Re: [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies
Good morning Don. The PS suddenly died on me at our beach house in Long Beach. I had no equipment there and first assumed it was my K3. Brought the rig home to Portland and it worked fine. So, it was the supply, an Astron RS35A--couple years old. Anyway, checked the fuse, cleaned contacts etc and it was .8v at the terminals. . So, I replaced the voltage IC which I got from Mouser and used Deoxit on the the voltage adjustment pot. I have another RS35A which has run fine for over 30 years. I don't feel comfortable playing around inside a live supply but will take the cover off and do another visual inspection while unplugged. It has to be something simple I would think. thanks Don, Gary W7TEA On Oct 17, 2013, at 5:42 AM, "Don Wilhelm-4 [via Elecraft]" wrote: > You did not show any of the prior information (one of the problems with > posts from Nabble), so I can only guess that you are working with a > power supply problem. > A situation like that is often caused by something loose in the negative > side of the supply, something that is frequently overlooked. > > 73, > Don W3FPR > > On 10/17/2013 1:54 AM, Gary, W7TEA wrote: > > Well, traded out the voltage regulator IC and no joy. Well, traded out the voltage regulator IC and no joy. Then I tried Deoxit on the adjustment pot, tweaked it a bit and measured voltage at 13.8vdc! Great! Re: [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies
Well, I brought the RS35A (over 30 years old I think) and cable from the home QTH to start substituting. First though, I cleaned the cable ends of the offending set up and it tested at 13.8v. I plugged it into the K3 and it fired up. Then I transmitted at low power and started getting feedback in the audio channel and power output on the K3 showed that it was varying when in tune. I turned off the supply and had a bite to eat. When I returned to the shack planning on testing the voltage under power using the VFO B display on the rig, it refused to turn on as did the keyer. I checked the voltage at the PS terminals and it registered 0.8v DC. I took the fuse out, cleaned it good, checked continuity, used Deoxit and still 0.8v DC. Also confirmed that the outlet was 117v AC. Will use my old power supply tomorrow. This power supply is two years old. Guess I'll take it home and start reading up on troubleshooting but would love to hear ideas about what probably went wrong and what to test for. tnx, Gary W7TEA - 73, Gary W7TEA K3 #1001, #5763 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-suddenly-dies-tp7579305p7579795.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Thank you Dick. I will be returning to that QTH with another power supply and cable, deoxit and sandpaper to clean connections. I did turn the offending Astron supply off and on at the switch but didn't unplug it. Would that have been enough to reset the crowbar circuit? This is part of the problem. I'm at another QTH without any equipment so can't measure the voltage on the rig end of the power cable. [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies
Have been away from my K3(#5763)/P3 for a couple months. Hooked it back up yesterday and transmitted on a couple of bands to make sure it was working and the SWR appropriate. All was fine. Today I turned it on and was listening on the bands. I responded to a CQ on CW and caught that the SWR was high after sending two characters but immediately and without an error message the rig died. It won't turn back on. The power supply is on, the power cable is properly connected. The wx was dry yesterday and today it's blowing and raining so water may have gotten in one of the antenna traps. That would explain the high SWR but I thought the rig would shut itself down safely. It is dead. No rx or tx. I've two K3's. My first was #1001 and this is a first for me. Any thoughts? - 73, Gary W7TEA K3 #1001, #5763 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-suddenly-dies-tp7579305.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Another P3 freezes
On several occasions, I have left the K3/P3 on for a few hours to return to a P3 screen which has frozen. Toggling P3 "power" on and off resolved it. Then today, the FixTrack mode froze under the same circumstances. I always use Fixed-Tune mode but it became stuck in Tracking mode. Attempting to select Fixed-Tune in the Menu would not work until after a few reboots of the P3. In the archives I see that K9YC bonded the K3 and P3 chassis and I will try the same. Left my rig for a couple of hours this morning and when I returned, my P3 was no longer reading band signals. [Elecraft] RF gain calibration
Just bought a second K3 and thought I'd check the S meter calibration. Using a XG-2, 50uv read S-7 but before going further I ran the RF gain calibration in the K3 utility. I did it four times. When I chose to "use the signal source" the calibration would conclude and the RF gain control and S meter seemed to operate normally. When I turned the rig off and then back on, the RF gain control became nearly inoperable (full CCW would move S meter only up to S-5). When I chose "use factory default" the calibration seemed to be remembered after restart and the RF gain control worked normally. I was using K3 Utility Mac version 1.4.1.8 I remember a similar situation a few years back but a newer version of the K3 utility addressed it. Is this a known problem? I didn't find any recent posts about it. 73, Gary W7TEA - 73, Gary W7TEA K3 #1001 -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/RF-gain-calibration-tp6778114p6778114.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Spot Tone Level
I've been requesting separate Sidetone and Spot volume controls since my K3 (#1001) was new. My Omni VII has them and it is very convenient. Even though the volumes are identical on the K3, it doesn't seem like it---perhaps because the Spot tone is heard amidst band noise and other signals. Re: [Elecraft] K3: honest question re Audio Peak Filter
The K3 is the first rig I've used in years that I've not run the audio thru an external audio filter. I have owned and used several, often to eliminated hiss and to peak the signal. On the K3 I've often found the AFX feature helps me to copy signals that are challenging otherwise. This morning I was listening on a noisy band to a weak signal with NR engaged and set to 3-2. I turned it off and the signal disappeared in the mud. In fact, if I'd been tuning the band without NR, I would have missed it altogether. I repeated it several times. This was a first for me. 73, Gary W7TEA An APF is a tool that I would like to see on the K3. I liked it on my FT1000D. Different people find different tools useful. Here's three K3 tools that I have not found useful. The noise blanker, the notch filter, and the AFX feature. But they are tools that might come in handy some day and I'm glad I have them. I'd like to have the APF as well. - 73, Gary W7TEA K3 #1001 -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-honest-question-re-Audio-Peak-Filter-tp4237359p4237958.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3: CW feature request
I agree. I've operated CW in USB since 76 and it's hard to change. MacLoggerDX allows for me to tweak this though so if I select a spot, it stays in CW Reverse. I have an additional request though. I would like to be able to adjust the volume of the SPOT and Sidetone independently. Often the SPOT volume is down in the mud when trying to spot a signal amidst the band noise. If I increase the volume, then the sidetone knocks my ears off when I transmit. CW Tune is rather approximate and I tend to get different results if I use auto Spot. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Question about S-Meter Calibration
Grant, on an earlier thread on this general topic Wayne said that SMTR OF and SC may need further tweaking when switching to Abs after first aligning in Nor mode with Pre on. My experience mimics yours. With a 50uv signal and the S meter at S9, Nor OF setting is 30 and Abs setting is at 23. So that's quite a tweak. I prefer Abs, having gotten used to the idea with my Omni VII. I'm not sure why it is recommended that the alignment first occur in Nor mode unless what you and I are seeing is abnormal. It is almost as if the settings are independent except for SC which is 14 in both cases. So, no insight, just a similar experience. Gary W7TEA K3 #1001 So, the S-Meter calibration instructions in the manual indicate that PRE should be on. When calibration is done, that means that a 50uV signal reads S-9 with PRE on .. but about S-7 with PRE off. And then if the mode is changed from Normal to Absolute, a 50uV signal reads S-7 with or without the preamp. Just wondering (maybe I need to RTFM and specs again), why that would be the case, vs. 50uV being S-9 without the preamp. I have always just ignored the instruction manual, and calibrated to S-9 with the preamp off. So a 50uV signal reads S-9 (with or without preamp engaged if the mode is Absolute). Am I screwing something up? Or does it just not matter all that much since (1) it doesn't impact anything other than the bar graph, (2) an S-meter reading is not all that terribly important anyway (I don't run a lab), (3) it's all relative, (4) the P3 is in my future, and (5) all DX or contest exchanges are 5-9 by definition :-) To set the record straight on a related topic -- I posted about an issue with gain calibration using the updated K3UtilityOSX a couple of days ago. Turned out it was apparently nothing more than cockpit error and fat-fingers on my part, which is typical. Dave Fleming and Elecraft support (Gary Surrency) were both very helpful and got me set on the path of truth and light ... Anyone have any insight on the S-meter cal thing? Thanks ... [Elecraft] [K3] RF gain calibration and S meter
Just ran the RF gain calibration with the new Mac K3 Utility and an XG2. I did it a few times because I would get an ERR DSE error message when calibrating the SUB rx on occasion. I then went back and re-calibrated the S meter. I've noticed three things. 1) The rx seems considerably "quieter." The PRE is needed now where I seldom used it before. 2) Turning RF gain to minimum quiets the rx but the S meter only advances to S-5 3) I calibrated the S meter with PRE on and SMTR MD set to normal as Wayne recommended. When I change the MD setting to ABS, the 50uv signal drops to S-6 and cannot be adjusted up to S-9 with SMTR OF. I would appreciate any help here. I'm tempted to go back redo the RF gain calibration using the factory defaults option. -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/RF-gain-calibration-and-S-meter-tp3924416p3924416.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] NR & AGC
I've not found this to be the case here--also use 3.06 and operate CW. I know that the AGC THR setting will affect the signal volume when NR is engaged. I typically have the THR setting between 4 and 6 and the NR at 2-1. I use the rear headphone jack. 73, Gary W7TEA FW ver 3.06 - audio increases to rock concert levels on s-9 CW signal when NR is switched in. NR is unusable now for me - same on SSB also. Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC hold, initial comments on beta v2.98
I have lots of noise as well and use a 80m vertically polarized loop. (The best nearly invisible antenna I could manage and keep the CCnR cops at bay.) Not being a contester and compete in the CW pile ups only when I'm one of a few, I've found Slow AGC at the fastest setting (40) to work the best. If I need something faster, I go to Fast AGC at a pretty slow setting. I seem to get the cleanest signal that way. 73, Gary W7TEA I live in a noisy environment (typical S-7) and have in the past complained about K3 audio. I was never sure what was going on but it just sounded rough and unpleasant. The hardware audio modifications I think helped a little and most certainly cleaned up the line-out IMD. Re: [Elecraft] Request for NR and NTCH inside AGC loop
I've found that adjusting AGC THR makes quite a difference. I normally have THR at 4 but when I need the NR, I adjust THR to 6 or even 7. I set NR at 2-1 or 2-2. With this setting, I normally do not have to turn AF gain up. 73, Gary W7TEA I am not the first one writing that NTCH is outside the AGC loop and that NR reduces the signal strength. With NR, less on strong signals but much on weak signals. For example, signals that are buried in noise seem to be brought to life with NR 3-3 but the AF gain needs to be all the way up, or more. Yes, I too would like the Shift steps to be 10hz. And while I'm asking, I would appreciate the sidetone volume and the spot volume to be independently adjustable. Re: [Elecraft] Musings on Noise Reduction
Yes, adjusting the AGC Threshold made a significant difference in NR for me on CW. I was using 3 or 4 and now use 5 or 6. NR is not appropriate or helpful in all occasions but I use it more than before. thanks! Gary W7TEA I started this thread and I have been watching the replies with interest. Dick's question about AGC settings piqued my interest and I did some additional research. First, Lyle Johnson's message here: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-AGC-Settings-Tutorial-td681120.html#a681120 does much to explain the AGC settings. Then, Fred KT5X's message here: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-AGC-settings-td395668.html#a395668 provided the inspiration to put the AGC configuration settings on the PF1 and PF2 buttons. Armed with this information, I spent an hour or so experimenting with AGC and Noise Reduction. I am pleased to say that I found a combination that has vastly improved my NR experience. The noise reduction is now working pretty darn well with a setting of F3-2. I won't go as far as to say its as good as the K2's (yet) but it's getting there. I urge you to do your own experimentation, but here are the settings I landed on: AGC THR = 7 AGC SLP = 12 AGC F = 100 Thanks, good luck, and please let me know if you come up with settings that work for you. 73, John, WA6L -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/Musings-on-Noise-Reduction-tp1626992p1650269.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noisy fans?
When I received my factory built K3 last spring (#1001) I thought the fans were louder than I expected after reading about folks who had to physically check to see if there fans were on. I could hear the fans start up through my headphones when PA temp hit 37C. I sent the rig back and the good folks traded out a few other fan modules and reported that the noise level was the same and appropriate. I inquired about Elecraft changing fan suppliers. They said that had happened, but the new supplier's fans were as quiet. So, I believe there are a variety of experiences. My fans are not whisper quiet, but maybe I, too, have been spoiled by my TT rigs with external cooling fins and no fans. Gary W7TEA I was trying to ferret out some weak signals on 160m when the cooling fans switched on, making it very hard to hear over the "whine" of the fans (or fan) even through the padding on my headphones. Re: [K3] [Elecraft] Questions about ARRL review
Thank you Lyle. It never occurred to me that this was purposeful. I adjusted the filter offsets with the 500 and 200hz filters to more closely "center" them. Guess I'll believe the factory settings from now on! tnx, Gary W7TEA This asymmetry is due to the way in which the K3 aligns the roofing and DSP filter passbands. [Elecraft] Operating split with KRX3
I had Elecraft install my KRX3 and KXV3 and all seems to be operating well in as much as I've tested. One thing I do notice though is that the main rx audio seems to drop significantly in the left headphone channel when I turn on the sub rx. After continuing to play around, it appears there is not a real decrease--at least not a significant one--but a perceived decrease because I'm hearing in one ear only. (Yes, my left ear hears as well as my right.) I can crank up the main rx AF but am thinking the basic Orion approach with the main rx in both ears and the sub rx in the right ear has advantages. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Keying
I've been thinking about hooking my K-3 keyer up too. Stewart, I don't know the specifications. My shack is 23C and the K3 has been on receive all day. The FP is 31-32C and PA is 30C. My fans start when I'm barely into a QSO and when the PA reaches 37C. I calibrated the PA just yesterday. 73, GAry W7TEA I have had my K3 on receive most of the day, whilst doing other things in the shack. [Elecraft] v2.32 Beta and DSP filtering
I notice an appreciable drop in audio output when I narrow the DSP filter from 150hz to 100hz. AFV readings go from 971 to 343 on a 50uv signal from a XG-2. The 200hz filter is OFF. RX equalization is flat. I believe this is new in 2.32 but wouldn't swear to it and, of course, I trashed the prior beta firmware. I have to say that I expected the fans to be "whisper quiet" from all the favorable posts I'd read before receiving my K3. Re: [Elecraft] AGC Settings and DSP 1.87
Lyle, can you describe what the Threshold value might be at a particular numerical setting? For example, is AGC action initiated at about 5 uv with a setting of "3" and a setting of "2" might be at 1 uv. I'm still trying to understand how this works. It seems the Orion threshold setting worked in the opposite way--that is, lowering the threshold raised the signal level. Or maybe my memory is faulty. thanks, Gary W7TEA Lyle Johnson wrote: > > DSP firmware 1.87 corrects two AGC problems occasionally resulting in > complaints of unexpectedly loud signals in an operator's headphones. > > The first lowers the AGC threshold. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - DSP IF Width Increment
On CW, I find the 50hz increments to work well for varying the bandwidth but prefer a smaller (I am used to 10hz) increment for Shift. Tweaking the shift or PBT function often enhances readability for me, even with the narrow filters the K3 provides. 73, Gary W7TEA I agree that the 50Hz jumps do feel like much bigger schwacks in the lower bandwidths but I don't feel them un-reasonably so... How narrow do you wish things to get? 25Hz? 10Hz? 1Hz? Personally I don't know what the right value is but I do think that 1Hz increments would be too "smooth". Re: [Elecraft] K3 "operating scripts" vs. "operating tips"
I have gotten used to the rather small K3 front panel or tell myself that I will someday. It was this "feature" which kept me from ordering one for several months. But after putting my hands on one, I figured I wasn't too old to adapt. My other rig is a TT Omni VII which I find to be the perfect size with adequate space between the controls. Now the hardware NB and second receiver are missing from this rig (I am assuming my KRX3 arrives soon) and the DSP filtering is not as tight, but otherwise it is a joy to operate. 73, Gary W7TEA Simon Brown (HB9DRV) wrote: > > At the Friedrichshafen show I was talking to a few fellow members of the > terminally bewildered radio operators club (Last of the Summer Wine > candidates). Re: [Elecraft] Question about K3 utility for the Mac
Thanks David! I've used Parallels to update my Omni VII. The K3 utility interface is very nice. I thought I saw a filters configuration page on the Mac version but didn't play with it. 73, Gary W7TEA Hi Gary, The Windows version has a few features that are not yet available in the Mac version. One being a filter configuration screen that allows you to setup the filters without having to do it manually. It also has a terminal screen that allows sending and receiving CW/RTTY/PSK from within the utility. These features are under development in the Mac version but not yet available. If you have either Parallels or VMWare Fusion running on your Mac, you can successfully run the Windows version of the utility on your Mac! Congrats on getting the new K3! Re: [Elecraft] K3 v. ORION II and flexibility (not that kind)
Front panel jack placement not only affects "lefties." I am right handed and tune the VFO and use the key with that hand. But I adjust gain, bandwidth and PBT knobs with my left hand. So, front panel plugs for headphones, key and mic get in the way. I applaud Elecraft for allowing such connections in the rig's back panel. On my Omni VII, I used the rear panel speaker plug for headphone audio and the ACC plug to connect a keyer. Otherwise front panel plugs would block, or make very awkward, access to the Multi, BW, and gain knobs. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Band changing...Devils Advocate...
My K3 should be arriving in a 2-3 weeks so I'll obviously pass on making suggestions until I can play with it awhile. My Omni VII's band stacking registers are not FIFO but rather like having four sets of VFO's for each band at the push of one button. So VFO A could be at 14.001 and VFO B operating split at 14.003 on register A. Registers B, C, and D can have their own unique settings. Rotating back to Register A brings back the last frequency you were at in this register-or 14.001/14.003. You move thru the registers by punching the band buttons. In addition, there are 100 memories each able to save both VFO's and split operation. They take two button pushes to either choose or save a frequency and to transfer it from memory to VFO. Seems pretty intuitive to me and very easy to use.
