Re: [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies

2013-10-17 Thread Gary, W7TEA
I have had the board off a couple of times to reseat and then to change out the
voltage reg IC and to
adjust the trimmer. I have done a visual inspection but will check that all
hardware is
securely fastened. May have to invest in another assembled board if nothing
else works.

Thank you all for the ideas.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies

2013-10-17 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Good morning Don. The PS suddenly died on me at our beach house in Long Beach.
I had no equipment there and first
assumed it was my K3. Brought the rig home to Portland and it worked fine.
So, it was the supply, an Astron RS35A--couple years old.
Anyway, checked the fuse, cleaned contacts etc and it was .8v at the
terminals. . So, I replaced the voltage IC which I got from
Mouser and used Deoxit on the the voltage adjustment pot. I have another RS35A
which has run fine for over 30 years.

I don't feel comfortable playing around inside a live supply but will take the
cover off and do another visual inspection while unplugged.
It has to be something simple I would think.

thanks Don, Gary W7TEA

2013-10-16 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Well, traded out the voltage regulator IC and no joy. Then I tried Deoxit on
the adjustment pot, tweaked it a bit and measured voltage at 13.8vdc!
Great! Turned it off and on, tried it again, and was ready start bragging to

had it open.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies

2013-10-10 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Well, I brought the RS35A (over 30 years old I think) and cable from the home
QTH to start substituting. First though, I cleaned the cable ends of the
offending set up and it tested at 13.8v. I plugged it into the K3 and it
fired up. Then I transmitted at low power and started getting feedback in
the audio channel and power output on the K3 showed that it was varying when
in tune. I turned off the supply and had a bite to eat. When I returned to
the shack planning on testing the voltage under power using the VFO B
display on the rig, it refused to turn on as did the keyer. I checked the
voltage at the PS terminals and it registered 0.8v DC. I took the fuse out,
cleaned it good, checked continuity, used Deoxit and still 0.8v DC. Also
confirmed that the outlet was 117v AC. Will use my old power supply
tomorrow. This power supply is two years old. Guess I'll take it home and
start reading up on troubleshooting but would love to hear ideas about what
probably went wrong and what to test for.

tnx, Gary W7TEA

2013-10-04 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Thank you Dick. I will be returning to that QTH with another power supply and
cable, deoxit and sandpaper to clean connections. I did turn the offending
Astron supply off and on at the switch but didn't unplug it. Would that have
been enough to reset the crowbar circuit?

I will be at the scene of the suspect power supply the end of next week and
will clean the cable and fuse as suggested. QTH is on the Long Beach WA

Maybe it is that simple. I will take my working PS and cable to try

Good news! Brought the rig home and connected to a different RS-35A and

much less expensive fixes.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies

2013-09-27 Thread Gary, W7TEA
This is part of the problem. I'm at another QTH without any equipment so
can't measure the voltage on the rig end of the power cable. Gary from
Elecraft told me that if that tests OK and rig still doesn't fire up, that I
will have to send it in. Taking rig home Monday and putting on a different
supply and then probably requesting a RSA.

[Elecraft] K3 suddenly dies

2013-09-27 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Have been away from my K3(#5763)/P3 for a couple months. Hooked it back up
yesterday and transmitted on a couple of bands to make sure it was working
and the SWR appropriate. All was fine. Today I turned it on and was
listening on the bands. I responded to a CQ on CW and caught that the SWR
was high after sending two characters but immediately and without an error
message the rig died. It won't turn back on. The power supply is on, the
power cable is properly connected. The wx was dry yesterday and today it's
blowing and raining so water may have gotten in one of the antenna traps.
That would explain the high SWR but I thought the rig would shut itself down
safely. It is dead. No rx or tx.

I've two K3's. My first was #1001 and this is a first for me. Any
thoughts?

[Elecraft] Another P3 freezes

2011-12-06 Thread Gary, W7TEA
On several occasions, I have left the K3/P3 on for a few hours to return to a
P3 screen which has frozen. Toggling P3 "power" on and off resolved it.
Then today, the FixTrack mode froze under the same circumstances. I always
use Fixed-Tune mode but it became stuck in Tracking mode. Attempting to
select Fixed-Tune in the Menu would not work until after a few reboots of
the P3.

In the archives I see that K9YC bonded the K3 and P3 chassis and I will try
the same. Wonder if anyone else has come up with a fix.

Band stacking registers-four per band
Separate volume settings for Spot and Sidetone

[Elecraft] K3/P3 issue--no signals

2011-10-05 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Left my rig for a couple of hours this morning and when I returned, my P3 was
no longer reading band signals. It is as if it is only hearing internal rx
noise with the "grass" well below S0 and RefCal cranked up to 145 and
beyond. The K3 seems to hearing just fine. Have restarted both units,
wiggled IF cable, verified that nothing else has changed, checked P3 Menu
items etc. Searched archives. There has to be something simple here going
on. Any help very much appreciated!

[Elecraft] RF gain calibration

2011-09-09 Thread Gary, W7TEA
Just bought a second K3 and thought I'd check the S meter calibration. Using
a XG-2, 50uv read S-7 but before going further I ran the RF gain calibration
in the K3 utility. I did it four times. When I chose to "use the signal
source" the calibration would conclude and the RF gain control and S meter
seemed to operate normally. When I turned the rig off and then back on, the
RF gain control became nearly inoperable (full CCW would move S meter only
up to S-5). When I chose "use factory default" the calibration seemed to
be remembered after restart and the RF gain control worked normally. I was
using K3 Utility Mac version 1.4.1.8

I remember a similar situation a few years back but a newer version of the
K3 utility addressed it. Is this a known problem? I didn't find any recent
posts about it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Spot Tone Level

2011-02-01 Thread Gary, W7TEA

I've been requesting separate Sidetone and Spot volume controls since my K3

though the volumes are identical on the K3, it doesn't seem like
it---perhaps because the Spot tone is heard amidst band noise and other
signals.

Re: [Elecraft] QSK THUMPS?

2010-04-27 Thread Gary, W7TEA

Eric, a few things you might try:

Check whether you have NEW chosen in CW WGHT menu (p 54)

Reduce RF gain

Determine if the thumping changes if you decrease power and/or bypass the
linear amp.

Determine if it occurs when you operating SPLIT

You might share your menu settings with the group. Someone sharper than I
am may see the culprit.

[Elecraft] [K3] P3 and hardware updates

My K3 (#1001) has performed flawlessly so I've not found reason to install

Re: [Elecraft] K3: honest question re Audio Peak Filter

2009-12-31 Thread Gary, W7TEA

The K3 is the first rig I've used in years that I've not run the audio thru
an external audio filter. I have owned and used several, often to
eliminated hiss and to peak the signal. On the K3 I've often found the AFX
feature helps me to copy signals that are challenging otherwise. This
morning I was listening on a noisy band to a weak signal with NR engaged and
set to 3-2. I turned it off and the signal disappeared in the mud. In
fact, if I'd been tuning the band without NR, I would have missed it
altogether. I repeated it several times. This was a first for me.

73, Gary W7TEA

An APF is a tool that I would like to see on the K3. I liked it on my
FT1000D.

Different people find different tools useful. Here's three K3 tools that I
have not found useful. The noise blanker, the notch filter, and the AFX
feature. But they are tools that might come in handy some day and I'm glad I
have them. I'd like to have the APF as well.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3: CW feature request

2009-12-03 Thread Gary, W7TEA

I agree. I've operated CW in USB since 76 and it's hard to change.
MacLoggerDX
allows for me to tweak this though so if I select a spot, it stays in CW
Reverse.

I have an additional request though. I would like to be able to adjust the
volume of the
SPOT and Sidetone independently. Often the SPOT volume is down in the mud
when
trying to spot a signal amidst the band noise. If I increase the volume,
then the sidetone
knocks my ears off when I transmit. CW Tune is rather approximate and I
tend to get different
results if I use auto Spot.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Question about S-Meter Calibration

2009-11-05 Thread W7TEA

Grant, on an earlier thread on this general topic Wayne said that
SMTR OF and SC may need further tweaking when switching to Abs
after first aligning in Nor mode with Pre on. My experience mimics yours.
With a 50uv signal and the S meter at S9, Nor OF setting is 30 and Abs
setting is at 23. So that's quite a tweak.

I prefer Abs, having gotten used to the idea with my Omni VII. I'm not
sure why it is recommended that the alignment first occur in Nor mode
unless what you and I are seeing is abnormal. It is almost as if the
settings
are independent except for SC which is 14 in both cases. So, no insight,
just a similar experience.

Gary W7TEA
K3 #1001

So, the S-Meter calibration instructions in the manual indicate that
PRE should be on. When calibration is done, that means that a 50uV
signal reads S-9 with PRE on .. but about S-7 with PRE off. And then
if the mode is changed from Normal to Absolute, a 50uV signal reads
S-7 with or without the preamp.

Just wondering (maybe I need to RTFM and specs again), why that would
be the case, vs. 50uV being S-9 without the preamp. I have always
just ignored the instruction manual, and calibrated to S-9 with the
preamp off. So a 50uV signal reads S-9 (with or without preamp
engaged if the mode is Absolute).

Am I screwing something up? Or does it just not matter all that much
since (1) it doesn't impact anything other than the bar graph, (2) an
S-meter reading is not all that terribly important anyway (I don't run
a lab), (3) it's all relative, (4) the P3 is in my future, and (5)
all DX or contest exchanges are 5-9 by definition :-)

To set the record straight on a related topic -- I posted about an
issue with gain calibration using the updated K3UtilityOSX a couple of
days ago. Turned out it was apparently nothing more than cockpit
error and fat-fingers on my part, which is typical. Dave Fleming and
Elecraft support (Gary Surrency) were both very helpful and got me set
on the path of truth and light ...

Anyone have any insight on the S-meter cal thing?

Thanks ... Grant/NQ5T

[Elecraft] [K3] RF gain calibration and S meter

2009-10-31 Thread W7TEA

Just ran the RF gain calibration with the new Mac K3 Utility and an XG2. I
did it
a few times because I would get an ERR DSE error message when
calibrating the SUB rx on occasion. I then went back and re-calibrated the
S meter. I've noticed three things.

1) The rx seems considerably "quieter." The PRE is needed now where I
seldom
used it before.

2) Turning RF gain to minimum quiets the rx but the S meter only advances to
S-5

3) I calibrated the S meter with PRE on and SMTR MD set to normal as Wayne
recommended. When I change the MD setting to ABS, the 50uv signal drops to
S-6 and cannot be adjusted up to S-9 with SMTR OF.

I would appreciate any help here. I'm tempted to go back redo
the RF gain calibration using the factory defaults option.

[Elecraft] [K3] firmware load failure

2009-08-27 Thread W7TEA

I had latest beta (3.27) loaded and thought I'd save the configuration. It
failed with a prompt regarding EEPROM 000.013. I thought I'd reload the
firmware again (3.27) but it stopped, saying that it couldn't load MCU.
The K3 was frozen with MCU LD on VFO B and TX light flashing. It would not
turn off. I restarted the Utility and got the same message. I turned off
the power supply and when restarting the K3, it shows the same MCU LD on VFO
B but the fans are running and the screen light is no longer lit. The is
the first issue I've ever had with firmware loading. No of course the K3 is
inoperable. The utility is (Mac 1.2.3.18)

Couldn't see anything in the Troubleshooting section of the manual. Help
Please!

[Elecraft] v 3.25 NR

2009-08-16 Thread W7TEA

I am very pleased with the new NR on CW. With weak to moderate signals I can
find no discernible difference to my ear in switching between the four
algorithms, F1, F2, F3, F4. Furthermore, the second figure seems to be a
reverse of the previous NR setting. In other words, F1-1 seems to provide
the most NR and F-4 the least. I like it.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 3.23 is very nice!

2009-07-30 Thread W7TEA

10 hz PBT granularity will be very welcome. This is one of the three basic
items I've really
missed in using the K3. The other two are independent volume controls for
Sidetone
and Spot and the ability to hear VFO A in both ears and VFO B in one ear.
I believe they are on the list and it's just a matter of being patient.
What a great rig
and great company!

Gary W7TEA

I loaded the beta firmware 3.23 mainly to get the 10 Hz tuning on the pass
band. It is very smooth and really moves the K3 up another notch on the way
to perfection. OK, I guess I'm letting the mojo get to me. ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Utility and Safari 4.0.1

2009-06-20 Thread W7TEA

Adding the "/" at the end of the URL works well, Grant. Thank you.
Always downloaded them directly before but will adopt this approach.

Gary W7TEA

I didn't have any trouble on 4.0.1. But I don't download the files
directly with Safari. If you add a "/" to the end of the URL, the
Beta directory links as a read-only drive. It's then a simple matter
to copy out the files.

Re: [Elecraft] k3 NR Audio level increase

2009-04-25 Thread W7TEA

Joe, following your instructions, I cannot duplicate this on my rig
listening to a S-9 signal. I do find that if AGC-THR is set
below 5, the audio drops significantly when initiating NR at
my preferred setting, 2-1. Decreasing the AGC SLP increases
the audio with NR engaged.

Gary W7TEA

Don,

Try this:

1. Set mode to CW, BW to 2.00, RX EQ = flat.

2. With no signal tuned in, hold NR and set to F4-4. Tap NR twice to
turn off NR.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] NR & AGC

2009-04-10 Thread W7TEA

I've not found this to be the case here--also use 3.06 and operate CW.
I know that the AGC THR setting will affect the signal volume when NR is
engaged.
I typically have the THR setting between 4 and 6 and the NR at 2-1.
I use the rear headphone jack.

73, Gary W7TEA

FW ver 3.06 - audio increases to rock concert levels on s-9 CW signal when NR
is switched in. NR is unusable now for me - same on SSB also.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 AGC hold, initial comments on beta v2.98

2009-03-02 Thread W7TEA

I have lots of noise as well and use a 80m vertically polarized loop. (The
best nearly
invisible antenna I could manage and keep the CCnR cops at bay.) Not being
a
contester and compete in the CW pile ups only when I'm one of a few, I've
found
Slow AGC at the fastest setting (40) to work the best. If I need something
faster,
I go to Fast AGC at a pretty slow setting. I seem to get the cleanest signal
that
way.

73, Gary W7TEA

I live in a noisy environment (typical S-7) and have in the past complained
about K3 audio. I was never sure what was going on but it just sounded rough
and unpleasant. The hardware audio modifications I think helped a little and
most certainly cleaned up the line-out IMD.

Re: [Elecraft] Request for NR and NTCH inside AGC loop

2009-01-28 Thread W7TEA

I've found that adjusting AGC THR makes quite a difference. I normally have
THR at 4 but when I need the NR, I adjust THR to 6 or even 7. I set NR at
2-1 or 2-2. With this setting, I normally do not have to turn AF gain up.

73, Gary W7TEA

I am not the first one writing that NTCH is outside the AGC loop and that NR
reduces the signal strength. With NR, less on strong signals but much on
weak signals. For example, signals that are buried in noise seem to be
brought to life with NR 3-3 but the AF gain needs to be all the way up, or
more.

Re: [Elecraft] SHIFT pitch

2009-01-27 Thread W7TEA

I haven't found it any more sensitive. The granularity is 50hz and I believe
that 10hz would work much better for CW. Because of this, I really never
use shift as I have in other rigs.

73, Gary W7TEA

When using narrow (250 Hz 8-pole XTAL) filters in the two receivers I find
the shift is sensitive to touch and adjust. It would be good to have smaller
increments than the present. I usually have the CW pitch set to 520 Hz.
Cannot remember it was this sensitive before the latest F/W upgrade, was it?

any one else noticed this?

Re: [Elecraft] Notch control

2009-01-11 Thread W7TEA

Yes, I too would like the Shift steps to be 10hz. And while I'm asking, I
would appreciate the sidetone volume and the spot volume to be independently
adjustable. As it is, with the sidetone set at a proper level, the spot
level is
too low.

Gary W7TEA

Amen Brian on the shift control. That is still my biggest complaint. Shift
needs to be to the point with a narrow filter where it seems continuous
instead of steps. There is a very very fine point where shift is too much
or not quite enough and with out being close to continuous that point is
hard to achieve. Shift on my old MP was one of my major tools.

Re: [Elecraft] Musings on Noise Reduction

2008-12-12 Thread W7TEA

Yes, adjusting the AGC Threshold made a significant difference in NR for me
on CW. I was using 3 or 4 and now use 5 or 6. NR is not appropriate or
helpful in all occasions but I use it more than before.

thanks! Gary W7TEA

I started this thread and I have been watching the replies with interest.
Dick's question about AGC settings piqued my interest and I did some
additional research.

First, Lyle Johnson's message here:
http://n2.nabble.com/K3-AGC-Settings-Tutorial-td681120.html#a681120 does
much to explain the AGC settings.

Then, Fred KT5X's message here:
http://n2.nabble.com/K3-AGC-settings-td395668.html#a395668 provided the
inspiration to put the AGC configuration settings on the PF1 and PF2
buttons.

Armed with this information, I spent an hour or so experimenting with AGC
and Noise Reduction. I am pleased to say that I found a combination that
has vastly improved my NR experience. The noise reduction is now working
pretty darn well with a setting of F3-2. I won't go as far as to say its as
good as the K2's (yet) but it's getting there.

I urge you to do your own experimentation, but here are the settings I
landed on:

AGC THR = 7
AGC SLP = 12
AGC F = 100

Thanks, good luck, and please let me know if you come up with settings that
work for you.

73,

John, WA6L

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noisy fans?

2008-12-09 Thread W7TEA

When I received my factory built K3 last spring (#1001) I thought
the fans were louder than I expected after reading about folks
who had to physically check to see if there fans were on. I could
hear the fans start up through my headphones when PA temp hit 37C.
I sent the rig back and the good folks traded out a few other fan modules
and reported that the noise level was the same and appropriate.

I inquired about Elecraft changing fan suppliers. They said that had
happened, but the new supplier's fans were as quiet.

So, I believe there are a variety of experiences. My fans are not whisper
quiet, but maybe I, too, have been spoiled by my TT rigs with external
cooling fins and no fans.

Gary W7TEA

I was trying to ferret out some weak signals on 160m when
the cooling fans switched on, making it very hard
to hear over the "whine" of the fans (or fan) even through
the padding on my headphones.

Has anyone tried to quiet them down with vibration
isolators, etc?

[Elecraft] NEW QSK -- Internal/External Keyer

2008-12-05 Thread W7TEA

Under Config: CW Wght: tap 3 is the choice between NEW and OLD QSK. NEW is
supposed to reduce keying artifacts when experiencing heavy QRN or QRM
by delaying full rx recovery a bit. I notice a slight difference between NEW
and
OLD QSK, slight but helpful.

I've been trying my IdiomPress K-3 keyer instead of the internal keyer to
gain
the use of the M1-M4 buttons for programmable functions and still retain
CW message play by using the IdiomPress keyer. But I'm having difficulty
determining whether NEW QSK works with external keying. (SSB+CW
works, CW WGHT would not of course.)Anyone know about NEW/OLD QSK?
My ears seem to tell me that it does not, but I'm just not sure.

Re: [K3] [Elecraft] Questions about ARRL review

2008-11-27 Thread W7TEA

Thank you Lyle. It never occurred to me that this was purposeful. I adjusted
the filter offsets with the 500 and 200hz filters to more closely "center"
them.

Guess I'll believe the factory settings from now on!

tnx, Gary W7TEA

This asymmetry is due to the way in which the K3 aligns the roofing and
DSP filter passbands. The signal is not necessarily centered in the
roofing filter passband; rather, the signal is shifted towards an edge
to maximize the use of the roofing filter's skirt selectivity.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: listening to both rcvrs

2008-11-17 Thread W7TEA

I mentioned this just the other day. By ability to copy the DX station is
much reduced when only hearing him/her in one ear. I either have to crank
up the main rx AF gain considerably or go back to one rx and use REV. I've
used a variety of audio filters over the years--none is necessary with the
K3 of course--but have not used an outboard audio mixer. Any
recommendations on a mixer which would allow the main rx audio in both ears
and the sub in the right ear?

Turn on the SUB, turn on B SET, hit the ANT button until Main appears. When
my rig came back from Aptos after a sub rx install, it was connected to the
Aux
antenna instead of the Main.

[Elecraft] Operating split with KRX3

2008-11-15 Thread W7TEA

I had Elecraft install my KRX3 and KXV3 and all seems to be operating well in
as much as I've tested.
One thing I do notice though is that the main rx audio seems to drop
significantly in the left headphone channel when I turn on the sub rx.
After continuing to play around, it appears there is not a real decrease--at
least not a significant one--but a perceived decrease because I'm hearing in
one ear only. (Yes, my left ear hears as well as my right.) I can crank up
the main rx AF but am thinking the basic Orion approach with the main rx in
both ears and the sub rx in the right ear has advantages.

I've been thinking about hooking my K-3 keyer up too. I'm assuming none
of the internal keyer controls work of course but wish/hope the NEW QSK

relates

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Temperature Specifications

2008-08-31 Thread W7TEA

Stewart, I don't know the specifications. My shack is 23C and the K3
has been on receive all day. The FP is 31-32C and PA is 30C.
My fans start when I'm barely into a QSO and when the PA reaches 37C.
I calibrated the PA just yesterday.

73, GAry W7TEA

I have had my K3 on receive most of the day, whilst doing other
things in the shack.

By chance I touched the top of the case and it felt quite hot,
given that the shack temperature is 26 deg. According to the LCD
readout both the FP and PA temps were at 34 deg.

[Elecraft] v2.32 Beta and DSP filtering

2008-08-29 Thread W7TEA

I notice an appreciable drop in audio output when I narrow the DSP filter
from 150hz to 100hz. AFV readings go from 971 to 343 on a 50uv signal from
a XG-2. The 200hz filter is OFF. RX equalization is flat.

I believe this is new in 2.32 but wouldn't swear to it and, of course, I
trashed the prior beta firmware. Reloaded all firmware again this morning
and the effect is still the same.

Anyone else notice this? Thanks.

[K3] RE: [Elecraft] How do you measure filter offset

2008-08-27 Thread W7TEA

Using this method I tweaked the Config menu filter offset adjustments for
my 500hz and 200hz filters. It seemed to make a difference centering
the passband, especially on the narrower filter.

Although my K3 was factory built, I have found that
the REF CAL freq, S meter and now filter offsets all needed a bit of
tweaking.

Re: [Elecraft] 2.23 beta & NB

2008-08-27 Thread W7TEA

I've not experienced this Brian. When I turn the NB on/off and the hardware
blanker is enabled, I can hear a mechanical click. I am assuming it is the
hardware blanker causing the "chops." Perhaps the relay is not disengaging
it when you turn off NB using the front panel button. Does it disengage when
you turn it off using the Level adjustment?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Auto Spot vs CWT

2008-08-24 Thread W7TEA

Fred, I find that Auto-Spot will find ever so slightly different frequencies
if you select it a couple of times. My favorite method is to use Spot alone,
although
I'm hoping the Spot volume can be adjustable in the near future. If I've
the
Sidetone volume at the proper level, the Spot volume is too low.

Re: [K3] [Elecraft] AGC and all that

2008-08-08 Thread W7TEA

David, I would appreciate this as well. I've spent a lot of time adjusting
the Threshold, Slope and RF gain looking for that "sweet spot" where
background noise drops and signal to noise ratio improves for weak signals.
I usually settle for a Threshold value of 4 or 5 but then summer QRN
seems especially harsh.

Re: [Elecraft] Cooling Fans

2008-08-07 Thread W7TEA

I have to say that I expected the fans to be "whisper quiet" from all the
favorable posts I'd read before receiving my K3. My previous history is with
rigs having external cooling fins and no fans, so I'm probably spoiled
regarding fan noise. As much as I do love the K3, I hear the fans kick in
when I have headphones on. This happens after a fairly short CW qso at
100w. The rig has been checked out at the factory, so I guess it re-affirms
the notion that everyone's ears are different.

Re: [Elecraft] Using both AGC and RF gain?

I do the same thing although I've slowed the FAST AGC decay. I'm still
looking for the optimum Threshold setting and have taken to adjusting it
for whatever band condx I find. I run the SLP pretty high and flat.

The receiver seems so "hot," or my antenna so susceptible to QRN, that
I seldom use the PRE.

Re: [Elecraft] AGC Settings and DSP 1.87

2008-07-23 Thread W7TEA

Lyle, can you describe what the Threshold value might be at a particular
numerical setting? For example, is AGC action initiated at about 5 uv
with a setting of "3" and a setting of "2" might be at 1 uv.

I'm still trying to understand how this works. It seems the Orion
threshold setting worked in the opposite way--that is, lowering the
threshold raised the signal level. Or maybe my memory is faulty.

thanks, Gary W7TEA

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - DSP IF Width Increment

2008-07-09 Thread W7TEA

On CW, I find the 50hz increments to work well for varying the bandwidth
but prefer a smaller (I am used to 10hz) increment for Shift. Tweaking the
shift or PBT function often enhances readability for me, even with the
narrow filters the K3 provides.

73, Gary W7TEA

I agree that the 50Hz jumps do feel like much bigger schwacks in the
lower bandwidths but I don't feel them un-reasonably so... How narrow
do you wish things to get? 25Hz? 10Hz? 1Hz? Personally I don't know
what the right value is but I do think that 1Hz increments would be too
"smooth". To the point of SLOW.

2008-06-30 Thread W7TEA

I have gotten used to the rather small K3 front panel or tell myself that I
will someday.
It was this "feature" which kept me from ordering one for several
months. But after putting my hands on one, I figured I wasn't too old to
adapt.

My other rig is a TT Omni VII which I find to be the perfect size with
adequate space
between the controls. Now the hardware NB and second receiver are missing
from this
rig (I am assuming my KRX3 arrives soon) and the DSP filtering is not as
tight, but
otherwise it is a joy to operate.

[Elecraft] [K3] Turning filters off/on

2008-06-27 Thread W7TEA

I have the 500 and 200 hz filters installed. Most of the time I prefer using
the 500 hz filter even when narrowing the DSP filtering to 200 hz or below.
Is there an easy and fast way to engage the 200 hz roofing filter during
those rare occasions when it is needed without going into the config menu to
turn it on?

Please help me with an upcoming article on the K3 in NCJ. I want to mention
some of the third party products that offer explicit support for the K3. I
know about HRD, WinTest, N1MM, Top Ten decoder and DXD cables, microHAM
Router software and cables and Elecraft products like KRC2 and XVnnn. What
else?

Thanks & 73,

Re: [Elecraft] Question about K3 utility for the Mac

2008-06-13 Thread W7TEA

Thanks David! I've used Parallels to update
my Omni VII. The K3 utility interface is very nice.
I thought I saw a filters configuration page on the Mac
version but didn't play with it.

73, Gary W7TEA

Hi Gary,

The Windows version has a few features that are not
yet available in the Mac version. One being a filter
configuration screen that allows you to setup the
filters without having to do it manually. It also has
a terminal screen that allows sending and receiving
CW/RTTY/PSK from within the utility. These features
are under development in the Mac version but not yet
available. If you have either Parallels or VMWare
Fusion running on your Mac, you can successfully run
the Windows version of the utility on your Mac!

Congrats on getting the new K3!

Regards,

David, W4SMT

David, do you know if there will be an update to

Re: [Elecraft] K3 v. ORION II and flexibility (not that kind)

2008-06-12 Thread W7TEA

Front panel jack placement not only affects "lefties." I am right handed and
tune the VFO and use the key with that hand. But I adjust gain, bandwidth
and PBT knobs with my left hand. So, front panel plugs for headphones, key
and mic get in the way. I applaud Elecraft for allowing such connections in
the rig's back panel. On my Omni VII, I used the rear panel speaker plug
for headphone audio and the ACC plug to connect a keyer. Otherwise front
panel plugs would block, or make very awkward, access to the Multi, BW, and
gain knobs.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Band changing...Devils Advocate...

2008-05-30 Thread W7TEA

My K3 should be arriving in a 2-3 weeks so I'll
obviously pass on making suggestions until I can play with it awhile.
My Omni VII's band stacking registers are not FIFO
but rather like having four sets of VFO's for each band at
the push of one button.

So VFO A could be at 14.001 and VFO B operating
split at 14.003 on register A. Registers B, C, and D
can have their own unique settings. Rotating back to
Register A brings back the last frequency you were at
in this register-or 14.001/14.003. You move thru the
registers by punching the band buttons. In addition,
there are 100 memories each able to save both VFO's
and split operation. They take two button pushes to
either choose or save a frequency and to transfer it
from memory to VFO.

Seems pretty intuitive to me and very easy to use.

Re: [Elecraft] The K3 in comparison to the Big Guns

2008-05-17 Thread W7TEA

What held me back from completing my K3 order was the small
front panel. I played with one in Aptos and decided that while I'd much
prefer
a larger panel with more space between the knobs, the K3 would work.
I've most recently owned an Orion, an Omni VI+ and an Omni VII.
I tend to like big. Hope the K3 arrives next month.

IC-7800 height or even a tad more. I'm not a fan of making radios as small
