[Elecraft] For Sale: 4-band K1 (needs work)

2017-12-02 Thread Ken Alexander
=== Full disclosure:  This radio needs work to get it going. ===
I got it in a trade with another ham a few years ago.  I bought a 4-band filter
board for it, and after staring intently at the parts layout diagram I STILL
installed the four trimmer capacitors backwards!  It does work with them
installed this way.  I was told the difference is that the metal screw heads
you adjust are grounded when they are installed correctly.  Otherwise one could
probably use a plastic adjustment tool.  You can also remove them and install
them correctly.
As I recall, the alignment procedures went fine except for 15m, where there was
no output.  At this point I put it aside and it has been collecting dust.
The ham I got it from thought it would look better with wooden side panels.
They're nicely finished and about 1/8" thick.  They don't look awful, but I
wouldn't have done it.  Not sure if they are glued to the existing aluminum
side panels or if the screws hold them.  The radio is cosmetically good in
every other respect.
Serial Number 00863
U.S. $300.  I will pay for shipping to addresses in Canada or CONUS.
73 and thanks for your interest,
Ken Alexander

[Elecraft] K1 price?

2017-12-01 Thread Ken Alexander

Hi Folks,

I have a K1 that I'd like to put up for sale. I don't remember what
they sold for originally and I'd like to price it fairly. It has a
4-band filter board and I think I can dig out the original 2-band board
too. Any help would be appreciated.

[Elecraft] Does the KXUSBa (USB to 3.5mm) Have a Level Converter Inside?

2016-08-27 Thread Ken Alexander

Hi All,

I'm thinking of using a KXUSB cable for CAT control of an FT-817ND. The
817 apparently cannot use RS232 straight from a computer (as the K2
couldn't as I recall) and requires a level converter. However, I have a
handful of KXUSB cables now and was wondering if using one with my 817
will be as simple as making an adapter to go from the 3.5mm plug to the
8-pin mini-DIN that plugs into the 817.

So, long story short; can I go straight from a KXUSB to an FT-817
without a level converter or do I need to add one inline. I'd prefer
not to find out the hard way! :-)

Many thanks,

Ken Alexander

"XVn RF sets the operating frequency". I assume this means the transverter's
operating frequency? Is it just a number for display like 432 or something?

Yes 432 is correct.

You also have another setting for XVn IF which in my case is 14, your's will
probably be 28.

What's a legitimate number to enter when I'm setting up an XV432? No
information in the manual. I tried going to look at the transverter setup for
my KX3-2M option but it doesn't display any more??

"XVn PWR sets maximum power output in watts". The XV432's maximum output is 20
watts. How come the setting only goes as high as 8 watts and then rolls over back to 0.5
watts?

It isn't the transverter power output, but the input power to the transverter.
I don't have an XV432 so don't know what it uses. I use a 2m transverter by ME
and it can be set for powers up to 3 watts, that was what I chose for that
setting, as it allows the setting of output power from the KX3 fairly
accurately.

"XVn OFS can compensate for frequency offset". We read my local oscillator's
output to be 4 Hz high and left it at that. Is this where I compensate for that, if it's
even needed? If so, the manual doesn't say how to do it. It only says you don't need to
do it for the KX3-2M/4M module. That doesn't help me.

This is a handy feature if your transverter LO is out a bit, you can put the
compensation figure in there, and either measure the transverter output
frequency on transmit, or use an accurate signal into the receive side and
adjust it to get the right dial reading when using CW and tuned in accurately.
4 Hz isn't going to be a problem you could leave it at 0. The KX3 will probably
be out more than that.

"XVn ADR". It doesn't sound like I really need to do this if I have just the
one XV transverter. The Key Line at ACC2 keys the transverter just fine as-is.

Fine.

In my case I have my 144 MHz transverter on XV2 and XV2 ADR is trn2

My internal 70 MHz transverter and XV1 ADR is Int. trn0

My next transverter will most likely be for 1296, which unfortunately means
it won't be an Elecraft. In that case I guess I can still set it up as a band
in my KX3 but I'll have to manually disconnect my XV432 and then connect up the
1296 transverter. Well, or use a good antenna switch or relay.

Yes you will want to investigate a way to do the switching of IF and Keyline.
There are ways to do this automatically if you build a decoder to read the KX3
band from the serial port. G4FRE makes a board with a PIC to do just that,
though you need to supply your own relays for the IF switching.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

[Elecraft] KX3 + XV432

2016-06-24 Thread Ken Alexander
I'm trying to complete the alignment and setup on my newly completed
XV432. I'm going to use it with my KX3.

I made a cable so the KX3 can key the XV432 to transmit. RCA phono plug
at the XV432 and a 2.5mm stereo plug for ACC2 on the KX3. Center pin on
the phono plug connects to the RING on the stereo plug. Whenever I
connect the two units together with the cable the XV432 go into
transmit. If I unplug it from the KX3 it goes back into receive.

I checked that only the RING and ground are connected at the stereo
plug. I have checked for shorts (ring/center pin to ground) and
continuity (from ground to ground and RING to center pin) many times and
everything is OK.

With the cable plugged in to the KX3 I measure infinite resistance (open
circuit) across the phono plug.

The RING terminal is not affected by ACC2 IO menu settings.

My understanding is that the keyline goes low during transmit, according
to the KX3 manual. It's not low when I check it on receive, but it
still keys the transverter when I connect the two of them together. I
think I've covered all possibilities, but they aren't working together
the way they should.

Anybody have any ideas. I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks and 73,

Ken Alexander

Re: [Elecraft] How to make the KX3 controlled by logging sofftware like N1MM??

2015-11-30 Thread Ken Alexander
No extra devices, just the USB interface cable that comes with the KX3.
Connect it from a USB port on your computer to ACC1 on the KX3 (described on p.
5 in the KX3 manual). You can use the KX3 Utility to test the connection (I
think you have to close the com port after testing it with KX3 Utility.
Otherwise N1MM will think it's still in use).

Go into the configure ports screen in N1MM and set COM3 to work with a KX3
(pulldown list) and click the SET button to set up the serial communication
parameters. The latest version of N1MM even suggests the proper settings to
use for a KX3.

Not the most complete description, but I'm at the office and working from
memory, which is always dangerous for me. I think you should be able to get it
running with this procedure. You'll know it's working when you see the KX3's
frequency displayed in the upper left corner of N1MM's main window.

Hope this helps,

Re: [Elecraft] [Bulk] Re: KX3 Internal soundcard

2015-11-14 Thread Ken Alexander
Myself, I would prefer not to lose my 2m capability. There seems to be
more extra space inside the PX3 cabinet for options, if you don't mind
being tied to a PX3.

I don't necessarily need an internal sound card. I'm very happy with
the external soundcard I use with my notebook computer. However, I won't
ever buy another transceiver that doesn't have a dedicated Data jack,
even if it does say Elecraft on the front. I find it a pain to be
constantly unplugging cables and inserting new ones each time I change
modes. I'm afraid of wearing out the 3.5mm jacks on the KX3 with all
the inserting in and removing of plugs. I know I can use Y-adapters,
but that only adds to the considerable mess hanging off the side of my KX3.

The sound card would be high quality and have a low latency for use
on software such as the MS-DMT M110A modem software.

Such a sound card would allow a connection to the KX3 without resorting
to special cabling for headset with mic that would have to split the audio

KX3

the KXPA100 and PX3 when all the KX3 ports on the left side are used.

Maybe Wayne and Eric should talk to K1EL about licensing (or whatever it

Re: [Elecraft] When is mode A not mode A?

It sounds like you have a Mode A keyer and a Mode B hand Roger! There's a
switch somewhere to change your hand back to Mode A. Hope you kept the
manual!! :-)

I love my KX3 and its little paddle.
Unfortunately my keying is full of mistakes. When I send the
letter C for example, it often comes out as CT or K. I
thought the KX3 must be set to mode B keying, but no, it was
on mode A. I originally learnt to send on an ETM-3b squeeze
keyer many moons ago. The ETM-3b is a mode A keyer. I tried
plugging a Bencher paddle into the KX3 but the problem
remained, so the paddle is not the problem. Is the mode A,
that I am used to, somehow different to the mode A in the
 KX3?

Ha ha! The problem was I was overdriving the KX3 so there was audio

* CW-IN-SSB TRANSMIT ADDED: This feature allows you to send CW while
in SSB mode, which can be useful when your SSB signal cannot be copied
due to poor conditions. The other station will hear a tone at your CW
pitch. To enable CW-in-SSB: Locate the CW WGHT menu entry, then tap
‘1’ (PRE) to alternate between “SSW +CW” (enabled) and “SSB –CW”
(disabled). The default is disabled. ImportantNotes: (1) CW-in-SSB
does not yet apply in SPLIT mode. (2) When CW-in-SSB is enabled,
tapping the KEYER/MIC knob toggles between keyer speed and mic
gain rather than between the two transmit metering scales (CMP/ALC and
SWR/RF). The CMP/ALC scale is still shown temporarily whenever CMP or
mic gain are adjusted.

So that is what was causing it. DATA mode allows you to toggle it to
one or the other so when you go back to SSB.

Useful to know.

[Elecraft] Touch screens, etc.

2015-09-04 Thread Ken Alexander
If Elecraft came out with a touchscreen transceiver I would buy it if they
maintain their usual standards of performance. And I don't think we have to
worry about that.

However, before Elecraft goes the touchscreen route I would much rather see
them use a colour LCD screen on their transceivers than the type they use on
the K3/K3S/KX3. They are OK, but so much more could be displayed (or at least
less cryptically) when you aren't constrained by a predetermined display.
Firmware upgrades could give you new display options, like reducing the size of
one display item (or temporarily removing it) to give you more room to look at
something else!

That's the future I'd like to see!

[Elecraft] KX3 - setting sidetone pitch

2015-08-30 Thread Ken Alexander
I'm having trouble selecting the sidetone pitch I want. The KX3 came
pre-set at 550 Hz, which is a little low for my ears. My K2 was set to
650 and that worked well.

All the KX3 manual says (p. 16) is "The receiver's passband will be
centered at the pitch you select"...but not a word on how to select the
pitch I want! I pressed PITCH and tried rotating the VFO A and B dials
but moving them does nothing except kick you out of pitch mode.

I thought it might be a Menu setting (that's where I'd put it because
it's a set-and-forget function for me) but there's nothing there either.

How does one specify the sidetone frequency they want?

Thanks and 73,

[Elecraft] PX3 opposite sideband nulling

2015-08-28 Thread Ken Alexander
In a word: I can’t. OK, that’s two words.

I have followed the procedure and am using the PX3s calibration signal as the
signal source. I have recorded the initial Amplitude and Phase settings. I
can see the two sideband peaks on the display and watch them move closer and
further from the centre of the display as I change frequency. However, no
amount of adjusting the phase of amplitude settings will cause the opposite
sideband to change whatsoever. I am open to suggestions.

One other point. There’s no mention that I can find in the nulling procedure
that says what MODE I should be in. If the opposite sideband is on the right
of the display then shouldn’t I be in LSB? If it doesn’t matter for this
procedure then that would have been useful information too.

Any ideas or assistance would be gratefully received!

Thanks and 73,

Ken Alexander

Re: [Elecraft] Taking KX3 to Italy on vacation

2015-08-28 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Tom,

My first reaction is that they won’t charge you anything unless you plan on
selling it there, i.e., you’re not importing it. If it’s your personal
property and you’re taking it home with you it’s the same as all the other
things you’re bringing with you.

Of greater importance is knowing about licensing agreements and what you need
to know to legally operate from Italy.

Others may know better, but that’s my take on it.

Re: [Elecraft] SideKar vs PX3

2015-07-29 Thread Ken Alexander
Interesting, I just ordered a KX3 and PX3 yesterday! I didn't realize that
there were provisions to plug a keyboard into a PX3, or is this a future thing?

I visited the QRPworks website and their products were one of the reasons why I
chose the KX3/PX3 over an Anan-10. If Elecraft is planning to provide for the
addition of a keyboard then I'm even happier about my decision.

I am looking at purchasing a QRPworks
 SideKar display and USB keyboard
terminal to use with my KX3.  I guess I have given up
 waiting for the
keyboard for the PX3.  Does anyone have experience with
 the QRPworks
products and in particular, the SideKar?  I like the
 idea of macros and
messages that allow for serial numbers.  I am not sure
 about logging as
paper seems fine, but a data file would make it easy to
 enter contacts
into LoTW.   My K1EL K42 CW Keyboard also
 "does" serial numbers and can
embed the callers callsign into the message.  I CAN use
 the K1EL
keyboard for CW but it won't work for PSK31 or RTTY with the
 KX3 using a
key input as the KX3 only will do PSK31/RTTY with a paddle
 (why not
keyer generated input?).  Since I want to do PSK31 with
 a keyboard, I
may be "stuck" with a SideKar without the ability of the PX3
 to handle a
 keyboard (and serial numbers)...
What are others using for PSK31 portable (no computer) with
 your KX3?

Re: [Elecraft] USPS shipping rates for non USA

Hi Michael,

Yeah, it's been like that the last few years anyway. Some of the less
expensive items aren't worth ordering unless you can bundle them with a
few other items. Not much that can be done...unless Elecraft wants to
sign up with a Canadian amateur radio retailer. That would be nice!

installing the high accuracy crystal option.

The manual says:

L4 has an orange body with four turns. (It looks red to me and it
has 3.5 turns, close enough I guess)
L19 has a yellow body with four turns. (I count 4.5 turns,
_definitely_ one more turn than L4. At least it's yellow)

The installation instructions that come with the high accuracy
crystal option say to remove L19 from the circuit board. Since I'm
just about to install it this seems like a good time to make the
substitution. EXCEPT, it says that L19 has a RED plastic coil form,
not yellow like the XV432 manual says. I do note that the substitute
coil that comes in the high accuracy crystal option is yellow and has
exactly the same 4.5 turns as the yellow bodied coil called L19 in
the XV432 assembly manual.

I assume the error is in the instruction sheet for the high accuracy
crystal option, and that they meant to say that L19 is yellow and not
red. However, I'd feel safer if someone who has built one before
could kindly confirm this.

The second thing that bothers me is why does one 4-turn inductor have
one more turn than the other 4-turn inductor?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 AM-breakthrough

2013-07-29 Thread Ken Alexander
Hello Klaus,

I wonder if it's possible that some of the foreign stations you reported
hearing are being relayed by a European broadcast station much closer to you,
and that's why they are strong enough to contribute to your break through
problems.  Just a thought.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 AM-breakthrough

Thank you all for taking the time to answer to this issue.

I will respond to some of the arguments and tips ..

Klaus, I already have current baluns at both ends of the coax cable.

The KX3 is driven by an analog old PS30 power supply, not a switching
power supply.

I already mentioned the AM stations are far ones.
The last "Ortssender" around, Stuttgart Mühlacker, has been put out of service.

Emory, same here, only when the broadcast bands open, good conditions,
the effect takes place. Your double size G5RV delivers similar strong rf-levels
as my antenna then. It is not one AM-station, depending
on ionospheric conditions it may be and often is every time another one.

Uwe, "very annoying", that's the point.

Ralf, I think, because the AM-breakthrough signals are hearable
at every frequency they are not mixing products from a nearby
electronic device or a diode build by corrosion. This would cause
a lot of but discrete signals.

Matt and Don, if this is a problem with _any_ zero
frequency IF (direct conversion) receiver then the KX3's
concept would be a design error. ( I hope it is not.)

If I switch to RX SHIFT I will have a receiver with the
most advertised KX3 feature, narrow spaced dynamic range,
dropping to values of rigs of the last century, like IC-735
or Lowe HF-235 or Drake SW8.
(see http://www.sherweng.com/table.html)

Additional I would have thrown the money for the roofing filters
out of the window, as we say here in Germany.

I hope there is a possiblity of rejection by software, but I
have no expertise in SDR at all.

No one of Elecraft has answered up to now, so I stay curious.

Like this one? Telling people what and/or what not to discuss is not only not
your job... It is contrary to one of the very principles that we hold so dear.
Having said that, I do recognize that this is a private forum so it is the job
of the digital landlord, i.e. Wayne & Eric, to decide what content may reside

I would be more than willing to pay a stipend to Elecraft in order to subsidize
the cost of increased server space. This might allow some additional leeway so

Re: [Elecraft] 6 meters

It's not "stuck in the past" if operating on 6m would cause interference
to other licensed services. Thailand certainly isn't the only country
that doesn't permit 6m operation.

A list of approved transceivers would appear dated if the majority of
newer transceivers include 6m coverage.

Re: [Elecraft] Portable Antennas (Is there an "easy" button?)

2012-05-06 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Bernie,

You might have to trim the antenna wire a bit so that the autotuners
will load it up on all bands, and maybe add one or two extra wires on
the ground side. After that you should have yourself a very good,
compact antenna.

I worked Seychelles on my KX-1 on batteries (2 watts) on 20m years ago
with a 24 ft wire and two 8-foot radials that were stretched actoss my
2nd floor bedroom floor. The antenna wire ran out to a tree outside my
window.

Re: [Elecraft] Loading inductor Question

2012-05-01 Thread Ken Alexander
Many thanks for all the helpful responses!  I do have many toroid cores in
stock already but almost all are FT-50-xx and T-50-xx.  I'll do the research
and the math and give it a try when antenna building season arrives.  It's
still a little too cold and wet for that at the moment.

Folks,

Given that inductors on toroid cores are used extensively in autotuners, is
there any reason (assuming I choose the right size core, made of the correct
material for the application and winding it with the right size wire) for not
using one as a base loading inductor on a vertical antenna?  I'm talking 100
watts maximum transmitter output here.

Any down side to doing this?

Hi Ken …

Just checked the Fair-rite website, and the type 31 cores are indeed there.
But they aren't easy to find.   You need to go to Products then Cable
components then EMI suppression beads.

They have a wide variety of part numbers using type 31 material.

I buy mine from Mouser which has no minimum order quantities, good stocking,
reasonable prices and wonderful delivery and service.  I can't speak to their
service to Canada.   I've bought many different PNs of type 31 from them.
After you find the PNs you are interested in from the Fair-rite site, do a
search on those PNs in the Mouser site.

Have fun & 73

Nope!  I can't find what you're talking about.  There's something wrong when
someone have to provide a tutorial on how to navigate their website.  Somebody
should be thinking "maybe our website isn't that easy to use."

Anyway, never mind.  I'll try Digi-Key , Mouser, etc.

They are there -- you have to look under the EMC products, not inductive
products. Same thing, but the inductive parts are tested for inductance
at low frequencies while the EMC parts are tested for impedance at
higher frequencies.  See Appendix One of the RFI tutorial for Fair-Rite
part numbers and a list of known good sources.  Off the top of my head,
Allied, Newark, Digikey, Kreiger, Lodestone Pacific come to mind.  It
pays to shop around, and to buy in quantity, combining quantities with
your ham neighbors and clubs.

[Elecraft] Source for Type 31 Toroids

2012-02-10 Thread Ken Alexander
I have some interference problems with my receivers and have been
reading Jim K9YCs excellent article on the subject. It sounds like type
31 ferrite toroids will be the answer to some of my problems and I'm
interestedin buying some.

I had always considered Fair-Rite to be the main source of just about
everything made of ferrite, and Jim mentions them several times in his
article. However, Fair-Rite's online catalog does not list them in
their toroid section, nor are they shown in their downloadable PDF catalog.

I'm pretty sure Amidon doesn't have them either. Where else can I
look? Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

[Elecraft] Builder Wanted for Softrock Kits

I'm looking for someone who can build two Softrock RX Ensemble II

mount components are just too small for my arthritic fingers to handle.
Thus, one kit is approximately 25% complete and the other kit has not
been started. I'd prefer someone who has experience with building and
testing Softrock kits, but if you have experience working with surface

Please reply off-list and let me know how much you would like to
complete the kits.

Re: [Elecraft] 600 meters

2012-01-12 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Bob,

I wasn't paying close attention, but I thought I read that the KX3 will
cover the upper half of the MW band and could be made to cover the rest
of the band in the future. Hopefully, somebody with a better memory
than mine will jump in and correct me. The thought of receiving the
mediumwave band with something as good as an Elecraft leaves me
breathless. Being able to transmit on the 600m band with an Elecraft is
just too cool to contemplate!

Re: [Elecraft] Trying to get to grips with the KDSP2 Filter

2012-01-03 Thread Ken Alexander
I don't know why C.1 would say LPA.SS. It sounds like something hasn't
been set correctly. The other settings look OK. .60 means the filter
is centered on 600 Hz and the number to the right is the width of the
filter in kHz, where .80 would be 800 Hz and .10 would be 100 Hz (for
contests, etc.)

Re: [Elecraft] Trying to get to grips with the KDSP2 Filter

2012-01-03 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Ray,

I'm not an expert on the DSP, but my K2 has one and I'm happy with it.
To answer your questions:

1. The CW filters, like the SSB and RTTY filters are activated by using
the AFIL button on the front panel. nr = noise reduction I think the
DSP filter comes already configured, although I'm not positive about
that because I didn't buile mine either. Hopefully, some smarter person
will jump in and help. Regardless, you can cownload a copy of the KDSP2
manual from the Manuals and Downloads section of the Elecraft website.
It will tell you how to configure and use the filter.

2. The settings shown are perfectly good. The manual explains what
everything means. My interpretation is that the left hand number is the
frequency where the low pass filter kicks in and the right hand number
is the bandwidth...1 kHz for general uncrowded conditions and 200 Hz
during contests when the band is packed with signals.

3. The noise reduction works well on CW signals, although it softens
them somewhat, which some people don't like. But it does get rid of a
lot of noise! There are several "strengths" to which the noise
reduction can be set. I've always found the lowest setting to be the
best but that's a personal preference. Noise reduction isn't available
with the RTTY filters because it degrades the signal too much and makes
decoding difficult.

Definitely download yourself a copy of the manual!

Happy New Year,

Ken Alexander

Re: [Elecraft] [FT817] Vs ELECRAFT

2011-12-29 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Johnny,

I like my K2, but I've never regretted selling a transceiver more than
when I sold my FT-817. Mostly because I like VHF/UHF.

The list price for an FT-817 here is $695 + $69 (for the W4RT OBP speech
processor) + $284 (for the most expensive 2-Collins-filter package from
W4RT) = $1048 total cost. The list price for K2 with SSB, 160m, 3
transverters and the transverter interface to give identical band
coverage = ~$2300 (Gasp! And I don't get FM!). I left out optional
audio filters and (more importantly) the internal battery option, which
I should add to be fair. (* - I chose the most expensive option) Gee,
when I do the math I regret it even more!

I'd LOVE to see an HT that produces 5 watts on 6 and 2m and 70cm...on
all modes!

A K2 can produce more output than an FT-817, but if you're so concerned
about current draw on receive then should you really be transmitting
with two to three times the power? 10 to 15 watts (versus 5) on
transmit will run down a battery a lot faster than a few hundred
milliamps on receive.

There used to be a document on the Elecraft website that listed the rig
control commands the K2 accepted through its I/O port. I was looking
for it tonight and can't find it anywhere.

Would some kind soul mind pointing me to it if you can find it or e-mail
me a copy of the document if you happen to have one?

[Elecraft] Hiccups with an older K1 and a new KFL1-4

2011-12-18 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Folks,

I purchased a second hand K1 a few weeks ago and am in the process of
installing a new KFL1-4 that I just finished building.

The K1 is serial number 00863. The RF board is Rev. D and and the unit
is equipped with MCU 109E, which I think is the latest firmware version.

The hiccups:

1. I didn't have the Errata sheet in front of me and managed to install
all of the trimmer capacitors on the KFL1-4 board backwards. The
trimmers have two flat sides, not one (which was confusing...without the
Errata in front of me). I read that the adjusting screw is to be on the
side that connects to ground. Thinking I was a smart guy, I used an
ohmmeter to determine which trimmer terminal that was...and I still
managed to get it wrong! Anyway, I used a non-metallic screwdriver to
do the alignment and all went well. That said, is there any reason why
I should remove and re-install (or just replace) the trimmers now?

2. All went well when I did the 4-Band Transmitter Alignment on page 19
of the KFL1-4 manual except that output on 15m is approximately 200 to
300 mW on the K1's internal and an external wattmeter. Output on all
other bands was 2+ watts. Output on 15m remains at 200 to 300 mW even
when I increase the power to 5W. All other bands are OK. Low output is
covered in the Troubleshooting section, but not that I can see when it's
only 1 band out of 4. Any thoughts?

3. I didn't get the original manual with the K1 and there are several
differences between the Rev. D RF board and the manual I downloaded from
the Elecraft website. The Rev. D RF board doesn't have a place for S2
(for transmitter offset adjustment). However, there appears to be a
location for a switch at the front of the board, on the bottom and
immediately behind the P1 header. Same thing? Just in a different
location?

Many thanks for any assistance!

Re: [Elecraft] Vibroplex - seen on ABC Pan Am (OT)

2011-10-29 Thread Ken Alexander
It sounds like everyone is saying sending sloppy code is desirable. How
odd; I always thought hams took pride in their sending. Well formed,
well spaced characters are much easier to copy. I find nothing quaint
or charming about sending dits at 30wpm and dahs at 10 wpm, which is
typical of what I hear. Either slow down the dits or speed up the
manually sent dahs. I know there are limits on how slow you can send
dits with a bug, but if you can't slow it down enough then consider
using another instrument for sending code or resign yourself to the fact
that VE3HLS will never answer your CQ (that should be pretty easy to
live with)! :-)

dah dah dididit dididit
dah dah! :-)

Re: [Elecraft] Vibroplex - seen on ABC Pan Am (OT)

2011-10-28 Thread Ken Alexander
Never been a big fan of bugs and the mangled code most people send with
them. But since we're barrelling off topic, I DO like the Rolex GMT
Master a few slides previous. I bought one for $35 from a watch vendor
on Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok a few years ago. It ran for the next 2
years then quit.

It's main distinguishing feature was that it said "Oyster Pertual Date"
instead of Perpetual. I wore it on the flight home and got stopped in
Customs in Toronto. "Where'd you get the Rolex?" I laughed, took it
off and handed it to the guy and said it cost $35. Then I told him he
could keep it if he wanted to. He grinned, handed it back and I was on
my way!

Nice! Looks pretty funky!

Maybe Elecraft should sponsor a design contest to make a working
all-band antenna in that exact configuration. Something they could
sell. The winner gets a complete K-Line station!

[Elecraft] For Sale: Ameritron AL-80B Linear Amplifier

2011-07-26 Thread Ken Alexander
I have an Ameritron AL-80B 1 kW amplifier for sale. It's in very good
condition. I acquired it from the estate of VE3DTQ (SK), but I'm just
not a QRO guy. I had it checked out by the local ham dealer and it puts
out 700W on all bands except 10m, where they measured 690W. That's
driving it with 85W. I was told a new 3-500Z tube would bring it right
back to advertised output. I can take some photos if anyone is interested.

I'd like $1,000 for it. Toronto area hams: I live in Newmarket and
work in Toronto (Hwy 404 and Sheppard). I can meet you in either
location. I'm not going to ship it. U.S. hams: I'll be happy to meet
you in Niagara Falls, Ontario, the border crossing near Gananoque,
Ontario (east end of Lake Ontario) or near Windsor, Ontario (let's say
London, OK?).

73 and thanks for your time,

[Elecraft] For Sale: Palm Radio Mini-Paddle

2011-07-19 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Folks,

I have for sale one Palm 817 Mini-Paddle. This is a very nice, small
(1" x 1" x 3") paddle perfect for portable use. The Palm 817 is black
to match a Yaesu FT-817 and come with a snap on magnetic base so it will
stick to an FT-817's cabinet. Elecraft cabinets are aluminum so it
won't stick, but that means you can remove the base and then the package
is even smaller and lighter!

Read about it and see it here: http://www.mtechnologies.com/palm/

Comes complete with:
- Paddle
- Quick mount and magnets
- Cable with 1/8 inch plug
- Instruction booklet
- Box. Mine didn't come with a carrying case but I still have the
cardboard box it came in. The paddle is darn near indestructible when
retracted into its metal housing.

The paddle is in very good condition but is made for users with a light
touch...not ham-fisted lids like me!

They currently retail for U.S. $109.95. Then subtract $12 for the
travel case I don't have and call it $97.95 plus shipping from the
website above. Elecraft sells them too but I couldn't locate the price
on their website.

I'll sell mine for U.S. $75.00, which includes shipping anywhere in
Canada and the U.S.A.. Pay by Paypal or money order (or personal cheque
if you don't mind waiting for it to clear).

Many thanks,

Ken Alexander

[Elecraft] For Sale: Buddistick Deluxe Portable Antenna System

2011-07-19 Thread Ken Alexander
I have a Buddistick Deluxe Package for sale. See it on the Buddipole
website at:
http://www.buddipole.com/buddistick-dlx-pkg.html

The package includes the following:

- Clamp for attaching to table or other objects
- Two 6-foot telescoping whips
- Two antenna arms
- Loading coil with a total of four moveable coil taps and a few extra knobs
- Base plate
- 31 foot Teflon coated counterpoise wire with hand reel
- Also comes with the optional mini-tripod (this is a small photographic
type tripod ($24 option), NOT the the model Buddipole sell on their
Antenna Accessories page for $85)
- Padded carrying case. An official W3FF Antennas bag, but not as shown
on the website.
- Instruction sheet

The antenna works very well, just add some coax and you have a complete
portable antenna system! Everything is in very good condition.

The system with optional tripod sells for U.S. $175 + $24 = $199 (plus
shipping) on the Buddipole website. I will sell for U.S. $130.00, which
includes shipping anywhere in Canada or the U.S.A. Contact me off the
list if interested.

Many thanks,

Ken Alexander

Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] On the trail with the KX1 -- Antenna ?

2011-06-17 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Phil,

I assume you have the built-in autotuner.  If so, a 24 ft wire with a few
counterpoise wires has been recommended here before.  I have used this with
great success with my KX1 and worked Seychelles with 2 watts on battery power
with the 24 ft wire strung out to a nearby tree and the two 8 ft counterpoise
wires laying on my shack floor.  This was the high point in my ham career!

The antenna is very light and compact, too.

Laying your wires on the rocky ground is probably the best you can hope to do
without lugging more stuff with you.  After all, if you're at 8000 ft...that's
got to count for something!

This summer I plan to take my KX1 in my backpack on some of our summer hikes in
the Cascades.  Previously, I have only taken my HT but that is not too bad from
the 8000 foot level of Mt. Rainier.

So, I am wondering about an antenna.  Part of the problem is that often we are
above the tree line.  No trees.  Has anyone operated in that situation.  What
do you do when there are no trees to use for elevating a wire?

Also, a slightly different question -- does anyone use a counterpoise of any
sort when using a single wire antenna?  Have you thrown another wire along the
ground to create a kind of ground plane or does this not make that much
difference.

Re: [Elecraft] Is the KX3 going to be sold as a kit?

2011-06-03 Thread Ken Alexander
Wayne (or maybe it was Eric) already announced that the KX3 would be available
as a no-solder "final assembly" type of kit, or fully assembled, just like the
K3.

I already have two Softrock receiver kits that I've just about given up on
because of multiple problems trying to install surface mount components.
Something as complex as a KX3 would have me in tears before I finished
unpacking it!!

And by the way, if anyone here has experience with Softrock kits and could
complete my kits for a modest fee, I'd be interested in hearing from you.

Another issue is the attrition that occurs when attempting an SMD kit.  For
this reason, many SMD kits are either not started, or they're abandoned
shortly after commencement of construction.  I've purchased several SMD kits
on the used market where perhaps 5% of the kit is completed, and some have
been poorly constructed.

In the case of a kit like a KX3 that involves many SMD parts, it would
undoubtedly lead to many unfinished kits and some very unhappy customers,
most of whom are not good with personal due-diligence.  Even though that
onus is on the buyer to find what they're up against before the purchase,
some people will resent the kit supplier when they're left with a box full
of some very expensive parts and few takers who are willing to finish a
previously-started kit at a fair price.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - Why so much Off topic??

2011-05-26 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Dave,

The rules regarding posting aren't restricted entirely to Elecraft products.
Frankly, there are too many smart people on the reflector to waste their talent
on only one subject.

That said, the Elecraft reflector is my e-mail software's most heavily filtered
folder.  I think I currently have 8 filters set up to minimize noise on topics
I'm not interested in.  In fact, as much as I'm excited to learn about the KX3,
a KX3 filter will be going up very shortly so I don't have to wade through the
endless speculation and wish list submissions about the thing!

Long story short:  it's worth sticking around, but you might want to look into
ways of managing the traffic.

Guys

I am new to this reflector; but am already considering quitting.

Having just gotten a K3, I was hoping to see it as a source of useful info
// advice, that I will undoubtedly need in the weeks ahead.

Of course the reflector is for more than just the K3; and I can see the
Euphoria surrounding the Latest offerings from Elecraft.

However, there seems too much traffic that is well off topic ( and I am
sorry, 6m conditions, Pacemakers etc are point in case!)

Who regulates the reflector; is there any attempt to reinforce some
discipline or am I just to accept that I just can't cope with wading through
another 100 plus emails a day ??

I didn't read where it says you contacted Elecraft to discuss this with them.
Did you take this up with them before posting here? If not, then it seems a
little unfair to complain publicly before giving them a chance to resolve the
problem for you.

When you purchase technology you get what's available at the time. The K3 is a
snapshot of the best that was available when they designed it. Same with the
K3X. Don't fault them for looking around and finding something better. If the
new DSP chip happens to be a pin-for-pin, drop-in replacement for the existing
chip then maybe you'll get lucky. We'll see.

They probably don't deserve the criticism either. If you bought a new Chevy
with a 200 hp engine, and the next year they'd managed to tweak another 20 hp
out of the same engine would you take your car back to the dealer and demand
they replace the engine for you?

[Elecraft] KX3 Pricing

With the base model K3 starting at $1500 it seems to me the basic 5/10W KX3

Re: [Elecraft] AF-1 For Sale or Trade

2011-03-30 Thread Ken Alexander
Hi Ron,

I did notice the peaking effect, but I didn't think the improvement was all
that profound.  Also, the effect of the low pass filter is barely noticeable on
the K2.  I sent an e-mail to tech support at Elecraft and was told to use it
with a receiver with a wider audio bandwidth.

I considered that a non-answer, but after thinking more I realized what they
were saying was that the K2's audio was already pretty narrow so I shouldn't
expect much.  They hint at that in their description of the AF-1 on their
website.  I think the AF-1 would be much more effective overall when used with
a "lesser" receiver.  For my ear, the K2 doesn't seem to need the help.

[Elecraft] AF-1 For Sale or Trade

2011-03-29 Thread Ken Alexander
I have a newly built AF-1 audio filter for sale. It comes installed in the
beautiful Lexan cabinet custom made by Dave, W8FGU. Photo of the AF-1 in
cabinet can be viewed on Dave's website at:

http://w8fgu.home.comcast.net/~w8fgu/af1encl.html

I built the AF-1 a few months ago and it works as advertised. I just find that
the filters in my K2 are so good that the additional filtering the AF-1
provides isn't really needed.

U.S. $75.00 includes the AF-1, battery, cabinet, AF-1 manual and shipping to
anywhere in North America. I'll ship overseas but will have to get back to you
with the postage rate first. Paypal or money order please.

I'm in the market for an Elecraft W-1 wattmeter, so if you have one and are
interested in an AF-1 then maybe we can work out a trade. Or if you just want
to sell your W-1 then please get in touch with me.

73 and thanks,

Ken Alexander

Agreed. It would have to be a selectable option because there are many reasons
not to use it. DXers would find it most useful.

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] KR3 SW Receiver.

2011-03-17 Thread Ken Alexander
My AOR AR-7030+ was over $3000 when I bought it in 2000, and it was worth every
penny.

There are other receivers by Ten-Tec and a few others that are more than that.
Some are sold to serious SWLs but I imagine most go to the government. I think
most serious listeners these days are using SDRs like the Perseus

The K3 would need mediumwave and longwave (down to 100 kHz) coverage to be of
interest to me and the listeners I hang out with.

Re: [Elecraft] I did it again!

2011-03-17 Thread Ken Alexander
Stick with me on this for a sec...

One of the features I like about N1MM Logger (and I'm sure others do it too) is
that if you don't make contact with a guy who's call you entered into the
logger Logger will clear the entry window and place his call on the band map
once you have tuned 300 Hz off his frequency.

How about adding a feature to the firmware such that if you do or don't work a
split QSO the split setup is turned off as soon as you tune more than 300 Hz
away from him? Pick any number of Hz you like but you get the idea.

Just a thought

Re: [Elecraft] Maxwell's Equations.

2011-03-06 Thread Ken Alexander
I only know of three Maxwells. One had a silver hammer, one was a spy who
talked into his shoe, and the third made coffee with a guy named House
(possibly related to the doctor on TV).

I've got a loonie (Canadian dollar coin) that says it's an L/C meter in a
package that size. The world doesn't need another DVM and it's too small to be
a scope!
