[Elecraft] For Sale: Elecraft K2/100

2022-10-28 Thread David Inger
I have for sale a very nice K2 (100 watt version). I am the second owner. The
radio received a full check out and alignment by Dave Van Wallaghen W8FGU. I
also had Dave add the fixed audio output board and rear panel jack. This
option provide a much more stable audio signal for digital modes such as FT-8,
etc. This is a great compact and solid performing radio. It is also in
excellent physical condition.

The radio includes the following Elecraft options:

• KSB2 SSB adapter (wired for Kenwood/Elecraft mics)
• KNB2 Noise Blanker
• K160RX 160-meter and receive antenna port
• KIOS2 RS-232 interface board with USB adapter cable
• Power cable with Anderson PowerPoles on each end

I also have all of the assembly/operation manuals for radio and options. The
price for the K2 is $900.00 firm plus $25 shipping. I also have available a
Signalink USB digital interface with all required cables for digital mode
operations. I will sell this package for an additional $50 to the buyer of the
radio. Payment by USPS Money Order, Zelle or personal check pending bank
clearance. Pictures will be available to interested buyers.

2022-10-27 Thread David Inger
I have for sale my K2 (100-watt version). I am the second owner. In 2020, I

provides a more stable audio output for use with digital modes such as FT-8.
This is a great, compact and solid performing radio. It is also in excellent

[Elecraft] For Sale - "K-line" Covers

2022-08-24 Thread David Inger
Recently I sold my K3 and P3 to partially fund my new K4. I have set of barely
used covers that are in excellent (dare I say new?) condition. The way I ended
up arranging my equipment there was very little need to cover the various
pieces.

The covers were made by Pat Osborne, KI4RFT. They are made very high quality
felt-backed black vinyl. Each cover is embroidered in gold with "ELECRAFT" and
the equipment model. The four covers are for the:

* K3
* P3
* KAT500
* KPA500

I want to sell them as a set, rather than messing around with multiple
shipments. $50.00 will get you the complete set including shipping. Please
no PayPal. I will accept USPS M.O., personal check, Venmo or Zelle. Or, if
you are in the vicinity of Santa Barbara, CA you are welcome to pick them up.

I've decided it's time to get serious about saving money for a K4 purchase in
the not-to-distant future. My KX-3 (S/N 62**) gets very little use, so it's
time to let it get. The radio has only been used a few times outside for
backyard or picnic table "dxpeditions."

This is a fully loaded radio with all options (except for the 2-meter module),
It includes:

* KXFL3 - dual bandpass roofing filter
* KXAT3 - automatic tuner
* KXBC - charger (with realtime clock) for internal NIMH batteries
* MH3 - hand mic
* KX3-PCKT - accessory cable package
* KXSER - radio-to-computer USB cable
* Pro Audio Engineering KX31 heatsink
* Nifty Mini-Manual for the KX3
* Fred Katy's book - "The Elecraft KX-Line."
* The Elecraft KX3 Owners Manual

I think 60% of the original price is fair for this pristine radio. $1200 plus
Priority Mail shipping ($21.90) to any US ZIP Code.

I will be happy to send pictures to anyone seriously interested in the
purchase, if you can put up with my primitive photography skills.

[Elecraft] For Sale: Phonema KSP3 Speakers for the K-Line

2019-05-29 Thread David Inger
Full Disclosure: I've put my money down on a K4, so I am now in the "cash
recovery" mode.

I have a pair of the Phonema speakers designed specially for the K3/K3S. As
you may know, the Phonemas were the first "aftermarket" speakers for the
K-Line. These Spanish-made speakers both look and sound great. They match
the proflie of the K3 and produce great audio. My pair is in both excellent
physicall and operation condition. Phonema speakers are currently available
from DX Engineering for $190 each. I will sell the pair for a total price
of $180 plus shipping. The excellent audio of these speakers is a real
treat. Please contact me directly (off list) at ingerassocia...@cox.net.

After much hand-wringing, I've decided to sell my 100-W K2. The radio is in
excellent condition, both operationally and cosmetically. I sent it back to
Don Wilhelm last summer for a "tune-up" and alignment. Don's report stated
that the radio met or exceeded factory specs (documentation provided to new
owner).

The serial number is 31XX, so it is a Rev "B" version which meets current
production. I am the second owner and I installed most options, including
the 100-watt module. The radio includes:
KNB2 - Noise Blanker board
KSB2 - SSB board
KIOS2 - Serial Interface (with radio-to-computer cable)
KAF2 - Audio Filter and Realtime Clock
Kenwood MC-43S hand mic
All construction and operators manuals.

I love this radio, but I have to let go of some things. After all these
years, the performance of the K2 is still top shelf; if I can hear it / work
it on my K3, I can do it on my K2.

My firm price for the all of the above is $650 including Priority Mail
shipping to any US ZIP code. If you are anywhere near Santa Barbara, CA, I
would be happy to demo the radio.

I do have pictures and, yes, I take PayPal.

While cleaning out some drawers, I found a nice cover for the W2. I sold

[Elecraft] KX3 Scanning - Dunce Cap is On

2016-10-29 Thread David Inger
Thanks to those responding to my message, particularly Harry Mayer and Don
Wilhelm. I simply misread (misunderstood) the Digital Modes section and
thought I needed to set the mode to PSK D even when I was using a soundcard
input/output and software, rather than using the KX3's display for received
text and a paddle for transmit. When I corrected this, all worked fine. I
needed to back off on my "speed reading" (meaning low comprehension)
techniques!

[Elecraft] KX3 Unwanted Scanning

2016-10-29 Thread David Inger
I decided to get my new (to me) KX3 going on psk31. I ordered the proper
cables from Elecraft. Plugged the cables into the KX3 ("red" cable go to the
Phones jack; "green" cable goes to the Mic jack). Put the radio in data
mode ("PSK D" selected). The radio begins to scan, and will not stop until
I unplug the green cable going to the Mic jack). I tried this set up with
two different external soundcards and well as the one internal to the Sony
laptop; no joy. I also tried different digital software programs to see if
that was the problem; still no joy.

I checked the archives and did find a mention to this problem in 2015 but no
definitive answer. I am sure I am overlooking the obviously. I will be
happy to put on my dunce cap, once someone can point me in the right
direction.

[Elecraft] In Praise of the K2

2016-09-02 Thread David Inger
I have a 12-13 year old K2/100 that doesn't get use much any more except at
occasional vacation rentals. I keep thinking it's time to sell it. In
June, I sent it to Don Wilhelm to "tweak and peak" it. It came back from
Don with a new alignment and a clean bill of health.

Right now I have my K3 in pieces to do various upgrades, i.e., more filters
and several "K3s upgrades." So the K2 is back in line plugged into my
KPA-500 and KAT500 tuner.

What a great little radio the K2 is! Sounds great, adequate filtering, and
drives the KPA500 to full power with about 20-watts from the K2. I know
there have been tons of technical improvements found in radios such as the
K3 series and the KX3 (not to mention some other brands), but it is amazing
how competent the K2 is. There is no way it can be considered obsolete. I
think it going to stay in my shack for a lot longer!

[Elecraft] For Sale: Elecraft K2/100

2016-01-05 Thread David Inger
I am selling my K2/100 (SN 31XX). I am not the original builder. Since
this K2 has a post-3000 serial number, it has the current REV B main board.
All factory recommended mods and updates have been made as well to bring it
up to current Elecraft specs. The radio includes these upgrade modules:

*   KPA100 (integrated 100-w RF deck)
*   KAT2 (20-w ATU)
*   KSB2 (SSB module)
* KAF2 (audio filter and clock)
*   KNB2 (noise blanker)
*   KIO2 (RS-232 interface)

The factory VFO knob has been replaced with an OEM Yaesu knob that
incorporated a finger dimple and a rubber outer ring. The package also
includes the power cable with Anderson PowerPoles on both ends, all manuals
and upgrades notes. I will also include a nice Kenwood MC-43S hand mic, and
the K2-to-PC interface cable.

This radio is in very good physical condition, and operates well in all
modes. Frequency readout is spot on after a 5-minute warmup. I have photos
available to interested parties. Price is $775 + shipping.

[Elecraft] K2 Question: Is the DSP Board a Worthwhile upgrade?

2015-11-04 Thread David Inger
A friend has a fairly recent K2 with the KAF2 audio filter option. He asked
me to remove the KAF2, build the KDSP2 board and install it in his K2. This
got me to thinking: I also have a K2 wiht the KAF2 installed. My friend
works mainly SSB; I work main CW and digital modes. Is the DSP board a
significant improvement over the bare K2 or even with the KAF2 installed
(which seems to be tailored for CW reception)? In general, radios that I
have owned with AF DSP have been pretty much a disappointment. So is the
KDSP2 a worthwhile and cost-effective upgrade?

[Elecraft] K3 Power Output Issue after Firmware Update

2015-02-28 Thread David Inger
I just updated the K3 firmware to 5.10 since I am about to order the new
synth board. When I restarted the radio after the upload, the following
problem occurred:

When I press the TUNE button, the radio shows about 8 watts of power.
If I turn the power control up, the display defaults back to 8 watts.
In the config menu I have the tune power set to 20 watts.

I reloaded the firmware to make sure there wasn't a glitch in the
loading. The same problem still occurs.
The only other troubleshooting I did was to change the TX ALC (in the
config menu) to "OFF" When I tune up with the TX ALC off, I can get
full power out from the radio, so I assume that I do not have a
component failure problem.

Has anyone experienced this or know of any settings which I may have
inadvertently changed?

[Elecraft] Remoting A KAT500

2014-09-13 Thread David Inger
This topic may have been covered before, but I can't find it specifically in
the archives. I am thinking of remoting my KAT500 ATU and using it at the
base of a non-resonant vertical. My ideal is to install the tuner in a NEMA
raintight box and powering with dc sent down the coax with bias-T's at both
ends. I will have to rely on RF sensing since it would impractical to use
control cables for the 60 ft run.

Any thoughts?

[Elecraft] KAT500 TUNER WOES

2014-05-19 Thread David Inger
I have a fairly early KAT500 tuner (#275). I am using it to tune several
antennas. Recently it has stopped finding acceptable matches to a
ladderline-fed 110 ft. dipole. This problem is only on 40-meters. The SWR
anywhere in that band is around 8:1. The tuner works great on all other
bands (well, not so much on 160, but that's the antenna's problem). I also
have a 43-ft vertical and the tuner matches fine on that antenna. I
replaced all intervening coax jumpers and even the 1:1 current balun at the
transition of the ladderline to the coax in the shack. None of the above
help.

Interestingly, when I bypass the KAT500 and enable the internal tuner in the
K3, everything works fine, including matching 40-meters. I have also done a
reset using the KAT500 utility program; still no help.

Before, I tear into things or stop bothering the good people at Elecraft, I
wonder if any in the group has any suggestions.

[Elecraft] Triggering KPA500 from 2 Radios

2014-05-02 Thread David Inger
I have been using my K3/KPA500 setup for quite sometime. I am using the
standard cable between the K3 ACC port and the KPA500 AUX for communications
between the radio and the amp. This has worked perfectly from the
beginning. At some time in the past, I wanted to use my Yaesu MKV Field to
excite the amp. I connected both radios tho the KPA500 through a 2-position
coax switch. I also connect a cable from the MKV to the KPA PA. KEY jack.
When I switched the amp from standby to operate, there was a huge
attenuation of the MKV's received signal. When I unplugged the K3-KPA AUX
cable the problem went away. The received signal level was fine and the amp
produced +/-500 watts with about 40 watts of drive from the MKV. An earlier
message on the reflector indicated that this signal attenuation with the AUX
cable connected was likely due to voltage signals on the AUX lines. I
remove the MKV from the system and forgot about.

Well, I've rearranged my operating desk and would like to use the MKV a
little; I sure do like operating "the old monster"! Next to the K3 it is
the best radio I have had on the desk. So, back to the amp issue. Has
anyone connected two radios--one being a K3 using the AUX cable--to the
KPA500, without having to plug/unplug cables to get everything to play
nicely?

[Elecraft] Using the KPA500 with the K3 & Yaesu MKV Field

2013-11-04 Thread David Inger
I have been using the KPA500 with my K3 with the AUX cable. Everything has
worked fine since Day One. Yesterday, I hooked up a newly acquired MP MKV
Field to the KPA with a cable from the PA Key jack on the KPA500 to the "TX
GND" jack on the MKV. I switch between the rigs using a coax switch into
the amp. Using either RF sensing or manual bandswitching, I have no
problems generating 500 watts with about 45 watts drive from the MKV.

The problem is when the MKV is in receive mode. As long as the amp is in
the Standby position, everything is fine. As soon as the amp is switched to
the Operate position, there is major attenuation of the receive signal; I
mean like from S9 to S1. I solved the problem by temporarily unplugging the
AUX cable from the KPA500; receive is now normal in either the Standby or
Operate mode. This works but it is inconvenient. I cannot seem to find a
menu setting or some other means to allow by rigs to be connected to the amp
while leaving the K3-to-KPA500 AUX cable connected.

Any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Transformer Hum

2013-06-11 Thread David Inger
I was also noticing transformer hum. I checked the mounting hardware and
found that the transformer was secure. I plug my amp into a 20-amp nominal
120-v circuit. When the transformer continued to hum, I checked the voltage
at the wall receptacle. The voltage would, intermittantly dip to less than
105-v and lower. It was under this low voltage excursions that the
transformer hum occurred. It my case, it turned out the culprit was a
faulty circuit breaker at the service panel. Replacing the breaker solved
the problem. I would recommend checking the input voltage when you hear the
hum.

[Elecraft] N4PY Rig Control Software with K2/K3

2013-05-25 Thread David Inger

I noticed on Carl N4PY's website that his rig control software allows a K2
to act as a sub-receiver for the K3. The K2 functions through VFO B on the

[Elecraft] K2 Amp Key Kit by N0SS

2012-07-25 Thread David Inger
Does anyone have a spare K2 amp keying kit that was produced by Tom N0SS
(SK)? It's little "fixes" like this that reminds me of how much Tom offered
us and how his presence is missed.

There is of course a homebrew version available on Elecraft website, but the
N0SS kit was based on a neat little circuit board. If I breadboard it
myself, it will probably be a "chop job."

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] N3FJP rig control settings?

2012-06-04 Thread David Inger
Hi Jim,

I have been using ACLog for about 2 years now. I find it simple, easy to
use, and without a lot of complex features that are of no value...to me. I
am a DX'er and an extremely casual contester (for the DX value). ACLog
reports K3's band and exact frequency; which is all I really want it to do
for logging purposes. I don't use it to control a rotator (since my wire
antennas and vertical don't need rotators!) and I don't use it to report DX
spots; I use the standalone DX cluster program DX Summit for that. I also
find the program easy to use for my LoTW uploads.

I have tried several other logging programs such as logger32, Ham Radio
Deluxe (which I use for general rig control and digimodes), DX Keeper, etc.
I find them all too bloated with features I have no use for, and which
require a learning curve that I don't have the time for. One good thing
about ACLog (which is true of many logging programs) is that it will export
your log in ADIF format. If you chose to switch to another logger, it is
relatively painless to export from ACLog and import into your new logger of
choice.

These are my experiences for what it's worth.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Woes -- Problem Solved!!

2012-06-03 Thread David Inger
I recently sent a message to the group regarding the fact that my K3 would
shut off at power levels over +/-50 watts. I tried two different power
supplies, made up new power cables and even reset the radio. The problem
remained. Several group members offered suggestions, some of which I had
already tried, and some of which I hadn't. I was ready to sent the radio
back to Elecraft for service, since I am going on vacation in about a week
(poor me; I am being "forced" to go to Hawaii for two weeks) and don't
really have time to dig into the radio.

On a whim, I borrowed a power supply from a friend (a Powerwerx SS-30DV);
problem solved! With a little troubleshootting, it was quite apparent that
there was output voltage regulation problems with both of my two supplies.
One was about 5 years old; the other about two.

I never would have assumed that both supplies would have "gone south" at the
same time; so much for assumptions! I like this outcome rather than have to
send the radio in for servicing. Alls well that ends well...

Thanks to Adrian VK4TUX, I checked the display voltage. I was able to coax
the power level up to about 50-watts, at which time the display indicated
+/-9.2-volts; I'm sure this is low enough to shut off the K3. With the same
power supply and cabling and antennas, I am able to run my FT-857D at 100-w,
so I don't think it is the external supply setup that is causing the
problem. I guess it is time for a e-mail to Watsonville.

[Elecraft] K3 Woes: Radio Shuts Off at Power Levels >20 Watts

2012-05-30 Thread David Inger
My beloved K3 is giving me fits. It was recently returned from Elecraft
service for some 8v regulator capacitor replacements. This was done in
April. I have been operating the K3 on just a few occasions since then.
Last night when attempting to tune up, the radio would shut down if the
power output was set higher than about 20 watts. At lower power levels the
radio would tune. SWR on two different antennas was <1.2:1. The display
also showed significant dimming even at low power tune up attempts.

I have done a factory reset per the manual and reset the parameters in the
Config menu. I have done the reset twice.

I have switched out external power supplies (from a Samlex 1223 to a
Powerwerx SS-30DV). I have fabricated a new power supply cable from the
supply to the radio; still no joy.

Before contacting Elecraft service, I would appreciate any suggestions of
something (obvious) I may have overlooked.

[Elecraft] For Sale: K-Line Cover Set

2012-04-14 Thread David Inger
I have for sale a cover set for the K3, P3 and KPA500. These covers are
made by Pat of PYI Radio Covers and are some of the best covers made. They
are vinyl with a felt-like inner lining. The covers are basic black with no
logos, names, callsign, etc. The K3 cover has a cut out for the front mic
jack. The covers are as-new and from a tobacco-free home. I want to sell
them as a set. $50.00 shipped. Please contact me "off list" at

[Elecraft] Orange Screen of Death

2012-03-26 Thread David Inger
Today, while very casually operating WPX looking for new DXCC countries, my
K3 went deaf and dumb. I had just switched bands and push the "Tune" button
to adjust my antenna tuner. The radio started emitting a series of high
pitched beeps (obviously the transmit output for tuning). I could not get
it out of the Tune mode. I had to push the power button to turn the radio
off. When I turned the radio back on, the LED's on the knobs next to the
VFO cycled on for a second, then went off; the display was totally blank
except for the orange background color. No controls functioned and there
was absolutely no audio output. I could not turn the radio off except by
turning off the external power supply. I tried to restart the radio several
times with no success. I let the K3 cool down for an hour to see if it was
heat related; no luck.

Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas what might be happening?
In the meantime I am getting my shipping boxes readied for a trip to Dr.
Elecraft.

[Elecraft] Simple Approach to Multiple Comports?

hopefully low cost) virtual comports on my laptop to connect the single K3

Re: [Elecraft] AGC Weird Behavior

2011-09-19 Thread David Inger
Thanks to everyone who responded to me directly or on the reflector. There
was a consensus that the AGC problem is related to using Ham Radio Deluxe.
I have a relatively early K3 (#565) have used HRD since I have had the
radio. However, I only just started using the HRD Logger program; this
coincides with the AGC problem. So, it is possible that certain HRD modules
(such as the basic interface and DM780) may not be the cause of the AGC shut
off but, due to excessive polling, the problem can occur when other modules
are enabled.

I don't really want to abandon HRD and particularly the DM780 module, but I
can't have it messing with my radio!

Again, thanks for all the help.

[Elecraft] Weird AGC Behavior

2011-09-19 Thread David Inger
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

 I am using a K3 (FW version 4.39; DSP version 2.73) with a KPA500 amp
connected to the K3 with the Elecraft AUX cable.

I normally have the AGC set for AGC-S when operating SSB or digital modes.
If the K3 is in receive mode for several minutes, the AGC turns itself off
without warning (accompanied by a hugh volume increase from the speaker).
While this doesn't happen every time, it has happened several times. It
seems to be most likely to happen if the Noise Blanker is turned on and the
KPA500 amp is on and ready for operation (as opposed to being in standby
mode).

When I installed my KPA500, I upgraded the K3's firmware to the above
versions. I have no idea what is causing the AGC to turn itself off, or if
it has anything to do with the firmware upgrade, the amp, or both, or
neither.

I would appreciate any help that exorcises this demon.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Cabling Qustion

2011-06-20 Thread David Inger
In anticipation of receiving my KPA500 kit (July?), I had one question
regarding cabling. If the AUX cable is used, does that eliminate the need
for PA KEY cable. I assume it does since pins 10 & 12 of the AUX connector
provide PTT. I would appreciate a clarification?

[Elecraft] For Sale: MH-2 Hand Mic

2011-06-12 Thread David Inger
Recently, I purchased this mic via a want ad on this reflector. Unfortunately,
the seller did not think it was necessary to disclose that the mic had been
exposed (an understatement) to tobacco smoke, and I, thoughtlessly, did not
ask.

Upon receipt I scrubbed it inside and out with rubbing alcohol, which
eliminated most of the smell. It is almost all gone but you can still detect a
trace, if you sniff hard enough. If this does not bother you, I will sell the
mic for $26 including Priority Mail shipping. Other than the trace of tobacco
smell, the mic is in excellent operational and cosmetic condition. Please
contact me off-reflector at ingerassocia...@verizon.net.

[Elecraft] P3 Frequency Display: My Mind is on Vacation

2011-04-13 Thread David Inger
I just got around to updating the firmware from 1.00 to 1.05 on my P3.
Unless I am dreaming, in 1.00 I was able to see upper and lower frequencies
(as well as center freq) displayed, not just the span range. With the new
firmware, I can't seem to get the actual frequencies displayed. The manual
and a quick archive search did not seem to present the answer. Was I
dreaming that the freqs were dispalyed? If not could someone please remind
me what menu item can be toggled?

[Elecraft] Elecraft at the Santa Barbara Hamfest: Wow! Wow! Wow!

2010-08-15 Thread David Inger
Eric and Dale were at our local hamfest in Santa Barbara on Saturday with a
really fantastic display. The star of the show: The KPA-500 amp. It is
amazing. When my friend and I first saw it we thought is was a minature Alpha
87. What an absolutely beautiful product! I assumed it had a switching power
supply, but Eric informed me that it was a linear supply, with a total amp
weight of about 25 lbs., all in the form factor of the K3. It makes a THP amp
look too big!

There were a couple of P3's on display as well. I have mixed feelings of the
usefulness (to me) of a panadapter; I may or may not buy one. But that amp!
If I could pre-order one today I would. And for those of you who don't have an
Elecraft transceiver, the KPA-500 will work with whatever you have. By the
way, if I understood Eric correctly, the amp have full output even on 6 meters.

[Elecraft] RJ-45 "Mystery" Connector (FP ACC)

Page 13 of the K3 Owner's Manual states that the FP ACC is " (RJ-45, 6 pins)

It is used with accessory devices."

I may have missed earlier discussions, but has there been any additional
