[Elecraft] K3 RIT tuning rate
Dear OM Mark K1RX, The tuning rate of the K3 RIT/XIT basically follows the rate of the main VFO. Here are a few comments from one version of the operating manual: VFOs and RIT/XIT • RATE {21} selects 10 or 50 Hz VFO/RIT tuning. See VFO menu entries, pg. 57. • FINE {21} selects 1-Hz steps. COARSE selects large steps (MAIN menu, VFO CRS). FINE Select 1 Hz tuning for both VFOs and RIT/XIT offset VFO CRS Per-mode Per-mode coarse tuning rate (hold COARSE and tune VFO A or B). Tap 1 to turn rounding on/off. Also applies to the RIT/XIT tuning knob if CONFIG:VFO OFS is set to ON, and both RIT and XIT are turned OFF. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] USB-RS232 cable
Dear OM Peter MØRYB, The adapter cable you describe is still available from Elecraft. Go to https://elecraft.com/pages/parts-mod-kits and search for KUSB. Its price is currently USD 42.95 plus shipping. Alternatively, attached is a picture of my KUSB hardware and a scan of its specs shown on the packaging that I received in 2011 from Elecraft. It is not merely a cable; it contains a critical chipset. Some adapter cables use the Prolific chipset, some of which will not work properly with the K3. As you can see at the lower right of the attached scan, the FTDI chipset is recommended by Elecraft, and it appears to work well. My KUSB from Elecraft came with a driver CD, but that was outdated; the manufacturer's website furnished a current driver. I didn't get much use out of the KUSB because my Windows 7 computer (which had a serial and parallel port adapter card installed) turned out to function appropriately with the K3 after I found that there is a serial port setting for more accuracy versus more speed (see third attachment). This setting, accessible only to Administrators, defaults to more speed and made for lots of errors when updating K3 firmware. Moving the slider left to "Low" allowed me to use a simple double-DB9 cable for the rest of the Win 7 computer's life. But this only applies if the computer has a serial port. [Elecraft] going back in time with the K1
The K1's main tuning rate is partially determined by the choice of tuning range, with the wider range obviously requiring a faster tuning rate for complete traversal. The K1 manual indicates that RF board capacitor C2 determines the main tuning range, with C2 = 120 pF yielding about 150 kHz of range and C2 = 68 pF yielding about 80 kHz of range. Both capacitors were supplied with the kit. There was an official Elecraft mod for the K1 to eliminate the variation in the main tuning rate from one end to the other of its range, but I skipped that mod because the variation didn't bother me. RIT/XIT tuning range and rate is determined by the R4/R3/R5 voltage divider on the front panel board. Increasing equally the values of fixed resistors R4 and R5 will reduce both incremental tuning range and rate. (Obviously, it's easier to replace the fixed resistors than the pot.) A value of R4 = R5 = 47K will result in an RIT/XIT tuning range of about 1 kHz, with resulting slower tuning. On the other hand, this range isn't enough for DX split-frequency operating, so DXers may prefer some value between 47K and the stock but touchy 10K. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K1 Question
Tony K2MO asked: I noticed that the VFO on my 4-band K1 doesn't tune above 14062 and 21061.0 yet it tunes to 7068.6 on 40 meters. The tuning range on 30 meters is 85 kHz (10077 to 10162) so I'm assuming the rig had the smaller tuning range crystal installed. Tuning range on 40 meters is: 6986 to 7068.6. So the question is: how can I shift the tuning range on 20 and 15 meters so I can tune above 062 and 061 on 14 and 21 MHz? The current tuning range is 13077 to 14062 on 20 meters and 20976 to 21061.0 on 15 meters. I recommend that you download the K1 manual if you don't have one for your rig: https://ftp.elecraft.com/K1/Manuals%20Downloads/E740016%20K1%20manual%20rev%20J.pdf On page 38 of this manual is the information that you need. First, the size of the tuning range is set by the choice of capacitor C2 on the RF board. This also affects the tuning rate and possibly the drift rate. Second, the lower end of the tuning range is set by squeezing or spreading the turns on the big toroid L1. I think that the VFO tunes backward (K1 output up as VFO down), so you may want to squeeze the turns. But read the manual to be sure. Keep in mind that page 38 of the manual is part of the assembly instructions; you may need to remove some parts of the K1 (like the band module) before adjusting L1. Or maybe you can tweak L1 a bit, then check the effect on the K1's output frequencies and repeat. Third, per-band differences in output frequencies result from differences in the frequencies of the crystals on the band module from their nominal values. I believe that these are unavoidable. If you want to cover the bottom edge of each band, your measurements suggest that 40 meters is the band to watch. If that's not a concern, you may be able to move the frequency coverages up more than 14 kHz. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] ID a small board
The K3 is a QRP rig with a KPA3 100W option. Without the KPA3, the K3's low-power amplifier becomes its final amplifier instead of being the KPA3's driver. I have the board you describe in front of me. Mine is 41 mm by 9mm. The board is intended to pass the output of the low-power amplifier to the antenna in case the KPA3 is not part of the K3. It is not used in a K3 that has the KPA3. The 12V Sense Mod 1N4148 is a mod to the KPA3 and is unrelated to the bypass module. [Elecraft] K3 Problem, VFO Noise While Rotating On 10 Meters
Based on the description of your rig, you have the original synthesizer(s). The noise mod involved adding some resistors and diodes to the K3 main board at specific spots and making some firmware adjustments. On the assumption that you have the resistors and diodes already, per your description of your K3 vintage, here are the firmware comments from the mod instructions: ** IMPORTANT: You must install the resistors and diodes as described above before changing the bus clock rate. Failure to do so will result in erratic behavior of your K3. 1. Download and install firmware revision 3.24 or later. Refer to the K3 software page for instructions. 2. IMPORTANT: Locate the CONFIG:VCO MD menu entry, and tap the 1 keypad switch until you see SPI 2; this selects the new bus clock rate. (The default setting is SPI 1.) * I will email you the mod instructions separately so that you can see where the resistors and diodes should be (although Elecraft may have relocated them in later production). Then you can proceed with the CONFIG setting. 73, Paul W8TM [Elecraft] K3 Problem, VFO Noise While Rotating On 10 Meters Randy w9zr at aol.com Wed May 19 06:46:18 EDT 2021 When I tune the VFO knob on 10 meters I hear a scratching type noise. My K3 1322 has an original KAT3 and firmware 5.38 2.86 1.25. Last night I tried to use the LCSET feature of the KAT3 item on the Configuration menu. I have used this successfully in the past, but no luck this time. I was able to make the L and C values show on the display, but rotating the VFO knobs changed the values on the *previous* display. I could hear VFO A start to test relays as I rotated it to the right, and once I found myself changing the date after rotating VFO B and then A while the unchanged L and C values showed on the display. Exiting from LCSET did not seem to go correctly either. In order to return the KAT3 to Auto, I had to fully exit and re-enter the Configuration menu. [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 5.26 and CONFIG:EXT ALC
My K3 serial number is 1322; it is of 2008 vintage. I loaded beta 5.26 firmware because I installed a newly purchased KXV3B transverter/preamp board. Today I noticed that new firmware version 5.29 was available. When I read the release notes, it looked like the release would not affect my old K3, only newly minted K3S rigs. But when I checked CONFIG:EXT ALC under version 5.26, I found the setting to be ON t-5.5. I changed this to OFF t-4.0, the default according to the K3 manual. (Numeric keypad 1 toggles between ON and OFF, although the manual isn't specific.) Then I cycled the power on my K3, a normal shutdown and startup. Sadly, CONFIG:EXT ALC was back to ON t-5.5. At that point, I decided that I had better install firmware version 5.29. After its installation, I found the default CONFIG:EXT ALC setting, which persisted after power cycling. This is my preferred setting, as I have nothing capable of more than 100 watts. I also tested my K3 to see if version 5.29 would incorrectly reset a non-default CONFIG:EXT ALC back to the default after power cycling, but that problem did not occur. Anyone who has loaded firmware version 5.26 would do well to replace it with version 5.29 and then to check CONFIG:EXT ALC for his preferred value. Incidentally, I also looked at CONFIG:ADC REF, which I vaguely recalled setting some time back. It showed the non-default value 4.94 under both firmware versions 5.26 and 5.29, which caused me no concern. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K1 Power Out vs. Current Draw
Wayne N6KR has addressed the matter of K1 transmit efficiency in his note at http://www.elecraft.com/TechNotes/k1_battery_op.htm Wayne's formula shows the most efficient power setting as a function of supply voltage. It's easy to remember: square the supply voltage and divide by 25. Basically, impedances need to be matched at DC in for greatest DC efficiency, just as they do at RF out for greatest RF efficiency. As the battery voltage decreases, the optimal K1 power setting will also decrease, but quadratically--not linearly. The voltage that should be used in the calculations is that displayed by the K1, that is, after reduction for the loss in the polarity-protection diode. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 temperatures?
Sam K5OAI sed: room temp 27.7 F Unless the room is in an igloo, he probably meant 27.7C = 82F. Good temperature benchmarks to keep in mind are: (a) 20C = 68F is normal room temperature; and (b) 37C = 98.6F is normal body temperature. Naturally, the K3 temperatures will be higher than the ambient temperature, as the K3 dissipates part of the energy coming into it from the PS. The K3's PA fans are designed to run unless the PA temperature is 36C or less, so the PA temperature will tend toward 36C unless the room is cool. In a warm room, 36C is a pretty normal PA temperature reading. In a warm room there *may* be nothing wrong with an FP temperature of 41C after much idling. With a receive current drain of 1.5A, the K3 is dissipating 20W continuously. Of course, the PA fans don't directly cool the front panel. [Elecraft] [K1} Filter Board Issue/ Rapid pulse receiver noise
Check to be sure that you have set the correct 30-meter band edge (10.0 or 10.1, depending on your chosen VFO range). See the manual's instructions for setting the Bx parameters. Some years ago I had a problem similar to your first one. It turned out to be a defective pair of relay contacts on my 4-band board. Lacking suitable tools for removal of the relay, I sent the board back to Elecraft for replacement of the defective relay. To diagnose this situation, set up the K1 so that you are having the low sensitivity/output problem on 30 meters. Then shut off the K1 without changing bands, remove the 4-band module carefully and measure the resistance across every pair of relay contacts (not the coils, just the contacts). Of course, every pair should read either infinite or zero ohms. In my case, one pair read about 50 ohms--that relay was the culprit in need of replacement. An e-mail to support at elecraft.com got me permission to return the board for repair. 73 es GL, Paul W8TM Quinton NU7Y sed: I have a K1 with the 4 band filter board (40,30,20,15). I recently removed this board and tested a two filter board (80,17) that had come with this radio. The second board worked fine but the problem I have is that when I replaced the original filter board and reconfigured the band settings, something changed and the received signals on 30 meters are very weak and seem to be heavily attenuated and the transmitter will only load to .1 watt. The problem is specific to 30 meters only as the other bands are working properly. I have checked the pins on the filter board and they seem to be o.k. I inspected the board and don't see any components that could have been moved or damaged. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I am going to replace the BNC with a UHF (mounted on the enclosure) and maybe do something different with the balanced line connectors. My questions are: Can I enclose it in a die cast aluminum box or should I use plastic? Will there be any effect RF wise using metal, besides shielding? Be sure also to consider heat. The ferrites in my BL2 (mounted at the K3 output) get quite hot at times. In warm weather or during a contest, I have a fan blowing on the BL2. I believe that rated BL2 insertion loss is for transformation of 50 ohms to 50/200 ohms (depending on the switch setting). Rarely does ladder line present either 50 or 200 ohms resistive, so actual insertion losses (heating) are greater than rated. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 Display Frequency Calibration
It appears that the folks who can't hear the wow-wow zero beat note are failing to turn on SPOT as specified in the K3 Owner's Manual for Method 2. Zero-beating the SPOT sidetone against the signal doesn't require hearing low tones, only hearing the amplitude modulation (wow-wow) of the sidetone as zero beat is approached. The variation in amplitude is easily heard; it sounds just like severe QSB or picket fencing. The procedure works best if the monitor sidetone (SPOT) level is set about as loud as the comparison WWV signal, using the front-panel MON control. I frequently find it necessary to turn SPOT back on as I tweak my Ref Osc. For whatever reason, SPOT often turns itself off, at least for me. 73, Paul W8TM Eric WA6HHQ sed: Is your RX EQ set to roll off lower freqs? [Elecraft] K3-PWR knob
Phillippe A65BI asked: Is it possible to increase the speed of the the PWR knob ? I believe that the answer is no. However, you can instead define a few simple macros like pc000; pc070; pc005; pc100; and assign each to a front-panel key. I think that the K3 Utility is the easiest way to set up macros (see its Help file). Of course, you can choose your own favorite power levels. In my case, I assigned the first above macro to M3 tap, the second to M3 hold, the third to M4 tap and the last to M4 hold. Then I can select any of the four powers with a single key tap (or hold). Tweaks to nearby power levels could then be accomplished via a small turn of the power knob. Unfortunately, keys assigned to macros can't also be used for CW or voice memories. So there are limitations to this approach. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 cooling fan cycling
The fans that cool the K3's 100-watt amplifier are thermostatically controlled. All thermostats have a temperature spread so that they do not cycle on and off constantly; for example, a thermostat might be set to turn on a cooling fan at 38 and off at 35. I would like to suggest that consideration be given to expanding the K3's spread between turn-on and turn-off temperatures to reduce fan cycling. This might be accomplished by allowing the operator to choose from a range of spreads (say, 1 degree to 5 degrees) in the Configuration menu. Presumably, the spread would adjust the turn-on temperature upward rather than adjusting the turn-off temperature downward, as the turn-off temperature should not be less than the ambient temperature. Those who are bothered by fan cycling could then choose a larger spread to reduce the problem. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 cooling fan cycling
There are indeed two ways to eliminate fan cycling. K2AV suggests one approach, to run the fans all the time. Another approach is to run QRP all the time. Neither of those extremities appeals to me. The K3 necessarily has a temperature spread (which seems to be small) between fan-on and fan-off temperatures. I am merely suggesting that this spread be increased. If designer options are a concern, the current unadjustable spread could simply be increased to a greater, but still unadjustable, spread. As I understand it, the K3's final transistors are quite robust with regard to temperature. The thermal Achilles heel of the K3 appears to be the amplifier's multipin connector, at least according to other posts. The fans don't seem to be able to cool that connector adequately. Less fan cycling will neither solve nor exacerbate that problem. 73, Paul W8TM *** K2AV sed: If cycling bothers you try setting CONFIG:KPA3 to FAN1 or FAN2. I have a desktop running Win 7/64 and a FTDI KUSB. But when I looked per W4TV's note below, I couldn't find Power Management. [Elecraft] Reference Oscillator Calibration Method 3
Implementation of Method 3 would improve the stability of all K3s, not only those with the optional TCXO. Calculation of a drift-correction table via repeated Method 1 or 2 calibrations (as the K3 warms up) can be performed by the owner for any reference oscillator, whether stock or optional. The drift-correction table could then be input to Method 3, decreasing drift regardless of the type of reference oscillator. 73, Paul W8TM *** Wayne N6KR sed: At present, method 3 remains unimplemented. Fortunately the TCXO's uncorrected drift is already less than +/- 0.5 PPM from 0 to 50 C. [Elecraft] APF and Normalized Filter Passband Display
I SAVed CW NORM2 to include APF. Now rotating the SHIFT control doesn't remove the wings from the filter passband graphic, as it would without APF. Thus it isn't possible to tell from the display if the filter is still normalized to NORM2. Is this intended? 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] APF and Normalized Filter Passband Display
Recalling NORM2 changes the APF shift back to its normalized setting. [Elecraft] K3 Internal Keyer vs. Straight Key
There are various ways for a computer to key a rig. (1) From the computer's parallel port, using a transistor/resistor combination to translate parallel-port levels to typical +5 volt straight-keying line level. The cable runs from the parallel port to the rig's straight-key jack. (2) From the computer's serial port, using a similar transistor/resistor combination, again to the straight-key input jack. This is NR4C's situation. (3) In the case of the K3 only, from the computer's serial port to the K3's RS232 input, using a straight-through cable just like the one used for firmware updates. In case (1) or (2), if the rig uses one jack for both straight-key and paddle input, that jack must be set for straight keying when the computer is plugged into it. This is the situation when I computer-key my K1. If the rig has separate jacks for straight key and paddle, or if your computer program provides for it, the paddle can be used simultaneously with the computer program to key the rig. This is convenient when the computer gets snarled during a contest. In case (3), the K3 CONFIG menu must be set to key via the serial cable, as Don Wilhelm noted. I computer-key my K3 this way. Methods (1) and (2) work with any rig, although you might need an adapter if the rig uses grid-block or cathode keying, where the voltages/currents are out of the range of the little transistor/resistor combination. For example, I computer-key my Heathkit SB-401 (about 20 volts negative) using (1) and an optoisolator IC. As far as I know, method (3) is unique to the K3. But I'm not familiar with the no-front-panel software-defined rigs, so maybe they have similar inputs. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KSYN3 mod techniques
I'm considering the best way to approach the mods to my KSYN3 board. Doing nothing or buying a second receiver are possibilities (the second receiver's up-to-date KSYN3 could be installed as the main one). But if I decide to mod my KSYN3 without spending a lot, a question arises. Left over from an earlier mod kit K3AFMDKT I have two SMD and two axial-lead 51-ohm resistors. In the instructions for installation of K3AFMDKT http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/K3_AF_Stage_Upgrade_Instructions_Rev_B.pdf two possibilities are listed for paralleling the 51-ohm added resistors with the SMD resistors already present: (1) stacking the added SMD resistors on top of the ones already present; and (2) adding axial-lead resistors. Pictures of the two approaches are on page 10 of that pdf. The instructions for the most recent KSYN3 mod http://www.elecraft.com/K3/mods/KSYN3%20DDS%20Gain%20Modification.pdf mention only the second of these two possibilities for paralleling a new 51-ohm resistor with the resistor already present on the KSYN3 board. Is there some reason why the SMD-stacking approach cannot be used on KSYN3? I was pleased with the neat appearance of the previous stackings. The axial-lead resistors in the K3AFMDKT were specified to be 1/4 watt, so may be too big for use in the most recent KSYN3 mod, which requires 1/8 watt, probably for clearance. So I'm really asking if I need to get a new axial resistor, or can I use the SMD I already have--if I decide to mod my KSYN3. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

The combined shipping wasn't a lot more than the Manual alone, which is obviously available only from Elecraft. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 frequency accuracy versus displayed precision
The K3 is capable of displaying frequencies to 1 Hz. It can be calibrated to somewhat less than 1 Hz against WWV (method 2). Because I wanted to see if my K3 serial 1322 was capable of measuring frequency to its displayed precision, I decided to attempt the November 11/12 ARRL Frequency Measuring Test. I warmed up my K3 for about two hours because--even with the optional TCXO--my K3 drifts almost 0.1 ppm per degree Centigrade from 25C to 30C, the latter part of its warmup range this time of year at my QTH. (0.1 ppm is almost 1 Hz on 40 meters.) Then I carefully used method 2 to calibrate against 10 MHz WWV, checking after exiting REF CAL by tuning across WWV on CW with SPOT activated to see that the beat notes were similar on each side of zero beat for 1 and 2 Hz off frequency. (A lack of similarity indicates that a small tweak of REF CAL is needed.) Tuning past WWV's carrier on CW with SPOT enabled also provides practice for the real thing. When W1AW (and each of the other FMT stations) began its call-up, I tuned its frequency to be centered in the passband with the DSP set at 50 Hz bandwidth. When the long dashes began, I turned on SPOT and zero-beated against the sidetone with 1 Hz fine tuning. After recording the result, I moved on to the other frequencies and stations that had been specified in the ARRL FMT announcement. I was able to copy and measure 4 of the 5 tests, with one station on one frequency being inaudible at my QTH. Result: my K3 was within 1 Hz on all 4 readings, that is, its accuracy matched its displayed precision--after warmup and careful calibration. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [Elecraft_K3] K3 switch macro ideas?
K9VUJ sed: * I'd like to be able to turn on the monitor without having to adjust the monitor level up then down when I'm finished. When I forget and leave the monitor level at say 27 and push hold the monitor control I get feedback from the speaker when I transmit in SSB mode, requiring me to go back and set level to zero. * I haven't run into this problem. I suspect that it has an easier solution than a switch macro. Try adjusting the AntiVOX setting to prevent feedback from the speaker from getting into the transmit audio. It may do the job even if you don't use VOX. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 macro M4 tap/hold
I have just updated my K3 Utility and Firmware to 1.2.10.27 and 3.52, respectively. I wrote two simple macros, which I put into the Utility's Macro1 and Macro2 spots. They are: Pwr=4 pc004; and Pwr=100 pc100; These are intended to save wear and tear on the encoder when switching to and from QRP. In the K3's MACRO CONFIG menu item, I assigned Macro1 to M3H (M3 hold) and Macro2 to M4H (M4 hold) But I now find that either tapping or holding M3 or M4 executes a macro. Should this be? BTW, I had previously filled in both banks of CW memories M1 - M4 with short messages, and didn't bother to erase them. I now find that either in Bank 1 or in Bank 2, pressing M3 or M4 results in macro execution. M1 and M2 continue to produce the assigned CW, differently in Bank 1 and Bank 2, as intended. In general, I find the procedure for accessing messages and macros with M1 - M4 to be confusing. As I understand it, holding a message M4 should (and did, before macroing) repeat the message on CW, while it is necessary to hold REC before being able to access the other message M4. On the other hand, accessing the second group of 4 macros should proceed merely by holding M buttons. Which result should holding M4 produce, if a macro is assigned to M4H while a Bank 1 message is assigned to M4T? Repeated message, or macro execution? 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 macro M4 tap/hold
Wayne sed: When you assign an Mx switch to a macro (or as a menu shortcut), the firmware checks to see if that Mx switch now has *both* tap and hold functions assigned. If not, it sets both of them to the same assignment (the macro or the menu shortcut). This avoids some potential side effects. You can always assign both tap and hold functions to a single Mx switch at any time. An Mx switch that is assigned to a macro or a menu shortcut is temporarily unavailable for message play. To restore it to message play, select CW mode, then tap Mx, tap REC, then tap Mx again. It will now function for message play in both CW/DATA and voice modes (if you have the DVR). *** Thank you for that explanation. After a bit of thought, I have realized that it implies that a pair of toggle macros, such as I created to switch to and from QRP, ought to be both assigned to the same Mx switch (one to tap, one to hold), rather than to two different Mx switches. So I have now assigned my two macros to M4T and M4H and am happy with the result. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 firmware 2 years on and still much to do
EI6IZ sed: * If you look at the sheet that came with your TCXO you might notice that it does a good deal better than 0.5ppm without any calibration over the temperature range that your radio goes through during operation. The TCXO in my k3 is better than 0.5ppm over the temp range -10C to +50C. My Front panel temp as measured by the K3 is always around 37-40 C and does not vary much you mileage may vary but the K3 with the TCXO already comfortably exceeds 0.5ppm without the additional calibration. (which is coming.) Therefore the K3 does not 'fail' to meet the 0.5ppm spec at present * EI6IZ apparently had good luck with his particular TCXO. My TCXO data sheet says, in part: -10.00 -.39 0.00 -.25 10.00 -.03 19.99.05 29.98.29 40.02.60 50.00.73 As can be seen, my TCXO barely meets the 1 ppm spec from 0C to 50C, as .73 - (-.25) = .98, but would fail that spec if measured from -10C to 50C. So my particular TCXO does no better than its 1 ppm spec, and does not achieve 0.5 ppm stability until it warms up to its operating temperature, near body temperature (which is 37C). While it is warming up, from room temperature at about 20C to operating temperature at about 40C, my TCXO varies .60 - .05 = .55 ppm, more drift than 0.5 ppm even during warmup in a typical house. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Notch Performance in FW 3.25
Today I did a comparison of notch and autonotch in FW 3.25. K3 serial 1322, FW 3.25. Heterodyne source a 50 microV signal generator on about 7040 kHz. Mode LSB, tuned off about 1300 Hz from the carrier to give a target for the notch. NB and NR off, AGC-S, DSP and roofing 2.1 kHz. After establishing an audio level AFV with the signal gen running, I switched to the dBV display. Turning on the autonotch changed the audio tone by -23.4 dBV, while using the manual notch (after adjusting its frequency for maximum effect) changed the audio tone by -49.4 dBV. Thus the autonotch does work in FW 3.25, but not as well as the manual notch. It is worth mentioning that actual notch effects will differ by less than the 26 dB that this experiment produced, due to the presence of noise and the desired signal. And YMMV due (among other things) to AGC parameters. Nevertheless, the manual notch is noticeably better than the autonotch in ordinary listening on SSB. Because I didn't perform this experiment with any earlier versions of FW, I can't say whether this difference is new or not. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] ERR TXG
VE2SHF sed: One think worth mentioning: I had to apply significant pressure on the three transistors mounted on LPA board when I installed the lower bottom panel because the transistors raised slightly above the bottom panel level. I don't know if it is normal (ensure good thermal contact?) or if I used the wrong screws somewhere. When I assembled my K3, merely having the bottom panel too close to the band stop circuit board was enough to cause me repeated ERR TXG messages, particularly when the weight of the 100W module pushed the board closer to the bottom panel. The band stop board is about the size of a postage stamp, hanging down from the bottom of the main RF board. But in your case, you have already noticed a bigger mechanical problem than I had. I suggest that you contact K3 Support at k3supp...@elecraft.com and describe the mechanical problem you noticed, as above. Your need to force on the bottom panel may well be the cause of the ERR TXG. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Looking for a good battery/charging system for K1
Before you reach a decision on battery packs, be sure to read Wayne's Tech Note at http://www.elecraft.com/TechNotes/k1_battery_op.htm Basically, the principle of impedance matching applies to both input and output of a rig. A DC input mismatch results in waste heat, which is usually not a problem unless the DC is in limited supply, e.g., from a battery. My particular K1 tends to drift a bit more when its regulators have to dissipate extra DC input voltage as heat. The second regulators in the K1 put out about 6.3V, so an input of 14.3V results in twice as much wasted voltage in the regulators as an input of 10.3V, i.e., four times as much wasted heat to cause more drift. For battery supplies, I prefer packs of 8 AA NiMH cells. Alternatively, I use a variable AC supply which I set to 10V (plus an extra 0.3V that doesn't make it to the K1's voltmeter). Either of these supplies matches my preferred 4W output setting fairly well, according to Wayne's note. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [K3] K3 3.04 Power Output After Tune
During the WPX SSB contest I have noticed the same low output that others have noticed after ATU TUNE. I just wanted to add one comment. After low output is remedied with TUNE, the firmware seems to remember that fact. That is, when I return to that vicinity after SP QSOs elsewhere (ATU flashes), the output seems OK. TUNE doesn't seem necessary unless ATU TUNE has just been used to reduce SWR. 73, Paul W8TM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 TCXO 1 ppm option
A recent query about the calibration process for the KTCX03-1 1 ppm TCXO option prompted me to compare my TCXO data sheet with the (yet to be implemented) Reference Oscillator Method 3 procedure in the Owner's Manual. It became apparent that the procedure in the Manual does not support the data that accompanied my TCXO. I received a table of frequency deltas at 5-degree Celsius intervals of temperature. Abridged for possible operating temperatures, it is: Temp Ppm 5 -.17 10-.03 15 .01 20 .05 250.00 30 .29 35 .56 40 .60 45 .71 Obviously, interpolation is necessary. Piecewise-linear interpolation (linear between the two nearest tabular points) would seem appropriate, particularly because other procedures might result in interpolated values outside the range of those in the table, due to unexpected data points like the local minimum at 25 degrees in my table. (I'm still wondering about that local minimum.) After interpolation, the oscillator frequency could be adjusted by multiplying by ( 1 - Ppm/100 ) to compensate for drift. This could be implemented by multiplying the displayed value set by Method 1 or 2 for CONFIG:REF CAL from the (unchanged) displayed value to a corrected value for use in later K3 calculations. With this approach, a default table of zeroes at all temperatures would continue to work for those not having the TCXO option. The Reference Oscillator calibration procedure would consist of (a) Input the ppm table for the optional TCXO, if you have one. Be sure to input signs and decimals. (b) Set CONFIG:REF CAL by Method 1 or Method 2, as preferred. (CONFIG:REF CAL would set the displayed value *before* adjustment by the factor in the previous paragraph, so that temperature changes would not change the displayed value.) With this procedure, it shouldn't be necessary to do step (b) at any particular temperature. 73, Paul W8TM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 S-meter Mode
When I tried setting K3 CONFIG:SMTR MD to ABS, I found that the S-meter reading then stayed constant regardless of the setting of the preamp/attenuator, in agreement with the Owner's Manual addendum. However, the reading for a 50-microvolt input signal (with the preamp on and attenuator off) falls from S-9 to S-6 as CONFIG:SMTR MD is changed from NOR to ABS. Shouldn't a 50-microvolt input signal produce an S-9 reading regardless of the setting of CONFIG:SMTR MD? Alternatively, the Owner's Manual S-Meter calibration procedure would need to mention the setting of CONFIG:SMTR MD. 73, Paul W8TM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
