[Elecraft] Remote Connect using Elecraft Remote Program

2022-06-13 Thread Domenick Fusca
I am a bit confused on what I need to configure to set up a remote
connection to my KPA1500 amp. My primary confusion is what should be
the IP addresses to enter?

There are 3 connect options made available through the Remote program.
(1) Local Connect - I am successfully using this at home where my amp
and radio are located.
(2) Host remote - by the name this sounds to me this expects a host or
PC that is located in the shack and I am connecting to that host.
(3) Connect remote - this sounds like the one for me to remotely
connect directly to the amp. I'm not sure what I enter here for IP
address. My thought is to enter my WAN ip address and for port I have
a port defined with port forwarding also defined. It also asks for
username and password, now this really throws me off. Does the amp
have a username and password that maybe I need to define?

Maybe my confusion is the result of thinking I can remote connect to
the amp without a host (PC) in the shack.. How can I use the Remote
program to connect to the amp without a pc in the shack?

Thank You,

Re: [Elecraft] Remote Elecraft tranceivers

2022-05-02 Thread David Gilbert

Elecraft has said that the K4 is supposed to eventually have full remote
capability from a PC or even notebook computer, which from my point of
view would be one of the strong selling points of the rig. However, the
last information I saw on it (I think somebody posted a reply from
Elecraft here on the reflector) indicated that Elecraft had no timetable
for writing the software to do so.  Maybe Wayne would have some sort of
update on that.

[Elecraft] Remote Operation with K4

2021-08-04 Thread David Gilbert

Has anyone with a new K4 had the opportunity to do any serious CW long
distance remote operating with it, and if so, how effective was it?  By
serious, I mean in a contest or in a DX pileup where reaction time is
important.  And by long distance, I mean over the internet, not just via
your own LAN.

Re: [Elecraft] REMOTE OPERATION

2021-01-23 Thread K5WA
Paul,

I attended the "Demo" meeting last night and was told that Elecraft will
release remoting software so you don't have to have a K4/0, HOWEVER, the
further nuance to your question is probably "Can I use a paddle to send CW?"
That was not directly discussed but I'll bet the answer is no. I'm sure you
could use a keyboard to send CW but I'm not sure that capability will be
built into Elecraft's remoting software. For my own interim remote setup
(I'm waiting on the K4/0), I found a client server application (df3cb.com)
that uses a WinKeyer to give you paddle CW. It requires a WinKeyer on BOTH
ends of your remote. The idea is that you are paddling your local WinKeyer
and it is talking to the remote WinKeyer which is connected to your remote
rig. That same remote capability is built into a WinKeyer
(https://www.hamcrafters2.com/files/WKremote.pdf) and called WKremote by
K1EL. I didn't use that because I have a YCCC SO2R Box (which emulates a
WinKeyer V1, I think) at my station so since I didn't have two WinKeyers, I
tried the DF3CB idea and it worked! You need to turn off the sidetone
monitor on your rig and use the sidetone of your local WinKeyer but it works
fine when you want to use a paddle for remote CW.

Bob K5WA

[Elecraft] Remote software

2020-09-28 Thread K5WA
Now I’m really confused…again. 😉

I just watched Eric’s presentation to Waters & Stanton on Oct 3, 2019
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-PHL68WIdg). He clearly states that Elecraft
produced remoting software applications for Windows 10 (10:10 - 10:20 into the
video), iOS and Android were being planned at that time however I have recently
understood that remoting software from Elecraft was NOT being contemplated. My
ultimate remote solution will be a K4/0 type device (or whatever new part
number it will be, K4R?) but, in the meantime, having an Elecraft
produced/blessed/influenced/published remoting software application would be a
good interim.

Anybody know for sure whether it is or isn’t being planned? Maybe it was
decided to drop software and focus on hardware since last year due to COVID and
fires?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] Remote station ops

2020-07-13 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I

Not to allow thread hijacking (now renamed at least);

One of my goals is to allow each component of the station to be
manageable by a computer, in part for the purposes of operation when I
travel.  Once that goal has been met (99% successful, a couple things
are 'better' with eyes on), using TeamViewer (and Skype for phone modes)
is simple.

I've done this for years, successfully but it requires solid 3G or
better at the remote end, which is often a far greater challenge.

Please- *nobody* is asking JT to save CW by giving us an extra 6-8 dB
SNR. I hope that is not the next Goldilocks mode in the pipeline. I
assume proponents of such a cobbled up "user interface" would feel
perfectly justified in "sharing" even more CW frequency space? No thanks.

Not quite. I'm aware of JS8 and tried it more than a year ago, but it

Think of it this way ... CW works fine as both a contest mode, DXing
mode, and conversational mode. Underlaying CW with a well configured
digital signal processing scheme like that which is under FT8, except
with a different user interface than either WSJT-X or JS8, could be
equally versatile but with maybe 6-8 db better S/N ... possibly by an
even greater margin if the decoding allowed errors instead of being all
or nothing.

I'm not saying text-to-CW is the only way to reap the benefit of modern
digital signal processing ... only using it as an example.

People only interested in a contact will probably always prefer
WSJT-X/FT8 because it does that very well, but both contesting and rag
chewing could really use a different (simpler) structure while still
utilizing the superior weak signal peformance of modern digital signal
processing. I guarantee that it is possible to do so.

Well, the fact is that the coding and processing behind modes like FT8
doesn't have to be as rigid as is implemented in WSJT-X. It only
requires that information be sent and received in time frames, and

those

time frames are simply a function of three variables ... bandwidth,
rate, and number of characters in the message frame. It would be
possible to change any of those, such as widening the bandwidth to
increase the number of characters for the same time frame.

It would also be possible to send text but have it converted to CW on
the other end. Or even to key CW that gets converted to text before
transmission ... i.e., CW to CW except with significantly better S/N
performance. If the user was willing to live with a narrow bandwidth
single conversation format, clock synchronization isn't even really
needed. And if we were willing to live with a single conversation
format, there would be no point in cramming everyone into 2.4 KHz and

we

could spread out like we do for every other mode.

I'm no expert, but I think that the coding could have enough error
checking to allow busted message frames to be printed (or converted to
CW) ... although of course with errors. The extra error processing
would reduce the character count, though, all other things being

equal.

The point is that the digital signal processing behind FT8 is

extremely

powerful and could be adapted to other user formats with a lot more
flexibility than we have with FT8. The hams who just dismiss FT8 out

of

hand really don't understand the broader weak signal applicability of

it.

[Elecraft] Remote Operation of K4

2020-01-20 Thread Terry Brown
I have watched many of Eric’s videos on YouTube about the K4 and how easy it
will be to operate remotely through its Ethernet port.

I have a rather naive question, because I’ve not seen much written about this
with other rigs.

How would you power up and power down the K4 remotely? I can’t imagine leaving
the rig powered for days on end waiting for remote operation.

Thanks!

[Elecraft] WBN: Restartable Server Operation for Elecraft Remote Apps

2019-12-16 Thread Rick Tavan
It would be nice if KPA500 Remote, KAT500 Remote, and KPA1500 Remote could
be set up to operate as *automatically restartable servers*. I don't think
they can do this today, but if I'm wrong, someone please enlighten me!

Here's the scenario: These apps all have Host Remote capability. When
enabled, they listen for connection from a client-side instance of the same
app. But it takes two or three mouse clicks to set this up AFTER launching
the server-side programs. If the server computer on which they run suffers
a power failure, it can reboot automatically when power is restored (not
all computers will do this, but many can). However, it's necessary to
restart the app manually, tell it to start hosting, and, at least for
KPA1500, turn the amp back off since the app turns it on during its
initialization process. It would be nice if they had a setting that means
"Automatically go into remote hosting mode and turn OFF the device (or
don't turn it on) upon startup." Then, unattended power failures would be
largely transparent to the control-side user.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Remote Tuner?

2019-03-31 Thread Richard Thorne

How about a remote tuner option?

Maybe the KAT-500 repackaged so the tuner can be installed at the feed
point.  Have voltage and control signals sent down the coax vs a
separate control line?

As a 2nd option a beefed up remote tuner to handle the KPA-1500?

I know there's been talk of a K4 or KX4 which would be nice, but a
remote tuner would probably fit a lot of need.  If I have an antenna
with a an swr higher than 3:1, and a tuner is required, it's better off
at the antenna than in the shack.

[Elecraft] Remote Operating-OT

2019-03-24 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
This topic has already been closed, but let me make a suggestion.

If you have strong feelings about remote operation and you are an ARRL
member, contact your ARRL Director, as they set policy for the ARRL.

Their phone numbers and e-mail addresses are on page 15 of this month's QST.
Find your Division, and contact your Elected Director. They need their
member's viewpoints in order to properly represent their Division.

Yes. There are at least three methods to power the KPA1500 ON/OF
independently without using the REM jack on the back of KPA1500, assuming
you leave the rocker switch on the back of the separate KPA1500 power
supply in the ON position:

   1. Connect the KPA1500 to a PC via USB cable. Use the KPA1500 Utility
(running on a local PC) to power the amp. on and off. The KPA1500
   Remote Software
    also
   has this capability.
   -or-
   2. Momentarily ground Pin 8 of the KPA1500 AUX connector. This is
easily accomplished using an S-BOX or S-BOX-USB
and a simple program to pulse the DTR or RTS pin of a real or virtual
serial port, or you can build an equivalent circuit using a resistor and
NPN transistor (same technique that is used by RemoteHams software to power
up a K3 remotely with no RemoteRig box required). A KPAK3AUX cable cannot
be used (no connection on Pin 8).
   3. Use a Y-BOX v2.1 which can connect DIGOUT 1
(Pin 11) to the amplifier PIn 8, and a K3 Macro, as described in detail
   here .

For example i want to turn on K3, but want to have KPA1500 off, is there

Re: [Elecraft] Remote On/Off KPA-1500

2019-03-18 Thread Dick Dievendorff
1) send a serial command ^on1 via the USB port. This is what the KPA1500
Utility does. The amp can process a few commands like this when “off”. The
KPA1500 Remote program can also do this, via the USB connector. ^on0 turns the
amp off.

2) supply 12v DC to a rear panel RCA connector. This can be used with a K3 to
power the amp on with the K3, but any source of 12v will do.

3) pull down (ground) pin 8 on the ACC connector. Pull it down briefly.

4) send a Wake on LAN “magic packet” via the Ethernet connector. WoL must be
enabled with a menu option. The KPA1500 Remote program does this when
connected to the amp via Ethernet.

Also, is there an easy way to also toggle the amp between operate and standby?
Would be nice to write an app for a Smartphone, either Apple or Android (I
carry both).

2019-03-18 Thread Jorge Diez - CX6VM
hello

what are the diferent ways to turn KPA1500´s on/off remotely?

Is there any way to turn it on/off alone, with no need to turn on/off the
K3?

For example i want to turn on K3, but want to have KPA1500 off, is there
any way to do that?

2019-03-15 Thread Rich Yost via Elecraft
I use a 12v power cube plugged into a Network Power Switch. This is how I turn
my 6500 on remotely also.
Its a 4 outlet internet switch, so I use it turn apply 12v to the REMOTE jack
and turn on the KPA-1500.

Some do this with an RCA cable from the K3 rear panel 12v line to the amp REM
connector. The amp turns on and off with the rig. Current draw is minimal; you
can also use the same K3 12v to power your P3.

Gerry,

Was your K3 purchased before about 9/1/2009?
If so, it may not have the IF buffer mod installed which increases the
gain at the IF output by about 10dB.

See IF Output Buffer Gain Modification in the listing of K3 mods.

That sure beats the original geosynchronous latency of over 2 seconds,
really testing the mettle of AT&T's echo suppressors.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote with Satellite

2018-07-07 Thread Fred Jensen

There are basically 3 components to the latency ...

The RT light-time [approx 24,000 miles] is about 250 ms and is
constant.  There is a latency within the transponder, which used to run
around 200 ms, I don't know what the newer ones might be, if there are
any.  That too is probably fairly constant.  There is also some latency
in the ground terminal equipment, plus the normal latency between it,
you, and the remote.  That varies over time.  All told, I wouldn't be
surprised to see RT latency in the 700 -800 ms range.

With RT ping times in the 35-55 ms range plus whatever delays are
introduced by two RemoteRig RRC's, I don't notice it.  99% of the time,
the I'net connection is solid.  Very occasionally, dropouts will
essentially make the remote unusable.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote with Satellite

2018-07-07 Thread Fred Jensen
I'm not "anyone who has tried remote with a satellite internet
connection" but I do operate a remote station. Normally, my RT ping
times to the station run around 30-50 ms and the latency is just barely
apparent if I spin the Big Knob really fast.  It's really apparent if I
listen off the air on a separate rig of course but I only do that if
testing.  RT light time for geosynchronous satellites is in the 250 ms
range to which you'd need to add any other I'net and terminal latency.

I'd guess that some kinds of remote ops would work OK on some modes
[CW/SSB ragchew maybe], but RTTY and digital modes and contest operation
might be a real problem.  The most noticeable for an operator might be
the display delay when tuning.  At any rate, I think it would be fairly
non-optimal.

John,

The latency is too high, around three quarters of a second, of which
most (around 530 ms) is caused by the trip up and down to the satellite
and back. The rest is internet latency of a couple of hundred ms.

[Elecraft] Remote antenna tuning

2018-05-13 Thread Gary Baker
If you are looking for a high efficiency antenna system, low swr on long
runs of coaxial cable is critical. The only way to accomplish this on a
wide band basis is to provide a 50 ohm non-reactive load for your 50 ohm
coaxial cable.

Some sort of tuning is needed at the antenna end of the coax. I developed
"StepperTune" to control an ATU remotely. Tuning a loop is also applicable
with StepperTune. For more info, go to www.steppertune.com

Re: [Elecraft] Remote Tuning for Loop?

2018-05-12 Thread Dave Cole (NK7Z)

Hi Phil,
I use a cordless phone, or a cell phone, contact the second phone, and
tune my loop from about 100 feet for most noise. Once you get the hang
of it, you can hit a 1:1 almost every time...

I have a homebrew Alex Loop running now, outside, and doing WSPR. Go to
WSPR net, and select NK7Z, then look at the last few hours... I got all
sorts of DX yesterday, which you can see by looking at the last 12 hours...

If all of that fails, I will be constructing a 12 foot loop for 40, and
building a remote tuning device out of a servo and an airplane
controller. I can share with you what I end yup with if you want.

Look at the W4OP loop. The W4OP offers manual and remote tuning options. I
have the W4OP (with manual and remote tuning units) and the AlexLoop The W4OP
is the one that gets used the most, although it’s a bit heavier when packed and
can’t really be hand held. Both are nice products.

[Elecraft] Remote operation

2018-01-04 Thread Gordon LaPoint

Tim,

One of the all software ways to remote operate is:
http://www.remotehams.com/

You set up the server software on a computer attached to the radio.
You can limit access to just who you want to operate your radio, or open
it up to pre-approved hams.

You install client software on the computer you want to operate
from, its not all inclusive, but does work pretty good.

[Elecraft] Remote ATU with KPA500/KAT500?

2017-08-25 Thread MaverickNH
I have a used KPA500/KAT500 set arriving next week and plan to integrate into
my shack which has a K3S/100 with Internal Tuner, and three antennas on 2
coax feed lines:
1. RG213 coax 1 runs to a 43ft Vertical with a D.C.-over-coax powered SG-235
remote ATU. I'm putting a MFJ-2910 80/160 Matching Coil on that soon.
2. RG213 coax 2 runs to a remote switch selecting a Par OA-50 6m horizontal
loop 50ft up on a mast or a G5RV 102ft 40ft up with a LDG RT-600 remote ATU
at base powered D.C.-over-coax.

Both rATUs specify 100W max for tuning and to tune bypassing any amplifier.
At present, I change bands and bypass the K3S internal ATU, transmit default
10W to activate the rATUs, then enable the internal K3S ATU and hit the ATU
button to tune if the rATUs were much above 1:1.

A lot on the integrated K3S/KPA500/KAT500 system seems defaulted to
safeguards that prevent mistakes, which is great. How should I be thinking
about using my rATUs with the addition of the KPA500/KAT500? I know I'll be
bypassing the K3S internal ATU forever more. Is there a way to always bypass
the KPA500 on band switch so as to not tune up with it enabled (assuming I
should do so)?

Re: [Elecraft] Remote computer won't communicate with K3 after re-installing Windows 10

2017-08-15 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Problem solved!

Apparently, the default FTDI driver that Windows 10 installs is from
2013 and just isn't good enough for this application.
I installed the latest FTDI driver that the K3 web site pointed to and
all is well now.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote computer won't communicate with K3 after re-installing Windows 10

Why doesn't he use the MicroHam device with the Elecraft transceiver? It
works well for me.

Jim Reisert AD1C wrote:

I need some help from the reflector. First of all, I am NOT a K3
owner. I am helping a friend remotely who is 2000 miles away.

His computer was running Windows 10 and was previously working with
the K3, both with the K3 Utility as well as DX4WIN. I had to rebuild
the computer from scratch after a number of software problems
developed. His microHAM device with several virtual COM ports is
working fine (it's interfaced to a Ten-Tec Orion). It's only the K3
that we're having problems with.

I have been referring to this page:

http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

First of all, regarding this statement, "Elecraft offers the KUSB
serial-to-USB cable for USB only computers etc. Our cable was
originally provided using a Prolific chip set but since approximately
July of 2010 we have been shipping KUSB cables which use the FTDI chip
set."

How do I determine which chipset he has? Other than the virtual COM
ports for the microHAM device, I see two other ports:

One that says simply, "USB Com Port 3"

Another port mentions a Silicon Labs driver, and it shows up on COM10.

There is no overlap of any COM port numbers.

I have tried both DX4WIN and the K3 utility with both COM ports (3 and
10). While there are no "unknown port" errors, neither program can
communicate with the K3 on either port. So something is missing and I
do not know what that is.

Again, I am trying to do this remotely, so it's hard for me to pull
cables, etc. to try to figure out what's going on.

Can someone please suggest a course of action for me to try to debug
this problem? Mainly, I don't know which of the two COM devices above
*may* be for the K3, and whether the correct driver is installed.

Thanks & 73 - Jim AD1C

[Elecraft] Remote Rig and P3?

Assuming I figure out how to transport the video (vga capture, webcam, etc)
how does one connect a RemoteRig to a K3 via the serial port and still have
a K3/P3 functioning connection?

Has anyone done this?

Re: [Elecraft] Remote computer won't communicate with K3 after re-installing Windows 10

2017-08-14 Thread Fred Jensen
Jim, just disconnect and reconnect each USB cable while watching the COM
ports in Device Mangler. You'll see the port disappear and then reappear.

FWIW: I never had any problems with Prolific USB-Serial chipsets until
Win10 graciously installed itself in the middle of the night without
asking. Turns out, there are several generations of Prolific chipsets,
and there are no Win10 drivers for a couple of the oldest ones. I found
an adapter with one of the more recent chipsets and it works fine.

Thanks, Bill, but I don't know which interface cable he has - it could
be Prolific or FTDI, depending on how old it is. Because there are

assume that the generic USB COM port is the one that the K3 needs.

This vendor, a ham in San Jose, sells a wide range of genuine FTDI USB
adapter cables, including this one that's USB to DB9.

I bought a couple of cables from him and was pleased with what I got.

2017-08-14 Thread Clay Autery
There's your issue Either he has a counterfeit FTDI chip/unit, OR
simply haven't gotten the FTDI drivers all updated.

I JUST used an older Elecraft supplied FTDI cable the other day to
update an Elmer's KPA500 or KAT500, I forget which and it took some
doing to finally get the latest FTDI drivers on ALL the ports used for
K3s, XG3, KAT500, KPA500, P3, etc...

Latest driver is dated: 09/28/2016 v.2.12.24.0 according to my
machine... Maybe an even newer one for Win10.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote Power On/Off

2017-07-09 Thread Jim Rhodes
Partly correct. Pressing the power button to turn off initiates a shutdown
procedure. Pin 8 is only grounded momentarily when you power on and does
not stay grounded while powered up. Powering down by simply removing power
is not recommended.

[Elecraft] Remote Power On/Off

2017-07-09 Thread Carl Ferguson
I frequently operate remote. I am new to the K3.

I interpret the manual to say to

To turn the radio back on after my control program sends a PS0; command to
power off

   - turn on the DC power supply (this DC supply operates equipment in
addition to the K3 and must be turned off when the station is shutdown)
   - ground ACC Pin 8

To turn the radio off

   - send the PS0; command
   - open ACC Pin 8
   - turn off the DC power supply

I infer from this sequence that pressing the Power button to turn on the K3
effectively grounds ACC pin 8.

Conversely, pressing the Power button to turn off the K3, opens ACC Pin 8.

Is this correct?

Thank you.

Really?

Remote operating (as in remote from civilization) is a common usage for
a lot of Elecrafters, so it's highly relevant.

There are subjects way more off topic that run on this list, often for
days/weeks. You don't moderate them it seems.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote Operating Time Sync

2017-06-18 Thread Dave B via Elecraft
Because some modes start a transmission on a UTC minute boundary, +- a
second(ish)

The RX software records for a fixed length of time, then examines the
recording to extract the data.

If a transmission starts late or early by too much, the data wont be
decoded.

Why is accurate time important with these modes?

I know Eric moderated this topic so I will be brief, but all comments
so far danced around the reason you need accurate time for WSJT modes.
These are synchronous digital modes to both stations computers need
to know when the start of the message begins.

I use a simple cheap GPS with USB dongle plugged directly into my
computer and run BktTimeSync by IZ2BKT. You can choose either NTP
time servers or take the time from the GPS without needing internet connection.

Write me off list for details.

Let's wind this down now and end the thread.

Lots of good info, but its way exceeding the OT posting limit of 5-10. PLEASE
self-moderate on threads as they get longer and take extended discussions
off-list to direct email after 5-10 posts to relieve email overload for others.
