[Elecraft] Suddenly deaf on CW

2010-03-23 Thread Keith Bainbridge
We have 2 x K3's at our club and on Sat last one of them developed a
problem. Sensitivity on 10 mtrs dropped by 80% compared to the other
radio on the same antenna.
Transmit is not affected.
I have not been out there myself to check, but any ideas would be
appreciated!
The operator Steve changed the radios over and carried on, but then
found a second problem with the replacement radio.
On switching from ssb to cw on any band the receiver stopped working
altogether.
Switch back to ssb ands all is well. The radio does not have a cw filter
fitted( its on the way ) and Nr was not selected.
Unfortunately this particular operator hates the K3 ( hes a Yaesu man )
and loves excuses to knock them :(
I hope to get out there tonight but any ideas would be a help please.

[Elecraft] K3 tuning knob wear

2009-07-20 Thread Keith Bainbridge
I remember commenting about the wear to the main VFO knob finger dimple
on my K3 ( S/No 133 ) some time ago and being told there was something
in the offing to improve things?
Is there any further update on this please?
The paint has well and truly gone and as a result the radio looks 2nd
hand
It certainly doesn't perform 2nd hand !
Here in VK6 we dont have the advantage of Europe or NA , I'm lucky if I
hear a signal on 40 or 20 these days never mind picking them out from
the interference So the tuning knob gets a LOT of work.
This is the penalty for living in the most isolated city on the planet.
One day my K3 will come into its own from Perth , I just hope I live
long enough to experience my 3rd sunspot maxima !
Cheers
Keith

[Elecraft] Loss of speaker audio K3

2009-06-27 Thread Keith Bainbridge
I've had a report today that one of the clubs K3's has lost all audio
from the internal speaker and the rear speaker jack, it just crackled
and disappeared. The headphones are still working fine.
All menu settings are correct, but no audio.
As I'm not there at present I'm unable to do any other checks but the
guys using the radio are fully conversant with the menu settings.
Any ideas guys ?
I will pay the club a visit on tuesday to check it out but wondered if
anyone else had come across this before.

[Elecraft] Multi two with two K3's

2009-01-05 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Our club VK6ANC has just been lucky enough to buy two K3's thanks to a
grant from the Lotteries here in Western Australia.
We've also bought a Sixpack and two controllers and are about to buy
either ICE filters or Dunestar filters.
We operate contests as multi one or multi two depending on the number of
available operators.
We also use WinTest as our preferred contesting software.
What we would like to know from those of you out there is have any of
you any experience with similar setups please.
We would like to be able to control all antenna/band switching/filter
selection from Wintest if possible, but with the option for manual
selection to scan around the bands with the spotter station in the multi
one scenario.
Will the K3 handle this type of operation, or do we need more
interfacing gear to do this?
We are SSB operators 99% of the time as we just dont have any CW
contestors here in the club.
If you can offer any advice we would appreciate your assistance !

[Elecraft] K3 arrivals

2008-12-23 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Our two new daughters serial numbers 2291 2292 are safely sitting next
to mother serial number 133 before installation at the NCRG club shack

They arrived exactly 1 year and 1 day after No 133.
Its a fine sight seeing three K3's , Two K2's and a KX-1 in a line up in
my shack, just wish there were some conditions happening out there.
So look out for VK6ANC and soon to be VK6NC in all the contests from now
on with a top class signal.

Merry Xmas to all on the list from a very happy camper !

[Elecraft] K3 No 133

2008-12-17 Thread Keith Bainbridge

Ok I've been very busy enjoying my K3 for almost one year now !!
( serial No 133) It's an amazing radio.
I've just started to pay creedence to the need to update/modify/ get
help for my radio.
What do I have to do to bring it up to date, I dont mean software
updates as I am on the ball there, but should I be asking Elecraft for
any mod kits etc?
I've ordered two more K3's for our club ( VK6ANC) which are in Customs
here as we speak which will be fully up to date I would imagine but what
about my old girl !

Thanks! and Merry Xmas

[Elecraft] K3, two things.

2008-11-09 Thread Keith Bainbridge

One:- is has anyone tried using the KXPD1 key with a K3 ? and does it work?
TWO :- My K3's tuning knob has already lost all the paint from the
finger hole, I dont have sharp nails and I dont tune around with it
much, but the paints almost gone and it looks real used :(

[Elecraft] W2ENY headsets for kenwood radios ( K3)

2008-10-26 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Has anyone tried Bob W2ENY's Kenwood headsets on a K3, do they plug
straight in being Kenwood plugs or do they need modification?
They seem to be excellent units and I'm looking for a possible headset/
mic combination to use here at home with K3 #133 and with our radio
club ( VK6ANC) two K3's when we get them in a few months time.

Thanks guys

[Elecraft] K3 Transmiter IMD figures

2008-08-30 Thread Keith Bainbridge
A friend has commented that in the ARRL test the IMD figures for the tx
chain of -27dB were pretty poor. I'm sure there was discussion about
this at the time the report was released but a search of the archives
hasn't revealed it to me.
Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can explain the results
to him.

Many thanks

[Elecraft] K3 ( or K2 ) with a Kenwood SM230 station monitor

2008-07-26 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Does anyone have experience using the if output of the K3 into a Kenwood
SM 230 station monitor please ?

Or using a K2 in the same scenario?
Its just that I have the chance to acquire one at a good price and as I
have the LP Pan from Larry I was wondering if the SM 230 would be a
useful asset for either of my K2's or my K3.

Thanks guys

[Elecraft] K3 bail height

2008-07-05 Thread Keith Bainbridge
After owning my K3 for over 6 months now I still find the height of the
bail annoying.
Is there anyone out there interested in making a lower height bail, say
30 mm or 1.125 lower ??
As it stands it gives me a pain in the wrist tuning around, and I spend
a lot of time tuning around as here in Western Australia there certainly
isn't too much to hear on ANY band at present!!

[Elecraft] using a K2 with transverters on satellites

2008-06-23 Thread Keith Bainbridge
I've just picked up a 2nd K2 and wondered just how good it would be on

Is any one out there using such a combination and is the 432 mhz

[Elecraft] re. Mobile/portable antennas

2008-03-05 Thread Keith Bainbridge

Yes I was refering to mobile operations , or parked up operating from a 4wd.
I have no experience of portable operations of the type you describe.
My idea of portable is my K2 on the balcony of a hotel overlooking a
beach with my Ozzipole antenna on the balcony rail.
No I'm not being sarcastic so please dont take it that way, I hate
camping, temps over 40*c, flies, ants, bugs, warm beer.

Its just not me. I like the comforts of a king size bed and a bar fridge !
So please dont take me wrong, I was and still am referring to mobile
from a vehicle, thats were the Outbacker does such a good job in the
Australian Outback.
Most other mobile whips just dont survive the conditions here, thats why
the Police, Army etc use them.
Very few camp sites here in Western Australia have room for or allow
anything more than a tv antenna or small dish, and that coupled with
exteme interference from cheap gen sets all but makes HF impossible.
A friend lives more or less permanently in a mobile home and has to park
illegally off road to use his HF gear .
I wish you well with your portable operations and I'm sure your antenna
system will work well based on what you have described.

[Elecraft] Mobile/portable antennas

2008-03-02 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Just a quick word to say totally disagree with KK5F's comments about
the Outbacker antennas.
I and many of my club mates use them on a daily basis and they certainly
do work.
I am mobile at work and consistantly get excellent reports using my
Outbacker on 40 and 20 mtrs over a 500-800 mile path from my Mitsi
outlander with 100w and a TS 50.
I also have had many DX contacts on 20 and 15 mtrs while driving around
Western Australia.
Just cos you have had no luck dont paint the antenna black. Many many
people use them daily and get excellent results, including Police, Army,
and Emergency Services.
It even may have saved a life once as it has the RFDS ( Royal flying
doctor service) tap and I was able to call for help with a heart attack
patient.

I also have a Tarheel 200HP and that works well too.
I'm surprised you made such a categoric statement about how bad the
Outbacker was.
I will send your comments to Terry at Outbacker ( only 10 miles from
here ) for his consideration.

Maybe he will contact you.
probably not.

[Elecraft] Mojo not working here :(

2008-02-27 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Sorry to say but after many days trying I could not work VP6DX from home
using my K3 , 100 watts and either my 5 band spiderbeam or my HF9V.
I had to go to the club shack ( VK6ANC ) to work them on 20 and 80 mtrs
ssb with 400 watts
All this talk of how easy it was on qrp is amazing as everyone here in
Western Australia has complained how weak they were and how hard it was
to hear then, let alone get through.
Looking at their logs for VK6 it seems very few of us got them on more
than 2 bands and some on only one. It reinforces the fact we have known
for many years here, the lower part of Zone 29 is one of the hardest
places to get signals into the south pacific and South America.
I had worked virtually all of South America from G land before I
emigrated in 1987 ... on 10 mtrs FM, so far in 20 + years in Western
Australia I've worked a total of 4 South American countries on any band
!! And Brazil was on AO-40 !!

You guys enjoy the mojo I will have to wait a few more years yet I think :(

[Elecraft] K3 Complaints

2008-01-19 Thread Keith Bainbridge
I've been as guilty as many others complaining about waiting for their
K3's but I have mine now.
I've ordered and paid for my 2nd receiver and digital voice module and
now it's going to be delayed.
I can be patient as I know it will be well worth the wait. The K3 has
exceeded my expectations by at least 50%.
It leaves my K2 and my Omni 6 opt3 for dead on receive and I've had so
many complimentary audio reports its downright embarrassing !
I still cant get it to talk to DRM780 but HRD works great as does
Omnicat and trx-manager using the K2 settings.
To all those out there who insist on knocking Elecraft for trying to
give us the best radio in the marketplace I would ask, if you want a
Rolls Royce you would be prepared to join the 2-3 year waiting list ,
wouldn't you?
Incidently it seems the vast majority of those complaining about all
matters Elecraft appear to be poms ( or limeys for your side of
the pond )
As a former pom , now a true blue Aussie, please be patient and it
will be worth it, dont earn yourselves that well known Aussie
expression Whinging Bloody Pom !!

[Elecraft] Serial Number 133

2007-12-21 Thread Keith Bainbridge
Last night at 11.50 my youngest daughter left for England and the family
was sad, but .. 29 minutes later my new baby arrived in Perth !! so
all was joyous.
It was ordered in the early hours of 29th April and was delivered approx
8 months and 23 days later, a perfect gestation period.
I picked it up this morniong and can report father and bub doing well
getting to know each other !
Serial number is 133 and its a fully assembled, 100watt , complete with
ATU bouncing bundle of health.

Just need to get the settings right on the mic and will be on air tonight.
It was supposed to be a birthday present in July but turned out to be a
great Xmas pressie instead.
Thanks to Lisa for her patience with my persistant enquiries and to the
Elecraft team for such a fine radio... and isnt the receiver quiet !!

[Elecraft] K3 assembled version explanation

2007-11-27 Thread Keith Bainbridge
I had a brief chat with Lisa yesterday, expressing my concern that I had
placed my order early hours PDT of 30th April and heard nothing as yet.
She explained that the ASSEMBLED versions of the K3 were taking longer

next week.

Knowing that I am happy to sit back and await the magic box.
So if you are waiting for an assembled K3 as well, that why you are
still waiting !!

[Elecraft] Disappointing delays in responses.

2007-11-23 Thread Keith Bainbridge
I ordered my K3 at 06-16 am PDT on 30/4/2007, by fax, receipt is
available on my telecons bill !

I paid half up front and the balance August 29.
I have sent an email to Lisa on monday this week and received no reply
at all.
Now I see people who ordered on May 1st have been notified of their
dispatch.
I've been one of the ones reading the email thinking, c'mon guys be
patient, but now I'm more than a little concerned.
I think its about time we knew when we are going to receive our orders
please.
My friends are laughing at me for paying for something so far in
advance of receiving anything.
I have faith in Elecraft, my K2 is one of the best pieces of gear I've
ever owned, but my faith is wearing thin.

Will the powers that be please keep us informed !

[Elecraft] Australian K3's

2007-11-12 Thread Keith Bainbridge

Seems I was wrong about being the 1st VK with a K3 :(
Apparently there is one in VK2 already and VK4BG is expecting his b4 me :(
Oh well , I thought I'd ordered b4 Glenn vk4bg but it seems not.
I am a very patient person by nature and after taking part in last
nights EmmCom emergency disaster net with my TenTec omni 6 I see no
need for a new radio as there wil be no one on the band to talk to anyway.
Its OK for you guys in europe and the US but the bands are bloody dead
here in VK6 !!

I think my K3 will be here and waiting for a contact for months !
Such is life

project produces a fully operational HF radio and I cant wait, I want
the best now !
I love my K2 but it does have operational limitations and I can see the
K3 will be so much easier to operate.
One thing I dislike immensely about my K2 is the receive audio from the
speaker, or even an external speaker. I use a Sansui HiFi amp to improve
things here, will the K3 have better rx audio?
I'm an SSB operator 99% of the time with digital modes sometimes, but
the K2 is soo far behind my OmniVI opt 3 that I sometimes dread
listening to it.

Hopefully this will be addressed in the K3 so I will take my chances !
Great product, great service and even though I'm a Pommie living in
Australia the best radios still come from the good old US of A.
