[Elecraft] New K4 and Log4OMV2

2022-02-27 Thread Bill Ham
I haven’t been able to get my K4 to work with Log4OMV2 (v.2.20.0.0) I had a K3
before and all worked together.

In addition to the K4, I have a Flex 6500, both setup with Omnirig, Radio 1
(Flex) settings are Smart SDR, Com12, 38400, 8, None, 2, high, high, 500, 4000.

Radio 2 (K4) settings are Elecraft K3, Com5, 38400, 8, None, 2, high, high,
500, 4000. All com ports settings match with Windows. Log4OMV2 does not see
the K4, but works with Flex. The K4 USB B cable shows Com Port 5 and 6. I have
tried both ports in Omni rig.

In Log4OMV2 Settings/Program Configurations/Hardware config/Hardware
Configuration/CAT Interface/Settings, I have Omnirig for the CAT Engine.

I use PstRotatorAZ with GHE Wireless Base to control my antenna switch. In
PstRotatorAZ/Communications/GHE Setup and Omnirig sees both radios, reads the
frequency and works with the K4 on COM5 or COM6.

I tried using hamlib on Log4OMv2 (after stopping omnrig) but I couldn’t select
any of the hamlib parameters for the rig, port, etc.

I’ve run out of ideas. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tnx & 73,
Bill - K0KO

[Elecraft] Multi-Device mouse and keyboard

2022-02-22 Thread Bill Ham
I am trying to get a Logitech K780 keyboard and M585 to work with a Win 10 PC
and my new 0594 K4. I can only get the Mouse to work on both if I use one
Unifying RCVR/Dongle in the K4 and another in the PC. The Mouse will toggle
between the devices. I can get the Kybd working on either the PC or the K4,
but not both.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] DATA-A tx freq offset with digital modes

2016-09-22 Thread Ian - Ham
Graham,

DATA-A mode is typically used for PSK-31 and some other digital modes. Try
using CW mode for CW and see if that doesn’t help resolve the issue.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Elecraft] DATA-A tx freq offset with digital modes

Hi,

I’m very new to Elecraft and K3S so hope this is not too obvious….

I have a K3S connected to my PC with audio tones coming in via MIC IN (in
reality the K3S is the remote end of a K3-Twin remote setup).

When I use DATA-A sub mode for CW, the transmission is 600Hz higher than the
VFO frequency. I assume this is because DATA-A transmits on the USB and the VFO
shows the suppressed carrier frequency?

I want my CW signal to match the VFO, how can I do that?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on the KDVR3. Looks like I'll be placing
an order with the gang in Aptos soon! I might even start upgrading those
parts of my old K3 that can be upgraded to K3S standard!

So, Eric, does that mean that, if I purchase a KDVR3, and it doesn't provide

Actually, the correct name for the DVR option on the K3 and K3S is, drum
roll..
'KDVR3' (not K3DVR) .

As noted by several other KDVR3 users, if the recording audio starts
immediately after pressing the button to start recording, and ended
immediately after the audio stops by pressing the button, there should be no
delay on playback.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Looking for feedback on K3DVR

2016-07-21 Thread Ian - Ham
Gary,

The delay I referred to originally is not between message cycles. It referred
to the following: Press M1 to play CQ message -> Wait 1 second -> Message
finally plays -> Wait another second -> DVR releases transmit so you can hear
answering stations on receive.

I apologize if my original request caused confusion.

Thanks and 73,

OK. I'll admit to being confused. If there is no delay (Press and HOLD M! if
that is where I placed my voice recording) why would you NOT want a delay,
which is adjustable?

If there is no delay, how do I answer your call?you will be transmitting
again so will not hear me?

When contesting, I set my time between Play-receive-play at 4 seconds to allow
me to hear somebody calling me. Am I missing something here?

Maybe this explains some stations not allowing enough delay or receive time
between calls so that i can't get my call out quick enough for them to hear me
before they transmit again.

Just curious.

To me the KDVR3 is essential for me, had it since day one 8 years ago.

[Elecraft] [K3] Looking for feedback on K3DVR

2016-07-20 Thread Ian - Ham
All,

After competing somewhat competitively in the Georgia QSO Party the last few
years, and participating as one of the hunted 13 Colonies special event
stations in Georgia for the last couple of years, I find myself ready to add
a voice keyer to my shack set up. To that end, and in order to minimize desk
clutter, I'm looking at the KDVR3 for my K3 s/n 281 as a possible solution.
However, I've heard anecdotal evidence from hams in my area who have the
KDVR3 that it probably isn't the best solution for a voice keyer because it
has long (>1 sec) delays before both beginning transmission of the recorded
message and dropping transmit at the end of the message. Before I drop $150
on a component that might not be the solution I'm looking for, I would love
to get others' opinions and feedback on their experiences using the KDVR3 as
a voice keyer.

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Sound Cards

2016-07-10 Thread Ian - Ham
Bill,

Make sure WriteLog is using the u2R as the sound card device, and not
whatever the default sound card is for your system. Sometimes, when you make
other changes to your system, it can return all sound card settings to the
default on-board sound card. Over 22 years in IT has taught me to check all
settings, even ones that should be persistent.

This may be the wrong place for this question, but...

My K3's, I have two, are connected to my computer sound cards, (I have two)
via the K3 line out to the sound card line in. After taking the computer and
the K3's to Field Day and running different software than I normally do,
they no longer work. When I try to set them up for RTTY (I use Writelog), I
set the sound card levels. That level setting lasts for about
10 seconds and then it goes to zero. Something is changing the setting. It
happens on both sound cards. Each sound card is connected to a different
radio.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium with a microHam u2R.

Anybody have any idea what may be happening?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] : logging/k3s control program

2016-06-05 Thread Ian - Ham
I'm late jumping into this discussion, but want to add my two cents' worth.
In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a beta tester and evangelist for Ham
Radio Deluxe, but have no financial interest.

HRD provides all the functionality everyone has mentioned on this list
(including the info Ed asked for below, for V/UHF logging). In addition to
rig control, logging (which provides at-a-glance worked/confirmed info in
the cluster window), and digi modes, HRD also provides satellite tracking
and rotor control, all in one suite of tools. Awards tracking is superb.
And, HRD allows the use of MariaDB (a variant of MySQL) as the log database,
instead of just using Access (Access is the default data store, but it can
be converted very easily, following the video on HRD's YouTube channel). One
new feature that HRD has that I haven't heard about in any other logger is
the ability to take input from N1MM Logger+ directly as it is being input
into the contest logger. There are a couple of configuration items in HRD to
set, and the HRD logger must be running in the background during the
contest. This eliminates the step of exporting the contest log to an ADIF
and then importing it into HRD. I admit my bias, but feel HRD is well worth
the license fee and is among the best all-in-one suites available.

Barely dare ask, but is there a logging program suited for VHF logging? My
logs are simply excel spreadsheets and cover:
No. MO/DY/YR TIME CALLSIGN GRID LOCATION DXCC WAS FREQ MODE QSL-RX QSL-SENT
Last two columns track QSLs received "X" or sent "MO/DA/YR"

Especially would be nice to determine with callsign entry if I had worked
the station, previously. MY log is an initial contact log and I do not
enter repeat contacts. Present use is all manual entry and search. Grid is
six digit locator. e.g. on 2m-eme I have 438 initial contacts (distinct
callsigns).

So far I run contests on paper with pencil. Eme and VHF contests normally
are not so fast and furious as on HF.
But a log that saves frequency, mode and date info while one enters time and
call would be nice on contests, especially if it would detect a dupe. Be
most handy tallying score and entering contest log. Cabrillo conversion
would be nice for contests.

I keep separate logs by band (only logging 6m+ contacts)

Re: [Elecraft] OT Looking for PC advice.

2016-05-23 Thread Ian - Ham
Deni,

I upgraded all supported computers (I have one Dell laptop which is not
supported for Windows 10) in my home to Windows 10 months ago, and that
includes my shack computer. As an IT consultant, I have to stay on top of
changes Microsoft makes. I have had no issues with any of the ham radio
software I run on my shack computer. All are running fine under Windows 10.
I run all the relevant Elecraft utilities for my K-line, KAT500, and KPA500;
N1MM Logger+; VE7CC spotter; HRD; and probably a couple of other
applications I'm forgetting. In fact, I am a beta tester and evangelist for
HRD and was just with their team in Dayton. HRD is developed under Windows
10 and was being demoed on Windows 10 computers at Dayton, so if you have
issues with that application, you should open a ticket with them. My
apologies to any who are offended by the slightly off-topic diversion there.

The short answer, Deni, is you should not have any issues with the major
amateur radio applications under Windows 10.

Hi, I have an Elecraft K line station and up to now have been running all my
software on an aging Win 7 32 bit machine. No real problems but I'm in the
process of building an updated PC and have a dilemma. Do I go with Win
7 Pro 64 Bit or Win 10 for the OS?

I know some of you will have taken this path already, so how do you find WIN
10 with typical Ham radio software? I run Win4K3, N1MM, HRD, Log4OM, CW
Skimmer, NaP3 and numerous other Ham radio stuff.

I have Win 10 on my laptop (free update from Win 7) but not used for the Ham

unfamiliarity.

Do you guys prefer Win 7 or 10 for Ham radio apps.

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

[Elecraft] OT: 2016 Georgia QSO Party This Weekend

2016-04-04 Thread Ian - Ham
All,

The 2016 Georgia QSO Party takes place this weekend, April 9 and 10, on your
nearest HF band! The contest runs 2 10-hour shifts, 18:00 UTC April 9 -
03:59 UTC April 10 and 14:00 April 10 - 23:59 April 10. At some point during
these windows, all 159 Georgia counties will be activated. If you are a
county hunter needing Georgia counties or looking for Georgia for that
initial contact or band/mode fill for Worked All States, this weekend is the
perfect opportunity to nab those needed QSOs. This is one of the most
popular QSO parties of the contesting year, and there is much participation
from the Georgia end of the QSO.

Please join me as I activate Fulton County from my home shack in Roswell,
GA. I will be active all 20 hours of the contest, on all bands, working
phone only. I would love to work you and give you the state, Fulton County,
or a band/mode fill. More information can be found at
http://www.georgiaqsoparty.org.

Thank you and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Best Place to Sell Equipment?

2016-02-26 Thread Ian - Ham
Jose,

You could try selling your goods through your local ham club. Also, there
are Yahoo! groups for many of the different Yaesu radio models. You could
try joining one and sell through that avenue.

If you're on Facebook, there is also a group there called "Amateur Radio
Buy/Sell/Trade." You could try that as another option.

As with all options, please beware of scam artists.

Good luck!

I use HRD on Windows 10 and have not noticed any slowdowns. Could the drive

I just put a Win 10 drive on my computer from about six weeks ago and it
initiates in about six seconds. On the current Win 10 drive, it takes about
25 seconds. The only difference between the drives is that the slower drive
is current with updates. This makes me think there is something wrong with
an update.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Sure wish HRD worked on Linux!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 #281 Perceived Output Issue

2016-02-24 Thread Ian - Ham
Jerry,

Thanks for the response. I'm curious, however, why removing the 100W PA and
running calibration tests at 10W would matter, if I'm already seeing
expected results at the 10W power level. That is, I set the output power on
my K3 to 10W, and transmit using a full duty cycle mode. On the external
power meter, I see 10W, on all bands. This would seem to me to indicate that
there isn't an issue with the low power amplifier.

Thank you.

Remove hundred watt PA. Install a 10 W jumper. Run through the 10 W
calibration. Measure record and share the results.

It is logical to expect that this is where the issue is starting.

I stared playing with my Raspberry Pi running Noobs Debian and FLDigi. I
have to say I'm very surprised and impressed at how well it works. I'm in
the process of buying the newer/faster version and a metal shielded case.
The Plan is to mount the RASPI case inside a rugged enclosure having a +12v
DC to DC converter to +5V AND my +12v powersupply mounted. The idea is to
have something I can take mobile.
The only downside is the cost. For around $200 I could have a laptop that is
faster + does more but also weighs more and has more RFI.
The Pi with a used thrift store monitor, keyboard, mouse, I'm right at $100
without the DC-DC converter (running an AC linear converter aka Wall wart).

I need to think about it some more. The end goal is something around 30w
mobile without spending a fortune. The Raspberry Pi has been impressive so
far.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft web site

2015-12-30 Thread Ian - Ham
I successfully loaded the Elecraft web site from multiple devices in my QTH.
Likeliest cause of problems some places, but not others, is a DNS update
that hasn't fully replicated to all upstream DNS provider servers. When a
change is made, it can take up to 24 hours, and sometimes 36-48 hours,
before the change fully replicates throughout the global DNS infrastructure.
Give time, and see if you still have issues tomorrow.

Re: [Elecraft] [T1] T1 autocoupler with low power transceiver

2015-12-25 Thread Ian - Ham
Steve/All,

The Omnia-SDR web site currently shows the Peaberry v2 kit as sold out, for
both the full kit and semi-kit versions. I didn't see any information on
when they plan to restock.

Merry Christmas to all!

The SoftRock radios are indeed inexpensive and interesting, and can be used
for WSPR and similar.

A better choice, however, could well be the Peaberry V2 replacement, soon to
be available again from Omnia SDR. See the URL:

http://www.omnia-sdr.com/index.php?main_page=index=65

This radio covers up to 4 bands instead of just two, costs only slightly
more than the Ensemble TXRX, is the same form factor as the Ensemble,
requires no sound card, is compatible with all SoftRock Si570 control
software, and, it directly connects to and commands the Elecraft T1 tuner.

Another poster made a comment regarding the possible incorrect choice of the
Elecraft T1 autocoupler for a particular application. One might instead
consider that the T1 is an ideal choice, and then select a radio that works
better as an integrated-system element.

Re: [Elecraft] Stereo Speaker for K3

2015-11-22 Thread Ian - Ham
Ronnie,

Please don't let the few bad eggs in this group color your opinion of this
entire group. We've all asked questions here which were repeats of questions
asked, answered, and the responses archived. I find the archives for this
group to be sometimes a bit overwhelming and cumbersome to work with. It is
possible to miss something that is in there. Most of the members of this
group will simply either ignore the fact the question has been asked and
answered, or answer the question, and then point out that you can also
search the archive for previous questions/responses. And you will NEVER get
a mean-spirited or nasty response from any of the Elecraft employees who
monitor this list. I know I sound like a Kool-Aid drinker (I prefer to think
I go head-first into the punchbowl, myself :-) ), but Eric and Wayne have
gone out of their way to hire staff who are not only very knowledgeable in
their particular areas, but who strive to help us poor users make sure we
have the best experience possible, regardless of which piece of Elecraft
gear we own.

Keep posting those questions, and they'll keep getting answered properly.

PJ,

PowerPoint (or its open source equivalent) should allow you to print a
"handout-style" document that puts 4-6 slides on a page. That could at least
allow for a starting point, as you research and obtain more information.

Yesterday, Jim K9YC posted a link to a .pdf file dealing with shack grounding.
It is obviously a slide presentation suitable for a group lecture. Is there a
more "printer friendly" copy of that information? I like to print out and study
things of that sort on paper and the slide style precludes doing that easily.

A QRP SSB 10 watts on my K2 SN 40.

On my 160 mtr loop I will hear most of you and the 20 mtr beam is there to

Since the K2 has the capability to listen on the loop and xmit on the beam,

probably work most and with relays the rest.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - High Power?

2015-09-03 Thread Ian - Ham
David, it would depend on your context. For typical, day-to-day operations, I
would say anything over 200 watts is high power. Most contests recognize high
power as anything over 150 watts. If you are a QRPer, anything over 5/10 watts
(CW/SSB) is considered high power.

Personally, if I have my KPA500 on and am using it, I consider myself running
at high power, even if I'm only getting 300-350 watts out.

What do you regard as “high power?” Is our beloved KPA500 at 500 watts a high

[Elecraft] Weekly Elecraft SSB Net

2015-08-14 Thread Ian - Ham
All,

This week's Elecraft SSB net meets this Sunday, 16 August, at 1800 UTC on
14.3035 +/-. I should be net control from just north of Atlanta, GA. I'm
travelling this weekend, but fully expect to be back home Sunday for the
net. If, for some strange reason, I don't make it home, someone else please
just grab the reigns and run the net.

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Rig Insurance

2015-08-07 Thread Ian - Ham
Yes, they offer true replacement cost. There is a $50 deductible on claims.
If you're replacing a high-end rig (like a K3/K3S), you're going to come out
very well.

I'm relieved to hear that!

I had heard some rumor that the ARRL insurance wasn't that great, but I
understand that they changed carriers.

Do they offer a true replacement cost for items?
That's what it says on my homeowner's policy, but after filing a claim I
noticed that they had depreciated some items.

I'm wondering with such a large investment in gear if anyone has special
insurance just for their station? I'm pretty OCD about disconnecting my
station when not in use (major pain) and actually had my coax arch connector
arc over recently (I keep rubber covers over the connectors when not
connected) when a storm was near and there was a lightning hit up the road.

It would be a real shame to invest in a lifetime rig and lose it to
something silly like a storm/fire..etc.

Just wondering what folks do and their experiences protecting their
investments.

Re: [Elecraft] I wonder how many folks have had buyers remorse on a K3/K3S purchase?

2015-08-03 Thread Ian - Ham
Jerry,

I don't regret for one minute any of my Elecraft purchases. I bought my
K3/P3 used several years ago, then added the KAT500 and KPA500 later as
resources allowed. I also had a W2 wattmeter for several years, which I sold
after it became extraneous to my needs. I also use the T1 QRP tuner with my
FT-817 when I operate portable.

I've been very happy with all the Elecraft gear I own.

Just asking. It's a lot of money but appears to be a lot of radio. It's not

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Control Op

2015-08-01 Thread Ian - Ham
All,

I have about three more weeks before my family's school year schedule makes
my Sundays too unpredictable to reliably call the Elecraft SSB Net. We want
this fun net to continue. If there is anyone who can take over calling the
net, starting on August 23, please email me off-list so arrangements can be
made. Email is good in the signature block, below, or on QRZ.com.

Thanks and 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Hi Res K3S+P3 Studio Picture (1920x1080) available for download

2015-08-01 Thread Ian - Ham
Eric,

Was there ever a similar photo available of the K3/P3 combo? The new one you
linked to here is a great looking photo. However, I'm still using the
vintage ( :-) ) K3, s/n 281, with a P3, s/n 688, and don't plan to
upgrade. I'd love to have a similar photo to replace the stock wallpaper on
my shack PC, representing the Elecraft gear I actually run. If there isn't
one available, I completely understand.

Thanks and 73,

A cool new 1920x1080 high-res studio picture of the K3S with P3 available
for download.

Its perfect for use on hi-res desktop monitors for wallpaper backgrounds
etc.
and can be easily resized for others. Its the same picture (but in higher
res) as the new K3S picture we have just added to our main web page at
http://elecraft.com

A link to it this high-res version will be up on our K3S product web page
shortly, but I've also included a temporary direct link here that will be it
available for the next week or two. (When you go this link, click on
Download
to get the larger full resolution version.

[Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net Announcement

2015-07-12 Thread Ian - Ham
All,

Due to an unexpected family matter, I will be unavailable to call the SSB
net today. If someone can pick it up, the net will be held at 1800 UTC on
14.3035 +/-. If nobody can pick it up, today's net is cancelled.

I apologize for the short notice. The net will return next week at its usual
time and frequency.

The net is still Sunday afternoon at 1800 UTC on 14.3035 +/-. However, Ian,
KM4IK, will be net control from the metro Atlanta area the next two weeks.
Please point your beams toward Georgia and EM74 to check into the net.

[Elecraft] OT: Looking for Field Day Site, Columbia SC

2015-05-26 Thread Ian - Ham
All,

I have an acquaintance in the Columbia, SC, area, who is interested in
getting into amateur radio. I suggested that Field Day would be a great
place for him to really get a good look at today's amateur radio. When I
checked the ARRL Field Day Locator, there are no sites listed yet for
Columbia. Does anyone on list know of any Field Day activities in Columbia?
He lives in the Lexington/West Columbia/South Congaree areas, but I'll
happily provide him info on any Field Day site anywhere in Metro Columbia.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Larry. Some of these are new since I looked Sunday. At that time,
the closest site to Lexington was in Camden. A couple of the sites showing

[Elecraft] Slightly OT: 2015 Georgia QSO Party

2015-04-10 Thread Ian - Ham
All,

In 22 hours, the 54th Annual Georgia QSO Party gets under way. The Georgia
QSO Party is routinely hailed as one of the country's best QSO parties! This
is the one time a year when all (or nearly all) 159 counties in Georgia will
be activated. If you are a county-hunter, looking for band or mode fills for
your WAS/Triple Play, or just like to contest and have fun, please come join
us. Activity will be hot and heavy on all HF bands, using SSB or CW. The
rovers are all ready to head out and activate those rare counties so you
county-hunters can up your counts and/or get your band/mode fills. The fun
starts at 18:00 UTC this Saturday, April 11. The contest runs for 10 full
hours on Saturday (1800 UTC - 0400 UTC Sunday) and ten full hours Sunday
(1400 UTC - 2359 UTC). I'll be active the entire contest on the phone
portions of the bands. If you need Georgia, or Fulton County, give me a
shout and we'll get you taken care of. For more details, please see
http://www.georgiaqsoparty.com.

See you on the air this weekend!

[Elecraft] Slightly OT: 2015 Georgia QSO Party

2015-04-03 Thread Ian - Ham
It's almost that time again! The 54th nearly annual running of the Georgia
QSO Party takes place in 8 days - starting on Saturday, April 11, at 1800
UTC. This is widely regarded as one of the best state QSO parties in the
nation, with hams working hard all weekend to activate all 159 Georgia
counties. For you contesters working on Worked All States, or you county
hunters working toward Worked All Counties, this is the best opportunity to
catch Georgia and its rare and elusive counties on the air! Operating times
span 20 hours over the course of the weekend, with the contest wrapping up
at 2359 UTC Sunday evening. I'll be on HF High Power from my QTH in Roswell,
outside Atlanta. Please join me for the fun that is, and will be, the 2015
Georgia QSO Party. Details at http://www.georgiaqsoparty.org.

See you on the air and 73!

[Elecraft] OT - GA QSO Party Coming Up Soon!

2015-03-22 Thread Ian - Ham
Thanks for the slightly OT bandwidth:

It's almost that time again! The 54th running of the Georgia QSO Party takes
place April 11 and 12, 2015. The Georgia QSO Party is widely regarded as one
of the best state QSO parties in the country. We work incredibly hard to get
hams into all 159 Georgia counties to maximize the overall fun of the
contest and give county hunters opportunities at the rarer Georgia counties.
I will be active from my Fulton County home throughout the contest on SSB,
operating on as many bands as time and propagation allows. I hope everyone
will take a few hours to stop by, say Hello, and work a few Georgia
counties. Full details can be found at http://www.georgiaqsoparty.org/

Nope, not a Null Modem, just a gender changer with the #10 pin clipped (upon
closer inspection.) And I had written on it KL INT or maybe INT KL for which
I have no idea as to the meaning. But no worries it all works great now. ;)

2015-03-15 Thread Ian - Ham
Mike,

I recently had a similar problem with my KPA500. A couple of components in
the low frequency T/R filter blew out. The amp made a trip back to the
Watsonville. I suggest checking with Elecraft support on this issue.

Hope this helps.

I was on a net this morning thinking I had my amp on (it did show OPER),
however I found it was only putting out 30 watts. Moving to STBY I was
putting out 95 watts with the K3 alone, but in OPER the KPA500 only put out
30. My per band setting showed the normal 24 watts (with the asterisk) but
instead of 500w I was only getting 30 watts. I increased the K3 output to
70w and the KPA500 output increased to 50 watts.

I recently upgraded to 5.14 FW on the K3 and forgot to do the 50 watt
calibration. I did go ahead on run the calibration just now, but the low
KPA500 output remains the same.

Nothing else has changed.

Any suggestions? 73 ..mike AI6II

Subject: [Elecraft] Using PR6-10 with KPAK3AUX

All,

I decided to take the plunge this spring and see what 6m is all about. To
that end, I purchased a PR6-10 NIB from an estate sale, and am eager to get
it installed with my K-Line. I already have the ACC port on my K3 occupied
by the KPAK3AUX cable for the KPA500/KAT500. I'm looking for any
suggestions on how to get the DIGOUT1 line from the cabling for the PR6-10
to pin 11 on the ACC port without totally destroying the KPAK3AUX cable. If
anyone has already done this, and could provide guidance, I'd be very
appreciative.

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] Using PR6-10 with KPAK3AUX

2015-03-14 Thread Ian - Ham

Re: [Elecraft] Contemplating Purchase of K3

2015-03-07 Thread Ian - Ham
I would still consider adding the 100W internal ATU for a couple of reasons.
If your KAT500 goes out and you have to send it back to the mother ship for
repair, you'll still be able to use any antenna you want. You won't be forced
into finding resonant antennas for the bands you want to operate. Also, it
will be much easier to operate portable (I know, you have the KX3 :-) ) if you
ever want to do so. And, the K3 is a great rig for operating portable if you
want more juice than the KX3 offers. Just ask anyone who's been on the recent
DXpeditions that used the K-Line.

Hope this is helpful.

I’m thinking about purchasing the K3-100 kit. I plan start with the minimum
configuration and adding features as I get the $$.. I already have the KX3,
PX3 and am using the KPA500 and KAT500 with my Icom 756 Pro II.

I’ll assume I won’t need the internal atu with the K3, and will add the P3 and
IF out board when the time comes. I’ll get the interface cable to the KAT500…
With this bare bones K3, is there anything else that you all might feel is
indispensable?

[Elecraft] Power cord for KPA500

2015-03-07 Thread Ian - Ham
My father-in-law (KC4YBO) just bought a KPA500 off an estate sale. It is
currently wired for 220 VAC. He will convert it to 115 VAC for use in our
shack. Is there any reason he can't use an old computer power cord we have
lying around for the KPA500, if it will fit the amp's power block?

Thanks and 73,

All,

Thank you for the replies. My father-in-law was able to source a 14 ga.
Server power cable locally, and will get the proper power supply fuse from
one of the many electrical supply houses here in the Atlanta area.

Re: [Elecraft] K3DVR alternatives

2015-02-09 Thread Ian - Ham
Don,

Are you planning to use this combination for daily use or for contesting?
Several contest loggers (I use N1MM personally) have the ability to program
function keys to play and transmit .wav files that call CQ, ask QRZ?, etc.
I use HRD for daily use and am not aware of this capability in that suite.
However, look at some of the free contest loggers, as they may fit the bill
for you.

Hope this helps.

A K3DVR isn't in the budget right now. I have Ham Radio Deluxe, signalink
USB (FWIW), and a computer. Is there something I can do with this
combination to mimic the K3DVR? I know I probably won't be able to use the
buttons on the K3.

Subject: [Elecraft] OT: Warm climate for a vacation/be-the-DX winter
holiday?

After spending the second holiday season in San Diego, and last year it was
Tucson, the XYL announced that next year she'd like to go someplace warm.
Yes, temperatures in the 50s in December feel cold to us. The area where we
live is between LA and Palm Springs, but our climate more closely
approximates that of Palm Springs.

I know that many fellow amateurs head for the Caribbean nations for this
purpose. That would work, as would somewhere in the South Pacific.

Anyone have any suggestions, based on past experiences?

Criteria are:

-- somewhere that English is the primary language, or is spoken widely

-- possibly a country with reciprocal-operating privileges for a US
licensee

-- easy to get there via commercial airlines

-- no hassles with customs, coming or going, with amateur gear

-- ease of getting a license/callsign for that country, if not reciprocal

-- good accommodations (villa for rent for a week or so); turnkey ham
station on premises is a plus so that we don't have to take much equipment;
hotel with room for a simple antenna

-- nearby restaurants, although cooking facilities would be helpful

We've ruled out the following:

-- Hawaii - probably the easiest option, but is nuts with tourists during
the holidays.

-- Mexico - difficult to get a license without knowing whom to bribe - been
there before and don't like it

-- The XYL looked into Belize, but I'd worry about drugs/crime anywhere in
Central America. Costa Rica, perhaps?

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance and 73 de Jim - AD6CW

At the recommendation of others, I just ordered a TASCAM US-125M from

get back from my Thanksgiving travels.

I look forward to working everyone further down the log and waterfall!

No problem. The SLUSB that I have could be used either way. It came with
the jumper wires, but I ordered the module to use it with two Icom radios,

Not sure how your SignaLink is configured for the FT-817, but if you used

you could simply open the SL box and change the internal module. Enjoy.

I've been trying to get back into the digital modes, and am discovering that
the sound card built into my PC probably isn't adequate to the task (lack of
adjustable settings in terms of equalization/balance). The old EMU0202 that
everyone recommends isn't available any longer, and a search of eBay this
morning turns up none being offered there at the moment. I have a SignaLink
USB, which is currently configured for use with my FT-817 when I'm operating
portable, and I don't want to have to reconfigure it every time I want to
use a different rig.

So, my question is this - What else are people using as an external USB
sound card with their PCs and the K3? I have an HP desktop with Windows 7.
The computer doesn't have room inside for another internal sound card due to
other expansion boards I put into it. :)

Re: [Elecraft] HRD DM780 QUESTIONS

2014-11-12 Thread Ian - Ham
If you're using macros, there is a macro command (something like log_call,
I don't recall exactly off the top of my head) that you can insert into your
73 macro to handle it. Also, you can right-click on the call sign and
there is an option on the pop-up menu to log the call.

Hope this helps.

Hi all:

I am recovering from a lightning event at W3BW on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
I have lost 3 PolyPhaser 1S-RCT. These units have become hard to find and
incredibly more expenseive than in 1999 when my tower went up. I have
decided to try using an Array Solutions ASD-16SP which protects 16 lines.

All of that is a lead-in to my question. The mounting approach for the
AS-16SP is different from that for the PolyPhasers. i need to find some
thick copper sheet that I can bend to fabricate the mounting I need.

Can anyone recommend a supplier for copper sheet --- maybe 1/8 to 3/16
thick --- and available in sizes of about 1ft. by 4 or bigger?

Thanks. BTW, The PolyPhasers protected all my remote relay lines --- those
relays are cheap and in the base of the tower. I did not get the same
protection for the rotor lines --- lost my Orion rotor --- expensive and at
the top of the tower. Oh well

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft UPS deliveries

2014-04-23 Thread Ian Kahn - Ham
Slava,

I understand your frustration. However, Elecraft has no control of the
package once it is delivered to UPS. If you request ground shipment, and
UPS says it will take 7 days to get the package to you, they will take the
full seven days. I've seen cases, on my own packages, where UPS will
actually hold the package at their distribution facility if it gets there
ahead of what they deem is the appropriate delivery schedule, rather than
just delivering the package. Please don't blame Elecraft for this one, they
can't control it.

Re: [Elecraft] Just built my new P3

2014-04-18 Thread Ian Kahn - Ham
Slava,

Congrats on the P3. I love mine with the P3SVGA board installed. Not only
can I find and work the pile-ups, I can also easily show visitors to my
shack what band conditions look like and where the big signals are, using
the external monitor.

I also have a W2. I will share, from my personal experience, that I don't
use it as much since I installed my KAT500 and KPA500 in my shack. Both of
those devices also monitor output power (KPA500) and SWR (both KAT500 and
KPA500), and I find that I get better readings from them, based on where
they sit in the RF chain. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Good luck getting your next Elecraft toys, and 73!

Well, i guess i'm one step closer to completing my K-Line...
Just built my new P3 that i received today (SN 3157).
Very nice!
Its no LP-Pan/NaP3, i tell you that, but it doesn't require a computer, so
that's the major advantage.
I've gotten pretty used to using the NaP3 on my Mac, click/drag and such.
I guess i'll get used to the P3 just the same.

Gonna start saving my pennies for the amp now...
Hopefully by Dayton i'll be good to go.
So much more stuff that i wanna get from Elecraft (W2, XG3).

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB net

2014-04-14 Thread Ian Kahn - Ham
Slava,

Band conditions, particularly on 20m, were beyond horrible over the weekend.
You probably just couldn’t hear Phil, NS7P, when he called for check-ins.
He gave me a contact on 14.343 yesterday for the GA QSO Party, and I could
barely hear him above the noise, with my Hexx-Beam pointed straight at him.
Give the net a try next week. I'm usually on the net and act as a relay
station from my QTH outside Atlanta. I wasn't on this weekend because I was
running in the GA QSO Party. If you can't hear Phil, but you can hear me,
or one of the other regular relay stations, reach out to one of us and we'll
get you checked in.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reminder on the communications chain. We can chalk my
problem up to the ubiquitous ID10T error. I totally forgot that the K3 and

Seems like the P3 utility would talk to the P3 directly but the usual serial
connection is Computer === P3 === K3.  The P3 == K3 connection is
needed so the P3 knows what band the K3 is on.
You then need two other serial port
Computer == KAT500
And
Computer == KPA500

Recently I replaced the computer in my shack. When I did so, I moved the
PCI serial board from the old computer to the new one. I then plugged my
K-line into the same ports on the computer as I originally had them plugged
into on the old computer (K3 into the integrated port, P3 and KPA500 into
the same ports on the PCI board). I then downloaded and installed all the
latest utilities. Each utility found its relevant system except for the P3
utility. The P3 is plugged into one of two possible ports in the port list
in the P3 utility. On either port, all the utility does is scan through the
various baud rates looking for the P3. The baud rate on the P3 is set to
38400, as are the physical port configurations in Device Manager on the PC.
I verified the cables are all connected properly. I verified the ports work
properly. During this whole endeavor I didn't change anything in the
connections on my K-Line.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 interface to Signalink USB question

2014-03-26 Thread Ian Kahn - Ham
Sal,

When I had a SignaLink connected to my K3, I had the Kenwood cable set for
the SignaLink. It connected as follows:

-USB from computer to SignaLink
-Cable from SignaLink to K3 rear panel Line-In and Line-Out, as
appropriately marked.

Now I just use stereo cables directly from the sound card on my PC into the
rear panel Line-In and Line-Out on the K3. I route K3 line-out to computer
line-in and K3 line-in to computer line-out.

I'm not familiar with the other audio equipment you're using, so can't
venture a comment there.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 interface to Signalink USB question

Hello everyone!
I have a Signalink USB box that I'd like to interface with my new K3. From
what I understand the preferred connection method is via the rear
Line-In/Out jacks, right? I am using those with my rack audio gear, though
(xlr mic/EQ/mixer/etc). What would you guys suggest that I do?
Can/should I use the front mic connector (it is the standard Kenwood 8-pin
pinout, right?). Or is it possible to connect the Signalink inline with the
audio stuff, between the rack and the K3?
Also, I have a new LP-PAN with an E-mu 0404 sound card that I haven't
connected yet. So I wonder if that can somehow be used for the Signalink.

I also have an iPlus box (FYI).
Thanks in advance for your suggestions and ideas!

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 through TSA Security ?

2014-03-10 Thread Ian Kahn - Ham
Phil,

I don't own a KX3, but I've taken my FT-857D (once) and my FT-817ND multiple
times (I don't travel with my K3). I never had any issues with TSA. They
didn't even bat an eye about them, in fact. I just made sure I had my
license taped to the rigs and ran them through with my laptop/iPod/other
electronics.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Re: [Elecraft] New K3 owner, couple of questions (APF vs. DUAL PB, NR under the water sound, KPA3 temp)

2014-03-10 Thread Ian Kahn - Ham
Andy,

Congratulations on the new K3! I've had mine about three years and love it.
I can only answer one part of one question for you - the Dual PB comes into
play only in RTTY operations. It shouldn't enabled for other modes. To
help you learn about your K3, you might consider purchasing Fred Cady's
book, The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, and Operation, from Lulu.com
(http://www.lulu.com/shop/search.ep?keyWords=Fred+Cadytype=Not+Servicesite
search=lulu.comq=). It will tell you all you need to know, and then some,
about the K3. And, no, Fred isn't giving me kick-backs for promoting his
book. I'm just another happy customer with no financial interest (unless
you count knowing how to run the multi-thousands of dollars piece of
equipment at my operating station).

Hope this helps.

Subject: [Elecraft] New K3 owner, couple of questions (APF vs. DUAL PB, NR
under the water sound, KPA3 temp)

Hi,

I put together my new K3 without any issues. My 8 and 10 year old daughters
helped and they really enjoyed it too. Overall I am very happy with its
performance. I do not seem to need PRE on the high bands as much, but I do
seem to need ATT on the low bands more... I guess that is by design. I have
a few things I need to figure out and the manual does not seem to help:

1. DUAL PB, APF. I am not sure I get the APF to work. I do not hear or
see the middle peak of the filter. I think I only get DUAL PB, no matter
what I set in the config menu. I am using the latest FW. Any ideas how to
verify?

2. NR: I like how the noise goes away, but I do not like the
under-the-water sound (K2 owner, no DSP experience). I seem to switch
constantly back and forth... I am using the default setting for NR (F1-1).
Is there a way to back off the setting slightly to have a better compromise
setting?

3. KPA3 temp: The fans are MUCH quieter as my K2's which is good, but
I do worry that I have not setup something right...When I monitor the KPA3
temperature, what is the max value that I should watch out for? I am getting
up to 41 C during casual operation.

Thanks in advance and 73,
Andy

Re: [Elecraft] The case for a Panadapter - opinions, please?

2014-02-28 Thread Ian Kahn - Ham
Jim,

I use the P3 for monitoring the pileup in popular DXpeditions and for seeing
where openings might be on a band for contesting. I also find it a useful
tool for finding, and avoiding, those among us who feel they need to run a
signal that's 4 or 5 KHz wide (I mostly operate SSB and PSK/RTTY).

However, I've found mine useful for another task, as well. It's a great
teaching tool when Elmering someone or introducing them to the hobby.
Sometimes things just make more sense when you can see them. If I can tune
a signal in, then show the new novice or interested non-ham what the signal
looks like, sometimes it helps things make more sense. It's amazing to
explain a concept, then show it on my K3/P3, and see the light bulb go off
in their head.

Hope this helps.

I'm basically a SP operator, especially in contests. I've found that
calling CQ is something of a waste of valuable time.

When I see options like the Panadapter, or bandscopes from other
manufacturers, I get the metaphor of fishing in a stocked pond.

So, for those of you who have this option, could you describe how it has
assisted you?
In another message, someone mentioned that weak stations outside of the
passband could be missed, which is a good point.

BTW, I'm not opposed to giving the good folks at Elecraft more of my $$$ if
this is a good idea.

In CW mode it still will not get any power out and I am stuck with the T in

CW was working fine until I went to 2m and then returned back to 6m and then

Any thoughts or ideas of what I have done would be helpful.

Now subsequently there is new firmware that makes me want the AUX cable (I
would have got it from Elecraft if I had know of the new firmware).
If I order it from Elecraft it now costs ~$46 including shipping and waiting
a week to get it.
I can get this cable locally: http://www.qvs.com/specs/CC320M1-xx_S.jpg
Will that work for the AUX cable?

Some folks feel the need for an AUX cable to tell the KAT500 what band
it is on. I don't, because the KAT500 has a very fast frequency
counter that can figure that out with a short burst of RF.

or does KAT500 come with all cable beeded to connect it to the K3?

 Yes.
I see a cable for KAT500 to KPA500 but not to the K3.

Yes. To prevent damage to its relays, the KAT500 must be able to
interrupt the keying line to any power amp that is used. It has an
RCA input, and an RCA output. So ONLY if you're running an amp, you
need an RCA-RCA between rig and KAT500, and another between KAT500 and
 power amp PTT.

Is there anything I'll be missing with the KAT500 vs the internal tuner
other than portability?

QRP autotune -- the KAT500 is optimized for high power, and doesn't
autotune very well below about 10W.
