Re: [Elecraft] KX3 fuses

2019-10-15 Thread Don Wilhelm

Terry,

The KX3 has internal protection, but a fused power lead (only necessary
in the positive lead) provides additional protection. That is important
IMHO when powered by an external battery - there is a lot of energy in a
battery, and if the wire is pinched and shorts, it will spew molten metal.

Fuse close to the power source, NOT the radio end of the power cable.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 fuses

2019-10-15 Thread Fred Jensen
Well ... yes, best to fuse the + conductor. However, be aware that
inline fuse holders [and their fuses] are not zero ohm superconducting
devices.  The best ones seem to be the automotive blade-type [Rig
Runners use them] with a wide contact surface and wiping action on
insertion and removal. K [actually, most radios] do not like
low supply voltages, it increases the IMD among other things.  So after
installing the fuse, you should adjust your power supply voltage to make
sure it's not sagging under load from the additional resistance.

In the case of a mobile installation, you should fuse BOTH conductors.
Should the connection from the battery to vehicle frame become
disconnected or high resistance, starting current return will be through
your radio equipment's chassis and return conductor.  I've never heard
of this actually happening but then there's a reason aircraft connectors
are made so things can't be cross connected.

I witnessed a real event where cross connection happened, however with
apologies to Pierre Fermat, the story is too long to fit in this email.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 fuses

2019-10-15 Thread Chris Parfitt
I certainly agree with Don. As I try to keep a modular approach for my
equipment, I use Powerpoles on everything. For portable equipment, I created
short fused cables from ATC blade fuses (just got them from Walmart or an auto
parts store) and some black 12-gauge wire with Powerpoles on both ends. With
the Powerpoles, I can use on any cable close to the power source.

Hope this helps,
Chris, AC4MP

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 fuses

2019-10-15 Thread Don Wilhelm

All,

An additional point in mobile installations - do NOT connect the
negative directly to the battery. Follow the negative battery lead to
the point where that lead connects to the frame.

Many modern vehicles have sensing devices in that path from the battery
negative and the point where it connects to the frame. Connecting
directly to the battery bypasses those important sensors.

I've got a KX3 in great shape except for a couple of gouges in the paint

anyone sell paint that I can use to "retexture" those areas on the case
to better match the rest of the case. I'd prefer not to spend $100 or
more to replace those parts.

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] KXUSB

2019-11-18 Thread Don Wilhelm

Ingo,

The KXUSB is an FTDI USB to serial adapter with a 3.5mm plug on the
serial end. Yes, it will provide computer control of the KX3 through
many software applications that support the KX3. That adapter can also
be used to allow KX3 Utility to load firmware and do other functions.

If you have a normal USB to serial adapter, you can easily build a short
equivalent of the KXSER cable - there is a schematic shown in the XG3
manual near the end.

[Elecraft] KX3 temperature compensation

2020-01-16 Thread Mike Harris via Elecraft

Ref a recent post on this subject:

"That said, I did notice--as with others in previous posts to the various
Elecraft/KX3 lists--that the signal is significantly shifted on 6 meters
when performing the second reference calibration based on a HF signal
(and vice versa). However, there doesn't seem to be much of a difference

regardless of where one calibrates on HF. For me, since I don't do much
operating on 6 meters, I kept the 10MHz based reference calibration. It
would be nice if one could set a separate reference frequency for 6m/2m
vs. HF so that the radio can be right on frequency regardless of where
it's being used."

From the Elecraft wed site:

The XG50 is a simple 49.380MHz signal source specifically designed for
use with the KX3 Extended VFO Temperature Compensation Procedure.

[Elecraft] KX3 accessory installation

2016-07-24 Thread Dennis L. Haarsager
I have a KX3, s/n 520, for which I purchased the KXBC3 battery
charger/clock and the KXFL3 roofing filter about four years ago. It was a
busy period and they got set aside. However, they just turned up in
unpacking from a recent move from Virginia to Maine. In the intervening
few years, I've discovered that dexterity loss from arthritis is making a
number things involving small parts (or pills) more difficult for me, so
I'm thinking that to be safe I should ask someone else to take this on.

Bottom line: Is there anyone out there, especially someone with experience
in calibrating the roofing filter installation, who I could pay to do the
installation of these items? I could send along my XG3 if that is needed.
Please reply off-list.

This KX3 has the antenna tuner installed but not the 2M option board.

Thanks and 73,
Dennis Haarsager, N7DH/1

Hi It's not that simple Basically you take the I and q signals, sample them

Hi All

Yes this topic might be a little bit more complicated than the title
suggest.

So I have the KX3 plugged into the audio input of my computer, and its
sending quadrature data (IQ) to the sound card, the sound card samples at
96Khz.

So my question is how I process this? Yes I know use a piece of software,
but I am trying to write this, I know the IQ data is coming through down
and if I use the right process on the IQ data I get base band data out. I
kind of know that however I dont understand the SDR data coming out, so for
example and I getting sample of IQ data at freq point Y, or is it  a
circular buffer arrangement.

I guess what I am saying is, is the IQ data coming from teh KX3 data from
teh Centre Freq (+/-) the bandwith scope, or just the centre freq + some
additional side bands?

How are bandwith and sampling rate related? I mean if I am sampling at at
96Khz, with a band with of 48Khz does that mean I am only getting 2 samples
per second at perticular freq??? Or am I getting the entire band of 48Khz
at 96Khz.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 SDR

2016-07-27 Thread Enzo Adrian-Reyes
Hi Tom

I never thought it was simple :)

I am just trying to understand what is going on, so given by what you've
said I would push the IQ data coming from the KX3 into an FFT, that FFT
would then produce the circular buffer that would let me analyse what
signals are in that band?

But this would be in the frequency domain then, however I am not interested
in a band plot, I have a signal at Freq X, with the KX3 tuned at Y, (X=Y),
would I have to still pump that IQ data into the FFT to filter all the
other signals out, then inverse teh FFT to get the IQ data that I would
want?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 SDR

2016-07-27 Thread Don Wilhelm
If you are writing your own software, you will have to become proficient
in Digital Signal Processing. The I and Q signals are simply baseband
signals that are 90 degrees out of phase - by themselves, they will do
nothing but audio signals, but with DSP processing, they can do most
anything that is possible in the math of digital signals - limited only
by your processing power and skills at DSP signal processing.

Run them through FFT transforms to convert them to digital signals, and
then do the math of your DSP algorithms to produce whatever you want -
panadapter display, demodulation, etc. You can add filtering and other
things like AGC, Noise Reduction, Noise Blanking, and a whole variety of
effects. It is all in how you choose to implement you DSP mathematical
functions.

Rather than write your own, there are several DSP applications available
for free or at nominal cost - try HDSDR or NaP3 or WIN4K3 as examples.
Once you see what is happening with those applications, you may be moved
to write your own DSP application to process the I and Q signals.

So my question is how I process this? Yes I know use a piece of software,

kind of know that however I dont understand the SDR data coming out, so for
example and I getting sample of IQ data at freq point Y, or is it a
circular buffer arrangement.

Hi

Yes, well I have used those in the past, hence my confusion, when I see
bandwith of a SDR at lets say 24Khz
and I am sampling at 48Khz. Does that mean I am sampling the whole bandwith
of 24Khz centered on freq X, or
am I a sampling some point Y at +/- from the center frequency.

I am trying to design a digital mode, and while I do understand the
concepts, could do it in GNU radio but it abstracts a lot of this away, and
I would like to do this in C/C++
So before getting there I have to know what is going on, especially what
data is coming from the device.

Thinking about it yeah it would have to be a stream of IQ signals coming
from the KX3 with a certain freq set, but I am guessing its in the time
domain. Not at the freq domain?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 SDR

2016-07-27 Thread Lyle Johnson
The signals at the IQ jack on the KX3 are analog, not digital. They are
centered approximately 8 kHz away from the dial frequency as the KX3
uses an internal offset of 8 kHz. Depending on the firmware release and
user settable options, that offset may be on either side of the center
of the IQ audio.

The rate at which you sample it in general will determine, and in any
case will certainly limit, the maximum bandwidth you can digitize for
further processing.

Internally, the KX3 samples the analog IQ signals at 48 kHz.

Externally you can sample at any rate you desire that your A/D
(soundcard) will support, as long as you take into account anti-aliasing
filtering and the bandwidth/response of the analog circuitry in the KX3
itself, and any similar limitations of the soundcard including its
analog circuitry and the characteristics of its ADC. For example, many
ADCs do noise shaping of their sampling systems to prefer 0 to 20 kHz at
the expense of internal noise humps above 20 kHz.

General information about the frequency rolloff of the KX3 analog IQ
signals have been discussed here in the past, and I think (but have not
checked) that they are in the Owner's Manual. You can also observe
them, perhaps using your proposed soundcard and the tools that gnu radio
provides for you to explore these topics.

HiI have little experience in demodulation of the signals but I did do SSB and
AM at one time. Basically once you have the samples in the fre1uency domain you
will want to apply a bandpass filters and shift it down to baseband,  do an
inverse fft and then a Hilbert transform to demodulate the SSB signal.Again you
best bet is the free online book I mention.73 Tom

Hi Tom
I never thought it was simple :)
I am just trying to understand what is going on, so given by what you've said I
would push the IQ data coming from the KX3 into an FFT, that FFT would then
produce the circular buffer  that would  let me analyse what signals are in
that band?
But this would be in the frequency domain then, however I am not interested in
a band plot,  I have a signal at Freq X, with the KX3 tuned at Y, (X=Y), would
I have to still pump that IQ data into the FFT to filter all the other signals
out, then inverse teh FFT to get the IQ data that I would want?

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 SDR

2016-07-28 Thread Lyle Johnson

Sorry, I was thinking of the KX2 which always has the IF shift enabled.

In a KX3, the center of the IQ stream is approximately the dial setting.
I say approximately because some modes (AM, FM) or submodes (narrow SSB
using Weaver demodulation) there may be some offset regardless of the
setting of IF shift.

Thank you for your careful reading, Greg!

73,

Lyle KK7P

The signals at the IQ jack on the KX3 are analog, not digital. They
are centered approximately 8 kHz away from the dial frequency as the
KX3 uses an internal offset of 8 kHz. Depending on the firmware
release and user settable options, that offset may be on either side
of the center of the IQ audio.

Do you mean always 8 kHz off, or is this only if the IF shift is
enabled? I would expect a 0 offset without that.

[Elecraft] KX3 / FLDIGI Problem

2016-07-30 Thread James Bennett
I have a KX3 and am running FLDIGI 3.22.01 on my Raspberry Pi 3. Everything
works… except for one annoying thing and I’m trying to find out if this is an
FLDIGI issue or something I need to tweak on the KX3.

When I fire off a macro such as a CQ message, the rig goes into transmit as it
should, sends the text in the macro as it should, but never returns to receive:
the red TX light on the KX3 stays on, although the RF output ceases. I have to
manually “tickle” the KX3 XMIT button to get the radio into receive mode. Here
is a sample macro text I’ve been using to get this resolved:

Testing testing de w6jhb w6jhb k

Seems pretty darn basic, but in my case, basic isn’t getting the job done.
Anyone else with a KX3 and FLDIGI know what I need to do to get this working
w/o having to reach up there and press that XMIT button to get back to receive
mode?

Thanks, Jim / W6JHB

[Elecraft] KX3 Software Request

2016-09-05 Thread Larry D. Warner
Not sure if anyone else wants this but I will ask. There are many settings
in the KX3 and sometimes I get one wrong then can't figure out what it
should be or maybe even can't figure out what I set improperly. It would be
really great if I could save every setting in the KX3 as a setup file in the
KX3. It would be even nicer if I could save multiple setups. I could have
one for my favorite PSK31 setup and another for SSB operation. Each setup
would store all the settings in the KX3 so when I recall it I don't need to
set anything else. As a new HAM I already have a lot to remember and this
would help me with my memory overload.

[Elecraft] KX3 QSK working.??

KX3 QSK not working. Yes it took a while for me to discover this, but now am

There was an “experimental” QSK released a few f/w revs back for the KX3. But
appears there is NO QSK for f/w 2.38 (delay == 0). Anyone comment on this.

Haven’t used QSK much, as I never could adjust to the RX “noise” between

set high for KX3 on this point.

Wonderful radio. I got it thinking I would be doing some SOTA and

[Elecraft] KX3/KXPA100 issue

2016-09-30 Thread David F. Reed

I am running a KX3 into a KXPA100.

It all plays very nicely except for one issue; on a seemingly random
basis, it seems to lose communications between them in a big way. The
KX3 has (without my doing anything) reset the PA Mode to Off, and the
PWR to 5.0.  When this happens, let's say I have power set to 30 watts;
the KXPA100 shuts down and to get it back up, I have to go to the KX3,
re-enable PA MODE from Off to On, and and reset the PWR level from 5.0
watts to 30 watts.

My questions are:

1. Is anyone else experiencing this?
2. What is going on?
3. How do I fix it

Any help appreciated.

Thanks & 73 de W5SV, Dave

[Elecraft] KX3 for sale

2016-10-11 Thread Matt Murphy
I'm considering switching to a KX2, if anyone is interested in my KX3
please make an offer.

- Mint condition 700 range serial number.
- Contains the crystal filter and ATU
- Includes the matching "Pro Audio Engineering" power supply.
- Includes a new matching pelican case.
- Includes the Elecraft matching paddle.

Not in a hurry to sell and very happy with the setup, but my last trip made
me think that I might prefer the slightly smaller size transceiver so I can
pack more clothing in the same backpack.

[Elecraft] KX3 Unwanted Scanning

2016-10-29 Thread David Inger
I decided to get my new (to me) KX3 going on psk31. I ordered the proper
cables from Elecraft. Plugged the cables into the KX3 ("red" cable go to the
Phones jack; "green" cable goes to the Mic jack). Put the radio in data
mode ("PSK D" selected). The radio begins to scan, and will not stop until
I unplug the green cable going to the Mic jack). I tried this set up with
two different external soundcards and well as the one internal to the Sony
laptop; no joy. I also tried different digital software programs to see if
that was the problem; still no joy.

I checked the archives and did find a mention to this problem in 2015 but no
definitive answer. I am sure I am overlooking the obviously. I will be
happy to put on my dunce cap, once someone can point me in the right
direction.

[Elecraft] KX3 Macros commands

2016-10-29 Thread Gerard Elijzen
Hi all,

Just been playing with commands for the KX3 and found that when using the KX3
Utility on my MacBook Pro, that some commands don’t get a return.
For example: PO; always returns P despite that the power has been set at
10W.
There are others as well which do not return anything after issuing a command
to the KX3.

I am only just starting to look into the possibilities with Macros and I hope
to make a Macro which will do (roughly) the following:

1. CW mode
2. set Power 100mW
3. sent message 1
4. Pause 10 seconds
5. set Power 1W
6. sent message 2
7. Pause 10 seconds
8. set Power 5W
9. sent message 3
10. go back to 2 or exit

Not sure if “a Pause can be done”.

Newbie here and just starting, testing and reading up with the KX3 commands.

Cheers

[Elecraft] KX3 Rechargable Batteries

[Elecraft] KX3 CW Decode

2016-12-06 Thread Aaron K5ATG
I am in the process of learning CW and I am having a little bit of issue
with my KX3 on decoding CW. I am wanting it to be able to decode CW on TX
only so I can work on sending. By pressing the DATA button I selected TX
ONLY and I have the power setting at 0.0 watts into a dummy load. I am
using the plug in paddles for the KX3. However it will not decode anything.
I tuned to a strong signal and tried the different RX Thresholds and it
would not decode anything there either. I am not sure if I have it set up
right or I am missing a setting or something. Can anyone please help?

Thank you

[Elecraft] KX3 PTT Question

2016-12-26 Thread James Bennett
I have a minor issue with my KX3 that has me scratching my head. Because of
occasional background noise (XYL and two young boys) I seldom use VOX when on
those rare occasions I venture to the SSB part of the bands. I’m using an
inexpensive headset with a boom mic and there is no PTT switch on this unit.
With VOX turned off, I know I can push the XMIT button on the KX3 to put the
radio into transmit mode, and that works fine. But, I’d like to be able to lean
back in my desk chair and carry on a conversation w/o having to lean forward to
push that XMIT button every time I want to talk. I thought there was a way to
do this via a home brew PTT switch, connected across the tip and sleeve of the
ACC2 plug. In fact, I thought that at one time long ago I WAS able to do this.
But no longer.

So, I tried another way - I connected the Elecraft-supplied RCA-RCA cable to
the female RCA jack on the KX3-KXPA100 Adapter Cable and connected the shield
and center conductor. Doesn’t seem to put the rig into “full” transmit mode.
What happens is that the received signals on that frequency drop quite a bit in
amplitude, almost to inaudible, but the red TX light on the KX3 does not light
up.

I’m guessing that I’ve accidentally changed something in the config settings,
but I sure can’t determine what I did.

Any ideas here?

[Elecraft] KX3 power socket

2016-12-26 Thread Mark Hogan
I have SN 31, I recently finished our house and setup the shack. Radios
been boxed about a year since we moved. It was a desk rig at the last
house with a occasional trip to the back yard.
When I plug it in to 12v I get nothing. I unplugged and plugged it in
several times and got voltage to charge the batts. Looking in the hole it
appears the sockets got one leg loose on the board. Was that a issue or am
I one of the special kids? :)

[Elecraft] KX3 Switch Tones

2017-01-07 Thread Thorpe, Jeffrey
I've noticed that with switch tones set on (SW TONE) that the KX3 will transmit
the tone out the speaker port when in data mode. Shouldn't this be disabled in
data mode? It does it whether transmitting or receiving, and messes things up.

[Elecraft] KX3 Headphone Clicks

2013-12-29 Thread Jim Bennett
Hi All - just this past weekend completed building KX3 # 5539. Seems to work
fine except for one thing. When I've got headphones plugged in and running full
break-in I'm hearing a fairly strong clicking noise. I set the rig into
semi-QSK with a 1-second DLY and see that the click is happening when the radio
goes back into receive, NOT when I key it and send RF out into the ozone. Any
idea what's happening here? I've tried it with three different sets of 'phones:
A Sony MDR-V6, a Bose Triport, and an el-cheapo pair of 'round-the-ear phones
that I use with my iPhone at the gym. I hear the same click on all three. I
then unplugged the 'phones and listened to the built-in speaker with DLY at
zero. The clicks are there, too. Very annoying. Any hints??

Another correction. HLA 300 (and probably 150) have RF sensing PTT and
automatic band switching. They also have decent IMD is not driven to full
output power. HLA 300 is about 25-30 db IMD when driven to 150-200 watts
(5-7watt input) and cost under 500 USD. No antenna tuner though.

[Elecraft] KX3 "Full" SDR

2013-12-31 Thread Craig Schroeder
Happy New Year,

I want to move into the hobby aspects of SDR and have narrowed my list to the
KX3 with 100 watt Amp or a Flex 3000. I have been told that though the KX3
will connect to a PC it is not a "full" SDR radio (my understanding of "full"
is in regard to signal processing but there may be other factors implied that I
am not aware of being new to the SDR world).

If this perspective is on target, what are the important SDR limitations with
the KX3 that I should consider? If there are no important limitations, I do
like the form factor and knobs on the KX3 over the Flex software-only interface.

Thank you,

Craig Schroeder

[Elecraft] KX3 FW 1.84

2014-01-04 Thread Johnny Siu
Hello Wayne,

I am very pleased with the new FW for MW broadcast RX.  It now makes the KX3
really useful in receiving MW broadcast.  Previously, I felt the sensitivity of
KX3 below 1300KHz was worse than K3.

I like this improvement and thanks for the hard work.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Macros

2014-01-14 Thread Jim Bennett
Hi Emory -

Yep, I'd like a couple more programmable buttons, too. I also run a logging
program on my Mac - MacLoggerDX - and am going to ask the developer if he has
any way (or plans for) to send macros to the KX3, or K3. Since that program
uses my KX3-->computer port, I can't run it and the KX3 utility at the same
time. I suppose that running the KX3 utility would also be a way of having
additional macros, but I haven't read up on that because of my logging program
using the port.

On the KX3 and K3 sharing - it works real slick! My first suggestion is to
spend the $30-something dollars for that KE7X book on the KX3 - has some great
info in it, including several diagrams in the back on EXACTLY how to have the
KX3 share "stuff" with the K3. In my situation, I have the RF output from each
radio going into a Daiwa two position coax switch. The output port of that
switch goes to my KPA500 amp, and the RF output of the KPA500 goes to the
KAT500 auto tuner. The tuner is connected to three different antennas: an 88
foot long doublet for 40-6 meters, an 80 meter Inverted L, and a 160 meter
Inverted L. Of course, I have the requisite 15-pin connectors running between
the K3, KPA500, and KAT500. I've got on order from Elecraft the special RCA
adapter cable that will run from the KX3 ACC2 jack to the back of the KAT500.
This is needed if you plan on having the K3 powered off when you run the KX3.
Otherwise, as I found out, the powered off K3 pulls the PTT down on the KPA500
and ugly stuff happens. Anyway, Fred's book shows and explains how it works,
and it DOES work! I can run my KX3 barefoot if I want, or I can run it through
the KPA500 and get 190 watts output with 12 out of the KX3. If I want to run
PSK31 at 25 watts out, I can dial the KX3 back to 2 watts and the KPA500 gives
me 25. That's the lowest it goes. Dropping the KX3 power below 1.8 watts causes
the KPA500 to drop back to zero out. But that's fine with me.

Hope that helps!

[Elecraft] KX3 audio quirk

I am using the KX3 with the KXPA100 with the built in tuner. Earlier today
when I turned on the Notch filter to kill a heterodyne, it was successful but

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 comparison

2014-01-18 Thread Jim Lowman
I'm sure that a lot of us would like to see the results of that
comparison, George.

What we do know is that the Argonaut VI has a higher current demand on
receive, and is missing some bands.
The Argonaut should have a very good receiver, like the Eagle, and
excellent break-in CW; a Ten-Tec legend.
But an actual A/B comparison would be useful. The human ear can't
detect everything that laboratory instruments can.

After much wringing of the hands over the missing bands, I realized that
I have an Argonaut VI+ so to speak.

All I have to do is turn my Eagle down to 5w. :-)

[Elecraft] KX3 Power Socket

2014-02-17 Thread Dominic Baines
The power lead/barrel connector on the second #2334 KX3 is starting to
intermittently drop out. Most notable if you remove the internal
batteries and try and operate from a supply only. It seems it is the
socket itself that is duff. Yes using the Elecraft power leads not
something homebrewed.

I am thinking it might be worth removing the socket, fitting a couple of
power poles on a pig tail, and a grommet where the original socket was.

Anyone else done anything similar?

A second wash with iso propyl alcohol and the KX3 I thought wind blown
sand had killed (#1082) seems fine now... there was a lot of dirt/dust
that had not previously been removed.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 ordered!

2014-02-27 Thread Rick Tavan N6XI
Congratulations, Sean. Welcome to a great hobby. Consider the CW Operators
Club "CW Academy," http://www.cwops.org/cwacademy.html as a path to Morse
Code proficiency. There is a backlog for online classes, so you may have to
wait a bit. During that time, learn to use your KX3 on SSB and how to tune
in CW signals. There are also some stand-alone learning programs that can
get you started before you get into a CWA class. See
http://www.cwops.org/resources.html . CW isn't just the best mode for QRP
operation with a KX3, it's also the best mode, period! Hope to hear you on
the air soon.

[Elecraft] KX3 feature request

2014-03-03 Thread GDR
It sure would be nice to activate the ANT button so that it would toggle
between two different antennas "settings", 1 or 2, when the ATU is installed. I
have an OCF dipole and a vertical for HF. Each time I switch between the two I
have to retune the ATU. I would much prefer to tap/hold the ANT button to go
from one to the other. I know the KPA100 with ATU will do this but I want the
KX3 to do it barefoot. Seems like it would be doable through software
programming.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 KXPA100

2014-03-04 Thread Cady, Fred
Hi,
There is a power calibration that you can do. This is from the KX3 firmware
notes for KX3 firmware 1.76. Maybe you can try that.

MCU 1.76 / DSP 1.27, 11-20-2013

* MENU:PA MODE NOW HAS POWER-OUT CAL (P out CAL) SETTING: This enables 75-W
power calibration in TUNE mode. When PWR is adjusted, and "P out CAL" mode is
in effect, setting power to 75 watts shows "CAL 75W" on VFO B.

* KXPA100 DRIVE POWER CAL DATA UTILIZED: If the KXPA100's per-band 75-W drive
power has been saved at the factory, the KX3 will use it. If not, the KX3's
own per-band amplifier drive data is used (if available). This data is created
by setting PA MODE to Pout CAL (see above), then doing a TUNE on each band at
75 W.

Hi All,

I have had my KX3 for some time, just completed a kit KXPA100 with Tuner.

Testing all works well, ATU tunes very well. Audio reports on TX good.

My issue is with the Power out LED's and the Utility program monitoring the
power. I do not have an accurate Power Meter Output appears as indicated not to
exceed 70W

The LEDs follow the Utility program (makes sense) Can an adjustments be made?
I am off to EA8 land on Monday. and would like to run 100w and not 12w

First check the supply voltage to the amp -- if you're not giving it at least
13,8V you may find it winds back the max output power.

Thanks for the quick response
Much appreciated.
The PA CAL has made things a whole lot better across the bands.

Just worked W1AW/P0 on 10m running 25w to a Buddipole

Who needs QRO just use the right band and propagation ;)

2014-03-05 Thread G7KXZ
I think I may have found the problem, although not tested

My dummy load has gone open circuit ( at QRP Power it matches 1:1 anything over
10w and it goes to 6:1 !!
Its now in the bin.

The losses are obviously reflected

I will post again when tested with a 'functional' dummy load

[Elecraft] KX3 through TSA

2014-03-11 Thread eric norris

I have flown with a QRP radio exactly once in the past ten years.  I was pulled
out of line after x-ray, and sent to an area some distance from the x-ray
machine.  There I stood until a guy came over and donned nitrile gloves, and
using a pair of tongs, swabbed my radio, cables, atu, paddles, etc, then stuck
the large swab into a machine.  I started to speak to him, but another TSA
official told me to remain quiet.  The rest of the passengers filed by, looking
at me like I was Mohammed Atta.  I was not asked a single question.

The non-swabbing guard then motioned me back over, apparently unaware I was, in
fact, fluent in English.  He then pointed to the line, indicating I could go.
I was a bit surprised, because everyone knows at FT-817 can blow up at any
time.
73,

Eric

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Manuals

Also this:

A smaller condensed manual, easy to pack and take.

I have and could recommend both. They serve different purposes

[Elecraft] KX3 firmware issue

2014-03-16 Thread Dick Hanson
Howdy.

After successfully upgrading my firmware on two previous occasions,
yesterday's efforts left me with a dead radio.

To make matters somewhat worse, I'd since changed computers so the backup
file was gone.

The upgrade would have been to 1.87 had it completed successfully.

I replaced the serial cable; didn't help.

Changed to a different computer; that also did not help.

All of my computers are running Win 7 OS.

The utility window message is 'reload mcu'; did that a half dozen times or
so.

Help of any sort would be sincerely appreciated.

Please reply off list and I'll post any successful ideas.

[Elecraft] KX3 / NaP3 Question

2014-03-20 Thread Jim Bennett
I'm running NAp3 v2.2.4.2 on Windows 8.1, connected to the RX I/Q port on my
KX3 at one end and to the Line In jack on an iMac on the other end. As some
other folks have seen, there is an initial issue with "images" or "duplicated"
signals when NaP3 starts up. Ken (W0CZ) tipped me to a way to get rid of the
image issue by opening the NaP3 Config panel, going to the DSP tab, and then
doing a "Calibrate". This works quite well and just about completely eliminates
those images. However

When I key the KX3, I see my own signal (quite strong) on the NaP3 display and
this completely throws out the calibration, bringing back the images, big time.
I have tried several things to eliminate this: First, I tried using a PTT
switch with the KX3 instead of QSK - I still see my signal on the pan display.
Then, I pressed XMIT on the KX3 prior to keying it - no change, still see my
signal. Next, I built an audio isolator to put in the line between the KX3 and
the Line In jack on the iMac. No change. Finally, I wound the cable through a
2.4" mix 31 ferrite core nine times, thinking that maybe RF was somehow getting
things hosed. That didn't help.

So, my questions are: why am I seeing my signal from the KX3 RX I/Q when I
transmit? Shouldn't that line be cut off completely when the KX3 goes into
transmit? If not, can this be changed so it does? :-)

[Elecraft] KX3 Audio Power

2014-03-27 Thread Doug Person
Now that the KX3 can function as a full QRO transceiver with the new
amplifier, I find myself a bit disappointed with audio output power.
Even with the most efficient speaker I can find, I can't really get a
comfortable audio level. So, I'm kind of stuck with headphones to
really hear well. Wondering if anyone has tried building a simple audio
amp that will power a decent desk speaker. I was wondering if these
class "D" modules are worth investigating. Anyone have any ideas?

[Elecraft] KX3 Batt Err

2014-04-02 Thread gt-i

I get an "bat Err" message if I want to charge my battery pack on the KX3.
The battery (NiMh) seems to be very low, as the KX3 doesn't start with
them. The LEDs light up shortly then nothing.

But if powered externally, I'd expect I get my battery recharged.

What can I do?
Tnx,

[Elecraft] KX3 - CW weighting

2014-04-03 Thread pa3deb
Hi,

I'm experiencing a difference in handling the cw-weighting by my KX3 (serial
4766, MCU 01.87, DSP 01.28)
I don't have a scope, but my hearing is ok ;-)
I adjusted the menu setting for cw weight to 1.15, because I like a little
bit more "rounded" tone.
I can only hear that back, when I use the XMIT-button to place the rig in
TX-mode. When I'm using the VOX the keying seems unaffected by the
weight-setting.
Please tell me if this is reproducable and if so, can it be changed?

Thanks for any input.
Kees, PA3DEB

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Heatsinks

2014-04-04 Thread Howard Hoyt
There has been a lot of talk recently regarding the KX3, thermal limits
and heatsinks.

Some of you may remember the heatsink design and pictures I originally
posted six months ago. I think I was one of the first to execute a
heatsink design for the KX3, but soon afterward my company machine shop
closed. In the intervening months I have done a lot of testing and
modeling to the KX3 thermal situation, and I'm now making them at a new
machine shop. Interestingly enough, concurrent with the release of a
couple of other heatsink designs recently, I have begun receiving quite
a few requests to make my heatsink design available for purchase. This
says to me there is a market for a heatsink not satisfied by the others,
so I'm within two weeks away from the first production run returning
from anodizing. This list isn't the place to post an advertisement, so
if you are interested in the PAE-Kx31 heatsink, please check it out at:

http://www.proaudioeng.com/?page_id=40

Considering all of the optional accessories coming out for the KX3, I
would say the experimenter spirit hasn't gone out of ham radio yet!

Cheers & 73,

it still planned for high enough stability for JT65B mode and a maximum power of 10w?

[Elecraft] KX3 Temp compensation

2014-04-14 Thread P.J.Hicks

Shortly after I got my KX3, #1716 I think, I noticed some moderate drift while
doing PSK31. I bought, built and ran the Extende d VFO C ompensation procedure
and things improved. Now, about a year or 18 months later I am told I have
drift showing up on my signal. I re-ran the procedure and all appears to bbe
good. My question regards the last statement on pg 5 of the procedure yhat says
" Be sure to perform the RECAL calibration at room temperature, as described in
your KX3 manual.". Is this statement in referance to the 'Initial  Reference
Calibration' done at the start of the procedure or to the procedure in the
manual which I have already done? Must it be done again after the VFO
procedure?

I guess it wouldn't hurt to do it again but is it necessary?

[Elecraft] KX3 broadcast interference

2014-04-14 Thread Thaire Bryant
Yesterday afternoon I noticed an odd issue with my KX3. I've had it almost two
years and have never seen this before. 17 meters had broadcast interference
from one end to the other on USB and CW (same station). I could hear nothing
on AM. I checked the K3 and K2 on the same antenna and had no interference.
On the KX3 it was only on 17M but on any antenna. Any ideas?
