output. I
plan on using an existing monitor and switching inputs too.

I have 22" light weight LG E2241(street price less than $150 USD) with front
panel selectable input switching. It has DVI, VGA and HDMI inputs.
It has the standard four mounting holes on the back. CAUTION, not all monitors
have those holes and if you intend on using an elevated monitor mount, those
holes are a must. I might add that the LED monitors are about half the weight
of previous technology. When using elevated mounting, less weight is desired.
This monitor weighs less than six pounds.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 as a RFI/QRN tracking device

2011-12-30 Thread Bill Hammond
Good guess Vic,
I finally ran this down to the electronic dish washer. It has a two hour wash
cycle it is a Bosch model SHX68P05UC/58.

http://www.bosch-home.com/us/SHX68P05UC.html

It uses some pulsing to control motor functions. As pointed out by Alan (N1AL)
they must use pulse control with a duration of 1/ 10,000 sec to create a signal
with 10KHZ nulls. Alan also pointed out that a hash filter may be needed and
suggested K9YC's very informative web site for hash control:
http://www.audiosystemsgroup.com/K9YC/K9YC.htm.

The point of the post was to mention how useful the P3 is for running down
these annoying intruders in our spectrum and to solicit others experiences.
The P3 has become much more of a tool for me than I ever expected, far
exceeding explications. With more improvements and VGA output on the way I
see an even greater use for the P3 as test gear as well as an operating aid.
As an operating aid, I think I notice shifting operating methods in DX pile-ups
because of it as well.

[Elecraft] P3 as a RFI/QRN tracking device

2011-12-29 Thread Bill Hammond
In the below link please find a screen shot (Flickr) of the P3 display as well
as a hint as to what it is. I was never able to run down the noise before I
got the P3. I wonder if others have used the P3 to chase down interference?

I haven't named the offending device as a brain tickle :)

Re: [Elecraft] Edgeport 4-port serial adapter...

2011-09-28 Thread Bill Hammond

I Have a Dell XPS-8300 (i7-2600 3.4 GHz, 64-bit OS) with Windows 7. The
expansion ports are the PCI-Express variety. I use the below Best Connectivity
six port product. It has worked flawlessly for me. I have one port connected
to the W2 wattmeter and a second port connected to the KPA500 for system
monitoring. If you do a quick search for serial port adapters there are many
choices.

Fred, I love your K3 manual. Nice job. It is my K3 reference manual.

I use a Mac for logging and K3 control (McLoggerDX). Although using two
platforms, it works very well for me. A picture here:

Re: [Elecraft] Regarding Heathkit

2011-09-09 Thread Bill Hammond
I was a young USAF Radio repairman returning from South East Asia making $350 a
month in 1968. The only radio I could afford was a HW100 @ $240 +$49 for a AC
supply. Nothing else was even close in price. Say what you may, I have
nothing but praise for the Heath kits. By the way still have a Heath keyer,
coaxial switch and VTVM that work some 45 years on.

Take a trip down memory lane here:

Many of you may fine the link attached interesting as it is the origin of our

Re: [Elecraft] T1

2011-02-13 Thread Bill Hammond
Pawlu,
I believe the software is all contained in the MCU, U1 MCU,16F876A and loaded
at Altos. I took mine apart and it is marked T1 1.07. I assume that is the
software designation. I have looked at the Elecraft pages concerning the T1
and can find no reference to software changes. If there are later versions
there is no reference. Unless you have PIC programming experience and the
proper programming jig, you may have issues loading new code. Perhaps a note to
Elecraft service could clear up this question?
Cheers,
Bill

[Elecraft] P3 # 817 gets a new front panel

2010-12-19 Thread Bill Hammond
Last week I received an email that Elecraft was shipping me a new front panel
for my P3 because they had discovered a problem with the button hole size
height. on some panels The instructions indicated that before replacing the
panel measure the old panel to be sure a replacement was needed. I measured see
photo below, mine is off so now I will replace my front panel. The correct hole
height is .23"h mine is .280"h. (.050" too high).

So I am repairing a problem I didn't know I had because of quality control at
Elecraft (at no cost). Just find someone else that would do that...I am an
Elecraft fan for life...

Here is the measurement (note I measured the opening in the new panel as .223"
and that is what is set on the digital caliper instrument.:

[Elecraft] OT what the heck is this?

2010-10-23 Thread Bill Hammond

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/?saved=1

It has been there for years, but isn't really a problem until someone happens
to be on that frequency and you want to talk to them. Like this morning when
FO8RZ was working up 1 from 28.002 and with the receiver set on 28.003 I had
the pleasure of listening to this repetitive tone until I worked him :)

So what the heck is it?? Obviously local, it is always there and never misses
a beat. I have pulled the big switch and listening with a battery powered rig,
it is still there. I assume some consumer product uses 10 meters for some
unknown purpose...ever encounter this Elecrafters?

[Elecraft] K3 DSP change out

2010-02-21 Thread Bill Hammond
I replaced the K3 DSP board yesterday. So far, I am delighted with the new
noise level. I have always been a bit disappointed in the old noise
level/quality preferring the K2 receiver in the noise department.

The replacement DSP card came with no instructions. if you replace yours, I
suggest that you download the "KRX3 Installation manual" . The first 15 or so
pages will get you where you need to be. I also added the KXV3A board to my K3
just in case I can't live without the P3 when it arrives. :)

I took a few pictures of the operation available here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ak5x/

You are welcome to look at all of the photographs but the first ten shots deal
with the replacement including a short video of the test after installation.

Now, off to the mail with the old DSP card.

Re: [Elecraft] OT Local QRN what is it? UPDATE!

2010-01-19 Thread Bill Hammond
Thank you Elecraft reflector members for all of the great suggestions on this
QRN problem.. With your help I was able to locate the problem. I would of
not found it without your help.

Now, I have no idea what to do about the issue, perhaps nothing. I now know
the source.

It's my neighbors treadmill. We share a power transformer (underground
utilities). Although I bet the noise is from a motor arching and most likely
is radiating at the motor as opposed to being carried on the power line. I
have hope as he is not a ultra marathon runner and his runs rarely cause a QRT
of over an hour.

If you want to hear the sound click on the Flickr link:

[Elecraft] OT Local QRN what is it?

2010-01-16 Thread Bill Hammond
I have been chasing this noise in my urban neighborhood for several years now.
It usually visits during the daylight hours and stays for several hours. It has
a rhythm and is across all frequencies and bands. I have pulled the big switch
in my house and the noise is still with me (listening on battery powered rigs).
Neighbors on all sides of my city sized lot have swimming pools and my first
suspicion is noise generated by circulation pumps.

Here are two recordings (on a K3 of coarse). Why not ask the most
discriminating radio fans in the world their opinions on the source?

Usually a quick Google search will return several choices. Search for
"2N substitution". I tried it and got several choices. You can
usually search for the exact device and get the entire specification
to compair.

If you want to see what all the knob fuss is about, I have posted a

Even with cracked knobs my radio works fine you really need to look

Elecraft has addressed the issue admirably as they do with any issue
